Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Playground Construction - Teraja It is with delight that I report to the school community that the construction of two playground structures in Teraja are underway. The areas are barricaded, with HSSE supervisors on site at all times.

Children have been briefed of the work in progress, as have contractors been briefed about school operations and safeguarding children when on site. Most of the work will take place outside of school hours, with very minimal and low risk form work taking place during some class times. Look out for the big unveiling, due in the coming weeks.

Safer Internet Day Tuesday 5th February marked the annual, global Safer Internet Day awareness campaign. This year's theme: Together for a better internet, has been supported by a range of high profile groups, including The United Nations.

At Panaga School, Digital Education (DE) lessons are conducted formally from P1 all the way through to M2. Internet safety is an integral component of all teaching and learning. Currently, this topic is at a Panaga School Weekly editor: higher profile in line with Safer Internet Day, with assembly information Damian Brady sessions and specific topics about the workings and associated risks of damianbrady@panagaschool.com the internet.

Our children are digital natives, growing up in a very different world to that of their digital immigrant parents. I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr Damian and Mr Neil for their ongoing teaching and learning of this important topic. I also encourage parents to take the time to ask your children what is meant by a safer internet and what are the associated risks they need to be aware of. This will help you understand the learning that is taking place for your child about this topic and reinforce these important internet safety messages.

Updates from the Principal’s Desk Adopt-A-Beach The Last Straw Committee has reached out to Panaga School to ask if we would like to adopt stretches of beach in front of the Padang and Rampayoh. Initial consultation with teachers, students and a small group of parents have indicated strong support for such involvement.

A concept being explored is to have students once a term attend to the beach (weather permitting with all risk assessments, consent and safety briefings in place) during their After School Activities (ASAs).

Further parent consultation will take place on Friday 1st March at our next Parent Representative Meeting. If you have an opinion about Panaga School's Adopt-A-Beach involvement, please contact a member of the school’s leadership team, or discuss this with your child’s class’s Parent Representative in readiness for our next meeting.

For those interested in getting involved in Adopt-A-Beach sooner rather than later, there will be a launch event from 5.30pm until 6.30pm on Wednesday 13th February, down at the Panaga Beach Shelter.

Mr Mark (new Head Teacher) - update Mr Mark Walters and his family are now in Brunei. Chinese New Year fun for all in Mendaram Mendaram celebrated Chinese New Year with a variety of traditional activities, with many children and adults wearing red for luck.

The children had a go at‌dumpling making from play dough, cherry blossom painting, lantern making, adding scales to the dragons and watching lions and dragons dancing on their way back from an assembly for the older children.

Story time was about the festival and how people celebrate it all around the world. The children had a chance to listen to the story of the Jade Emperor’s animal race and find out how the years got their animal names.

As mentioned by Miss Cindy, all are welcome to come and join us for The Last Straw’s Adopt-A-Beach launch event on Wednesday 13th February, from 4,30pm.

The school, along with many other community groups, will be adopting different sections of the beach to help keep them clean.

The event will kick of with a 30 minute beach clean, so remember to bring hats, sunscreen and bug spray.

Panaga School, in collaboration with The Last Straw, presents...

We want you to create a piece of art from waste.

You need to: create artwork using clean litter – it can be flat or a sculpture in 3D. Make sure it is self-contained and safe to be left standing up.

All winning pieces will be displayed at various locations throughout the Panaga Community.

Please include the following on all artwork: 1. Name; 2. Age/class; 3. Explain what you used and why (e.g. a sculpture built using 20 yoghurt pots – A Week of Yoghurt – the number of plastic pots one family gets through in a week).

P5 and the Inventions That Changed the World Last week, Miss Gonnie visited P5 as a part of our IPC topic, Inventions That Changed the World.

She talked to us about medical inventions such as x-rays, as well as lifesaving discoveries like penicillin and insulin.

Did you know that before anesthetic was invented, patients had to bite on a piece of wood during surgery? OUCH!!

The plight of the Helmeted Hornbill The Helmeted Hornbill is the rarest Hornbill in Brunei and is a critically endangered species. This Hornbill is bizarre looking as it has a huge bill with a red casque on top. It also has a big patch of featherless skin on its neck. In the female, this patch is light blue to greenish, and in the male, it is red. The casque is so big that it looks like the head is bald.

The juvenile is all brown including the beak and it does not have a casque. It is a frugivore, as it mainly eats fruits, especially figs, but it also eats animals like small mammals, birds, insects and reptiles.

Unfortunately, there is a great demand for the bird’s red casque, which is used to make ornaments and jewellery. This is the reason why this bird is critically endangered.

In Spanish, M1 have been learning about animals and adjectives. This is quite tricky as the adjective has to agree with the noun it is describing. At the end of the first unit, the students learned about Spanish endangered animals. To follow up from this, they were asked to produce a set of cards about the animals of Borneo. This was a great activity to revise verbs, nouns and adjectives. The students thoroughly enjoyed this and produced fantastic cards with wonderful information. Some even added extra information, such as the status of the animal. (These cards have not been corrected.) More cards to follow next week. Well done to all!

Panaga School Weekly, Issue Fifteen, 8th February 2019 MY2, have been studying the works of

BANKSY,

an anonymous England-based graffiti artist. His street art combines dark humour and social commentary, using a distinctive stencil-based graffiti technique.

The students have used his work to help them to develop their own thought-provoking stenciled graffiti, linking to the Sustainable Development Goals and highlighting the need for change in the world.
