Dear Panaga School Community, Book Week What a sensational week of learning that focused on the power of Literacy, through Book Week. Tremendous thanks to Miss Donna and Miss Suzanne. These ladies have worked together for months to build a programme that has really brought books to life, igniting a further love of learning for all.

The week began with a character dress up, for children and adults, with fashion parades across the whole school. A favourite moment of the week for me was the excitement of our P2 students who came face to face with a very real and charismatic Paper Bag Princess, their current story in class. Can you imagine being 6 years of age and witnessing an actual character from a book come to life and read to you that very same story?

International Mindedness As we continue along our journey towards International Primary Curriculum (IPC) reaccreditation and International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) accreditation, it is crucial that we develop a shared understanding of International Mindedness.

Parents have kindly offered feedback in recent years that some of the language used in teaching and learning for their child causes confusion. For example, some learning experiences may refer to one’s “home country”. What is a “home country” to a child who has spent all of their existence living internationally, has parents from two very different countries and a passport that is representative of neither country that the parents identify with as their “home”? A complex situation for sure, that requires us to define International Mindedness in a way that takes into account the needs of all of our learners.

Fieldwork Education, who are the company behind the IPC have created the following definition: International Mindedness begins with exploring learners’ sense of “self” and then developing their consideration of the “other”. In teaching such concepts, the learner needs to develop their understanding of “home”, “host”, “heritage” and “adopted” countries.

Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk Dear Parents of Panaga, What a wonderful week within the school community. The importance of reading and books have been so vitalised within the school this week. Thank you to all of the people who have worked so hard in preparing this. In particular, as mentioned by Miss Cindy, the incredible work of Miss Wally (Donna) and Miss Gerald (Suzanne).

The week started with a wonderful dress up day and from the youngest to the oldest children - and adults! - all were fully involved. Although, I am still being given puzzled looks and asked if my ears are ok now from lots of children.

Throughout the week, the children have enjoyed reading stories and hearing stories. A highlight for me was observing the P7 children coming onto the Mendaram and Rampayoh sites to read with our younger children. I am not sure who enjoyed the visits more - the children or the P7 teachers - Can I please remind parents of the need for safety awareness during drop off and pick who did seem very reluctant to leave. up times within the school.

The children also thoroughly enjoyed the visiting author, Clive Piggott, who was able to captivate the children across the school. Listening to an actual storyteller is so motivating for the children.

This week, a number of children have been observed being driven in and out of school without seatbelts being buckled up. There has also been a number of cars identified as speeding within the Rampayoh car park.

As a school, we do promote road safety and awareness with the children. Please do take the time to ensure this is also developed at home.

P1 love the Nursery Sensory Room too!

It was lovely to have the P1 pupils down to visit Nursery during Book Week. It was a great opportunity for P1 to visit the Sensory Room, and have a shared experience with some of the Nursery pupils. They particularly enjoyed the ball pit, sensory walk and lights!

P4 learn a lot on their visit to Chung Ching Middle School (CCMS) On Thursday 5th September, P4 children visited CCMS in Seria, with some of the residents from the old people’s home we support, for a cultural afternoon.

We learned about Chinese culture including Chinese New Year, the Moon Cat Festival and much more.

The children from CCMS shared their culture with us through song, dance, videos, food and games.

The P4 children sang two songs from The Lion King.

Children from CCMS were assigned a small group of P4 children to look after.

They were friendly, fun and helpful.

Learning about Learning In P6, we learned that our brain is filled with neurons and they help us learn.

When we learn something new, our neurons connect with each other and when we practise, the connections between these neurons become stronger.

Book Week Melilas style A competition was held to decorate all the doors in the Melilas area with images from favourite books.

The winners were chosen and in true Melilas style the students worked in teams to create the final masterpieces.

Everyone got into the ‘Book Week� mood on Monday by dressing up as their favourite book character.

If you have paid for last year’s Yearbook but are yet to receive it, please collect your book(s) from the office you paid and have your name ticked off.

If you have not purchased a Yearbook yet and would like to, there are a limited number of copies for sale for $14 from either school office.
