Editor’s Letter As we settle into 2022, we are thankful that things are moving forward in this new year. It is already shaping up to be an exciting one. We have a great issue to share with you and our team continues to look for stories that are inspirational and positive with a focus on community. Please email us if you have a great story idea.

Renee and I were fortunate enough to sit down with Allen Sanford, the founder of BeachLife. Being a music lover, I had gone to both festivals and was fascinated with the event not just for the music but also for the beautiful experience that was BeachLife. Every detail had been well thought out and made for an easy and comfortable day replete with great food, beautiful scenery and awesome music. It was a perfect day and exactly what Allen Sanford told us he had hoped for BeachLife, an experience to remember. He is all about serving up memorable experiences at his events and also his restaurants.

I also had the pleasure of meeting John and Judi Bates at their home in Rolling Hills. Thank you to David McGowan for the introduction to this lovely couple. Their “joie de vivre” was infectious and their compound was fabulous. What a fun day we had getting to know them. Judi was a gracious host with an obvious flair for entertaining and decorating. “We had the pleasure of hearing John’s recollections of the past as he thumbed through what Judi told us was his favorite Christmas gift, Palos Verdes, The Great Peninsula. The beautiful photos by Erik Jay seemed to be a catalyst for endless fascinating stories which thankfully were being recorded by the Palos Verdes Estates Foundation for a new project you will read about in this issue.

It’s been another great month meeting new people and hearing their stories. We hope you enjoy reading this magazine as much as we enjoy creating it each month.

Living the BeachLife is as much about good music and good food as it is about good friends and preserving the culture of the South Bay. Just ask Allen Sanford. The creator behind the wildly successful BeachLife Festival, well-known restaurateur, and Palos Verdes native has embodied the BeachLife lifestyle he created and he is expanding the concept and inviting the whole community to join him.

We chatted in the glorious sunshine with the highly driven low-key Sanford on the lawn of the old Malaga Cove Middle school where he was once a student. With an impeccable eye for detail, Sanford has set the stage for a new historic South Bay music experience that is appropriate for people of all ages.

His casual laid back vibe may be just a guise for the intelligent, thoughtful entrepreneur who is committed to growing and sharing his BeachLife approach to living.

When Saint Rocke opened its doors in 2008, it immediately set the bar for live music in the South Bay. Two years later Sanford took the reins of the Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series where he would lead the community event for a decade.

Sanford’s restaurateur fingerprints have touched many beach city restaurants through the years, including three iterations of The Rockefeller, the old Union Cattle Company, Primo Italia, Saint Rocke, and others but the BeachLife festival is different. It’s a labor of love and has become a lifestyle. The idea for the BeachLife festival was not just to feature bands. Sanford was creating a blueprint for an unforgettable experience. “I am born & bred in the South Bay. The desire to do a festival began a long time ago. Festivals can break bands and bring the hottest music to you, but I wanted to put this little formula together where at the end of the formula, you’re euphoric. You’re with your friends in the sunshine, on the beach, it’s ok to eat and drink and music is an essential part of it to me. It’s got its place in that recipe, a big place.”

Sanford says the idea is that BeachLife is for everybody and everybody has their own way of doing it.

“My way of doing BeachLife is surfing and hanging out on the beach with my wife and daughter.

But whether you are a sailor, surfer, skater, or volleyball player, it’s all the same. It’s all BeachLife, and all that matters is the feeling you get when you’re with your friends or your family doing your thing.

That’s what we’re about, we care about the experience. That’s the culture we want to nurture and I like to try to perfect the experience. This can be dangerous sometimes because you can ruin it by trying to perfect it, and you can definitely ruin it by making a business out of it,” he says laughing. “But I find a lot of joy in watching people have fun.”

In his younger years and the early days of his restaurant career, Sanford was all about the fun himself. Without any experience, he jumped into bar and restaurant management, feet first. He met a bar owner whose establishment was not performing at its peak. Sanford offered to work for free for three months.

“My Dad always instilled in me that you prove your worth first, so I told the business owner that if he thought I was doing a bad job, I’d leave. No harm, no foul. So long story short, we became friends and partners. A few years later, the bar ended up becoming quite popular, but all I really did was call all my friends and say hey, I got the keys to a bar. Come down and party…it was madness. I often didn’t go to bed before five o’clock in the morning. I’d wake up at three o’clock in the afternoon and go back to work. We had a place in Hermosa and everybody would come back after the bars closed and it was just fun. At an early age, I learned how to balance having fun while working hard.” At 26 he opened Union Car Company with his brother and childhood friends, his first official restaurant.“Then we built another Union Cattle in Pasadena. We did Saint Rocke because I missed music in the South Bay, which was my first big dive into music and that was received really well. So all of that continued until I hit my thirties. Around age thirty-three, I knew I’d had a good decade of fun, and then it started to weigh in on me that I pretty much maxed out the fun and self-focus. It had been a great experience, but I knew, I just couldn’t see myself doing this for the next 30 years,” he remembers. During this time, Sanford fell in love with and married his longtime friend Colleen. Today they enjoy life in the South Bay with their three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Annika. A private man who loves to philosophize and theorize as much as he loves hanging out on the beach with his family, Sanford studied philosophy in college at Santa Clara University and even has the Aristotle word “eudaimonia” tattooed on his arm. To Aristotle, the word meant the highest form of human good, the only human good that

“ If you think about it, whenever you have a beautiful moment in life or you’re doing something and it’s magical, usually there’s a soundtrack. My love is for experiences and creating nostalgia with people, which I think is really powerful.”

“It was natural. We already know how to do all this stuff,” Sanford realized. “This is just temporary construction. This is what we do for a living. So it was just a knee-jerk reaction to just jump in and go, here’s how we should do it, here’s what we’re going to do. Everybody kind of agreed and we just did it, we created it all just two days before July 4th.” Sanford and his team built twenty-two parklets in a week and the customers showed up.

“We had people calling us saying, how do you do it? So we were really on the front side of it. And those decks, they’re great. So fast forward now and the City is looking at making them permanent, which is kind of a culture change,” he admits proudly. “It was rewarding for me to get involved with the community. I really enjoy it. I guess that’s a sign of getting older because I used to not care and now I consider it kind of an obligation to help the community. He says people everywhere have responded positively and seem to agree the parklets are an absolutely perfect addition to beach life. So great are they, there is a possibility that they become permanent. “That was a very special time for me. It was the eleven members of the Redondo Village Association that volunteered the time to make it happen, and I’d venture to say that those parklets saved at least half of the businesses down there in the Riviera, including ours,” he recalls.

“I don’t want our beach culture to get lost. That requires more of us getting involved. I am interested in being part of the inevitable change while protecting what is important to the community.”

Sanford is also at the forefront of some big changes. In an effort to include the whole community in the BeachLife, (BeachLife Festival is slated to return to Redondo May 13-15), Sanford and his team have announced the addition of a second festival coming in September, which will feature Country & Americana music focused on the central California cowboy surfer culture. He is also opening another restaurant in the Riviera Village next to Rockefeller called BeachLife Restaurant, which he says will be “inspired by the old Chart House, before it was corporate” as the inspiration, and a community center in Redondo waterfront called the California Surf Club, which he hopes will become a meeting place for like-minded people that love the ocean and culture. “BeachLife has been lucky enough to be a part of the Redondo Waterfront revival, and we are very motivated and excited to be a part of the changes coming down there which are sorely needed. At the same time, I think its clear that our community loves the active, outdoor lifestyle instead of movie theatres & malls, and hopefully the BeachLife Festival has captured the imagination of what can be possible down there.” This flourishing son of the South Bay is leading his most authentic BeachLife and inspiring his whole community to come along.

is desirable for its own sake rather than for the sake of others. Which is also the guiding principle behind Sanford’s work and his life.

“Growing up here, in PV, was as great of a childhood as you could possibly have, and there was nobody around. You set out on your bike at eight in the morning and just had to be home before sunset. There were very few rules. I have great memories of growing up here, and most of my friends to this day are people I’ve known since I was three or four years old, “ Sanford shares.

Sanford attended Silver Spur Elementary, Malaga Cove Middle School and he was part of the first class to graduate Peninsula High School.

“My parents still live in PV. My dad was involved in the community when we were young which has inspired me to do the same. He was part of the school board that consolidated the high schools. Because when we were growing up, there were not a lot of kids here, so we had the opposite problem of a population surge. It was more that there are not enough kids.” Allen is the youngest of the three Sanford brothers, all of whom spent their childhoods on the hill. Allen has a deep love and respect for Palos Verdes and the South Bay, and today lives in an old 1920’s home in Palos Verdes that he shares with his wife and daughter.

Sanford is very committed to his work, although his mindset has shifted significantly since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. He admits he has learned a lot in the last few years. He says he is more humble and has learned to shift his thinking. He looks at things differently these days, taking more time to consider all the options before deciding what’s next. Those parklets that have popped up in the Hollywood Riviera and all around the south bay and have kept so many restaurants going, are a project that Sanford found himself involved in during the pandemic.

“We have the Rockefeller in Riviera Village, and I got involved initially because the city didn’t have a cohesive plan. Nobody had a plan early on because it had never been thought of. I got involved by necessity and because of all the hard work that the Board members of the Redondo Village Association volunteered, the program ended up being successful. If I’m to be honest my initial motivation was to protect our business, but I ended up participating in something bigger than any individual – something that was community focused and driven. Redondo Beach recorded a record sales tax year last year due to the parklet program.”

Of course, I was in the three worst businesses you could be in during a pandemic. Restaurants, events, and music and so that all ended,” he says reflectively.

Being the kind of guy that admittedly was running his life at a million miles an hour, the sudden shift, the slowdown, and the resulting lockdown threw Sanford for a loop. Then one day he had an epiphany. “I thought oh wait, maybe we could use public space to offset this thing. So when that came up, I just saw a lane where I could go,” and so he hit that lane running.

Four Decades on the Peninsula

It’s not just the sweeping ocean views and unobstructed city lights that lead people to the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

John and Judi Bates, local residents who have called PV home for more than four decades, found their piece of paradise thanks to their family. “Judi is a fifth-generation Californian,” explains John.

“Her great grandparents are from Redondo so she was born here and we have never lived anywhere else together in the state of California, nor would we,” he says.

John, a highly contributive Palos Verdes community advocate who spent a lifetime working in commercial real estate is enjoying the fruits of his labor these days. When asked about his success in business John tell us, “I have a partner that I got together with when we both worked at Coldwell Banker maybe 45 or 50 years ago. Our business is acquiring property and doing deals. We have built it up today where we own commercial properties, shopping centers, and apartments. We own a building in the Riviera Village called Riviera Center run mostly by our kids. They collect the rent and 16 | PV Magazine | Feb/March 2022

we spend it,” he laughs and says,” It worked out pretty well.”

We met up with the Bates’ in their glorious, eclectic home in Rolling Hills where they shared a bit about their lives. Filled with treasures collected from travels, antiques and religious relics, it was a warm reflection of this interesting and fun couple.

Judi’s passion is design and when asked about acquiring all of these fabulously interesting and colorful pieces, she lights up and says,”I just love going to flea markets and estate sales. It’s so much fun!” You immediately get the feeling that entertaining and family are at the heart of this home.

“We have a big family, there is always something going on here. We have his, hers, and ours for a total of seven kids we have raised,” Judi shares.

“There were John’s two and my two when we got together which was perfect. Then one of us decided we should try for one more,” she laughs. “He said are you crazy, we have a perfect setup. But I said just one. So then, we had three more,” she adds behind her big smile.

weird how did I not know about this back here. It’s pretty incredible,” John admits.

Celebrating two major anniversaries at La Venta Inn, their 25th and their 40th, the family is clearly and happily entrenched in Palos Verdes.

The Bates family lifestyle is admittedly pretty laid-back. After a lifetime of world travel including for a time a house where they spent many occasions with the whole family in Puerto Vallarta Mexico and so many hours on the tennis courts that John’s knee wore out, they are still busy and making the most of each moment.

“The gorgeous views,” Judi muses. “When we lived in Malaga Cove the sunsets from our deck I mean, just wow. We had 30 years of dream sunsets there and now up here it’s just as beautiful but a totally different feel. No matter where I go, when we come home, when we come back it’s just great here. Whether I go into LA or Palm Springs or even Europe, it just always feels so good to come back to Palos Verdes. It’s our beautiful home and community and we love it.”

The couple who clearly display their Joie de vie and bring a smile to their visitors, also share fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and amazingly, all of them live locally.

Judi began exploring PV with her family when she was a child, sharing leisurely Sunday drives along the Peninsula’s winding roads. With parents who always wanted to live here, Judi feels fortunate. “I landed on top of the world living up here and my mom was thrilled and I was so glad she could enjoy it with me,” she says.

The couple, who enjoy so much of what the Peninsula has to offer, are quintessential Palos Verdes people from their lifestyle to their stunning seven-acre property in Rolling Hills. Filled with antiques and fun and unique finds they have curated over the years, their beautiful property features plenty of open space for their animals and lots of cool eclectic areas to entertain and enjoy life.

“This place is booming with activity,” says John, who is fascinated by the land’s avocado orchard.

“We have almost seven acres and about 400 avocado trees. The previous owners had a relationship with growers. It’s cool. It’s not a money-making operation but we do sell them and now they get hand-picked professionally and yield about 12 to 20 tons a year. We take them to Temecula and love to watch the process,” he muses. “It’s an interesting thing to do.”

Long time residents of Palos Verdes the Bates’ enjoy the diverse vibes the Peninsula offers. “We bought a house in 1976 in Malaga Cove. We still own it today. We were going to remodel because it was pretty beat up after the kids and dogs and all the running around, so we wanted to remodel it. But as it turns out rather than renting a place for two years we thought we would buy another place too and we just liked it up here,” says Judi.

John agrees. “We decided we would buy one place and flip it back in 2004 and we bought this house. After we got started on it, we realized how peaceful it was and so calm with no neighbors in sight plus there was lots of space for our animals.

We decided that we just couldn’t leave,” he says.

Growing up John never had any animals. That changed when he met Judi. Today she says, he helps feed their creatures and has grown to love them. Judi had turtles and lizards and cats and dogs growing up. “Now we have a couple of horses, little mini horses, a pig, goat, chickens and a couple of rabbits and dogs.”

The couple enjoys holidays at home with the whole family and every single day living on the Peninsula. “The virtues of the area are pretty obvious as compared to anyplace else in the world really, I mean we absolutely love Palos Verdes,” John laughs. Palos Verdes Estates is a great city as is all of the Peninsula. We didn’t know much about Rolling Hills in the early days because you don’t have a reason to just drive around. Our kids had friends back here and I came behind the gates a couple of times and thought wow that’s

New Project Documents History with Help from Longtime Residents The PVE Foundation kicked off this new exciting project in February with longtime PV residents John and Judi Bates. During the time they lived in PVE, John had been instrumental in helping save the Palos Verdes Beach Club, once known as the Roessler Pool. His fundraising, project management and visionary leadership were key factors of the success of this project. His contributions along with others at that time have made it possible to have this historical landmark continue to be a beautiful and useful gathering place for our community.

The PVE Foundation is pleased to capture this and other stories for generations to come. This is an important factor in “honoring our history” and allowing future generations to know the struggle and victories that past generations have encountered to keep our City unique and beautiful.

This story and others will be available through audio and video through the PVE Foundation website in the future.

John Bate’s story will be featured at the PVE Foundation Inaugural Gala on March 5th and available to the public soon.

The Foundation is proud to be able to honor our residents who have contributed to the rich history of our city through this special project.

The PVE Foundation has been on the fast track for making a difference for Palos Verdes Estates and its residents.

Formed a little over two years ago, the Foundation has a number of projects and events already on its list of accomplishments. Most notably is the recent restoration of the Farnham Martin Fountain, at the Malaga Cove Library.

The working statement of the Foundation is “honoring our history, securing our future.” To carry forward this mission, a new project has been launched to document the stories and contributions of longtime residents of Palos Verdes Estates.

The Farnham Martin Fountain Yesterday and Today Written by Cin d y D o n n e l l y

The Farnham Park Fountain is the focal point of the Farnham Martin Park that adjoins the Malaga Cove Library. If you raised your children in the area, you may have found yourself exploring the park and fountain after a visit to the library, or perhaps enjoyed a moment of reflection or even a picnic at this scenic spot. But did you ever wonder about how it came to be or why it is named after Farnham Martin?

The park was one of the ongoing efforts of The Palos Verdes Project as it strived to build a new community on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It was built in 1928, and pre-dates the construction of the Malaga Cove Library. It is the only landscaped park in the city of Palos Verdes Estates and the fountain is the oldest in the city. The nationally-revered Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm were hired by the Palos Verdes Project to design and build the park and to create the landscape design and its unique water feature. Important aspects of the park include the use of local Palos Verdes stone for the fountain and stairs, along with the use of plants ideally suited to the local climate and grown in a Palos Verdes on-site nursery. The park has many of the characteristics typical of Olmsted parks.

The park’s namesake, Farnham Martin, had worked for the Olmsted firm since 1908 and served as the first superintendent of parks in the Palos Verdes Homes Association. Martin oversaw planting and landscaping throughout the city and managed the on-site nursery, as well as parks and playgrounds for the city. He also lived in the community and was known for organizing recreation opportunities and parties for the residents. Tragically, he was killed in a traffic accident in Torrance in December of 1928, and it was decided that the park would be dedicated to the Farnham Battles Martin Memorial Park in honor of his many contributions to the Palos Verdes community. The park was dedicated in January of 1929 in what must have been a bittersweet ceremony.

The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, joining the neighboring Malaga Cove Library and Art Gallery. For nearly a century, residents and visitors enjoyed this hidden gem, but visitors over the past decade were not able to fully enjoy the fountain as it had fallen into disrepair. However, it is not the end of the fountain’s life quite yet. Read on to see how the PVE Foundation is about to end the long dry spell.

After existing for more than 10 years in disrepair, The Farnham Martin Park Fountain next to the Malaga Cove Library has been restored. The Palos Verdes Estates Foundation, an independent, nonprofit organization that has been established to make lasting community impact across generations, chose this project as part of their ongoing effort of “honoring our history, securing our future.”

Karen Logan of the PVE Foundation leadership team recently indicated that the foundation looks for projects that incorporate beautification, historical restoration, and safety. The fountain had not been working for some time and the repair work will fix cracks, bring it up to code, correct electrical issues and restore the stones to their original look.

A fundraising drive was started in October of 2021 and donations came from both inside and outside of the city, from current and former residents. Some donations arrived with a personal note explaining what the fountain meant to them and expressing how they wanted it to continue to be enjoyed by future generations. In addition to restoration, the funds raised will also help to maintain the fountain to ensure longevity of the beautiful and historical water feature.

The timing of the fountain restoration is exciting as there is currently a heightened recognition of the Olmsted Brothers’, the architects of the fountain and park, projects and their legacy happening across the country. In addition, Palos Verdes Estates will soon celebrate its centennial and the fountain flowing again will add to the festivities.

Excited to be Back in the Classroom Teaching and Nurturing Written by Mel a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

In the past two years, defined by uncertainty and unpredictability one thing is for sure, the face of education has changed forever.

As we have seen right here on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on students and teachers. We all know that the coronavirus created a mass disruption of schooling in the spring semester of the 2019-20 school year.

The magnitude and speed of school closures were unprecedented and although all the consequences are still murky, the importance of students learning in a classroom alongside their peers and the role of the teacher have become crystal clear.

Educators in Palos Verdes are excited to be back in classrooms and engaging, in person, with their students once again. There is no question that classrooms are more than a vehicle for learning. They offer friendship and community, and they give many students a safe place to socialize and grow.

Today, our classrooms might look a little different but school is still happening and kids are still learning in large part thanks to the tireless efforts of teachers. Katie Rieder, a second-generation Palos Verdes teacher who was born, raised, and educated in PV currently teaches 6th grade Language Arts at Miraleste Intermediate. She has been teaching for a dozen years, is grateful to be back in the classroom full time, and feels especially gratified for the resilience of her students.

“I realized at the beginning of this whole thing that curriculum, though important, is not the whole focus and shouldn’t be. Focusing more on social and emotional development has really helped the kids feel safe and to advance in the curriculum,” Rieder says. “There is a hunger to be back in the classroom and a hunger to learn at an even greater pace now, that I haven’t seen before and I wasn’t anticipating,” she says happily.

A recent survey by the National Education Association found that the majority of educators felt under-prepared to teach online when the pandemic forced them out of the classrooms in March of 2020. In 2022, that same survey revealed teachers are extremely confident about being back in the classroom in person. We spoke to several teachers and support staff who work for the Palos

Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and the majority feel supported by parents and the administration. Teachers say a lot of that confidence to return to the classroom comes from safety measures that were put in place and also from their overwhelming commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.

“Well I am definitely more confident in my use of technology and so are the kids,” says Lisa Anne Larkin a Palos Verdes elementary school teacher who has spent time working with third and fourth graders at three different PVPUSD schools. Despite the tumultuous year teachers agree that the use of technology is definitely a positive outcome of the pandemic and will pave the way for future classrooms that are high tech. When on Friday, March 13, 2020 (yes it was Friday the 13th) schools shuttered buildings and went online there was no infrastructure in place and no training for teachers but just like their students, teachers are learners and they figured it out quickly.

One of the overwhelming guidelines for teachers, who took it to heart to help students in every creative way possible, was to just give a lot of grace.

“The expectations at that time were anyone’s guess. We just wanted our students to keep learning,” says Larkin.

Josef Rieder, a Palos Verdes born and raised music and social studies teacher who has spent time teaching both middle school and high school students here on the hill, says he has happily taken some of the lessons of remote learning back to his classroom where he is thrilled to be, every day.

“This is my community and I value the fact that I can work in my community and contribute to it in a positive way,” he says. “The kids are doing a fantastic job. They’re being asked to do a lot and they’re doing it, every day. Against all this background stress that they have to deal with like, masks and tests and being called out of class for contact tracing and all of that. So, there’s a lot going on. In addition to the normal day-to-day stress of school, these kids are just having to deal with a lot and I’m proud of them for just being able to handle it because it’s not easy,” explains Rieder who uniquely understands his students and where they come from. Rieder’s mother and sister are also PVPUSD educators. ”These kids still need support, because it’s not like the last two years are just going to disappear from memory. I went to school here. So I feel I have a little bit of a sense of things,” he says, “but it’s good to be back. It’s fantastic. We have so many great things on campus. I feel lucky because I get to deal with work I enjoy on a daily basis. Being in

school is great. Working from home is like purgatory for me. It’s not that every day at school is easy but I get to make music and the staff is great and the students, it’s good,” he says, definitively.

Some key things became clear as the pandemic wears on: Going to school in-person is how students learn best. Teachers are supporters, mentors, helping hands and resource specialists. Schools are more than a place to learn. They’re also safe places to be while parents are working. We know that schools support kids’ physical, mental, social, and emotional health and with proper safety measures, schools are doing a great job of limiting the spread of the virus. Teacher, Katie Rieder is exhausted and proud and feels uplifted by the work she and her colleagues are doing.

“I wish every parent knew how much we love their students and how much we give of ourselves our minds and bodies and everything in order to make their kids’ experience the best. I put in so many hours. Not for kudos but because I want the kids to have the best, most comfortable, and nurturing experience they can have in my class with as little stress as possible. If I could tell parents anything I’d say that we’ve been working nonstop in order to make that happen and it hasn’t gotten easier in fact it’s gotten harder,” Rieder explains passionately. “Honestly we were creating everything from scratch. Now, we have great online resources and paper resources and the challenge is trying to figure out what the best combination of those is, to keep students engaged, and also to make sure no one is falling behind. So it’s just a whole new ballgame. But we have been forced to pivot so many times so I’m definitely more confident in my choices now,” she says and with a glimmer in her eye it is clear this teacher and her teammates across the district are hitting the ball out of the park and keeping students in class, learning and engaged.

Rylie Neema: A Baker on the Rise Written by M e l a n i e M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

Eleven-year-old Rylie Neema loves baking and has been doing it almost her entire young life. Particularly passionate about desserts, Rylie recently started her own pastry business, On Pointe Pastries.

Her culinary journey began due to an unexpected obstacle in dietary needs: a milk allergy. This allergy forced her mom to get creative early. By the time she was one and a half, Rylie was already a helpful hand in the kitchen, assisting her mom in baking bread and muffins. By the time she was six years old, she could bake on her own.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Rylie decided to hone her craft and perfect her baking skills while she stayed home. She was able to dedicate all her time to baking for once, as she is usually occupied playing soccer, dancing at Fusion Dance Studio, being a Girl Scout and attending Montemalaga Elementary School.

“I do want to someday go to some kind of culinary school,” Rylie said. “I want to cook just because I like to stay busy. It’s not like work to me. It’s relaxing and fun.”

Rylie has attended online and in-person baking classes from talented, and some famous, chefs. When she begins to build her customer base, Rylie said she hopes to give back to other people.“I’m going to be donating a portion of my revenue when I get revenue because I like giving back,” Rylie said. “Meals on wheels is one of the organizations I like.”

In the near future, Rylie plans to sell her pastries at a farmers market. Rylie’s dream is to participate in the Kids Baking Championship and win.

Rylie’s Lemon Pound Cake Pound Cake Ingredients: 3 cups all purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off with a knife ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup buttermilk or low fat milk 2 tablespoons grated lemon zest, packed 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, softened 2¼ cups granulated sugar, plus more for the pan 3 large eggs

Syrup Ingredients: ¼ cup water ¼ cup granulated sugar 1½ tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Glaze Ingredients: 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Baking Directions: • Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C) •In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt.

•In another medium bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, lemon zest and lemon juice.

• For this next step, use an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or a hand mixer if an electric mixer is unavailable). In the attached bowl (or a large mixing bowl), cream the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy (3 to 4 minutes). Scrape down the sides of the bowl and beat in the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl again.

• With the mixer on low speed, beat in one quarter of the flour mixture, then one third of the buttermilk mixture. Beat in another quarter of the flour, then another third of the buttermilk mixture. Repeat with another quarter of the flour and the remaining buttermilk mixture. Beat in the remaining flour mixture. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, and give a quick mix to make sure all of the ingredients are well incorporated.

• Thoroughly grease a 10-inch bundt pan with nonstick cooking spray or vegetable shortening and be sure to get into all the crevices. Coat the greased pan generously with granulated sugar, making sure the entire surface of the pan is evenly coated.

• Spoon the thick batter into the prepared bundt pan and smooth with a rubber or silicon spatula.

• Bake for 65 to 75 minutes, or until the cake is golden and a tester comes out clean.

• Set the cake on a cooling rack. Carefully run an offset spatula or table knife around the edges of your pan, between the pan and the cake, to loosen the cake from the pan. Cool the cake in the pan for no more than ten minutes.

• Combine the water and sugar in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon juice.

• Invert the warm cake onto a cooling rack.

• Slip a large piece of parchment paper, aluminum foil, paper towels or plate under the rack for easy clean-up.

• Slowly brush the hot syrup over the cake, letting it soak in. Allow the cake to cool completely for about one hour.

• When the cake is cool, carefully transfer it to a serving platter.

• In a medium bowl, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar and lemon juice. Add more confectioners’ sugar or lemon juice as necessary to make a thick but pourable glaze. It should be the consistency of molasses or honey. Spoon the glaze over the top of the cake, letting it drip down the sides. Allow the glaze to harden at room temperature for about 10 minutes.

• Slice the lemon pound cake, serve and enjoy!

Alexander Chang Setting Big Goals

After receiving a rare invitation to train with a top German soccer academy, Palos Verdes teen Peter Alexander Chang hopes to make his mark overseas.

Chang is a sophomore at Palos Verdes High School and plays for the varsity soccer team. This past summer, he caught the attention of former Bundesliga player, Marcel Lowitsch, who now lives in Los Angeles. Lowitsch recommended Chang to the top-tier Bundesliga Youth Academy, Rot Weiss Essen. In January, Chang completed a trial training with the team and was invited to come back this summer.

“It was an amazing and rare opportunity,” said Chang.“The level of play is very high in Germany, and I feel fortunate to have been invited back. My goal is to someday play soccer as a professional, so this was an important chance for me to get noticed.”

Chang attended daily training sessions with Rot Weiss Essen and watched several of their games.

He also took part in private athletic sessions with Bundesliga professional trainers.

“I got really good feedback on my ball skills, but one area that the coaches want me to focus on is becoming physically stronger,” said Chang. “That’s what I’ll be focusing on for the next few months.”

Peter Alexander Chang is one of a few South Bay players that Lowitsch has taken an interest in.

“There are a lot of talented kids in the U.S.,” said Lowitsch.“In Germany, people think that it’s only American football, basketball and baseball that interest young people here. That just isn’t true. I see a lot of potential in these American kids and want to give them the chance to showcase their skills.”

A long-standing tradition at the Seahorse Classic is the charming Scottish bagpiper at the start of the tournament.

It’s All Fore the Children

Since 1990, many South Bay golfers have gathered at Palos Verdes Golf Club to participate in the annual Seahorse Classic Golf Tournament, now impressively in its 32nd year. Run by the Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital (PCCH), this popular little tournament by the sea has raised much needed funds over the years for the young patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA).

Teeing up the Idea

Since 1957, PCCH had been running the very successful annual Portuguese Bend National Horse Show —the year-long solitary focus of the committee and arguably the backbone of the group’s identity as a non-profit organization. In 1990, a few long-time Committee members called “sustainers” were looking for a project to keep themselves busy, since most of the major horse show duties were taken up by the newer “active” members. Lo and behold, they discovered that golf tournaments presented a relatively untapped fundraising option for the group and suggested that PCCH hold one run exclusively by PCCH sustainers to raise even more money for CHLA during the spring each year.

Worth a Shot

It’s no small surprise that the idea was initially met with some resistance, as it didn’t seem to fit into the group’s singular horse show tradition. But Suzie Farman and Sally Grischy, the drivers of the idea and two of the first golf chairs of the event, never gave up. “We were like salmon swimming upstream,” laughs Farman. “We had to work very closely with the board, and eventually everyone agreed that it was a great opportunity.”

An Ace in the Hole

The sustainers ramped up quickly, cleverly modifying their beloved horse show seahorse logo with a golf ball and greens flag and officially naming the annual event the “Seahorse Classic.” The first tournament was held at the Rolling Hills Country Club and featured a shotgun best ball format complete with a whopping $100,000 hole-in-one opportunity (courtesy of Prudential Bache Securities), as well as two enticing closest to the pin prizes sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales and American Airlines. “The first tournament was very homegrown. Back then a lot of singles and doubles would enter requiring us to work out handicapping for the foursomes. There was no dinner or silent auction, but we ended with a fun cocktail party,” recollects Karen Learned, PCCH Archives Chair and two-time Seahorse Classic Chairman. By any scorecard, the inaugural Seahorse Classic was a tremendous success for CHLA that year and indeed proved that the forward-thinking ladies of PCCH had truly teed up a winner with a special golf tournament that was here to stay.

Last year, the Schenasi family added one new furry friend to their clan. Laura and Marc, along with Todd and Erisa, brought home Happy, a labradoodle to join their home of three other dogs.

Where and why did you get your pet?

Erisa got him from a friend…she had never owned a dog. He was adorable and she desperately wanted a puppy. She never knew how large he would be.

Everybody told her not to get a dog.

Is there a story behind its name?

His name originally was Marlo because he was the mellowest out of the siblings. The name was changed to Happy because he is always happy and brings happiness to all around him.

Does Happy have any special quirks or talents?

He loves being surrounded by pillows and playing fetch games. When he gets really happy, he actually smiles. He loves water, especially chasing the water from the hose and the dog water bowl.

Tell us a funny story about Happy.

When he was at Marc’s work, he was acting receptionist and later decided he wanted to be the executive director. Of course, he had to take a nap during the day in the big green chair.

What do you like best about your pet?

Happy has a lot of character, a quirky personality and loves being around people.

Helping parents of autistic children redefine how they understand autism and make decisions about their child’s care from a modern, positive perspective.

Danielle discovered her passion for working with autistic individuals at a young age. As a member of the Palos Verdes National Charity League, Danielle regularly volunteered with different groups in the community. Danielle knew she found her calling after volunteering at her first event with (what is now known as) The Friendship Foundation, an organization that fosters friendships between individuals with developmental disabilities and their neurotypical peers. Throughout high school, Danielle served as president of the Friendship Circle club at PVHS and volunteered close to 1,000 hours with the organization. By her senior year, Danielle’s experiences and friendships made the decision to pursue a career as a speech language pathologist (SLP) specializing in autism an obvious choice.

While working as a SLP, Danielle was often one of the first providers working with families after their child received an autism diagnosis and she quickly realized that overwhelmed families were regularly left on their own to learn about the diagnosis, navigate therapies and resources and make potentially life-changing decisions about their child’s

care. Because Danielle spends a majority of her free time seeking out the most up-to-date resources for supporting autistic children, she knows how much misinformation and negative, deficits-based material was being presented to parents.

Danielle realized that she had to help more families understand neurodiversity and feel confident in making individualized, strengths-based choices for their child. This led Danielle to start her own company offering collaborative coaching for parents with young autistic children. She guides families through individualized coaching and education, shares trustworthy and up-to-date resources and acts as a liaison between all of the professionals on a child’s team to bridge any gaps in a child’s care. If I die, will my children receive their entire inheritance on their 18th birthday?

When minors receive an inheritance outside of a trust, the inheritance is usually managed through an expensive court supervised guardianship proceeding. Upon the minor turning 18, the proceeding terminates, the child receives the remainder of the inheritance outright and free of trust and Pearl Jam is hired to celebrate the child’s birthday with 100 of his/her closest friends.

How do we avoid a court supervised guardianship? How do we prevent our children from receiving windfalls at 18? How do we involve a third party to make sure a child’s spouse does not exert undue pressure over the separate property inheritance?

One answer is: Sprinkling Trusts.

A common sprinkling trust holds the majority of the child’s inheritance in the trust until the child attains a certain age which is often between 25 and 35. Prior to the child reaching the termination age, the successor trustee will sprinkle money out to the child for his or her health, education, maintenance and support. This standard can be broadened and can provide for a more liberal use of the trust funds if desired.

In some families, there are many children of different ages and/or different needs. In such a circumstance, we often create Family Pot Trusts that keep the trust estate in one big fund until a minimum age so that the youngest and/or neediest of the children have what they need to make it to that minimum age. Once all children have reached the minimum age, the remainder of the trust assets are distributed to sub-trusts or outright to the beneficiaries depending on the parents’ wishes.

Most of my clients believe that a windfall at 18 can stifle motivation and lead to unintended consequences. I don’t disagree and that is why I am a big fan of sprinkling trusts.
