he holidays are upon us. When I was a kid, this was indeed the most wonderful time of the year. It’s still wonderful, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit how stressful it is, and how stressful this particular holiday season is. My mom is in the hospital. My older son is in some serious legal trouble and in order to help him, I’ve been living with him since April while my husband lives elsewhere. I have no idea how or where we’re celebrating the holidays, I’ve got exactly one decoration up, and the only gift I’d like from Santa is sleep. It’s difficult to be grateful when life is upside down but, in order to make it through, we have to find things to be thankful for. Supportive family. Work we love. Wonderful friends. I am thankful for all of it, and am particularly thankful for Pam Kamphius, editor of Warrenton Lifestyle and a woman who’s become one of my very dear friends. Thank you for being there for me, Pam. I am grateful for you. I’m grateful for all of you, too. For reading, writing in, advertising. Thank you for joining us month after month. May your holidays be merry, and your New Year filled with peace, good health, and happiness. Cheers!

“Try Something New!” The surprising rewards of “no-cuts” athletics By Tutt Stapp-McKiernan

A

t Wakefield School in The Plains, learning to take risks in an environment of safety and support is a core element of becoming capable, confident, and independent—in the classroom and beyond. This belief underpins the “Try something new!” ethos of Wakefield’s Middle School athletics program, in which every student participates in a sport each season of 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The numbers imply that the methodology is working: a whopping 88% of Wakefield Upper School students choose to participate in at least one sport, a key factor in the strong sense of community and camaraderie Wakefield is known for. Wakefield’s Athletic Director Toussaint “Tee” Summers is in his 17th year at the school and his seventh as Athletic Director, and he is proud of that participation statistic, as well as an idea he believes supports it well: the concept of “no-cuts” athletic teams. “In our Greater Piedmont Athletic Confer-

ence (GPAC), a lot of schools have a no-cuts policy. Because the schools are smaller, it’s sort of a normal thing,” he says. But he also views the policy as more than a simple matter of numbers—and is quick to express his pride in the positive effects he has observed from Wakefield’s particular implementation of its no-cuts program. “The whole concept is centered around the idea that if anyone wants to try out a new sport, they have the opportunity to do that,” he says. “They have the opportunity to, first of all, learn the new skills of the sport—but I think the deeper benefit of trying new sports is the camaraderie and character-building, learning how to be a teammate and to work with teammates, learning how to overcome difficult challenges.” It may seem ironic that a team would be strengthened by the addition of athletes with no experience in the sport—but according to Coach Summers, “that’s what makes our no-cuts program so effective.” He says

Wakefield’s mission is “to foster the character, curiosity, and clear voices the world needs.” The bold sense of adventure involved in confidently trying out a new sport, and knowing you will be supported, is an integral part of the Wakefield Way.

players who are at different levels within a sport support one another—and the result is a better team. “Our boys’ soccer team that went to the State championship game last year was a team of athletes who came from a wide range of different sports,” he says. “In addition to some soccer players, we had basketball players, we had lacrosse players, tennis players, all kinds of different athletes, and they made it that far because they all supported each other. Everyone understood the idea that, I might not be the greatest soccer player in the world, but I can give you hustle, I can give you vocal leadership, I can give you encouragement, and I think what made that team mesh well is that they all brought something to the table.” Coach Summers notes another athletically-diverse team that had a good season this year: the girls’ tennis team. Finishing #2 in the GPAC this season, “they’re a collection of a whole bunch of different female athletes from different sports,” he says. “I think their encouragement of each other, trying to push each other, has been the greatest effect for them of having a team from such diverse athletic backgrounds.”

‘Tis the Season for Self-care At the spa that gives back to the community BY JENNIFER WALDERA

T

he holiday season often leaves us feeling drained, both physically and emotionally. As we hustle and bustle through the festivities and responsibilities, it's easy to forget the importance of self-care. However, tucked away in Gainesville, is a haven that beckons you to rejuvenate and rediscover the art of selfcare: Woodhouse Spa. Woodhouse Spa’s mission is rooted in giving back to the community and spreading awareness about self-care. Married co-owners Colleen Quintana and Walt Kuhn believe that self-care should be a priority in everyone's life, but it's often neglected in a fast-paced world. Woodhouse Spa is not just for a select few. Its offerings cater to a wide range of individuals, including veterans, military personnel, first responders, and athletes, among others. The spa's services, from massages to facial regimens, offer a unique blend of relaxation and rejuvenation that benefits everyone. “It's a place where you can find tranquility,” said Quintana, “whether you're seeking a staycation or just a few hours to unwind and recharge.” The choice of Gainesville as the spa's location was a deliberate one. Walt and Colleen, who live in Haymarket, have been a part of this community for years. They were drawn to the small-town feel, the stunning landscape dotted with farms, and the tight-knit community that makes this region unique. Woodhouse Spa's involvement in the community extends beyond its walls. They support the Willing Warriors retreat, offering complimentary massages to warriors and their loved ones. In addition to this, all active-duty personnel and veterans receive a discount on any service as a token of appreciation for their sacrifices. The spa has also shown its commitment to various

community causes. They've donated to schools in Prince William County and Fauquier, participated in events like the annual Santa Claus visit where ticket sales contribute to the local humane society, and organized drives for essentials like clothing and toys for children. Inside the spa, guests are welcomed to an oasis of relaxation. The spa's relaxation room, private suites, and extensive 7,000 square-foot space allow guests to escape from the world and unwind. Their signature relaxation room, complete with plush robes, sandals, and lockers, is a space where time stands still. Visitors can enjoy a glass of champagne and even indulge in a charcuterie board, offering a perfect pairing to their spa experience. “It was a glorious couple of hours at Woodhouse Spa,” said Keysha Williams of Nokesville. “I don’t do it often, but it was nice to have a little self care and attempt to shut my brain off for a little while.” As they look ahead, Quintana and Kuhn are considering extending the spa’s hours and opening seven days a week to accommodate guests with different schedules. They want to ensure that relaxation and self-care are accessible to as many people as possible. What makes Woodhouse Spa truly special is its dedication to making everyone feel welcome. Regardless of age or background, the spa is a place where anyone can find solace, whether it's athletes recovering from injuries, individuals seeking relaxation, or those in need of therapeutic care. The spa's warm and inviting environment ensures that everyone can embrace the joy of self-care. Woodhouse Spa is more than just a place for massages and facials; it's a sanctuary of rejuvenation and self-care. In a world that often moves too fast, it's a reminder that taking time for yourself is not a luxury but a necessity. Quintana and Kuhn encourage everyone to embrace self-care saying, “It should be a priority in your life, but so many of us don’t make time for it. When we take care of ourselves, we can take better care of others.” L

Yuletide Tales With “Christmas in Other Words,” local author Maryel Stone has created a seasonal classic BY JENNIFER WALDERA PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER

M

aryel Stone's journey as a writer and her love for storytelling dates back to her childhood. Growing up in Pittsburgh, she had a deep passion for books, thanks to her mother who introduced her to the world of literature. As an early reader, Stone dove head-first into books that were often far more advanced than her age, a testament to her early fascination with storytelling. Now, she’s published multiple books that tell the stories she’s wanted to share. “My mother loved to read -- she introduced me to books,” Stone said. The current president of Write by the Rails writers’ group in Manassas, Stone found inspiration for her imaginative tales during childhood sleeplessness, laying in bed and listening to her sister snore. Those nights fueled her creativity, and she crafted stories in her mind and later brought them to life on paper. In college, her roommate had an electric typewriter, and Stone couldn't resist the temptation to use it to write a fantasy novel. In fact, her enthusiasm for writing became so consuming that she nearly flunked out of her first semester -- she became far more engrossed in her writing than attending classes. Stone's writing has consistently evolved. She began crafting stories for her daughter, creating little tales, coloring books, and other imaginative works. When her daughter started school, Stone rekindled her passion for writing more seriously. One of her notable works includes a young adult fantasy series titled "The Heir of Time," with the first three books already released and the fourth in the works. The series caters to fans of the hero's journey, young adults, and those who enjoy immersive fantasy worlds, akin to enthusiasts of Harry Potter and The Hobbit.

16 Haymarket / Gainesville Lifestyle

DECEMBER 2023

Stone also ventured into the realm of Christmas stories, and her book "Christmas in Other Words" was released last fall. She had been writing Christmas tales for 15 years before the idea of compiling them into a book struck her. Her goal was to provide an escape for readers, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic, offering them a respite from the real world's chaos.

One of Stone’s dear friends and a fellow writer, Charlene Milam, has nothing but accolades for her writing, saying, “Maryel has written a fabulous compilation of read-aloud Christmas stories. Stories that embody all the things we love about the season; the music, the laughter, the joy, the light, and sometimes the tears. These are stories that call the heart to do, and be, and see things that we don't always think of in our busy daily lives. It's a ‘grab a cup of cocoa, put your feet up, and take an hour off from the dizzying holiday whirl’ kind of book you'll want to reread Christmas after Christmas. I’ve loved watching Maryel find her feet as a published author and can't wait to see what her next accomplishment yields for her (im)patiently waiting readers.” When it comes to publishing, Stone decided to take the self-publishing route. She recognized the lengthy timeline of traditional publishing, which could take up to five years, and her familiarity with computers and formatting made self-publishing a feasible option. However, she acknowledges the steep learning curve, as every aspect, from formatting and cover design to marketing, falls on her shoulders. Stone's books have found popularity, especially her Christmas book during the holiday season, appealing to parents seeking heartwarming stories to share with their children. As for her writing environment, Stone used to frequent places like Panera for her creative sessions, but the pandemic prompted her to focus on writing at home. She's affectionately named her writing space the "library," equipped with tea, headphones, and books that provide her with the inspiration and solace she needs to craft her stories. Regarding her association with Write by the Rails, she says, “I became aware of it in 2019, joined, and found out that there are a lot of writers in this community. It can be a very alone, lonely type of job. You sit at your computer and write. [It’s] great to find a bunch of other creative weirdos to talk with about writing, inspiration, writer’s block. They’re a great group of people. I encourage other

In fact, Katherine Gotthardt, the prior president of the organization, has nothing but praise for Stone. “Maryel is a prolific, talented author with a gift for creating vivid scenes and building suspense. Her use of imagery is enviable - and this is coming from someone who writes mainly poetry. Somehow, Maryel manages to balance her writing life with her volunteer life. As president of Write by the Rails, she leads the board, organizes events for writers, manages anthology and contest submissions, promotes the club and its members, spearheads marketing, and much more behind the scenes that most of us aren't aware of. Cocktails for Christmas

Tom and Jerry cocktail batter

BY DANIEL DUCA PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN KOEPKE

A

s the weather in the Virginia Piedmont turns colder with perhaps — or perhaps not — a soft letting of snow, thoughts turn to the approaching holidays. It is time for the barman to shine and present the drinks signaling the merriments to come. Working for years as a passionate bartender, I must say that there’s no excitement quite like the fun of curating a holiday cocktail menu using festive mixes of creams and spices, sparkling wines, or special liquors to craft drinks warmed or chilled. The opportunity to mold the perfect environment is never more present. For, if properly done, the right selection of cocktails has the power to create an ambiance so honestly charming that none can walk away feeling anything but whole, wrapped in the warmth of the season. This is my goal, and I’d like to share three favorite cocktails that I will be serving at special evenings this season.

Tom and Jerry

Tom and Jerry cocktail batter can be purchased ready-made or made from scratch.

6 oz. whole milk 2 oz. Tom and Jerry cocktail batter .75 oz. Remy Martin VSOP cognac .75 oz. Bacardi 8-year rum Garnish: Grated nutmeg Warm the mugs by filling them with boiling water and letting them sit until the outside of the mug is warm to the touch. Discard water. Warm the milk separately. Add all the ingredients except the milk to the mug and stir. Add the warm milk and stir again. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

4 large eggs, separated, divided ¼ teaspoon salt 1 /3 lb. butter, room temperature (11 Tbsp.) 1 lb. confectioners' sugar (3 ½ cups) 1 /3 tsp. vanilla extract 1 /3 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 /3 tsp. ground cloves 1 /3 tsp. ground allspice Beat the egg whites and salt in a large mixing bowl until stiff but glossy. Do not overbeat and allow them to become dry. Beat the egg yolks in a separate bowl. Beat the butter and the confectioners sugar in another large bowl until light and fluffy, then beat in the egg yolks and vanilla. Last, stir in egg whites and spices until blended. Can be stored in the refrigerator if you’re not using it right away.

Bake the World a Better Place BY KARLA JONES SEIDITA, HOME ECONOMIST

Christmas is the most delicious time of the year and what better way to enjoy the hospitality, celebration and goodwill of the season than by sharing the love bakers everywhere bring to the holiday. With these simple recipes, it’s easy to invite the world to your table and share the joy of Christmas in so many delicious ways. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s get into the (Christmas) kitchen!

Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) Flan (pronounced - No-chay Bway-na)

It’s “Feliz Navidad” in Spain and Latin America with this classic custard. As it bakes, the hard caramel on the bottom liquifies into a scrumptious sauce. Yule luv it! CARAMEL INGREDIENTS

1/3 cup water 1 cup sugar CARAMEL DIRECTIONS

In a small heavy skillet, cook water and sugar on medium till golden – about 5 minutes. Pour into ungreased 8” pan. Set pan into the larger pan to harden while making custard. Preheat oven to 350.

In a blender or food processor, pulse custard ingredients till smooth. Pour over (hardened) caramel. Add 1“ simmering water to larger pan. Bake custard in the water bath till center is set to a light touch – about 1 hr 15 min. Tent with foil after 50 minutes to prevent excessive browning. Remove from oven. Cool in water bath 1 hour then remove. Cool 30 minutes more. Lightly cover. Refrigerate overnight. SERVING

Cut around flan with a table knife. Dip pan into hot water for 2 minutes. Invert onto a rimmed serving dish to catch the sauce.

Holiday Sugar Cookies & Cupcakes BY GINA MICHAK

Whether you eat ‘em or gift ‘em, they’re great!

I

t’s the most wonderful time of the year for us bakers! Cookies and cupcakes are fun to bake all year, but there is just something so special about making a batch of sugar cookies during the holidays. And for my cupcake fans, here is my favorite recipe of all time, perfect with a cup of cocoa or glass of cold milk. These treats also make delicious gifts for teachers, friends, neighbors… or anyone with a sweet tooth.

As always, a few pieces of advice before getting started.

Start by washing your hands. This is the #1 rule in my kitchen, and it should be yours too. Always read through the recipe once or twice before you begin. Knowing exactly what ingredients, tools and steps are involved will help you have a smoother kitchen experience. Then, get organized, gather your ingredients and the kitchen tools you’ll need. Remember to prep ingredients ahead of time and clean up as you go and always ask an adult before using any kitchen appliances.

Peppermint Mocha Cupcakes INGREDIENTS:

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour 2 cups granulated sugar 3/4 cup dutch processed cocoa 4 eggs 1 tsp. Vanilla extract 2 tsp. Baking powder 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda 3/4 cup vegetable oil 1 1/4 cups coffee, cooled INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350, place your baking cups in the muffin pan. In mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients, set aside. In separate bowl or standing mixer, combine the eggs, oil, and vanilla, add coffee slowly. Add wet ingredients to the dry, mixing slowly to combine. Fill cupcake liners half full. Bake until golden brown, 22-24 minutes. Cool for 15 mins on cooling racks.

Peppermint Buttercream (OMIT PEPPERMINT AND A D D VA N I L L A E X T R ACT FOR THE SUGAR COOKIES) INGREDIENTS

1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened 4-5 cups of powdered sugar 3-4 tablespoons milk 2 tsp. Peppermint extract Crushed candy canes for sprinkling on tops INSTRUCTIONS

1.

2.

In a large bowl, combine butter, half of the powdered sugar, milk and extract. Using a stand or hand mixer, beat until smooth. Add remaining powdered sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Use a piping bag fitted with 2D decorating tip and swirl frosting on tops of cooled cupcakes. Top with a sprinkle of crushed candy canes.

Where Music Meets You Musically Creative brings lessons to various locations for kids and adults alike BY SUE BALDANI

B

rian Hubler of Gainesville has always had a passion for music. While at Chantilly High School in Fairfax County, he competed in District and All-State Bands as a French horn player. In college, his girlfriend Rachel (now his wife) taught him how to play the guitar. He soon switched his major from aerospace engineering to follow his passion - music. After graduation, he combined his music degree with a teaching license and spent many years inspiring and assisting both children and adults in following their own musical goals. He taught at a private school in Manassas and for Fairfax County Public Schools and was also a conductor with the Vienna Band Camp. Hubler spent time as a minister of music and was on staff as a music and communications director at a local church as well. He was using his music education and love of teaching to the fullest degree. He was also busy raising a family. He and Rachel had four children, and she stayed home with the kids. The couple quickly realized that they couldn’t afford music lessons for their own children on one paycheck, and he knew there were many other families in the same situation. “I thought, ‘My whole background is in music, so why don't I be

part of the solution?’” In 2013, he founded Musically Creative (Creative Music, LLC) to provide more affordable professional music lessons to people of all ages and backgrounds. “I love teaching classes, especially small group classes,” he said. While his day job is now as an IT specialist in Fairfax County, he continues to teach at night, and his other instructors are all experienced, talented musicians and teachers as well. Pre-COVID, Musically Creative offered guitar, piano, and ukulele, plus band and strings, and had about 140 students with six to seven instructors. When they had to pivot to online classes in 2020, it was much more difficult, and many students put their lessons on hold. Finally, this year, the school was able to switch back to in-person classes, although Zoom lessons are still available to those who want them. “We went down to 16 students at one point, but when we started back in March of this year, we were at 25 and then it instantly jumped to 62,” said Hubler. “This semester we have 90 students, and based on our projections, we're going to be up to about 120 this coming semester. I really want to thank the parents in the community because they’ve been great.” Right now, guitar, piano, ukulele, and voice are offered, and depending on the needs of

32 Haymarket / Gainesville Lifestyle D E C E M B E R 2 0 2 3

the community, Hubler hopes to add even more options. “We also started bucket drumming and teaching basic rhythm techniques using drumsticks on a plastic bucket. That's a lot of fun.” Students obtain their own instruments to play in the classes, except for keyboards, which the school provides. However, they will also need to have the instrument at home for practice. Hubler and his staff can help guide students on obtaining the various instruments. Since Musically Creative doesn’t have a physical location, classes usually take place in various local schools in the evenings. Right now they’re renting space at Vita Nova Creatives & Coffee in Nokesville. “We set up seven pianos and three-and-a-half hours later, we tear them all down. We call it Lessons with a Latte and parents love sitting in a really nice coffee shop with music playing in the background while waiting for their children to finish their lessons.” Students are from all over Virginia and Top: Piano teacher Courtney Fetchko. Center: Owner and guitar instructor, Brian Hubler. Right: Far left, guitar teacher Carrie Sullivan, far right, Brian Hubler, and one of the guitar classes at Musically Creative.

even farther away thanks to Zoom classes, and there are several local homeschool and community groups that send kids for lessons. “We're actually doing some after school PTA classes too right now and we're going to continue to expand on that,” said Hubler. In addition to learning how to play an instrument, students are also exposed to music theory. “You can teach somebody to play four chords on a guitar, and they can then play just about any pop song out there, but they don't understand how their guitar works. They don't understand the frets and the fret boards or the notes on the fret boards.” As a music educator, music theory, he said, is very important because that's the basis for how your instrument works, and how everything in music works. “So, as we're teaching the piano, the guitar or other instrument, we're teaching them all the different aspects

of music theory that go along with them. I think it’s kind of unique to our business that we really value that.” Since Musically Creative has many beginner students, Hubler will usually schedule two beginner classes in piano and guitar per semester. One will have students from 6 to 9 years old, and the other will be for those aged 10 and up. “Our model is to group students by ability and age, and the books and materials used will be different as well. Once finished with Beginner I, they can then move on to Beginner II classes the next semester. We then start another beginner class behind them and they just kind of roll up behind the other groups.” By doing it this way, if a student is progressing fast, and the parents approve, Hubler can then move them into the higher-level class. Or, vice versa, if a student is

having trouble learning, he or she can repeat the class the following semester to build more confidence. “We can move them around in classes, even mid-semester, depending on their schedules,” he said. While Musically Creative accepts children as young as 6, Hubler said people are never too old to learn to play an instrument. The school has had plenty of senior adults over the years, and the instructors enjoy teaching students of all ages. The next semester will start in mid-January, and a list of classes and instruments is available on its website and Facebook page.
