NEDERLAND
WELCOMES YOU
Established in 1897 by railroad developer Arthur Stilwell, Nederland is Dutch for "lowland." Stillwell gave the town its name as a tribute to his investors from Holland who helped to finance the building of a railroad from Kansas City to Lake Sabine.
Dutch Settlers were drawn to the town because its landscape reminded them of their homeland (the southern temps and humidity, however, did not) and so many of the descendants of those early immigrants–families with names like Rienstra and Van Oostrom–still live in the area. Today, the town of some 17,500 people exemplifies the can-do spirit of its earliest settlers and continues to pay homage to its roots.
1. Shop the boutiques along Boston Avenue.
Any trip to Southeast Texas demands a visit to the quaint shops along Nederland's Historic Downtown Boston Avenue. Stroll along the brick sidewalks lined with 19th Century cast iron lampposts to discover one-of-a-kind gifts; clothing and antiques from boutiques like Gaudie & Co., Rustic Door, and Holland House.
2. Learn more about Nederland's history at the Dutch Windmill Museum.
Located in Tex Ritter Park - named for the famed singing cowboy star who once called Nederland home – the 40-foot tall Dutch Windmill Museum was built in the late 1960s as a tribute to the town's Dutch settlers. Free to the public, the museum exhibits numerous mementos from its early days, as well as tributes to Nederland natives like Ritter and track star and world-record setter, W.F. "Buddy" Davis, who brought home the Olympic gold in 1952 for the high jump.
3. Explore Nederland's French Acadian roots at La Maison Acadienne.
Shortly after the Dutch settled in the area, French Acadians – also known as Cajuns – began arriving as well. In honor of those roots, a replica of an authentic Acadian home was constructed next to the Dutch Windmill Museum, La Maison Acadienne – or "house of Acadia" – offers a glimpse into the lives of these Nederland pioneers.
4. Celebrate at the Nederland Heritage Festival.
This family-oriented festival takes place each spring and draws visitors from around the region. The week-long event, in March, includes the Cuisine Walk – a collection of scrumptious food vendors lined along Boston Avenue – arts and crafts booths, live music from local bands, and a petting zoo and carnival rides to delight the kids.
5. Have fun on the 4th in Doornbos Park.
Thousands of people come out each year to enjoy Nederland's 4th of July Fireworks Celebration in Doornbos Park. Food, entertainment, games for the kids and those famous fireworks – you name it, Nederland has it! It's a pyrotechnic show that everyone looks forward to throughout the year! Join the crowd as the community comes together to show its sincere gratitude to the military and their families for the sacrifices they have made for our country.

TOP 5 THINGS TO DO
1. Bring your little ones to Riverfront Park.
Climbing, swinging, crawling, sliding–the park is an outdoor fun for little tykes. There is a volleyball court and picnic tables for families to enjoy outdoor picnics or birthday parties in this beautiful park on the river. Your kids can cool off at the Spray Park afterwards, activating fountains of water to splash in by merely touching the whale’s tail, two groundlevel treasure chests or the light house.
2. Shop the Avenues. Port Neches & Magnolia Ave.
Every Saturday of every month, the shops along Port Neches Avenue and Magnolia Ave. celebrate Shop Local on the Avenue. Activities change monthly and revolve around a theme, and includes food vendors, arts and crafts, and more.
3. Refuel at some of the best restaurants.
There are so many restaurants that you can come out and enjoy a meal with your friends and family. Starting with Neches River Wheelhouse, you can dine on the water and watch the boats roll by. They have amazing food and drinks that the whole family is sure to enjoy. Looking for a great spot for breakfast or brunch? The Feed Store is your go to spot. From the homemade buscuits and pancakes, to the seafood gumbo and many more savory options, you will definitely leave full and ready for dessert. That is when you head on over to Mike's Old fashioned Soda Shop for ice cream or the amazing shakes. You will be taken back in time and everyone will have some fun.
4. Relax and recharge at Riverfront Park.
This 27-acre park offers stunning views of the Neches River, as well as horseshoe pits, a sand volleyball court and two boat ramps to launch your boat for an afternoon on the water. Bring a picnic and your sunscreen, and people watch, bird watch or just plain daydream in the sun. Across the street from the park, check out the Old Port Neches Jail. Built around 1914, the two-cell jail held town law breakers up until the start of World War II. It was refurbished as a historical landmark in 1972.
Port Neches
WELCOMES YOU
Incorporated as Port Neches in 1927, the city was originally known as Grigsby Bluff, named for Joseph Grigsby who settled in the area in 1834. The settlement became an important outpost during the Civil War as the Confederate Army defended the Neches River against the approach of the Union Forces.
Thanks to its riverfront setting, the city of nearly 13,000 has played an important role in the rise of industry in the area as it has in the abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities. Simply put: It’s a great place to unwind, play and explore.
5. Celebrate Riverfest at RiverFront Park.
This four-day extravaganza includes a fishing tournament, live entertainment, a car show, pet show, carnival rides, food and arts and crafts vendors, Mother of the Year Award and a Miss Port Neches Scholarship Pageant. One of the highlights of the festival is the two-day “Thunder on the Neches” Tunnel Boat races. The festivities are held in Port Neches Riverfront Park along the Neches River.
