As kids, my three younger brothers and I awakened every Christmas morning at the crack of dawn, sometimes only an hour after our poor, exhausted parents went to bed. We’d charge down to the tree, glistening with silver tinsel and colored lights and surrounded by four enormous piles of gifts all carefully separated and clearly tagged lest someone open someone else’s present resulting in fisticuffs and a toppled tree (again), and practically die from the pain of waiting, waiting, where are they already?! for our parents to get up and join us so we could each tear into our respective stash. I was seven when I figured out what was really going on behind the scenes with Santa, and nine or so when it dawned on me that not every kid awakened to a veritable toy store on Christmas day. That realization made me so sad that, from then on, I kept only the presents I really needed or those that meant something to me. The rest I donated. I’ve continued that “tradition,” if you will, into adulthood, and am constantly on the lookout for opportunities to help others. The holidays present plenty of them. If you’d like to get involved, you’ll want to read Amanda M. Socci’s terrific feature, Giving is Better Than Receiving: Here’s Where You Can Lend a Helping Hand This Holiday on page 32. There’s still time to donate seasonal decorations for the residents of CRi, rescue food and deliver it to those who need it, or adopt a homeless mother and give her the gift of friendship and encouragement. Thank you for spending 2020 with Lifestyle, and warm wishes from all of us for a safe and joyous holiday season and a New Year graced with peace and good health.

he science is clear: Masks, along with hand hygiene and social distancing, are the most effective way to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. In fact, until there’s a vaccine, they’re really the only tools we have, said Eric Noh, DO, a family physician at Novant Health UVA Health System Bull Run Family Medicine. “Masks protect in two ways,” he said. “They protect the general population from an asymptomatic or presymptomatic carrier, and they protect the mask wearer from the ambient environment.” Neck gaiters can be effective. There’s a lot of confusion surrounding masks. Neck gaiters got an undeserved bad rap this summer when some media outlets misconstrued

8

{ DECEMBER 2020 |

results from a Duke University study and cited gaiters as worse than no mask at all. A gaiter is better than no mask at all, Duke scientists concluded. Noh agrees: “No previous study had identified no face covering as preferable to some face covering. And recent follow-up studies of neck gaiters have been favorable. A Virginia Tech study showed the two-layer neck gaiter was quite effective in blocking 90% of aerosolized particles.” But he makes one thing clear – the gaiter (or any covering) must fit well to be effective. Here’s what doctors know about how to wear and care for a mask and which types are most effective:

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

Wash your hands before putting your mask on. Once it’s on, don’t touch it. If you do, wash or sanitize your hands immediately. Handle your mask by the ear loops or ties. Don’t share your mask with family and friends.

The material matters. Cotton is good. “A tightly wound 100 percent cotton mask outperforms most synthetic masks,” Noh said.

Toss it. If your mask is disposable, throw it away after one use.

Size and fit matter. “No fabric combination works if the mask doesn’t fit well,” Noh said. “There’s no perfect mask shape, because what works for you depends on your face. It’s important to choose a mask that stays put.” Cover your nose. Make sure your mask covers your mouth

}

Masks with exhalation valves are not recommended. These masks have filters that are functional only in one direction. As you inhale, the air is filtered. But as you exhale, the outgoing mixture of carbon dioxide, oxygen, water vapor and possibly COVID-19 viral particles is released unfiltered. The mask may protect you, but it doesn’t protect others.

anyone who cannot take a mask off without assistance.

Multiple layers are better than a single layer. A mask with a cotton layer and a synthetic layer can be as effective as the gold standard N95 mask, Noh said. “The tightness of the weave is crucial. The higher the threads per inch (or TPI), the better.”

Nearly everyone should wear a mask in public. The only people exempt, Noh said, are children under age 2, anyone with breathing difficulties and

Bandanas aren’t the best. “They allow for a lot of leakage of aerosolized droplets,” Noh said. “But I’d rather see someone wearing a bandana than wearing no mask at all.”

Keep it clean. Think of your mask like underwear. “How frequently do you wash your undergarments?” Noh asked. “It’s best to wash after each use,” Noh said. “You should have enough masks on hand so that when one is being laundered, you have another.” “We are unlikely to have a vaccine that’s widely distributed until well into 2021,” Noh said. “Until then, wearing a wellfitting mask is important.” It’s the most cautious and thoughtful approach. And yet there are still resisters. “At this point in the pandemic, it’s thoughtless and reckless, at best, not to wear a mask in public,” Noh said. “At worst, it’s endangering public health.” ❖

HGBA MEMBER MEET & GREET

enjoy the area in general, the great restaurant options, the wineries, and just the wonderful community.

Jessica Root

What is your favorite season in this area, and why? The fall is always my favorite season because of the weather and the great holidays!

HOUSE OF MERCY 8 1 7 0 F L A N N E RY C O U RT, M A N A S S A S 703-659-1636 J R O O T @ H O U S E O F M E R C Y VA . O R G H O U S E O F M E R C Y VA . O R G

What are some hobbies you enjoy? I enjoy hiking and camping, swimming, tennis, volunteering, and just hanging out with great friends (at wineries!).

How has it supported you and House of Mercy? HGBA was one of the first networking groups I joined and it has been so good to meet other members during the past two years. I enjoy the meetings, the venues, and just how welcoming the group is. I have brought other members in and now I sit on the board. We have hosted meetings at House of Mercy and have begun some great partnerships through HGBA.

Once a month, businesses, civic organizations, and church groups take part in House of Mercy’s Campaign to End Hunger. Recently renamed Race to End Hunger, these high-energy food-packing events feature great music, fun contests, and cool prizes.

When and why did you decide to join this nonprofit? I have been with House of Mercy as executive director for a little over two years now. I have always had a heart for working with those in need in a service capacity. House of Mercy drew me in with its great staff, volunteers, and board, and that at the heart of its mission is mercy. How does your business serve the local community? House of Mercy provides food, clothing, education, and prayer for those in need through the good works of the food pantry, donation center, and thrift store. Not only can people in need come for food and clothing assistance,

but community members can support the mission by shopping in the thrift store, donating in a variety of ways, or volunteering their time. Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. My greatest moments are always experiencing the change in someone else’s life whether it be a volunteer who gets more out of helping than they’re giving, a client who doesn’t need services any more, or a staff member I’ve been mentoring who moves up or moves on to something better as they grow. Tell us about your experience with the HGBA.

What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? Always have a growth and learning mindset, build relationships (don’t just look at the bottom line), and be kind – you never know what someone is going through no matter what you see on the outside. Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town? I moved here two-and-a-half years ago for this job. I really

What is your favorite restaurant? There are many great ones to choose from around here but I have to give a shout out to Zandra’s. They put a super spin on traditional tacos and I just love Mexican food! Are you involved with any other nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why? Other than working at House of Mercy, I am also on the HGBA Board, Catholic Business Network Board, and Lifegiving Wounds Board. I’m also very involved in my parish, All Saints Catholic Church. What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? I have always been in the nonprofit sector and greatly enjoyed each of the different roles I’ve experienced. I’ve been a missionary, worked at a shelter for homeless pregnant women, was the executive director at a soup kitchen, worked at a Catholic school and parish, and also at the National Shrine Grotto. Each one has given me different ways to grow and serve God. ❖

The Haymarket Gainesville Business Association was established in 1990 and is the premier association supporting business and community involvement in the Haymarket-Gainesville area. Staying Warm All Winter December is here and as the temperature plummets outside, we are focused on maintaining a comfortable temperature inside. This month we’re answering questions related to getting warm and staying that way. BY YARON LINETT

WE ARE LOOKING AT A NEW BUILD. WHAT SHOULD WE CONSIDER FOR OUR HVAC? That question is best answered in conjunction with your architect. Is there gas? What is the solar score? Are you interested in geo-thermal and the tradeoffs involved? We always suggest looking into hydronic radiant floor heating, but even that isn’t always the best solution. If you do have gas, consider a gas powered generator right off the bat. You are going to lose electricity at some point, but chances are you won’t lose gas at the same time. PRO TIP

the “only when you need it” nature is very convenient. While heating oil is relatively easy to place and store, there are significantly more regulations regarding the proper placement and storage of propane. Consult your supplier before getting started. PRO TIP

SHORT OF AN ENERGY AUDIT, IS THERE A QUICK WAY TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF MY HOME’S INSULATION?

I LOVE OUR BACK DECK; IS THERE A MODERATELY PRICED WAY TO HEAT IT?

It is very rare that a home, especially an older one, wouldn’t benefit from adding some insulation in the attic. However, I would be willing to bet that your windows are likely a large source of heat loss. Weather stipping or an optically clear film (applied with a hairdryer) are very inexpensive ways to address the issue in the short term.

Much like many restaurants are doing now, you can consider a portable heater. Propane heaters are very affordable, propane is widely available, and

Go put your hand on the glass. The colder it feels the more heat you are losing. If you feel a breeze, add weather stripping today!

{ DECEMBER 2020 |

PRO TIP

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO TO HELP STOP HEAT LOSS AT THE WINDOWS? Yes! Drapes, especially those that are lined are good in exactly this scenario. If possible look for a “thermal lining” as opposed to the basic option. Interlining a felt-like fabric — like that which sits between the face fabric and lining in silk drapes— is an excellent way to add a bit more insulation. PRO TIP

MY SPOUSE KEEPS BUYING BLANKETS BUT THEY DON’T REALLY KEEP ME WARM. WHY NOT? Many of the decorative blankets that have become popular recently feature an open weave allowing the heat to pass through them. Be a hero, go out and procure a cashmere or alpaca throw. They look good, feel great, and have a much higher insulative value. Wool can be harvested without harming the animal and is inherently fire retardant. Snuggle by the fire and don’t worry as much about a stray ember that may land on the blanket. I suggest a traditional Scottish wool tartan plaid. ❖ PRO TIP

Get into the Holiday Spirit

Meadowlark’s Winter Garden Walk of Lights

Don’t miss these seasonal light displays BY AMANDA M. SOCCI | COURTESY PHOTOS

2

020 has been a year unlike any in recent history. With so many issues that have challenged and divided us, now more than ever, we need something to unify us and help us get into the holiday spirit. I’d like to suggest lights. Specifically, seasonal light displays. Why? Because while we can’t change the difficult circumstances we’re going through as a country, we can certainly allow things to light up our lives and enjoy the holidays to the fullest. And what better way to do that than by experiencing the pure, breathtaking beauty of Christmas lights?

Bull Run Festival of Lights

Winter Walk of Lights

NOVEMBER 6 THROUGH JANUARY 10 BULL RUN REGIONAL PARK, 7700 BULL RUN DRIVE, CENTREVILLE

NOVEMBER 11 THROUGH JANUARY 3 MEADOWLARK BOTANICAL GARDENS, VIENNA

This could be the most picturesque drive-through holiday light show you’ll see this season! In the span of 2.5-miles, you’ll witness the brilliance of 40,000 lights set to music featuring festive holiday scenes including a giant whimsical Santa blowing gusts of air, the illusion of jumping deer, and a pirate trying to escape an alligator, among others. After the drive-through, be sure to visit the Holiday Village and Carnival to ride the carnival rides and camels from Bar C Ranch.

This is the ninth year of this gorgeous, half-mile walking light display featuring fountains of lights, small wire light displays designed by local artists, a garden of light, and the Korean Bell garden, among others. The snack shop sells hot cocoa and treats. Social distancing, mask-wearing requirements, and increased sanitation measures are in effect.

FOR TICKETS: BULLRUNFESTIVALOFLIGHTS.COM ENTRANCE FEES: $25 - $50 PER CAR; DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE ONLINE. CARNIVAL TICKETS COST $1.75 EACH; TICKET SHEETS AND WRISTBANDS ARE AVAILABLE. CAMEL RIDES COST $8 EACH.

The town of Warrenton has altered its typical parade by offering a reverse parade this year. Floats will be parked and displayed along Main Street and attendees will drive by and view them from the safety of their vehicles. Keeping in mind the idea that holiday lights are here to light up our lives, the town of Warrenton is encouraging all its floats to ‘Light Up the Season!’ in an effort to brighten the night and everyone’s spirits as it continues this beloved Warrenton tradition. ou might call them peanut butter balls, but as I hail from Ohio they're Buckeyes to me! My grandma’s Buckeyes to be specific. In our family, it’s just not the holidays without a big batch of these delicious peanut butter and chocolate desserts. They’re the most requested treat from my kids this time of year and, since friends love them too, I even give them as gifts. Once you’ve made a batch you can keep some in the freezer to be popped out whenever you’ve got a sweet tooth or need to bring a holiday token of appreciation to a friend. With this recipe what you need to know is that you’re likely going to make the Buckeyes in two days unless you start the peanut butter mixture early enough to pop it in your freezer. Once the peanut butter balls are frozen and your chocolate is hot, you’ll need to work quickly. In this case many hands actually do make light work so get the kids to help (they’re probably home, right?!). While there are a lot of variations of this classic, the ratios I’ve provided here are what work best for me. When you’re rolling the balls, you don’t want them to be sticky and by following the directions they won’t be.These serve up nicely on a platter but, if you’re not ready to eat them all at once, place them in a freezer bag and store in your freezer! Enjoy!

To start, mix your butter and peanut butter until combined and then stir in the powdered sugar on low speed until incorporated. At this point make the balls using your hands and place them on a wax paper lined baking sheet or other tray that will fit in your freezer. Allow the balls to freeze for at least 30 minutes so they’re easier to work with when you add the melted chocolate. When the balls are frozen, prepare the chocolate by melting it in a double boiler. Do this step without the kids, but once the chocolate is melted you can move it away from the stove and have the kids help dip. Using a toothpick, pick up with peanut butter balls and dip them in the melted chocolate. Remove the toothpick and use your finger rub over the hole that was created so it’s not seen. Repeat until all the balls are coated. Place the Buckeyes back in either the fridge or freezer to harden.

essirae Mantas of Gainesville is the type of person you can meet for the first time and find instantly relatable, easy to talk to, and passionate about her small business. As owner of The Rustic Texan Workshop, she creates personalized wood signs for those seeking that unique gift not found in stores. As the mom of three boys, her time is valuable and limited, so her heart and soul goes into each design. Mantas' childhood showed little clues to her future woodworking skills, except for the fact that she loved to put things together. To this day, she has never taken a formal class. Everything she learned has been self taught. The first time she decided to make a wood sign, she walked into Lowe’s with no knowledge of where to begin. She figured it out, though, by doing and making mistakes, and by trying again and again.

“LIFE WILL THROW US MANY OBSTACLES ALONG THE WAY, BUT IT’S HOW YOU OVERCOME THEM THAT MATTERS.” hashtag, a perfect quote, and the beautiful scenery this man gets to view on his hikes” to create a very special, celebratory piece. Another wood piece was created for a mom who wanted her son to know that although his life will be full of mountains to overcome, he is as big as the mountains. Mantas spent hours creating a large statement piece with intricate cutouts to assure that the work showed the love and support from mother to son. She says: “While I loved the mosaic mountains, I knew the young man would need to stand out above them. Life will throw us many obstacles along the way, but it’s how you overcome them that matters. I always tell my boys that and I hope this sign is a daily reminder of just that.” Creator, builder, quality control specialist, financial analyst, marketing and sales strategist, social media manager, customer service overseer, wife, friend, and mom are the roles Mantas plays each day. “But as easy as it is to do what I love, to be covered in sawdust from head to toe, to work hard to be a role model for my boys, in the end all they truly want is my undivided attention. I can get so wrapped up in my work, in creating things, that I forget to take that extra minute to tend to the little ones that need me the most.” So on those days, she does exactly what her sons need her to do - be present and engaged with them. There are cuddles and smiles, and the work gets done another day. ❖

Dessirae Mantas and her sons (from left), Alexander, Christian, and Nico.

YouTube was her companion as she began to experiment with what type of woodworking skill she wanted to develop. One particular video showed a woodworker cutting out designs using a scroll saw. “That’s it!” she remembers thinking. But reluctant to invest in the somewhat pricey machine, she happened to mention it to her parents during a conversation. A few days later, a large package arrived on her doorstep. It’s contents? The scroll saw that sits in a central location in her workshop. “That’s just how they are,” she says of her parents, “always supporting and encouraging me to pursue my dreams.” Mantas’ scroll saw cutouts are what set her apart, she says, from the other small woodworking businesses in the area. Her

pieces are also hand painted and handcrafted right at home in her garage workshop. And although she enjoys creating holiday designs and personalized wall decor, the pieces she holds closest to her heart are statement pieces, larger works that allow her to creatively tell a story through a variety of designs, colors, and cutouts. Clients frequently order these highly personalized and detailed pieces to give to family and friends, including their children, to show them how much they love them. One such statement piece was requested by a client whose brother overcame incredible difficulties and is now living a whole different life on a better path. Mantas incorporated elements that reflected “a new start, a move to Colorado, a frequently used

Give Your House that Holiday

Outdoor lighting tips from professionals

eeing homes decorated with outdoor lights is one of the joys of the holiday season. It’s so bright and cheerful, and this year, with social distancing impacting our seasonal celebrations, driving around neighborhoods seeing houses aglow from the safety of our car will be even more important. Make the extra effort and give your neighbors something to enjoy! Depending on how elaborate you want to get, installing holiday lights can be hard, time consuming, and even dangerous. We’ve interviewed three area experts to get their take on the best practices and products, and to get some handy tips. Kim Terry, who has been the groundskeeper at Airlie in Warrenton for eight years, takes on the project of adorning the resort with white lights in mid-November. At this huge resort, a large staff, including a staff electrician, is required to accomplish this, and the results are stunning and magical. Charlie Beaty is the owner of Piedmont Lawn and Landscaping who supplements his landscaping business by decorating homes with outdoor lights during his favorite time of year. Mike Sfreddo is the owner of Virginia Christmas Lighting and Decor Company in Nokesville where he and his professional craftsmen installers also eagerly await the Christmas Season every year.

The grounds of Airlie are magical at Christmastime due to a large staff beginning adorning the property with white lights in November. “We keep stringing lights until we run out, says Groundskeeper Kim Terry. Photos courtesy of Airlie.

Safety first: what outdoor lighting tips do you have for homeowners? According to all our experts, always plug the light strings or extension cords (use the outdoor versions of both) into a GFCI outlet, or use a GFCI adapter. That way, if any moisture finds its way in anywhere the power will cut off, which could possibly save your house and your life. Also, be sure to read the product packaging for important information, such as the number of strands that can safely be linked together to avoid a fire hazard. And, of course, only install your lights yourself if you are 100 percent comfortable on a ladder. The cost to pay a professional is not worth your life.

28

{ DECEMBER 2020 |

Is it important to have new light strings every year? How long can strings last?

Which lights are the most energy efficient? Is it important to turn the lights off at night?

LED lights strings will last multiple years, while incandescent lights will need spot replacement of bulbs or fuses every year. And, Charlie reminds us that each year strings should be inspected for frays or exposed wire which can be dangerous.

According to Mike, LED (or SMD) lights consume a fraction of the power required by incandescent lights. Turning the lights off when they aren't needed will extend bulb life. Consider using dusk/dawn timers to automate the on/off cycles of the lights.

Tip: Pre clip your bulbs with the attachments before starting, you will be on and off the ladder in half the time, says Charlie Beaty of Piedmont Lawn and Landscaping

coating on the wires, and do not set them too deep. And be careful not to pierce the string with the staple. If you do, eliminate that string.

What's the deal with white lights? With LED lights in particular, white is not always white. Simply organized, Charlie explained, there is pure white, cool white, and warm white. According to Mike, professionals distinguish them as follows: "cool" white looks icy and has a bluish hue, "pure" white is the brightest and purest (think hospital sterile), "warm" white resembles the light produced by incandescent bulbs, "sun warm" white has a slight bit of yellow, "champagne" white is aptly named, and "amber" white has a brownish hue. At Airlie, Kim uses a “warm” white, which she feels is more elegant, but which can be hard to find locally. If you prefer the hue of incandescent, there are LED versions out there that can come close.

What are the best types of outdoor lights? Do they need to be waterproof? No light string is 100 percent waterproof, but as long as water does not infiltrate vulnerable areas, such as connections between strands, there are rarely any issues. Mike recommends avoiding the use of electrical tape where strings connect; instead of keeping moisture out, electrical tape traps any moisture that comes in, which is more dangerous. Always make sure that any open female ends face down so they do not collect water when it rains.

What kind of lights do you recommend? At Airlie, LED lights are used because there are more lights per string so they are closer together creating a more showy look. All three of our experts agree that commercial grade lights have advantages over home-use versions. Their waterproofing is more solid, they

last longer, and come in longer strands. The suppliers are likely to have more stock, meaning a) they are unlikely to run out, and b) you can get all your strings in the same brand and color so all your lights are the same shade and match exactly. With homeuse strings you may have to mix different brands together, making subtle color variations a possible problem.

What are the best types of attachments? There are many great clips out there —— they have different clips to attach to shingles, ridges, gutters, and even magnetic clips for metal roofs. Make sure you do your research and buy the right clips for each of your surfaces instead of buying an all-in-one; it will make your life much easier, Charlie explained. Hot glue is also a possibility on almost any surface besides stucco and painted brick. Staples can be used, but they are not a favorite with our professionals. If you do use them, Kim recommends using special rounded ones that are designed for this purpose that will not crush the plastic

}

What other cool things can you do with lights? According to Mike, high tech features such as color changing lights and timing to music, which have always been the domain of people with programming abilities, are becoming more user-friendly. Now powerful mapping and programming products are available in easier-to-use formats that everyone can have fun with. Some are even app-driven.

Final tips? Charlie: Pre clip your bulbs before you do your install. You will be on and off the roof or ladder in half the time. Mike: Installing light strands with the lights on will help identify bad bulbs and assist in visualizing good bulb placement (such as in bushes). Kim: Mix it up a little. There are many different lights out there. Icicle lights can be beautiful, big bulbs in the ground along walkways can light the path as well as being decorative, and don’t forget the batterypowered lights for wreaths and things that are far from a power source. ❖

efore March of this year, many of us lived busy lives jam packed with professional and personal obligations, kids’ play dates, sports, enrichment activities, and so much more. And then everything came to a screeching stop. Suddenly we were forced to stay home and do less. Without our usual busy-ness, lots of us have reconsidered our purpose in life, spent more time with family (yes, you can teach grandma to Zoom!), revived forgotten personal passions, and reconnected with society in new and powerful ways. During this holiday season, one of the most meaningful ways to connect with others is by volunteering. Please consider donating your time, skills, ideas, social media connections, or goods to benefit any of the hard-working charitable groups in our area. As Volunteer Prince William says on its website, “When we take the time to reach out, we can help a child learn to read, improve our environment, collect food, provide companionship to an elder citizen, and make a difference in the world. It begins with the power of one.”

Pairing and Comparing the Classics Celebrate the holidays and finish the year with traditional fare complemented by timeless wines. BY MARK LUNA

I

n all things created, there are the classics. From literature and song to automobiles and the drive itself, anything that has maintained the highest standard over the longest period of time has earned the classic moniker; certainly, there is classic cuisine and make no mistake, in the wine world, there are classic grapes. I love wine grapes, always have, and have written many paragraphs about grapes from all over the world that have produced extraordinary wines. Many different grapes can actually fall into their own ‘classic’ category, relative to their place of origin.

34

{ DECEMBER 2020 |

That said, however, in the wine world, there’s only one real collection of noble grapes, the true classics, if you will. For this column, the last of this unforgettable year, I choose to focus on the four noble grapes — chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon — and offer some delicious pairing ideas for each. Not to be forgotten, of course, are the classic red wine grapes: merlot, cabernet franc, and syrah, as well as the white wine grapes: chenin blanc, and riesling, whose range of production styles virtually exceeds them all. Each of these timeless varieties

should be considered as well, perhaps for another time.

Chardonnay In the Santa Rita Hills of central California sits a wonderful winery called Liquid Farm. Owner Jeff Nelson and winemaker James Sparks produce some of the finest chardonnay wines you’ll find. Adhering to the philosophy that wine is an above ground/below ground nexus that produces liquid from farming, their wines display the characteristics of what can be considered classic chardonnay, the go-to dry white wine.

The standout is the Liquid Farm White Hill Chardonnay 2017. More Chablisiane in style, the unique salinity comes through from the ancient soils of Santa Rita Hills. It’s floral and fragrant, with fresh tangerine, beeswax, and jasmine. The minerality is up front, followed by a slightly creamier mid-palate with hints of baked lemon curd. As for food pairings, this chardonnay complements an array of seafoods ranging from shrimp scampi to grilled tuna and baked salmon, depending on the seasonings of choice. For a different protein approach, duck and chicken, served with sautéed fresh vegetables and quinoa, will also make this wine soar. An endorsing 94 points from Wine Enthusiast is all the concurrence you’ll need.

Sauvignon Blanc

For the last several years, the sauvignon blanc wines of Marlborough, New Zealand have been universally recognized as having the most typicity of any wines produced in the world. When you smell and taste a sauvignon blanc from that region, you instantly know what it is and where it’s from, which is quite an accomplishment given its very deep French roots. Still, sauvignon blanc, with its succulent and herbaceous characteristics, can be grown around the world and produce some of the most distinct wines you’ll ever drink. Nestled between the bluffs of Blind River, a half mile from the sea in the cooler Awatere Valley, New Zealand, is Waverly Vineyard and Barker-Marque winery, home to the award-winning family of estate grown and certified sustainable wines. Of the numerous wines produced by partners Gillett Johnson and Simon Barker, the gem here is their exotic Three Brooms Sauvignon Blanc 2019. Aromatically, this beauty has the usual suspects of currant leaf, kiwi, and passionfruit, and the expected finesse of minerality. This particular vintage, however, offers additional notes of dried

Sec Pinot Noir 2016, eponymously named for the signature vineyard. This certified organic, dry-farmed wine is both powerful and elegant, with congruent notes of earth, flowers, and big red fruit. It’s explosive in both its aromatics and palate, with a finish you’ll find only in the Willamette Valley. As for food pairings, you won’t find a more versatile red wine grape than pinot noir, period. Pick a protein, it pairs. Savory carbs? It pairs. Delicate white fish with mesclun greens? It pairs. I’ve enjoyed Evesham Wood Le Puit Sec Pinot Noir with filet mignon, lobster, baked salmon, and countless other various sized dishes.

herbs and flinty smoke. In the mouth, the attack is bright, fresh, and intense. It’s truly about the fruit, though, with both citrus zest and tropical sensibilities. It’s also 100 percent certified vegan, organically grown and sustainably farmed — rich, balanced, textured, and complex. For a wine such as Three Brooms Sauvignon Blanc, food pairings are very direct. Match it with white meats, tuna, or swordfish, but don’t forget white fish, asparagus, and complex salads with beets, arugula, and hearts of palm. From the classic whites to their classic red counterparts, we travel to Oregon and back to California for pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon.

Evesham Wood winery was founded by Russ Raney in 1986, based on the idea that ‘small is beautiful’. According to Russ, actuating this philosophy in the pursuit of greatness relies on two basic principles: obtaining optimally ripe, low-yield fruit from the best possible sites in the Willamette Valley, and using minimal intervention in the winemaking process. Since 2010, Evesham Wood has been owned and operated by Erin and Jordan Nuccio, with whom Raney worked closely for many years prior to retirement. Erin has continued this approach and the wines are spectacular. I’ve often written about my love for Oregon pinot noir, and one of my favorite bottlings is Evesham Wood Le Puit

Not every grape grower produces wine and certainly not every winemaker owns vineyards, in fact, most don’t. Fritz Stuhlmuller, however, was so inspired by the complex wines being made from his family’s vineyard that he established a small, artisan winery bearing the Stuhlmuller name. That was in the mid 1990s, after a decade of enjoying a reputation as a world-class grape grower. The wines easily followed suit. For cabernet sauvignon lovers, especially with a big and traditional meat-and-potatoes meal, Stulhmuller Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 is the one to get on your table. Twenty years ago, a new winery was built on the property. Stuhlmuller became a sustainably farmed operation and sized themselves just perfectly so as to handle the small amounts of world-class, estate fruit used exclusively to create their Alexander Valley wines. With talented winemaker Leo Hansen at the helm, Stuhlmuller Vineyards annually handcrafts small-lot jewels that embody a classic expression of both style and sense of place. Low yields of small, intensely flavored berries exhibit beautiful fruit, with subtle notes of herb and olive along with the rich cherry, black fruit, and cocoa characteristics that personify the Alexander Valley terroir. This is a meal wine, and what instantly comes to mind is a cut of meat (with a touch of fat to handle the age-worthy tannins), savory potatoes, and a side of bold greens. I would decant this wine for about an hour and insist on big Bordeaux style glassware; it deserves the proper vessel. So, classic wines with classic foods will make for a great holiday season and a wonderful way to conclude a year that we’ll never forget. I look forward to 2021 and to all that awaits us in the wine world. Until next time, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year and Happy Vino’ing! ❖

ACTS LONGEST SERVING EMPLOYEE RETIRES Del. Danica Roem. Photo by Doug Stroud.

DANICA ROEM ANNOUNCES REELECTION BID One day after the close of the General Assembly’s special session, Del. Danica Roem, D-13th, kicked off her bid for re-election, announcing her candidacy for a third term and raising money online. Speaking with InsideNoVa, Roem said she’s most excited about working with the city of Manassas Park to secure a good “Smart Scale” score on a proposed $38 million project to improve intersections and pedestrian infrastructure along two miles of Route 28 between the city and Fairfax County. She also wants to work on a commuter bus that would connect Gainesville and Manassas to Dulles International Airport. But already, she says, the trip between her district and the airport – a core issue on which she ran for the first time in 2017 – is better.

After a long career of public service and leadership, Vicki Graham, chief program officer for ACTS and longtime director of its helpline, announced her retirement after 32 years. Graham was not only the longest-serving director of the Helpline (1992-2015) but also the longest-serving employee in ACTS’ 51-year history. Helpline started as a local volunteer hotline, but with Graham’s help, it grew to become a professional crisis hotline with the broadest coverage in the state of Virginia. It also is a backup call center for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline and is a crisis center accredited by the American Association of Suicidology. In her tenure on ACTS Helpline, Graham personally answered an estimated 50,000 calls from people who were suicidal.

DEMOCRATS SWEEP CITY ELECTION Change is coming to Manassas, Democrats say, after first-term City Councilperson Michelle Davis-Younger was elected the first Democratic mayor of the city on Election Day. Her opponent, Theresa Coates Ellis, will return to city council, where she will be the lone remaining Republican on the six-member body. Democratic challenger Tom Osina edged Republican incumbent Ian Lovejoy for third place in the council vote tally behind Democratic Vice Mayor Pam Sebesky and Councilmember Mark Wolfe. At her election party at 2 Silos Brewing Company, an emotional Davis-Younger talked about improving relationships with other stakeholders in the city, but otherwise offered few clues about her top priorities. “Change needs to be made, and they’re trusting me to do it. I cannot wait to get to work,” she said.

The Prince William County School Board recently voted unanimously in favor of a new 202122 school year calendar developed to reflect the diversity of the community. The calendar includes a winter break over Christmas and New Year's Day and a spring break near Easter. Other holidays off include Labor Day, Veterans Day, Election Day, Thanksgiving break, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Inauguration Day, Washington's Birthday/President's Day and Memorial Day. The new calendar adds the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah; the Jewish holy day Yom Kippur; Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, and the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr.

TRU BY HILTON OPENS IN MANASSAS A new $15 million hotel is open in Manassas, and city officials hope it will be a boon for the city’s local business and tourism landscape. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 98-room Tru by Hilton was held in October. Built by Manassas Gateway Hotel LLC under the new “Tru” Hilton brand, the hotel received a series of tax incentives from the city and state. The hotel is on Gateway Boulevard near Godwin Drive, part of the new Landing at Cannon Branch mixed-use development. Manassas Gateway bought the property from the city for $1.18 million last year.
