his is our biggest and most eagerly awaited issue of the year, our Best Of Fauquier results. I’d like to say thank you to all who participated in the voting, and congratulations to all the winners. But Best of Fauquier only scratches the surface of the wealth of businesses in our community. Often, the votes are so close, and we wish we could recognize everyone who makes this such a business friendly community because there are so many special places here. Some businesses win their categories year after year, and we support these longtime businesses who have gained such popularity through years of excellent service to the community. Sometimes, though, there is a new winner, either a new business in town, or a longtime business that wins for the first time, and we love those surprises too. Read on and enjoy...

Marta von Dettingen PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS. WHAT PRODUCTS OR SERVICES DOES IT PROVIDE? Some 18 years back we opened the store in the historic building at 58 Main Street. Melissa Findley, a certified jeweler, helped me with stocking my showcases from several vendors. She also introduced me to jewelry appraiser Martin Fuller of Martin Fuller Appraisals, who came for our three day opening and was instrumental in educating and engaging the many customers who visited us those first few days. In addition to unique, one-of-akind jewelry pieces, we also sell European chocolates. WERE YOU SURPRISED BY YOUR BEST OF WIN? WHY OR WHY NOT? HAVE YOU WON IN PAST YEARS? I was surprised and jumped for joy! WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE REASON OUR READERS LOVE YOUR BUSINESS ENOUGH TO VOTE IT BEST OF? Customers find one of a kind pieces displayed in the windows or in the

store showcases, about half new pieces and half estate jewelry. I select each piece carefully; if I like it, I can help others appreciate its beauty. Because of that, we have had many loyal customers looking for, and finding, that unique piece they’ve been searching for. We promote vintage pieces, as well as pieces from jewelers such as Tiffany and Lalaounis.

came to us, and we were able to find their appliance, or a suitable option, for them. Our business is appliances, and it is what we do every day. Box stores cannot compete with our knowledge, our showroom, and ease of doing business. We are very fortunate to have a strong team of employees that we continue to build upon. TELL US WHY YOU ENJOY DOING BUSINESS IN FAUQUIER COUNTY AND HOW LONG YOUR BUSINESS HAS BEEN LOCATED HERE.

PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS. WHAT PRODUCTS OR SERVICES DOES IT PROVIDE? Tolson’s has been a familyowned business since its inception in the late 1800s. It started out as a country general store. In 1946, Tolson’s began selling Frigidaire appliances and that is where it all began. In the late 1980s, my father purchased Tolson’s after retiring from the military. He enjoyed the challenges of owning a small business and had a passion for working with the community. It was always his and my mother’s dream to pass something on to my sister and I. After he passed in 1996, my mother took over and ran the business through 2008. I ran the business as a passive owner until mid-2019 when I retired from Abbott Laboratories. During that time, we had many ups and downs. In addition to the everyday challenges of a small business, COVID hit and threw a curveball at us. We downsized and paused our service operations. We focused on providing an optimum sales experience for the customer. We found ways to supply appliances when the box stores couldn’t. We also have a sister company,

WHY OR WHY NOT? HAVE YOU WON IN PAST YEARS? We were totally surprised by winning. It isn’t necessarily a category that you think about for appliances. Our mission is “To exceed our customers’ expectations by providing exceptional products, unparalleled customer satisfaction, and the highest quality service.” And even though we are not providing service full time, it is something that we are striving to get back to in the near future. We want the experience to be the same for every customer whether they are buying entry level products or high-end products. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE REASON READERS LOVE YOUR BUSINESS ENOUGH TO VOTE IT BEST OF? We had many frustrated new customers that had been to a box store, were promised an appliance, and then got nothing or it was delayed forever. They

Selling a product like an appliance gives us a unique opportunity to get to know people. Many times a person comes in and looks at different things and then they bring their spouse in for the final decision. Sometimes, we get to meet the whole family. Buying an appliance is more than just a transaction for us. We develop lifelong friends and customers. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE READERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS, ANY FUTURE PLANS, ACTIVITIES YOU'RE SUPPORTING IN THE COMMUNITY, ETC.? We are honored and humbled by our customers’ vote of confidence. We know we are far from being perfect, and we will continue to strive to meet our mission statement for every customer. Future plans include rebuilding our service department with qualified trained service technicians. We have several strong candidates in the works. We will continue to support community projects as we can. We have supported the local schools, St John the Evangelist, as well as others. 470 Broadview Ave, Warrenton 540-347-3030 Tolsons.com

TELL US WHY YOU ENJOY DOING BUSINESS IN FAUQUIER COUNTY AND HOW LONG YOUR BUSINESS HAS BEEN LOCATED HERE. I was born and raised in the Washington D.C. area and when I started my career in commercial real estate, I worked for a large brokerage firm that helped me understand this industry but it was a very intense atmosphere daily. When we moved to Warrenton 30 years ago I knew immediately this is where I wanted to live and work and I thoroughly enjoy coming to work every day and working with the business community. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE READERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS, ANY FUTURE PLANS, ACTIVITIES YOU'RE SUPPORTING IN THE COMMUNITY, ETC.? Our company continues to expand and our next step will be creating joint ventures with local investors that will look for investment opportunities in our marketplace. Philanthropically, our company has always supported the community with sponsorships to many local organizations. WERE YOU SURPRISED BY YOUR BEST OF WIN? WHY OR WHY NOT? HAVE YOU WON IN PAST YEARS? WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE REASON READERS LOVE YOUR BUSINESS ENOUGH TO VOTE IT BEST OF? Our physicians are the very best at what they do, for sure, but the positive impression patients have of our doctors is reinforced by their interaction with other people on our staff. In other words, everyone here pulls together in support of our physicians to provide a high standard of care. We get a lot of feedback from patients along the lines of “I didn’t feel like a number,” “they actually listened to me,” and “what a friendly staff.”

Fauquier County, so the patients who come here are sometimes friends, neighbors, and even grandchildren of current or former patients. The doctors also support the community in other ways, such as volunteering as team physicians for the local high schools and organizing an annual fundraiser to benefit local charities. Spring Into Fall! Festivals are back this year, all over the region BY BETH LUNA

As the calendar moves beyond a steamy, wet August, some might long for extended summer days while others look forward to that magical time known as fall in Virginia. After the cancellation of so many events in 2020, we are here to highlight some of our region’s most popular fall festivals as they reschedule and reappear to usher in the new season!

42nd Annual Old Town Warrenton Spring into Fall Festival Saturday, September 18th (rain or shine) 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Main Street - Warrenton Free admission

The 42nd Annual Old Town Warrenton Spring Festival, which was not held last year, has rebranded this year to the Spring into Fall Festival to reflect the move from May to September, according to Christopher Coutts, chair of the organizing committee for the festival and past chair of the Warrenton Chamber of Commerce. The festival is a free event organized by the Chamber to highlight and advocate for the local business community.

“We want to encourage people to come out and support the small business owners who need us, especially now,” he added. The family-friendly festival is largely made up of a wide range of vendors, crafts, food, business to business information tables, and some entertainment, too. You might find original artwork, jewelry, handmade toys, pottery and more while strolling the area. “Main Street is closed off, so you have the opportunity to walk and interact with vendors, hear local music, and enjoy good food,” said Christopher. “This year is a little different, because we are working with Experience Old Town Warrenton and the town to collaborate with the Farmer’s Market, which will be running at the same time. We normally see 20,000-30,000 people come to enjoy Warrenton for the festival!’ “If I had to name my personal favorite parts of the festival, I would say the fantastic food and the opportunity to interact with lots of folks in the community sharing information on their businesses or selling crafts,” Christopher said. “I enjoy running into old and new friends, so many people come out to interact and engage,” he said. “I really just enjoy walking up and down Main Street – it’s all about the people! I am looking forward to interacting in a way that we haven’t in a LONG time – it’s a fun day with a lot to do and see.” The organizing committee is currently monitoring COVID restrictions, and because the festival is outdoors there is not a mask requirement at this time. They plan to honor any changes that the governor implements.

Haymarket Day Saturday, October 16, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Downtown Haymarket Free admission townofhaymarket.org

The annual parade kicks off this year’s Haymarket Day, a hometown street festival. “People love the parade!’ shares Emily Lockhart, Town of Haymarket town planner and parade organizer. “It’s a special time to see kids dancing, bands, ROTC and other participants that come out and perform before entertainment begins on our two main stages.” Attended by over 20,000 spectators and 200 vendors, each stage features a beer garden hosted by 2 Silos Brewing with a variety of food choices up and down Washington Street. Live music begins at 11am on both stages showcasing students from School of Rock and Contemporary Music Center, with local bands Joe’s Dad and Elizabeth Lawerence Band and other performers taking the stage in the afternoon. The Haymarket Museum will feature Haymarket Coffee Company collaborating with MurLarkey Distilled Spirits for special drinks in honor of the day. The Kids Zone is partnering with Park Valley Church to feature moon bounces and other fun kids activities — plus a mobile axe throwing trailer for the adults. “The street is typically crafters, local business owners, and non-profit organizations connecting with the community,” Emily said. “There are lots of crafters this year, so we are looking forward to that.” What are Emily’s personal favorite things to do at the festival? “Heading to the park

LOCAL ADVENTURES

Get Muddy for a Good Cause Broad Run Off Road Hosts Its First Fall Foliage Adventure Race BY HANNAH SAMLALL PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

I

n 2014, Allen Wagner gathered several passionate runners for a group run. Fast forward to today, and the organization Wagner founded that is now known as Broad Run Off Road, has raised over $30,000 for more than eight different local non-profit organizations. They’ve done it through trail runs, fun runs and adventure races donating one hundred percent of the proceeds each time. The first race was held at Leopold’s Preserve in Haymarket. Wagner mapped out a 5k course and created an online sign up sheet for the “Leopold’s Trail 5K.” Over 100 runners showed up on a chilly November morning, complete with donated race bibs and a running clock at the finish line. Year after year, Broad Run Off Road has continued to host a fall trail run at Leopold’s Preserve, adding a fall fest and other events over the years. Two things always stay the same — the race is always 100% run by volunteers, and 100% of any proceeds collected are donated. This fall, you can participate in the organization’s Twilight Trail Race at Leopold’s Preserve on September 25th. This will be its 7th annual race at Leopold’s Preserve. After years of offering runs of all types and for participants of all ages, Wagner and crew were introduced to adventure racing. “Unlike

a standard 10K/5K race with a strictly marked race course, adventure race participants get a map of the park on race morning with marked checkpoints and have a time limit to find as many of the checkpoints as they can,” Wagner said. “Some they will get to by

paddling (using a canoe or kayak) and some by trekking on foot, and no GPS or phones are allowed. They have to navigate with just a map and compass.” In May, Broad Run Off Road put on its first annual Spring Bloom Adventure Race at

We had 21 family-based teams that were parents and their kids,” Wagner said. “We had people come from out of state and we even had a waiting list. We received such great feedback and had people already asking when the next would be held.” Participants were encouraged to leave a review, and here’s some of the feedback: “The perfect mix of thinking and movement!" "This was one of the most fun things I have ever done with my family. Incredibly well organized, too! We've been bit by the bug and looking to do more of these types of

things together. Thank you!" "This was my first adventure race and it was awesome. We had a great time with many laughs." "Cannot wait to do this again! Thank you so much for all of the work that went into putting this together. Unbelievably well organized and thoroughly enjoyed!" "As total newbies who got lost and didn't know what to do, we loved the experience and want to participate in more!" This fall, Broad Run Off Road has decided to host its first annual Fall Foliage Adventure Race in and around C.M. Crockett Park and Germantown Lake in Fauquier County, with 100% of the proceeds going to Girl Scout Troop 90088. “This event is very family-

friendly. We decided to break it down and get rid of the biking portion because we didn’t want there to be barriers for anyone to come join. This one will be on foot and paddling,” Wagner said. “Over 20 girl scouts themselves will actually be competing and participating in the race. You can sign up as a soloist, or a two person or three person team. There are no rules to say you can’t work with another group, too.” If you’re looking to get started in adventure racing, this is a great opportunity to do so. “We’re just hoping to bring more attention to this event as a new fun activity for people to try, and get people to discover this great hidden away park and lake in our area,” Wagner said. “Twenty percent of the people will be trying to win and the rest of the people are just going to have fun, with the majority of the people just there to have a good time.” Registration in the Fall Foliage Adventure Race includes kayak/canoe rental, race shirt, map, race photos, and post-race refreshments. Schedule out remaining 2021 and start planning 2022 with a monthly calendar. Also, give yourself a catch all space for pens, post-it notes, and of course lip gloss for zoom meetings.

Fall Refresh

Bins can be used to hold the home's tech items such as cords, extra phone chargers, overstock of kid's craft items, as well as larger office items that do not fit into the drawer such as light bulbs and batteries. By adding bin clips and labels, any member of the family can easily find what they need without searching through a junk drawer. Installing custom built closets from Closet Factory ensures you are maximizing the space you have.

Organize and declutter your home as we head into autumn Summer’s over, and the kids are back in school. For many of you, this means more time spent in your office space, and by the way, what happened to it over the past weeks? Does it look like a cyclone of papers went through? There’s nothing more than a disorganized office area to make you feel tense and unable to concentrate. Use a day or two now to finally organize it to make time in the future more productive. And while you’re at it, get to the pantry too, and your cleaning supplies, to make the rest of life go more smoothly. Professional organizer Caitlin Adkins of Spaces Organized and Styled in Warrenton gives us her professional advice to help us get our homes back under control for once and for all.

Did you know that Dawn dish liquid is one of the best treatments for grease stains on clothing? Dab some on the stains right away, rub it in gently, and let it sit until laundry day. So of course it should be front and center in your newly organized laundry with all the other cleaning supplies.

Set up good processes in your home office with mail coming in. Make easy sections for "Action, File/ Inbox, Shred". Pro tip: put the shredder close by.

Make meals/dinners easy by pre-sorting foods into categories, and put kids' healthy snacks low to the ground for easy access after school (put the less healthy occasional treats up higher and out of sight!). Use bins for chips so they don’t get crushed, and clear containers for cereal will make it easier to tell when it’s time to put them on the grocery list.

Two Communities, One Goal Warrenton business This n’ That Amish Outlet works with Lancastser, Pennsylvania Amish craftsmen to bring high-end crafted products to Fauquier County BY RACHEL SINGLETON

hether it be a cushioned couch or a spacious, two-story garage, This n’ That Amish Outlet aims to share both the quality and care of authentic Amish craftsmanship with the Fauquier County community. At first glance, these different structures and pieces of furniture do not share a lot in common in their function. But one characteristic that they all carry is the story and the heart of the Amish craftsmen who designed and built them. This n’ That Amish Outlet opens its doors in hopes to share this story with new and loyal customers to Amish products alike. It was an eventful search for a chicken coop that began the story of This n’ That Amish Outlet. Owner Steve Payne and his wife wanted to buy a chicken coop and decided to make the trip up to Pennsylvania in a quest for one. It was there that they met a builder who they still work with to this day. After being impressed by the quality craftsmanship and Amish pride in their work, Payne continued to make several more trips to Amish country, meeting with talented builders and furniture makers. They believed that their local community in Fauquier County would share their appreciation for Amish workmanship. So in 2012, This n’ That Amish Outlet opened its doors, selling outdoor structures such as sheds and garages, gazebos, and large and small animal shelters. Since then, the business has only grown.

In addition to the Amish-crafted furniture that the store is known for, This n’ That Amish Outlet’s wares include some home decor items by local artisans and some Amish-made jarred foods from Lancaster, PA.

This n’ That Amish Outlet now also offers indoor and outdoor furniture, home décor, and gifts for purchase. Every piece of furniture sold in stores or customized is crafted in Lancaster, Pa., also known as Pennsylvania Dutch Country, by Amish craftsmen. Similarly, with their outdoor structures, their team and Amish craftsman aim to meet customer design standards from step one, beginning with a consultation. A site consultant will visit the project site to discuss customer’s options. A trained consultant will also aid in designing and creating the project proposal for the structure. Then Amish craftsmen get to work on creating the customer’s vision. The team will either build off-site and then transport the structure to the prepared pad, or travel to the project location for a buildon-site project. This n’ That Amish Outlet began establishing themselves in Warrenton at their first location on Fifth Street, and when a Main Street spot opened up, Marketing Manager Evelyn Cobert said it was a “nobrainer” to move. Since then, the This n’ That Amish Outlet team has found joy in being surrounded by the Fauquier County community. “It’s such a different feel than all of our other stores, and I truly believe that’s because of all of the other business owners and all of the town supporting each other,” said Furniture Director Breann Mullen. “This store has almost that ‘lovey dovey’ kind of feel with, not only the employees but other merchants and being able to see familiar faces on a day today. And we even have customers that just stop in and say hi,” she continued. One part of the store that the team takes the most pride in is the story behind their products. Mullen said, “I talk directly to the Amish families that make this furniture, make all of these items. The fact is that you can feel so good buying from us because you’re supporting a small Amish family where this is their livelihood. The Amish and what they do best truly does translate.” To the This n’ That Amish Outlet, working with their Amish craftsmen isn’t like working with the typical corporate or business vendor. “It’s not like calling up Amazon or Walmart. It’s just one of those things where over the years, we’ve built personal relationships,” said Cobert. Mullen added that every time she calls them, she feels like she is calling family. “Not only do they care about their product, but they care about the well-being of our company.”

Because the Amish craftsmen are not a corporate company, COVID has hit these families hard. One specific challenge was the increase in lumber prices that impacted the workmen's construction of their well-known hardwood furniture. Despite this, the workers continued to put care into their products and have taken on the cost because of their consideration for the consumers. “Making it an affordable, quality product is truly what they care about and what we want to bring to the forefront of our company,” said Mullen. Being part of the This n’ That Amish Outlet team is personal for Cobert and Mullen. Cobert has known the owners of the store for over 20 years, and her relationship motivates her to strive for the business’s success. “Being a small family business, you get those core family values, and it is one of those things where you become such a family working here,” said Cobert. Mullen reiterated her connection to the community as her main motivation. “COVID was really hard, but with that being said, I think the community really came together during that time. We can’t really express how much the appreciation is for that and that in turn motivates us and also motivates the sales employees.” Mullen felt this community even more as local events began to kick back in for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. This n’ That Amish Outlet participated in both the Fauquier Fair and the Wizard Walk, where they ran a custom, house tie-making station. Mullen described these recent events as a “breath of fresh air for the community” that “rejuvenates us as a company.” This n’ That Amish Outlet is open for business in Winchester, Warrenton, Old Town and Leesburg. Not Just Vegetables... So Much More Messick’s Farm Market has become a community destination for fresh local products of all kinds as well as seasonal events and activities. STORY AND PHOTOS BY LINDSAY HOGEBOOM

F

or more than a century, the Messick family served Fauquier County community members through their dairy farm in Bealeton, Virginia. “We were dairy farmers the whole time up until November [of 2020] when we decided that dairying was no longer the business we wanted to go with because it wasn’t what it used to be,” says Jimmy Messick, who runs the farm with his brother, Ronnie. Today, the Messick family continues to serve the local community, but primarily through farming fresh produce and providing agritourism. “Back in 2008 my brother and I had a conversation about the farm and where it was going,” says Jimmy. “We talked about diversification into either processing our milk and selling our milk products or building a market.” That conversation was put on hold until a few years later when a neighbor with farmette had an enterprise that had outgrown his land, and he approached Jimmy about a partnership. Jimmy recalls, “He asked me if I would help him grow vegetables for his [Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program], and I said, ‘Yeah…I’ll help you, but I don’t know anything about it.’ He said, ‘Well, I’ve got the equipment so I can help, and together we can do it.’” Jimmy set aside a plot of land on his farm and began growing vegetables. As they were growing produce for the CSA, it became apparent that the Messicks’

farm was in an ideal location for opening a storefront. “The whole time we were doing it we could see all the traffic going by through the woods on the highway, and local food was starting to get some footing, so we decided maybe it was time to go on and build a market,” says Jimmy. “By 2013 we were in full produce production…anticipating having the market open,” and in spring of 2014, Messick’s Farm Market officially opened. “We built it with zero customer base…and it took us awhile. There were some sleepless nights for the first four or five years, but now it’s doing well.” And, Jimmy explains, the agritourism portion of the business “initially was not on the to-do list, but after we saw all the interest people had in going out and learning more about the farm, it seemed like it was a natural thing to do. According to Jimmy, the mission of the business today is “to provide fresh, healthy, local foods at a fair price, while managing the sustainability of our family farm.” The Messicks fulfill this mission through a variety of offerings: fresh foods in the farm market, meals at the market café, and a CSA program, as well as many special activities and events, such as “pick-your-own” harvesting experiences, a petting zoo, hayrides and farm tours, seasonal festivals, and more. “The mission also goes back to a story,” says Jimmy. “Jim Hankins — the guy who runs the Fauquier Education Farm in Warrenton — [told] me a story that one of the most amazing things he ever witnessed was a mother and her son digging potatoes, and the mother realizing that potatoes grew under the ground. It’s that type of thing that

{ SEPTEMBER 2021 |

I’m trying to help [do] with our community here — understanding how food is grown and what we do.” Jimmy also says that to honor their mission, there is another aspect of the business that the Messicks emphasize: customer service. “We try to go beyond what you might expect a business like this to do,” he says. “We’re faith-based here…[and] we come in to work on Sundays with a serving heart.” The Messicks don’t contain their quality customer service within the market’s walls — they continue to bring joy to community members through numerous events, from a summer sunflower festival to regular cruiseins featuring cool cars, live music, food, and frozen custard. says, “We go to the cruise-in every time they have it. We love it!” And the end of summer doesn’t mean the end of events. During the fall, “our pumpkin festival usually goes for six weekends,” Jimmy says. “It was very successful last year,” and with a giant corn maze, bale mazes, hayrides, a bounce pillow, underground slides, pebble pits, mini pumpkin painting, a petting zoo and more, it isn’t hard to imagine why. Katie Butler, a Midland resident and event attendee, says, “I enjoy their spring craft fair! It was great to have all the local vendors. I can’t pass up getting a cherry pie too!” Regarding future plans for the business, Jimmy says, “We’ve got lots of future plans — probably more than I will live to see.” At the top of that list is expanding the farm

and market to include a fully functioning winery. “We’re trying to think of a way to do an open-air building where we could move our wine display and expand our wine and hard cider, and maybe some locally-crafted beers,” he explains. Currently, the farm market sells wine that is made from fruits grown on the Messicks’ farm that is crafted and bottled through a partnership with Magnolia Vineyards in Amissville. “We just bottled our third harvest, and this year with the strawberry, blackberry and elderberry we did 14,000 bottles so far,” Jimmy says. “Glen, the owner, says, ‘Jimmy, I built this thing to do 25,000 bottles a year and you’re over half of it. You need to find your own facility.’ So now we’re looking to see where we can do a winery.” For now, Jimmy says, “I hope that people look at this as an alternative to buying things that aren’t local and [aren’t] as fresh.” And, as the business continues to grow it will go on serving local residents in both established and new ways. “Whenever there’s a successful business in the community, it makes the community stronger,” he says. Unleashing Musical Creativity Modal Music in Warrenton inspires passion to perform BY BETH LUNA PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

T

he universal language of music spreads love, heals divides, banishes differences, and creates plain, oldfashioned fun for all ages. Some are happy just to listen, but if you are one of those individuals who feel compelled to create music, Modal Music in Warrenton is your local go-to. The store was founded by Dan Mudge, who lives in Old Town Warrenton, and Chris Bauer from Rappahannock County, who currently play together in a comedy band called Loathsome Wind. Dan also has another band called Grass Fed which is known for its covers of Beatles songs, and Chris has another band called Make for Maine which is an emo rock band. Modal first welcomed students and customers last December to their new Main Street Warrenton location, closing out a fickle 2020 with a bang by opening their doors for music and voice lessons, recording studio bookings, and instrument sales. Dan and Chris bring a wealth of talent, passion, and know-how to their new storefront with the hope of inspiring music lovers young and not-so-young. “We're known for our fun and engaging lessons. We specialize in any and all music genres. Whatever styles the student wants to learn, we can help. We encourage our students to perform both solos and in groups, such as rock bands and school orchestras, and Dan occasionally runs rock band classes,” said Chris. “We were so welcomed here,” Dan shared. “It is surprising how many people stop in just to say how glad they are we are here, to see what we are about and what we do. We have started connecting with the community – we have some students now whose parents run businesses here in Old Town – that is really cool.”

Chris Bauer and Dan Mudge, founders of Modal Music Studio

Modal offers lessons in guitar, bass, ukulele, piano, and violin as well as vocal lessons, songwriting, music theory, notation, and more. “Most of our students come in between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. any given day, and we can teach 8 to 12 lessons per day,” said Dan. Students of all ages and levels participate; Modal specializes in listening to each student’s goals and customizing a path. “I have a lot of adult students, several who have been retired for a number of years and decided that now is the time,” Dan commented. “They thought they were too old or couldn’t do it – and that is not true at all. Some are in their 70s, and they have really progressed and learned to play songs. Whether they are seven or 70, it’s always great to see them learn a song they’ve always

wanted to play and go through that process.” One particular student dreamed of performing at an open mic night, and Modal helped him get there on his own terms. “This was one of our goals from the start,” Dan said. “Not long before the pandemic, we practiced and prepared, and then went to Fat Tuesday’s where I performed and then he took the stage and performed. We put together a few more songs, and then we went and performed again. Now, we are working on a couple of duets, and when they are ready, we will be back out there!” Along with a wide array of lesson offerings, Modal’s recording studio is a real asset to the area. Sitting between a home studio and a fully professional operation, they offer studio time, engineering, songwriting, arranging,

and session musicians, so truly anyone with a song to record can use the facility. “We wanted to offer the recording studio,” Dan said, “and it has really been popular over and above music lessons at this point.” One eleven-year-old student studying voice with Modal vocal teacher Hayleigh Wilson had some lyrics and wanted to write a full song. “Our vocal teacher helped him build the song from the lyrics he had, and then we recorded it,” Chris shared. “Another student had recorded a guitar/vocal album, and we added woodblock, bass, and more. Whatever is needed to begin or even finish

out a song or project, we can do it!” The Modal walls are lined with guitars for sale – some new, some refurbished, some under consignment for students and friends, and some from Dan’s personal collection. “We are shopping for guitars to purchase and then upgrade with something custom, get set up, and offer for sale,” said Dan. Dealing with the business side of music for Modal – like searching out vendors – is helping the pair to expand their skill set. “We are working on stocking more products, like picks and other guitar accessories,” Dan said. “It’s a whole new thing we are learning about – vendors, distribution deals, taxes, running a business.” Chris added, “We are constantly learning and expanding, trying to be modern and push the envelope.” “It takes a lot of time,” Dan said. “We work long hours doing a job we love — but even so it can be exhausting!” Modal is talking to the Town of Warrenton about performing in front of the store so they can showcase both themselves and their students. “Most performances are in venues where you have to be 18 or 21, so our students that are younger can’t see us perform,” Dan shared. “I was lucky to

be able to see my teacher perform when I was 13 and 14 when going to a bar for live music wasn’t an issue.” They believe it’s unfortunate that these days, live music isn’t the chosen activity it once was. “Live music was everywhere, and people loved to seek it out,” Dan said. “Getting our students to see that it is a fun activity and exposes them to the idea of it is something we really want to do. Hopefully, we can get more live music into people’s lives and inspire the next generation to keep music as part of their extra-curricular activities.” Modal continues to offer virtual lessons to those who are more comfortable that way; 80% of lessons are now in person. “We expect a surge in the Fall, once families are back on a schedule and looking for additional activities.” Stop in, take a look, chat with the staff, and you too may be inspired to sign up your child, or even yourself, to start some lessons and create some music! Nurturing Nature at Warrenton’s Clifton Institute STORY AND PHOTOS BY LINDSAY HOGEBOOM

“T

o inspire the next generation of environmental stewards, to learn about the ecology of the northern Virginia Piedmont, and to conserve native biodiversity” — this is the mission of the Clifton Institute, a Warrenton non-profit located on Blantyre Road. The organization’s 900-acre property, which is permanently protected under a conservation easement, boasts a variety of beautiful landscapes and wildlife habitats and provides an ideal setting for the environmental education, habitat restoration, and ecological research being conducted by Clifton Institute staff and volunteers. GET TO KNOW THE DIRECTORS

For Bert Harris, executive director of the Clifton Institute, his interest in nature began during his childhood in north Alabama, where he became fascinated by birds.

58

{ SEPTEMBER 2021 |

WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

This interest grew as he continued his education at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. “I started a natural history club to try to get other students interested in animals and plants that were on the campus,” says Bert. “That kind of gave me the idea of what it would be like to do environmental education.” Eleanor Harris, managing director of the Clifton Institute, explains that while she has always had a love for the outdoors and animals, her career path took a slight detour in college, where she majored in mathematics before discovering her passion for biology her senior year. During graduate school in computational biology, “I was a teacher’s assistant for a couple classes and then I volunteered at a local prison teaching algebra. I realized I really loved teaching.”

After the couple moved to Virginia in 2015, they began attending and volunteering with the Clifton Institute’s education programs. In 2018, the Clifton Institute’s board of directors brought on both Bert and Eleanor to co-direct the organization. The couple lives in Marshall and are conducting restoration and conservation efforts at their home also, which ties into their work at the Institute. PROVIDING NATURE-BASED EDUCATION

Clockwise: Eleanor helps a child identify animal tracks in the mud during a youth hikes program; Bert and Eleanor take part in the Christmas Bird Count, the country’s longest-running community science bird project; Bert plants a tree as part of a 2021 Clifton Institute initiative to plant nearly 1000 trees along creeks in a 100-acre grassland to create riparian buffers that will prevent soil erosion and improve water quality.

Bert and Eleanor work with staff members and volunteers to provide a wide variety of educational programs for youth year-round, including summer camps, nature and science clubs, and guided hikes around the field station. “A big part of our teaching philosophy is letting kids drive our programs,” says Eleanor. “We always stop and talk about whatever they want to because whatever is catching their interest is the thing that they’re going to go home and remember, tell their friends about and want to come back and see again.” However, Eleanor says they are mindful of keeping a healthy balance between exploratory time and structured lessons. “I think those two things play off of each other — of course…there is specific scientific information we're trying to impart, but then we also want to make sure to give them time just to be outside, getting to know each other and getting to know the landscape.” The Clifton Institute also offers educational programs for adults, including monthly bird walks and Mindful Naturalists programs, a series created to inspire mindful observation and nature appreciation. Many of the educational programs the organization offers — both for adults and youth, in-person and virtual — are free, making them highly accessible. According to Eleanor, “One special thing about our organization is that we’re not just an education organization and we’re not just a conservation organization, but we're both of those things, and they feed off of each other in a really positive way. By having kids and adults come to our programs we get to show them the restoration work that

we’re doing so they get to see what they can do on their own properties…. Vice versa, having kids and adults here also helps our restoration work because we hear from them what they want to learn and what problems they’re having on their own properties.” RESTORING THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA PIEDMONT

One facet of the Clifton Institute’s mission is conserving native biodiversity. To that end, staff are conducting a number of restoration initiatives, a major focus being northern Piedmont grasslands. “They’re almost all gone now — they’re hanging on in little, tiny fragments in powerline clearings mainly,” says Bert, “but there’s a lot of interest in restoring them. When people buy land, many want to convert their non-native fields into wildflower meadows.” Bert says that if the Clifton Institute can work with landowners to tweak their seed mixes to consist of Virginia-native plants, then grassland restoration can happen on a large scale across the region. “I think that’s important because not many people are advocating for Piedmont prairie restoration. By being picky about the seed mixes around here, we can plant beautiful wildflower meadows that are also recreating these prairies.” In addition to providing information and seed mixes for grassland restoration, the Clifton Institute recently hired a new employee who visits properties and gives landowners advice about managing their land for the benefit of local plants and wildlife.

CONDUCTING ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH

During 2021, the Clifton Institute’s primary research project will be tracking American Kestrels to determine what kinds of habitats these birds use for hunting to better understand the causes for the species’ decline. “An interesting thing about the project is its overlap with agriculture,” says Bert. “For a lot of the conservation tactics that people recommend, you have to stop agricultural production on your land. But with Kestrels, you should be able to have a win-win in some way. They really like the short grass that cows maintain, and row crops may also be suitable. We don't know the details yet, but there's definitely promise.” A GEM IN WARRENTON

When asked what makes the Clifton Institute unique, Eleanor says, “Our property is just such a special place. We're really fortunate to have…all sorts of different habitats, and an amazing amount of biodiversity that we can show our visitors.” Eleanor says this is important because allowing people to interact with nature in this way fosters a sense of environmental stewardship that will benefit the future people, land and wildlife of Fauquier County and beyond. “My goal, especially in our education programs, is not so much to impart solutions to any one problem, but hopefully to get both kids and adults to care about doing the right thing for the environment in general.” In addition, Eleanor says, “I think…it's good for our society to have happier, more grounded, peaceful, compassionate people from having spent time outside.” To learn more about the Clifton Institute’s education offerings and environmental restoration and research initiatives, visit cliftoninstitute.org.

When Stefanie Mendoza and Alex Contreras met, Stefanie was on the hunt for a babysitter for her two kids. Stefanie was an amateur photographer at the time, taking photos of her kids, and Alex was studying photography at NOVA and photographing families in her free time. “When I first got into photography, I was taking photos of my kids, and flowers. The definite inspiration was my kids. I've always been super creative though,” Stefanie said. “I’m a jack of all trades.” Prior to being a photographer, Stefanie was a musician and traveled while on tour with her brother. “Being a musician has always been a huge part of my life,” Stefanie said. “I come from a family of musicians. My brother and I formed a folk/alternative/ acoustic duo called ‘Alleghany St.’ around 2009. We toured across the country 3 times. After my brother moved to California, I started Singing and playing guitar for local churches as a part of the worship team. Now, I just play for my kids. Maybe one day I will play out again!”

Stefanie (left) and Alex (right) combined their two photography businesses after assisting each other on wedding shoots.

Both women have roots in Fauquier County. Stefanie moved to the area in 8th grade and attended Warrenton Middle and Fauquier High and was a cheerleader during her time at Fauquier. “Growing up here really slowed down things for our family,” Stefanie said. “We moved from Fairfax and the average classroom size went from 50 people to 15 people. I didn’t know anyone when I moved here, but everyone was friendly and I made friends really quickly.” After graduating from high school, Stefanie attended cosmetology school and stayed in the area to be closer to her family. Alex grew up here, after having moved to the area from Centreville when she was just four years old. Alex went to multiple schools in the area, but had no problem making friends. “I played soccer for FCSC from ages 7 to age 17, so I had friends at every school in the area that I met through soccer,” Alex said. “I also played field hockey in high school, I was in theatre and I did travel soccer.” In addition to being involved in sports growing up, Alex grew up with a camera in her hand. “My dad really loved photography my whole life,” Alex said. “He taught me what I know now, starting from a really young age. Growing up, I was taking photos of anything I could.” Both Stefanie and Alex were shooting weddings when they first met. Many times, weddings require a second shooter. “We started second shooting weddings for each other and then doing creative shoots on the side,” Alex said. “We eventually had the thought ‘why aren’t we doing this together?’ We merged our businesses from there.” House of Amsel Photography has now been offering wedding, family, and newborn photography services for over 5 years. “Last year, we got a studio in Warrenton, which has always been our dream,” Alex said. “We’ll be able to streamline and be able to take outdoor photographs around northern Virginia. We both love genuine happiness.

66

{ SEPTEMBER 2021 |

We love genuine love and the things people seem to overlook because they’re so small. Those details are our favorite.” In addition to shooting weddings and families together, Stefanie and Alex like to exercise their creativity in styled shoots, as well. “We used to do styled creative shoots together with fantasy and fairytale elements,” Stefanie said. “One we did was Alice and Wonderland inspired! We also do styled shoots that involve mock wedding setups.” Another aspect of their business that they take pride in is being part of the community

and being able to introduce their clients to the area if they’re not from here. “Growing up here means that we can rattle off everything to our clients that aren’t from here,” Stefanie said. “They come from other counties and really enjoy that it’s a small town. There’s such a sense of community and we see people we know everywhere we go.” Not long after they signed on at their studio in Warrenton, the pandemic hit, but they didn’t let it discourage them. “It gave us time to hone in on our offerings and our goals. We figured out how to make it work within four walls,” Alex said. “We really do want to grow in the studio.” With photography being a saturated market, it can be difficult to make yourself a standout photographer, but House of Amsel Photography has a specific style. “We wholeheartedly believe there is a photographer out there for everyone,” Stefanie said. “We offer an authentic, moody, and romantic vibe. That’s something that sets us apart here. Our style is different.” One of the biggest takeaways from the women of House of Amsel is how passionate they are about the community. “A lot of our clients we’ve been photographing every milestone, engagement, wedding, then when they’re pregnant and have their first baby,” Alex said. “We want you to be able to have someone you trust to capture your entire life. And, of course, we have fun with everyone — that’s a big deal to us. No fake smiles here.” houseofamselphotography.com Instagram @houseofamsel

Many wedding clients return to us for newborn photo shoots when their children come along.

New Digital Story Map Shines A Light on Fauquier’s African American History Collaboration of two important local nonprofits results in treasure trove of learning possibilities VIA PRESS RELEASE

T

he Afro-American Historical Association of Fauquier County and The Piedmont Environmental Council are pleased to announce the launch of a new, interactive, online story map documenting the African American experience in Fauquier County. Created with funding support by The PATH Foundation, the story map will give people, perhaps for the first time in history, digital access to information about the history and contributions of Fauquier’s African American communities, schools and churches established before and after the Civil War. In 1860, about half of Fauquier County’s population was made up of free and enslaved African Americans. On the heels of the historical periods of slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the great migration, and civil rights and integration, descendants of these

residents now make up less than 10 percent of Fauquier’s population. Only remnants of their many communities are still present, yet their contributions to Fauquier County remain. This story map attempts to tell the history of the lives of these often overlooked and forgotten Americans. The interactive story map, visible at www. aahafauquier.org/storymap, includes a map of Fauquier County with points locating African American schools, churches and communities. Visitors can click on each point to see a photo and read a short description. A “read more” cue takes visitors to an interactive webpage with additional history and photographs. “For many years, I have envisioned a map of Fauquier County with various overlays pertaining to African American history. When Kristie [Kendall, PEC historic preservation

coordinator] and I talked about it, I thought: yes! This would be one layer of African American heritage, and immediately my mind started racing about all the other stories and history that could be continuously compiled. A lot of Fauquier’s history is well documented, but the African-American presence is often invisible within textbooks and other areas,” said AAHA President Karen Hughes White. Kendall said the project was a “massive undertaking” on the part of AAHA staff, who led the project and built upon decades of prior research identifying and documenting the history of African-Americans in the county. PEC provided drone photography, and with its story mapping experience, created the interactive web map embedded within the story map site, which is hosted through PEC’s ArcGIS Online subscription. AAHA Digital Programs Director Aysha Davis, Hughes White’s granddaughter, built out the story map with AAHA's collected history, stories and imagery. Fauquier County Geographic Information Systems department provided tremendous geolocation assistance with specific latitude and longitude coordinates for many of the points on the map. Dan Stell of Fauquier County GIS department said, “AAHA’s desire to utilize geospatial technology to highlight such an important part of history is another demonstration of the limitless uses of GIS in today’s world. Story maps give their audience the ability to connect people, stories, and various forms of media to the places they occurred for a more relatable view of history. I know many generations to come will greatly benefit from AAHA’s commitment to preserving and highlighting our local history. Fauquier County was delighted to be a partner in their mission and we look forward to future opportunities using GIS for historic preservation,” he said. AAHA envisions the story map becoming a resource for many. It will be good for scholars as they are studying local history. Educators

will find it an important resource within the classroom. “It’s been so exciting to watch this project unfold. Many hours went into creating a tool that I cannot wait for our teachers and students to have at their fingertips. While we often feel history is something that happened long ago, and maybe even in a far off place, the efforts to bring this local history to our students in ways that make it accessible remind me that we are so fortunate to have community partners who are dedicated to preserving and telling our stories for a deeper understanding of the place we live,” said Amy Acors, an instructional supervisor of history at Fauquier Public Schools.

“It is important that children are able to connect to persons, places and things, and to have information that reminds them of who they are and gives them a sense of self-worth and humanity,” said Hughes White, who added that many in her own generation were often sheltered from the knowledge of their family’s lineage and difficult histories. For AAHA Board Member Angela Davidson, the story map project has given her “a whole new sense of pride in families that came through Reconstruction to today.” She is one of four generations living on property purchased in the early 1870s by her great-great grandfather, Brister Grigsby,

Founded in 1992, the Afro-American Historical Society of Fauquier County serves as an invaluable resource for those researching their own family history or the history of the region. Its 4,269-square-foot museum is home to thousands of artifacts and archives documenting the African American experience from slavery to freedom in Fauquier County and provides interactive experiences for school and community groups. in historic Morgantown. “Increasing development and rising property values are impacting our communities, Davidson said. “I think all of us, at my age and younger, are looking at how long these communities will remain intact. I’m afraid if we don’t get this history documented, it will be lost. I think if new owners know the history of what’s taken place on the property they’re buying, they will take pride in these historic communities in which they’re living.” Over time, Davis and AAHA are hoping to add other African-American contributions, including cemeteries, buildings, businesses, baptism sites, and landmarks pertaining to the underground railroad. And the group hopes other community members will recommend additions as they realize they have photographs or other artifacts that can be shared through the story map. “This will be something that will definitely live beyond us,” Hughes White said. “PEC was honored to partner with AAHA in their effort to make more visible the breadth of African-American achievement through a story map that includes all of the known churches, schools and AfricanAmerican communities across Fauquier County. The information contained in the story map is an important testament to African-American agency and determination to overcome obstacles and persevere in establishing strong, flourishing communities that remain to this day,” Kendall said. “The partnership between AAHA and PEC will bring forth a wealth of knowledge regarding African-American communities and stories throughout Fauquier County,” said Christy Connolly, president and CEO of The PATH Foundation, which provided funding for the project. “We felt that this project was a great collaboration between two exceptional nonprofits leveraging each other’s strengths to achieve a richer, fuller understanding of our region’s history and culture. The story map is an exciting tool for anyone seeking to know more about our region’s past, present and future.” www.aahafauquier.org/storymap
