News Changes At Teknos GBI

Teknos GBI head office has moved. Their head office will be located at 7 Longlands Rd, Bicester in brand new, purpose-built premises.

The new facilities will house state-of-the-art warehousing, packing and distribution facilities, a training and testing area with application equipment for spraying, UV-coating and other coating systems, and office space for over 25 members of staff.

Mirka Invests In Training Centre Of The Future

Mirka UK has opened its new state-of-the-art national training centre in Milton Keynes. The investment is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to providing its customers with expert training and development around their high-quality abrasive, tooling and polishing solutions, enabling businesses to improve their production, output and profit performance.

The training centre will offer customised training programmes for groups of up to 12 delegates based on the customers’ needs and requirements.

The Electric Drill Inventor Keeps Fuelling Its Cordless Revolution

Having launched new cordless grinders and a hammer drill earlier in the year, FEIN is extending its 18V product range with the ACAM 18 QSW 4-speed cordless drill/ driver. This is an alternative version of the 12 and 18 volt ASCM machine, already popular within the community but with two benefits. Weinig Establishes New Business Unit Automation & Digital Business

Weinig and Holz-Her are strengthening their market presence in North America. The subsidiary of the German Weinig Group, which has been operating from Mooresville in the east of the USA since 1976, is opening an additional location on the West Coast.

From December this year, the wide portfolio of the leading technology provider for solid wood and panel processing can also be experienced live in Anaheim, California. The heart of the 600 square meter facility is a fully equipped Expocenter for the machines and systems of the premium manufacturer. In addition to daily demonstrations, the new location will be used for in-house trade fairs, exhibitions, conferences and training courses. The date for the next SICAM exhibition has been set for October 2019 from Tuesday 15th to Friday 18th.

People Three new representatives for Blum UK brings the total workforce in the UK to 50 Blum UK are delighted to add to their workforce in the UK with two new Customer Services Representatives and a new addition to their Retail Services Representative team as well.

Diane McKenna joined Blum in June 2018, after first encountering them about 15 years ago when she worked at NESP where her work involved championing Blum Products. After a stint at Decorpanel, McKenna now has her dream job working with Blum, where she is thoroughly enjoying the environment of working in this great team of people.

Leigh Pritchard also started in June this year, and is the CSR for the Midlands. Pritchard comments that he loves the scope of the job, even if there is a lot to learn, but he has been getting lots of help and advice from everyone, the family atmosphere – dating from 1952, is a huge attraction.

Tom Griffin also joined in June 2018, as the RSR for the North of England, having worked in the worktop industry for a decade. Griffin remarks: “Since joining Blum I’ve not felt out of place one bit. The work is incredibly interesting, Blum’s facilities are awesome and each and every employee will always say hello and no one will shy away from offering to help. My fondness for the colour orange has grown considerably since I started at Blum and now I even have orange shoelaces!”

Gregor Baumbusch Appointed New Chairman Of The Management Board (CEO) At its meeting on December 11th 2018, the Supervisory Board of Michael Weinig AG appointed Mr. Gregor Baumbusch as Chairman of the Management Board with effect from 1 January 2019. This was announced by the Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Thomas Bach, following a resolution of the Supervisory Board.

Mr. Baumbusch has been appointed by the Supervisory Board to adapt the corporate strategy to the new challenges in the market and to further develop WEINIG with regard to digitization. This will ensure a sustainable strengthening of the WEINIG Group with the two brands WEINIG and HOLZ-HER. Previously, Mr. Baumbusch had presented the first guidelines of a new corporate strategy to the Supervisory Board. In his new function as CEO, he will also continue to assume his previous responsibility for Sales and Marketing. In addition, Mr. Baumbusch will temporarily take over the function of Chief Technology Officer until this position is filled again.

“Mr. Baumbusch has taken on a major challenge. The Supervisory Board is certain that he has found the right personality for this task. Mr. Baumbusch is characterized by a high level of sales and technical competence as well as assertiveness and the ability to work in a team, which is the optimal prerequisite for the desired change. We wish him every success and look forward to continuing our constructive and trusting cooperation,” added Dr. Bach.

Leitz Tooling’s Brian Maddox Celebrates 40-Year Service

Anyone who knows Brian knows he doesn’t do anything by halves. This means that we’re not talking 24 hours in a comfy bath of baked beans. Brian has been the driving force behind Team Leitz’s fantastic Three Peaks Challenge achievement, has trained hard for - and survived - the London Marathon, and most recently led a team from Leitz in the gruelling 100km Race To The Stones. Brian has raised tens of thousands of pounds for local causes, including Haven House Children’s Hospice for life-limited children and their families.

Leitz appointed C D Monninger as Leitz’s sole UK agent and strengthened this relationship in 1982 by acquiring C D Monninger to expand its European sales and service organisation. Brian stayed in sales and advanced to national sales manager for Leitz UK in 1990 when the company moved from Tottenham to its current purpose-built site in Harlow. Harlow today is Leitz UK’s headquarters and one of the largest diamond tool sharpening centres in the UK. Brian says, “Helping others in work or life is a privilege. Whether you care about the orangutans, the environment or the kids in our world, it is just fantastic when you get to do your part, or sometimes insane things, to make what difference you can. A couple of years ago a few of us from Leitz were invited to Haven House Children’s Hospice to see the work they do. I could not contemplate what these poor children go through and the effect their illnesses have on their families, but our visit was eye opening; Haven House is a truly wonderful place. The kind nature of everyone, the support they give to children during their short lives and the families, is unbelievably positive.”

Events SCM’s “Smart&Human Factory” Is Here The Open House event of the world leader in the field of secondary woodworking technologies to be held in Rimini, from 31 January to 2 February 2019. This enhances returns on investment and route reconfiguration flexibility, in line with process modularity requirements - in addition to streamlining maintenance tasks.

Master Watch Supervision software to manage and monitor the state of each product being machined throughout the process. Panel cutting, edgebanding and drilling phases are thus optimised to obtain the same results as in standard production processes; orders are then put back together at the end of the process, delaying customisation until this stage. This avoids huge quantities of logistically scattered items and helps minimise waste and rejects.

IoT: the innovative “Maestro connect” platform makes the most of the “Internet of Things” concept potential. Case study HOMAG’s Woodcad|CAM Software Revolutionises Aquapac Furniture Aquapac Furniture, founded in 1996, is one of the biggest manufacturers of flat pack aquarium cabinets and vivariums in the UK. In addition, it produces other wood based products such as POS display stands and offers a simple cut and edge panel service for local tradesmen.

The company, led by managing director, Stephen Connachan, is currently going through a major expansion programme and has partnered with HOMAG for woodworking machinery and software.

Aquapac has recently moved from four leased units in Maryhill in Glasgow (which amounted to 22,000 sq. ft.) to a new single 50,000 sq. ft. facility in Cumbernauld that the company has bought outright. This has enabled it to expand and offer products to a new marketplace, bespoke kitchens.

Stephen Connachan takes up the story: “The move was the first stage in a long-term plan to grow the business. We first invested in HOMAG equipment in 2007 and recently we’ve bought the woodCAD|CAM software and are using it with several HOMAG machines including the BHX 500.

“The machines we had prior to HOMAG coming on board just weren’t up to the demands our increased business was putting on them, they simply couldn’t keep up. We were experiencing more down time than anything else and that’s why we decided to move to HOMAG who offer the bigger, more powerful and reliable industrial machines. These models have had a significant impact on our business and now enable us to process millions of panels a year.”

Modernising and automating our processes “Before we moved into our new facility the system to cost

and quote jobs for customers was about a ten step process.

This often started with the customers giving us a verbal brief or a ‘back of a fag packet’ sketch of what they wanted.

“From this rough sketch we would have to draw up plans and turn them into a CAD model. If they liked the model we would then have to cost it out and, if the price was right, we would need to generate technical drawings for each of the panels before having to physically go down and programme the machines for each panel. As you can imagine, this involved a lot of human intervention resulting in not only a high work load, but also a great deal of time.

“Now, the software allows us to quickly create the CAD model concept to present to the customer; then, once the customer is happy with it, the software automatically programmes our machines for us. It performs the cutting list, and also allows us to print off barcode labels for each panel with information such as batch numbers. This enables us to process smaller batches through our factory.

“The main reason for us buying the BHX 500 and the software was to allow us to quote on more contract furniture work, but we also wanted to enter the batch size 1 market for bespoke kitchens.

“Previously our business model was large batch production; we were making anywhere from 50 to 500 cabinets of the same type. Today we can produce maybe 30-40 bespoke kitchens a week which was unthinkable before.

“With the software we’re able to put a barcode label on every panel we produce which enables us to follow each panel through the manufacturing process before collating them into kitchen carcasses further down the line. In the new facility we’ve set up three assembly stations where everything is flat packed and ready to assemble.”

Case Study Deciding on the best solution “Selecting the right partner for the software was a big, big decision for us, so we were mindful to carry out thorough due diligence before making the investment.

“We looked into most of the parametric based systems in the market place and profiled a variety of companies’ software to find out which would work best for our needs. After some serious soul searching, the solution that stood out was woodCAD|CAM. Coming from HOMAG we knew it would be good (after all, we’d had years of experience with them to back up our belief), and the fact that 99 per cent of our machinery is also HOMAG, it made sense for us to invest in its bespoke software solution.

“Before making the final decision we visited HOMAG UK and the HOMAG Treff in Germany to see the software in action.

Despite the fact that it was perhaps a larger investment than some other solutions, we bought the full package (bar one module) to give us the maximum benefits and flexibility for our production.

“The HOMAG woodCAD|CAM has enabled us to go from a ten step process down to a CAD model drawing which takes us minutes compared with hours previously. It then automatically programmes the machines, does all the barcode labelling, helps schedule the cutting lists and has reduced our quoting from days to hours.

“Looking ahead, our plan is to add more and more automation in the plant and this software is the enabler for us automating our production line. Over the next three years we’re looking to spend a considerable sum with HOMAG on more new machinery to help us achieve this goal.

“Naturally, we were tempted by cheaper options from their competition; however, we felt that keeping loyalty with the HOMAG brand would pay dividends in the long run. We were very confident that HOMAG would look after us better than if we bought the machinery from one company and the software from another. That would have given us a real headache trying to add more machines and tie it all together to make it work successfully. So the long-term strategy of sticking with HOMAG made sense to us.”

A reliable system delivering quality products “With HOMAG you have certainty in the quality of the panels you produce. Previously, with the level of human intervention, there were always high risks of mistakes. Once you’d completed all your technical sheets, you’d have to go and programme the machines and if an operator enters in

a measurement of 1225 instead of 1125, the programme wouldn’t work.

“With the woodCAD|CAM, you’re creating an article (a cabinet) and it automatically takes care of all the details, lining up all the holes etcetera, so the software’s actually doing all the programming of the machines for you. The result means we get the production right, first time, every time, and that is so beneficial to our business.

“As a consequence, the company is more efficient; it enables us to do more quotations whilst at the same time changing the aesthetics of our quotes, which not only look better, but they are also more informative for our customers.

“Of course, there’s a lot to learn with such a sophisticated piece of software, but as we understand it more we’re finding little nuggets that empower our processes. We’ve been able to develop new markets for our business since we invested in the software. Previously we weren’t able to economically produce bespoke kitchens, now we’re doing 30 or 40 kitchens a week thanks to woodCAD|CAM.” A solid recommendation “HOMAG machinery is, in our opinion, the best in the market place; it provides the very best quality results. The German parent company invest heavily in technology and when you buy HOMAG technology you know it is going to be at the forefront of the market for the next five or six year at least.

With competitors’ technologies they seem to be maybe two or three years behind.

“The other massive benefit with HOMAG is the machines’ reliability; they operate consistently with very little downtime compared to other brands we’ve had in the past. They really are almost bullet-proof,” concludes Stephen Connachan.

Installations 2018: another successful year for Kündig UK Ltd 2018 was yet another successful year for Kündig UK Ltd, with sales of both wide belt and edge sanders to satisfied customers. The company’s appearance at the W18 exhibition also proved popular, with many genuine enquiries to be followed up.

The edge sander range has proved particularly popular this year. One satisfied customer is Gary Tuddenham, managing director of Parabola Workshops Ltd, for whom “quality is everything”. Parabola works predominantly in the super yacht industry and residential homes. “Our work is bespoke, one offs: we very rarely do anything twice,” Gary said. “We can be working on a project for up to three to four months on a single item.” To maintain the high standards of quality, Gary invested in a ‘made to measure’ Kündig Uniq-S edge sander.

Gary chose Kündig “because of the build quality and the reputation. There are a couple of other manufacturers that do a similar machine but it wasn’t quite the same. For the accuracy we were looking at the sander had to be built correctly, with tiny tolerances. It had to be a rigid quality machine.

“It is very convenient. We have the edge sander in the hand workshop rather than the machine workshop. It is there when you need it, right next to the work benches.” While space was not an issue, Gary added, “It is a nice compact machine.”

Gary selected various options, including a grooved infeed platen to allow the sanding off of veneers that have been over laid after edging; a second transport belt to allow sanding of the ends of narrow panels; a two speed motor to allow finer grade abrasives to be used; a bobbin attachment allowing internal and external curves to be sanded; and a semi round table allowing the sanding of shapes using the rubber coated drive roller on the machine.

Asked if he would recommend the Uniq-S sander, Gary replied, “Yes, definitely. It does everything we expected it to do.” He added: “Carl [O’Meara of Kündig UK Ltd] is perfect: you can talk to him, no problem, and he will give you good advice.”

Doig Furniture, a manufacturer of luxury bespoke furniture and cabinetry for the high-end residential market, purchased a Kündig Uniq-S edge sander from Kündig agents Markfield Woodworking Machinery (MWM) late in 2017. Doig Furniture managing director, Duncan Doig, commented: “Kündig as a brand is the go-to for high end sanding equipment. Everybody is using the sander and everyone is pleased with it.”

The Kündig Uniq S has proved a significant time saver. “It has enabled us to carry out processes we were previously doing by handin a much quicker time frame,” says Duncan.

“It gives a consistent finish on every panel and is a much more efficient way of working. The machine is versatile, is double sided and tilts. We have some optional extras, and will probably add to them down the line.” Among the options selected Duncan identifies the power feed as something which drew him towards Kündig: “The machine was designed to do the process we were looking to do.” He may also add the bobbin sander attachment in the future, the advantage of which is it allows work on curves to be carried out. “We typically use the sander to edge sand boards or components in general. The main reason we bought the machine was the edge sanding capabilities. Equally, the reverse of the machine is an open belt sander, so we use that for shaping as well. The ability to shape is an added bonus, which you would expect from that kind of quality machine,” said Duncan.

The Kündig wide belt sanders, including both the Premium and Brilliant ranges, have also proved popular, especially at the W18 exhibition.

Demonstrations included the advantages of Kündig’s unique sanding method: “The part where we have a purposely damaged sanding belt and show the difference between traditional ‘straight line’ sanding which shows the defect as opposed to oblique sanding giving a perfect finish always amazes people, especially those that have a constant struggle with their existing straight line sanders,” says Kündig UK Ltd’s Carl O’Meara.

The Compton Cross formerly known as Molly Moggs, a legendary pub and cabaret venue in Soho, was refurbished by the new owners who wanted to retain its character while developing it into a more stylish cocktail bar.

Timber A Grand Statement In European Oak

James Latham, the UK’s biggest independent timber and panel product distributor, recently supplied 3m3 of European Oak for the construction of this spectacular double-curved staircase.

Creating a magnificent entry and focal point to the 6.5m wide hallway of a luxury new build residential property in East Yorkshire, the bespoke staircase was designed, manufactured and installed by Westcliffe Staircases of West Yorkshire.

Software Cabinet Vision Future-Proofs Jane Cheel Furniture

Less than a year after starting to use Cabinet Vision daily, a furniture manufacturer says the software quickly became an integral and vital part of their design process by saving a considerable amount of time and effort, and will play a big role in their future growth plans.

Before commissioning Cabinet Vision, all Jane Cheel Furniture’s drawings were done with 2D CAD. “Every single line had to be drawn manually, which was extremely timeconsuming,” says CAD draughtsman Robert Nagy, who was hired by the company in April 2018 because of his extensive knowledge of the software.

“Jane Cheel recognised Cabinet Vision’s potential for growing the company through speeding up the process, meaning we have faster turnaround times and can take on more work.

And we now include fully photo-rendered images with all plans, drawings and elevations that go to customers.”

He says customers are pleasantly surprised when they see the rendered images showing what the furniture in their rooms will look like, with real colours, and even scenes through windows. “It’s so realistic that it’s turning into a good sales tool for us.”

Working mainly with timbers such as Oak and Walnut, along with veneered MDF boards and plywood, the five-year-old company currently cuts all its components with beam saws and manual drilling. But he says they are likely to invest in CNC machinery in the future, using Cabinet Vision’s powerful Screen-To-Machine module to generate NC code to program it.

While full kitchen kitouts are their core business, they also manufacture some bathroom and living room furniture, along with dressing rooms, wardrobes and tables. “We now use Cabinet Vision for designing everything, including table components,” he says.

Robert Nagy explains how creating cutlists fits into his daily routine with Cabinet Vision. “When I start working with the software on a new project, my first task is to ascertain what material we’re going to use, and ensure it’s in our Cabinet Vision material library. Then I check the cabinet sizes and texture required, before going into the modelling area and designing the individual pieces of furniture and the full room. It’s so beneficial simply being able to drag and drop similar sized cabinets into the job from the library, and parametrically edit them to the right size.

“I generate cutlists via the Report Centre. They’ve been set up to suit our specific needs, so it’s now just a case of clicking a button and printing them. Previously, we had to prepare cutlists manually, by calculating the size and quantity of each of those individual parts.”

It also helps them estimate the amount of material they need to order for the job. “Overall, Cabinet Vision has made an impact on how we work at the moment in terms of speeding up our processes, meaning we’ve been able to take on new clients. And we’re already looking at how it can help in the future...not only with generating NC code when we invest in CNC machine tools, but I’m considering putting our prices into Cabinet Vision to create estimates and quotations with it.”

Robert Nagy is one of three employees working directly with Cabinet Vision Ultimate, but as well as using it for design, he is also responsible for maintaining the cabinet and material libraries.

Concluding he says the gulf between 2D systems and Cabinet Vision can be likened to a notebook. “2D CAD is one page in the notebook. Cabinet Vision is the whole notebook.”

As well as design, Cabinet Vision also produces essential cutlists for the shopfloor. “This is another big time-saver for us, as most full kitchen fitouts comprise between 30 and 40 separate pieces of furniture. And taking everything into account – sides, tops, bases, backs, shelves, and doors – the

Case Study A Felder Fan For 20 Years Peter Sefton runs the Peter Sefton Furniture School, which offers a wide range of woodworking and furniture making courses. The main course is 35 weeks long and covers hand skills, machining and a lot more, they also offer specialist short courses and three day machining courses on using bandsaws, planer thicknessers, table saws and spindle moulders all carried out on a range of machinery from the FELDER GROUP. For the last 15 years Peter has been using machines from the FELDER GROUP and is still using three of his original machines today. When he first started the school Peter purchased an A3-41 planer thicknesser, an N4400 bandsaw, an F3 spindle moulder and a K3 panel saw from FELDER’s Hammer range since then he has added two AF 22 dust extraction units, upgraded his K3 to a K700 Professional as well as adding a second planer - the A 741 from the FELDER range.

Commenting on why he chose machines form FELDER, Peter said, “I had known of FELDER for over 20 years and it’s great to see how they have progressed. I went to the Headquarters in Milton Keynes and it gives you a great confidence seeing their setup, and the range is safe which is essential when running a school.”

Speaking about his machines, Peter said, “The N4400 bandsaw is essential; it has so many uses. We swap the blade 2 or 3 times a day: A little narrow blade for tight curved work, a wider blade for ripping, a medium blade for making tenons and dovetails. As the school became more popular, a queue for the A3-41 started to develop so I decided to add another planer, taking the step up to the FELDER A 741. The quick change knives on both the planers are easy to set up; I can teach someone in 15 minutes and be confident that they could go back to their own workshop and set it up. Regarding his panel saw, Peter said, “The Hammer K3 did well and I had that for 12 years but we were ready for an upgrade. The bigger and more robust FELDER K 700 has allowed us to do such accurate work - fine cutting for inlays/veneers and a selection of different tasks that I can show the students, but most importantly is the increased safety.” Peter then went on to say, “I wouldn’t have a workshop without a spindle moulder. In the past, they have had a reputation for being dangerous but the technology has improved so much and now it is much safer - as long as it is set up correctly – and you can do some really nice work.”

Peter now makes DVDs and digital downloads on the each of the machines to spread his knowledge and experience and to keep people up to date with the safety regulations.

Dust Extraction DCS Filter Sits Comfortably In Long Eaton Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has designed and installed a complete dust extraction system for renowned Nottinghamshire-based furniture manufacturer, Andrew Paul Furniture Ltd. Andrew Paul Furniture is located at the heart of the UK’s furniture-manufacturing capital – Long Eaton – and the company’s directors bring together a combined experience of over 60 years in the industry to manufacture traditional, quality furniture with a contemporary twist. Situated between Nottingham and Derby, just north of the River Trent, Long Eaton was once a thriving industrial town, manufacturing much of the ‘Nottingham’ lace which was sold worldwide but, by the mid-1900s, the demand for lace had waned considerably.

Fortunately for the town’s workforce, this decline coincided with the rise of furniture and upholstery manufacturing in the town; an industry which has continued to thrive in Long Eaton to the point where it is recognised today as the centre for quality upholstery manufacture in the UK. More than 50 companies in the town are involved in furniture manufacture, employing over 2,700 people and generating sales in excess of £250 million through ‘high end’ retailers in the UK and around the world.

The statement ‘Made in Long Eaton’ means a great deal when it comes to fine furniture, and the ‘Union Jack Sofa’ logo may only be used by companies manufacturing within the town’s boundaries.

From the frames manufactured using FSC accredited timber, through to the finished upholstered piece, virtually every element of the furniture created at Andrew Paul is produced in-house and, when the directors took the decision to bring two separate manufacturing units under the same roof, they called DCS in to assess their dust extraction requirements.

As DCS’s Sales Manager, Ray Townley, explains: “The joinery and frame-building side of the business was already located in premises next to the new factory, but upholstery work was being completed in a separate building up the road.” Ray Townley carried out the free site survey and energy-efficiency appraisal that DCS always offer, and the proposed turnkey package included the supply and installation of an externally-sited, NFSZ3000 3HJLR screw filter unit to handle dust and waste from the company’s eclectic mix of classical saws and sanders, as well as a lathe, a thicknesser, and a surface planer. In total, extraction was required for 6 clean-up hoses and 19 different machines, including a new Schuko Hogger wood shredder, that DCS would also supply, which incorporates a magnetic trap at the outlet side to

The new system installed at Andrew Paul Furniture is enhanced by the inclusion of Ecogate® energy-saving technology. Two Ecogate® GreenBOX 12 units receive information on the operational status of each piece of equipment in the factory and, as machines are switched on and off, instruct a total of 21 Ecogate® automatic dampers to open or close according to the real-time demand for extraction. The system then automatically adjusts the speed of the 37kW extraction fan to optimise efficiency and maximise power savings. “The Ecogate® system is perfect for a joinery workshop such as this one,” says Ray Townley, “where multiple machines are required for the manufacturing process, but never required to be in operation at the same time.”

A conventional system would have the main fan and filter unit sized to accommodate the extraction requirement for all machines operating continuously throughout the working day. But, through analysis of machine usage, Kieran Redmond, Projects Engineer at DCS, determined the total maximum usage would only ever be around 85% of this total and, as Ray explains: “Ecogate technology takes advantage of this fact;

A rotary valve discharges collected waste, pressurefree, from the DCS filter unit and a 15kW transport fan directs the waste vertically into a cyclone separator; finally delivering the waste material efficiently and safely into the storage silo. DCS fitted heavy duty ductwork bends to enhance wear resistance, and return air ductwork is also included in the installation; manually-operated summer/winter dampers allow the filtered warm air to heat the workshop in winter, or divert it to atmosphere in summer.

Woodwaste New Wood Waste Heater For Furniture Manufacturer A North West bespoke furniture manufacturer has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to get the money-saving benefits of waste disposal and heating.

Rothwell & Thomas was established 34 years ago and supplies high quality custom-made furniture from its headquarters in Manchester.

Having already owned a wood waste heater, the company has already experienced the benefits, so when its current wood waste heater needed replacing it wasn’t a question of should they replace it, but just a question of what model they should replace it with.

Case Study Electric Power And 4-Way Is Best For Crown Imperial Since Crown Imperial was established as Crown Products in 1946, the company’s portfolio over the decades has included wooden toys, nursery furniture, contract furniture for the government and even ice cream advertising stands. The family run business now specialises in the manufacture of high quality British furniture for kitchens, bedrooms and living areas.

It has a large showroom with 6,000 products in Daventry, but its headquarters are in Herne Bay. This is where it has recently overhauled and enhanced handling procedures by bringing in a number of Combilift models to replace counterbalance and reach trucks that were previously used.

The wide variety of raw materials and the varying dimensions of finished products that need to be moved around and stored at the 10,000m² production facility required versatile equipment, and Store Manager Bruce Whiting was also keen to reduce the level of ride-on forklift traffic, particularly in areas where a lot of other personnel are present. Taking advice from Jon Collett of materials handling consultants Mexmast, he looked at the Combilift range and found the ideal solution in the form of CombiWR4 multidirectional pedestrian stackers and a Combi-CBE4 multidirectional counterbalance design forklift.

Crown Imperial is the first company in the UK to take delivery of the new 4t capacity electric powered Combi-CB – which ticked all the boxes for Bruce. “We wanted a truck with a small footprint that could work in narrow confines, but we also needed enough capacity to cope with our heavier loads.

Electric power was also essential for lower running costs, so we were pleased to hear that Combilift had recently added the CBE4 to its range.”

The CBE4 is used across the site for a wide range of tasks; offloading 6m long packs of timber, chipboard and MDF and taking them to racking, and handling long profiles and timber doors. It can also attach a tipping bin to the forks which is used to take chipping waste to the wood burner for recycling (which provides fuel for heating the facility).

The compact size of the truck coupled with its 4-way ability enables it to easily manoeuvre the tipper between machinery in the main hall without affecting production schedules.

The two Combi-WR4s, which have a capacity of 1,450kg, tend to work inside, although they are equally at home outside if required. They handle lighter loads such the long profiles, pallets of components such as drawer runners, as well as the large amount of cardboard that is used for packaging.

A major feature of all Combilift’s walk behind trucks is the unique patented multi-position tiller arm which enables push button rotation of the rear wheel parallel to the chassis and back. This offers excellent visibility of the surroundings, the forks and the load, and when working in narrow aisles it enables the operator to stand at the side of the unit rather than the rear, avoiding any crush risk. The lower speed of pedestrian machines compared to ride-on trucks also fits neatly with Crown Imperial’s requirement for ultra-safe operation, particularly when manouevering around corners or potential blind spots.

The versatility and 4-way capability of the Combilifts have enabled better use of storage space for long products and have also brought further benefits, as Bruce points out. “Thanks to the Combi-WR4’s manouevrability in the small aisles of the warehouse area we can put stock where we couldn’t previously and can now store all elements of a customer order in one place. With the old reach trucks we had to split orders and keep them in different locations. So it is now much quicker to locate a specific order, and if customers want to delay shipment there is no issue for us with lack of space.”

“Our previous handling suppliers were not overly helpful to be honest,” said Bruce, “so we were very open to Jon’s fresh take on our operation and impressed with his suggestions and Mexmast’s service which have improved efficiency.

He also recommended the blue spot safety light, which indicates the direction of travel of the Combi-CB to further reduce risks, as well as the Hoppecke trak® air rapid charging battery system, so we can top up quickly in a break if we think we’re going to need extra power. And the drivers/ operators love them – which is of course very important.”

Case study AXYZ Router Keeps Irish Eyes Smiling Installation of an AXYZ 6000 series CNC router at Dublin-based Assembly Craft has, according to the company’s founder and Managing Director, Clem Kelly, “led to a huge increase in production, faster turnaround on projects and an expanded customer base”. Established in 2004, Assembly Craft’s primary business is in the design and manufacture of bespoke furniture for the commercial and domestic sectors. This includes reception desks, counter and retail display units for the former and customised kitchens and bathrooms, wardrobes and shelving for the latter, all of which involve daily use of the AXYZ 6010 router supplied by AXYZ International.

The materials processed include both solid woods and particle woods such as medium-density fibreboard (MDF), high-pressure laminates (HPL), acrylic, ABS, aluminium sheet, aluminium composites (ACM) and foamed board. Responsible for project management at Assembly Craft, Marcus O’Shea commented: “The AXYZ router has surpassed all our expectations by dramatically increasing production levels and allowing diversification into new markets. It has also enabled us to offer a turnkey CNC routing/cutting service to other companies, thereby creating a valuable additional revenue stream.”

The AXYZ 6010 router installed has a processing area of 3048 (length) x 2159mm (width). It also incorporates the AXYZ Automatic Tool Change (ATC) facility for work involving multiple tools. The router is supported by VCarve design and production software developed

by Vectric which Marcus O’Shea described as “the

best and most user-friendly software program the company has ever used, offering multiple tooling and both 2D and 3D machining options.” Robert Marshall, AXYZ International Vice President (Market Development) stated that “whilst AXYZ always respected the preference of customers, VCarve would be recommended to those customers seeking advice on the most appropriate software.” Significantly, it is now supplied as standard on all AXYZ routers as part of the purchasing/service package.

As with all AXYZ routers, the 6000 series can be supplied with a range of optional machining enhancements. These include the AXYZ Zone Management facility that provides optimum material hold-down efficiency, the advanced A2MC machine controller and integrated AVS (AXYZ Vision System) for perfect routing/cutting accuracy and the latest helical rack and pinion drive system. What’s New New 305mm Slide Compound Mitre Saw Joins The Makita Range Of Saws The new LS1219 305mm Slide Compound Mitre Saw joins the family of Makita saws that benefit from the new design of the sliding motor head layout allowing it to be operated close to a wall making it ideal for bench mounted applications.

to dampen vibration and be super quiet to enhance the work environment. This also improves both durability and reliability of the saw blade and equipment. A lower vibrating blade produces greater cut accuracy, and also reduces wobble, giving a beautifully cut surface.

The twin slide rails are set at an angle in the rigid aluminium alloy chassis frame, while the rear chassis fixing is positioned right at the rear of the saw assembly. The robust rails allow the saw head to move forward to cover the total sawing zone without the wasted movement of the motor head passing back behind the sawing zone.

The robust aluminium alloy main bed is fully machined for accuracy giving a large turning base. The rear fence has adjustable material locks and side holders to support a wide workpiece. The new LS1219 can also be connected to a dust extractor for operator safety.

The electronic controls feature soft start for machine and operator safety; constant speed control; electric brake; double insulation and a laser marker system on the LS1219L model. 110v and 240v versions of this new mitre saw are available.

The new LS1219 mitre saw has a no load speed of 3,200rpm and features a bigger mitre and bevel range than its predecessor the LS1216. This new mitre saw has class leading mitre and bevel capacities – 60° L to 60° R mitre, and 48° L to 48° R bevel. A front knob enables easy bevel adjustment with easy-to-operate mitre angle lock and one-touch sliding head lock.
