INTRODUCTION

Background of the office

The office that I worked at is ZLG Design. The design firm based in kuala lumpur Malaysia. Susanne Zeidler and Huat Lim both trained at the Bartlett and the Architectural Association in London respectively. They worked with Zaha Hadid, Lord Norman Foster and studied under Sir Peter Cook and late Ron Herron and the late Professor Dr. Gordon Pask of cybernetics fame. Huat is an AA graduate with honours degree and has been a registered architect with the RIBA and ARCUK since 1987.

There are few famous architectures that designed by ZLG Design that are well known by Malaysian:

Working in the office

The office is separated into 3 parts: director’s room, meeting space and employee space. My colleagues and I are working together at the employee space. The layout of the office gave the space for employees to bond with each other.

Unfortunately I did not get to work in the office for the first month due to the Movement Control Order as the high number of covid-19 cases in Malaysia. I was asked to work from home. The same goes to my colleagues. We worked remotely by using communication software such as Microsoft Team, Zoom and Telegram. Although we encounter miscommunication sometimes, overall it is great. There’s an office meeting every Monday to report about project progress and assign tasks to everyone. Normally the meeting will last around 1 hour.

The government decided to relax the Movement Control Order as the daily Covid-19 cases are reducing, and the office decided to start to work in the office. According to the SOP, employees were asked to work in the office 3 days per week to reduce the amount of people working in the same space. I choose to work from Wednesday to Friday. We wore face masks and kept social distance in the office according to the SOP by government.

The office provides a limited computer only enough for full timers to use it. Therefore for interns like me, we have to bring our own laptop to the office. The architectural software used in the office are: - AutoCAD - Revit - Sketchup - Lumion - Photoshop - InDesign ZLG OFFICE

Working as an intern in the office

The job application of mine is an intern position. Usually I work in a team with my colleagues on projects. The job scope I did in projects are architectural drawing, building 3D models and 3D model rendering. Other than that, I will be doing presentation slides, setting up meetings with clients or consultants, dropping down meeting minutes and also presenting design options to the managing director (Huat Lim).

Although I am an intern in the office, I was given a lot of opportunities to learn about things that I could learn from school. Much appreciation to the office managing director (Huat Lim) for all the opportunities.

Office Activities

Aged Care Introduction

Aged Care is the first project that I involved in when I join the office. This project is at the design phase when I join and moving forward to D.O stage by the time I leave. The project is a 4 floors architecture where lower floors for clinical purpose and upper floors are for aged care. The clients are professional doctors who cater for an architecture which doesnt looks like a hospital on the facade but function like it.

The office introduce clinical care together with aged care and also the both facilities can share a courtyard concept which not only enhances the internal environment and well being of residents but also reduces the effective energy use by at least 15 %. daylight as we know also helps healing as discovered by professor roger ulrich.

Job Scope

The project had a deisgn proposal before I join the office. The basic architectural drawing and 3D model has been done. However there are a lot of changes according to fire requirement and design changes. Me and my 3 colleagues were ask to work together to produce:

- Fire Plans and calculation

- New 3D model in Revit

- New option for facade design

- D.O submission drawing

- 3D rendering

- Presentation slide

All of us are assigned to the job scope above. I am in charge of the 3D model and rendering. Not only that I am also involved in other task occasionally.

Astro Introduction

Astro is a project at the stage of renovation and fire engineering. The office isproviding options for awani renovations, providing an exit route for theatrette. In this case, a lot of fire compliance drawing and detailed drawing need to be prepared.

Job Scope

The part that I’m in charge of in this project is to produce the detailed drawing of railing, fire door and fire escape indicator.

Jelutong Introduction

Jelutong is a residential project which is in the design phase. It is a readybuilt bangalow. The client asked for options for renovation design of the building. The office came out with an design option: “We will dramatize the sense of daylight and celebrate the presence of nature and engage elements of the outside. With the kendrick this means better gym facilities, more outdoor activities and also sensibly allows for natural ventilation to all of the rooks including bathrooms and stores and also kitchen. The demolition strategy is crucial in deciding what is the best fit to renovate and enhance the real estate. In this sense also we need to minimize level changes and elaborate mechanical and electrical changes to the existing. The relocation of the main iringan stairs is critical and also the realignment to all wet areas which simply means opening the through views across the first level and the ground. It is most important to give a thorough view to the back garden upon arrival to the house. the external facades and features of the existing house a second phase and somewhat less important change. However, it is highly recommended to simplify and improve the ledges and terracing at the back of the house and to invest in an entrance canopy and make a design statement for the car porch and also the landscape concept. On the whole we would not recommend increasing the number of rooms and general footprint of the house other than to add a room on level one and use the space below for a gym or an additional bedroom which should be properly ventilated and have maximum daylight.”

Job Scope

In this project, I’m assigned to prepare the architecture design drawing according to the managing director’s design. Architectural plan is produced and its label in color for the ease of client’s understanding.

Stonor Introduction

Stonor, a project we named after the road name of the site. It is a Soho apartment located at Jalan Stonor. It is a high rise building with 28 floors. The project is at the ADO stage. However the design of the apartment is still changing by the time I leave the office.

The project is having a CCM meeting every week to discuss all the matters that are concerned. Stonor is a most concerning project in the office where in the last month of my internship, almost all of the colleagues are working on this project together.

Job Scope

Although the office is preparing ADO drawings, I’m not in charge of that part. I was assigned to take part in producing the visual perspective. It is as important as the ADO drawings to show the rough idea of the project to the client. I’ve been doing a few perspective rendering using Lumion and photoshop.

As an Architecture intern in the office, I’m not only limited to architectural jobscope.

Other than involving in those projects mentioned before, I had done:

- Prepare presentation slide.

- Present option to director.

- Set up meeting with director.

- Set up meeting with clients.

- Take meeting’s minute.

- Set up meeting with director.

Tasks like i mentioned above are not architectural related but it helps a lot to improve my personal skills. All the skills that I learned are very much helpful towards my future career.

CO N C LU S I O N

First of all, I would like to thank Mr Huat Lim for giving me the opportunity to work in the office and learn from him. It’s a great journey working in the office that 3 months feels too short. I’ve learned a lot of new skills and also improved some of my skills. To be detailed, I’ve learned a lot of philosophy no matter its about life or design from Mr Huat Lim.

Not only that, I have the skills to be active in a meeting, leading a team and some new techniques of architectural software learned from my colleagues too. All the colleagues in the office were studying overseas, they had taught me about a lot of things that I didn’t learn from the local university. They also shared to me some of their experiences studying overseas.

Throughout this internship at ZLG Design, it increased the interest of me to further study in this industry. Before this I doubted my ability and decided to stop studying. However, after I was surrounded by a bunch of people who are passionate about Architecture studies, I was influenced by them. It is a great honor and experience to work at the office.
