Button-fix launches two new products
These new products will be ready for this year’s Professional Woodworking Expo at the NEC, where visitors can be the first to see it for themselves.
They have expanded the range of applications for their award-winning, British-made, concealed panel fixings. The NEW Type 3 Flush extends their trusted push-fit fixing system for modern interior fit-outs and furniture construction, and is complemented by the Bonded Button Plate accessory, which enables the system to work with specialist panels that do not accept screws.
Seamless, face-to-face panel fixing with zero gap: Those of you who are familiar with the established Type 3 Button-fix will find the Type 3 Flush a practical evolution. While delivering the same proven push-on, pull-off performance as the original Type 3, the new version introduces a compact oval form that allows the Fix to be fully recessed into panels from 18 mm thickness, enabling panels to meet face-to-face with no gap in between.
The narrow shape also makes the connector particularly useful when mounting to thin battens or narrow frames, offering greater flexibility in situations where space is limited.
The Type 3 Flush maintains the reliability installers expect from the Button-fix system. Being compatible with its existing Button Marker tool and router Multijig, ensures familiar and efficient installation workflow.
Wherever panels need to connect cleanly, securely, and with simple push-on engagement, the Type 3 Flush provides a practical solution.
Type 3 Fish on a window reveal
Flush. Flexible. Effortlessly precise:
Key features of the Type 3 Flush include:
• Strong push-on / pull-off engagement
• Ideal for fully recessed installation to achieve panelto-panel contact
• Also suitable for surface mounting onto narrow battens or frames
• Face-to-face fixing with no gap
• Simple push & click engagement
• Fully recessed or surface-mounted installation options
• 18 mm minimum panel thickness when recessed
Typical applications include furniture construction, panelling around window reveals, and mounting panels at end-of-run or in tight internal corners where only a push-fit connector will work.
A bonded solution for our push-fit panel connectors: Alongside the Type 3 Flush launch, Button-fix has also introduced the Bonded Button Plate, a new accessory designed for situations where panels or substrates cannot easily accept screws
The Bonded Button Plate enables a Type 3 Button to be bonded to thin or specialist materials, making it particularly useful for applications such as solid-surface splashbacks that need to remain removable to access electrical or plumbing services behind.
Smarter solutions for modern installations: Together, the Type 3 Flush and Bonded Button Plate extend the versatility of the Button-fix system, providing installers with more options for cleaner detailing, tighter spaces, and challenging materials.
“The Type 3 Flush is all about achieving precise, faceto-face panel fixing with complete simplicity,” said Julie Freedman, Head of Sales & Marketing at Button-fix. “At the same time, the Bonded Button Plate gives installers a dependable way to use the Type 3 system on materials that can’t be screw-fixed. Together they expand the possibilities of the Button-fix range while keeping installation intuitive and reliable.”
Like all Button-fix components, both products are designed and manufactured in Britain, reflecting the company’s continued commitment to quality engineering, installer-led design, and practical innovation.

Looking beyond spray booth performance
Elmbridge UK works with joinery manufacturers across the UK to design, supply and optimise spray booth and finishing environments. A consistent theme in conversations with joinery manufacturers is that many finishing operations are already performing well. At the same time, there is often potential to improve production and finish quality through closer attention to the finishing environment. It may reveal opportunities that aren’t immediately obvious.
In many joinery manufacturing environments, the spray booth isn’t seen as a problem area, and rightly so. Finishing operations are often well managed, teams are experienced, and production is consistent and meeting demand. But in high-performing shops, the conversation often moves beyond “is it working?” to a more valuable question: is it supporting the level of consistency, throughput and control the operation now requires, or may need in the future?
A spray booth can be operationally sound, compliant, and familiar to the team. At the same time, it may still be quietly influencing efficiency, finish quality and capacity in ways that are easy to overlook.
From Elmbridge UK’s experience working across a wide range of finishing environments, it is rarely about obvious failure. More often, it comes down to subtle constraints that only become visible when the finishing environment is assessed against the demands of the wider process.
Looking Beyond the Obvious
One of the challenges with finishing environments is that they tend to change gradually. Processes are refined over time, operators adapt, and teams develop ways of working that deliver results for today. That creates stability, which is valuable, but it can also mean that small inefficiencies become part of the norm.
Slight variations in finish quality between shifts are often attributed to technique or material differences. In practice, environmental factors such as airflow balance or extraction performance can influence atomisation and overspray settlement at the point of application. They can also affect film build consistency, particularly over longer production runs.
Similarly, when drying times begin to extend slightly, attention often turns to coatings or curing processes Yet the conditions within the booth, air movement, temperature consistency, and how the space is configured. These can all play a role in how finishes settle between coats.
These are not issues that disrupt production in a visible way. They can sit just below the surface, shaping performance in ways that become noticeable over time.
Where Performance Shows Up in Practice
In well-run spray shops, these influences rarely announce themselves as problems. They show up as patterns. Operators making small adjustments to hold a consistent finish. Output settling at a certain level, even when upstream capacity has grown. The occasional contamination issue that doesn’t have a clear, repeatable cause. Slight but noticeable variation in finish across longer runs.
Taken individually, each is manageable. Most finishing teams will recognise at least one of them. The question worth asking is whether, collectively, they point to an environment that is working reliably but not necessarily working as well as it could. It is not a reflection of poor practice. It’s often the result of a well-specified system that has supported production for years, without ever being reassessed against a changing environment.
Refining What Already Works
For manufacturers already operating at a high level, there is no need to overhaul the finishing process, but to tweak it. That usually begins with taking a closer look at how the spray environment supports the wider operation. Airflow consistency across the working area directly affects how coatings are applied and how they behave during application. It is not simply a question of overall extraction volume. The balance between extraction and incoming air also plays an important role in both finish quality and drying performance. These are not marginal considerations.
The layout matters too. How components move through the booth, where operators are positioned during application, how loading patterns affect sight lines and turning space. All of these can influence both efficiency and consistency. It can be the same with lighting. Where visibility is limited, finishes get built up unevenly, coverage gets missed, and the margin for variation widens.
When these elements are properly aligned, the spray booth becomes more than just a piece of equipment. It becomes part of a finishing process that supports consistent application, reduces variation, and helps operators work efficiently and with confidence.
Supporting Performance To Changing Demands
As production requirements change, the finishing environment is often expected to do more. Increased volumes, different product types, and the introduction of new coating systems can all place additional demands on the spray booth. What has worked well may not always provide the same level of support under changing conditions. Especially with increased expectations around consistency and production.
Reviewing spray performance isn’t a criticism. It’s a step forward to understand what incremental improvements better support production demand could now and in the future. And the gap between a working booth and one that fully supports production is worth closing.
where Elmbridge UK can help. Working directly with manufacturers, Elmbridge assesses how finishing environments operate in practice. This includes reviewing the coatings being used, the spray equipment setup, and how both interact with the booth environment. By taking this joined-up approach, Elmbridge can identify where relatively small changes can deliver measurable results. It’s a level of support and expertise that goes beyond the booth itself, looking at the finishing process.
The impact of these improvements is not always dramatic or immediate. However, for manufacturers focused on maintaining quality while improving efficiency, refining how the finishing environment supports production can deliver long-term value
That’s
Rapid Response, Reliable Results
When a critical piece of equipment quite literally fell through at the eleventh hour, William Hercock Ltd found itself in a race against time. With dust extraction installation already scheduled and a growing timber operation ready to launch, the business needed an immediate solution. TM Machinery stepped in, delivering not just a machine but a level of speed, service and support that proved invaluable.
Steve Noel, Timber Manager at the Leicestershire and Rutland based builders’ merchant recalls the situation clearly. “When it came to loading the saw we originally purchased, it was dropped by our supplier, making it no longer fit for purpose. We needed a Plan B and quickly!”
With extraction installation due just days later, the pressure was on to source a suitable replacement. That solution came in the form of a used Striebig Compact vertical panel saw from Leicester-based supplier TM Machinery - setting in motion a rapid response that ensured the project stayed on track.
“We drove to the showroom within hours of finding it,” says Steve. “It had already been refurbished, so it didn’t need much to get it operational. It was a great find. The next step was getting it to site and installed as quickly as possible.”
Just over one week later, the machine was in place at William Hercock Ltd’s new purpose-built facility. “We didn’t expect to find
a supplier that could supply, transport and install a machine in such a short timeframe, but TM managed it.”
Support extended well beyond delivery. TM Machinery provided detailed technical information in advance, enabling seamless coordination with the extraction installers. “They gave us everything we needed – from the footprint to airflow requirements - so installation and commissioning were very straightforward,” Steve adds.
While the urgency dictated a fast purchase, the decision to invest in used machinery was part of a wider strategy. As the company expands its timber offering, managing upfront costs remains a key consideration.
“It’s a big step for a builders’ merchant to move into timber,” Steve explains. “You’ve got extraction, machinery, and the cost of the whole mill set-up to consider. We needed to do it in the most cost-effective way because we don’t yet know what the return will be. It made sense to look at high-quality pre-owned machines.”
In practice, that decision delivered more than expected. “The Striebig Compact turned out to be not just a replacement, but an upgrade. It’s actually a better saw than the one we were going to buy.” Supplied fully refurbished and backed by a six-month warranty, the machine also offered reassurance typically associated with new equipment.
Since installation, the saw has quickly become central to daily operations, supporting a steadily growing workload.
“We’re typically cutting 20 to 30 sheets of MDF, Ply, OSB and Diamond Plex at a time, and it’s building week on week,” says Steve. “Some weeks we’ll have three or four cutting jobs, other weeks the saw is in use every day. Either way, we know we can rely on it.”
Performance has marked a clear step forward compared to previous equipment. “The Striebig Compact is much more accurate than any wall saw I’ve used,” he says. “As a manual machine, it delivers exactly what we need. The guides and measuring devices are far more robust, and it’s safer, lighter and easier to use.”
Dust extraction has also been significantly improved, with collection points at both the saw head and rear panel enhancing efficiency and working conditions, particularly on larger jobs.
“It’s built to do exactly what we need - no more, no less,” Steve adds. Looking ahead, the investment also supports longerterm ambitions. As the business continues to grow its customer base - particularly following the closure of a local competitor - the flexibility of the Striebig provides confidence for the future.
“Future-proofing is important for us,” Steve says. “We don’t know exactly how demand will grow, but the flexibility of the machine gives us reassurance.”
For Steve, however, the defining factor was the service delivered by TM Machinery. “It was excellent from start to finish. The timeframe they worked to was impressive - I’m not sure many other suppliers could meet such tight deadlines.”
Plus, with TM Machinery located nearby, ongoing support is also close at hand - another advantage for a business building its timber operation from the ground up.
As William Hercock Ltd continues to expand - adding staff, growing its customer base and exploring new opportunities - the Striebig Compact is already proving its value. What began as a potentially costly setback has ultimately strengthened the business.
Mirka® DEROS RS 600 is a rotary sander designed for heavy-duty, coarse sanding applications. Its lightweight, compact design provides a smooth operation and enhances user comfort and productivity. The Mirka® DEROS RS is the perfect solution to tackle paint removal, furniture restoration, cabinetry, solid surface and wooden flooring projects with ease. From design intent to machine-ready joinery: why KBB manufacturers are rethinking preparation
Kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom manufacturers are working in a market where expectations have become more exacting at both ends of the process. Customers want more choice, shorter lead times, and a high-quality finish. Production teams need jobs to move through the workshop with fewer surprises, less wasted board, and clearer information at every handover.
For panel and joinery businesses, the pressure is often felt long before a component reaches the machine. It begins in the way a job is designed, priced, engineered, nested, labelled, and released. A small change in a cabinet detail, a hardware requirement, or a machining strategy can affect material yield, set-up time, assembly flow, and the confidence of the people responsible for getting the work out on time.
That is why preparation has become such an important performance lever in KBB manufacturing. It is no longer enough for design software to produce a good visual representation or a set of drawings. Manufacturers increasingly need a connected design-to-manufacture workflow that helps turn customer specific designs into reliable production data, without introducing extra manual steps or interpretation on the shop floor.
The latest release of CABINET VISION from Hexagon has been developed with that reality in mind. The software is widely used across cabinet and case-good manufacturing to connect design, material optimisation, bidding and
costing, cut lists, bills of materials, and CNC output. Its role is to help manufacturers move from screen to machine with greater control, so that decisions made during design and engineering are carried accurately into production.
One of the most important additions is the new True Shape Nesting engine, which delivers nesting performance up to 30 percent faster while supporting better use of sheet material. For KBB component manufacturers, this matters because material is not just a cost line, it shapes margin, planning confidence, and the ability to respond quickly to changing order patterns. Faster nesting can help teams prepare work more efficiently, while more intelligent use of sheet space supports waste reduction and better throughput.
The release also introduces direct formula entry, allowing users to enter formulas directly into value fields. In practical terms, this helps speed up parametric design work and reduces the number of steps needed to create intelligent, repeatable designs. For manufacturers producing madeto-measure kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, and fitted interiors, that kind of flexibility is increasingly important. It allows standardisation to sit alongside customisation, helping teams manage variation without rebuilding the same logic again and again.
A modernised preferences interface is designed to make setup and navigation easier, with clearer organisation and a resizable layout. While this may sound like a usability
improvement rather than a production issue, ease of use is important in busy manufacturing environments. The faster a team can configure the system, find the right setting, or understand how a workflow is structured, the easier it becomes to maintain consistency across users, sites, and shifts.
Connection management has also been improved for more complex joinery environments. The new Type column in Connection Manager helps users group, sort, and manage connections more effectively. For businesses handling varied cabinet constructions, fittings, and joinery libraries, better organisation can reduce the risk of inconsistency and help engineering teams work with greater confidence.
The new Blum EasyStick integration is another practical development for KBB manufacturers. Blum’s EasyStick system calculates fixing positions digitally and moves stops automatically to the correct position, supporting precise drilling and shorter set-up times. By enabling data to be output directly from CABINET VISION to Blum EasyStick, the workflow can become smoother for manufacturers using that equipment, particularly those bridging manual and CNC processes.
Shop floor communication is another area where small improvements can make a meaningful difference. The ability to add custom part parameters directly to labels gives production teams clearer information at the point of use.
Labels are often the link between the digital job and the physical component. When they carry the right information, operators and assemblers can make better decisions, reduce avoidable questions, and lower the risk of rework.
New machining strategies, including Linear Pockets for Tool Sets, further extend the software’s ability to support specific production requirements, including applications such as MDF door production where finish quality and efficient machining are closely linked.
“Manufacturers in the KBB sector are being asked to deliver more variation, more quickly, without losing control of cost, material use, or quality,” said Chip Martin, Senior
Product Manager, Hexagon. “The focus of this release is to make preparation more efficient and more reliable, so that information flows from design to production with fewer gaps and fewer manual interventions.”
For panel and joinery manufacturers, the value of software is increasingly judged by how well it supports real production flow. Does it help estimators, designers, programmers, operators, and assemblers work from the same information? Does it reduce the time between customer approval and machine-ready output? Does it help protect margin by improving material use and reducing avoidable waste?
The latest CABINET VISION release is positioned around those practical questions. Its new capabilities are not simply about adding features, they are about helping KBB manufacturers prepare work more intelligently before material is committed. In a market where customers expect flexibility and production teams need repeatability, that preparation is where speed, quality, and confidence increasingly begin.

A climate of confident anticipation is the prevailing feeling: just under six months before the opening of the 17th edition of SICAM – the International Exhibition of Components, Accessories and Semi-finished Products for the Furniture Industry, to be held at Pordenone Fiere from October 20 to 23 – everything is already in place. The exhibitor list has been online for months, exhibition space at Pordenone Fiere is sold out, and registrations, opened just a few days ago, are already showing strong interest from industry professionals. The expectation is therefore to confirm the results of the last edition: just under 700 exhibitors, more than 30 percent from abroad, 20,000 net square meters of exhibition space, and strong attendance from over one hundred countries. These figures reflect the well-established scenario in which SICAM has been operating for several editions now.
Despite a still complex context, the recently concluded Milan Design Week revealed a climate of widespread optimism: the furniture industry came together with energy and a strong desire to look ahead, confirming positive expectations for the future. Not surprisingly, many of the ideas that emerged at the last edition of SICAM could be seen again in the new products presented in Milan. An atmosphere that will accompany the sector towards the next appointment in Pordenone, an opportunity to meet again.
“The sector undoubtedly needs the optimism, opportunities and willingness to connect that have always distinguished SICAM,” commented Carolina Giobbi, Head of Marketing and Communication. “Now more than ever, there is a need for a trade fair that is enjoyable to attend but also highly concrete, where the product always remains at the center;
a place dedicated to business, where everything needed for the furniture of tomorrow can be found. We are working to offer exhibitors and visitors what has consistently been requested: to create a place where professionals’ time has real value, because every moment is focused on practicality and results.”
SICAM has always been the focus of careful international promotion, through which it continuously reaffirms its role as a must-attend event and explores new ways to engage operators from markets that are increasingly aligning with European taste and more advanced production methods. This year’s “road map” began in Lyon, France (Eurobois, February 3–6), continued to Bangalore, India (Indiawood, February 26–March 2), Birmingham, UK (KBB, March 1–4), Athens, Greece (Medwood, March 27–30), and Sofia, Bulgaria (Technomebel, March 31–April 3). And the journey continues…
Meetings and initiatives like these create opportunities for new collaborations: one example is the agreement with the Economic Assembly of Uzbekistan, an organization that promotes the country’s economy. Thanks to the protocol signed in recent weeks, a delegation of Uzbek entrepreneurs from the furniture sector will attend SICAM this October, looking for semi-finished products, materials, hardware and finishes to help define a more modern and functional living style. www.exposicam.it/en/

From full throttle to full control
How Ecogate transformed dust extraction at David Salisbury
David Salisbury has built a reputation for doing things properly across its operations where quality is always at the forefront of every decision, process, and product made. As the leading UK manufacturer of high-end garden rooms, conservatories, orangeries and kitchens, it has long taken sustainability seriously and is ingrained in the DNA of the business. Biomass heating, LED lighting and solar panels were all adopted early. With many of the major energy investments already in place, rising energy costs brought renewed focus to electricity use - and one area stood out. Dust extraction alone was costing over £100,000 a year - around 90% of total electricity use - and was running at full capacity all the time, regardless of how many machines were in use.
For Steve Carpenter, Head of Facilities, Maintenance and Health and Safety, it was a cost that had become increasingly hard to ignore. “We have five large fans running flat out all of the time,” he explains. “It didn’t matter if one machine was in use or fifty - we were extracting everywhere.”
The System
Across the 1,800m² facility, 69 machines connect to a centralised dust extraction system. In practice, that meant the system was running across two shifts, regardless of how many machines were in use.
The two options on the table were clear: a complete system replacement costing in excess of £600,000 or improving the performance of what was already in place. A site assessment by Extractly confirmed what Steve had already identifiedthe extraction system itself was sound, but it lacked control. As he puts it, “The system was running all of the time. It was absolutely prime for improvement.”
The Approach
Extractly’s solution centred on the installation of Ecogate, an on-demand extraction system. Sixty-nine Ecogate controllers were fitted across the facility, combined with inverter-driven fan control and targeted ductwork modifications. The principle is straightforward: extraction is delivered where and when it is needed, matching airflow to machine demand.
Ecogate control system installed in the workshop at David Salisbury
Real-time monitoring of energy use and system performance via greenBOX
A single machine uses only the extraction it needs, while additional machines increase overall demand. As more machines are switched on, additional gates open automatically to meet that requirement. Instead of all five fans running at full output, the system adjusts in line with demand.
None of this required the system to be replaced Extractly’s approach extended the life of the existing system, reducing the load placed on it, lowering energy use and overall operating costs.
The Results
The effect was immediate. Over the last 30 days, energy usage reduced by 53%, saving over 13,700 kWh and more than £3,000 in electricity costs. Based on overall operating conditions, the system is expected to pay for itself in under two and a half years. As with any investment, the figures were closely scrutinised - three months in, the numbers match expectations, and even the accountant is impressed by the savings.
Real-time visibility through the Ecogate app means Steve can monitor energy use and machine activity at any point - giving the business full oversight of a system that, once set up, largely manages itself.
But the impact on the workshop has been just as noticeable. Before installation, noise levels exceeded 85 decibels. “The biggest difference for the guys on the shop floor is the quietness,” Steve says. Improving the day-to-day working environment and wellbeing of the team is a priority at David Salisbury, and reducing both noise and dust was an important part of that. “When you walk into the workshop, you can instantly tell it’s working as it should - and the guys on the machines have seen such a difference in the dust being extracted away from where they’re working.”
A Broader Impact
This was never just about one electricity bill. Sustainability has long been at the forefront of the business, with a target of reaching net zero by 2030. With extraction previously accounting for around 90% of electricity use on site, it was always going to be central to that goal. Steve describes the Ecogate installation as the last major piece of the puzzle“almost the cherry on the cake.”
Having first come across Ecogate over fifteen years ago, seeing it installed and delivering results carried real personal meaning.
“It is genuinely one of the proudest moments of my career when we switched it on,” says Steve. His recommendation to other manufacturers is unequivocal: “Anyone with an extraction system that is currently uncontrolled should definitely look at Ecogate. It’s just on demand. It’s how it should be.”
For many manufacturers, dust extraction still runs in the background without anyone fully understanding the impactnot just on energy bills, but across the working environment and day-to-day efficiency. At David Salisbury, taking a closer look made all the difference.

New DVP VB315 Claw Pump launches in UK
High-performance vacuum for woodworking applications
A new high-performance vacuum solution for woodworking applications is now available in the UK, as Vacuum Pumps UK introduces the DVP VB315 Claw Pump to the market offering significant performance benefits and cost savings.
In modern woodworking environments, vacuum technology plays a critical role in ensuring precision, consistency, and efficiency. Vacuum beds rely on a stable and reliable vacuum supply to securely hold materials in place throughout the production process and ensure consistent CNC finishing. Any loss of performance can directly impact cut quality, repeatability, and overall productivity.
The DVP VB315 Claw Pump has been engineered to address these challenges, offering a low-cost, robust and efficient alternative to traditional vacuum pump technologies. Designed for continuous industrial use, the VB315 provides consistent vacuum performance, helping manufacturers maintain a secure hold across a wide range of applications— from nested-based manufacturing to pod and rail systems. Vacuum Pumps UK highlights that one of the key issues faced by woodworking manufacturers is the gradual decline in pump performance over time, which is a drawback for rotary vane style pumps, the most commonly used technology for vacuum in woodworking today. As these pumps age, efficiency can fall away, increasing energy consumption and the risk of unexpected failure. This not only compromises production quality but can also lead to costly downtime and repairs.
The VB315 Claw Pump is designed to minimise these risks. Its claw technology enables contact-free operation within the compression chamber, reducing wear and helping to maintain performance over the long term. This results in lower maintenance requirements, improved reliability, and reduced lifecycle costs compared to conventional alternatives. It also brings the bonus of a 20% increase in flow rate, which is a critical factor in woodworking environments. The VB315 is also relatively quiet compared to alternatives.
The system is particularly well suited to the range of vacuum bed sizes commonly found in the woodworking sector, including 4ft x 8ft, 5ft x 10ft, 5ft x 12ft, and 5ft x 20ft configurations. It is equally effective across both flatbed and pod-and-rail setups, offering flexibility for manufacturers operating diverse machinery fleets
In addition to performance benefits, the VB315 also supports improved energy efficiency – an increasingly important consideration for manufacturers facing rising operational costs and sustainability targets.
With its introduction to the UK market, Vacuum Pumps UK is providing woodworking businesses with access to a next-generation vacuum solution designed to enhance productivity, reduce maintenance demands, and deliver consistent, high-quality results.
For woodworking manufacturers looking to optimise their vacuum systems, the arrival of the DVP VB315 represents a timely and practical upgrade

Ten Years of the TAKA-WPR Academy: where knowledge meets the shop floor
A decade ago, TAKA-WPR identified a problem that no adhesive formulation could fix on its own. Today, their Academy stands as the only dedicated training centre for profile and panel wrapping professionals — and its impact speaks for itself.
In the world of hot melt polyurethane adhesives and wrapping machinery, a well-engineered product is only half the story. The other half happens on the production floor — and that’s where things can go wrong in ways no glue manufacturer can anticipate from a laboratory.
The reality that TAKA-WPR observed over years of working with customers across the PVC and wood sectors was consistent: the vast majority of bonding failures are not caused by the adhesive itself, but by application errors Temperature, humidity, machine settings - every variable matters. And with generational change making skilled labour harder to find and retain, the risk of producing defective batches has never been greater.
Ten years ago, TAKA-WPR turned that challenge into a mission. The result was the TAKA-WPR Academy: the only school purpose-built for professionals working in profile and panel wrapping, drawing on more than two decades of accumulated know-how from projects and partnerships worldwide.
What the Academy Actually Delivers
The course catalogue covers the full spectrum of professional needs. Operators new to lamination can access introductory programmes covering spaces, machinery selection and quality control fundamentals.
Experienced teams can deepen their expertise through specialised courses on wooden panel lamination, edgebanding and PVC profile wrapping. Maintenancefocused sessions address the routine practices that keep a plant running at peak efficiency - often the most overlooked and highest-impact area of all.
Every course can be delivered at TAKA’s Italian headquarters or directly on-site at the customer’s facility, and each programme is adapted to the specific context of the team
Results That Go Beyond the Classroom
What sets the Academy apart is the measurable impact it generates after training ends. Participants consistently report immediate improvements in quality, efficiency andperhaps unexpectedly - team morale. In documented cases, the Academy’s methodology has delivered efficiency and productivity gains of 20 to 30%, with an average return on investment of 250 to 400% within the first six months posttraining.
Beyond the numbers, something less tangible but equally valuable tends to emerge: better communication across departments, a more solution-oriented approach to problems, and a team that pulls in the same direction. As one recurring observation from participants puts it, the courses work as a remarkably effective team-building exercise - an outcome nobody planned for, but everybody welcomes.
A Network, Not Just a Course
Joining the TAKA-WPR Academy means entering a professional network with access to ongoing coaching and support - from initial glue selection and in-line testing through to advice on machinery investment decisions. Learning, as the Academy’s approach makes clear, doesn’t end when the workshop does.
Ten years in, the ambition remains the same: to make sure that the knowledge built up over decades in this industry doesn’t stay locked in the heads of a few experts, but reaches every professional who needs it.
PJP are delighted to feature a Q&A with Martin McVicar, founder of Combilift
In 1998, Robert Moffett and I co-founded the business with a unique forklift concept. We designed a truck that could operate like a conventional forklift, moving forwards and backwards, but with the added ability to travel sideways at the flick of a switch. That innovation led to the development of the world’s first multidirectional forklift: the Combilift C4000.
In our first year of operation, we produced 18 units, 17 of which were exported.Since then, the company has grown significantly, and today Combilift machines operate in more than 85 countries worldwide. Recently, we reached another major milestone with the production of our 100,000th forklift. To celebrate this achievement, we launched a special competition to win the exclusive multidirectional Combi-CBE, with all proceeds donated to UNICEF Ireland’s Children’s Emergency Fund. The campaign generated €56,500 in ticket sales, and Combilift increased the total contribution to €100,000.
Our manufacturing plant and headquarters remain in Monaghan, Ireland and we have a team of over 1,000 employees. Our product range has expanded far beyond the original C4000 and now includes pedestrian stackers, articulated trucks, side loaders, container loaders, and straddle carriers, with lifting capacities ranging from 1 tonne to more than 150 tonnes.
From the beginning, innovation has been in our DNA. We invest 7% of annual revenue in R&D and continue to focus on helping customers maximise space, improve safety, and enhance operational efficiency within existing facilities.
How has your plant changed to maximise output and sustainability?
Sustainability is central to everything we do at Combilift, from the products we develop to the way we operate our manufacturing facilities. We are focused on making our vehicles more environmentally friendly while helping customers optimise warehouse efficiency and better utilise existing space.
Today, more than 98% of our R&D investment is dedicated to designing and manufacturing energy-efficient and electric-powered equipment. More than 70% of our current production is now electric, including recent innovations such as the Combi-CB70E and Combi-FSE8000. Almost every model in our range is now available with electric power.
Since opening our new manufacturing facility in 2018, sustainability has been a key part of the plant’s design.
Approximately 30% of the roof space is covered with skylights, reducing the need for artificial lighting. The plant also incorporates rainwater harvesting systems, collecting around 110,000 litres for use throughout the facility and enabling staff to work in natural daylight.
In addition, solar technology installed onsite generates approximately 450kW of energy. We also use water-based paints across the manufacturing process, significantly reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions while creating a safer working environment for employees.
Beyond electrification, our approach to warehouse optimisation also contributes to sustainability. By narrowing aisles, increasing racking heights, and maximising storage density, businesses can reduce energy consumption while making better use of existing facilities.
Our “one-truck-does-all” approach also helps customers reduce fleet sizes by using versatile forklifts capable of operating efficiently in narrow aisles and confined spaces while handling long or bulky loads. This improves operational efficiency and lowers overall carbon footprints.
Give us a top-line overview of your Pedestrian Range –specifically the safety side of these machines.
Safety is central to every product we develop at Combilift. Our design philosophy focuses on delivering solutions that maximise space utilisation and productivity while actively reducing risk in busy warehouse and manufacturing environments.
We are seeing growing demand for pedestrian-operated trucks, particularly in manufacturing facilities and DIY retail environments where forklifts operate close to employees and customers.
Operators remain physically close to both the load and the truck, which further improves operator control and awareness while allowing 360-degree visibility of the load and surroundings.
A key innovation within Combilift’s pedestrian range is our patented multi-position tiller arm design. The tiller arm can be rotated left or right, allowing the rear wheel to pivot parallel to the chassis at the touch of a button. This enables operators to work safely from the side of the truck rather than directly behind it, eliminating any possibility of crush risk when working in confined areas while also preventing product damage.
Alongside enhanced safety, the pedestrian range delivers exceptional manoeuvrability and narrow aisle performance of just 2.1m, making it particularly well suited to industries handling long or bulky products such as timber panels.
Talk us through your warehouse optimisation programme.
At Combilift, we see ourselves as much more than designers and manufacturers of material handling equipment. Space is one of the most valuable assets our customers possess, and helping them optimise that space can make a major difference to operational efficiency, storage capacity, and long-term business costs.
That is why we offer a free, no-obligation warehouse optimisation service delivered by our in-house team of design engineers and layout consultants. The service includes detailed warehouse layout drawings and a full rack or storage bay count tailored to each customer’s products, handling requirements, and workflow.
In many operations, relatively simple layout changes, such as narrowing aisles and increasing racking height, combined with the unique capabilities of Combilift equipment, can increase storage capacity by up to 50% without requiring costly building expansion.
During periods of growth, the principle of “improving, not moving” becomes especially valuable. Rather than relocating or acquiring additional storage space, businesses can unlock new potential by optimising their existing facilities.
Our multidirectional product range, including the Combilift C-Series, CB range, and pedestrian WR, is specifically engineered to operate efficiently in narrow aisles and confined spaces while handling long loads. This allows customers to maximise racking capacity, reduce fleet size, improve safety, and lower their overall carbon footprint.
Combi-Connect – how does this impact clients’ businesses?
Combi-Connect is our cloud-based telematics and fleet management platform designed to give customers greater visibility and control over their operations.
The system provides real-time insights into truck performance, utilisation, operator behaviour, energy consumption, idle times, and maintenance requirements.
This enables customers to make more informed operational decisions and improve overall fleet efficiency.
By monitoring equipment usage in real time, businesses can reduce downtime, improve safety, support preventative maintenance, and optimise productivity across their entire fleet. Combi-Connect is available to both new and existing customers and forms an important part of our wider strategy of combining innovative hardware with intelligent software solutions.
Finally, what’s next for Combilift?
Our strategy for continued growth is centred on innovation, sustainability, and helping customers maximise the value of their existing space, all while making material handling operations safer. Our R&D engineering team is dedicated to developing innovative solutions that enable the safer handling and movement of long and heavy loads.
At the same time, our warehouse optimisation service will remain a key part of the business, helping companies improve storage capacity, safety, and operational efficiency without the need for costly relocation or expansion.

Led by Director Grant Rees, Crispol Interiors is a familyrun business with over 20 years’ experience in designing, manufacturing and installing high-quality bespoke furniture. Established in 2002, the company has developed from a specialist kitchen manufacturer into a highly versatile cabinetry business serving both residential and commercial clients.
Today, Crispol Interiors delivers a wide range of madeto-measure solutions, including kitchens, bedrooms, offices, media walls and custom storage, alongside specialist projects across care homes, retail and hospitality sectors. The business also undertakes high-end residential commissions, including bespoke interiors for professional footballers’ homes, as well as work for major brands such as Tesco and TK Maxx
With a skilled in-house team, Crispol manages the entire process from manufacture through to installation, ensuring consistently high standards across every project. While kitchens remain a core focus, the business has expanded significantly in response to shifting lifestyle trends, particularly in the post-COVID period where demand for bespoke home environments has increased.
As production volumes and expectations around finish quality and turnaround times continued to grow, Crispol recognised the need to modernise key areas of its workshop. The investment decision was driven not just by replacement needs, but by a clear focus on improving productivity, reducing manual processes and supporting long-term growth.
After reviewing the market and considering a range of options, Grant and his team made the decision to invest in the HOLZ-HER Sprint 1329 Power. “I liked the build quality and machine capability. Once I saw it running at the Weinig UK showroom in Abingdon, that was it,” he explained. A key factor in the decision was the machine’s fully CNCcontrolled platform, offering precision adjustment down to 0.01mm. This level of control, combined with fast setup and changeover times, represented a major operational step forward.
“It’s fully CNC controlled, so there’s virtually no manual adjustment. Set-up and changeovers are much quicker, and it only takes around three minutes to clean and change glue colours,” said Grant.
The Sprint 1329 Power also delivers fully finished panels directly off the machine, eliminating the need for secondary processes such as manual glue removal or edge finishing.
“The biggest thing is that panels come off 100% finished every time. There’s no handwork, no glue cleaning or anything afterwards.”
At the heart of the machine’s performance is the HOLZ-HER Glu Jet system, designed to ensure optimal interaction between glue, edging and panel material. Its hybrid technology supports both EVA and PUR adhesives in cartridge or granulate form, with rapid heat-up times and efficient energy consumption contributing to improved productivity.
For Crispol Interiors, the improvement in bond strength and finish quality has been immediate.
“We’re achieving a far better bond than before, and the finish is exceptional. You’d need a chisel and hammer to remove it.”
This has been particularly valuable in specialist environments where durability is critical.
“With children’s care home work, you need absolute confidence that the edge is secure and will not come off.”
Crispol Director Grant Rees - Holz Her Area Sales Manager Richard Hird
removal and edge cleaning were time-consuming manual tasks.
“With the old machines, we were constantly scraping glue off by hand. Now that’s gone completely. It’s saved a huge amount of time and cost.”
Productivity has increased significantly, with the Sprint 1329 Power operating at up to 18 metres per minute compared to around 10 metres per minute previously, effectively doubling throughput. Dual motor corner rounding further enhances both speed and consistency across production.
Ease of use has also supported rapid adoption across the workshop team.
“It looks like an iPhone screen with symbols and buttons. The guys picked it up really quickly.”
The fully CNC-controlled system ensures repeatable results across operators, reducing reliance on individual skill and improving consistency.
From a support perspective, Crispol Interiors highlighted a positive experience from initial engagement through to installation and commissioning.
“The whole process has been brilliant from start to finish,” said Grant. “Area Sales Manager Richard Hird was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful throughout, guiding us clearly and efficiently at every stage, as was the Weinig engineer, who ensured installation, setup, and commissioning ran smoothly from start to finish”
Direct access to technical support from Matthew Boak, Weinig Technical Support Demonstrator, ensured that any post-installation questions were answered efficiently and operations continued smoothly.
“Matt was incredibly helpful, sending videos that clearly showed what to do whenever anything was unclear.”
Overall, the investment in the HOLZ-HER Sprint 1329 Power has delivered a clear step change in performance for Crispol Interiors, improving finish quality, increasing throughput and significantly reducing manual labour requirements.

Taylor Made Joinery Interiors secures the next decade of growth with HOMAG
Leading UK specialist contractor Taylor Made Joinery Interiors (TMJ) has reinforced its long-standing partnership with HOMAG through the installation of a new CENTATEQ P-610 CNC, DRILLTEQ V-310 drilling centre, and EDGETEQ S-300 edge bander. As part of a planned reinvestment strategy, these upgraded machines ensure the company remains at the cutting edge of manufacturing technology.
A strategy of continuous reinvestment
Established in 1981, TMJ Interiors has grown into one of the UK construction industry’s leading bespoke joinery specialists. Operating from its 80,000 sq ft headquarters in Bildeston and employing over 220 staff, the company has delivered on several high-profile projects including Windsor Castle, the Royal Opera House, the London 2012 Olympics and, most recently, projects for some of the world’s leading financial institutions.
For TMJ, investment in technology has always been strategic rather than reactive. “Basically, these were replacements for machines that had reached a certain age,” explains Pat Coll, Operations Director at TMJ. “We like to change our machines every ten years or so to ensure we remain at the cutting edge.”
The new CENTATEQ P-610 replaces a previous model on a like-for-like basis, while the upgraded DRILLTEQ V-310 and EDGETEQ S-300 introduce modern enhancements to proven systems. “Our previous HOMAG machines had gotten our business to where we wanted it, and were still running well; it was simply time to pass on the baton.”
A 25-year partnership
TMJ’s decision-making process was straightforward. “Our old machines were HOMAG, and we had zero hesitation going with HOMAG again. We’ve been with them for 25 years; 95% of our kit is HOMAG. They are a true partner of ours and have been instrumental in the expansion of our business.” Over that period, TMJ has grown from a team of 40 to over 200. “These machines, which are very easy to operate, have streamlined everything, increased our capacity by about 200%, and given us a level of quality and consistency that us old-school joiners could have only dreamed of.”
Seamless installation and upskilling
“The installation of these three machines was absolutely topnotch,” says Pat. “It was so smooth and efficient that I sent an email to HOMAG UK’s Managing Director, Simon Brooks, to thank him and his team for their outstanding service.”
Next came the training, and this too delivered on all the right fronts. While the new machines were largely familiar to operators, TMJ used the opportunity to expand its internal capability.
“We’re big believers in the development of our own people. With HOMAG’s help, we’ve been able to upskill many of our employees, which gives us better holiday and sick cover, and has made our team stronger as a whole.”
Built for the future
“The subtle upgrades present on the new DRILLTEQ V-310 and the EDGETEQ S-300 have helped us push the envelope that little bit further in terms of efficiency and capacity,” explains Pat. “It’s amazing what you can now do with the latest tech.”
For the most part, however, we’ve simply replicated the capabilities of our previous set-up, and that’s all we needed to do. The CENTATEQ P-610 remains a powerhouse and a cornerstone of our operation. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
“With these brand new machines in place, we’ve essentially secured our continued growth for at least the next decade.”
The people behind it
Like the machines, HOMAG’s customer service continues to impress. “Our local rep, Sam Over, has been brilliant. Always friendly and helpful; if ever we have a problem he jumps right on it. The same goes for Phil Pitchford, the CNC Product Manager, whose support and expertise is second to none.
“Everyone from the sales team to the engineers has provided the exceptional service we’ve come to expect from HOMAG. It’s all been so smooth right the way through.
“A special mention also to Charles Smith, who was our area rep for many years. He’s taken a step back now, but we always had a fantastic relationship with him and we’re grateful for everything he’s done for us.”
Pat concludes: “A big thanks from the whole team at TMJ for all of HOMAG’s support. We couldn’t imagine going with another supplier. As ever, we’re excited to see where this partnership will take us in the future.”

Chemique Adhesives introduces Solfre PressSmart INDUSTRY
Advanced Three-Component Polyurethane Adhesive for Precision Panel Manufacturing in Varying Temperatures.
Chemique Adhesives, a leading UK manufacturer of high-performance industrial adhesives and adhesive application equipment has launched Solfre PressSmart, an advanced three-component (3C) polyurethane adhesive system designed to maximise efficiency, improve flexibility, and ensure consistent output in sandwich panel manufacturing.
Enhanced
Control Through Dual Catalyst Technology
Solfre PressSmart consists of two Part A components and a single Part B hardener. The two Part A components contain different catalyst levels – one fast-curing and one slowcuring providing manufacturers with the ability to adjust processing times in real time and maintain consistent results regardless of ambient temperature.
By varying the blend ratio of the fast- and slow-curing Part A components during application, manufacturers can precisely control open time, press time, and total cure time to match production requirements.
Automated application equipment precisely mixes the two Part A components at the required ratio, guaranteeing consistent performance for each panel. This provides a wide processing window, with open times ranging from 10 to 100 minutes and total cure times from 30 to 300 minutes, enabling reliable adhesive performance in both hot and cold production environments.
“Solfre PressSmart marks a significant step forward for panel manufacturers who require both accuracy and flexibility,” said Stuart Francis, Managing Director of Chemique Adhesives.
“The three-part system delivers precise control of open and press times, allowing for consistent processing times across a range of temperatures. This enables manufacturers to maximise throughput while maintaining the highest quality standards.”
Boosting Productivity with On-Demand Processing Adjustments
For even greater production efficiency, Solfre PressSmart allows ratios to be adjusted between adhesive coats.
Increasing the proportion of the fast-curing Part A component in later coats shortens press times without affecting open time or handling characteristics.
For example, a panel that typically requires 180 minutes in the press when using a conventional Solfre adhesive (with a 60-minute open time) can be cured in approximately 120 minutes when processed with Solfre PressSmart, significantly improving cycle time and throughput.
A New Standard for Panel Manufacturing
With its adjustable catalyst ratios, wide processing window, and compatibility with existing application equipment, Solfre PressSmart sets a new benchmark for adaptability and process control in sandwich panel manufacturing.
It delivers reliable results across seasonal temperature changes and demanding production environments, enabling manufacturers to maintain quality while increasing operational efficiency.

Gresham streamlines production with HOMAG batch machinery
In August 2025, Gresham Office Furniture invested in a HOMAG Batch Size 1 board system, replacing multiple standalone machines with a single, integrated production cell. As a result, Gresham has significantly improved cut consistency, reduced labour requirements, and maintained output while moving from two shifts to one.
About the company
As one of the UK’s longest-established designers and manufacturers of workspace furniture, Gresham Office Furniture has spent nearly 50 years combining British craftsmanship with progressive manufacturing methods. Operating from a 14-acre site in Bolton, with over 200 employees and a 200,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility, continuous investment in technology is central to maintaining quality, consistency, and competitiveness.
Most recently, Gresham has restructured its panel processing operation with a HOMAG Batch Size 1 board system, bringing together a SAWTEQ S-300, a SAWTEQ S-320 flexTec connected to two STORETEQ P-500’s and an EDGETEQ S-810, a LOOPTEQ C-500, and an XES 200 – all integrated into one production cell.
Addressing consistency and labour challenges
Gresham’s decision to invest was driven by two familiar challenges in modern manufacturing: consistency and skills.
“We had a couple of older saws, and one of the things we were struggling with was getting consistent cuts,” explains David Openshaw, Operations Manager at Gresham. “At the same time, it’s becoming harder to find people with the right skill sets. Fewer people are going into manufacturing, so we needed to bridge that labour gap.”
Previously, Gresham operated with two angle saws and multiple edge banders. The new HOMAG solution replaces that setup with a streamlined board system, designed to deliver accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency with fewer operators.
A natural choice: HOMAG
Gresham’s relationship with HOMAG stretches back decades, making them the natural partner for this latest investment. “We’ve always had HOMAG machines,” says David. “We know how HOMAG work, we know the quality is there, and our operators are already familiar with the software. That made it an easy decision.”
Working closely with the HOMAG team, Gresham explored a number of options before settling on a cell that best suited their production mix. “HOMAG really understood what we were trying to achieve,” David adds. “Their knowledge was invaluable in helping us land on the right solution.”
Training, installation and confidence from day one
To ensure a smooth transition, Gresham invested heavily in training. Operators were sent to Germany for in-depth instruction on each part of the system, followed by on-site support during installation.
“Installation went very smoothly,” says David. “HOMAG engineers were on-site, providing additional training to both operators and maintenance staff. That meant we could use the cell confidently and to its full potential almost immediately.”
Doing more with less
The impact of the new Batch Size 1 line has been significant in terms of efficiency. “Previously we were running two shifts,” David explains. “Now we can achieve the same output in just one.”
The labour savings have been equally impressive. “We’ve gone from 28 people in that department down to nine. That’s allowed us to redeploy skilled people elsewhere in the business and become far more cost-efficient.”
Beyond productivity, quality has also improved. “The finish is consistently perfect,” David says. “That level of consistency is a huge benefit for us.”
A partnership built for the future
While advanced automation inevitably comes with a learning curve, David is clear about the value of HOMAG’s support.
“With machinery like this, there are always teething issues,” he
says. “HOMAG understand that. Their customer service matches the quality of their machines; they’re always available and happy to help.”
He concludes: “We’re excited to see what our long-standing partnership with HOMAG will bring in the future.”

Safe Woodworking needs Safe Machinery
The attractiveness of wood has a lot to do with its market price when compared with other materials. Therefore, efficient and cost-effective manufacturing is required. With processing techniques from Hoffmann this objective can be easily achieved. High Quality items made of wood and at attractive prices. Frames, cassettes and architraves, the focus is on the classic mitre joint, which is secured with the highly structural and durable connecting element, “The Hoffmann Key”. For safe Woodworking you also need “safe” machinery. This means maximum security for the operator of the machine and safe design for the future. You can rely on Safe Working with the Hoffmann MS-35, and MS-35-SF.
Process
The work-piece is laid on the table and positioned for cutting. The start button is pressed to begin the machine cycle and the profile is clamped. Both saw units’ cycle from above to make the mitre cuts. The parts remain clamped whilst the tables open to allow the router units to rout one or two dovetail slots for jointing with Hoffmann Keys, sizes W-1/2/3. The machine tables close and the finished work-piece is removed. The next machine cycle begins. The Machine Safety Guard closes automatically after starting the processing cycle and re-opens when complete. A clear vision panel retains the dust and scrap end, for better operator comfort. A fence stop system is also available for longer profiles up to 4000 mm. It can be used solely as a Double Mitre Saw, to cut to length profiles such as glazing beads, cornices plinths etc. in wood, aluminium, and plastic at 45° angles and can also be integrated with a cross-cut saw to make the square cut and control the length.
Further special improvements were made to the Double Mitre Combination machine MS 35-SF. The Hoffmann design team developed technology which reduced the vibrations created on the saw blades. This resulted in an increase in the precision and accuracy of both mitre cuts so that no further work was required prior to joining. This uncompromising accuracy is particularly important when the finished surface joint is visible. This high-quality cut as
well as high quality routing is achieved by almost vibrationfree running of the machine, the body of which is extremely robust and weighs about 700 kg. A chip breaker provides a chip-free cut. Another feature is the extremely low noise level which is immediately noticeable. The range has now evolved to include the MS40-SF. With a larger saw blade (400mm), the cutting width increases to 105mm and a new waste ejector automatically removes off cuts at the front of the unit. Automatic router positioning is also available via NC axis and touch screen adjustment.
“We currently use the Hoffmann MS35-SF to produce glazing bead cassettes for our fire doors and glazed screens. Using the Hoffmann jointing system not only improves the process by simplifying it, but it has also increased the quality of the finished joint and the speed at which it is produced. Because the joints are so accurate and secure, there is less filling required on the joints before spraying and the cassettes can be lacquered before fitting into the door. Production of the vision panel has increased by roughly 20% since having the Hoffmann machinery installed.”
Branch manager, Mitch Johnson. Door and Joinery Solutions.
“Over the many years of manufacturing, many of our machines have required replacing and updating as expected, but the Hoffmann MS 35-SF has continued to manufacture a precision product with only routine maintenance required, and we see no reason to replace it in the near future. This combination machine not only cuts the perfect mitres but simultaneously routers the dovetail slots for the Hoffmann Keys. Ahmarra have a long relationship with Hoffmann, and our current Hoffmann MS 35-SF has been in operation for over 20 years, and still performs with the expected accuracy and precision that it did the day it was installed”

Biesse - Solid wood processing moves from tradition to technology
When it comes to manufacturing with solid wood, it has long been rooted in traditional manufacturing methods, with a heavy reliance on skilled manual labour. While craftsmanship remains central to the industry, manual processes are increasingly challenged by modern realities: rising labour costs, skills shortages, material pressures, and heightened safety expectations. As a result, manufacturers are reassessing how work is done on the shop floor.
One of the key drivers of change is safety. Manual machining and handling of solid timber carries inherent risks, particularly in high-volume environments such as window and door manufacturing. Over recent years, building safety regulations have been brought sharply into focus across the UK. This has introduced the need for industry change, with increasing demand for fire doors, compliant windows, and safer, more traceable production processes to exceed the latest regulations.
At the same time, many businesses are facing resource constraints. Experienced operators and skilled joiners are harder to recruit and retain, and labour costs continue to rise. To remain competitive and maintain throughput, manufacturers are increasingly turning to advanced CNC technology that reduces dependency on manual intervention while improving consistency and operator safety.
At Biesse, wood machinery has emerged as a strong partner in this transition. Machines such as the Rover Multi Up M G P, with pod-and-rail architecture, are seeing growing adoption among UK solid wood windows and door manufacturers. These systems allow complex machining with support from the 5-axis capabilities, allowing jointing, and hardware integration to be completed accurately in a single setup, reducing material waste, rework, and manual handling – all while retaining high quality standards. The Rover Multi Up M G P also offers a conventional pod-and-rail processing application, giving flexibility for businesses to utilise the machine for a wide range of products outside or windows and doors.
As the industry responds to increased order volumes, stricter safety standards, and changing workforce dynamics, CNC automation is no longer just an efficiency upgrade, it is becoming essential for keeping solid wood manufacturing viable, safe, and future-ready
Supporting Complexity and Enabling Business Growth
Beyond efficiency and safety, Biesse’s approach to supporting businesses working with solid wood is increasingly focused on helping manufacturers manage growing product complexity. Market demand for bespoke designs, certified fire ratings, and tight dimensional tolerances has placed pressure on traditional production methods. CNC machinery such as the Rover Multi Up M G P are designed not only to produce components accurately and efficiently, but also to support flexible manufacturing requirements that modern businesses face
The Rover Multi Up M G P enables manufacturers to handle complex joinery, multi-process machining, and high-precision operations on a single platform. This level of control allows businesses to consistently meet compliance standards while reducing setup times and human error. Importantly, it also provides the flexibility to switch between product types with minimal disruption, something that is increasingly valuable in a market driven by short lead times and custom specifications.
For many UK manufacturers, this capability opens the door to expanding their product portfolio. Companies traditionally focused on standard solid wood components can diversify into products such as fire-rated doors, engineered windows, staircase components or bespoke architectural elements without fundamentally restructuring their operations. By investing in adaptable CNC solutions, businesses are not just improving today’s production, but are positioning themselves for sustainable growth in an evolving and more regulated construction environment.
Seeing the Technology in Action
To support manufacturers on this journey, Biesse are running a series of technology events throughout the year, designed to showcase how CNC machinery and software can support complex solid wood applications such
as beautifully finished furniture, windows, doors, stairs, and fire-rated products.
With the next event taking place on 21st May, this will offer manufacturers the opportunity to see machines running live, understand how the software integrates with production, and explore how advanced CNC solutions can replace or support traditional manual processes. Attendees will gain practical insight into how solid wood manufacturing is evolving from conventional methods to automated processes through the latest Biesse technology.

Concealed Door Hardware: for form or function?
In many residential and commercial environments, sliding and folding door hardware appears to be disappearing; but this vanishing act is no accident. Concealed door systems are a deliberate design choice reflecting modern project requirements, explains David Knollman of Brio UK.
Once considered premium or niche, concealed sliding and folding door systems have become a widely selected option for projects where architectural cohesion is essential.
As specifiers and end users alike continue to prioritise uninterrupted sightlines, refined visual details and spacesaving properties, concealment offers a compelling answer.
Concealed sliding and folding door hardware systems are engineered to integrate seamlessly into the fabric of a building, with tracks and mechanisms hidden within ceilings, walls or door leaves. By this effect, doors appear almost weightless as they open and close and offer spaces a more refined aesthetic. This provides real value to spaces looking to combine functionality with a minimalist artistic style, where in comparison, systems with exposed tracks, hinges and rollers can interrupt - or even dominate - the visual scheme.
The shift towards concealed hardware is not a stylistic choice alone. Specification teams can now deliver tangible performance benefits too, with advanced solutions supporting controlled movement in multi-functional settings. Reliable concealed tracks and roller mechanisms help to ensure smooth operation even in the most demanding or high-traffic environment
Flexibility is an advantage offered by concealed systems too. Modern applications support wider openings and adaptable layouts and are able to accommodate any number of panels on single or multiple lines of rail.
Safety is another characteristic of concealed hardware, whereby housing the moving components of a system within the door, ceiling or floor structure, the risk of accidents can be reduced. This is particularly beneficial in residential or public-facing environments - soft-close and damping technologies are now often integrated within concealed systems as a way of further enhancing operational control, improving both safety and user experience in the process.
From an installation perspective, today’s concealed hardware solutions are designed with simplicity in mind. Modular components and pre-engineered kits make installation more predictable, improving the accuracy of fittings and reducing on-site complexity. This approach helps to ensure hardware performance standards are retained long after the initial installation period.

Combilift: Lifting innovation to unlock every inch of your storage space
In today’s competitive timber sector, where every square metre counts and land prices continue to rise, optimising existing storage space has never been more critical. Expanding or relocating facilities can be costly and disruptive, but maximising your current facility offers a more efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective alternative - unlocking new potential without major investment or operational downtime. In this challenging environment, more companies are embracing the philosophy of ‘improving, not moving’, making the most of the space they already have.
With nearly three decades of experience, Irish materialhandling specialist Combilift combines its versatile range of multidirectional forklifts with intelligent warehouse design to help businesses do more with less space — safely, efficiently, and profitably.
Combilift’s Free Warehouse Planning Service
“We have always viewed Combilift as more than just a forklift manufacturer. Space is one of the most valuable assets our customers possess, and if our trucks can help them improve storage density, everyone benefits,” explains CEO and Cofounder Martin McVicar.
Combilift’s team of experienced design engineers provides a complimentary warehouse and yard planning service, creating customised layouts that maximise storage capacity based on the capabilities of Combilift equipment. By reducing aisle widths and making better use of vertical space, companies can increase storage capacity by up to 50% while also improving workflow efficiency and safety. This approach ensures that every project delivers measurable gains in storage density, productivity, and operational safety.
Farrell Furniture, which designs and manufactures contract, office, and residential furniture from its base in Ardee, Co. Louth, Ireland, is a clear example of how optimising existing facilities can drive significant growth.
Farrell’s Joint CEO, Brendan Farrell, explains:
“Our warehouse is the same size it was when we got our first Combilift, but over the last few years, we have quadrupled in growth. This is testimony to how Combilift’s original layouts future-proofed us. Due to the lift height of 6m of our C4000 model we have been able to go up not out. The truck’s ability to travel sideways as well as block stack, plus its inherent stability means that even our largest loads – 3.6 x 2m for example - can be very safely moved around and easily accommodated in the space available.”
Continuous
Innovation
Innovation lies at the core of Combilift’s DNA, with 6% of annual revenue invested in research and development In recent years, the company has introduced a range of advanced solutions tailored to the specific demands of the timber industry, including its latest electric models, the Combi-CB70E and the Combi-FSE 8000

A bespoke kitchen for a historic toll house
James Latham supports Prestige Interior Projects specify premium Cleaf surfaces for a unique renovation challenge
When Prestige Interior Projects took on the renovation of a private residence incorporating a historic toll house, the brief faced an unusual design challenge. Working closely with James Latham, Director Bradley Jeffries specified two complementary Cleaf melamine finishes, Azimut (S022 Portland) for the tall units and Cheope (FB49 Glauco), for the base units.
The materials needed to balance contrasting client preferences while delivering a contemporary kitchen that respected the character of the original octagonal building. The result is a carefully considered design that seamlessly bridges heritage and modern living
Where heritage meets contemporary design
The clients wanted a kitchen that would feel at home within their modern extension, while remaining sensitive to the character of the original toll house. Adding to the complexity, the two clients had opposing aesthetic preferences: one favoured darker tones, the other lighter finishes.
Bradley Jeffries knew that selecting the right materials would be critical to the success of the project.
From design challenge to technical excellence
Bradley specified Cleaf Azimut (S022 Portland) for the tall units, a lighter panel with natural timber grain, and Cleaf Cheope (FB49 Glauco) for the base units, a darker panel featuring a subtle diamond pattern.
“The diamonds in the FB49 complement that odd octagonal shape of the old toll house,” explains Bradley. “It’s a subtle little detail that pulls the toll house into the new extension.”
The dual-colour approach achieved multiple objectives. Using the lighter Portland on the larger tall units helped maintain a sense of openness, while the darker Glauco grounded the base units, creating balance and satisfying both clients’ colour preferences. Importantly, both finishes harmonised perfectly with the pre-selected stone.
Technical excellence in fabrication
Beyond aesthetics, Cleaf delivered unexpected technical advantages during fabrication. Bradley found the boards significantly outperformed the standard materials he typically uses for internal components.
“It’s a very strong, solid material,” he says. “It’s heavier than some of the more recognised melamine brands, and crucially, it stays straight when cut.”
Cleaf maintained its integrity, resulting in cleaner lines and a superior overall finish. The deep textured surfaces also add depth, with subtle undulations that catch and reflect light across the grain.
The art of grain matching
One of the most impressive technical achievements of the project was the precision grain matching across multiple boards. Several kitchen runs exceeded the length of a single sheet, requiring meticulous alignment.
A 12-month journey
From initial discussions to final installation, the project took approximately 12 months. This allowed Bradley, Leonie Jeffries and the wider Prestige Interior Projects team to fully develop the design, source premium Cleaf materials through James Latham, and deliver the installation with exceptional attention to detail.
The result is a kitchen that successfully bridges two architectural worlds, balancing light and dark, heritage and contemporary design, while delivering the lasting quality Prestige Interior Projects is known for.
Looking ahead
Based on the performance of Cleaf in this project, Bradley now recommends it for all display applications where quality and longevity matter.
“I’d always offer Cleaf for anything that’s on show,” he confirms. “It’s a premium brand product, slightly more expensive than the alternatives, but the quality justifies it. For high-end projects where clients want furniture that lasts, it’s the right choice.”
AkzoNobel Powder Coatings launches Eco+ Services
As part of its sustainability offering, AkzoNobel Powder Coatings has introduced Eco+ Services – a suite of technical, digital and data-driven services designed to help manufacturers better understand, measure and improve the sustainability of their coating operations
Eco+ Services combines digital tools, technical expertise and verified environmental data to give customers a clearer understanding of their coating processes and environmental footprint. From assessing carbon footprint and energy consumption to identifying opportunities to enhance performance, the services provide practical insights that help manufacturers translate sustainability ambitions into measurable operational improvements.
The services address several key priorities for manufacturers today, from improving operational efficiency and optimizing coating processes to lowering energy consumption and increasing transparency around environmental performance. By making sustainability metrics clearer and easier to measure, Eco+Services enables manufacturers to own their impact, with insights that show where operational and environmental gains can be achieved.
“Customers today are looking for more than high-performance coatings,” said Jorrit van Rijn, Marketing Director of AkzoNobel Powder Coatings. “Manufacturers want partners who can help them run more efficient coating operations and better understand their environmental footprint. Eco+ Services gives customers the insights they need to improve performance and make informed decisions about their operations.”
The Eco+ Services span three areas: application optimization, energy savings and access to verified environmental data.
Application optimization helps manufacturers improve coating consistency, reduce material consumption and increase operational efficiency. A key example is Flightpath Pro, an AI-based solution developed in close partnership
with coatingAI that optimizes spray gun settings during application. Using cloud-based data analysis, the software helps reduce defects and overspray while delivering more consistent coating thickness and lower material consumption.
Energy savings are supported through energy and carbon footprint consulting, using data-driven assessments of curing operations to help manufacturers improve coating line efficiency and identify opportunities to reduce energy use and emissions.
Verified environmental data supports customers’ sustainability reporting and project requirements. This includes a third-party certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the Interpon D powder coatings range, developed in accordance with ISO 14025:2006 type III declaration and EN 15804:2012+A2:2019/AC:2021. The EPD transparently reports the environmental impact of the coatings across their lifecycle, helping customers better understand the footprint of their coating choices and support green building certification schemes such as LEED and BREEAM
In addition, AkzoNobel provides product carbon footprint data calculated in line with ISO standards, offering further insight into the emissions associated with its powder coatings products.
“Our technical expertise has always been central to how we support customers and we continue to expand how we help customers improve the sustainability and performance of their operations,” adds van Rijn. “By combining our specialist knowledge with digital tools and environmental insights, Eco+ Services helps manufacturers improve coating performance, reduce carbon footprint and gain clearer visibility of their environmental impact. It’s about turning sustainability into measurable operational improvements and giving customers the confidence and information they need to own their impact.”
