MŌDÜRNE funktional design BY J BUCKIEWICZ O FFI CI AL SH OW July 29 - August 20 NW Natural Street of Dreams® StreetOfDreamsPDX.com October 13 - 15 Homes of Tomorrow Today Tour presented by PGE HomesOfTomorrowPDX.com
Undertaking a landscaping or outdoor living project can be a daunting task. Beyond choosing plants, understanding what they need to thrive once planted, installing hard surfaces or laying gravel, and staying on top of weeds and general yard cleanup, you also need a vision to create a cohesive, visually appealing space.
This year’s Portland Spring Home & Garden Show feature garden, Branching Out: Inside the Box Urban Landscape designed by Modurne Funktional Designs and supplied by Pomarius Nursery draws on the idea of creating a spectacular garden and outdoor living space when space itself may be limited. Being limited by the con nes of a small yard, terrace, or even urban living balcony space does not mean you’re unable to create your own outdoor oasis. Using benches, planter boxes and pots, outdoor furniture and water features, Branching Out showcases elements anyone can draw inspiration from to create a modern, functional space no
matter how big or small an outdoor area may be. Located in NW Portland, Pomarius Nursery combines plants and design, offering an array of boxwood, witty topiary shrubs, textural plants, Northwest native plants, succulents and perennials, presented in groupings with architectural objects to help inspire design ideas and possibilities in your own garden. Designer Jamie Buckiewicz of Modurne Funktional Designs has been in the interior design industry for over 35 years, with expertise spanning from color consultation and space planning to larger project management of remodels and new construction.
Beyond the feature garden, nd inspiration for garden and outdoor living spaces throughout the spring show through other garden installations, outdoor living experts, and plant sellers. Stroll through gardens designed by Blessing Landscapes, Merten & Sons Landscaping, and
Tree Line Hardscapes & Exteriors to get ideas and meet the professionals who can help you design and implement your outdoor living dreams. Visit Sunset Outdoor Living to see the latest trends in outdoor kitchens, replaces and more. Western Interlock provides paving stones and retaining wall systems made for the Northwest, and has a wealth of knowledge for aspiring DIY-ers who may want to embark on their own hardscaping projects.
Plant societies provide a wealth of knowledge for speci c varieties – from roses to peonies to fuchsias –ensure your blossoms thrive throughout the growing season. Shop a variety of plants in one place at the Home & Garden Show, or even explore options for adding an outdoor of ce or tiny home guest suite to your backyard! No matter your vision or budget, look for the right expert to help you do the legwork or provide the expertise needed to transform your outdoor space into a serene hideaway.
For more tips on how to prepare your garden and plants throughout the year, we suggest resources like the OSU Extension Service which publishes monthly garden calendars to build your gardening to-do lists.
• Plan any landscaping goals for the year. Bring your inspiration photos or ideas to local nurseries or connect with a landscape designer at the Portland Spring Home & Garden Show to ask for advice.
• Remove debris and maintain weeds throughout your garden beds and yard before they seed.
• Prepare raised garden beds for planting by pulling weeds and incorporating organic materials such as compost. Consider planting cooler-weather vegetables like broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbages, or carrots.
• Prune fruit trees and berries, summer blooming shrubs, and vining ornamentals.
• Evaluate your plants for any pest-related issues that may need to be addressed.
This year the NW Natural Street of Dreams® will be held in Sherwood, Oregon’s Denali Summit! The site will feature stunning million-dollar homes with Mt. Hood views at the gateway to Oregon’s wine country.
