NEWSFLASH! Cardio workouts do not have to be boring! Let me repeat that, cardio workouts and burning massive amounts of calories do not have to be boring. In fact, resistance workouts do not have to be boring either, but I’ll save that article for another day. Since spring is right around the corner, and undoubtedly many folks will be preparing to pound miles of pavement and hours on treadmills in a glorious effort to burn off all that winter blubber, I wanted to share this little known secret with you, and perhaps save you from another boring session on an elliptical machine. In fact, let me take this claim one step further, cardio workouts do not have to be boring, in fact, they can actually be lots of FUN! What’s that you say? Cardio FUN? Now that’s blasphemy! How can cardio workouts be fun?! Well, the answer to that question lies in that little plastic disc you may have tossed around as kid, and is now one of the fastest growing sports in the world, the answer… Ultimate Frisbee!

Growing up in Rhode Island, I vividly remember slinging the Frisbee around with my brother in the church parking lot for hours, practicing how many different ways we could throw and catch the ‘bee,’ perfecting trick throws and catches behind the back, under the legs, and behind the head. We’d play until we ran out of daylight, or until the insides of our hands became so bruised that it became just too painful to catch the Frisbee any longer. Years later when I became a platoon sergeant in the Marine Corps, I had my platoon start playing ultimate Frisbee as a way to break up the monotony and boredom of all those long formation runs (another newsflash, in the Marines you run a lot, and then run some more). Well, after introducing Ultimate Frisbee to my platoon, they quickly learned that Ultimate Frisbee is arguably the best cardiovascular endurance sport on Earth, and it is also absolutely one of the most fun to play. story short, my platoon couldn’t wait to play Ultimate Frisbee every week, and it was no surprise to me when my Marines were soon achieving some of the highest fitness test scores in the Battalion.

I continued playing Ultimate Frisbee wherever I was stationed in the Marine Corps, and I then introduced Ultimate Frisbee as part of our boot camp workouts when I started Gladiator Fitness Boot Camp in 2005. How much do the folks in our boot camps love playing Ultimate Frisbee?

Let me just say, that the single digit temps and even snow covered fields has not stopped our folks from playing this winter. (recumbent bike), why not actually have some fun and a great cardiovascular/fat burning workout at the same time?

While playing a game of Ultimate, players can run anywhere between 3 – 5 miles, and easily burn 1000 (or more) calories.

But wait, there’s even more benefits to playing Ultimate than just burning lots of calories and giving your heart, lungs and legs an unbelievable workout. As I often remind my boot camp clients, you’re not just having a lot of fun, you’re also working on many other aspects of fitness we used to do as kids, but unfortunately many of us no longer do as adults. Things like, hand-eye coordination, agility, balance, speed, power and explosiveness, and not to mention, while you’re providing your heart and body with a great workout, you’re also providing your brain with an excellent workout too, since you have to be constantly thinking and reacting every second. (Note: Watching Oprah while running on a treadmill is not considered working your brain).

Why Ultimate Frisbee? If you’ve read any of my past articles, you know that I’m all about CONSISTENTCY. In order to achieve results, you MUST be consistent with both exercise and nutrition. Like I tell my clients, you can’t brush your teeth seven times on Sunday and not expect your teeth to fall out. Everyone knows you have to brush every day, and the same applies to exercise and nutrition, you must be consistent! That being said, I believe so many people year after year fail to achieve their body composition goals because they become bored with their workouts.

When you become bored with your workouts, you cannot motivate yourself, and when you can’t motivate yourself, it’s not long before you become inconsistent, and eventually quit altogether. Many of those who set New Year’s fitness and weight loss resolutions back in January have already found this out. Now don’t get me wrong, most people have great intentions, but c’mon let’s be honest, unless you’re one of those fanatical running junkies, most people loathe cardio workouts, and for good reason -again let’s be honestmost forms of cardio are just plain boring. Think about it, running on a treadmill, an elliptical machine, recumbent bike, stairmaster... C’mon, just how exciting can it be going nowhere? Oh, and perhaps a more important question to ask is, just how effective can a treadmill workout be if you’re able to read a book at the same time? Seems to me the two activities just don’t mix, but I see it all the time in gyms.

Benefits of Ultimate Frisbee. So, instead of that hamster (treadmill) or paddleboat workout

How to Play. Ultimate Frisbee combines the running of soccer with the stamina of hockey and the cutting, jumping and passing of basketball. The game is played on a field similar to football, and the object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone. A player must stop running while in possession of the disc, but can pivot and pass to any of his or her teammates on the field. Just like basketball, Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out-of-bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for longer than ten seconds. Another great aspect of the game is that Ultimate’s rules are enforced entirely by the players on the field, as players take responsibility for themselves and rely solely on a clause in the rules called the ‘spirit of the game.’

Even after reading this article, I know there are some people who still won’t believe that you can actually have fun, get an unbelievable cardio workout, and burn lots of calories all at the same time. Unfortunately, I think some folks have just been brain-washed over the years into believing that cardio has got to be boring, if not downright dreadful. Perhaps some folks think that performing hours of boring cardio is their penance for stuffing their pie-holes with way too much food, or because they’ve totally blown off exercising for the past 3 months. Not sure what the reason is, but I do know some folks just won’t change. In the search for emotional connection,

While communication issues or conflict styles are usually what couples call my office to talk about, the most common underlying issue is a lack of or deteriorating emotional connection. That sense that we are in a close, safe relationship is crucial to the success of every relationship. Yet that close bond that we all seek is often very elusive. In fact understanding exactly what we mean when we say things like “feeling connected,” “being close,” or “emotionally present” has been difficult for therapists and researchers to define until recently.

What couples are seeking, according to Sue Johnson and many other couples therapists, is a secure attachment with one another.

This idea of attachment, or adult attachment style, comes from decades of research with parents and children, trying to understand the connection that happens with an infant and their primary caregivers. While we have often left these concepts of emotional safety and the importance of physical touch to the arena of child development, more and more research is revealing how these same principles may be at the root of our adult relationships as well.

So what does all this talk about attachment mean for you and your spouse? Well first it means that there is a scientific reason that sometimes your fights dissolve into a desperate plea by one or the other to be heard; and those never-ending battles about “silly” things may in fact be masking a primal need for emotional responsiveness. Adult attachment theory and the schools of couple’s therapy born out of it could fill many books; there are some basic concepts that you can implement today to start reconnecting with your spouse.

Ultimately attachment is about feeling confident in our partner’s ability to be “there for us” when we need them. In her book, Hold

Are you engaged in this relationship?

Her acronym, A.R.E., addresses the most basic foundation of our intimate relationships- Are you always going to be there for me? Often this question is dismissed by both partners as needy or dependent but attachment theory teaches us that our need for loving connection with another person is not a character flaw or weakness. It is a primal desire like our need for food and shelter and one of the most powerful drives behind our behavior. Think about it for a moment. How many times have you felt an almost desperate need for your partner to pay attention to you or respond to what may on the surface seem like a mundane request? Have you ever found yourselves going round and round in arguments about an issue that when emotions have calmed you both agree is silly yet in the moment neither of you could relinquish your position? These may have been moments that what was really at stake was your sense of secure connection to one another. Unfortunately, couples often overlook the emotional context of their conversations and miss the opportunity to strengthen the love between them. But by answering these questions about yourself and your partners, you can begin to unravel the deeper meaning behind that fight about the laundry or begin to articulate the vague sense of disconnect that may be creeping into your relationship right now.

Accessibility is the sense that when you need your partner (or they need you) that you are available to them. For some people it is easier to think about accessibility as priority. It is not enough to be home at 5 o’clock every night or scheduling date night once week. While physical access is vital, for many couples it is not enough and often contributes to confusion and conflict.

Maybe your wife says you never have time for me anymore.

Your response is likely to be something along the lines of “I was home early every day this week” or “we went out to the movies just last weekend.” While these answers address the content of her message, they also may spark an argument because they probably missed the emotional context- she needs you. Being accessible means that it is easy for your partner to get and keep your attention when they need it. So while coming home early every night is wonderful, it may be that 15 minutes Haymarket Lifestyle

of undivided attention at the end of the night is even more important.

at least one of you will continue to push for more conflict as a way to get some level of interaction.

It’s important to keep in mind that while it is easy to remember these characteristics in order they are not a prescribed stepby-step plan; in fact one way to hear your partner’s request for accessibility is by being more responsive. A Responsive partner is one that works to identify and respond to the emotional message of the conversation. In the above example if the husband could have responded to the wife’s plea that they “don’t spend enough time together” by responding to her emotional plea for connection, a negative cycle of conflict could likely be averted. Sometimes being responsive is easy, such as when your partner is crying and you offer comfort in the form of reassurance and a hug.

Which leads us to understanding how to be Engaged in our relationships. Engagement is often referred to as being emotionally present or connected. Not always easy to articulate, this is the feeling that nearly everyone is seeking in their close relationships. It is the sense of synchronicity between you and your partner- moving emotionally in ways that compliment and support one another. While there will be moments of conflict and disconnect, when you are engaged with each other these moments are easily resolved and working through them can create deeper levels of connection and trust.

Other times it can be tricky. You may be feeling distant already which can lead either of you to pick a fight or otherwise bait each other into some response. Much like children’s need for attention, our need as adults of safe emotional connection is incredibly powerful which means that sometimes any response, even a negative one, is better than nothing. The next time you find that you or your partner seems to be looking for a reason to fight or purposely pushing the other’s buttons, stop and ask yourself whether you have been responsive lately.

Responsiveness is not mind-reading, you are not expected to miraculously understand every situation, rather it is a willingness to ask questions and demonstrate a desire to be involved with your partner on an emotional level. Without that it is likely that

The most fascinating part of emotional engagement, and truly all three of these processes together, is that the more you each feel supported and connected the less unsure and needy you become. Much like a toddler who trusts their mother to be there when they need her, as a couple you can learn to rely on one another in a way that allows you to confidently go out into the world and continue to grow and develop as individuals.

Portici Plantation, in the ‘Eye of the Storm’

Part 2: In its final years, the historic home witnessed great tragedy

Part 1 described the early history of Portici, on the Manassas Battlefield southeast of Henry Hill.

In 1855, Francis Waring “Frank” Lewis (1822-1913) and his wife Fannie (1830-1899) acquired Portici. They were forced to leave their home just before the First Battle of Manassas in July 1861.

The fighting around Portici during the First Battle of Manassas was as bad as Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard had predicted it would be. Frank Lewis returned home after taking his family to Snow Hill near Haymarket, and was an eyewitness to the fighting, and the aftermath.

At first, the Union soldiers held the line, but when horsemen of Confederate Gen. Beverly Robinson’s Brigade joined the fight, the

The First Battle of Manassas was a Confederate victory, and once the shooting stopped, the main house at Portici became a field hospital under Dr. John Thompson Darby, chief surgeon of Gen. Wade Hampton’s Legion. Dr. Charles Carroll Gray, a captured Union doctor, assisted him.

Both Confederate and Union wounded were brought to the house, and Portici’s kitchen and hallways became operating rooms. Medical supplies were quickly exhausted, and the house and outbuildings were soon filled with the wounded, dying and dead.

During the day, a single shell struck the house, hitting the room where the Lewis’s valuables were stored.

Frank Lewis witnessed the carnage, and it would have a lasting effect on him.

would sit up with him and listen to him reminisce about his experiences during the Civil War. He told young Bob that he had actually seen a man’s leg sawed off and thrown out the window at Portici, when it was being used as a hospital. The man was given some whiskey and a large cigar, as they were entirely out of anesthesia.”

Mrs. Fanny Ricketts, whose husband, Union Capt. James B. Ricketts, was wounded in the thigh and brought to Portici, wrote a personal account of the conditions she witnessed there. Originally told that her husband had been killed, she later learned that he had survived. Somehow, Mrs. Ricketts made her way through the lines to Portici, arriving on July 26, 1861.

“Oh, no words can describe the horrors around me. Two men dead and covered with blood are carried down the stairs as I waited to let them pass.

On a table in the open hall a man was undergoing the amputation of his leg,” she wrote. “At the foot of the stairs, two bloody legs lay, and through all I went to my husband…”

The scene when she reached the room where Capt. Ricketts was lying was equally horrendous. “In the opposite room are ten dying or wounded men. Next to us are three, one with a gangrenous thigh, where 14

his leg was amputated. Blood runs on the floor, the smell is dreadful…I have asked for a fan, for the flies are terrible.

No one can dream of the sickening horrors of this place. ” On Aug. 2, 1861, Capt. Ricketts was deemed well enough to travel, and accompanied by his wife, was transferred to a makeshift hospital in the Richmond Poorhouse. He was later moved to a Confederate prison, where he remained until exchanged in December 1861.

Once the wounded were cleared out, Portici stood empty until the spring of 1862, when Federal forces returned to the area. While on a tour of the Manassas battlefield, officers of the 20th New York State Militia under Lt. Col. Theodore Gates occupied the house during a rainstorm on the night of March 14, 1862.

Col. Gates described the house at the time as “…a spacious building with large rooms above and below, and vast fireplaces; into these were piled cartloads of wood, and roaring fires, regardless of insurance, soon gave us warmth and light, while our savory supper smoked on improvised tables.”

Col. Gates and his men returned to Alexandria the next day, “…leaving rousing fires behind.”

His property in disputed territory and his family relocated to safety in Loudoun County, Frank Lewis enlisted in Co. B of the 8th Virginia Army. “Because of his experience in superintending a pack train to California in 1849, he was selected by the Confederacy to superintend the packing of grain and general supplies between Manassas and Bacon Race,” according to Mrs. Nelson.

Sometime before the summer of 1862, four unknown civilians who were not members of the Lewis family occupied the main house at Portici, and were there during the Second Battle of Manassas, Aug. 29-30, 1862.

This time, Portici was taken over as the headquarters of a Union officer, Maj. Gen. Samuel P. Heintzelman, commander of the III Corps. He and his staff took up a position at Portici after moving from nearby Island Ford on Bull Run. Pvt. Robert Knox Sneden (18321918) served in the Headquarter Teams of III Corps, and was present at Portici, and wrote about his experiences there in The Eye of the Storm (published in 2000). Following is account of the events of the afternoon of Aug. 30, 1862, after the battle was lost, and Gen. Heintzelman and his staff had left Portici: “I got to Ball’s (the Lewis) house about 4:30 p.m., while our guard and continued on page16

property. In addition to the physical losses, there were other changes: slave labor was no more, and Virginia would be under post-war Reconstruction until 1870.

Frank W. Lewis built a modest frame house down the hill and east of the burned mansion (“Portici II”) in 1876, using bricks and whatever else he could salvage. However, true to tradition, this house too burned in the late 1870s. Another house (“Portici III”) was built on the site, and would survive until the late 20th century.

continued from page 14 teams were soon ready to move, as ordered, to Centreville. This was a pretty good farmhouse with verandah. It stood on a hill among barns and other outhouses. One old woman and three young women were there, not a man or Negro on the premises. The old woman was ‘tongue-lashing’ our guard for taking the remnant of what was left of her chickens, and our wagon guard had appropriated two young pigs, on the grounds that they were ‘secesh (secessionist).’

“I went into the house and found it pretty well furnished. I made myself at home for half an hour, and had to take a vituperous tongue-wagging from the old dame myself. Behind some crockery in an open cupboard I saw a pistol. This I confiscated, and found four barrels loaded.

The women were furious, but I only laughed at them.”

About an hour later, the Confederates attacked in force, advancing on Bald Hill and Henry Hill, near Portici. Sneden’s wagons were ordered to retreat eastward.

“The shells were bursting in the air above the woods, while the discharges of musketry and artillery were incessant, and terrible in volume. At 6 p.m., long lines 16

of wagons and ambulances began to file past towards Centreville, while wounded stragglers came from all points across fields en route for the same place. I watched the smoke of battle, which came nearer every minute.”

Family tradition holds that the Pennsylvania Bucktails burned Portici during the Second Battle of Manassas.

But it is known that the house was still standing in mid-October 1863, when it was used as a field hospital for the 9th Virginia Cavalry, following skirmishes in the area after the Battle of Bristoe Station. It is likely that the house burned soon afterward.

“When the end came, one can only imagine those broad brick pillars, struggling to support the flaming structure that all came crashing down,” wrote Edmund Raus in “Voices of Portici,” published in Vol. XIV of Civil War magazine. “The charred remains of Portici were etched against the skyline until time smoothed the earth, and the memories were forgotten.”

After an absence of nearly four years, the Lewis family returned to Portici to face the destruction of their

Fannie Lewis died in 1899, and Frank remained at Portici III until his death in 1913, cared for by youngest daughter Rosa Belle Lewis.

Sons Robert Lee Lewis (1864-1938) and F. Warner Lewis stayed on to run the farm.

Upon Frank W. Lewis’ death, his son Robert Lee Lewis inherited 75 acres and the house; 60 acres went to the children of his late sister, Mary Stuart Lewis Pugh. About 110 acres had previously been given to Frank’s niece, Fannie Tasker Lewis Lee, as a wedding present. The remainder was divided between F. Warner and Rosa Lee Lewis.

Robert Lee Lewis later purchased 50 acres from his sister Mary’s children, as well as the property left to F. Warner Lewis, bringing the holdings of his Portici Farm to 178 acres.

During the 1930s, Portici was surveyed as part of a Works Progress Administration project. By then, all that remained of the original main house were foundation stones.

However, working from a photo and drawings of the mansion, it was determined that it was a substantial structure with ten rooms and brick gables. “One can only imagine its beauty, for all the old Carter mansions in this section were fine, such as Sudley House, Red Hill, etc.,” according to the survey. “From the lines of the foundation, one can see that it was of the generous proportions of the day for continued on page18 Haymarket Lifestyle

Robert Lee Lewis showed the researcher the locations of the slave quarters, icehouse and other outbuildings, as well as the Ball family cemetery, which was described as overgrown with lilac and other shrubs, and the gravestones covered with lichen.

Portici III was described as “Two stories, with seven rooms, built of wood frame and cinderblock… with wooden floors, plaster walls and a metal roof.”

Robert Lee Lewis continued to live at Portici III and farmed the property until his death in 1938. It then became the property of his son, Robert Lee “Bob” Lewis Jr., who held the property until ill health forced him to sell in 1950, ending more than two centuries of ownership by generations of the Carter, Ball and Lewis families.

Thomas Pearson, was suffering from poor health, and the profit in running a dairy farm was no longer there.

Aware of the historic value of the property, Mr. Wheeler sold Portici to the National Park Foundation in 1976. The foundation held the property until 1985, when the Department of the Interior came up with the necessary funding to purchase the tract under the terms of the Battlefield Expansion Act. Starting in 1986, extensive archeological investigations were conducted on the site as part of the1983 Manassas National Battlefield General Management Plan.

The purchaser was William H. Wheeler, who operated a dairy farm at Portici until 1973. According to an article in the July 25, 1973 issue of the Manassas Journal-Messenger, the construction of I-66 took 26 acres of Wheeler’s farm, and cut off another ten acres that he needed for his herd.

In “Portici: Portrait of a Middling Plantation in Piedmont Virginia,” written

by Kathleen A. Parker and Jacqueline L. Hernigle for the Manassas Battlefield Park (1990), it was noted that, “Portici’s frame mansion house, with its massive exterior-end brick parapetted chimneys, and full English basement, is a model of permanence. The sandstone foundation, excluding additions, measures 37 feet square. The house had at least 12 individual rooms, an attic and two full passageways. The domestic slaves used at least one, and possibly four in the cellar.”

Although he managed to acquire more land and built houses on the isolated ten acres, his business partner,

Portici III that was part of the Wheeler acquisition. The Northern Virginia Association for History Inc. opposed the razing of the house, claiming that it was “…part of the 226-year history of one family and the land they owned… and could help provide insight into how families coped after the Civil War.” The house had been unoccupied for several years, and the cost to stabilize it was estimated at $40,000 – money the NPS needed to spend elsewhere.

In addition, park officials believed that Portici III had no architectural significance, and because it was built about 1879, it lacked any real association with the Civil War, “…which is the primary purpose of the Manassas National Battlefield Park,” according to an article in the July 11, 1994 edition of the Potomac News.

The suggestion was made that other historical societies could raise the funds needed to save the house, but this did not come to pass.

“Today, the barren ridge makes no statement, and the winds that sweep across it carry no voices of the past,” wrote Mr. Raus in “Voices of Portici.” “Where bugle calls split the air and sabers flashed in the evening sunlight, modern traffic hums along a superhighway.”

Battlefield High— Celebrating A Decade And hopes for many more years to come

Battlefield High School will have been open for a decade this year. And, although the time period can feel relatively brief, ten years of existing can be quite an accomplishment. For years, Battlefield has had a top notch academic program, stellar athletic department, a majestic musical department, and a state of the art IT program. All of which houses a phenomenal population of people all striving to accomplish their largest and most dramatic goals, either as teachers, athletic administrators, heads of departments, counselors or students.

By Lauren Ainslie As the recruiters from Towson and George Mason fight for Battlefield’s basketball star to choose their school, in the end, the last offer, seems to be the best fit for junior Misha Jones.

Jones has committed to play basketball for The College of William and Mary, starting in 2015. Jones is one of the star players on the Bobcat varsity squad. Jones plays shooting guard and wears number 22. 22 has been her lucky number since the eighth grade; it was also her dad’s number in basketball, so the number has a lot of meaning in the Jones family.

Jones’ commitment is a surprise considering she is barely halfway through her junior year, one and a half years away from graduating. “I feel extremely relieved [that I have committed early], my eyes are opened to all the opportunities I could have at William and Mary,” Jones commented.

“Once we got the offer from W&M, I asked, ‘what are we waiting for?’ We felt that William and Mary is academically a great school, obviously, but it is in a quality basketball league with a coach we believe in, and where Misha can make a difference,” Jones’ father Michael Jones commented.

Jones is more than worthy of playing for a team like William and Mary. Last year Jones was selected to try out for the U16 National Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado 20

Springs. Jones did an outstanding job there, making it past three brutal cuts during the selection process. Last season Jones was on the All-Cedar Run District Team and on the Second-Team AllNorthwest Region Honors. This season Jones has a 14.6 points per game average.

“Her commitment proves to everyone how much time and effort she has really put into this sport” sophomore, and long time teammate, Taylor Baltimore commented.

“Misha had a goal for herself, and that was to get to the next level and she knew it wasn’t going to be a piece of cake. She knew it was going to take hard work, determination, sacrifice, and staying humble to get to where she wanted to be,” Misty Ransdell, former Varsity assistant coach said.

Jones has played basketball since she was little in the Boys and Girls Club. Misha is lucky, she has played with most of the same girls for a good part of her basketball career. “It’s been amazing to have been not only her teammate but a sister for her all these years as well,” Baltimore commented.

Jones’ love for the sport is hard to put into words, “You can’t even describe it, it’s always been a part of me and I just have so much love for it, the thing it has brought me and the thing it continues to bring me, is making my family proud and there is no better feeling than that.

Basketball means the world to me.”

Ms. Rector, a ten year Bobcat and teacher from the history department, commented, “Academically, I believe that we are following higher level thinking strategies. Teachers have become more engaged and we have to promote more of the writing strategies and encourage the students to participate more. I think the school as a whole has done a fantastic job accomplishing that.”

The decade that Battlefield has been in business have been both successful and memorable. Athletically, Battlefield has boasted numerous individual and team awards, phenomenal seasons, and incredibly memorable games and competitions.

Mr. White, one of the P.E. teachers who has been here since opening stated, “Our school started out pretty small, we did not have many students. Kids could walk down the hall without a problem but eventually we became larger and larger over the years.”

Every student has their own circle of friends, as do teachers. Having a group of people that one can rely on is very important, especially in such a big environment. Ms. Gallitz, another BHS veteran teacher said, “I think cohesion between teachers and students is very important particularly between teachers.

It is good to be able have other teachers to collaborate and plan with.” These traits have led this school to build camaraderie and higher academic success.”

Battlefield has gone through nine different graduating classes so far, along with hundreds of students who not only met the standards but surpassed them.

Ninth grade history and varsity basketball coach, Mr. Fair said, “It has been such a joy to be able to teach the students at this school and to be able to watch them succeed and graduate. The kids here are phenomenal. I love teaching here and if I had to take one moment from this school it would be winning the state football championships in 2010.”

Battlefield has created some incredible memories since 2004. The students, staff and faculty are certainly looking forward to making 2014 the best year yet!

Six Potential Problems Holding You Back

First impressions are very important when it comes to selling your home. Buyers are more likely to give a home a second look or even write an offer on the spot if the home impresses them.

1. Odors – When you live in your home you become desensitized to the odors that can be obvious to visitors. The biggest offences are strong spices, pet odors and smokers.

2. Flooring – If carpets are dirty have a profession carpet cleaning company clean them. If they are worn replace them.

If vinyl flooring has dark color underneath or corners are rolling up, replace it. Same goes for ceramic tile, if you have lots of cracked or chipped tiles.

3. Paint – A great way to make a great first impression with little out of pocket expense. If weather permits start with the exterior trim, doors and windows. On the interior you may only need to touch up if you have neutral colors.

6. Exterior – Buyers start to develop their first impression by the way the exterior appears. Over grown or messy landscaping can send a negative impression in the first few minutes.

Come to author Patricia Daly-Lipe’s table at High Ridge Farm in Haymarket, and you might sit in the very same chair Danish royalty shared while visiting her great uncle William’s Palazzo Doria apartment in Rome.

Patricia holds William’s medals, including the Order of the Knights of Malta, and points to the photo of him in his World War I uniform that she used for her sixth and newest book, Patriot Priest: The Story of Monsignor William A. Hemmick, The Vatican’s First American Canon (Strategic Media Books, Rock Hill, SC, 2014).

“I met William Hemmick, my mother’s only living relative, in 1961, when I was 19 and had just completed my sophomore year at Vassar. My mother had died the year before,” said Patricia. She wrote about the encounter in ALL ALONE, Washington to Rome, A ’60s Memoir.

“When my agent read the manuscript, she said, ‘Guess what? Your next book is going to be about this great uncle of yours, because he is amazing,’” she added.

“Oh, boy!”

Researching the book took her deep into archives and Latin translations of Vatican missives, aided by her Osher Lifelong Learning Institute friend, Alana Lukes. But it wasn’t until she opened the letters William wrote to her grandmother that she began to understand what he had been through. Ordained by Cardinal Gibbons in 1911, William felt committed to help the troops when the First World War broke out. That meant joining the bloody, unrelenting trench warfare at the front lines. After the war, the U.S. Army and Navy proclaimed him the “Patriot Priest of Picardy.” In Paris between the wars, he established and ran the American Catholic Welfare Centre for those traumatized by war, ministering to men long before post-traumatic stress disorder became a common term.

The Vatican asked William to Rome and ultimately, he became the only American Canon of St. Peter’s representing the Knights of Malta to the Holy See. He performed the nuptials of American film star Tyrone Power and Linda Christian, and converted the future Queen Astrid of Belgium. In fact, he interacted with some of the most notable figures of the 20th century, including Pope Benedict XV, Marshal Ferdinand Foch, artist Simon Elwes, Sir Shane Leslie, F. continued from page 24 “He was the kind of man who hosted the King and Queen of Denmark one moment and the next, delivered food to a needy boy on the piazza,” said Patricia. “He wasn’t aloof. He was down to earth, a happy, jovial man. He made you feel good no matter what.”

Patricia took her local book launch to Desiderio ItalianAmerican Grill in Gainesville on February 16, fêting friends and family, and partnering with the owners to donate 10 percent of the food and book sales to Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center.

“I’m glad to help Rainbow out again, and the fact that they work with wounded veterans, I think, is a wonderful thing,” said Patricia. She worked a similar program, called Pegasus, and witnessed an autistic boy speaking for the first time in years after settling onto a horse named Ozzie.

“Before the sidewalkers had a chance to say anything, the little boy said, ‘Walk on, Ozzie.’ And we all burst into tears,” said Patricia. “That’s why I love horses. They take care of you.”

From Racehorses to Rescues Patricia and Steele moved to Northern Virginia from California in 2004, choosing Haymarket for its proximity to the nation’s capital, so Patricia could follow her writing and artistic pursuits, but far enough out that they could enjoy the countryside, especially with its acres of open space and riding trails at James S. Long Park and the Manassas National Battlefield Park. She’s proud of her granddaughter Locke in Nokesville, who has been doing very well showing her ponies at horse shows in the area.

In California, Patricia had found moderate success in raising and racing thoroughbreds. Her legend was Patty Petrone, saddled by trainer Eddie Gregson. But her three children – Johnson, Tasha and Kahti – began raising families of their own in the east, she longed to be near them and all six of her grandchildren. Besides, she had spent half her 26

childhood in Washington D.C., home of several generations of her mother’s family.

“Steele built a barn with solar panels and put in three pastures,” Patricia said, proudly touring his handiwork, including an addition with a commercial grade endless pool and exterior wooden deck. Patricia’s favorite room, of course, besides the art studio, is the library, with red wainscoting and lined with books, family photos and paintings of horses. The dogs find warmth on cushions by the fireplace.

Patricia submitted several of her own artworks for the Clarke County Historical Association’s annual Art at the Mill Spring 2014 Show in Berryville. She is a lifelong patron, as well, most notably donating the six-foot pastel portrait of her grandmother Katharine Hemmick Johnson, painted by Alice Pike Barney, to the Smithsonian. A smaller version of the beloved portrait sits atop her library shelf.

Her grandfather was the president of the National Metropolitan Bank, the façade of which still faces the Treasury Building. Patricia remembers standing with her mother on the bank’s upstairs balcony and waving at President Eisenhower on his inaugural day procession to the White House. Their family homes once included the current headquarters for the National Society Daughters of American Colonists and The Lyceum in Alexandria.

Each room in the High Ridge Farm home is filled with generations of paintings. She points out one she painted of her granddaughter, Devan, as a small girl at the Peaks of Otter. Devan is 19 now, the age Patricia was when she first met her great uncle William, and works in Washington, D.C. at the National League of American Pen Women. She plans to transfer to the University of Oregon in the fall.

“After I returned from Rome, I finished my B.A. degree in Philosophy at Vassar, lived in D.C. and wrote for the Evening Star,” Patricia said. She completed a Master’s degree and PhD in Creative Arts and Communication, continued on page 28 Haymarket Lifestyle

“Write without sharing it with anybody until you are done,” she said. “I don’t want anyone to write formula writing. That’s what sells very quickly and is forgotten just as quickly. Write well and read well. It takes courage to write from the heart, but if you do, it is a gift to whoever reads it.”

She has written five other books: A Cruel Calm: Paris Between The Wars; Messages from Nature; Myth, Magic and Metaphor, A Journey into the Heart of Creativity; ALL ALONE, Washington to Rome, A ’60s Memoir and La Jolla, A Celebration of Its Past.

Patricia is past president of the National League of American Pen Women’s branches in La Jolla and Washington, D.C. and historian for the National Society Daughters of American Colonists, D.C. She is a member of Write by the Rails, the Prince William Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club.

At age 71, Patricia spends her time writing, painting, acting in OLLI’s Readers’ Theatre, selling natural dog food and rescuing thoroughbreds – nine of them. The rescue work has been curtailed, however; the open space surrounding their property has been sold to developers and the trails are now blocked by barbed wire and locked gates. Only three horses remain: Just’n, Teddy and Dutch.

“I call him Just’n because we literally got him ‘just in’ time,” Patricia says of the former Joseph Smoking Eagle.

He was bred in Kentucky and raced six years before he hurt himself. “They put him in auction, and even though there was a bone chip in his left front leg, the buyer made him into a barrel racer. Then he put an ad in the paper: ‘Thoroughbred horse, $100.’ My daughter’s neighbor pulled him out of a round pen with two cows and said, ‘Tell your mom we have a horse for her.’ His eyes were glazed; his feet were turned up and his teeth were too long. You could see every bone in his body. That was the state he was in. Now, he’s beautiful. I take care of him. We give him medication.

He’s never going to leave here.”

Patricia clearly has a rapport with animals. “We have an understanding. They know I’m here to help them,” she said.

5 Simple Tips for Creating

Fun and Functional Children’s Rooms

by Paola McDonald Remember when you first decorated your baby’s nursery, when you could choose any style and color you wished to prepare that special room for your special little one?

Well, now that baby is growing up, complete with her own ideas about which colors, furniture, and décor looks best! She wants a room that reflects her personality, as well as one that showcases her favorite colors and decorative tastes.

You want a room that provides her with a quiet place to study, a fun place to play and spend time with friends, not to mention an organized space that will help her get ready for school – and help you get out the door – in the morning!

Can both of you have everything you want in a room? With a little bit of planning and teamwork, you definitely can. Keeping your child in mind as you make decorating decisions, as well as asking her to join in the process, will help you create a room that is perfect for her and that fits perfectly into your home.

Here are five simple tips to keep in mind as you plan your child’s perfect space:

3. Don’t forget lighting – it can make a statement: Lighting is very important for all of us, particularly if we want to raise good, strong readers. Make sure you consider both overhead and easy-to-use task lighting. Your child’s desk will need a lamp, but so will her bedside table.

Provide options for lighting, according to the needs of various parts of her room.

But, keep design in mind! These days, lighting fixtures are both functional and attractive. Some of them can even be the statement piece in a room.

4. Have fun with it – color, pattern, texture: Decorating a children’s room is your opportunity to let your inner child out. While you may prefer to keep things more traditional or simple in your living and dining areas, the children’s rooms is the perfect place to try some of those bolder design ideas you’ve seen in magazines and on Pinterest. 1. Consider easy-to-transition storage – As your child grows up, her storage needs will change. In the first few years, large toys and stuffed animals will need a place to be tucked away. But, when she gets older, she may have more clothes, handbags, and shoes that will need to be organized. You’d be surprised how many options you would never consider that can actually end up looking amazing together. Try creating idea boards to mix and match patterns and colors until you get a combination that works for you. Consider using toys, such as large stuffed animals and dollhouses, as part of the décor. What do you wish your room had looked like when you were a child?

Now is the time to indulge those ideas -- Go ahead, let your inner child loose!

5. Get your child involved – While you probably have tons of amazing ideas for what you’d like your child’s room to be, don’t forget that it is her space, after all. It is important for children to feel totally themselves in their room. Even if their design style clashes a bit with yours, let them have input on what their room looks like. For example, ask them to describe what their favorite room would look like, and try to incorporate some of those ideas into the décor. Also, let them participate in compiling the idea board so they can have a hands-on role in the process. Treat it like a fun crafting project, and see where

their imaginations lead! Allowing them to make decisions about their room will give them confidence and will ensure that they get a room they will enjoy. Even if they come up with ideas that aren’t very practical, you could try to use a variation on their idea that will still be creative and original. There are always ways to make their off-the-wall ideas work. Who knows, they could turn into the next hot design trend!

Implementing these tips into your child’s room can be a lot of fun and can completely transform an important space in your home. While we may not immediately put a lot of thought into the décor of our children’s rooms, doing so will add a sense of design continuity throughout the home. And, as your kids grow up, they’ll have plenty of friends coming over for play dates, birthday parties, and other occasions, so thinking of their room from the perspective of guests can change your perspective on how important this space actually is.

If you take the time to learn about your child’s needs and style, you’ll be surprised at how much they’ll enjoy the process – and especially the results of their brand new room. In fact, your child might just want to be sent to their room!

Haymarket Daily News Site Launched by Bristow Beat Team

Haymarket is finally going to have it own resource for local daily news.

The publishers of the Bristow Beat, which covers western Prince William towns, are set to take Haymarket Beat live in March.

“Residents of Haymarket regularly read BristowBeat.com,” Publisher Jason Shaw said. “This is our attempt to formalize our coverage of the town.”

According to Shaw, most news media cover the high profile events of Haymarket; however, he notes the lack of daily coverage of those stories that are pertinent to the lives of residents.

Among these, he cites local traffic and crime reports.

“Other media outlets swoop in, cover a breaking story, and run back to D.C., Leesburg or the other side of Prince William County,” Shaw said.

“We’re here and we report the smaller stories, while offering true in-depth 34

coverage of the larger events and incidents.”

Furthermore, Shaw said the town is rich with interesting people and successful businesses that need to be publicized.

“A consideration of community is the key to the success of Bristow Beat,” he said. “It’s what we’ll bring to Haymarket.”

Originally located on the other side of the railroad tracks near Dave’s Store Lane, the Hashimy family, lead

by Sayed, opened the Afghan Famous Kabob Restaurant with the dream of sharing authentic Afghan food in a family-friendly restaurant. For almost seven years their restaurant has filled the void in the community by serving quick, healthy and satisfying lunch and dinner dishes with a touch of Middle Eastern flavor.

“We have very loyal customers, they have traveled with us from the old location to this one,” Hashimy said.

He said some order two or three times a week.

Ausak is a great appetizer to start with. It’s Afghan ravioli filled with leeks and served on yogurt-mint, topped with a savory ground beef sauce. Ausak can also be ordered for vegetarians.

The Boolawnee is a pastry stuffed with scallions and choice of chopped leek or potato and herbs served with a side of creamy homemade yogurt. Or try a small salad like the Salata made with diced cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and herbs topped with fresh lemon juice.

Owner Sayed Hashimy always greets his customers with a friendly smile and provides excellent service.

Best known for their kabobs, they offer thirteen choices to satisfy any craving. Each kabob features marinated meats like chicken, beef or lamb paired with fresh vegetables broiled over a bed of charcoal. The Boneless Chicken Breast is a customer favorite as well as the Lamb. The Shami is a close third with season ground beef rolled on to the skewer. For new guests the Deluxe Kabob is always suggested as it offers a taste of chicken, beef and lamb all on one dish. “We make our own bread and the customers like it a lot,” Hashimy mentioned. “It’s very fresh, from the flour we make the dough and we bake it right in the clay oven.”

The seven entrees on the menu are flavorful and colorful with each bite. Try the Qaubili Palau with tender pieces of lamb under a large portion of season rice that is topped with fried sweet carrots and raisins. It’s served with qurma (meat sauce). The Kadu Chalau features sautéed pumpkin with homemade yogurt and a sprinkle of mint accompanied by white rice. Handmade pastry shells stuffed with onions and beef lay on yogurt and topped with carrots, yellow split peas and drizzled with a creamy beef sauce make the Mantu entrée.

This restaurant can also adjust their meals for vegetarians, but before you make substitutions check out their vegetarian dishes. The Vegetarian Rice Dish has a combination of kadu (sautéed pumpkin), subzi (fried spinach), and bouranee baunjan (fried eggplant) served beside quabili palau (seasoned rice). If you like curry check out this dish:

mushroom, green pepper, red pepper, broccoli, cauliflower and garlic fried with onions and tomatoes mixed with a special seasoning blend and served with nan.

“The way we cook pumpkin- it’s very delicious,” Hashimy said. “It’s very sweet and the customers also really like that.”

THE WINERY AT BULL RUN Visitors to the Manassas Battlefield Park, as well as commuters can stop and unwind at The Winery at Bull Run. Located on Route 29 just east of the parking lot for the Stone Bridge, Bull Run sits on the remains of the historic Hillwood Estate. Local winemaker Chris Pearmund started the winery in 2011, planting vines and building new facilities behind the remains of the old Hillwood Manor, which are preserved as a stylish patio area for warm afternoons and evenings. The result is a spacious, yet cozy facility modelled after a tobacco barn, complete with covered patio - that is open year round - and a nearby barn which sports a whimsical painting touting Virginia wines. History buffs will notice the signs highlighting various historical facts and points of interest which are made by the same company that supplies similar historical markers in the adjacent National Park.

While owned by John Hickox, descendant of the original owners, Bull Run is part of the Pearmund family of wineries. General Manager George McDonald and Tasting Room Manager Dean Gruenburg are both veterans of other wineries and uphold a tradition of excellence and perfection that is seldom seen in a winery this young.

Notable white wines are the bold, buttery Chardonnay (which pairs beautifully with Alfredo sauces, Mac and Cheese and hot buttered popcorn) and the Peach wine, which is perfect for sitting out on the patio.
