SEE YOU AT PAUL BATES RACEWAY ON JUNE 20!

Full speed ahead! The Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby returns June 20 with a day of family, mentorship and community The Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby (PASBD) began racing on Blue Ridge Avenue in Culpeper in 2003 as part of the 75th anniversary celebration of the Rosson & Troilo family business. After several years, we moved to our permanent home adjacent to the County Transfer Station, allowing us to host Rally Race Weekends and a variety of events throughout the year in addition to our annual June Local Derby. Soap Box Derby racing is a STEM-based sport that teaches leadership, sportsmanship, and perseverance while fostering mentorship, competition, friendship and teamwork. Thanks to the support and generosity of local businesses, community organizations, government partners, and families, PASBD is able to provide loaner cars to interested racers, helping make the sport financially accessible to everyone. When I think about PASBD, it isn’t the races that come to mind first—it’s family, both by blood and by choice. Our community includes families who have lived in the area for generations as well as newcomers whose relatives may be many miles away. Racers and their Pit Crews build lasting friendships and support networks that extend beyond race day. Together, Racers and Pit Crews spend countless hours preparing their cars, discussing race strategy, celebrating victories, and learning from defeats. At the top of the hill, Pit Crews offer encouragement; at the finish line, they share in every success

These experiences create meaningful memories and strengthen family bonds. PASBD is rooted in family and community, and we are proud to help develop champions both on and off the track.

Join us on Saturday, June 20! The Opening Ceremony begins at 9:00 a.m. Bring a chair, enjoy a day of racing, and cheer on our talented competitors. At the end of the day, four new Local Champions will be crowned and will go on to

2026 PIEDMONT ARE A SOAP BOX DERBY

Culpeper Times • June 18-July 1, 2026

From racer to mentor Eddie Rutherford receives 2026 Youth Volunteer Service Award International Soap Box Derby recently announced the three recipients of the 2026 President’s Youth Volunteer Service Award. One of Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby’s own is a recipient: Eddie Rutherford. The President’s Youth Volunteer Service Award was established in 2015 to recognize youth under age 21 who have made a positive impact on Soap Box Derby by volunteering, and mentoring on the local or national level. Rutherford’s involvement with Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby (PASBD) began in October 2013 when he competed in his first Rally Race Weekend in the Stock Division. Eddie raced in 10 PASBD Local Derby races from 2014 to 2019 in the Stock Division, 2021 to 2022 in the Masters Division, and 2023 in the Super Stock Division. Eddie also represented PASBD at the World Championships in 2015 and 2016 as a Rally Stock Champion by earning the required number of Rally points, thus securing his invites. In 2022, Eddie won the Local Derby and once again represented PASBD at the World Championships in Akron,

Eddie’s commitment, leadership, and genuine care for the community truly reflect the spirit of PASBD. Sheila Rutherford PASBD President and Race Director

Eddie Rutherford raced in his first Derby a decade ago. Now, as a college student, he’s volunteering at the track. Ohio but this time as a Local Masters Champion. He placed 5th in Worlds that year. Starting in 2022, Eddie has also been honored to be a pilot for the all-inclusive Super Kids Division. In 2016, Eddie was invited by

his peers to join PASBD’s Junior Committee. Eddie received PASBD's 2023 Carol Anne Brown Sportsmanship Trophy, which is awarded to a local racer who demonstrates leadership, respect, and integrity. Eddie also received PASBD’s 2024 Carol Anne Brown and Andrew Windland Scholarship, which is awarded to a graduating senior who has raced in and made a substantial contribution to the PASBD and exemplifies the organization's mission. Throughout his years with PASBD, Eddie has volunteered countless hours at STEM Nights hosted by local elementary schools, Racer Clinics, trial runs for new racers, Local Derbies, and Rally Race Weekends. He has attended Worlds multiple years when not racing himself to support and assist with PASBD racers.

“Eddie’s commitment, leadership, and genuine care for the community truly reflect the spirit of PASBD.,” Sheila Rutherford, PASBD President and Race Director, wrote in her nomination of Eddie for the award. “Eddie found a new approach to assigning loaner cars to interested racers that has streamlined the process, allowing for better volunteer time utilization.” After three trips to Worlds and making the stage once, Eddie said that he is done racing — but he isn’t done with the Soap Box Derby. He continues volunteering with PASBD while majoring in nursing at Radford University. “My interest has turned from winning races for myself to helping promote Soap Box Derby racing and helping local families have the same opportunity that I experienced,” Eddie said.

➤ First person, from Page 4 provider of superior autonomous maritime vessels. In Luke’s words: “Thank you all for keeping me in your hearts and minds. I am honored to accept the Carol Anne Brown and Andrew Windland Scholarship Award. For those who are unaware, or maybe all too aware, my name is Luke Morris. I started racing at Paul Bates Raceway in 2011. I remember gazing up at the track next to the then uncompleted barn, watching experienced drivers take solo runs down the track, and I wondered, “What does it take to race a car like that?” First, I found out it took a lot of courage from me, a new driver, to get down into the car, grab the steering wheel, and let gravity pull me down the track. It was daunting at times, especially on new tracks and racing against fast drivers. But I got the hang of it, soon the nerves died down, and I became hooked to the sport. Early on I met Frankie Gilmore, Mr. Bates, Mr. Troilo, the Rohrbaugh family, the Millers, the Browns, and the Bevilles. They mentored me, were my leaders, and helped me develop the skills I needed to start winning races. Next, I learned it takes a lot of hard work to keep up with

stretching, car maintenance and commutes to far away race tracks, but I worked diligently alongside my dad to get the car perfect for every race. A few trips to Akron, Ohio, taught me to both win and lose with grace, and when siblings started racing, it meant I would have to share a victory or two. Later in my career, I served alongside the Rutherfords and Duricas as a volunteer in the Junior Committee. My time with them taught me it takes a lot of coordination and man hours to keep a race going, and I found a new joy in being on the other side of the guardrail. I made countless memories with my fellow members, Eddie, Jake, Titus, Aidan, Alana and my sister, Sophie. Now as an adult, I can confidently say I know what it takes to race a car down Paul Bates Raceway. It takes community, family and love to put a car on the track. I thank my Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby family for making my dream come true. I thank Frankie, Mr. Bates, Mr. Troilo, Jayme, Aaron, Mr. and Mrs. Rohrbaugh, Tyler, Zachary, Sean and Todd, Gabby, Mr. and Mrs. Beville, Sheila, Bobby, Eddie, Alana, Aidan, Mr. and Mrs. Durica, Sophie, Ava, Zac, Mom and Dad for being right there with me every step of the way and making me the person I am today.”

Teamwork at the track From pit crew parents to dedicated racers, behind the scenes on race day As racers and volunteers prep for the 23rd annual Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby, a camera’s-eye view of last year’s races offers a glimpse of what awaits this weekend at the Paul Bates Raceway. The competition was fierce

as racers aged 7 to 20 made lastminute pit-crew adjustments to their brake pads, while others narrowly won their heats by a mere fraction of a second. Ultimately, division champions like Remi Robson, Aiden Stevens, Penny Bryant, and Colt Stewart took home the big first-place trophies and earned their tickets to represent the region at the World Championships in Akron, Ohio, last July. On June 20, another group will earn their trip to Akron.
