t’s that time again… Time for the kids to head back to school. Time to squeeze in that last trip to the beach. And time for our annual Best Of awards! To all of you who voted, thank you. To all who are featured on the following pages, congratulations. Eugene’s Sausage and Fries, you’re on my must-try list. The Spotted Leopard, please, oh please, come redo my kitchen. It’s an honor to be the editor of Lifestyle and to read and write about the many wonderful businesses we have in our backyard, but it can also make you fat and broke. (Fair warning to Amanda Jedamski, named best coach/trainer of 2019, I have your phone number and I’m not afraid to use it.) Going beyond our Best Of winners, the issue you’re holding features several terrific stories. Don’t miss Mark Luna’s visit to Stone Tower Winery in Leesburg or Megan Casilli’s informative feature on how to help kids make going back to school a snap. In addition, definitely check out the article on Going Gainesville! and Lifestyle’s exciting new partnership with the popular Facebook program. For gardeners of every level of expertise, there are tips on attracting butterflies to your garden and creating window boxes like the Brits, and for those looking for a pastime that can be done anytime, don’t miss Pam Kamphuis’ fabulous feature on genealogical research. Discovering one’s roots has never been more popular, and Pam will show you how. Until next time, congratulations again to all our Best Of winners, thank you to all who voted, and special thanks to Frannie Barnes for a great job writing all the Best Of profiles in this issue. Master Eric Kwon, front and center, and the team at Kwon’s Champion School.

Kwon’s Champion School opened its doors in Gainesville in 1999 and is part of a familyowned chain of six locations, five in the US and one in Korea. At the helm and heart of Kwon’s Champion School is world renowned Grandmaster Kwon, a 10th degree black belt who began studying martial arts in Korea at the age of five and has devoted his life to martial arts training. Throughout his journey in the field, he learned many different styles and created combination martial arts, which teaches kids and adults the best techniques from different disciplines including Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Kung Fu, Hap Ki Do, kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu and weapons training. All locations are owned and run by students of Grandmaster Kwon. The Gainesville Kwon’s location is operated by his son Master Eric Kwon. Kwon’s is the only school of its kind that teaches the combined martial arts. The instructors use the highest quality equipment and painstakingly ensure the school and studio is clean. This is

evident by the pristine white mat in the school which is cleaned and sanitized every few hours. Students come for many different reasons. Some are looking for physical fitness, while others are looking for self-confidence. Kwon’s offers special beginner classes through master classes, and all its classes work on self-confidence, physical fitness, respect and listening. “Our school offers a very friendly environment and the support of positive instructors. Some people might be intimidated to learn, but you don’t need to be physically fit to start. Training at our school will help you get fit and gain coordination,” said Master Eric Kwon.

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

Kwon’s Champion School is best known for its “I can do things” mindset. At the end of each class, students recite the school oath which includes mantras about a healthy and holistic way of life. It includes respect of family, friends, and self; maintaining a good relationship with friends and family; trying to achieve one’s best in school and work; abstaining from drugs; having courage and honesty in everything one does; helping others in need; and finally, training for a strong mind and body. “At Kwon's, the students are not only taken care of, but learn self-discipline and respect as well. [Our boys] come home holding themselves accountable for their actions and I love that,"

said Brandy Reed, the parent of two Kwon’s students. “We are here to teach the community, kids and adults how to become a better version of themselves,” said Master Kwon. In addition to classes, Kwon’s offers before and after care for working parents, summer camps, women’s cardio kickboxing classes, birthday parties, and a monthly parents’ night out. Beyond that, the school offers occasional seminars on selfdefense and gives back to the community by visiting public schools and working with community groups such as the Girl Scouts. Master Kwon stressed the importance of community involvement. "Kwon's has exceptional teaching methods that I have been so impressed with,” said Sonia Chin, a parent whose children attend the school. “They have taught my kids respect for instructors, teachers, and parents. They are consistently improving their discipline, patience, and strength, while learning to be friendly to everyone they meet.” You can see for yourself what it’s like to train at Kwon’s Champion School by taking a free introductory class. The Spotted Leopard P: 571-285-8151 W: THESPOTTEDLEOPARDDESIGNS.COM FB: @THESPOTTEDLEOPARDDESIGNS

One day about ten years ago, Nadine Hollingsworth noticed her designer friend’s home looked quite different due to one small change – she had painted her furniture. Intrigued, Nadine asked her friend to show her how to transform pieces like she did her own and the friend walked her through the process and introduced her to Annie Sloan chalk paint. The minute Nadine picked up a paint brush, she fell in love with the endless possibilities available to her. She even took a class taught by Annie Sloan (a pioneer in chalk paint and painted furniture who travels from the United Kingdom to teach others how to use her products) and Miss Mustard Seed, another well-known European furniture painter. Shortly thereafter, Nadine and her family were impacted by the housing market crash and it seemed like the perfect time to use her hobby to make extra income for her family. The Spotted Leopard was born. “I figured, why not do something I love while taking care of my family at the same time? We are so grateful for the

support from our community in helping us get to where we are today,” Nadine said. The Spotted Leopard is a family business. Husband Michael helps fill any role that is needed including invoicing and installations, while daughter Mackenzie operates as the marketing manager and website designer. The family has been welcomed warmly by the community and, as a result, the

“WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR THE SUPPORT FROM OUR COMMUNITY IN HELPING US GET TO WHERE WE ARE TODAY” company has grown rapidly; this is its second year winning Best Of in Lifestyle. Today, The Spotted Leopard’s repertoire includes both painted furniture and cabinetry. Nadine’s painstaking research lead to the discovery of products that deliver durability and beauty, important qualities when painting kitchen cabinetry and other high-traffic pieces. The company also uses

an HVLP spraying system in a climate-controlled spray room to give pieces a factory-like finish instead of a hand-painted feel. As it says on the website, The Spotted Leopard is both “consultative and responsive to their client’s needs.” This means that if a client already has a clear vision of what they want, The Spotted Leopard will meet it. But if a client wants a change but doesn’t know where to start, the company is ready to rise to the challenge and provide design advice. The Spotted Leopard also collaborates with other designers. “My favorite type of job is when we work with designers to help completely change someone’s kitchen while still using the footprint of the space.

AFTER

Just by updating countertops, backsplash, and cabinetry, you can completely transform the look of almost any kitchen. The results are refreshing, and making the client feel excited about their home is so rewarding,” Nadine said. For the DIYer looking to dip a toe into the paint-it-yourself pool, Nadine advises that you do your research and use the right products to achieve maximum results. Paying attention to the prep work – cleaning, sanding, and priming – is crucial to obtaining a smooth, beautiful finish that will last. To schedule a consultation or for more information about The Spotted Leopard, please call or visit the website.

BEST DENTAL OFFICE

Awesome Smiles 6468 TRADING SQUARE, HAYMARKET (NEXT TO KOHL’S) P: 571-261-2600 W: AWESOMESMILESVA.COM FB: @AWESOMESMILESVA

How awesome is Haymarket’s Awesome Smiles? Since opening its doors in 2013, the practice has been named Best New Business of 2014 and Best Dental Office for four consecutive years. That’s a lot of accolades and the reason for each and every one of them is because Awesome Smiles’ patients love Dr. Tontra Lowe’s approach.

24

{ AUGUST 2019 |

Awesome Smiles treats patients of all ages and the one word that best describes Dr. Lowe’s philosophy and practice is holistic. Not in the organic/ecological sense, but in how she looks at and treats all things as a whole, not just their parts. This isn’t limited to dental care either, she has a focus on her community and giving back that is impressive. “Our mouth is a part of our body and interrelates in more ways than one,” Dr. Lowe said. When it comes to dental care, Dr. Lowe places an emphasis on how the mouth works with and affects the entire body. To that end, her office has spent countless hours working with patients’ health insurance companies to help access medical benefits for

treatment where there is an oral-systemic link. There is research, she explained, that has associated the overgrowth of bad bacteria in the mouth to heart disease, Alzheimer’s and colorectal cancer. Her office helps patients manage their medical and dental processes to treat the whole person. When it comes to serving her community, a passion instilled in her while at Howard University College of Dentistry, Dr. Lowe goes beyond the tried and typical. She created a Predentistry Internship program, where individuals seeking a career in the dental field can come to Awesome Smiles, work with the staff, and be completely immersed in the dental office setting. “We try to prepare them the best way possible not just with dental practice, but with chairside manner, and working as a team. It’s been an amazing opportunity for the students and for our office staff as

well,” Dr. Lowe said. Awesome Smiles offers general dentistry, from preventive care and routine cleanings, to reconstruction of the mouth due to drug addiction, reflux or Crohn’s disease, or secondary cancer effects. Cosmetic dentistry, such as teeth whitening, veneers, ClearCorrect aligners, and Six Month Smiles®, is also offered. Beyond these services and in keeping with her passion for community service, Dr. Lowe blogs frequently on dental and oral health issues providing valuable information to anyone who’d like to smile with confidence. Awesome Smiles is currently taking new patients. For more information, visit the practice’s Facebook page and its website (where you should definitely click on “blog”). When your car needs an oil change or new tires, you seek a service center that offers the best work at the best price. Luckily Gainesville and Haymarket have two such centers with Piedmont Tire & Auto. Piedmont Tire & Auto’s reputation for quality work and high customer service standards is known by many, (and is the reason why they’ve won Best Of every year since the contest began), but what might surprise you is that in addition to the service center’s stellar customer service, it makes a difference in our community every day. The family run business, operated by Stan Wood, opened in Gainesville in 1984. The original shop was torn down in 2002 when the Route 29 intersection expanded, and a larger service center was opened just around the corner on Hillwood Drive. With the rapid growth in Haymarket, the opportunity was ripe to help more customers, thus the opening of the service center on Washington Street in 2011. Both centers offer alignments, towing, computer diagnostics, brakes, state inspections and more. Operations Manager and business partner John Filippone explained that Piedmont Tire & Auto’s business “CUSTOMER SERVICE IS model is different from WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT, its competitors. service in a manner “We offer an honest BUT COMMUNITY OUTREACH unique to our industry” place for people to bring IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT since Piedmont Tire & their car and not worry TO US. The other shops, they were shop doesn’t mark up the price and in so not getting honest quotes or quality service doing has forced other shops to follow suit. and the two have strived to live up to the “Customer service is what we’re all company mission, “To provide honest, friendly, personal, professional, and courteous customer about, but community outreach is also

very important to us. We take care of our customers and our community,” Filippone said. The shop routinely contributes to Haymarket non-profit Carried to Full Term and donates its time and service to fix cars for staff members and parishioners of local churches in need. Piedmont Tire & Auto has given tires at no cost to families of children with pediatric cancer, military families and first responders, and it stays involved in local groups on social media to engage with the community. It was through this channel that the shop learned about the wife of a local service member on deployment who needed a car repair. The staff went to the house, towed the car, repaired and returned it. As a thank you, they were given a flag that was flown in Afghanistan where the husband was deployed. Piedmont Tire & Auto also actively supports local teachers, other local businesses, and the Haymarket Police Department, giving police offers discount coupons they can give to drivers pulled over for defective equipment. The company is truly all about its community. As Filippone said simply, “We like to help.” For more information about Piedmont Tire & Auto, including car care tips, call or visit the website.

Stonewall Veterinary Clinic has been a staple in the Gainesville community since 2003. Originally located at the intersection of Gallerher and Route 29, it was founded by two veterinary professionals, Dr. Lauri Fauss, DVM and Cheryl Collins, a licensed veterinary technician, who wanted to bring their love of pets and desire to serve the community to Gainesville and Haymarket. The clinic’s motto is, “Exceptional care for family pets,” and the group lives it every day. The clinic has grown by leaps and bounds since its early days and is now located in a state-of-the-art facility in Heritage Village Plaza. Co-founder Cheryl passed away in 2017, but her memory is still very much felt in how the clinic operates and the love provided to each and every pet who walks through their doors. Stonewall has won the “Best Of” award for eight years running and it’s no wonder why. When you bring your pet to Stonewall Veterinary clinic, you immediately feel that you are part of a tight-knit family. And while the staff is not small – with seven doctors, (three full-time and four part-time), four licensed veterinary technicians, eight assistant veterinary technicians and six customer service representatives – you are not just a number. The staff gets to know you and your pet. Even if you have a wary pet who shakes or hides under the chair, more often than not, your pet is greeted by name when you walk through the doors, and while

down at the clinic knows how deeply the providers care, as many send hand-written letters to the family. Long time patient Marta Bensen said, “Stonewall has been our veterinary clinic for the last 16 years, and a part of our family. We have sat and held hands with them as we waited to see if our new puppy would make it through a horrible

Stonewall provides routine physical checkups, dentals, laser therapy, acupuncture, ultrasounds, surgeries and in-house x-rays. The clinic is not a boarding facility but will board client’s cats who need shots/ medications and require special care. The clinic also has an on-site pharmacy and carries many prescription foods. What makes Stonewall Veterinary Clinic different from other practices? Becky Turner, clinic manager said, “Our number one priority is the care of the patient. We don’t push anything that the pet doesn’t need. We only suggest medicines or therapies that will help make their lives better.” When asked for the best advice for pet owners, the response is simple: prevention is the best medicine. “We recommend that your pet receive routine check-ups (just as you would for yourself), keep them up to date on their vaccines and their heartworm, flea and tick preventatives,” said Turner. Stonewall Veterinary Clinic is open from 8 am – 7 pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 8 am – 5 pm on Wednesday and Friday, and from 8 am – 12 noon on Saturday. The clinic’s website provides a wealth of information including pet FAQ’s, services offered, and Petly, the patient portal that helps pet owners keep track of appointments, vaccines, medications and more. GET CREATIVE WITH KERRY MOLINA

away with words I

local expert THE EXPERT:

Kerry Molina HER EXPERTISE:

Art

An artist, writer, teacher, and tutor, as well as the owner of Yellow Brick Road Studio and Enrichment Workshops, Molina was voted Lifestyle’s 2018 Best Local Artist. She holds a BA in Art History from Ithaca College and an MA in Museum Studies from The George Washington University. She resides in Gainesville with her husband, two children, and two cats. Visit her online at KerryMolina.com

’ve said it before, and I’ll say it forever: we are all creative. From cooking to clothing, dancing to decorating, we just need to give our creativity the chance to come out and play. Over the past few months, I’ve written here about several artsy endeavors. In this month’s column, I’d like to encourage you to get creative with words. Now please, don’t be intimidated by the idea of “writing.” The activities I’ve shared here are fun and interesting and, enjoyed alone or better yet, with your kids, will promote an affinity for words. And if you or your child already love writing and playing with words, the following are super writer’s block busters and thought stimulators. So, pick up a pencil and a journal or open a new document in Word. Give yourself permission to have fun and go for it!

random letters Take turns picking about 5 to 8 random letters of the alphabet. Then everyone has to come up with a sentence using words that start with those letters sequentially. These always end up silly. For example, we selected the letters P E S R A F N, and the resulting sentence was “People everywhere should run away frantically nodding.”

sentence stretching Try your hand at making short sentences much more interesting.

38

{ AUGUST 2019 |

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

Stretching out a sentence is a way to add details and provide more information. Start with a very basic sentence. Then use who, what, where, when and why questions to stretch it out. We started with the following super short sentence: It jumped. Next, we applied the sentence stretching elements and the final sentence became: A big rabbit jumped onto our patio this afternoon when he was startled by a loud dog barking.

plot planning Every story needs a conflict of some sort, whether it is between two characters or within oneself. This quick trick will give you a guideline to follow as you plan the conflict in a short story. Make four columns on a piece of paper with the titles Somebody, Wants, But and So. Then, working with your main character, write down what she wants, what the problem is, and what she does about it. For example, in my picture book, Kaci Keeps Dancing (shameless plug), Kaci wants to perform a flawless solo, but she forgets the steps. So, she recalls all her rehearsals, dedication and inner strength and finishes the dance strong.

pick-a-word poetry Poetry is not a four-letter word. It gets a bad rap because so many of us find it intimidating. One thing to remember is that poetry does not have to rhyme. If you skip this notion, you will

avoid forced rhymes which end up sounding silly because they focus more on rhyming sounds than on a well-thought-out idea. For this activity, a fun one to do with a group, one person calls out categories, and the others jot down the first thing they think of that fits into the category. For example, you might hear, “a type of flower,” and jot down magnolia. You hear “a number from one to 50” and write 27. I usually use ten categories per round, then the group selects eight words from those they’ve written down and writes a poem that includes those eight words. You can write a poem as a group or each participant can write their own poem. It’s completely up to you! I’m certain you can come up with your own categories, but here are a few to get you started: a scent, a sound, a state, a word used in cooking, an animal and a type of tree. I hope you’ll try some of these activities and, in doing so, exercise your creative writing muscles. As always, feel free to share your experiences with me at kerryc627@yahoo.com. Enjoy! ❖

SOME YEARS AGO , Staples came out with a hysterical commercial for back to school shopping. It featured the classic Christmas carol, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” and epitomized the feelings of millions of parents across the country. As the lyrics played, a dad joyfully danced down the aisle of a Staples store pushing a cart. He would randomly grab school supplies and toss them into the cart, twirling around while his children watched with very sad faces. Obviously, the kids didn’t share their dad’s enthusiasm for the start of a new school year. I am like the dad in the commercial. Although I’ve never danced down the aisle of a store looking for supplies, I am happy when the school year starts every August. It’s nice to get back into a routine and our lives have structure once again. However, I do get anxious about the homework.

Looking tothe Past Starting genealogical research BY PAM KAMPHUIS

H

as researching your family tree something you’ve always meant to do, but never got around to? Make it a New Year’s resolution this year...there’s no better time than the present! We have all the information to get you started on the right track. Lifestyle sat down with Bill and Cat Schwetke, local genealogists and members and officers on the staff of the local Culpeper Minutemen Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution and Fauquier Court House Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, respectively. Bill has seven Revolutionary War patriots in his ancestry, and Cat has eleven, as well as a link back to a “witch” from the Salem Witch Trials, which, Bill says with humour, “explains a lot about Cat.” The pair have researched their own ancestries extensively, but also enjoy helping others do so as well on a volunteer basis. “We intended to become professional,” Bills says, “But the pro bono part became 100 percent of the business. And we’re very happy.”

step 1: Bill and Cat recommend, “Start with what you know, write it down. Names of parents, birthdates, marriage dates. If you know your grandparents’ dates, write them down. Then talk to your family, especially the older generations. Don’t wait until tomorrow, do it today, because they won’t be around forever. Go to see them or pick up the phone. They have a wealth of information in their memory, and maybe more written down in records tucked away somewhere. Keep an eye out especially for photos and family bibles.” Genealogy can be dry if you don’t do it right. If all you’re looking for is names and dates, it’s going to be pretty boring. You

42

need to get into the stories, step into your ancestors’ shoes and see the world as they saw it. You have to bring it to life. “Get a sense of what the world was like when they were living,” Bill recommends. “What was it like to be them? Just sit down, talk to your relatives, gets dates and places, but also get the stories. You’re not going to be able to write fast enough. You might want to invest in a voice recorder.” step 2: Visit your local library. Both Fauquier and Prince William libraries have a wealth of resources and experts to

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

help your family research. Both libraries maintain subscriptions to online databases and services used for genealogy. The two principal ones are ancestry.com (available only at the library unless you subscribe personally, which can be expensive) and heritagequest.com (available at the library, or from home using your library card). In addition, the libraries maintain records or links to a plethora of other records and resources, including historical newspapers, in a variety of formats: digitized, microfilmed, or the old-fashioned way, on

paper. In Fauquier, Vicki Ginter at the Warrenton branch and Mary Sue Marsh at the Bealeton branch can point you in the right direction for your research, and in Prince William County you’ll want to head down to the Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center (RELIC). Based in the Bull Run Branch of the library, the center is staffed with experts in local history and genealogy who can assist you. Additionally, they do informational programs on genealogyrelated topics about once or twice a month.

step 3: Record your facts in an orderly fashion. There are downloadable forms on the internet that can help you organize your information and determine what’s missing. The best way to begin is with a fivegeneration pedigree chart. Once you get past a few generations, you’ll probably want some software to help you organize your data. “Familysearch.org is a great resource,” says Bill. They will let you put a family tree up on their site for free. This will connect you with others doing similar research: as you put in your ancestors’ information, the database will look for matches, and will notify you if that ancestor is in the database already. This is a lucky find, since you may have hooked onto someone who has a lot of information about your mutual family tree. However, each person has only one record in the Familysearch database, and anyone can edit it. Now this is good, if someone else has correct information that can help further your research, but it can be bad if their data is incorrect. The other issue with Familysearch is that its printing capability is very limited, so you can’t really print your trees or reports. Therefore your next step is to invest in a genealogy program such as Family Tree Maker, Roots Magic, Reunion (said to be good on Macs), or one of many others. So the ideal situation is to use Familysearch for research, contacts, and ideas, then utilize a genealogy program for your personal records and notes, which will also enable you to print your data. step 4: Online research.

The thousands of online databases for genealogy (some free, some available only by paid subscription), are growing every day, and there’s a lot you can find from census records, military records, pension records, and many other sources. One subscription database that Bill has found very helpful is Newspapers.com, which permits users to search by name. The first thing to do is

search for obituaries, for basic facts. After that, conducting more general searches can yield a lot of other information. Bill said, “I found an ancestor who had been invited to a next door neighbor’s 11th birthday party in a newspaper article. The article mentioned other relatives also, and I was literally able to prove an ancestor based on that article.” But, Bill warns, you may not always like what you discover about your ancestors. “That’s part of genealogy,” he says. “You’ll find out some things you didn’t want to know, but you’ll also find an awful lot that you do want to know.”

step 5: Offline research. As Cat says, “The internet is great, but it’s not a substitute for talking to people or visiting the places of your past and really feeling the history. It’s an incredible feeling to know that you’re walking where your ancestors actually walked and seeing the world through their eyes. Always go to the location. I don’t care if it’s clear across the country, go there.” She explains, “ We went to Kentucky to do some research. We visited the local historical society, and the lady there took me to all the family cemeteries where my family members are. One of them was on a privately owned farm, and she coordinated with the farm owner so we could visit the grave, which was in a little family plot. She told us all sorts of stories about the area. That trip alone was worth everything.” dna testing The Schwetkes recommend getting your DNA tested, as well as the DNA of your older generations, even if you don’t intend to do anything with it right away. “In the future, you will deeply regret not having done it,” says Bill. He adds, “For about $50 you can get a good, reliable test. There are four DNA tests available: X, Y, autosomal, and mitochondrial. Autosomal is the best bang for the buck to start with. The company will keep your DNA on file in case you want to do further testing.” In addition, it will add your data to its database, search its population for matches, and then tell you what they’ve found. “You may get a match with a distant cousin,” says Bill. “In that case, number one, you’ve found someone in your family who is also interested in family history. Number two, they may have information you don’t have. They may even have the family bible.” genealogical societies Genealogical societies are eager to help people discover

a few words of caution Genealogy was all the rage in Europe in the 1800s, and many families paid genealogists to trace their family trees. Unfortunately, much of this research is unreliable since the genealogists were trying to please clients by “finding” noble or royal ancestors. Also, there are many family trees out there, on many different databases, and many have errors in them. As with facts in the rest of the world, remember that just because you read it on the internet doesn’t make it true. The bottom line: Consulting others’ family trees online is an excellent place to start and get ideas for where to go next, but there’s no substitute for your own research.

online research There are thousands of websites out there with genealogical information. Where to go first? How to start? Which ones are the most useful? Try starting with these: Familysearch.org (free) Newspapers.com (by subscription) Fold3.com (military records) (by subscription) Findagrave.com (free) Ancestry.com (by subscription or free in-library use)

their ancestry, and there are plenty of them out there: the Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Jamestown Society, and the Mayflower Society are just a few. Membership in these groups is contingent on proving your lineage back to a qualifying ancestor. Sound hard? It’s not impossible. If you are interested in researching your family history and/or joining a genealogical society, contact your local DAR, SAR or DoC chapter for help. But be warned: “Genealogy is addictive,” Cat says. “It will draw you in and before you know it you’ll be online at 3 a.m. following a lead.” ❖

concern is the recovery period. ACL tears typically require surgery and have a six-month rehabilitation period that athletes must take very seriously.

he start of a new school year means a new season for sports. High school and college athletes typically start football, cheerleading, field hockey, cross country, golf and volleyball seasons in the fall. With teams finalizing rosters and hitting the practice fields, now is a good time to be reminded of common injuries and risks associated with playing a sport and learn about treatment. Frederick W. Parker, III, MD, M.Ed is a provider at Novant Health UVA Health System Bull Run Family Medicine Manassas who frequently treats sports-related injuries in young athletes. Dr. Parker says he and his team see the full gamut of sports injuries at their practice and are well-prepared for varying levels of severity. “The severity depends on the sport, how the injury occurred and sometimes the age of the athlete,” said Dr. Parker. “The majority of injuries we see are ligamentous or soft tissue, such as overuse injuries, sprains,

44

{ AUGUST 2019 |

strains and contusions, that usually heal quickly and without lasting impact. But there are two looming concerns among young athletes and their parents: ACL tears and concussions.”

ACL Tears The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the major ligaments in the knee. ACL tears are some of the most publicized sports injuries. When a professional athlete goes down with a career-ending ACL injury, news outlets cover the heartbreaking moment in detail. Closer to home, many of us have had friends or family undergo the dreaded ACL repair surgery — or even experienced one ourselves. “ACL tears are a big fear because there is little we can do to prevent them,” said Dr. Parker. “One awkward landing is all it takes, and the risk of a tear can be exacerbated by preexisting issues, such as weak supporting muscles, congenital issues or even hormonal imbalances.” One reason they are such a

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

Perhaps not as widely publicized as ACL injuries, head injuries are another big concern, especially for athletes participating in contact sports. Schools’ athletic training departments participate in concussion training and athletes are given concussion tests at the beginning of the season. “Concussion testing records an athlete’s neurocognitive responses, so we have a baseline for evaluating an incident’s severity,” said Dr. Parker. “When a patient shows signs of a concussion, we use this baseline neurocognitive test, with evaluation of their symptoms and a physical exam, to determine recommendations for further management.” Signs of a concussion can include: • A history of head injury followed by a headache • Lightheadedness • Dizziness • Fatigue • Difficulty with balance • Sleep problems • Increased anxiety In serious cases, individuals might also lose consciousness, experience seizures or exhibit unusual behavior. These cases should be evaluated immediately by an athletic trainer or emergency medicine provider and may require a computed tomography (CT) scan. Neurologists generally don’t have the appointment availability to assess athletes on a weekly basis for return to play approval. For this reason, the last decade has seen marked improvements in concussion diagnosis and management among primary care providers. According to Dr. Parker, primary

care sports medicine doctors who are trained in concussion management are much better at treating concussions efficiently and effectively and getting athletes back to play safely. “In the past, doctors typically diagnosed concussions acutely and recommended taking a week off, but only saw the patient again if there were persistent symptoms,” said Dr. Parker. “Now we understand that wasn’t an effective way of managing a concussion. Even seemingly minor head injuries can lead to ongoing symptoms.” To return to their sport, an athlete must be symptom free and back to their baseline measurements. The athlete will gradually increase activity in accordance with a three- to fiveday “return to play” protocol. If symptoms are observed during this window, the athlete starts the process again. Doctors caution against sending athletes back into play before they are fully recovered and symptom-free.

Don’t Live in Fear Despite the risk of injury, Dr. Parker emphasizes the benefits of kids and teenagers participating in sports, including teamwork skills, lessons in sportsmanship and healthier lifestyles. In fact, many doctors encourage kids to be multi-sport athletes, which helps avoid overuse injuries. “There is always a risk of injury, but you can’t live in fear,” said Dr. Parker. “You can do the same amount of damage slipping on ice or tripping on stairs. I would never discourage athletic activity because of the overall health benefits of exercise.” For more information about orthopedics and sports medicine services at Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center, please visit novanthealthuva.org/ services/orthopedics--sportsmedicine.aspx. ❖

H2 GO Tips for effective hydration

BY JARED NIETERS

he primary way the human body disperses heat is through sweat. Capillaries transport water droplets (and salts) to your skin, where they evaporate, taking heat with them. For athletes, this is tremendously important because of the heat generated during exercise. In fact, about 75 percent of the energy generated during exercise ends up being converted to heat. In maintaining optimal performance, the harder you go, the more you sweat. And when your body begins to run low on fluid for cooling, performance diminishes. Fatigue isn’t the only side effect of dehydration. Serious dehydration can disrupt normal body functions and can result in heat stroke.

The sweat that comes to the surface of your skin transports electrolytes with it. That white film that develops on clothes during exercise is comprised primarily of sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Each of these components has different properties and contributes to performance in different ways, and each is lost at different rates depending on the individual. While the body stores each of these sweat components, replenishing those stores is crucial for performance. Not only is water insufficient for effective hydration, but too much water can have a negative effect and deplete electrolytes at a higher rate. Effective hydration involves drinking before, during, and after activity. It

“In certain conditions, fluid losses can approach half a gallon an hour.” Fluid intake needs vary by person, of course, but almost all of us are perpetually slightly dehydrated. Sweat levels can vary greatly too, by individual and based on factors like heat, humidity, intensity of exercise, and individual fitness level. In certain conditions, fluid losses can approach half a gallon an hour. As fluid loss increases, blood volume decreases. This not only strains your heart, lungs and brain, but in athletes it also reduces your body’s ability to deliver oxygen to muscles. Losing 2% of your body weight in fluid (common during prolonged activity) can decrease aerobic capacity by nearly 20%. This is problematic because the more fluid you lose, the less ability you have to sweat.

may seem simple, but in the day or two before exercise or an event, consuming fluids at a slightly higher rate than normal is a good idea. You don’t want to force yourself to drink so much that you gain substantial “water weight” and bloat your stomach, though. Avoiding the common state of mild dehydration is the goal. Drinking too much will lead to the inconvenience of more frequent bathroom visits, without providing any performance advantage. During exercise, the goal is to consume fluids to the point that you lose no more than 2% of your body weight. This can take some experimentation (including weighing yourself before and after exercise) in order to find the balance. The American

TIPS FOR MORE EFFECTIVE HYDRATION Start your day with 8oz of water. It’s an easy amount to consume and can keep you ahead of the game.

Keep a bottle with you. Having access to water or a sports drink throughout the day can help you avoid that perpetual, mild dehydration. Something with a “sports cap” makes it even more convenient.

College of Sports Medicine recommends “drinking as much as possible” while not forcing fluids down and causing a sloshy stomach (or gaining weight). It’s important to consume more than just water to avoid depleting electrolyte stores, which can become dangerous (and in rare cases, fatal).

The best bet is a drink high in electrolytes, with some carbohydrates. This will help both to hydrate and fuel your workout. After exercise, it’s recommended you replace 1.2 to 1.5 times the weight lost during the effort. This calculation is relatively easy - a pint of fluid is roughly a

Drink cool drinks. If the beverage is cool on a hot day, you’ll be more apt to consume it. Insulated bottles and cups make it convenient to keep your drink cool.

Find something you like. If it tastes good, you’re more likely to drink it. Studies have shown that a slightly sweetened drink will result in higher consumption rates.

pound. You don’t want to rush this consumption because the rapid increase in blood volume will promote urination, which increases the risk of hyponatremia, a dangerous condition more commonly known as water intoxication. Post-exercise drinks should include electrolytes, carbohydrates, and protein. ❖

When and why did you decide to pursue a real estate career?

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I always had an interest in real estate as I grew up with parents who taught me that it was the best investment. I started my real estate career about 6 years ago with RE/MAX Gateway. They have five offices in Northern Virginia and offered great training and support.

I love to travel, am a fan of natural health and nutrition, and enjoy thrift shopping and fashion.

What is your favorite restaurant? Can’t say I have one. I love that we have so many choices in the area.

How does your business serve the local community? I help families transition to the area, whether the client is a first time home buyer, or someone looking for a larger home, by letting them know all the benefits of living here as there are many. I also love assisting clients who are downsizing and considering 55+ communities or neighborhoods with smaller homes. There are so many new-builds and more 55+ communities on the way.

What is your favorite local high school sports team? Battlefield Bobcats - football and girls’ field hockey.

Are you involved with any nonprofits? I enjoy helping others and as such I’m a member of the Dominion Women’s Club, Habitat for Humanity, and Children’s Miracle Network. RE/MAX Gateway is a CMN sponsor and a portion of my sales goes to the Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. I hold awards from RE/MAX 100% Club and NVAR Top Producer (formerly the Multi-Million Dollar Sales Club), and recently became a qualified trainer for the Virginia Housing Development Authority’s Homeownership Education Program. VHDA offers grants and closing cost assistance to those who qualify. It's a wonderful opportunity to help those who want to purchase a home.

Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business? I am new to HGBA and find it a great

networking tool. I like meeting all the other business owners in the area and having the opportunity to help each other be successful.

What are the top three business tips and tricks you can offer other professionals? Be consistent with your marketing, differentiate yourself and, most of all, surround yourself with people you aspire to be like.

Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what

do you like about our town? I lived in Maryland for most of my life, and in 2003 my husband’s job moved us to Haymarket. It’s a great place to live. Convenience of location, amenities, restaurants, parks, community activities and the wineries!

What is your favorite season in this area, and why? Spring, as I look forward to the flowers, greenery, warmth and being outside in the community.

What was your most interesting job prior to your current profession? I was a professional runway/print model in the DC area. I had the opportunity to model for Chanel, Yves St Laurent, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, and Ralph Lauren. I was also an extra in “In the Line of Fire” with Clint Eastwood and Rene Russo, “Born Yesterday” with Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, and “Contact” with Matthew McConaughey and Jodi Foster, all of which were filmed locally. ❖

Land for the Living Stonewall Memory Gardens is a place for reflection and planning ahead STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

W

hen Shirley Pearson Fahringer, manager of family services, walks the grounds of Stonewall Memory Gardens, she sees names of people from all throughout her life, teachers, family, friends, even the doctor who delivered her children. But instead of sorrow, she recalls times spent together and feels peaceful. Admittedly, hers is an uncommon perspective, a result of having worked in this field for almost a decade. A planner and organizer at heart, Fahringer has her burial plans in place, and her eternal resting place picked out and paid for. So does her husband and anyone else she has encouraged. While this may sound morbid to some, Fahringer says this process is one of the most compassionate acts a person can do for their loved ones. The saddest thing Fahringer sees is when people come in grief-stricken, and have to make some of the most difficult decisions of their lives. They’re unsure what to do and fear making the wrong decision; something they’ll worry about for the rest of their lives.

50

{ AUGUST 2019 |

Fahringer points out that “the average person does quite a bit of planning for life’s possibilities. They purchase life insurance, start a college fund, buy health insurance. And yet death, something that will happen to each one of us, is not thought of in the same vein.” Step one is that conversation no one wants to have. Fahringer says “it’s not uncommon for spouses to have no idea of what their partner’s vision is for burial. And children may not know what their parents’ true wishes are.” Handling the burial of someone whose wishes haven’t been communicated often results in the responsible party overspending to compensate for not feeling confident they’re

GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

doing the right thing. But a life-changing aspect to having plans already in place is that loved ones can take the time to mourn, instead of shopping. They're not tasked with agonizing choices. There are also financial advantages. A plan made in advance can be paid in phases, but without plans, 100% of the total is due before burial. Stonewall Memory Gardens is part of the Dignity Memorial provider network. There are quite a few benefits of choosing a provider in such a network; one of them is transferability. These advantages could be especially important in areas like ours where families relocate often. Any prearranged services are honored at all other Dignity Memorial providers in North America. While a growing number of people are choosing cremation, others still prefer traditional burial plots. At Stonewall,

mausoleums, cremation niches, and family estates and individual plots are available in its beautiful setting among the Manassas Battlefields. While society wants to portray cemeteries as a place of fear, “they are truly a land for the living,” says Fahringer. Stonewall Memory Gardens is a place of peace and for remembrance, and those who work there take pride in maintaining its beauty. To help make this a place of comfort to families, including children, Stonewall Memory Gardens hosts events, like a butterfly release, cookouts, an Easter sunrise service. “Mother’s Day is by far the most visited day of the year,” explains Fahringer, so “we host a cookout that day to greet guests and give support to those mourning.” Fahringer encourages visitors to come by from sunrise to sunset to explore Stonewall Memory Gardens. And when the time arrives, she will be ready to meet with those convinced that preplanning their services will be a gift to their loved ones. “Start that conversation now,” she says. “You’ll be glad you did.” ❖

DESIGN 101:

Champagne Wishes... BY YARON LINETT “Who makes the finest furniture?” “What is the best fabric?” Interior designers deal with these and many other questions every day. In honor of this issue’s “Best Of” feature, this month’s column focuses on some of the bests in Interior Design.

the best is usually velvet. Typically mohair is the premier velvet, but silk velvet is pretty amazing, too. In the realm of exotic you could upholster with an Epingle (a 14th century wire woven fabric) or better yet...Vicuna wool. Vicuna is to Alpaca what Alpaca is to Llama. PRO TIP

WHAT IS THE BEST X? With all of these questions the answer is really, “it depends,” but if we begin with the assumption that money is no object and the use is high-end residential, here are the answers we supply to our clients.

WHAT IS THE BEST FABRIC? There are many amazing fibers and numerous applications. In general, the best drapes are made from silk, and that silk is either embroidered or woven into a brocade. As for bedding, natural linen is what we consider to be the best choice. And when it comes to upholstery, while we love a good herringbone or chenille,

No matter how “advanced” a manufacturer claims their multizone foam cushion is, it’s simply not as nice as a properly made down- and feather-wrapped, eight-way hand-tied coil spring cushion. Supported by a weave of jute webbing, cushions made in this fashion not only are the most comfortable, but they last far longer than foam - memory or otherwise. We have mentioned it before, but it is worth repeating. There are hypo-allergenic downs and cruelty free downs. Neither you nor the fowl need suffer for your comfort. PRO TIP

WHAT ARE THE BEST FLOORS? While most people will argue hardwood or marble, (and we’d ask that you also consider cork; it’s beautiful, forgiving, resilient,

and green), it’s what is under your floor that’s more important to us. The very best floors found in the very best places are heated. Radiant heating will keep your feet warm and your energy costs down. Radiant heating has been around for centuries. It is one of the most efficient methods of heating your home, and since the invention of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX), any risk of serious issues has greatly decreased. PRO TIP

WHAT MATERIAL MAKES FOR THE BEST COUNTERTOPS? Once again our old friend marble is the first to many people’s lips. It is beautiful, and without any consideration for maintenance or expense, it’s definitely a top contender. However, we suggest you look into an option that doesn’t even appear in most searches for countertop material… porcelain. The queen of clays, porcelain can be manufactured in slabs for use as a countertop. Heat resistant, easy to clean, and very durable, porcelain is a popular choice across Europe. Make sure that your installer is familiar with working with porcelain slabs. While the material is gaining popularity in the United States, there are still far fewer installers who have worked with it than other countertop materials. ❖ PRO TIP

How to Attract Butterflies to Your Yard

An American Painted Lady Butterfly on a Dasiy flower.

BY JANENE CULLEN

E

veryone pauses to watch when a butterfly flutters by. There is just something about their beauty and grace that is magical to observe. Would you like to encourage more butterflies to visit your yard? You can when you bear in mind the important factors provided here. Plant a diversity of native plants. Butterflies are beautiful diverse creatures, and they require a diversity of food sources. Planting native plants is not only great for attracting butterflies, it benefits the environment and reduces the amount of maintenance your garden requires. The butterflies local to your area will enjoy and use native plants the most so when choosing native flowers, pick a variety of flower shapes, colors, and sizes to meet the needs of different butterflies. Provide a native butterfly maternity ward. Adult butterflies feed on nectar while caterpillars and larvae eat the leaves of specific plants. While most females will lay eggs on a variety of plants, others can be quite fussy. For example, monarch butterflies will leave eggs only on milkweed (Asclepias) plants. You need both a variety of flowers for nectar, but also a variety of native plants for a maternity ward for

butterfly eggs and young caterpillars. Provide native food spring, summer and fall. The key to attracting butterflies is nectar - and lots of it! Butterflies that overwinter as adults need nectar sources early in the season, and fall migrants, like monarchs, need plenty of nectar to fuel their long journeys south. It's easy to provide nectar in the summer, when most flowers are in bloom, but does your backyard offer nectar sources in March, or October? Plant your native flowers so that you have a succession of flowering nectar plants in bloom from spring through fall. You can find bloom times for Virginia native plants listed in the Virginia Native Plant Society web site vnps.org. Go for color. Butterflies love bright colors like yellow, red, purple, and blue. You should plant large masses or groupings of the same color so the butterflies can see the flowers from a distance. This

will entice them to fly closer to see if food is available. Butterflies are rather nearsighted. They can only see well within 10-12 feet of a flower. They can however, distinguish colors from a distance. Plant a wide variety of colorful flowers with simple open blooms, so butterflies can sit as they feast. Old-fashioned varieties of flowers often provide more of the nectar butterflies seek than modern, more colorful hybrids. Flowers with large tops like yarrow, zinnias and peonies are very attractive to butterflies. Colorful nectar plants and the butterflies that prefer them: • Baptisia Australis / Wild Indigo Dusky wing • Bee Balm / Swallowtails • Black Eyed Susan / Orange Sulphur • Butterfly Weed / Most types • Coneflower / Eastern Tailed Blue • Daisies / American Painted Lady • Milkweed /Monarchs

Butterflies thoroughly enjoy basking in the sunshine, especially early in the day, and they only feed in full sun. Like all insects, butterflies can't regulate their body temperatures internally. Instead, they rely on the sun's energy to warm their bodies so they can function. You'll see a butterfly perched on a

rock or leaf in a sunny spot, with its wings extended, warming up its flight muscles. When planning your butterfly habitat, think about providing good basking spots in the sunniest areas of your yard. Provide a spot to get a drink. Besides offering sun, you need to offer butterflies something to drink. A complete butterfly habitat will include one or more puddling sites. Butterflies can’t drink from bird baths or fountains. Instead, they get water and important minerals by taking up moisture from mud puddles. Sink a dish tub or bucket in the ground, fill it with sand, and make sure to wet the sand down each day. If you use drip irrigation to water your garden beds, this can also provide puddling sites for butterflies. Protect your butterfly habitat from the wind. The calmer the environment, the more attractive it is to butterflies. Try to place your nectar and host plants where your house, a fence, a group of shrubs, or a line of trees will buffer the wind from your butterfly garden Keep some distance between bird feeders and your butterfly habitat. While creating a backyard wildlife habitat for both birds and butterflies is a great thing to do, you need to think of the predator-prey relationship. If you place a birdbath right in the middle of your butterfly garden, you're providing one stop shopping for hungry birds. Consider placing any bird feeders or birdbaths in a separate area of your yard – away from your butterfly habitat. Don't use pesticides! This one should be obvious, right? If you're trying to support insect life in your backyard, you don't want to use chemicals or other substances that kill them. One of the reasons that we see fewer bees and butterflies now is the prevalent use of pesticides. Pesticides don’t discriminate between insects. They kill the few unwanted pests, along with all the good insects like earthworms, fireflies, and butterflies. The weed killer “Roundup” in particular, targets milkweed, the sole food source of the monarch butterfly. Find alternatives to pesticides such as crop rotation, companion planting and other organic gardening methods. Provide a native pollinator habitat. This is a bit different than gardening for aesthetics. Caterpillars need foliage to feed on, so you'll have to be tolerant of a few leaves with holes, or even plants that

have been defoliated. Some caterpillars will even feed on the plants you intend to eat yourself, like dill or fennel (which are the host plants for black swallowtail larvae). Learn to share. Plant some extra so there's enough for you, your family, and the caterpillars. Provide cover for overwintering butterflies and caterpillars. We tend to think of butterflies as summer insects. Ever wonder where they go in the winter months? Yes, monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico, but most of our butterflies survive the winter by simply hiding out until warm weather returns. Butterflies may overwinter in any of their four life stages. Swallowtails usually wait out the winter weather in the pupal stage, tucked away inside a chrysalis in a protected location. Many tiger moths, most notably the Isabella tiger moth which goes by the nickname woolly bear as a caterpillar, overwinter in the larval stage. A number of butterflies survive the cold in the adult stage, by simply tucking themselves under loose bark or hiding inside a tree cavity. So how can you provide winter shelter for butterflies and moths in different life stages? Hint: don't rake all your leaves. Leave the fall leaf litter in at least part of your yard for hibernating caterpillars. Brush piles and stored firewood also make excellent shelter for overwintering butterflies. Research has shown that butterfly houses are generally not effective. Butterflies rarely use them, but wasps do. Butterflies are more attracted to a natural environment like hollow logs, cracks in stone, loose bark, or a stack of firewood. A word about the Butterfly Bush: Butterfly Bush is usually the first plant many homeowners think of for butterflies. While butterfly bush does bloom for a long time and attract a lot of butterflies, keep in mind that it's an exotic, invasive plant that should probably be avoided. Several varieties of butterflies (like the Monarch) will not lay their eggs on a Butterfly Bush – so you have a food source for the adults, but nothing for the next generation. ❖ ABOUT THE AUTHOR Janene Cullen has lived in Haymarket for 16 years. Create Window Boxes like the Brits BY STELLA VERADUCCIA

T

he English are known for their love of gardening and can be said to have invented the “cottage style” in design and landscaping long before the rest of the world even knew that was a thing. The charming look of abundant, colorful window boxes with a riot of flowers and cascading greens is easy to achieve if you follow a few simple guidelines.

1. First, consider the container. If it’s not already attached to the house, make sure that the one you select is compatible with the architecture and that it’s installed securely enough to support the final weight when filled and watered. The top edge should be level with the bottom of the window and it should be roughly the same width. If the box is already mounted, especially under a second story window, you can do your planting in a plastic liner designed to fit inside the box, and then just drop it in. Whether you’re planting in a liner or directly in the box, there are three critical things to remember, and they are: (a) drainage (b) drainage (c) drainage. Did I mention drainage? Your window box is a large oblong flower pot and, like any other flower pot, it needs holes at the bottom for drainage – if yours doesn’t have them, fire up the drill. In addition to drainage holes, you should also place a very thin layer of packing peanuts or crushed Styrofoam cups across the bottom – this is a light-weight alternative to the traditional gravel base. Then fill the box up to about three-quarters full with fresh potting mix, not heavy garden dirt or topsoil, making sure to reserve

58

enough to fill in the spaces after you get the plants in. Now comes the fun part.

2. Thriller, filler, spiller. This is a popular formula for arranging plants in a window box (or any container), and it all but guarantees success. Put in girly terms, the thriller is the diva in the arrangement: a showy, high-impact specimen which serves as a dramatic focal point; it’s usually a taller, upright plant which commands attention, and it goes smack in the middle. The fillers are the diva’s BFFs: they surround the thriller, making up the main body of the planting and forming a happy, dense-looking mass of color; these babies help create the look of abundance that’s typical of cottage style. Finally, the spillers are the hangers-on: low, trailing plants placed at the front and sides of the box which flow over the edges and hang down; these can be green or flowering vines or any plant with a trailing habit, in colors that complement the fillers. Once you get the plants in the box all nice and cozy, fill any gaps with the remaining

For an extra touch of English whimsy, add a small ornament like a tiny teapot, decorative birdhouse, or miniature garden gnome.

3. As with girlfriends, an important issue in plant selection is compatibility. Depending on the exposure of the window box, the plants you select must have the same requirements for sun or shade. Similarly, some plants are delicate teetotalers that like to dry out between waterings while

garden center to be sure you’re combining selections that not only look good together but also thrive in the same environment. Done right, your mini cottage garden provides charming views from two distinct vantage points: when standing outside and looking at the house, and when sitting inside and looking out the open window (added bonus: gentle floral fragrance wafting into the room.) If you can’t get away to England this year, you can certainly bring a bit of the Cotswolds right to your windowsill. ❖

Come for the views, stay for the wine AT STONE TOWER WINERY STORY BY MARK LUNA PHOTOS BY DOUGLAS GRAHAM, WILD LIGHT PHOTOS

ery recently, I had the wonderful fortune to visit one of the most beautiful wineries I’ve ever seen, Stone Tower Winery, in Leesburg. Stone Tower Winery is a stunning 300-acre property, located on Hogback Mountain. The locals named the mountain Hogback after its silhouetted resemblance to the spiny ridge of a wild boar. The winery itself derives its name from two turrets situated on an ancient fortress in Belgium, where the father of co-owner Mike Huber (with wife Kristi) worked at a furniture factory as a young man. To this day, the Huber family is still in the furniture business, as they own the renowned Belfort Furniture. As for the Stone Tower land, Mike and Kristi purchased the 300 acres in the early 2000’s, from an original 1100 acres owned by Mike’s parents. To get things started, they brought in legendary Virginia ampelographer Lucy Morton who, after an extended period

of property and soil analysis, declared the land suitable for growing wine grapes. In 2009, the Huber’s planted 22 acres of vines, and Stone Tower Winery was born. Over the next few years, viognier and chardonnay would be planted, followed by the Bordeaux red varietals of cabernet sauvignon and franc, merlot and petit verdot. Their first release was in 2013, under the label Wild Boar. That label still exists today, but the true signature of the Stone

Tower wine line-up is its Estate collection, wines that are solely grown, produced and bottled on the property. The winemaking team is headed by Benoit Pineau, whose impressive resume includes head winemaker stints at Pollack Vineyards, in Greenwood, and First Colony Winery, in Madison. Other team members include enologist Preston

Thomas and vineyard manager Daniel Mumbauer. At its heart and soul, Stone Tower is a familyowned and operated winery, and its purpose is two-fold: to provide impeccable hospitality and world class Virginia wines. I believe that both ambitions are well met. Stone Tower’s wine emulation, at least with the red wine grapes, is Bordeaux; but, Bordeaux

is also equally revered for its white wine grape, sauvignon blanc. And with the pursuit of that tradition in the forefront, the Stone Tower Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2017 is a work of art. An electrifying wine, the Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2017 is light gold in color, and aromatic of citrus fruit, flowers and wet stone. Unlike many sauvignon blancs, this wine is fermented and aged for seven months in both new and neutral French oak barrels, as well as concrete vats. And as noted before, as with all their estate wines, this sauvignon blanc is grown, produced and bottled on the property. Next up is the Estate Chardonnay Library 2016. This is an excellent wine, produced in the spirit of the great central Burgundy (blanc) region, Cote Chalonnaise. Grown on a tiny 3.3-acre block, it’s also barrel fermented and French oak aged. There’s no malolactic fermentation used, meaning the acidity remains well intact, as with all great chardonnays, but there is definitely a roundness and textural integrity to the wine that gives it a beautiful mouthfeel of melon and honey tones. In short, the Estate Chardonnay Library 2016 is elegant and expressive.

Rounding out the triumvirate of estate white wines is the Estate Viognier 2017. For my tastes, I’ve always enjoyed viognier that lends itself to the Rhone inspirations of stone fruit aromas, honeysuckle and gingerbread. These wines are round, rich and flavorful, with good acidity and freshness to boot. Unfortunately, warm weather viognier can be tricky, and susceptible to the lateripening shortcomings of being oily, flabby and basically uninteresting. All that said, I think Stone Tower Estate Viognier 2017 gets it right. It’s barrel fermented, sees no malolactic fermentation and is aged in French oak barrels for 10 months. Aromas of jasmine and white flowers are explosive, and the mouthfeel is equally memorable. This is an excellent wine and a great complement to its white wine siblings. And now to the big boy

red wines we go, where Stone Tower really makes it presence known. Across their stunning 300-acre estate, Stone Tower is very fortunate to have all the key elements necessary to produce exceptional Bordeaux varietal red wines; elevation, sun and wind exposure, and high clay content. Paying respects to the Bordeaux’s right bank is the Estate Wind Swept Hill 2016 Red. A resplendent wine, this cabernet franc driven bottling is full of ripe red fruits, cedar and dried blueberry aromatics, as well as hints of red currant, lilac and forest floor. It has a wonderful herbaceous quality to it, and the supporting merlot rounds it out with a lovely mid-palate softness. There is structure as well, thanks to small, yet worthy amounts of cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. The wine is aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 50%

of them new, making for silky tannins and a well sustained finish. Not to be outdone is the fabulous Hogback Mountain 2016, Stone Tower’s signature wine. An absolute showcase for the property’s cabernet sauvignon, this left-bank inspired wine is powerful, majestic and refined. It’s complemented with merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot, giving it silk, grace and depth. Hogback Mountain’s inaugural vintage was the 2013 bottling and it earned a rightful place in the Governor’s case for that year’s Governor’s Cup. Like the Wind Swept Hill bottle, Hogback Mountain 2016 is aged 20 months in barrel and can be rested for a solid decade, if you choose to wait that long to enjoy it. The wines and views at Stone Tower Winery offer a memorable encounter that every wine lover and scenery enthusiast will want to enjoy time and again. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! ❖

LUCKY NUMBER 13 Prince William County’s 13th high school is under construction near Jiffy Lube Live amphitheater and will service the Gainesville and Bristow area beginning in the fall of 2021. The school board recently approved attendance boundaries for the unnamed school, which

will have a capacity for 2,557 students and is expected to cut overcrowding at other campuses. Battlefield High attendance, for example, will be reduced from a projected 49% over capacity to 11% over capacity in 2021 and under capacity the following year. The

Taste the World in Prince William According to a new report by Food World magazine, Prince William residents don’t have to travel internationally to taste cuisine in other countries. Why? Because large international grocery markets like Todos Supermarket and Global Food are the top providers right here at home. The study’s authors noted that the region’s “international markets” — specialty and ethnic supermarkets that are at least 20,000 square feet in size — continued to add stores in the Mid-Atlantic over the past year and are becoming increasingly competitive, particularly in Baltimore and Washington. Across the region, 124 stores fit that description, seven more than the prior year. Together they combined for an estimated $1.63 billion in sales over the year, an increase of nearly $100 million from the previous 12-month period, the report noted. In Prince William, 10 international markets reported a combined $193.1 million in grocery sales over the 12 months, accounting for more than 11 percent of Prince William County’s nearly $1.69 billion in grocery sales. A MED SCHOOL AT MASON? MAYBE!

13th high school will also redraw attendance boundaries at Stonewall Jackson, Patriot, Osbourn Park and Brentsville high schools. With its boundary vote, the board simultaneously adopted a resolution to provide more targeted funding for older schools in the division.

Prince William County will pay $50,000 to kick-off a study on the feasibility of a medical school at George Mason University’s science campus near Manassas. The Claude Moore Foundation has contributed $200,000 and Mason will cover the remaining costs and conduct the study. Preliminary results are expected in early fall. Mason’s campus in Prince William County already has a pre-med program with available laboratories and the classroom space needed to meet the school’s goal of accreditation by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in 2021, at the earliest. An initial assessment by Mason estimated a first-year medical school class of 30-50 students and the engagement of 50-70 faculty. The study will define the needed investments and prospective sources of funding, as well as establish the clinical networks necessary to support the medical school. The Prince William County Department of Economic Development will further aid the study by providing strategic plans and industry analyses.
