Hello Palos Verdes!

November is here, and it’s the perfect time to reflect on all that we are thankful for. It’s a month where the air is filled with gratitude and the warmth of the upcoming holiday season. In this issue of Palos Verdes Magazine, we celebrate fall with all its colors that seem to be reflected in our recent sunsets.

As I sit down to write this letter, I can’t help but feel immense gratitude for our incredible community. Throughout the year, we’ve had the privilege of sharing stories, events, and achievements that make our Palos Verdes Peninsula a truly special place to call home. It’s a place where kindness and togetherness thrive, and that spirit of unity is what we celebrate this November.

One of the joys of this month’s issue is the delightful collection of recipes from some of our very own local foodies. These dishes are more than just food; they’re a taste of the love and passion that our neighbors pour into their culinary creations. Thanksgiving TABLE If friends and family are the heart of Thanksgiving, then food is the soul. Though the traditional roast turkey still reigns surpreme with over 40 million sold in America each year, it’s also a time to enjoy a cornucopia of different foods and herbs from around the country and the world.

TIPS FOR THE TURKEY Contributed by Chef Robert Bell Mama Terano Restaurant The delicious tradition of Thanksgiving is a holiday founded on celebrating the relationships of family and friends. A staple of this food coma-inducing dinner, cooking the turkey, can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. I’ve provided some time-tested tips on how to deliver a savory, mouth-watering roasted turkey to the table.

Thawing the Turkey If your turkey is frozen, thaw in the refrigerator Three days or so in advance. A raw turkey will yield about one portion per one pound, maximum.

The night before roasting, remove the bird from the package and remove the bag of innards and the neck. Use these for your gravy.

Pat dry the turkey, rub in and out with fresh lemon. Massage the skin with kosher salt and place back in the refrigerator.

The Tools • Have a thin prong meat thermometer.

• A heavy duty roasting pan with handles and a roasting rack for the turkey to set on.

Getting Ready to Roast • Your turkey should be room temperature. Pull from the Refrigerator an hour or so before you roast it • Trim off excess Fat and Skin Flaps • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees • Massage again with extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt and fresh black pepper.

I like to cook the Stuffing outside the Bird. If you prefer inside the bird, Stuff both cavities loosely.

Now tie the legs together, you’re are ready to roast the turkey.

Cooking Times Unstuffed Bird: 12 Minutes per Pound Stuffed Bird: 16 Minutes Per Pound • Roast first 30 minutes at 450 degrees the balance at 375 degrees • After the first 30 minutes, baste with drippings and fresh sweet butter, then turn the turkey 180 degrees. Do this about every 20 minutes • Start checking for doneness about 30 minutes before the estimated time • When the meat thermometer reads approximately 175 degrees it is fully cooked. Remove from oven and let rest for about 20 minutes before carving • Carve and serve

STUFFING IDEAS Don’t be afraid to put a different, delicious twist on stuffing with some additions and substitutions for a new “traditional” dish.

Helpful notes All bread for stuffing needs to be dry so that it will absorb the chicken broth, drippings etc.

Chicken broth should be added to moisten the stuffing before cooking When baking the stuffing separately, generally you need not cover it.

It should be crispy on top and moist below.

The Original Giuliano’s Meatballs

Frances Giuliano’s original recipe contributed by Paul Giuliano Ingredients:

1 pound ground beef (15% lean) ½ pound ground pork 1½ cup bread crumbs (plain) ½ cup whole milk 5 large fresh eggs 1 cup imported Romano cheese, grated 3 cloves garlic (pressed) ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon finely chopped Italian parsley Directions:

1. Mix all ingredients well, incorporating into a smooth, soft mix.

2. Using an ice cream scoop or your hands, form meatballs; fry in The original Giuliano’s opened in Gardena vegetable oil over medium heat browned and cooked through. in 1952. Frances and Gaetano Giuliano’s goal was to bring the tradition of classic Italian cuisine to southern California.

11/2 Cups Penne (Uncooked) 3 Qts Boiling Water 1.5 tsp Salt 8 Oz Grilled Chicken 2 Tblsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2 Garlic Cloves, minced 1 Cup Chopped Roma Tomatoes 1 Cup Chopped Mushrooms 2 Cups Chopped Asparagus 1/2 Cup Chicken Stock 1 Tbslp Butter Salt to taste 2 Tblsp Parmesan Directions:

1. Cook the pasta in a boiling pot of salted water.

2. Season the chicken with your favorite seasoning. Grill. Slice.

3. In a sauce pan, heat the extra virgin olive oil and garlic.

4. When the garlic is golden, add the Roma tomatoes, mushrooms and asparagus. Toss for two minutes on medium heat.

5. Add the chicken stock and butter. Reduce. Add salt to taste.

6. Add the pasta, a little pasta water and grilled chicken.

Cook for one minute.

7. Add the parmesan cheese.

8. Enjoy!

8 oz spaghettini (or your preferred pasta) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 oz pancetta, diced 8 large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1/4 cup shrimp bisque 1 cup housemade parmesan sauce Salt and black pepper to taste 1/4 cup pasta water 2 egg yolks 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Directions:

1. In a large sauté pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic, diced pancetta, and peeled shrimp. Sauté until the shrimp turn pink and the pancetta becomes crispy, about 3-4 minutes.

2. Pour in the shrimp bisque and stir, allowing the flavors to meld for another 2 minutes.

3. Introduce the housemade parmesan sauce to the pan and gently simmer, stirring occasionally. This will create a luscious, creamy texture.

4. To ensure a silky consistency, add 1/4 cup of pasta water to the sauce, stirring until well combined.

5. Cook the spaghettini according to the package instructions until al dente.

6. Drain the pasta, and immediately toss it into the pan with the sauce and shrimp. The rough texture of handmade pasta ensures it clings to the sauce, delivering maximum flavor.

7. Turn off the flame and quickly add the egg yolks and grated Parmesan cheese. Gently stir to incorporate, allowing the yolk to create a velvety richness that harmonizes with the other flavors.

8. Serve hot and savor the culmination of Italian culinary passion. With every forkful, experience the warmth and care poured into crafting this masterpiece at Bettolino Kitchen.

1 cup extra virgin olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste) 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon sea salt Directions:

1. In a clean glass or ceramic container with a lid, pour the extra virgin olive oil.

2. Add the minced garlic, chopped basil, thyme leaves, finely chopped rosemary, red pepper flakes, black pepper, and sea salt into the container with the olive oil.

3 . Gently stir the ingredients together to ensure they are evenly distributed throughout the oil.

4. Seal the container with the lid and let it sit at room temperature for 1 to 2 days. This allows the flavors to infuse into the oil naturally. You can leave it longer for a stronger flavor if desired.

5. After the infusing period, give the dipping oil a good stir to ensure the flavors are well-mixed.

2¼ cups granulated sugar 2/3 cup vegetable oil 3 eggs 1½ cups canned unsweetened pumpkin puree 22/3 cups All-purpose flour, fluff then measure 1 ½ teaspoons Kosher salt ¾ teaspoons baking soda 1½ teaspoon baking powder 2 teaspoon allspice 2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 cup water Directions:

1. Whisk sugar, oil, eggs, and pumpkin puree in large bowl until combined. Set aside.

2. Combine remaining dry ingredients in separate bowl.

3. Alternate whisking in the dry ingredients and the water into the egg/sugar/pumpkin mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.

4. Place batter in lined muffin pans.

(Recipe makes about 24 cupcakes) 5. Bake at 375°F for 12-15 minutes or until the muffin top bounces back when slightly pressed down by your finger.

Well known for its majestic cliffs and unrivaled ocean views, the Palos Verdes Peninsula also features secret hidden gems. Boasting one of the most talked about Chardonnay and Pinot Noir crops in this area, the federal government recently approved the Palos Verdes Peninsula American Viticultural Area (AVA) as one of the country’s newest wine-growing regions.

In 2021 Palos Verdes became only the second AVA in Los Angeles County and the 142 in the state of California.

Catalina View Farms produced their first harvest in 2016 producing more than 650 cases of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Continuing to consistently produce between 600 and 700 cases annually and adding a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reserve to their offerings the local vineyard is able to sell exclusively to local restaurants and markets in the South Bay area. The wine is also used at events held at Catalina View Gardens, an outdoor event space, garden, and vineyard.

The sprawling property is located across the street from Terranea. Five acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes cover the south-facing hillside, which was planted as far as the eyes can see in 2013. Catalina View Gardens Owner Vinter Jim York believes PV’s cool foggy mornings and warm sunny afternoons bring sweet success to his vineyard.

The grapes are grown on the Peninsula. Catalina View Gardens wine is produced in Buellton, California, and sold exclusively in the South Bay.

On October 1, 2023 twelve children with permanent vision loss had the chance to make their own stuffed bear buddy, thanks to a partnership between Partners for Pediatric Vision (PPV) and Vistas for Children Inc. The two organizations came together to host their annual Build-A-Bear event at the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance. The children with vision loss were paired up with a Junior Vistas volunteer, who guided them to each station to create their very own Build-A-Bear. The children were looking forward to this event for months and one of our attendees, Jose M., described it as “the best day ever!”

Kenya M.’s family shared, “This was a beautiful event. It was emotional and sweet seeing Kenya’s bear with glasses and a white cane like Kenya’s. Thank you PPV and Vistas for inviting us.”

Las Candalistas Go Between the Covers with Literary Luncheon On Friday October 20th, over 230 guests dove between the covers to listen to 5 authors at the Las Candalistas fall Fundraiser, “Between the Covers… a Literary Luncheon”. The event was held at the Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Guests were treated to a welcome drink and appetizers and had the opportunity to shop with vendors as well as the Las Candalistas marketplace, which was full of home-crafted and home-baked goodies and over 50 Silent Auction prizes.

Guests enjoyed a sit-down luncheon followed by the much-anticipated conversation with 5 local authors.

James T Bartlett who is a writer, journalist, researcher, true crime expert, and author of The Alaskan Blonde, acted as host and welcomed each of the authors in turn on stage. Joining him were local authors Rebecca Forster, Ruth Stevens, Marilou Ryder, and Wendall Thomas. Guests were treated to a great array of backstories and an insight into the world of writing and publishing. Money raised from the event will go to charities which Las Candalistas supports including Community’s Child, Manes for Movement, Marine Mammal Care, and 14 other local charities.

The sun-kissed shores of Roessler Point in Malaga Cove played host to a sold-out crowd as Toast on the Coast took center stage. Roaring Back to the 20’s

On October 22, 2023 the Malaga Cove Homeowners Association (MCHA) hosted a glitzy and glamour filled evening, “Roaring Back to the 20s” at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in honor of the 100-year anniversary of the first real estate rally on the Peninsula. The event was open to everyone on the Peninsula and the Attendees donned their finest feathers, pearls and fedoras.

In addition to casino tables, guests were entertained by incredibly talented burlesque dancers and a very impressive singer, Sergio Vellatti and his eight piece orchestra.

Gemma Kemps, President of MCHA told us that the event was going to be spectacular and it did not disappoint. From the décor to the music, it was a step back into time. As F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Gatsby himself said, “Can’t repeat the past? Why, of course you can!”

Cancer Support Community Celebrates Wellness

In a remarkable display of community support, CSC South Bay hosted its 26th annual Celebrate Wellness event at the South Coast Botanic Garden.

The sold-out garden party featured fare from over 30 restaurants, wineries, and breweries, drawing 600 enthusiastic guests. The event raised an astounding $428,000, setting a new record. These proceeds will directly fund 200 free support programs each month, benefitting cancer patients and their families.

Diane and Kyle Kazan, former CSC South Bay participants, shared their powerful journey of battling stage-3 breast cancer and their involvement with the organization. Trick-or-Treating at Promenade PV

On Saturday, October 28, Promenade PV hosted a fun filled spooky afternoon for families. The mall was packed with families eager to enjoy the day. Kids were treated to trick-ortreating on all levels, face painting, balloon twisting, cotton candy art and a slide.

The highlight of the afternoon was the costume contest at 5pm with over 50 kids and families participating. The Grand Prize was two tickets to Disneyland!

There was also a pumpkin carving contest with the winner receiving a $100 gift card to the new Game Chest!

The New PVPUSD Superintendent Written by Me l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

Dr. Devin Serrano, the new superintendent of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, practices a people-first philosophy. Dr. Serrano, who has been with the district since July, spends her time building relationships and considering how district decisions affect students, teachers, staff, and parents. She is excited about the future of the school district and agreed to answer some questions so the community could get to know her.

Palos Verdes Magazine: Welcome to Palos Verdes!

Tell us about your career trajectory.

Dr. Davin Serrano: I started my career in education as a paraprofessional and found that I loved working with children. I became a teacher, administrator, literacy coach, central office administrator, principal supervisor, chief academic officer, and superintendent in two very different systems (Oakland Unified and UCLA).

Early on, I knew I wanted to be a superintendent and emulate some of the best practices I had witnessed to make a bigger impact. I discovered the opportunity in PVPUSD and was drawn to the district because I was interested in serving my local community through public education. I knew the excellent reputation of the district and was confident that I could bring strong leadership to the district and continue to build on the many strengths of PVPUSD going forward.

It felt like a place I could lead for a long time to come. I truly feel like this is exactly where I am meant to be and my path has prepared me to be successful in this community. I am excited to be the Superintendent of PVPUSD and look forward to coming to work every day.

PVM: How do you like the Palos Verdes community so far?

DS: In just the short time I have been at PVPUSD, it is easy to see what a special place this is. I love the vibrancy of the community. I love that PVPUSD is a district with families, students, and staff with a variety of perspectives and viewpoints. I have had the pleasure of visiting all our school sites, and the energy and dedication are inspiring. And of course, the views are also spectacular!

PVM: Tell us about your family.

DS: I am originally from South Lake Tahoe, California. I am married and have two children and two stepchildren. My two sons are in Redondo Beach Public Schools, a senior and an 8th grader. My step-daughter is in 5th grade here in the district and I have a young adult step-son in the U.S. Navy.

My family has been incredibly supportive and also had great suggestions through this transition.

PVM: What do you like the most about your work?

DS: I like being in schools and interacting with students, teachers, and families. I love visiting classrooms and observing learning and teaching. I also enjoy hearing from community members about issues of importance related to education. I feel like every day I am learning new things and have the opportunity to lead the district positively.

PVM: How do you spend your free time?

DS: I love CrossFit and practice the sport frequently. I enjoy it because each workout is different every day and I am never bored, and always challenged.

My husband and I work out together at 5:00 a.m. the only time we have each day that is just the two of us. Even though it is difficult getting up early to work out, we enjoy the time together and it helps to set the day in a positive direction. I also enjoy reading and cooking when I have time.

PVM: What keeps you motivated?

DS: I keep motivated by thinking about the bigger picture of the impact I am making. I know that each interaction is an opportunity to positively impact the culture of the district and move us forward together as a team.

PVM: Do you get more done in the morning or the afternoon?

DS: This is a difficult question. I tend to have a steady pace throughout the day, but in the mornings I can usually find a quiet half an hour when I can work uninterrupted and feel more focused.

PVM: What makes you smile?

DS: My children and students make me smile every day!

Many parents on the Peninsula are familiar with Art At Your Fingertips (AAYF) but may not know how it is organized or why they might want to get involved as a volunteer docent. AAYF was started in 1976 by Palos Verdes Art Center (PVAC) volunteers at a time when Proposition 13 had caused budget cuts for many programs in California schools, including art education funds. For over 45 years PVAC has enriched the community with this school based-outreach program which brings arts education to elementary school classrooms. PVAC Community Engagement Director, Gail Phinney, explained that the program would not be possible without the “army of volunteers” for which she is enormously grateful. Each year, volunteer docents attend five on-site workshops at the Art Center where the artist that developed the selected project teaches the docent volunteers, who in turn teach the students the project at their individual schools. The workshops teach the methodology for the project as well as the historical and cultural context for each project. In addition to overseeing the program, Gail was a docent for 15 years and served as AAYF President in 2010-2011 recalling as a parent she “grew with the program, learning about art, and growing in knowledge” adding, “the program has my heart as a parent, you are not just there for your child, you are there for all the children.” She fondly recalls that she had “rock star” status when she would arrive at school to teach, the kids were all excited to do art.

2023-2024 AAYF President, Dara Adams, shared that she grew up attending the Palos Verdes Peninsula School District and her mother was a docent in the 1980’s, she has great memories of her mom teaching projects at Rancho Vista Elementary. When her sons started at Dapplegray, she wanted them to have the same experience which is why she first volunteered. Before becoming President this year, Dara had served for six years as a docent and two years as the Program Design Chair which involves organizing art project submissions by local artists, and most importantly helping to ensure a diverse array of different kinds of projects with different styles and mediums trying to expose students and find what gets them

This year students will have the opportunity to create 3-D moving sculptures, explore color, create Georgia O’Keeffe inspired flowers, work with clay while learning about repetition, and find out how mathematical properties behind linear perspective create the illusion of depth. Dara wants AAYF to excite every kid and to expose students to many different types of art mediums to see what gets them excited, “I love when a project catches fire for a kid and sparks something!”

PV Magazine was invited to attend an AAYF workshop for the first project of the 2023-2024 school year.

The project, “Art In Motion”, was created by local artist Betsy Delurgio and was inspired by the work of Alexander Calder. All the supplies for the project and a detailed lesson plan put together by the program in conjunction with the artist are provided to the docents at the workshop. The handout explains

that Calder was the inventor of the mobile who “changed the nature of sculpture with movement.”

During the workshop a brief overview of the artists is presented and then step-by-step the presenting artist teaches the project to the docents who do the project themselves during the workshop.

All the instructions are provided, and additional resources are available to docents on the PVAC website. All AAYF projects incorporate the state visual and performing arts standards. This project offers some wonderful new vocabulary words and concepts, such as learning about kinetic energy and what a fulcrum is as students put together their own mobile with moving parts. Each AAYF project is accompanied by a reading list from the Palos Verdes Library District with books and resources available at the library that complement the project.

Gail has watched AAYF become a growth opportunity for docent volunteers, having watched many go on to become presenting artists for the program. Others enjoy the camaraderie that grows with other docents over the years as you watch your kids grow up, share stories, and create lasting friendships. Lisa Walstead, a docent at Cornerstone Elementary says about being a docent, “The opportunity to train as a docent for Art at your Fingers tips is one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences we’re offered as parents. It’s a great way to socialize with adults, exercise some creativity, and share the world of art with your child and their classmates. I personally love each student’s interpretation of the subject and how much pride they take in their product!”

You do not need any special background to be a docent, all the materials and training are provided, plus you can enjoy learning and doing the project before you present it to students.
