F

ounded in 1976, Appleton Campbell has grown from a single truck operation into a trusted residential service provider serving the community with plumbing, heating, air conditioning and electrical repairs, maintenance and replacements. While the company now operates a fleet of more than 100 trucks, its roots as a family business continue to shape its culture and day-to-day approach as it celebrates 50 years in business.

The business was started by Jim Appleton, who ran the company with one truck and the help of his grandson, Mike Appleton. Over the decades, Appleton Campbell evolved into a multi-generational operation. Mike later took the lead, joined by longtime Vice President Scott Wayland, who began working with the company more than

30 years ago. The family involvement continued as Mike’s son Michael stepped into the role of CEO and his daughter Emily joined the team nearly three years ago. Many employees have remained with the company for more than 10 or even 20 years, reinforcing the strong sense of loyalty and continuity.

Marketing Director Heather Appleton said, “We recently had a videographer on site from our website provider and after reviewing [the video] it made me humbly realize that the employees really think of our office as one big family.”

In recent years, Appleton Campbell experienced significant advancements through new technology and software that enhanced the customer experience, including live technician arrival tracking.

facility on Falmouth Street, bringing hands-on instruction closer to home and strengthening its apprenticeship program.

Extensive training remains a cornerstone of the business, with a focus on both technical expertise and customer service.

Community connection plays a vital role in Appleton Campbell’s success.

The company actively supports local charities, youth groups and non-profits and participates in several industry organizations that contribute to ongoing growth.

At its core, Appleton Campbell is guided by values of honesty, integrity, dedication, commitment and customer service. “These values shape every decision and interaction, from how the company trains and supports its employees to how it serves its customers,” Appleton said.

Looking ahead, the company remains focused on employee wellbeing, recognizing that a positive work environment directly impacts customer experiences. And for a small but telling detail of company culture, Appleton said employees can always count on the office freezer being stocked with ice cream bars.

W

ith roots dating back to 1881, the Bank of Clarke has built a longstanding reputation for serving consumers and businesses through banking as well as lending and wealth management services (including trust services). While the institution’s history spans more than a century, its Warrenton branch is a relatively recent addition, opening in 2022 and quickly becoming part of the local business community.

Since establishing a presence in Warrenton, the Bank of Clarke has continued to expand both its reach and its impact. “We’ve had the opportunity to serve many businesses in the community, as well as bolster our non-profit offering and partner with several of the great local organizations which make a community a better place,” said Andy Surine, Head

of Small Business Lending. The bank also opened a new branch in McLean in 2025, marking its first location in Fairfax County and contributing to increased market share throughout its footprint.

Over the past year, broader shifts within the banking industry have created new opportunities for clients. “As a whole, the banking industry began to see reduced interest rates, helping our clients with affordable lending,” Surine said. The bank also recently introduced an express business banking loan product designed to streamline the lending process.

According to Surine, the new offering provides “loan decisions within days with far less paperwork needed.”

Customer relationships remain central to the Bank of Clarke’s approach.

“Getting good customer service is one of

the most important aspects of [a client’s] banking relationship,” Surine said. That emphasis on personalized service helps explain the bank’s longevity. “There is a reason the bank has been able to stay in business for over 140 years,” he added.

Community involvement is another defining element. The bank has sponsored fundraising drives for both Fauquier Fish and the Fauquier Community Food Bank, supporting essential local services. Looking ahead, Surine shared a clear goal: “Getting voted Best Bank in Fauquier County again – next year and every year.”

And while banking may seem buttoned-up, there is a creative side too.

“Not all bankers are boring,” Surine said.

“I was a drummer in a band for several years.”

Craniofacial Pain & Dental Sleep Center of Virginia

D

r. Bonnie Foster’s Craniofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Center of Virginia has served as a trusted resource for over 25 years for patients seeking relief from craniofacial pain, headaches, airway concerns, and sleep-related breathing disorders.

Since opening in 1999, the practice has grown into a multidisciplinary center rooted in the belief that oral health, airway function, and sleep quality are deeply interconnected.

Dr. Foster’s care spans both dentistry and specialized airwayfocused services. “We provide comprehensive oral healthcare, including general dentistry and full mouth reconstruction, through Warrenton Dental Center,” she said.

“At Craniofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Center of Virginia, we were able to treat and evaluate patients with craniofacial pain, headaches and other neuralgia. In both of my practices, we focus on the importance of airway and breathing and how that might affect our dentistry.” The team offers oral device therapy for sleep apnea, TMJ management, laser procedures for tethered tissues and interdisciplinary patient support.

The practice has evolved over the years, incorporating new technology and expanding its treatment protocols.“Our biggest evolution this year has been expanding our sleep and airway programs through Craniofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Center of Virginia and strengthening medical partnerships to support earlier diagnosis and comprehensive care,” Dr. Foster said.

Looking ahead, education is a central focus for the team at Craniofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Center of Virginia. “Continuing to expand our airway programs and community education, and enhancing

medical-dental collaboration for early intervention [is our goal],” Dr. Foster said. “It is our hope to [educate about] the importance of sleep in all our schools in the area [and] to start lecturing to parent-teacher organizations and others [that] if our children don't sleep, they can't learn.”

The impact of Dr. Foster’s work extends far beyond the clinic.

“Patients frequently tell us that our care has changed their lives, helping them breathe better, sleep better, and live pain-free. They appreciate being heard, understood, and supported through a personalized approach,” she said. “We want every patient to feel welcomed, valued and confident that they are receiving compassionate, innovative and personalized care.”

F

ounded in November 2005, Dominion Construction Group (DCG) provides commercial general contracting services throughout Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC. The company handles new construction, additions and renovations for a wide range of projects, including churches, office buildings, warehouses and retail spaces, working closely with a trusted network of subcontractors to guide clients through every phase of the process.

DCG was founded by Phil Clark after more than 15 years working for a local general contractor. He saw a need for hands-on guidance through what can be a complicated and overwhelming process.

“He envisioned helping businesses and churches navigate the very complex permitting and construction process while also helping them build quality, cost-

effective buildings that fit their needs,” said Anne Clark.

Cultivating connections and building trust are a defining part of DCG’s approach. “We are more than project builders, we’re relationship builders,” Clark said. Many partnerships begin years before construction starts, with DCG supporting site selection, design and permitting while bringing together local designers and subcontractors to reduce stress and create cost savings through collaboration.

That collaborative mindset extends to the company’s team. Clark highlighted several employees whose contributions help projects succeed, including Accounting Manager James Lum for his expertise and accuracy, Assistant Project Manager Owen Devine for his steady presence under pressure and

Kat Stoner, who coordinates estimating and preconstruction and supports the development side of the business.

DCG has also made a meaningful impact locally. “As a monthly supporter of several food banks in our area, as well as other local charities, we like to give back to not only help those in need but also be generous with the area that has been generous with us,” Clark said. The company has completed numerous projects in Fauquier County, including The Bridge Community Church, Warrenton Baptist Homeplace, CubeSmart and the Airlie Center Pavilion.

Recognized for excellence with awards from ABC, Nucor Building Systems and local clients, DCG is celebrating its 20th year in business. “We are here to help,” Clark said, a philosophy that continues to guide the company forward.

I

n the early 1960s, John Early was working as a carpet contractor in Northern Virginia when he decided that the long commute from his hometown of Amissville was no longer worth it.

Together with his wife, Lorraine, John founded Early’s Carpet in 1966, operating the new business from their home.

Just a few years later, in 1968, the showroom was built next door and by 1971 the couple expanded by constructing a warehouse attached to it, giving Early’s Carpet 11,400 square feet of combined showroom and inventory space.

Nearly six decades later, Early’s Carpet remains a family-owned and operated business, now under the leadership of their daughter, Sonja Early Betts. Since Sonja and her husband, Solon Betts,

took over management 18 years ago, the company has more than doubled its staff to 30 employees and expanded its footprint to 21,000 square feet.

While flooring and carpeting remain the foundation of the business, Early’s has grown to include window treatments, upholstery, duct cleaning services and water restoration. The company was also recently recognized as a Hunter Douglas Gallery Dealer, a distinction that highlights its excellence and expertise within the window treatment industry.

Sonja’s days begin early—often at 4 a.m.— as she checks emails and prepares orders for her crews. But for her, the most rewarding part of the job is helping customers make their houses feel more like home.

“Customer service has always been at

the heart of what we do,” Sonja shared.

“With nearly 60 years of experience, our team’s collective knowledge is invaluable.

I always tell our employees that if they don’t know the answer, there’s someone here who does. We’ve likely seen it, done it, or solved it before.”

Sonja’s connection to the business began when she was just 16, running errands for the staff. Today, the next generation is continuing the family legacy—her youngest son, Dustin Betts, now works alongside her, while her mother, Lorraine, still stops by the showroom several times a week to check in on the company she and John built together.

“Her goal is to make it to 60,” Sonja said proudly. “She wants to celebrate our 60th anniversary.”

or more than five decades, the Farm Credit of the Virginias Warrenton branch has been a trusted financial partner for rural homeowners, landowners and farmers in Fauquier County and surrounding communities. Established in February 1969, the Warrenton branch specializes in financing rural homes, land purchases, construction projects and, of course, farms and agribusinesses.

As a cooperative, Farm Credit customers enjoy unique member benefits, including the opportunity to share in the Association’s profits through their patronage program. Additionally, through director and nomination

committee elections, members have a voice in how the organization is led, helping shape the future of the cooperative. Unlike traditional lenders, Farm Credit customers are not just borrowers; they are owners with a stake in the success of the Association.

To better serve customers and strengthen community connections, the Warrenton branch adopted a new business model last year. The office now operates by appointment only, giving loan officers greater flexibility to market, network and meet customers where they are, whether on the farm, at home or in the community.

Community involvement is central to the Warrenton team’s mission. The

Stacey plays a critical role in both the daily operations and the long-term vision of the agency. She serves on the Ethics Committee at Fauquier Health and has become a leading advocate for dementia education throughout the community.

She is a certified Dementia Practitioner and Certified Senior Advisor, and over the past year she has led Dementia Friends trainings, helped local businesses become Dementia Friendly and hosted compassionate memory-care education sessions for families and professionals.

Mark has served on the Voltran nonprofit Board of Directors for more than seven years, and together the Harveys support initiatives in senior safety, veterans mental health and dementia education. They also credit their strong partnerships with regional Chambers of Commerce, hospice agencies, hospitals and home-health organizations for helping them serve the community effectively.

“There are just too many to name,” Mark said, “But we never want to forget our entire STAFF. They are the ones who make everything possible.”

Looking ahead, the Harveys plan to continue innovating. They are exploring emerging technologies, including AI, to enhance caregiver training, improve client support systems and strengthen the overall care experience for families.

“Our mission is simple,” Mark said.

“We want to give families back their quality time with their loved ones—not the stress of being the primary caregiver.

Nothing makes us happier than hearing a family say they don’t know what they would have done without us or just a simple thank you.”

ince opening just over a year ago, Gameday Men’s Health Gainesville has quickly become one of Northern Virginia’s top destinations for men’s health optimization. The clinic specializes in testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), weight management, vitamin and peptide therapies, and regenerative treatments like GainsWave and the P-Shot—all built around medically supervised, results-driven care designed to help men feel, look and perform at their best.

A major part of Gameday’s success is its MD-led clinical model. Under the guidance of experienced medical directors, the team trains continually in the latest evidence-based longevity and performance protocols. “We invest heavily in education,” says owner Marshall Carey.

In its first year, the clinic has transformed dramatically. “Gameday Gainesville has grown from a small start-up into a thriving health and performance center serving hundreds of men across Northern Virginia,” Carey explains. “We’ve tripled our client base and built a reputation for real results and genuine care in a comfortable, ‘man-cave’ environment.”

The community’s interest in men’s wellness has expanded rapidly, driving demand for comprehensive services that go beyond TRT. To meet that need, Gameday introduced a sciencebased weight-management and peptide program that pairs advanced metabolic

Now it’s like we’re 20 and dating again.’ Those moments remind me why we do this.”

Looking forward, Gameday plans to open a second location near Quantico/ Woodbridge and launch a women’s wellness clinic in Gainesville. Carey’s inspiration remains deeply personal: “I want to be the man my sons want to be when they grow up,” he says. “I want them to see that their dad lived with purpose, served others and built something that genuinely made people’s lives better.”

or more than two decades, Gibson Home Services LLC has built a reputation for thoughtful craftsmanship and a client-centered approach to residential remodeling.

Founded in January 2005, the company offers small to full-scale home remodeling, home improvement and handyman repair services, helping homeowners bring both big visions and everyday projects to life.

The business began as a true family operation. “We began as a husbandand-wife team—Josh in the field and me running the office and pitching in on projects for the first 4–5 years,” said Valerie Gibson, President. As demand grew, so did the team. By 2007, Gibson Home Services hired its first field employee and by 2014 added full-time office support. Today, the company employs 11 full-time team members,

including seven skilled field craftsmen and a part-time Lead Designer.

Over time, the scope of work has expanded significantly. “Over 20+ years, and with Josh’s nearly three decades of experience, we’ve evolved from handling mostly basic repairs and small remodels to now completing custom kitchens and bathrooms and full-scale renovations of entire homes—inside and out,” Gibson said. At the same time, the company remains committed to helping clients with smaller projects as well.

The past year marked a major milestone with not only the expansion of custom kitchen projects but also the introduction of full design services.

“We also added the ability for clients to purchase all materials through us and our trusted partners,” Gibson said, noting that the goal is a streamlined experience from start to finish. The company has

also added budget-friendly cabinetry options and tile samples to its showroom, with plans to complete a full build-out by early 2026.

Client feedback continues to shape the business. “One recurring request we’ve taken to heart is the desire for all project options in one place to save time and simplify the planning process,” Gibson said. That insight has guided many changes to Gibson’s services and offerings.

Above all, Gibson Home Services focuses on how clients feel. “We want people to feel inspired, supported, confident, and genuinely excited about their project,” Gibson said. Looking to 2026, the team is excited to complete the showroom and continue growing alongside a close-knit group that still finds time to celebrate together, including an annual January holiday party that ends with a memorable toast.

rom custom kitchens to thoughtfully designed new homes, Golden Rule Builders has spent decades shaping spaces that reflect how people truly live. Established in 1987, the design-build firm has become known for combining quality craftsmanship with a deeply personal approach to remodeling and home construction.

What began as a small operation has grown into a full-service company with a dedicated team and an in-house showroom that helps clients confidently navigate design selections. “I started with being the man with the hammer and today employ approximately 45 highly motivated individuals with the same passion for serving, quality design and workmanship,” said owner Joel Barkman.

As the industry has evolved, so has Golden Rule Builders’ role as an educator

for homeowners. Over the past year, the company has focused on helping clients better understand construction costs in a changing market. “Inflation has not only increased the value of your home but also the cost of construction,” Joel said, noting the importance of clear communication throughout the process.

The company recently expanded its services with the addition of a handyman division, offering continued support to past clients and the surrounding community. This new service allows the team to address smaller projects while maintaining the same standards of care and craftsmanship.

Client experience also remains central to the company’s mission. “We have exceeded their expectations and would do it again,” Joel said. Creating a sense of comfort is intentional from the first

interaction. “Each home is as unique as the people that live in [it]. It should always reflect the owner; we are there to enhance it in experience and quality.”

Golden Rule Builders is equally shaped by its internal culture. “Our community has embraced us as well as the Golden Rule Team that works here,” Joel said. Many team members previously partnered with the company as tradespeople before joining full-time, strengthening collaboration and shared purpose.

argie Kuzminski is the Upper School Director for Highland School, an independent day school located in Warrenton with students ranging from Pre-K2/3 to 12th grade. The school will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2028.

Highland opened the 2025–2026 school year with 562 students, its largest enrollment ever. Of those students, 221 are in grades 9–12. “Our Upper School faculty have collectively

Kuzminski’s goal is to inspire leadership in her students. In fact, fostering excitement for pursuing leadership in its many forms is one of her deepest personal and professional passions. She also leads by example. This year, Margie completed a marathon in Alaska (her 57th marathon across all 50 states), a goal she has been pursuing for more than 30 years. Reaching this milestone was deeply gratifying, and it leaves her asking only one question: What challenge comes next?

ony and Karen Harris had worked together at Payne Pools & Spas for 28 years when their bosses, Susie and Kenny Payne, asked if the Harrises might like to take over the business.

So in 2023, Tony and Karen purchased the business’s assets and renamed the company Pool Blue LLC. “Even though we have a new name, we technically are not a new business,” Karen said. “We have the same database in both our point-of-sale system and our water analysis system that we have had since 2005.”

Karen and Tony Harris offer such services as pool openings and closings, equipment repairs and upgrades, renovations of gunite pools, spa service and repair, fireplace service and repair, and the installation of safety pool covers made by Loop-Loc and Meyco. As a

Platinum BioGuard Dealer, Pool Blue also offers free water testing to customers in the Culpeper and Warrenton area and beyond.

Pool Blue operates from a Culpeper and Warrenton location. The Harrises decided to close their Warrenton retail shop in 2023, but due to customer demand, they opened another outlet in the Warrenton Village Center in March.

New customers continue to pour in, as they continue to do at the Culpeper outlet along James Madison Highway.

“This journey has blessed us in many ways. We have since partnered with Robert Revill at Central VA Hot Tub & Spa outlet to bring our customers Platinum Spas,” Karen said. “We also have a very high-quality and beautiful line of electric fireplaces on display.”

n the nearly two and a half years since opening its doors, Studio 22 Salon and Spa has quickly established itself as a welcoming destination for comprehensive beauty and wellness services. Opened on August 29th, 2023, the salon blends elevated offerings with a comfortable, approachable atmosphere that puts clients at ease from the moment they arrive.

Studio 22 Salon and Spa is owned by Wanda Payne-Banks and managed by Cassandra Mauck. The full-service salon and spa provides hair services, medicalgrade facials and skin care, body waxing, facial and full body lymphatic drainage massages and more. Since opening, the business has steadily expanded its team and service menu. “We’ve added additional stylists as well as two estheticians to provide an expanded service menu,” said Payne-Banks, noting the salon’s commitment to meeting a wide range of client needs.

Growth over the past year has also been driven by innovation. Payne-Banks said, “Advancements in knowledge, understanding and technology in products,” have been among the biggest changes the studio has seen. And, to thank returning clients, the salon recently introduced a rewards program designed to recognize loyalty and longterm relationships.

Client feedback has reinforced the team’s focus on care and consistency.

“We continue to get compliments on the cleanliness of the salon as well as the staff ’s overall friendliness,” Payne-Banks said, noting that she wants people to feel welcome and at home when they walk through the salon doors.

Warrenton Ballet Center

O

n any given afternoon, Warrenton Ballet Center hums with quiet focus, music and the steady discipline of classical training. Since opening in August 2022, the studio has become a distinctive presence in Fauquier County as the area’s only Vaganova ballet school, offering structured instruction rooted in tradition while nurturing a close-knit, supportive community.

Owned and led by Artistic Director Ariana Myers, Warrenton Ballet Center provides ballet training for students ages 2 through adults, along with supporting classes such as variations, character, contemporary and conditioning. Over the past year, the studio has expanded significantly, launching several new programs designed to meet dancers at every stage. “This year, we poured our focus into three main areas,” Myers said, including the creation of a Pre-Professional Training Program for serious students ages 14 to 22. These dancers train roughly 30 hours per week while maintaining strong academics and competing internationally.

“They are true role models to our younger students,” she said.

Under the direction of Pam Burch, the adult program has also grown, offering accessible entry points for beginners and low-impact options for those returning to movement later in life. “It is thrilling to see how fulfilled these students are,” Myers said. A new competition track for younger dancers, spearheaded by Sophia Myers, has further expanded opportunities, helping students connect goals to daily training.

Guest instruction has been another major evolution. “They helped our students discover new approaches to technique, innovate their cross-training, and inspired them with introductions to company-level repertoire and choreography,” Myers said of visiting teachers who worked with students last summer. Building on that success, even more guest artists are planned for

upcoming intensives.

At the heart of the studio is a strong sense of care. One parent shared feedback that continues to guide the mission. “Their student felt seen as an individual, challenged to push themselves farther than they thought

they could, and above all, happy,” Myers said. That kind of feedback reflects the exact environment that Myers has purposely worked to create. “We want to always feel welcoming,” she said. “We have a wonderful community of students and families.”

Since purchasing the existing practice in 2008, Dr. Juan-Carlos Caballero has grown the center into a trusted, independent medical practice serving patients across multiple generations.
