Messages from Panaga School Senior Leadership Team Dear Panaga School Community, The world keeps throwing many different challenges to all of us, with opportunities to check just how adaptable we can be. Following last Friday’s news of returning to remote learning for all year groups, we wait for further guidance on the progress of Brunei’s National COVID-19 Recovery program. While we await such news, our school community continues to focus on what we can do together to improve learning to the best of our capabilities. This past fortnight has presented wonderful learning opportunities for everyone.

Mendaram Updates It was fabulous to have our Mendaram students back on site in recent weeks.

Many of our young children had never physically attended Panaga School before, so the weeks that were available to them were valuable for teaching and learning and provided the opportunity for relationship development. With our return to remote learning this week, live sessions for our younger students are once again providing opportunities to build connections with familiar adults and peers, as we again adapt to this online forum. We extend thanks to our teachers and parent community for your support and adaptability to manage this unexpected return to remote classes.

Rampayoh Updates Live classes and work uploaded to Seesaw demonstrates the commitment from parents and staff to nurturing, supporting and educating every child. As a result, the motivation of our students is good with high levels of engagement in learning.

In P1, the children are exploring their new IEYC unit, ‘Ocean Treasures’. They have listened to the story, Rainbow Fish, and created some amazing fish drawings of their own through Drawing Club. They are sharing their knowledge and curiosity through their See, Think and Wonder sentences, writing about the ocean and animals living in it. The highlights of learning this week for P2s were creating wishing tales in Literacy; and for the P3s - developing their division skills in Maths. The children have been creating their own digital compositions in Music, working on their strength and stamina in PE, and in DE, children were exploring artificial intelligence in drawing programs. The range of learning provided never ceases to amaze and our children are truly lucky to have such dedicated and talented teachers.

Teraja Updates In Teraja, teaching teams have extended learning opportunities to include the outdoors. Mr Nathan created an exciting orienteering challenge, which has now been completed at all levels, by all classes. By solving simple Maths problems, the children were able to work out which houses they needed to visit to locate the orienteering markers to find a letter of the alphabet. Once all letters had been located, they had to unscramble the letters to make a word that fitted the final clue. There were lots of different skills involved including map reading and marking out an efficient route to collect the letters. It was a challenging but fun learning task that the students enjoyed. Since learning outdoors has been such a success with our students, this week, P6 and P7 kicked off their learning about International Women's Day with another outdoor learning task. The students were encouraged to cycle around camp to search for information on 13 inspirational women who achieved amazing things in challenging times. It certainly is lovely to see the students riding around, engaging in their learning with enthusiasm. It has been wonderful to see how the whole community (teachers, parents and students) continue to come together to motivate and support learning.

Messages from Panaga School Senior Leadership Team Melilas Updates Most Melilas students were very fortunate to be able return to school for the majority of this term. We also continued significant elements of online support and were well-prepared for what had to be, once more, a smooth return to remote learning following the recent Ministry announcement on school closures. A key feature of our learning included an International Women's Day (IWD) focus, building on last year’s success and building IWD 2022 learning opportunities online.

This included learning on gender bias, women trailblazers, history of women’s rights, speech writing and declarations, as well as looking at Brunei female figures of influence. We even had some sophisticated discussions on equality of opportunity and equality of outcome and what the true nature of gender equality means! Great learning linking to our Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No.5 focus this week: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

In this edition of Panaga School Biweekly and on our Melilas IWD Padlet, it’s easy to witness how consciously aware and supportive our students are of this year’s theme, “Break the Bias”.

The children created ‘Thank you’ cards with finger print art to send to the front line workers at KB Hospital to give thanks for all they are doing in Brunei’s fight against COVID-19.

The Nursery children celebrated Brunei National Day by talking about Brunei, dressing up in the Brunei flag colours, playing traditional games and waving flags.

SCHOOLING IN A PANDEMIC

By Ireoluwa (P6S) It was a morning in March 2020. Dad came into my room to announce, “Ire, from now on, you will be doing school on a computer.”

“What do you mean, Dad?” I asked.

“Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, you will not be going to school.”

I felt paralysed by this news because I had never experienced this in my life.

For the last two years, children all over the world have had to make changes to how they learn. This has come with a lot of mixed feelings, views and emotions. Speaking to my cousins, friends and classmates around the world, I have made a list of the advantages and disadvantages of home schooling.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF HOME SCHOOLING

DISADVANTAGES

When you’re running late, you can get to ‘school’ faster.

It is boring because you can’t interact with people in person.

You get to spend more time with family.

Its harder to make new friends.

You can pick your snack or lunch since you have many options at home.

There are internet problems once in a while and you can miss classes.

You don’t really have to ask to go to the toilet.

If you have a younger sibling they could sometimes be annoying.

If you need school materials, you may have it handy at home.

There are many distractions.

You can switch up your work station frequently.

There is less physical activity.

You become more independent on the use of the computer.

Exposed to a lot of distractions on the internet.

About the cadet journalist: Ireoluwa is in P6S at Panaga School, Brunei.

Her hobbies are art and swimming.

She aspires to be an author.

P6 have been learning about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) as part of our International learning. We learned all about the 17 goals, and for our Exit Point, we are going to think about one action that we can take to work towards these goals.

P6 boys unite for International Women's Day A group of P6 boys joined together for International Women's Day this week.

They completed the cycle around camp, finding and learning about famous inspirational women.

Peder, Carl's dad, read them stories about Virginia Hall (a WW2 spy), Sofia Lonescu (a Romanian neurosurgeon, born in 1920) and JK Rowling (famous author).

Finally, they baked cakes for the inspirational and strong women in their families.

What great learning! Thank you to the teachers who organised this fun day of learning.

Dear Melilas Community, After our long-awaited, although temporary return to face to face classes, for students who were able to, we have had to take our learning back online once more. Your children have been amazing at handling this unexpected transition, as have our wonderful Melilas team of teachers and, indeed yourselves, for your ongoing resilience and adaptability.

One of the testaments to this is the success of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2022, which we celebrated this week. Despite best-laid plans, we were treated to some amazing online work from our young gender equality activists.

We are all now certainly more informed on aspects of gender equality and Breaking the bias, this year’s campaign theme. Some of the most sophisticated discussions that I’ve had with young adults occurred this week on themes of equal opportunity, to what extent are gender differences and similarities important in gender equality and what a true meritocracy means.

Absolutely superb research, discussion, thinking and learning on this subject, linking closely to our Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No.5 focus this week: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

The structure and function of body systems: Level of organisation

World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and shared reading.

Created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995, it is now marked in over 100 countries around the globe.

This year, World Book Day fell on 3rd March 2022 in the UK. The message this year is ‘You Are a Reader’. Panaga School recognised World Book Day in assemblies last week for P2-M2 and our Pre-Nursery and Nursery classes recognised it with a dress up day. We will officially celebrate on 22nd April as a whole school, with a book character dress up day and vocabulary parade. Start thinking now… who will you dress up as and what word will you use to describe your character?

Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or income.

Have fun sharing books with these tips: • Talk about the book’s cover and point out the title.

• Let your child hold the book and turn the pages.

• Encourage them to talk about the pictures.

• Use different voices for different characters. Add in sound effects like splashing in puddles, beeping car horns or animal sounds.

• When the story is finished, you could ask them if they liked it and if they had a favourite character.

• Make a den together, like a cloth over a table, with space for both of you to share. You can make your den part of the story – it could be a monster’s cave, a rocket ship, or a princess’s tower.

• Talk to your child about what you did as a child. Involve the whole family – grandparents may have stories to share from when they were growing up!

Spending just ten minutes every day enjoying books together can make a BIG difference to children’s development. Sharing stories boosts creativity, imagination and improves wellbeing.
