The Gators Got It Goin’ On By Jennifer Heyns
W
hen you think about gators the swampy marshes of Florida spring to mind, but did you know we have gators in Fauquier County? Not to worry because although they are often spotted out and about in our community, they are friendly and crave positive attention. Got you a little nervous, don’t I? Relax. I’m referring to our very own local baseball team, the Fauquier Gators, not the long scaly green reptiles. If you’re like me you were only vaguely aware that we have a baseball team, yet alone what their name is. The more I found out about this great team, though, the more intrigued and excited
I became at the prospect of having rising professional ball players in our community. For what other team can you hit the stands without paying admission, chit chat with one owner while another serves your peanuts and popcorn? Where else can your kids run down foul balls and have each and every player line up eager to sign them at the end of the game? The amount of enthusiasm the Fauquier Gators have on the field is matched only by the excitement they display while interacting with their youthful fans after the game. The Fauquier Gators, a summer collegiate league team, is a direct result of a passion for baseball and community of Steven Athey. Athey, who played
high school baseball as a pitcher until his arm gave out, always had a fondness for the game, even volunteering to coach his younger brother’s Little League team while attending college. Unfortunately, Athey passed away in 2005, but he left his interest in the Gators to his son, Brian Athey, and daughter, Alison Athey Brennan. “My father had a distinct love for sports,” remembered Brennan of her late father, “he was interested in bringing something into the community that kids could be more involved in and to have something for everyone to do here.” In order to get a local team off the ground Athey, along with Cecil See Baseball page 8

Baseball continued from page 6 Campbell, owner of Cecil’s Tractors, and Sam Johnson, the athletic director at Fauquier High School, established the Warrenton Fauquier Community Baseball, Inc. (WFCB) in 2000. Campbell, who had a son on a Clark Griffith Collegiate Baseball team several years ago, was asked why Warrenton didn’t have a team. When he remarked that he’d like to see that happen he was told that he should meet with Athey and the next thing he knew Athey had tracked him down at his tractor shop looking to partner up. “He was an accounting guy and I’m the working type, so it was an immediate match,” said Campbell. WFCB is responsible for raising funds for the team,
college players. Although the team started out as part of the Clark Griffith Collegiate Baseball League, they were honored with an invitation to join the Valley Baseball League in 2006. The Valley Baseball League is one of the preferred leagues for recruiters looking for prospective pro ball players and is a true feather in the cap of head coach Paul Koch and assistant coach Ted Currle. The team currently has 28 players (the maximum allowed by the league) on its roster, hailing from colleges all over the United States. Two of the players call northern Virginia home;

recruiting and placing players for the summer, maintaining a home field and all of the other responsibilities that comes with tending to the business of running a successful baseball team. After getting the structure of the baseball club organized a team was assembled in 2001. So how did we get a team of Gators in a climate more suitable for dogs and horses and bears (oh my!)? Working on a limited budget in their premier year, the new WFCB “purchased used uniforms for the team and the ones we bought said ‘Gators’, so we’ve been the Gators ever since,” said Brennan. The team’s goal is two-fold, she explained, first to provide an entertaining activity for the community and second to offer a summer baseball experience for 8
one from Leesburg and the other from Chantilly. The remainder of the team having come from as far as Kansas, Nebraska and Wisconsin and as near as the Carolinas, Ohio and Tennessee. Two of their players have already
received accolades from the Valley Baseball League for their performance this year. Shawn Griffith, who attends George Mason University, and Ryan Gauck, from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, were recognized by the league as Players of the Week the very first week of the 2008 season. As further testimony of the success of the Gators, Brian Athey mentioned that one of their players overcame great odds to become a great hitter for the team. “Chad Pierce, who hit the walk-off grand slam to win our game against Winchester, was a pitcher at Arkansas for two years and hadn’t seen live pitching in a game since high school.” said Athey, “His is success at the plate is impressive
given his absence from taking live at-bats in a couple of years.” Brennan noted that the players generally have a great time visiting Fauquier County and the WFCB does their best to keep them active in the community when they’re not training, practicing or playing. This spring the team went to Brumfield Elementary School as guest Phys. Ed. teachers for a day. The team also worked with local aspiring baseball players in their pregame clinic earlier this season and are active in the summer baseball camp program each year (this summer’s remaining camp dates are July 7-10 and July 14-17). all about “education through sports.� After nearly 15 years of volunteering as assistant coach for Warrenton High School’s football and baseballs teams, Campbell said he had grown weary of hearing graduating team players with bright futures tell him that they didn’t know where they were going to attend college, or if. The idea behind the baseball camp is to have local students interact with college ball players so that they grow with the idea that if they want to continue with sports they need to maintain the goal of going to college. In an effort to further encourage the community to take note and be involved in the Fauquier Gators, the WFCB invites everyone to watch the home games, played at the Steven Athey Memorial Field at Fauquier High School, free of charge. “We’re the only team in our league that doesn’t charge admission,� said Brennan. The Fauquier Gators are a member of the Valley Baseball League, which is a wood bat league. The majority of summer collegiate leagues allow players to use any bat of their choosing, but the Valley Baseball League felt that players should get an experience as close to pro ball as possible and so they use only wooden bats, just like in the minor and major leagues. Historic Old Town Warrenton Happenings By Amy Gable Main Street has been bustling already this summer! The June First Friday was a wonderful success thanks, in part to Northern Piedmont Buy Fresh Buy local, who joined us to kick off their campaign. Remember, there will not be a First Friday in July, as it is the Fourth, we will resume in August with wonderful oldies music offered by Ron Lacasse, and maybe even a dance lesson! The Father’s Day car show had the best turn out ever. The cars get better each year, the crowd has grown exponentially and the weather (which we can’t take credit for) was fabulous. Thanks to the restaurants that were open for lunch, and especially Molly’s Pub who had a popular coupon for the car exhibitors. The show is an annual event so you have plenty of time to become involved for the 2009 show. The Annual 4th of July Children and Pet’s Parade will take place with customary traditions. Children with their bikes, trikes, wagons, pets and parents will gather at Main and 5th Streets at 9:30am to decorate their mode of transportation, pets, parents and themselves. The parade will begin at 10am with Uncle Sam and Mayor Fitch leading the way down Main Street. The Fauquier County Community Band will be playing on the Old Courthouse steps while children enjoy an ice cream party, graciously donated by The Carousel, on the bank plaza. The Partnership is pleased to announce the move to our new offices on 7 Hotel Street, across from the Warren Green Building. A Time for Lemonade I

f you listen to the person in the street, nothing is going right. Jobs are down, the stock market is wobbly, home prices are plunging, and gasoline prices are at record highs. In the words of many, we are in a recession. What should one do? I know all about recessions. I remember well the recession of 1972. I was the Assistant Director of Public Relations for the New York State Department of Education in Albany, New York. I worked directly by the side of the Commissioner of Education. Under a two-century old statute differing in major ways from any other state, he was responsible for the supervision, licensing and setting of standards of all schools, colleges, and academies (public and private), all libraries, museums, and correspondence schools, and had the exclusive power to license physicians and other professions. I had a dream job in which I was granted a l m o s t complete freedom to contact any of the various institutions named above if I saw the need plus my being the Department’s media representative. My salary and health benefits were more than adequate. In order to receive tenure, it was necessary that I hold the position for at least three years. I had started in 1970 and had been there for only two years but
my future seemed assured. Then came the recession. The State Legislature froze all salaries and hiring. Not having tenure, I was bumped. One day I held a position on a high managerial level and the next day I was unemployed. What to do? Governmental jobs were out of the question. Gasoline lines
become a student and work toward my Doctorate? Following the counsel of the renowned poet, Robert Frost, why not take the “road less traveled?” I was 52 at the time. Yes, it would be hard and yes, it would take time but I had wanted it so badly, I could taste it. For almost twenty-five years, it had been almost as if my various occupations had been merely a preparation for that ultimate career. I moved rapidly, determining 1) the possibility of my being admitted at my age as a student for the Fall, 1972 semester and 2) unearthing necessary finances. While becoming a fulltime student at my age was unusual in the 70s, nevertheless, after promoting myself unashamedly, I was accepted. Money? Based on my ability to write, I obtained an assistantship handling public relations for the university alumni office. At a later date I was given an assistantship with the Gerontology Center because of my experience as an older person. This granted me free tuition and a small stipend. I was off and running! “Running” is perhaps the wrong metaphor. No more eating out, no more movies, no more buying expensive clothes. The term “small stipend” meant exactly that – just enough for the basic needs of life. Instant gratification had to give way to long-term gratification. Money was spent primarily on food and time was spent primarily on studying. I had no idea how many years it would take. I knew only the destination, not the mileage. Would I have continued if I had known in advance how long the program would take? I believe I would have. Entering classes in August, 1972, I marched in Cap and Gown at Syracuse University in December, 1979 – seven years later at the age of 59 and wearing

were much longer than now. People drove all over town just to put one or two gallons in their tank. In the front of my mind was the same topic on the minds of many others. But in the back of my mind a different thought had lingered for decades. As a veteran of World War II, I had taken advantage of the GI Bill and had received my BA in Psychology. My intention had been to continue on through my Masters to my Doctorate. But a little thing like life had taken over – meeting a girl, getting married, having children, buying a house, paying a mortgage. However, the day arrived when my children were grown and out and suddenly on that summer day in 1972, the thought hit me. I vividly remember crossing the Hudson River Bridge and saying out loud to myself: “Why not?” Instead of continuing to look for a job, why not once again

In just the first three years, while safely ensconced on the campus as a student, unemployment off the campus had risen from 5.1% to 9.0% in 1975. Inflation rose from 3.2% to 9/1% in 1975, the highest rate since the cessation of World War II. Shortly after graduation I was hired by the Federal Government as a Research Psychologist. I started work with the Department of Defense in May 1980. A mere one year later a severe recession moved in, described by economists as the greatest one since the Great Depression of 1929. Inflation soared to 13.5%. Fortunately, not only was work with the Federal Government “recession proof� but this was doubly so when connected with the military. My decision eight years earlier when I lost my job had been most definitely the right one. Is my current occupation as a Clinical Psychologist the result of pure luck or is it the result of a wise decision made during a time of recession? Does there come a moment when choosing education trumps getting a job? Is education important for everybody? I say “yes� whether one is striving toward a high school diploma, a bachelor’s, masters, or doctoral degree, or a trade certificate. Despite anecdotes to the contrary, I know of very few highly successful people who were high school dropouts. There are hundreds of thousands of scholarships out there, despite what pessimists are saying. The money is there for the asking. Foundations exist primarily to give money to worthy people but ordinarily they will not give unless asked. I had not only needed money as I returned to school, I made it a point to ask for a scholarship. The secret of success is the motivation. Without that, no diploma or degree can be obtained, and probably no job Lemonade continued on page 14 July 2008

Make Lemonade continued from page 13 either. Every individual and institution fits into one or more categories. In 1972 I fit into two categories. I was an “older” person and I had the ability to write. The university wanted someone with my skills as much as I wanted their degree. Colleges have specific needs to enhance their reputations. They want women, Asians, blacks, senior citizens, athletes, and anyone who can study hard and make their college look good. Platitudes and old saws abound, e.g. “make lemonade from lemons” or “every cloud has a silver lining.” But platitudes are born from generations of wisdom. Failure is success if we 14
learn from it. Or, in the words of Shakespeare, “nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so.” Dark clouds are here. Lemons prevail everywhere. My own experience tells me, however, that life is what we make it. Out of this dip in the economy will come opportunities galore, many of them in the educational field. Some people will take advantage of them and some, sadly, will continue to wallow in their own misery. Dr. Iadeluca is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist practicing in Warrenton, Virginia. Nova Medical Group Welcome Dr. Jennell Nelson to Warrenton! Jennell Nelson-Outerbridge, MD is a board certified clinical dermatologist and skin surgeon. A native of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, her particular area of interest in medical dermatology is treatment of severe manifestations of skin disease in both adult and pediatric patients. Dr. Nelson will be seeing both medical and cosmetic dermatologic patients, and has served as the chair of the cosmetic laser program at Kaiser Permanente before joining Nova.

The Best of Warrenton The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine is again sponsoring the Best of Warrenton contest for 2008. The following are a list of the top categories from last year plus some new ones. There are 90 categories this year; answer as many as you’d like. Voting ends July 15, 2008. Winners will be published in the August and September issues of The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine. 45
Aging continued from page 44 professional caregivers. Medical ID bracelets provided at reduced or no charge to seniors and their caregivers. As part of the Aging Together partnership the Fauquier Senior Care Network continues to develop resources to meet senior needs at the local level. Members of the Fauquier Senior Care Network played a key role in helping seniors sign up for the Medicare Part D at three county locations and most recently assisting seniors filing for the “Stimulus Package” tax rebate. Plans for the future include helping seniors obtain information about available resources using SeniorNavigator, a web-based resource directory. One of our proudest accomplishments is VolTran, a volunteer transportation program to help seniors get to medical appointments and other critical destinations. To date 25 volunteer drivers have provided 150 rides for Fauquier County seniors, covering at total of 10,000 miles. This highly successful program was developed in response to public input and is now being replicated in other parts of the region as a way to help fill in the gaps in transportation services. Each year the FSCN hosts a Community Conversation on Aging, a public forum that provides an opportunity for input by county citizens as we plan and implement strategies for enhancing senior services. This is not just a social occasion, although it is that too; our team’s priorities for action are determined by input at these conversations. It was input from a Community Conversation that led to the creation of VolTran. On June 19 the FSCN held its 4th Community Conversation on Aging at the Warrenton Community Center. The theme was “Celebrating Seniors in our Community.” There was much to celebrate, from the valuable contributions of seniors to the collaboration that has led to the accomplishments of FSCN and the Aging Together partnership. Chris Miller, Project Manager, and Phyllis McBride, FSCN Team Leader, told the group about all these successes and plans for the coming year.. The keynote speaker was Frank Fuerst, author of Alzheimer’s Care with Dignity based on his 17 years’ experience caring for his wife who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Referring to characteristics of people who have reached 100, Mr. Fuerst spoke movingly from personal experience about how those elements were also essential to helping him manage as a caregiver. The four characteristics are: having a strong sense of purpose, keeping focus on the family, maintaining social 46
networks and embracing spirituality. He added a fifth element for caregivers—respite—which he received in part through adult day healthcare program in Fairfax County. After hearing of the many accomplishments here the speaker complimented the work of FSCN and the Aging Together partnership, including supports to caregivers. Following the keynote speech and questions the group engaged in Lebed Method exercises guided by Bonnie Vermillion. These gentle range-of-motion exercises, which can be done standing or seated, provided a joyful and healthy way to get a break and exercise at the same time. Next on the agenda were small group discussions on two questions asking the group what values and contributions seniors bring to the community and how we can we take maximum advantage of these gifts. One common theme during these discussions was that seniors have experiences and stories to share. The formal program finished with Cathy Zielinksi from the Rappahannock Rapidan Regional Commission discussing efforts to improve and coordinate transportation throughout the region. Following a tasty lunch prepared by staff of the Senior Center and Adult DayCare program,the resource fair commenced where participants could learn about services, products and opportunities for seniors. During this portion special education sessions were offered including pharmacist prescription reviews, fraud prevention, and legal issues. All in all it was a full, informative and positive day—a true celebration. Incentives encourage women to schedule mammographies
P
ink ribbons appear on cereal boxes and women’s razors, sneakers, baseball caps and toothbrushes. Everyone knows what they stand for by now: breast cancer awareness. Even with all the attention the disease receives, it is still the second most common cancer in women, after lung cancer. It is difficult to find a grown woman who has not been touched by breast cancer, either in themselves or through a friend or relative. Fortunately, breast cancer is one of the most curable cancers. Women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer have a 95 percent cure rate. And mammography can detect cancers up to two years before they can be felt with a breast examination. Most women know how important mammograms are, but still, many put them off. The medical imaging technicians at
Fauquier Hospital recognize that some women are nervous about the procedure and they take special care to make each and every patient feel comfortable and relaxed. The procedure is carried out quickly and with care and respect for each woman’s feelings. In an effort to encourage women to arrange for this vitally important test, Fauquier Hospital is providing some incentives. Anyone scheduling a mammogram anytime during the month of July will be entered into a drawing for a luxurious overnight getaway for two at Poplar Springs Inn Spa in Casanova. Trip Advisory reviews for the Poplar Springs Inn Spa read, “A+ experience,” “great weekend getaway,” and “accessible luxury.” Happy 40th! Any woman who is turning 40 in 2008 may receive a free mammogram as a birthday gift from Fauquier Health System. Mammography appointments are available Monday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and two Saturdays a month, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 540-316-4500 to schedule an appointment. Something that will make many in Fauquier very happy has finally happened; the bowling alley has been completely renovated and is now open for business. It is now known as Broadview Lanes and yes, the restaurant is back too. For anybody who wants to look a little better (or younger) Piedmont MedAesthetics has opened on Blackwell Road with some familiar faces at the helm. Doctor Diwan and Angelina Harman, both from Piedmont Family Practice, are ready to perform cosmetic medical procedures to rejuvenate your skin. Services include Botox, Restylane, Juvederm and more. Pond View Stables has opened on Lees Mill Road, a private riding stable that boards horses and teaches horseback riding lessons. Warrenton Toyota Scion has finished their new facility and is now open with a full stock of new cars to pick from; they also have a large service center ready to take care of your car. The UPS Store has opened on West Lee Hwy, between McDonalds and Taco Bell, to help you with all your shipping needs and Bank of America Mortgage has opened an office in the Re/ Max building on Walker Road. A new shop has opened in Old Town called 3rd Street Coffee & Cakes. You can purchase coffee and homemade desserts or browse the gifts & redesigned household items that they have for sale. I am sad to say that the owners of The Bead Shoppe in Old Town have decided to retire at the end of their lease. There does not appear to be any hope of finding someone to buy the business and so they will be closing the store on July 31st. They will be having a sale right up until closing day. There is a new building in the Opal area of Warrenton that was completed just in time for Merry Maids who has moved their offices into the new building on James Madison Highway. Although the Buckland Farm Market has been working hard to get open and had some things that slowed the process, they hope to open early this month. They had set up a tent for selling produce on the weekends near the entrance to Avalon farm and planned to continue sales there until they were ready to open, but they have had to discontinue that activity until their new entrance is finished and they can open the new building. Apparently there were many safety issues involved with the cars trying to turn into the temporary entrance and felt it best not to put any of their customers at risk.
