his is our back to school issue, and again I reached out to the community for input for the article, and again, many people replied. Many thanks to all who did - you make Warrenton Lifestyle so much more than just a regular local magazine. I asked what people's hopes are for the new school year. Of course, almost everyone wants things back to normal for the kids, both for academic and social reasons. Things like support from teachers and coaches, interaction with peers, both as friends and dating, school dances, sports, both as athletes and as spectators, theatre and other extracurricular activities were some of the things so sorely missed last year at all ages. People also expressed thanks and appreciation for the teachers and staff for trying so hard to give what they could to the kids during the virtual and hybrid year. Our second main feature is Lola the miniature therapy horse, a local mini who visits schools and nursing homes with her handler Valerie Amster. This is horse country, and back in the day I used to raise and train horses for eventing and foxhunting. I have had no experience with minis, but I do have with ponies. With exceptions, of course, I found ponies to be difficult creatures, mostly because they are too small for an experienced adult to ride and train, and they develop bad habits taking advantage of smaller, younger riders. I was the smallest back then, so I always got to train the ponies. Some of them were downright...difficult. So a mini horse who was quiet and gentle enough to use as a therapy animal intrigued me. Valerie says that horses bring so much more depth to pet therapy than dogs do. Having experienced the soothing effect of the nature of horses, I can see this. There’s nothing like a talented horse you have a bond with. And, this being horse country, Lola encounters seniors with horse experience, and giving them the experience of interacting with a horse again is so incredibly valuable. Wishing all our students and teachers a happy back to school!

or 10 years, Sarah Shores suffered from Lyme disease. She had tried conventional medicine to treat her symptoms, but they were not alleviated and she continued to live with pain. That is, until five years ago, when Shores traveled to the West Coast to try a new technology, called the Blu Room®. “I got immediate relief in my first Blu Room session,” she says. Shores continued to visit Blu Rooms on the West Coast and in Canada — the very few places on the continent where this treatment was available at that time. The experience turned Shores into an advocate for the technology, and during the summer of 2020 she decided to bring the East Coast its first Blu Room by opening her own wellness center on West Lee Street in Warrenton.

About the Blu Room The Blu Room is often described as futuristic, and with its octagonal shape, soft blue lighting, and polished stainless steel

mirrors from floor to ceiling, it’s not difficult to see why. Together, these elements create a calming environment for users that isolates them from the many stimuli constantly competing for our attention in our daily environment. During a typical 20-minute session, users lay on a bed in the center of the room and are soothed by calming music as they are exposed to limited amounts of ultraviolet B (UV-B) light that helps the body to produce vitamin D, or the “sunshine vitamin.” Vitamin D is known to provide a number of health benefits, including improved immune system function and better mood regulation. In addition, sound waves tuned to the frequency of 111 hertz resonate throughout the room. According to one study shared by Shores, the frequency of 111 hertz is associated with cell regeneration, which helps facilitate the healing process experienced in the Blu Room. “The

combination of light, music, the 111 hertz and the shape of the room creates a relaxing atmosphere,” Shores says. When a client arrives for a session, they begin by taking off their shoes, entering the Blu Room, laying down on the bed at the center, and adjusting the pillows for comfort. From there, Shores turns on the music, closes the door, and the session begins. “After the initial session, people report a variety of sensations, from feeling relaxed to experiencing pain relief,” says Shores. She recommends that for best results, new clients should begin with two sessions per week, and after a few weeks can adjust the frequency of their visits to fit their needs.

Bringing Wellness to Warrenton “I have major respect for small business owners,” says Shores, who became one herself for the first time last August when she opened Warrenton Wellness in the midst of COVID-19. While some businesses

it is “very rewarding to watch people find relief”

were struggling to remain viable during the pandemic, Shores says it was opportune timing for opening her wellness center, given the nation-wide focus on health and healing, both physically and mentally. Having lived in Amissville for 28 years, she chose nearby Warrrenton because of its charm, especially Old Town. “Also, I knew there were people out there like me who would travel to experience the Blu Room, and Warrenton is

a wonderful place to visit and is close to other places such as Shenandoah National Park.” Shores emphasizes that while the Blu Room is not a medical device, many people do experience healing effects thanks to the deep relaxation it facilitates. A “Frequently Asked Questions” document from Shores’s center explains, “Since the mind is the greatest healer and the mind is inextricably intertwined with DNA, the Blu Room can augment a person’s natural healing abilities.” However, the results vary by individual. “People get out of it what they put into it,” says Shores. “It’s been wonderful to see what kinds of people walk through the door, [including] people like me for whom conventional medicine wasn’t working.” Shores asserts that while the Blu Room is not a replacement for conventional medicine, it is a great supplement to add to any treatment routine.

For others who may not be experiencing physical pain, the Blu Room can be beneficial to mental health, providing an experience similar to meditation. “One of the things I hope people take away is the importance of their thoughts,” says Shores. “Our self-talk has an effect [on our overall health].” As for future plans, Shores says she would like to strengthen her connections with veterans and first responders — communities Shores is familiar with due to her previous experience in the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Defense. It is not uncommon for people working in these fields to experience post-traumatic stress disorder, and Shores believes the Blu Room at her wellness center can help to combat the symptoms of this mental health condition. No matter the reason for their visit, it is “very rewarding to watch people find relief,” says Shores. “When you’re exposed to positive frequencies, it changes things. How many people take the time to do that?” For the Warrenton and surrounding communities, Shores hopes it will be more thanks to the light therapy she provides at Warrenton Wellness. individual bottle. Education can be found in every corner of Jill’s store, from diagrams on the wall to every well-trained employee equipped to educate and support people who are new to CBD oil. “I saw the way this stuff helped my parents and dogs, and I believe in it,” Jill says of why she opened the store. Jill followed her gut into pursuing the store and was quickly met with the overwhelming magnitude of what is involved in opening a retail store. After waiting months from when they signed their contract, the day they got the keys to their store was the day Jill found out that she had thyroid cancer. While the cancer metastasized to her lymph nodes and stole her voice for months, Jill didn’t give up because she knew her pursuit was worth the benefits it could bring. Jill says it was “God’s way of saying, ‘take any chances you get’.” The hemp plant is an accumulator —

am thirty minutes into my first conversation with Jill Blocker, owner of Your CBD Store in Warrenton, over the phone when she gives me an open invitation into her home. “Please come over,” Jill says, and she is just as inviting with every space she can open to people—both figurative and literal. A mother of three to Brayden, Garion, and Tyler (four if you count her golden retriever, Phoenix), small business owner, and someone who may have paid for your coffee in line at Starbucks, Jill vibrates with the energy that has the power to revitalize anyone who gets a moment of her time. From visiting Florida to support her parents around their skin cancer surgeries to decorating her agenda with people she wants to connect with, Jill’s CBD store is just one of the many ways she is intent on reaching out and lending a helping hand. It all started with her first business in pet care, Happy Paws, when she encountered a dog that had been severely abused and was not receptive to any of the interventions they tried. A longtime friend, Beth, who also owns multiple Your CBD Stores, suggested Jill explore CBD for the agitated dog. “It was like night and day,” Jill said of the dog’s behavioral change. Blocker continued to explore the benefits of CBD with her loved ones, learned all she could about it, and followed her intuition, which led her to open her store in Warrenton Village Center. Jill self-identifies as “the worst salesperson in the world” because her motivation doesn’t rely on people walking out of her store having spent money. “I want to help you, that’s my first thing. My first question is, ‘what can I do?’” Jill asks her customers. Jill and her team are one step ahead in understanding people’s fears and apprehension with something as packed with misconception as cannabidiol (CBD). Derived from the hemp plant, CBD has been around for centuries and scientific advancements have allowed for more precise extraction. The organic SunMed products available in Your CBD Store prioritize transparency by including what goes into each batch on each

sounds and smells that calm the senses—a sanctuary for those who wander in. Jill says that “CBD is not what you feel, it’s what you don’t feel,” and employees are focused on “a weight [being] lifted off you” when you enter. This idea goes beyond Jill’s business and into how she lives her life. Given the chance to get to know Jill, I didn’t feel her struggles or toil. That’s not to say that she is without them, but instead is a testament to how she leads with light. “I don’t want to tell someone ‘life’s not that hard’ because, for most people, we don’t know what their challenges are or what they’re going through, but at the end of the day just love with everything that you have and be a good person,” Jill encourages. Intent on “brightening someone’s day in some way,” you may find Jill working with animals at Happy Paws or involved in Kettle Run High School’s lacrosse team that her youngest son participates in and husband, Larry, coaches. You might even get invited to her Halloween party at her home off Baldwin Street (it’s highly possible). Whether you explore the store or not, you’ve got a friend in Jill Blocker. “We get one shot at this life,” she says. Take it from Jill, and “make it the best you can for yourself and for others.”

a Story toTell Lola the Mini Therapy Horse heals through her presence, songs, and stories

BY PAM KAMPHUIS

{ AUGUST 2021 |

The Beginning Valerie, who lives in Warrenton, met Lola in June of 2018 after her foal was weaned, and she brought Lola to the Fauquier County farm where she kept her riding horse. Already a volunteer with the local organization A Little Magic Mini Therapy Horse Team, Valerie began evaluating Lola to see if she would be a good fit for the work right away. “The minis have to have many specific qualities to be certified as a therapy animal,” says Valerie. “They have to be extremely quiet and gentle, and they have to have an affinity for the work.” Valerie started working with Lola on basics, giving her lots of attention and handling, lots of grooming, and as many new experiences as she could find. This is very important, that a therapy horse be able to take new experiences in stride and not panic when they encounter

anything they haven’t seen before, including hearing noise, being indoors, and stepping on different types of flooring that might feel funny under their hooves. Lola lives at Sligo Stables off Old Auburn Road in Warrenton, which is an excellent place for new encounters

e live in horse country where you can find a horse around every corner. But they’re generally of the larger sort for riding, and they generally don’t ride in minivans. Meet a local horse with a different purpose: Lola the Miniature Therapy Horse. There are a lot of differences between Lola and her larger equine counterparts. First of all, she only weighs 250 pounds and stands 29 inches tall. With no need for a horse trailer, she just hops — by herself — into her owner’s minivan, which is set up just like a stall with rubber mats and wood shavings. And she has a very different sort of job. As a miniature therapy horse, Lola visits schools, nursing homes, retirement facilities, and hospitals with her owner and handler Valerie Amster to engage with the students and residents.

Therapy animal handlers are responsible first and foremost for the health and comfort of the animals, so Amster supports Lola and checks on her often during their visits. Valerie explains, “We’d set up right outside, and the students would come out to us. The kids would groom Lola, which helps with their fine motor skills. They’d put butterfly clips in her mane, which gives them pincer-grasp practice. We’d set up an obstacle course for Lola and give the kids a second lead line so they could help guide her through it, weaving through cones and maybe even a little jump. They just loved it.”

Expanding Lola’s Horizons

BY RACHEL PIERCE

Right: Valerie found that Lola’s true love is seniors, as here at the Fauquier Senior Center Below: On the road. Lola rides in a 2005 Honda minivan with 359,000 miles on it, eating hay from a bag on the console between the front seats and looking out the windshield.

since they have other types of livestock and animals, including two ponies, a warmblood horse, two ducks, two rabbits, and chickens for her to interact with. Her biggest training challenge? “Potty training, definitely,” says Valerie, “ since horses do not generally learn that.”

Going Pro

On the Road Lola and Valerie’s first official therapy gigs were at schools. Outfitted in her “Therapy Horse in Training” tag, they visited elementary schools in Culpeper and Prince William with A Little Magic, working with kids with both mental and physical special needs and developmental issues.

But even that was accomplished, and after tagging along with other therapy minis a few times, Lola was certified by Pet Partners in October of 2019 and classified as “predictable”. They are now working towards the “complex” rating, which will allow them to visit patients in their rooms in hospitals instead of just in the common areas.

}

Lola was great with the kids, but then Valerie discovered Lola’s real calling. “I took her in December of 2019 to Fauquier Senior Center for their holiday party. She lit up like I’ve never seen her before. She loved those seniors. She had her head in their laps, standing stock still for them to pet and interact with her. She was just in her element. I realized that she really loves seniors. We do the school visits still and she’s great, but seniors are definitely her thing. I find people in assisted living facilities that have had horses before. They get teary-eyed. They just light up and start telling you about their experiences as kids with horses and ponies. You can just see in the way they touch her, stroking her mane or holding on to her halter, they‘re right back with it again. It’s so beautiful to be able to give them that experience.” Valerie says, “What’s wonderful about Lola and getting the word out about her is that horses offer so much as therapy animals. They’re often overlooked because they’re not as common as dogs in pet therapy. But horses are just such great channelers of earth energy. They just bring that. And they bring it in a minivan. It’s so convenient. So they make that pet therapy energy that we already know is so beneficial but magnified. The depth of interaction I see people have with Lola compared to the dogs

I’ve observed is just remarkable. It’s just a beautiful moment.”

Horse Tales Valerie and Lola travel within a radius of about an hour to be at locations in person, but Valerie wanted to extend Lola’s reach beyond and connect with people everywhere. It was important to Valerie to share her because “Lola makes people happy when they see her. You can’t look at her and not feel something.” And I am Lola came to be.

Music She started with music, which Valerie considers another form of healing energy. Three years ago, Valerie picked up her guitar for the first time in 35 years and started playing again. She took a songwriting workshop where she wrote a dozen songs for practice. Four of these, her favorites, were about Lola. “I took those four songs and spent the next eight months working with them, polishing up demo versions. Then, in November, I hired a producer and voice professionals. On the album, I play the guitar and the piano, but I consider myself a very beginner singer, and in my opinion, my voice is not ready to do the vocals myself.” A Spanish teacher by profession, Valerie decided to make the album bilingual. She found two Latina vocalists with beautiful voices to record the Spanish tracks. “So now people can see her and learn about her and enjoy her music wherever they are,” she says.

But there’s more “Once I got that moving along, I realized that Lola’s stories should be in writing as well. My longtime friend Lori Blakewell, a Warrenton children’s book author, wrote a preface and a chapter to go with each song. The text in the book is more than the lyrics in the songs. The stories go along with the song and those experiences. Lori does a great

Valerie and Lola travel within a radius of about an hour to be at locations in person, but Valerie wanted to extend Lola’s reach beyond and connect with people everywhere. It was important to Valerie to share her because “Lola makes people happy when they see her. You can’t look at her and not feel something.” And I am Lola came to be.

school

Our community’s hopes for the new school year The plan in Fauquier County is for students to return to school in person and full-time in August. After such a difficult learning experience last year, we asked community members to write in and tell us what their hopes are for this coming year. So many people responded with, most of all, wishes for a return to normalcy while remaining safe. While academic success is undoubtedly in everyone’s minds, what also came through here were hopes to end social isolation and have the kids get back to sports and social activities that are so much a valuable part of their school experience. Also mentioned were feelings of gratitude for our teachers and school administrators for all they did last year to make education as successful as possible. Thank you to all who participated and made this a great feature. “What I’m looking forward to most for Lucas, who was a kindergartener last year at St. Michael’s in Vint Hill, is that he will get to meet brand new friends and teachers with no mask. These little ones that were new to the school have never seen their teachers or admin staff without masks! The thought of him completing that mental picture of people he’s been around for a year now really excites me.”

ERIN MANN, WARRENTON

“My son will be a first-grader at P.B. Smith. I hope he gets to experience what a normal school year would be like. I hope that parents will be allowed back in the schools to take part in some activities we missed out on this past year.”

“I have three in the county schools which include P.B. Smith, M.M. Pierce and Taylor. My hopes are that my children will not be forced to wear masks in school and that parents talk to their children about leaving politics and vaccination talk at home and not in the schools.”

TERESA, MICHAEL, BRENNAN, AVERY, REID AND WADE

“I have two in Kettle Run High School, and I hope that they will be able to be free from masks, but not have issues with "mask shaming." I hope that the bus drivers and teachers get the support they need from the administration. My wish is that our kids will go back to learning critical thinking, and being educated, not having extra things that do not apply to school. My kids both have learning issues, and I hope that they feel supported in their learning. And for sure get back to all the fun activities that they will remember for the rest of their lives.“

My hopes for the teachers and kids, that politics are left out of the classrooms and let kids enjoy being kids. I look forward to an even better year at H.M Pearson; the staff there is phenomenal, the principal and vice principal along with the staff truly love what they do and it truly shows. Thank you for all you have done to make the previous school year bearable and for loving the kids through it.”

KATIE KELLY, MIDLAND

“My daughters attended VAVA, a K-12 virtual public school last year, but we are so hopeful that school will return to almost normal in August that we have re-enrolled them in FHS as a freshman and senior, and we are excited for a great year for them with their peers. So thankful for the teachers and principals and admins in the school for doing everything they could for the kids in our community this last year, and we can't wait to get back to that community!”

From the principals: FCPS TEACHER KIMBERLY

“My hopes for the upcoming school year are that we continue to nurture and develop the deeper relationships that were created this past year. We know relationships and trust are at the core of student success, and we will continue to build these bonds.”

ODOM WITH KADEN (LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL CL ASS OF 2022) AND KALLYN, (LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL CL ASS OF 2025)

JOY SEWARD, PRINCIPAL, COLEMAN ELEMENTARY “I will start with the words from two LHS rising seniors (Justin Kim, Samara Brooks) “Instead of seeking normality, we can seek positive change. Let’s go back with successful attitudes and clearer minds.” Students are directly and indirectly communicating to us they need consistency, balance, leniency, leverage, and time. Let’s build back better!”

“Face-to-face instruction, hands-on activities, social events, and personal interactions with teachers are all essential elements to a complete education and social and emotional wellness which our students missed last year. I am hoping that we will resume these activities to provide our students with a complete and rounded educational experience.”

PAUL LARA

SAM COX, PRINCIPAL, LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL

From a teacher: KIMBERLY ODOM GATEWAYS TEACHER AT GRACE MILLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

What did you see last year during the virtual and hybrid school year?

In my experience, in the beginning, when we first went virtual my students did pretty well. But when we became hybrid, the in-person students really grew and virtual students really struggled. It was just so much easier when they were in the room with me.

What were some good things about virtual schooling?

“My hope is that we can be less fearful as we move toward Fall. Fear has been driving so much and will ultimately squash hope, happiness and joy if it becomes our focus for too long. Of course, there is reason for concern with COVID-19 transmission, but students get a lot of support outside the family at school, from teachers, coaches, and other students, and this fall they can have that again.”

My students really became very tech-savvy. They really learned to type well and faster so the chat feature really worked well for us. As they became more comfortable with the process, they took it further than I expected, creating really cool google slides and presentations.

What are your hopes for this year?

My hopes are that things will be much more normal. A big part of my teaching before COVID-19 was to have kids work together as partners because they really learned a lot from each other. I do want to keep everybody safe, but I am hopeful that the ability to do that will return at some point.

BROWN-BAGGING IT Send them Back to School with Healthy Lunches They’ll Really Want to Eat! BY KARLA JONES SEIDITA, HOME ECONOMIST

H

ere’s something you haven’t heard in a long time...the kids are going back to school! After a year of homeschooling because of the pandemic, schools will be reopening and that means a return to packing lunches. But what to make? Sure, there are the old stand-bys like deli meat, tuna salad, or peanut butter and jelly, but even those kid-friendly favorites get boring eaten day after day. Freshen up those predictable bag lunches. Make them nutritious, but also make them something to look forward to! These are suggestions for lunches that can be packed the night before, travel well, and can be eaten chilled or at room temperature. There’s no exact recipe — make the ingredients something your child will be sure to eat. Taste varies with age, so your teens may be more adventurous than your grade schooler.

Homemade Hot Pockets

Ham & Apple Roll-Ups

Roll out bread dough into 6-inch rounds about ¼ inch thick. Place half the rounds on a parchmentlined cookie sheet 2 inches apart. Generously top with your child’s favorite filling, leaving about a 1/2 inch border around each circle. Top with a second 6-inch dough round. Tuck the edges under to seal forming a roll or bun sort of shape. Bake at 350 degrees until dough is nicely browned. Both baked and unbaked pockets freeze well. Filling ideas: Pizza sauce & cheese, corned beef, turkey & Swiss, steamed veggies with stir fry sauce, mushrooms sauteed in butter, well-drained frozen spinach & ricotta.

Spread apple pie filling over a flour burrito wrap. Top with deli ham and roll up, tucking in the ends like an egg roll to contain the filling.

Stuffed Pita Pile chilled, lightly steamed broccoli (or your child’s favorite vegetable), cheese, and crispy bacon into a pita. Pack some Italian ranch or thousand island dressing on the side for dipping.

Fruit Salad and Cheese Slice a mix of your child’s favorite fruits. (If using apples, toss with 1 teaspoon lemon juice per cup of fruit to keep apples from turning brown.) Fold in about ½ teaspoon strawberry jam per cup of fruit to sweeten slightly. Add cheese cubes.

Shredded Carrot Salad Shred a few carrots. Fold in crushed pineapple with the juice, shredded cheese, a few raisins and walnuts, pecans or sunflower seeds to taste.

Tuna Mac Salad Cook whole-wheat pasta according to package directions. Rinse with cool tap water and drain well. Add shredded carrot, drained canned tuna and thawed frozen peas. Moisten with mayo or any other salad dressing. Good with canned chicken, salmon, tofu, or hard-boiled eggs, too!

Veggies & Dip Pack one container with nut or sunflower seed butter, hummus, yogurt or salad dressing.Pack another container with cutup veggies, whole cherry tomatoes and/or apple slices dipped in lemon juice (1 teaspoon lemon juice per 1 cup apple slices). Pack whole-grain crackers or pretzels.

Corn Bread Sandwich Cut a large square of cornbread. Split in half. Toast and butter, if desired. Spread generously with plain cream cheese or cream cheese filling and sandwich both halves together. Pack additional lettuce, tomato and/or sliced pickle separately. Cream Cheese Filling ideas: Blend one or more of the following into whipped cream cheese to taste: crispy bacon; drained, crushed pineapple; sliced green or black olives; cheddar or parmesan cheese; ham; oilpacked, drained sun-dried tomatoes; pesto; mashed black beans and jalapenos.

That God is at peace with all people and is no longer counting our sins against us. Jesus is offering forgiveness of all sins and eternal life for everyone. All who come to Him are welcome! Did you know? Hand sanitizer must be at least 60% alcohol to be effective. Add a carabiner of hand sanitizer to your child’s backpack so it’s always available. Hand washing is the easiest and most effective way to prevent the spread of germs. As a rule, hum the Happy Birthday song twice through while you’re sudsing up.

When should I keep my child home from school?

Have a Healthy and Happy School Year! C

Schools have always been a breeding ground for germs and infections, and that remains true now. School officials, teachers, and experts are working toward making sure their schools are as safe as possible. It’s important to remember that we’re all still learning and figuring out the process to work our way through.

What can I do to keep my child healthy?

While there are COVID-19-specific things to look out for, of course, getting back on a regular schedule with healthy habits — as recommended before the pandemic — will boost your child’s immune system and help his physical and mental health during the school year.

What else can I do for my kids as they go back to school?

One of the best ways to keep your kids strong and resilient from illness in general is to follow your doctor’s recommendations for healthy habits. They are not new to COVID-19, but they are more important than ever now. SLEEP: Reestablish a regular bedtime and eliminate electronics for 2 hours before. DIET: Feed your kids a healthy diet: lots of protein, fiber, and whole grains. Encourage healthy snacks and limit sweets, sodas, and junk food. EXERCISE: Make sure your kids are getting enough exercise: 2-3 hours a week of moderately intensive exercise and at least 10,000 steps per day.

What other health precautions should I take?

As always, make sure you’re keeping up with your child’s well visits to your primary care physician and vaccines (including the flu vaccine yearly, and the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available for your child’s age group), which may have slipped during the pandemic. There are 16 different diseases that regular vaccines protect against, all of them very dangerous illnesses. WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

Stress, anxiety, and depression can be elevated, which can lead to negative effects on physical physical health as well as their performance in school. A few signs that would indicate your child has stress and/or anxiety are: angry outbursts, avoiding activities or friends, becoming easily agitated, falling behind in class, and negative thoughts or feelings. The physical signs may include headaches, chest pains or racing heart, stomach or digestive problems, and sleep disturbances. To help students manage stress, keep them on a healthy routine, take breaks from news and social media, find stress outlets like sports or physical activities, and add relaxation techniques (counting to ten, meditation, or a stress ball).

Is it safe to send children back to school?

Masking

What about the psychological effects of social isolation?

OVID-19 questions parents may have as kids head back to school in person For the first time in over a year, kids are going back to school in person and full time this fall. While this is certainly excellent news, parents may be wondering about the safety of the school environment. Warrenton Lifestyle spoke to Erica Coleman, Nurse Practitioner, Piedmont Internal Medicine, who answered our questions.

34

Follow pre-COVID-19 guidelines, but err on the side of caution. It is especially important this year to keep a closer eye and be more diligent keeping home kids that are sick.

}

The mask debate in the public schools may continue for some time, but it’s important to remember that there are both positive and negative effects to children wearing masks. Keep in mind that the virus continues to mutate and evolve, transmission is still high among unvaccinated people, and most students are not yet vaccinated. PROS: Masks help limit the spread of the virus to others. Masks encourage us to continue to practice physical distancing and hand washing Masks provide a sense of security to others in contributing to stopping the further spread of this virus. Masks reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth, and help prevent other respiratory illnesses. CONS: Wearing a face mask may provide a false sense of safety and lead to less social distancing and hand washing habits. Face mask wearers may experience irritation leading to touching and adjusting masks repeatedly. Acne has increased since the start of wearing facemasks. Speech is muffled, leading to abandoning social distancing to be able to hear someone speak. Covering the lower half of the face reduces the ability to communicate and interpret expressions.

The ‘whimsy state’ of Outer Baldonia

BY JOHN TOLER

A

headline on the front page of The Fauquier Democrat published on Jan. 29, 1953 read, “Russians Rise to Defend Poor Islanders from Fauquier Ruler.” It was a tense time when the United States and its allies were pitted against the Communist Bloc during the Cold War. How did this situation come about, and how serious was it? The “Fauquier Ruler” at the center of the story was Russell M. Arundel (1902-1978), then publisher of the Fauquier Democrat, businessman, and lobbyist who came to Fauquier County in 1940 and lived at Wildcat Mountain Farm west of Warrenton. A sportsman, he was a Master of Foxhounds of the Warrenton Hunt and an avid angler. A favorite fishing ground was off the coast of Nova Scotia, where he and his friends would go to cast their lines for the large tuna found there. During a trip to the region in the late 1940s, Arundel discovered Outer Bald Tusket Island, a treeless, windswept islet off the southern coast of Nova Scotia. To provide a stopover between the fishing grounds and the mainland, in 1948 he purchased the four-acre islet from its local owners for $750. He had a small stone cottage built where he and other fishermen could take meals, drink and enjoy each other’s company.

CLOCKWISE: 1. Russell M. Arundel. 2. Outer Bald Tusket Island, seen from the air. The only notable feature is the remains of the cottage at left center. 3. Currency issued by the Principality included ‘Tunar’ coins bearing the image of Russell Arundel.

Shortly after Russell Arundel bought the island, he had this stone cottage built there.

“Legend has it that while Arundel and his friends were relaxing in the cottage with a few bottles of rum, they conceived, wrote, approved and published a tongue-incheek Declaration of Independence,” wrote Andrew Robinson of the Nova Scotia Nature Trust, current owners of the island. “Arundel declared himself Prince of Princes, and the Principality of Outer Baldonia was born.”

Declaration

The Declaration of Independence of the “new nation” read in part: Let these facts be submitted to a candid world. Fishermen are a race alone… endowed with the following inalienable rights: The right of freedom from question, nagging, shaving, interruption, women, taxes, politics, war and inhibitions. The right to applause, vanity, flattery, praise, and selfinflation. The right to swear, lie, drink and gamble. The right to be noisy, boisterous, quiet, pensive, expansive, and hilarious. The right to sleep all day and stay up all night. Now, therefore, we bond ourselves to a new nation, forever independent of all other nations… which shall forever be respected and recognized as the Principality of Outer Baldonia.” Arundel bestowed the title of “Prince” on all who caught a bluefin tuna and paid a $50 fee. He actively sought additional citizenry among his “acquaintances of caliber,” which included industrialist Kenneth J. Edwards of Fenton Farm, among others. In a 1953 interview with Esquire Magazine, Arundel stated, “Back in Washington, with

38

{ AUGUST 2021 |

the deed in my pocket and a drink in my hand, the Principality of Outer Baldonia began to take shape.” It was reported that one of these new citizens was Alben W. Barkley, Vice President of the U.S. in the Truman Administration. Barkley asked to be the Secretary of the Treasury (with no money, assets or debits.) Other “cabinet officials” included Chancellor Elson Boudreau (1915-2009) and Ambassador Extraordinary Minister Plenipotentiary Ron Wallace (1916-2008), a Canadian. Arundel’s tax attorney, Prew Savoy (1899-1956), served as Minister of State and Ambassador to the United States Without Portfolio or Credentials. Although women were denied citizenship, an exception was made for Florence McGinniss, Arundel’s secretary in his Washington, D.C. office. She was honored, but never came to the island. Arundel created the Outer Baldonian Navy, which consisted of the mainland Wedgeport Tuna Guides Association. Currency for the principality was produced in the form of “Tunar”' gold coins bearing Arundel’s image, and $25,000 paper bills. To add to its legitimacy, a telephone number for the “Consulate of Outer Baldonia” appeared in the Washington, D.C. telephone directory, which rang in Arundel’s D.C. office. The National Geographic Society called seeking information on latitude, longitude and export information for Outer Baldonia.

International incident?

“The whimsy state of Outer Baldonia was recognized only by the government of Nova Scotia,” wrote Robinson. “Its existence did briefly ignite a minor incident when a Russian propaganda newspaper published an article apparently taking issue with Arundel and his Principality.” The article appeared in 1952 in the Literatumaya Gazeta, and said in part, “Arundel established this dominion over the island… he set himself the aim of turning his ‘subjects’ into savages… he grants his subjects the ‘unrestricted right’ to tell lies, to be rude….In a word, the ‘right’ not to adhere to the ethical and moral laws which have been established by civilized mankind.” The Russian response was a typical propaganda attack on “capitalist society decadence,” and the author was apparently unaware that the uninhabited island had no “subjects.” The story was picked up by the international press, briefly increasing recognition of Outer Baldonia. Typical was the tongue-in-cheek coverage by the Ottawa Citizen, which noted that the playful, outrageous wording of the Baldonian Declaration should have been obvious to the Russians as a “spoof.” In response, Outer Baldonia declared war on the Soviet Union on March 9, 1953. This resulted in a series of condemnations in the Soviet press, finally revealing the principality as a humorous non-issue. The conflict was soon over, and according to the Democrat, “Mr. Arundel has remained undisturbed by the whole affair.” During the following years, Arundel made fewer trips to Outer Baldonia, and in 1973 transferred ownership of the island to the Nova Scotia Bird Society as a wildlife refuge for $1 Canadian. “Russell Arundel was a truly conservation minded man, a conservation pioneer,” said David Currie, then-president of the NSBS. Arundel practiced the same commitment to conservation back home in Fauquier, which remains his legacy. In 2015, stewardship of the island was transferred to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust, which hosted members of the Arundel family on a visit to the former principality in 2019. “A link to the past and new friendships forged, my sister Sally and I are still full from our adventure, still absorbing the spirit of the day, and pondering the immortal nature of our grandfather’s island folly,” recalled granddaughter Wendy Arundel in an article on the MaineBoats.com website.
