Happy Fall Palos Verdes!

Fall is officially here and seeing all of the fun Halloween decorations around Palos Verdes is a heartwarming indication that the community is excited for this holiday season. We continue to be amazed at the incredible support we are getting for the magazine. It has been a challenging two years to get through but we did it! Our magazine continues to grow and get better with each issue. We have a amazing PV Magazine team and it is expanding. We just welcomed on a new graphic designer, Lane Bullard, as well as one of our own community members, Melani Morose Edelstein, who is our new copy editor and writer.

This month we feel honored to feature the incredible Renee Capozzola who is making history with her award winning underwater photography. We featured her photo on the cover as well as a beautiful spread of some of her other breathtaking photos. You will be amazed! We also checked in with Cris Bennett of Good Stuff and had a great conversation with him and learning that good stuff has always been at the core of what he does, beginning with naming his restaurant and he continues to live by his motto which is seen on his some of his new t-shirt branding, “do good.”

We have so many interesting and creative people in this community and we hope to continue to share and introduce you to them. We’d love to hear your story. Please share it with us. Cris Bennett is all about the good vibes and his life is a testament to his motto, Eat Good, Do Good, Live Good.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula has a way of imprinting itself on the heart. Generation after generation of families gravitate to the hill. PV offers a unique twist on suburbia and an extraordinary place to raise kids and live peacefully. So many different kinds of people live and work amongst us and the reasons they love PV are as varied as they are.

Take Cris Bennett, the venerable owner of Good Stuff restaurant. “There is just a different vibe up there. I really like PV, I really do,” says Bennett.

“It’s peaceful and quiet and safe and I really love the dark. I love the darkness of PV a lot. It’s so cool. At first it’s freaky but then it’s so dark and so peaceful,” he explains with a nostalgic smile.

“Compared to the beach cities it’s just so peaceful, quiet and safe. Really. When I first went back to Hermosa it was so loud and bright. I couldn’t sleep,” he says laughing.

The first Good Stuff opened in 1979 and today Bennett operates four successful locations in Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and El Segundo. “It’s my passion. I love my customers and I get to know all my staff and its family. We serve a healthy meal at a fair price, we know your name and it’s important.”

More than four decades after opening his first Good Stuff restaurant and despite a massive unexpected shift in his business model during the pandemic, Bennett and Good Stuff are still going strong. Patriarch of a large family boasting many children and grandchildren, Bennett is happily engaged to long time south bay business owner Dianne de la Garrigue. As the CEO, owner and operator of Manhattan Beach’s Montage Boutique Spa since 1989 she and Bennett are both deeply committed to the community.

“We are both super vested in the south bay. She is the best. She is my person and just understands,” he explains. The couple are on the same page when it comes to lifestyle. While they don’t have immediate plans for a wedding they both love to travel and enjoy hanging out with other south bay residents at the restaurant of course but also at community events like the recent BeachLife music festival where Good Stuff helped feed the artists.

“Just do good, that’s my signature trademark. It’s how I live.”

and just contributed so much food it was really great,” he says proudly. Bennett has always known that food does more than fill the belly. Food also satisfies feelings and when you quench those feelings with delicious healthy food the belly no longer growls.

“I got my first job in a restaurant when I was 15 and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I just always loved the flow of the work. I love the customers and working alongside other people and the hours went by in the blink of an eye and I just always knew serving people, working in a fast paced environment with the public was what I wanted to do and it worked out,” he says.

At a stage in life when a lot of folks start thinking about retirement Bennett admits he loves to golf, workout and travel. He says he wants to spend more time with the grandchildren and he is doing that, but he’s not talking about retirement. When the pandemic struck and the world closed down Bennett took stock in his life.

“It just went crazy, everything went upside down.

My daughter actually had the idea to do something to make a difference. All my kids are in the restaurant with me and funny, they might have all left at some point but they somehow all bounced back, except one, everyone else came back to the area. So the pandemic hit and my daughter was like let’s help, we have to help. So she was instrumental in the feeding of the first responders, that was great.”

Bennett and his team tapped into Good Stuff’s large customer base, emailing over 40,000 people asking for donations. Donate $20 and Good Stuff would prepare two meals for health workers at the Providence Little Company of Mary and Torrance Memorial medical centers. His servers and staff were honored and thrilled to make the food deliveries and so many people were able to engage in making a difference.

“We just flooded the hospitals with food and it was amazing. We had so much support. Our customers are the best, the kindest, the most generous and it just felt like a blessing to feed these people,” said Bennett.

“It was a crazy time, crazy. Nobody ever could have anticipated that. We had 200 donations the first day and eventually thousands. So we did that for about six weeks and then we did a big community food drive and started giving to police departments and fire departments and we just gave away so much food and we got overwhelmed 12 | PVMAGAZINE | October 2021

Bennett trusts his instincts.

“We moved up here to PV and we realized there wasn’t a lot of stuff up here to eat. We went to Red Onion and Mama T’s and I started thinking about how everything was changing and keeps changing.

Like the family dynamic and families needed a place to eat with younger people moving in for the lifestyle and the school district,” and he was right.

Good Stuff Palos Verdes has quickly become a popular dining option.

“The restaurant has so many regular customers it’s so great. People gather here and we use that banquet room all the time. People come out in big groups at the PV location. It’s a tight community and we love it.” With a mutual commitment to do good, live good and eat good the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Cris Bennett and Good Stuff restaurant will always be united.

Renee Capozzola First Woman and First American Ever to be Named 2021 Underwater Photographer of the Year!

Her success in this contest significantly heightened media interest in her photography and resulted in Renee securing numerous television appearances: locally on KTLA, nationally on the Today Show, and internationally with a segment on France 2.

Most recently, Renee was named the inaugural winner of the “Female Fifty Fathoms Award” presented by Oceanographic Magazine and sponsored by Swiss watch manufacturer, Blancpain.

The award was a new addition to the Ocean Photography Awards and the artists in competition were nominated and evaluated for not only their achievements, but also their commitment and ability to inspire others.

In February, PVE resident and PVHS AP Biology teacher, Renee Capozzola, was named the 2021 Underwater Photographer of the Year. Headquartered in the United Kingdom and attracting many thousands of entries annually from photographers worldwide, the Underwater Photography of the Year contest is the world’s most prestigious international underwater photography competition. Renee made history by being both the first woman and first American to receive this tremendous honor.

Other success Renee enjoyed in 2021 included winning the United Nations World Oceans Photo Day Competition: Ocean, Life, and Livelihoods, for her picture of local Indonesian fishermen engaging in sustainable fishing practices. This picture, like many in her portfolio, is a split shot (or “over-under” image) that simultaneously reveals the scenes above and below the water line. Renee also specializes in taking fully underwater pictures of sharks and of turtles, like the one on the cover of this edition.

When Renee is not busy working on her photography or teaching her classes, she enjoys watching youth baseball and cheering on her sons, Donovan (14) and Dean (9), or having coffee with her husband, Damian, at the local Lunada Bay Cafe.

Palos Verdes native Dilan Mistry is an optimist with faith in society and a strong belief in the power of stories. Beginning as a young student in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and continuing today, Mistry has dedicated his life to connecting people and communities to the stories that live amongst us.

The filmmaker, entrepreneur, executive producer and investor began his creative and business endeavours as a Palos Verdes High School student. He began his first start up company, Dilan Mistry Films as a student and quickly cashed in on the idea by printing and selling t-shirts with the company’s names emblazoned down the arm.

His interest in filmmaking and storytelling was honed as a three year member of the high school’s broadcast news program, Live from 205 where he came to believe that everybody has a story.

As a self starter, Mistry is still gratified by the Instagram account he began back in the day @humansofpvhs. Each week, the account posted a profile on a student or staff member of PV High, revealing something unique about them that the community was unaware of.

Education Foundation, simultaneously making a name for herself in the Palos Verdes community. As a result of his mom’s dedication he grew up with a strong support systemof family, friends, teachers and mentors to whom he attributes much of his current success.

“That’s probably one of the things that I’m most proud of. The account is still active and it’s so impactful,” Mistry says. “It really has such an emotional value to it that it resonates with people not just at PV High, but all across the Peninsula. It breaks boundaries.”

“The people that shaped me growing up always encouraged me to dream big and pursue my passions from a really early age.

That’s one of the biggest reasons I started @humansofpvhs, I really wanted to give back and show my appreciation for my community,” Mistry explains. While managing this account and searching for untold stories, Dilan was concurrently working on various projects for Dilan Mistry Films.

Breaking boundaries is important to Mistry due to his deep personal connection to the South Bay community. As a middle schooler, his mom Roma Mistry, retired from a law career to support him and his sister by working in leadership positions at their schools and more notably The Peninsula

“At first, I was literally doing anything I could get my hands on, weddings, holiday parties, you name it. But then I started

The company employed Dilan’s peers in an effort to pair students in need of scholarly assistance with tutors who had taken their exact classes with the same teachers years before.

NativeFour, is a commercial production company that specializes in telling stories of drive and determination. Dilan and his partner/director, Cameron Thuman, work with clients to evoke motivational and underdog stories that define the brands they partner with. Mistry is proud of the work he does. Most notably, he and his team recently celebrated the premier of one NativeFour’s films “The Spirit of AMG: The Silber-Sau” at the famous Chinese theater in Hollywood.

“I wanted to do something where I could be more on the business side,” Dilan said.

“At the time, working on Dilan Mistry Films, I was the one behind the camera doing everything. I wanted something different, an experience where I could manage the business from the top level.”

“The vision for the company is to keep growing it, to keep working with more creatives, sign more directors to our roster and continue to meet really cool and inspiring people and tell their stories,” Dilan said. “It’s all very similar to @humansofpvhs honestly, I guess that was part of the inspiration.”

Despite never having tutored a single student Dilan was able to turn a nice profit out of his business model.

The inspiration morphed into the creation of the second company that Dilan leads today, Intertidal LA, which was founded two months before the pandemic began.

The initial intent of the business was simply to make quick money to put toward films for NativeFour.

“It was super cool to get all my friends paid and to make them a lot of money. We got really creative with advertising. My friends and I would print out flyers and put them all over school in the most random spots like on the security’s golf carts and in the bathroom stalls, and it surprisingly worked really well,” he says. “PV Tutoring Company was my first real taste of the business world and it definitely helped me discover that that’s the world I belong in.”

This realization motivated Dilan to attend Chapman University to pursue his passions.

“In this business, you need capital,” Dilan said. “ I saw this opportunity where we were doing videos and getting asked, ‘Can you get results from them? Can you vertically integrate them?’ Once I realized that I could, Intertidal LA was born.”

“I’ve always thought that the best way to give back to my community for the ways they’ve supported me is to support them right back, and that’s exactly what NativeFour and Intertidal LA do,” Dilan said. “Whether it’s working for the biggest brands in the world or small businesses in Palos Verdes, I’ve found a way to do both.”

Along with the progress he made in college creating and defining his companies before he graduated, Dilan made connections at school that have been integral to both his business and personal growth. Today, he takes pride in maintaining those connections and strengthening them, but especially in passing them along to others, just as he did back in high school.

“The thing that brings me the most satisfaction and enjoyment is taking two people who have no idea that one another exists, introducing them, watching them do something incredible together, and knowing that I had a small part of it,” he says. “That’s what I did in high school, that’s what I did in college, and that’s what I continue to do now.”

Interior Designer

Palos Verdes Magazine recently sat down with Genevieve Trousdale, an interior designer and new resident of Palos Verdes.

Originally from Louisiana and, though she’ll be a Californian for life (and wouldn’t mind a stint in Europe), she will always remember and pay homage to her Southern roots.

What prompted you to start your own business?

I’m one of those rare individuals who knew when I came into the world that I wanted to be an interior designer.

Every step of the way was thoughtful about my career (design school, internships, travels) and propelled me to where I am today. A decade across the globe on assignment to design royal estates, ski chalets, a European pieda-terre and plenty of stateside homes for people that aren’t in the limelight, the significant business skills I gained, strong working relationships with vendors I forged and the “masters” (in design conception, implementation and installation) I earned for a healthy recipe to open up my own studio.

How does your company serve the community (and beyond)?

connecting palos verdes women and highlighting their outstanding accomplishments was the mission of the very first see Beyond the Hill conference, held at the beautiful mary and Joseph retreat center in september. the event, created by pv residents aura imbarus and corry matthews, was the first ever women’s empowerment conference to be held in palos verdes. the two women envisioned a conference to empower female entrepreneurs by bringing together local and world respected speakers, high class entertainment and business leadership. the conference was based on four pillars. mental health and psychology, business and leadership, fashion and lifestyle and fitness and nutrition. many palos verdes based businesses including the yellow vase and lunada market & deli provided food and drinks to attendees. the peninsula education Foundation benefitted by receiving $3000 from the silent auction proceeds. Jenna gaudet, the 17-year-old palos verdes High school student and owner and founder of the picnic chick, was awarded the first ever young entrepreneur’s scholarship.

the pBnHs made its triumphant return to palos verdes’ ernie Howlett park september 10-12 and by all accounts it was a resounding success. after covid forced the cancellation of the 2020 event, this year’s 63rd annual three day spectacle, which was themed “jumping back into the ring with love,” welcomed very happy equestrians and equestrian lovers from all over the Western united states. the pBnHs is sponsored by the peninsula committee children’s Hospital (pccH) an all volunteer organization that raises money for children’s Hospital los angeles (cHla.). since its inception the pccH has proudly donated over 18 million dollars to cHla. the event, which draws national attention to the peninsula, appeals to families and folks of all ages and features not just equestrian events but also pony rides, puppet shows, animal games, face painting and plenty of delicious food and drinks. the 64th annual pBnH is scheduled for september 9-11, 2022.

more than two tons of electronic waste from old televisions, cell phones, laptops, computers, ipads and other items were collected from september 20-24 at middle schools in palos verdes. the initiative was led by los angeles recycling firm gizmogo and the peninsula education Foundation. the value of all the recycled items, with a minimum value of $2000, will be tallied up then donated from gizmogo to the peninsula education Foundation. students, teachers, parents and other community members dropped off e-waste items to palos verdes intermediate school, miraleste intermediate school, ridgecrest intermediate school, and the peninsula education Foundation office. according to the united nations, only 17% of e-waste is recycled around the world. e-waste contains toxic poisons like mercury, cadmium and lead, so thanks to this effort, thousands of pounds of toxic materials were kept out of los angeles landfills. in this photo, students and officials stand in front of a small sample of the collected items donated by the palos verdes community. the mission of peninsula education Foundation is to raise and grant funds to enhance educational excellence for palos verdes peninsula unified school district (pvpusd) students (www.pef.org).

“We were happy to partner with gizmogo to raise funds for the peF and to raise awareness about the importance of recycling to students throughout palos verdes,” christine Byrne, executive director of the peF, said. “We were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response by the community and grateful for the leadership exhibited by our three middle school principals.” gizmogo (www.gizmogo.com) is an online platform that pays customers to recycle small electronic items such as cell phones, ipads, laptops, drones and similar items. “Hopefully this is the first of many such programs that will raise money for school districts in los angeles and throughout california,” James Wang, ceo of gizmogo, said.

roessler point in malaga cove, at 300 paseo del mar, will be the location for the first “toast on the coast” outdoor festival on nov. 6, 12 - 5 p.m., to raise funds for the palos verdes peninsula school district. roessler point, with its lovely views of the pacific ocean, is tucked away in the esteemed malaga cove area of palos verdes estates and a fitting landmark for the first toast on the coast experience. this outdoor event will bring together the community to socialize safely and enjoy the coastal vibes, live music, food and drinks. general admission for toast on the coast is $125 and includes premium food, wine and cocktail tastings, and live music by Fast times, X-Wire, James mcKenna, Xander marsden and the pv Jazz combo. The post Covid dust is settling and it has left a wake of new dawn for many places, giving a chance of a comeback or the unfortunate and unforeseen retirement. There is a scene of “what used to be,” and even though it has “only” been one year, the wake of reality has settled in. Meet Erick Miseroy, school teacher and now operator of VP Fine Art. Erick is a Photography Teacher, encompassing the development of the arts with his students. As a local member of the community, he has his finger on the local pulse. There was a hot spot in town; 439 6th Street; a place where many peninsula based residents would come down to learn the art of oil painting. A lot of hot spots ran cool after Covid, but Erick was not going to allow any more dimming of the arts to happen. He took a brave plunge, stepped in and took over “the place to paint”. Peninsula-wide, VP Fine Art was the place to gather, get the balance of art and a lively downtown atmosphere. Casual in nature, plentiful in individual instruction, one can choose to study art to be a professional, or incorporate it along the way of your weekly get-a-way from the work week. It is truly what you make of it. Never short on good vibes, family or self, it is the place to paint. A few minor adjustments and a quick move across the street to 430 for a better suited setting, VP Fine Art brought back everyone’s favorites—Lisa McDill and Catherine Garneau to provide the individual instruction, respecting the artist’s pace and supporting the level of goal each painter has.

Annual Tennis Tournament, Dinner & Concert The Asia America Symphony Association (AASA) is hosting its annual David Benoit concert and dinner event with silent and live auction at the Palos Verdes Golf Club on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.

The dinner and concert will take place in conjunction with AASA’s annual charity tennis tournament held earlier in the day, and will include an elegant cocktail reception and dinner, followed by an intimate performance by AASA Music Director David Benoit, members of the Pacific Vision Youth Symphony and special guest recording artists.

David Benoit says, “This will be an evening of fun and music—featuring an all-star jazz jam session with a band, including special guests who are national recording artists.

Our tennis event is always a blast and we are thrilled to be able to present it again, after a year’s absence. The funds we raise go directly to the very talented young people in our orchestra—so they can prosper in music. It is truly a joy to work with these future musicians.”

RUSTIC APPLE PIE Raise your hand if you’re scared to make an apple pie.️ Don’t worry, apple pies scare me too! Did you know there is a simplified way you can make almost any fruit pie? It’s called a galette, although I prefer to call it a “Rustic Pie”.

Rustic means plain and simple, so making a pie that tastes incredible but that is “plain and simple” to make should take some of the pressure off. Try it! And let me know how it goes. Hope you enjoy!

Ingredients: ½ tsp lemon zest (½ lemon) 1½ tsp lemon juice 5m edium Golden Delicious Apples*; peeled, cored and thinly sliced (about 1/8” thick) ½ cup granulated sugar, plus more for dusting crust ½ cup packed brown sugar ½ tsp ground cinnamon 1¼ tsp ground nutmeg 1 /8 tsp allspice 1 /8 tsp kosher salt ½ tsp vanilla

1 tablespoon tapioca flour (this thickens the juices so they don’t overflow) 1 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces 1 egg, slightly beaten Directions: • Pre-heat oven to 375°F. • Prepare your favorite pie crust dough or purchase from the store.

• Zest the Lemon. Add lemon zest, lemon juice, apples, sugar, spices, vanilla and tapioca to a medium bowl. Mix gently, coating all of the apples with the juices and spices. Let mixture sit for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

• Take out one pack of pie crust dough from the refrigerator.

• When apples have rested for about 5 minutes, roll out pie crust into one large circle.

• Place apple mixture in the middle of the rolled-out pie crust.

• Place small pieces of butter on top of apples.

• Fold edges over the apple mixture leaving a portion of the apples in the middle uncovered.

• Brush the slightly beaten egg on top of the exposed pie crust with a pastry brush. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon granulated sugar on top of egg wash.

• Bake at 375°F for 30-40 minutes. Make sure pie crust has browned slightly. Once cooked, remove from oven and place on wire rack to cool. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream. Yum!! *NOTE: You can substitute any apple. Just know that if you use a juicier apple, you may end up with a watery pie. Whatever you use, it will taste amazing!

MEET RUBY The Goralik family gained a new member, a golden doodle!

Ruby joined Daniel, Summer and Hudson this summer and is a bona fide teddy bear. Named after Hudson’s love for Ruby’s Diner Oreo shakes, Ruby’s personality mirrors that level of sweetness. Ruby and the Goraliks found each other at a Thousand Oaks breeder after the family was on the wait list since August of 2020. When picking out a dog at the breeder, Ruby immediately ran up to the family, jumping up and licking them in a kind greeting. While all of the other dogs had found shade due to the 100 degree heat, she immediately sprung into action and it was love at first lick.

At four months old, Ruby is extremely loyal and playful. She knows how to read her environment and company. When the family wants to chill out in front of the TV, she immediately finds a comfy place amongst the family to take a nap. When it’s time for play, she is chasing six-year-old Hudson around the backyard in countless circles, and vice versa. A hobby of Ruby’s is being on shoe and sock watch at the house, trying to score any chewable personal items that we have to offer.

One of her favorite pastimes is digging through the laundry basket—anything seized from there is a real treasure in the dog world.

Ruby is part of the family already. Their love for Ruby shows in the special treatment she receives: she loves “Daddy’s Home-made Burger Night” where she will rack up on some wagyu beef and she has a personal tile in her crate where she sleeps at night to keep her cool even with her thick coat of fur. After wanting a dog for years, the Goraliks could not have dreamt up a more loving, loyal, smart, energetic, intuitive and fun dog as Ruby.
