TAMSIN HARRIS SCHOOL PRINCIPAL 6 / Panaga School
About the School Panaga School, located in the peaceful country of Brunei Darussalam, is nestled on the coast overlooking the South China Sea. Our school is spread across two campuses—Mendaram&Rampayoh (Early Years to Year 2) and Teraja&Melilas (Years 3–8)—and operates across four separate buildings designed to support engaging, child-centred learning. Originally established in 1948 to serve the families of Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) employees, Panaga School has grown into a diverse and dynamic international learning community. In 2024, the school entered a new chapter and is now operated by Jerudong International School (JIS) Brunei, one of the region’s most respected educational institutions. Today, over 35 different nationalities learn together at Panaga School, creating a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and global perspectives. Our curriculum is a thoughtfully adapted version of the UK National Curriculum, shaped to meet the needs of our internationally diverse student body. Inquiry-based learning, holistic development, and strong values lie at the heart of our approach.
We actively seek out and recruit education professionals who are highly qualified, dedicated, and committed to their work. Panaga teachers bring a wealth of international experience and a passion for nurturing learning in a caring and supportive community. Our staff work closely together to create a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment where children feel valued and empowered. Our values—respect, resilience, responsibility, and reflection—guide all aspects of school life. As part of the wider JIS family, we benefit from collaborative opportunities, shared expertise, and a collective commitment to excellence in education, while continuing to honour the unique Panaga identity and its deep community roots. What truly sets Panaga School apart is its strong sense of belonging and community. Whether it’s through parent partnerships, local connections, or vibrant school events, our relationships are built on trust, shared purpose, and mutual respect. As you begin your journey with us, you’re not just joining a school—you’re becoming part of a story that spans generations, cultures, and a shared vision for the future. We’re delighted to welcome you and excited for the positive impact you’ll have on our community. Panaga School is a leading member of the Federation of British Schools in Asia (FOBISIA).
Panaga School’s Mission and Vision is - "Together, Improving Learning". Student learning and progress on all levels is central to all that we do. This message is conveyed through an image of a whale silhouetted with animals, that represent the personal qualities. Our community is transient in nature, therefore the clear message of "Together, Improving Learning" helps all easily understand our mission. In addition, Panaga School's mission expands into our definitions of International Mindedness - "You, Me, Our Community", as well as our definition of Learning "Together Getting Better".

Living in Brunei
Brunei Darussalam is a relatively small country located on the northern shore of the island of Borneo, which it shares with parts of Malaysia and Indonesia. A safe, stable and secure country governed by the longest serving family monarchy in the world, there are no typhoons, earthquakes, or severe flooding to contend with. The climate is warm, stable and constant without the extremes of heat that are common in some parts of the world. Rainfall is typically heavy and brief. With rain brings unspoiled natural rainforests with an abundance of untamed wilderness coupled with some beautiful iconic, white sandy beaches.

AVERAGE COSTS IN BRUNEI The pace of life is much slower and more relaxed than in many Western countries. Though this can take newcomers some time to get used to, most people find that it soon becomes addictive and much more pleasant than the hustle and bustle of some other places. The people of Brunei Darussalam are welcoming of expatriates and very friendly.

From our Staff I moved to Brunei with my wife in 2022 after the COVID-19 disruption, and we have never looked back. It was a much easier transition than we anticipated, mainly due to the level of support from colleagues within the school. We were assigned a buddy whom we could contact for advice when required. Still, we found this unnecessary due to the large expat population, who are always ready to help, along with the friendly Bruneians. Panaga School is a unique environment to work in, and the most striking factors are the broad international population and the happiness displayed by the children here. Professionally, Brunei has been a land of opportunities for me. Collaborating with Jerudong International School, which recently began overseeing the operation of Panaga School, has opened many doors for my professional development. In my first two years here, I completed a Master's degree in education online. I am now looking towards completing an NPQ, and we have had the time to explore Asia and take up golf. The tropical climate allows for outdoor activities year-round, and we've had some amazing experiences as nature and outdoor enthusiasts on the island of Borneo. Based on our experience, I can confidently recommend Brunei as a place to live and work. The balance we've achieved here, between our professional and personal lives, surpasses any we've experienced elsewhere.
Stephen Coates Teacher of Science
I have worked in the Early Years at Panaga School for 12 years now. I came here in 2006 with my husband and 2 children. So what does being a Panaga teacher mean to me? It means teaching children who are excited and eager to learn and alongside this comes supportive families who are willing to support their children's learning. It means working with and alongside super friendly, professional and dedicated colleagues. It means having opportunities to develop yourself professionally. It means having the most amazing working environment surrounded by jungle, being close to the ocean and seeing monkeys and hornbills on a daily basis. It means having opportunities to travel all over South East Asia and beyond. In short, 12 years later, I still love being a Panaga teacher!
