In an effort to get all our minds off the restrictions we’re living with and our bodies out of the house and having fun, we’ve put together a round-up of seasonal (and safe) activities the whole family can enjoy. Spend an afternoon at the Gold Mining Camp and Museum or day canoeing down the Shenandoah river. Don’t feel like traveling? Have a pair of alpacas and a goat delivered right to your backyard. The little ones will love it and as for the older kids, well they’ll enjoy the laser tag party you can have delivered, too. Another wonderful way to get your body (and mind) moving is yoga. How a Yoga Practice Can Help You During the Pandemic

T
here is no question that with the coronavirus pandemic people are feeling more stressed, nerves are more frayed, and there is a general malaise affecting many of us from time-to-time. One way to combat the stress and malaise is via Yoga which has been found not only to improve fitness, but to also improve attitudes and lead to savings in health care costs. Yoga has many different meanings, such as “to yoke,” unite, and join. Regardless of these various meanings, most Americans think of yoga as a physical practice to improve flexibility and physical fitness. However, yoga also has several additional and important benefits. In addition to improving your physical fitness, practicing yoga has been found to boost immunity, reduce the risk of heart disease, and help conquer stress eating. Furthermore, several studies show that a
frequent yoga practice yoga allows you to experience greater joy, energy and quality of life. The overall result is an enhanced sense of positive well-being. With these benefits, you are better able to deal with stressful situations and maintain a healthier outlook on life. In addition to the physical and emotional benefits described above, there is also an economic benefit to practicing yoga. A Harvard study conducted in 2015 found that people who practice yoga along with meditation required 43% fewer medical services resulting in estimated savings from $640 to $25,500 per person each year. Improved health and a savings in medical costs seem like a double win we can all use during this pandemic. Yoga is able to achieve these benefits because it is more than just a workout: it is a mind and body practice. Yes, some yoga

practices can leave you dripping in sweat, while others not so much. However, they all share the common theme of having you focus on releasing, letting go of external noise, and focusing on your physical self so you can delve deeper into the additional benefits mentioned above. The practice of yoga may be summarized into four components: postures, breathing, meditation, and relaxation. The physical strength portion of yoga focuses primarily on the postures and breathing components. The mental and emotional portions of yoga utilize all four components, and this is where the ability to focus and let go gets honed. Here is where the hidden and important benefits of a frequent yoga practice lead to a more fruitful lifestyle, especially during times of increased stress. Yoga is a fantastic complement to any exercise routine you may already have in place as well as being, on its own, a complete physical and mental lifestyle enhancement practice. During this pandemic, our lives have been disrupted as we are encouraged to social distance and modify much of our active behavior. Humans are social beings and we are designed to move our bodies and interact with each other. For our own well-being we need to exercise both our bodies and our minds, which also includes our emotions. What are some hobbies you enjoy? When we are not at work, we enjoy spending time with our two young children. What is your favorite restaurant? Out of the Blue of course!
When and why did you decide to start your own restaurant? We decided to start Out of the Blue to bring what we love to the community that we love. We live in the Gainesville/Haymarket area and wanted to bring good food in a fun and energetic atmosphere to our neighbors. How does your business serve the local community? We have many networking groups that meet at Out of the Blue on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. We also have several local businesses that host informational lunch or dinner seminars here, as well company happy hours and client appreciation events. In addition, we partner with groups like the local Rotary club to host fundraisers, food drives and school supply drives. We’re particularly proud to host Military Appreciation Mondays the first Monday of the month, eight months out of the year. A local business sponsors the
event, matches the sales from the evening, and donates the proceeds to a local military charity. There is also a raffle and auction during the event and those proceeds are as well. Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. One of the greatest moments we’ve had was the day of our two-year anniversary party when we did our Ribbon Cutting. The restaurant was full all day, just packed with people who came out to celebrate with us. It was humbling to see so many turn out to show us their support! Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business? HGBA has referred many people to our restaurant, and hosted several events here. We appreciate all the referrals, and always have so much fun whenever we host an event with them.
What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? 1. Be open minded! Be willing to listen to ideas from others, or try things you may not be sure about. You never know what might “stick” and be a winner for your business. 2. Surround yourself with good people. You’re going to be seeing them a lot, you may as well enjoy their company while you are working with them. 3. Be ok with delegating responsibility. As much as we may want to “do it all”, doing it all is a good way to get burnt out and lose your passion for your trade. What is your favorite season in this area, and why? My favorite season in the area is the Fall. I enjoy the cooler weather, the leaves changing color, and all the fun festivals and events that are going on in the area.
What is your favorite local high school sports team? We currently don’t have a favorite, but I am sure we will once our kids are in high school. Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why? We have partnered with many nonprofits to host fundraisers at Out of the Blue and we’re always looking for others to work with. Please give us a call if you are a nonprofit looking for a venue to host an event. What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? My first job was in a horse stable. My mother is an equestrian horse training and instructor, so I literally grew up in a barn. It taught me a lot about hard work and responsibility. Taking care of horses is a 24/7, 365 days-a-year gig. I did everything from feeding and grooming, to cleaning stalls and polishing all the equipment (like saddles, bridals, boots, etc.). ❖

id you know that in Prince William County, it is estimated that 40,000 adults – more than 10% of the County’s population – do not have a high school diploma? And did you know that your public library has a program in place to help? It does! Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) is offering qualified community members the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and credentialed career certificate through Career Online High School, a program brought to public libraries by Gale, a Cengage company. Part of the world’s first accredited, private online school district, Career Online High School is specifically designed to re-engage adults into the education system and prepare them for entry into postsecondary career education or the workforce. “Earning a high school diploma is a life-changing achievement,” said Deborah L. Wright, library director. “By offering Career Online High School, we’re empowering our residents to seek new opportunities and transform their lives.” “We’re delighted to partner with PWPL to offer Career Online High School and give residents access to education and the potential to change their lives,” said Paul Gazzolo, senior vice president and general manager for Gale.

PWPL will award scholarships for Career Online High School to qualified learners looking to earn a high school diploma and advance their careers. The first step for interested applicants is to take COHS’s self-assessment. The short online assessment helps to evaluate if the program is right for the potential student and if it will meet their educational and career needs. Once enrolled, Career Online High School pairs each student with an Academic Coach, who assists with developing an individual career plan, offers ongoing guidance and encouragement, evaluates performance, and connects the learner with the resources needed to demonstrate mastery of the course material. Classes are supported by board-certified instructors and students have 24/7 access to the online learning platform. Coursework begins in one of eight high-growth, highdemand career fields (across a wide spectrum from child care and education to certified transportation), before progressing to the core academic subjects. Students are able to graduate in as few as six months by transferring in previously earned high school credits but are given up to 18 months to complete the program. O
n June 2, Ashley Emigh of Bealeton, entered Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center ready to have a baby. The 33-year-old first-time mother was 39-weeks pregnant and had a scheduled induction date to mitigate the risk of complications from gestational diabetes. With ongoing restrictions and safety protocols in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, Emigh knew that her labor and delivery experience might be a bit unusual, but it turned out to be complicated for other reasons including a lengthy labor, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission and a blood infection.
A Long Labor Emigh was admitted on the evening of June 2, but it wasn’t until 4:45 a.m. that her water broke, and her induction officially began. However, Emigh wasn’t experiencing contractions, and she soon learned that her cervix was barely dilated. At 9:30 p.m. on June 3, her care team administered Pitocin, a natural hormone used to induce labor and cause contractions. “My contractions became stronger and more painful, but I wanted to see if I could deliver without an epidural or pain medicine,” said Emigh. “The pain got so bad though, that I was unable to rest comfortably and was pacing around, and began crying. I received two doses of intravenous pain medication early on the morning of June 4. I broke down and requested an epidural and a catheter around 8 a.m. and was finally able to get some rest.”

However, four hours later, Emigh’s cervix was dilated only two of the ten centimeters needed to begin pushing. By 5 p.m., she was only at five centimeters. By now, it had been 20 hours since the Pitocin had been administered, and the baby was starting to show signs of distress. The option of a Cesarean section came up. “My heart dropped,” said Emigh. “I’d been so hopeful to be able to deliver vaginally. But I couldn’t risk the baby’s health. Within a few minutes, I was in the operating room. My fiancé, Michael, was there to reassure me.” Nearly 49 hours after being admitted, at 7:57 p.m. on June 4, Emigh heard her daughter, Rosa, cry for the first time. However, both mother and baby would require additional medical attention before they could go home as a family of three.
An Extended Stay Rosa had difficulty breathing shortly after delivery and spent her first five days of life on IV antibiotics in the NICU. After being brought to the recovery area for rest, clean up and a uterine examination, Emigh was taken to visit Rosa, and was able to return frequently over the next few days. “She just needed a little ‘boost of health,’” said Emigh. “The nurses were wonderful about answering all of my questions. Since I was in recovery, I needed to be in my room resting whenever I wasn’t with her, but I could sense that she was in good care.” Rosa’s admission to the NICU wasn’t the only cause for concern for the family. Emigh spiked a fever the day before her

scheduled discharge date, later learning that she had a bacterial blood infection that required antibiotics.
Memorable Care After an eventful 10 days in the hospital, mother and daughter were discharged on June 12. Despite her long stay, Emigh focuses on the good when looking back on her experience. “When you can feel comfortable from day one to discharge, you know you’re in a great place. I couldn’t have asked for a safer environment, a better team of doctors and nurses, or a more compassionate bedside manner,” said Emigh. “Even when shift change came around, and a new nurse was caring for me or Rosa, I could see how well the providers communicated with one another.” Emigh gives much of the credit for her positive patient experiences to the NICU nurses who bonded with Rosa and helped her family through a tough time. “We are fortunate that Rosa’s stay in the NICU was short-lived, but it was still scary to know that our daughter needed extra medical attention,” Emigh shared. “Even after her discharge, the team made sure we were set with diapers, wipes, formula and more. Whether you want to go with a traditional honeycomb beeswax, hand dipped tapers, or the extra safe flameless candles, there are dozens of ways to display them. Table top, in the windows, on wrought iron candelabras. Best of all, candles are non-perishable and take up very little space if you need to store them. If you do select a PRO flameless candle, look TIP for a unit that operates via remote or has a timer function. Ours stay lit for 5 hours then cycle off for the next 19.
CANDLES ARE NICE, BUT WHAT OTHER LIGHTING IDEAS SHOULD I CONSIDER? While there is only so much space that can be dedicated to candles, string or rope lights can frame doors, windows, travel along the ceiling, or just about anywhere you’d like. Don’t forget that in addition to string lights and rope lights you can get net lights, strip lights, icicles, globes,

spheres, and numerous other novelty shapes and styles. LED lights use much less power and give off significantly less heat than traditional bulbs. Not only does this save money, but they are much less likely to cause a fire hazard. PRO TIP
MOVING BEYOND CANDLES AND LIGHTS, WREATHS ARE A WELL LOVED STAPLE OF HOLIDAY DECOR. Often placed on doors and above mantles, we suggest traditional magnolia, boxwood, or cedar varieties. The choice of natural or artificial is deeply debated among our clientele, but we suggest looking into those that have been preserved in order to keep the peace. We like to think of it as both parties getting what they want. Looking for a less traditional wreath option? Try looking at wreaths composed of either feathers or herbs. You can festoon a mantle, you can adorn your cornice boards, but don’t neglect your banisters. And don’t worry about matching your wreath. It’s not necessary, and could be exceptionally difficult if your wreaths are studded with pomelos. We suggest looking into Dunhill Fir. Natural or artificial as suits your family. While you can certainly find many options for pre-lit, artificial garlands, do consider a natural garland. Wrapping a rope light is not difficult at all and may even yield a nicer final result. hey say it's the quiet ones you need to keep an eye on. And in the case of the QBE Foundation, operating behind the scenes, supporting nonprofits in and around the Haymarket area, you might want to do just that. The QBE Foundation is a nonprofit that began in 2015 as the brainchild of QBE founder Shawn Landry, Ph.D., his wife Cheryl Landry, QBE employees Jen Loeffler and Keith Lowry and volunteer Amy Seitz. QBE is a management and technology consulting organization for the federal government and defense and intelligence communities. While they support thirty-two different countries, they have small town roots. Their headquarters is in the historic

Gainesville School Building on Washington Street in Haymarket. All five founding members enjoyed working in the heart of a small town and connecting with other local organizations. Dr. Landry and his family are Haymarket residents and very tuned in to the community as they’ve raised two sons who have been active for years in local Boy Scout troops. You could say that community service is in their blood. When the Foundation began, they sought to bring the community together by helping with local events. Their first event was the Annual Officer Down Memorial Ride which had been run solely by Meg Hawkins, a Fairfax County Police Officer. The Foundation collaborated with Meg and the

Haymarket Police Department and donated the land for the event, sponsored the food and raffles and helped promote it. The event’s mission is to honor and remember fallen law enforcement officers and K9 officers, raise awareness of line of duty deaths and provide support to the Officer Down Memorial Fund. Through the Ride, they realized that by working together with others, they could connect and collaborate with more nonprofits to reach a larger audience and to have a greater impact on the community. The Foundation has also supported other events such as National Night Out, which with their help was able to raise money to give the Haymarket Police department more life-saving defibrillators. They’ve also sponsored self-defense classes for community members and events for local Boy Scout Troops. The Foundation’s most recent project is Old School Kitchen, which was borne out of the creativity of Foundation members and Miguel Pires, owner of Zandra’s Taqueria. When COVID-19 caused local businesses and restaurants to shutter, Miguel found himself in a difficult position of having servers and kitchen staff facing unemployment and a kitchen full of fresh

As luck would have it, the commercial kitchen in the QBE building had recently become vacant and Miguel and the Foundation figured out a way to pull all the pieces together. Old School Kitchen provides nutrition assistance to families and individuals who have been identified in need of food assistance through Prince William County, the town of Haymarket and surrounding jurisdictions. By literally using the old
school kitchen (hence the name) Old School Kitchen works as “food heroes” cooking and delivering high-quality large meals to those in need. “There are so many non-profits doing such great stuff in our backyards. It only makes sense to collaborate and make each of us stronger,” said Shawn Landry, founding member and current QBE Foundation officer. “Old School Kitchen is a project that we hope will never go away. There will always be a need.” There are several remarkable things about Old School Kitchen. The first is its team who almost immediately realized that food was being delivered not only to Zandra’s but to other restaurants and places where it was just going to go to waste. Quickly they reached out to the Prince William County School System, Prince William Food Rescue, commercial distributors, local churches such as Park Valley Church, community centers and several restaurants and had their deliveries rerouted. The second remarkable thing is that Old School Kitchen is run solely on donations and still has been able to provide jobs for the staff of Zandra’s. And what a great job they’re all doing. Since March, Old School
Kitchen has provided approximately 20,000 meals to local community members. “You can make a difference when you combine your strengths and qualities. When you put your heads together you can help so many people,” said Jen Loeffler, founding member and current QBE Foundation officer. QBE Foundation might be the quiet partner behind the scenes, but they have been working tirelessly in the community and partnering with other local nonprofits to make a difference. You could say they are like the stagehands behind the curtain making sure everything runs smoothly, and they enjoy shining the spotlight on others. However, no organization can do it alone. They welcome volunteers both for events and to deliver Old School Kitchen meals. COVID-19 may have been the catalyst for opening the kitchen, but they have no plans on stopping once life returns to normal. “COVID helped shine a light on the need for what we can do when we come together to help,” Jen added. E
veryone deserves to feel comfortable in their own skin. Denise Coleman, owner of Black Cat Wax in Gainesville believes in this so wholeheartedly, she created a business around it. Her salon offers full body waxing for both men and women. Coleman, who was born and raised in Manassas, attended Paul VI High School before going on to study studio art and art history at VCU in Richmond. After giving birth to her son, she moved back to the area to be close to her family. Once here, she started a job working at the front desk at a local salon and spa in Haymarket, and discovered her love of skincare. “Working there, I was able to see the way estheticians were able to control their schedules and spend time with their families,” Coleman said. “Not to mention the career opportunities they were given.“ Shortly after, Coleman made the decision to attend school to become a licensed esthetician. When she got a job at a local hair removal salon, she fell in love with body waxing. “It was amazing to be able to see in a very short amount of time that I was able to make someone leave with a pep in their step,” Coleman said. “They were smiling more and even walking straighter!” She spent two years learning the ropes before making the decision to open Black Cat Wax in May of 2019. She recently moved her salon from Manassas to Gainesville. “Two days before I planned to close in order to move, COVID closed everything,” Coleman said. “I had plans to have an open house and to expand.”

Even with the bumps in the road, Coleman feels blessed to have been able to reopen on May 29th of this year. Gainesville has welcomed her with open arms. “They’re finding me online, and everyone is interested in supporting small businesses,” Coleman said. “The support from the community has been amazing.” If you’ve visited her salon, you would quickly come to realize why people keep coming back again and again. She had a specific vision in mind when creating the Black Cat Wax experience. ”I wanted to be able to tailor each service and appointment to each person and give them more of a boutiquestyle waxing salon feel.” Coleman spent years working for a franchise-style waxing salon, and not only knew that she wanted her salon to have a much more personalized experience, but also knew there was a need and want for customized services. “It takes a level of vulnerability to come to me for services,” Coleman said. “I am so honored when people want to come back because my goal is to make you feel comfortable enough that you want to come back. It’s so much more than just getting the service done.” You would think for a relatively new small business owner that the biggest concern during this time would be to stay afloat, but that wasn’t the case during the shutdown for Denise. “The hardest thing about being closed during quarantine was that I wasn’t able to talk to my clients, Coleman said. “I know about their husbands and their kids. I feel so honored

that they talk to me about their personal lives, so not seeing them for 8-10 weeks was killer. I missed them! I was constantly wondering how they were doing.” Aside from offering personalized services, there are many other things that set Black Cat Wax apart from other salons. “I am one of the only places in Northern Virginia that offers full body waxing for men,” Coleman said. “Male grooming is becoming more and more commonplace among all walks of life and I'm so happy that I get to provide a service and environment that caters to that demand.” She specializes in hard wax, which is a type of wax with a low melting point that dries quickly. “It's by far the most gentle and efficient type of wax available,” Coleman said. “I have had many people tell me that compared to previous experiences with other types of wax, hard wax is the least painful.” More than anything, Denise wants every person who walks through her doors to feel 100% comfortable and at ease. “When I first meet someone, I usually give them a little introduction speech and tell them about myself and the salon to make sure they feel as comfortable as possible. eptember 22 marked the official start of fall this year. Pumpkins have begun sprouting life-like features in their quest to become emoji-filled jack-o-lanterns. Families are busy planning to top their Halloween costumes from last year with new, timely ideas. Tall, pleasant scarecrow figures in their raggedy clothes and soft straw bodies sit patiently in retail stores, waiting to be purchased and loved by revelers of the autumn season. The daylight hours are shorter and we’re all waiting with anticipation to see if our kids will be going trickor-treating. It has been a year unlike any other in recent history. While it is true our fall traditions may look differently now, the celebration itself is not canceled! Happiness is never canceled! We can’t stop living happy lives. all offers the best months for grilling and this month I’ve got a family favorite for you that can be made ahead and packed up if you’re going camping, or simply made at home and quickly thrown on the grill for those home-school and work days. I got the bulk of the ingredients at the Warrenton Farmers Market from local producers like Whiffletree Farm (for the chicken) and Walnut Hill farm (for the kabob meat), and all the vegetables came from Sergio’s Produce. If you have yet to frequent a farmers market, go! Your area most definitely has one and they are often open through September and into October. Before the market closes for the season be sure to ask where you can find the farmers for winter vegetables or other products they carry. Many may be in local shops or offer delivery or pickup. So, why do I love kabobs for cooking outside and specifically camping? First, they just get better with time. Make them in advance, and enjoy them on your second night camping. Second, they cover meat and vegetables in one easy cooking plan. Bring some bread and dinner is done! For the steak kabobs I made a homemade marinade that would work well with any steak or dark meat. Kabob meat is generally affordable but you can also use a chuck roast here or stew meat and cut it up. As with any kabob recipe if you aren’t using metal skewers be sure to soak your wooden skewers for at least 20 minutes before assembling.

1. Place your meat in a bowl. Make the marinade by placing scallions through salt in a mason jar and shake well. Cover the meat with enough of the marinade to coat. You will likely have reserve marinade which you can use during the week on another cut of beef. 2. While the meat marinades assemble your kabobs by placing pepper, onion and meat. I like three pieces of meat per kabob. 3. For camping I like to place these in an aluminum pan, pour some more marinade over them and cover with aluminum foil. They will continue to marinade until you’re ready to cook them.
FOR CHICKEN KABOBS 1 pound chicken, cubed 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1/2 cup olive oil 6 scallions 4 cloves garlic 1/4 cup mixed fresh cut herbs like thyme, oregano and rosemary 2 yellow peppers 1 onion You’ll follow the same instructions for the chicken, cutting it in cubes and shaking the marinade in a mason jar. You may not need all the marinade which is great because it’s yummy for potato salad, too! BEFORE YOU GRILL: Take the kabobs out 30-minutes ahead of time so they come to room temperature. WHEN YOU GRILL: Cook the kabobs over charcoal making sure your coals are hot and grey. Kabobs cook quickly and generally only need about 4-5 minutes per side. Make sure the chicken is cooked before consuming and cook the steak to your liking. Enjoy!

Prince William County rejects asphalt plant permit request The Prince William Board of County Supervisors has rejected a permit request for a $13 million asphalt plant outside Manassas over community concerns about impacts. It would have been the second asphalt plant near Mullen Elementary School and the communities that have been built near the heavy-industrial area. More than a dozen residents spoke against the plant proposed by paving company Allan Myers for the 23-acre property located at 7816 and 7814 Bethlehem Road. The plant’s special use permit request was supported by Chair Ann Wheeler and supervisors Victor Angry, D-Neabsco, and Andrea Bailey, D-Potomac. Candland opposed the permit, along with Kenny Boddye, D-Occoquan; Margaret Franklin, D-Woodbridge; Jeanine Lawson, R-Brentsville; and Yesli Vega, R-Coles.
