We are so excited to share our new issue with you. It’s our largest ever – 64 pages! This month, we have so many great stories, a huge Around Town section, and a ton of new local businesses that allow us to continue bringing you Palos Verdes Magazine each month! I encourage you to support these businesses who support us, as most of them are owned by Palos Verdes residents.

What a fun month this has been! We had the pleasure of being a local media sponsor of the DIO Implant LPGA golf tournament at Palos Verdes Golf Club. Three days of great golf and seeing so many local PV residents who came out to support the tournament and to volunteer!

Mother’s Day is May 14th and is a perfect time to share the launch of Patty Sullivan’s new book, Betty White’s Pearls of Wisdom. Patty and Tom Sullivan are a remarkable couple who have lived on the Peninsula for over 40 years, and it was my honor to work with Patty on showcasing her story to the community.

In her new book, “Betty White’s Pearls of Wisdom: Life Lessons from a Beloved American Treasure,” Palos Verdes author, Patty Sullivan presents loving and funny stories paying tribute to her dear friend of 50-plus years.

Sullivan tells readers about White, sharing extraordinary details of their life and friendship. In anticipation of the Peninsula Friends of the Library Literary Weekend and the excitement surrounding the book, we talked to Sullivan to learn more about her life on the Peninsula.

insula. In 1973, a wonderful writer, Derek L.T. Gill (The Boy who Sailed Around the World) invited me, my husband, and our two children to his home on Via Almar in Malaga Cove. He wanted to write a story about my husband, Tom Sullivan. The result?

We fell in love with Palos Verdes immediately and If You Could See What I Hear became a best-selling book, and a major motion picture. There isn’t a day that we don’t thank Derek for introducing us to the beautiful peninsula we have called home for over 40 years.

Our children, Blythe & Tom, Jr. attended RH Country Day, Chadwick, PV High and Bishop Montgomery and are well launched into the adult lives with a firm love of where they grew up. With its spectacular ocean views, clean air, and quality of life, living here is nothing less than a privilege.

In the early 80’s I founded Vistas for Blind Children, developing the “Tom Sullivan, St. Patrick’s Day 10K Run,” which hosted close to 10,000 runners from 1980-1992 in the City of Torrance, raising funds for the Blind Children’s Center of Los Angeles. I am very proud that Vistas continues today, raising money for various children’s charities.

More recently, I have served on the Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation and Community Ministry Boards for over 20 years, and was honored to be elected as Trustee Emeritus.

I am also a Realtor for Vista Sotheby’s, enjoying my career in Residential Sales. My greatest highlight was representing the buyer for Casa Felicia, one of the first homes built on the Peninsula in the early 20’s by the famous Olmstead Brothers who were hired to develop the landscape of the Palos Verdes Project.

Betty White was more than a life-long friend.

We met each other on Cape Cod in the summer of 1968, and over more than 50 years of knowing one another, she became our mentor, adopted mother, and Gram III to our children. We were privileged to share so much life, love, and joy until her death on December 31, 2022.

Palos Verdes Welcomes the LPGA

The eyes of the world focused on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the magnificent course at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in PV Estates as the LPGA’s DIO Implant LA Open took center stage during four spectacular spring days at the end of March.

The LPGA’s 2023 DIO Implant LA Open, which was televised live on the Golf Channel, brought some of the best players in the world to the hill and saw a 20-year-old rookie earn her first LPGA tour victory.

The grand four-day tournament was the culmination of years of dedication and hard work from PVGC members and hundreds of volunteers. Dave Klein served as president of the golf club in 2022 and was instrumental in bringing the LPGA to the Peninsula.

“It was a tremendous undertaking as we focused on enhancing the member experience with every decision,” he explains. “In that light, we began a discussion early in 2021 about the potential of bringing an LPGA tournament to PVGA so the members and the community could see the best players in the world play on our course,” says Klein.

Then it happened. In April of 2022, the LPGA brought the Palos Verdes Championship presented by Bank of America to PVGC. Approximately 25,000 spectators attended the event over four days with Marina Alex hoisting the trophy after shooting ten strokes under par of the tournament.

“The event was televised all four days on the Golf Channel,” Klein says. “This year PVGC hosted the LPGA DIO Implant LA Open with tour rookie, Ruoning Yin winning with a -15 score. Once again all four days were televised 20 | PVMagazine | May | 2023

on the Golf Channel with similar crowds to 2022,” he says.

There are a few other new additions this year. PVGC welcomes General Manager David Stocke to the club. Stocke brings Central Coast experience, joining the team just six months ago from San Luis Obispo Country Club. Also this year PVGC members hosted tour players and caddies and more than 400 volunteers helped make the tournament a success with PVGC members chairing most of the volunteer committees.

The popular Player-Housing Initiative is crucial to the LPGA players’ and caddie’s travel plans. PVGC members providing accommodations to players and caddies allows them to save financially, as well as build relationships with members of the Palos Verdes Golf Club and the Palos Verdes Estates community.

Leading the program again this year was PVGC member Peggy Lanigan. This year, through the Player-Housing program, members at Palos Verdes Golf Club housed approximately 50 players and caddies.

PVGC supports Junior Golf, Collegiate Golf hosting the Terese Hession Regional Challenge, and Klein ads, “Now the professionals.

We feel it’s right for our members, the community, and the game.”

The golf community thanks the LPGA’s DIO Implant LA Open for choosing Palos Verdes and as fans and broadcasters and volunteers and players look forward to the next tournament they all agree, there is no place better for a game of golf than Palos Verdes Estates California.

Ruoning Yin wins first LPGA event at 2023 DIO Implant LA Open at PVGC

Junior Clinic, Fassi’s Friends at PVGC LA Open On Monday, March 28, 2023, the tournament at Palos Verdes Golf Club kicked off with a junior clinic hosted by Fassi’s Friends, the DIO Implant LA Open and the Southern California Junior Golf Foundation. The clinic was led by First Tee-Los Angeles and

Maria Fassi, LPGA Tour Golfer who represented Mexico in the 2023 Tokyo Olympics.

The goal of the clinic is to create excitement for kids around the game of golf. The kids rotated between three different stations and got individual tips from the instructors and Maria Fassi. PVE Foundation Seeks to Enhance PVE’s Emergency Readiness in Several Ways Contributed b y Re n ee Ja co

Every community needs to be ready for the unexpected, The PVE Foundation is dedicated to supporting the Palos Verdes Estates community.

The PVE Foundation believes that it is crucial to have the necessary equipment to protect community members and property from natural disasters, emergencies, and other community needs. To achieve this, they have started a fundraiser to raise money to purchase crucial safety and communication equipment that will help minimize the effects of any such event and provide the necessary support to the residents of Palos Verdes Estates. When a community need arises Palos Verdes Estates residents cannot be solely dependent upon county and/or state resources. We could become and “island upon our self.” The PVE Foundation desires to augment our community resources that will raise funding for safety initiatives that not only benefit the residents of PVE, but also the PVPUSD and our neighbors on the hill.

Since its inception in 2020, the PVE Foundation has focused its attention on providing the funding required to enhance Palos Verdes Estates’ most pressing needs while providing a sense of community that the residents can be proud of. Palos Verdes Estates does not receive the same benefits from the tax-based revenue stream that other South Bay cities receive, so the funding provided by the Foundation is critical.

In just three years, the Foundation has provided funds to the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department to purchase body cameras. “The body cameras have provided an unbiased witness to thousands of incidents and increased public transparency and accuracy of events during police contacts. The ability of our PVEPD to capture video evidence during field investigations is better than ever. It increases the evidence available for investigators and prosecutors to review and provides us with internal training opportunities when reviewing incidents.” shared Luke Hellinga, Acting Chief, PVE Police Department.

In addition, funds have been provided to purchase an emergency search drone service to aid in the event of a disaster and emergency patrols.

This summer, the PVE Foundation, along with the City of PVE, numerous organizations, and volunteers, are proposing a major fund-raising event to celebrate PVE’s 100th Anniversary of the original PVE Development Project. Funds raised will be allocated to the “PVE Safety Initiative” which

includes a Mobile Command Vehicle, ZoneHaven, that establishes new standards to help first responders and community members prepare for and navigate through emergency real-time evacuation planning and communication. Also, mobile electronic messaging boards to alert residents to timely information and upgrades to disaster containers throughout the city to ensure they have current equipment and supplies.

“Palos Verdes Estates is susceptible to disasters because of our location. If power is down, communication will be compromised, and we will need to have an Emergency Operations Center so that our PVE Police Department can continue to operate and dispatch officers to help residents — and save lives,” said Merlin David, Community Relations Officer, PVE Police Dept.

The Mobile Command Unit will be able to set up a base in strategic proximity to emergency sites and will be outfitted with the latest equipment to enable communications with local city, county, state, and federal agencies to acquire information and assistance for PVE residents, schools, and businesses. The current equipment is outdated and no longer capable of supporting critical needs during an emergency. Given the geography of PVE, borrowing another city’s command unit is typically not an option, especially if the need is extending outside the community. The Foundation believes that having such resources available to our police department is in the best interest of our residents.

The Mobile Command Unit and electronic messaging boards provide additional benefits such as the school district, major gatherings, notification of road closures, and special events.

“In the event of a major emergency that impacts part or all of our city, our PVE Police Department requires critically needed equipment to quickly and effectively respond to the event,” PVE Resident Steve Friedrich commented.

“It seems every week we learn of a new community emergency somewhere in the world,” commented Renee Jaco, Executive Director of the PVE Foundation. “Working with our city officials and police department, we want to ensure PVE is prepared in the event of an earthquake, wildfire, or another emergency.”

Planning for the summer fund-raising event is underway and plans will be posted on the Foundation website as they become available.

Driving Force Against COVID-19 Written by Diane Krieger | Photographed by Siri Berting In one of life’s ironies, David Rand, MD, chose infectious disease as his specialty in part because a department chief told him the hours were regular and patients seldom died. Both turned out to be myths—especially in a pandemic.

At the peak of the spring 2020 hospital crisis, Dr. Rand was working 16-hour shifts, seven days a week.

The worst stretch saw him and fellow Torrance Memorial infectious disease specialist Eric Milefchik, MD, caring for 250 coronavirus patients. That’s almost half the hospital’s capacity.

In October 2020, COVID-19 took a personal turn as Dr. Rand helplessly watched his father-in-law die of the disease in Torrance Memorial’s ICU. When asked to talk about his life outside the hospital, he initially draws a blank. “The man under this white coat is kind of boring,” he says, apologetically. “Basically, the last 30 years of my life have been all about medicine.”

He has no regrets about choosing infectious disease as his specialty.

“It’s very detective-worky,” he says.

But it leaves little bandwidth for other interests.

Before the pandemic, he found respite in golf. He’d play a round with some buddies a couple times a month.

Once or twice a year they’d travel to a famous course on the PGA or U.S. Open circuit.

Those trips resumed last spring. In the lull before the Delta-variant storm, the golf buddies headed to Oregon’s Bandon Dunes. Last September, just weeks ahead of the Ryder Cup, they walked the hallowed greens of Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

As with his choice of medical specialty, there’s bittersweet irony in Dr. Rand’s affinity for golf. His father was an avid, lifelong golfer, and young David picked up his first club at age 6. But he drifted away from the sport in his teens, and it was only after his dad died in 2004 that a longing for connection brought Dr. Rand back to the links.

“It crushes me that we never played together as adults,” he says. “A lot of the enjoyment I get out of golf is hoping Dad is somehow watching me play.”

He recounts an “out-of-body experience” at the seventh hole of Pebble Beach: “I was on the tee, looking out at the ocean. And I just teared up, wishing so badly my dad was there.”

Moments later, Dr. Rand birdied the par-3 hole. “I know Dad was watching me,” he says. “He was definitely involved. He had to be.”

Dr. Rand’s other passion is the fight against cancer. He and his wife, Michelle, are both active in American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She is the team leader for the 100-person Torrance Memorial Care Bears, and he’s their chief fundraiser. Together the team raised nearly $50,000 in the run-up to last October’s gala event.

The Rands initially got involved with the charity in 2004, after both Michelle’s mother and David’s father died of cancer. Their commitment redoubled last May when Michelle was diagnosed with lung cancer.

“Thank goodness, she had a surgical cure,” Dr. Rand says. That’s a piece of happy irony.

Home-Grown PV Resident Keeps the Peninsula Beautiful Wr i t t e n b y C i n d y D o n n e l l y

Over the past four decades Bennett Landscape has received many awards for both landscaping achievement and for community service

As you drive around the Peninsula, you will probably see familiar red trucks of Bennett Landscape and the results of their work, both private and public gardens, as it beautifies Palos Verdes, and beyond. Sean Bennett, owner of Bennett Landscape and a lifelong Peninsula resident, started in the landscape before he was old enough to drive. He would mow neighbors’ lawns, use their equipment, and travel to jobs via his bicycle. He recalls often hearing his four brothers playing basketball nearby while he worked. Back then, he earned 50 cents an hour and recalls going to the bank and watching the deposits add up in his account passbook $5 at a time. Eventually, some of his clients recommended he get his own equipment. His parents encouraged him and at age 15 and a half, provided his first business loan of $800 to purchase his first red truck. At that time, his business was called Bennett Enterprises and Sean had the name painted on his truck.

In those years, he took summer classes at SCROC in Torrance in Ornamental Horticulture to learn the names of plants and about soil. His business grew via word of mouth and referrals.

After high school, his parents encouraged him to study Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona, but he loved working outside, not sitting behind a desk. As his business grew, he realized, though, that he had to give up some outdoor work in order to manage his business.

He received his contractor’s license in 1983 and his first contract was for the city of Rolling Hills Estates for tree trimming. Again, his parents helped him by providing the required bond and a friend leased him the chipper he needed for maintaining the trees. Around this time, he changed the name from Bennett Enterprises to Bennett Landscape and commissioned a logo that he continues to use. The logo features a hummingbird, and Sean explains that hummingbirds are industrious, quick,

and beautiful, which inspired him. Today, after almost 40 years, Bennett Landscape still provides landscaping services to the Peninsula and to areas within a 40-to-50-mile radius. In recent years, he has worked on beautification projects for the city of Palos Verdes Estates, including moving boulders and huge stones as part of a dry riverbed near city hall. Currently, they are working on landscaping the new Ladera Linda Community Center in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Over the years, Bennett Landscape has won numerous awards, including two First Place awards in the California Landscape Contractors Association’s annual beautification awards for projects in Rolling Hills Estates. In addition, they also received awards from The PV Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, and Inc. 5000. Bennett Landscape even participated in an episode of Extreme

Makeover; Sean recalls that they had to work under lights in the middle of the night under a tight time constraint. His business has grown from a single red truck to a fleet of over 40, and he now employs 70 people.

Bennett Landscape takes pride in giving back to the community; this year, they l help celebrate Arbor Day on April 28th by donating a tree of choice to five local cities. This includes planting, soil amendments, fertilizer, staking, ties, and 60day post-planting watering. Sean points out that trees enrich our community by creating soft and gentle surroundings that insulate us from heat while adding ambiance. He reminds us that the Peninsula started out as barren land and that trees have transformed the landscape into what we see today. He is also particularly proud of his support for education through donating to local fundraisers, including the Peninsula Education Foundation, Chadwick, and other local schools. In addition, he also donates plants to decorate for school graduation ceremonies. Without a doubt, the Peninsula has benefited from Sean’s dedication to his craft and his four decades of bringing beautiful landscapes to the Hill.

Palos Verdes High’s Broadcast Program, Live From 205, recently won the Excellence Award for its outstanding journalism and commitment, which provides students with a platform to express their voices and ideas. The channel, run by students, has quickly become an integral part of the school community and a source of pride for everyone involved.

As a student at PVHS, I have watched others excel at school and in our community by getting involved with members. Traveling around the bay area, the 205 team finds educational stories highlighting the unique Palos Verdes community. We congratulate them for their outstanding work.

With the fleeting amount of content in the South Bay, Live From 205 scours Palos Verdes for viable stories and ideas on which to report. The process of creating a segment is tedious and students handle it under a hard schedule deadline.

With a sit-down meeting called “Now Ideas,” the team pitches ideas to each other to come up with content for their shows. After a reporter and editor finish filming their story, the editor sends a rough draft to the producers who critique the stories and decide if they made it in that week’s show. Skilled reporters, anchors, writers, editors, and producers have made the channel one of its prestige on a national level.

Senior Producer Matthew Warter shares his excitement about winning The Excellence Award.

Warter said, “It’s very validating to see on a national scale that our show holds up against the best in the country. Live From 205 has impacted hundreds of students at PVHS and in the Palos Verdes community.” He added “Being a part of it has helped me realize that film is my path to pursue. For the remainder of the 2023 school year, he says his goal is to hone the skills of younger reporters, setting them up for the same success.”

Winning The Excellence Award was not only a milestone for cast members but also an incredibly meaningful accomplishment for the newest

addition to the team, Mr. Beaucar, Live From 205 coordinator. Beaucar commented that he was at the school last year but only for a month and that it meant even more that a team of his choosing and organizing won the award this year. It is no surprise that Beaucar had the skills to lead the team, listing in an interview that he has experience with acclaimed film producer Robert Evans, best known for movies like The Godfather and Love Story. He notes that “always innovating and always improving,” is how pro- grams continue to be successful. Their innovation has been shown through their captivating stories broadcasted live in every classroom.

Since the channel’s first set of awards in 2005, Live from 205 has continued broadcasting to students at PVHS and continues to influence the entire community population. From trying different Starbucks drinks to interviewing the most interesting students at school, ( I would say from interviewing local surf legend Alex Gray, to sharing the story of student Will Cory on his path to beating cancer) (instead of the Starbucks part) their influence, by using a wide range of stories, has grown. When asked what their next goal is, Warter said “The Excellence Award is the sole accolade for which the channel reaches each year, so winning it has made all staff experiences worth it.”

Lacrosse Gear Drive to benefit Lacrosse the Nations

Sea King Lacrosse is collecting gently used boys and girls lacrosse sticks, gloves, pads and pinny’s. Local high school players will bring all donated gear to Tenjo, Columbia, a small underserved farming community in the mountains outside of Bogota. They will spend a week teaching lacrosse to children and complete a service project at the local community center.

On March 4th, 2023, the Peninsula Chapter of National Charity League celebrated the completion of the Class of 2023’s six year program. During these six years, the class volunteered over 16,500 hours at various South Bay philanthropies including the Ticktocker Thrift Shop in San Pedro. The Senior Recognition event took place at the Beverly Wilshire, which has hosted the event for decades. National Charity League’s mission is to foster mother-daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.

Luminaries and Novas of Torrance Memorial Medical Center, a non-profit volunteer group, founded in 1990, provides services and financial donations to the hospital. To date, they have donated. over $540,000 to support many important hospital projects.

Congratulations to the 19 graduating high school seniors from the Novas of Torrance Memorial Medical Center. Collectively, they contributed over 7,800 service hours to support patients and staff, particularly through the pandemic. Since September 2020, they graciously donated to healthcare workers and patients, treating them to thousands of baked goods items and care packages.

Rolling Robots Robotics Team Won the 2023 CREATE U.S. OPEN Championship and are sending nine teams to VEX Robotics Worlds Championship Only a week after winning the VRC State Robotics Championship and receiving the Amaze Award, Rolling Robots’ middle school Team 7700K emerged as the Tournament Champion at 2023 Create U.S. Open Championship on March 22. Against 97 invited teams from across the United States, this was achieved without losing a single match.

In addition, eight more Rolling Robots’ world-class teams qualified for the 2023 VEX Robotics World Championship based on their match or skill performance at the California State Championship. This is Rolling Robots’ 10th season competing in VEX Robotics competitions, winning prestigious awards year after year in State, National, and World championships.

Rolling Robots’ four learning centers in greater Los Angeles and Irvine, also Palos Verdes, provide robotics and invention education through member programs. Programs FLL & VEX robotics competition teams are available for kids ages 5 to 18 through homeschool, afterschool, and summer camps.

There are a lot of perks to living on the Peninsula. The vistas and the trails are stellar and the incredible, large, and wide variety of wines available for tasting at the neighborhood grocery store, is pretty sweet too.

Pavilions Supermarket in Rolling Hills Estates has a free wine club and complimentary, in-store tastings. There is a bar directly adjacent to the wine cellar where tastings are held. Customers don’t have to be wine club members to participate in tastings like the one held recently to celebrate Hampton Water Wine.

Hampton Water, which is said to capture the spirit shared between the Hamptons and the south of France, is a collaboration between Rock legend Jon Bon Jovi, his son Jesse Bongiovi, Ali Franklin, and famed Vinter Gérard Bertrand.

Hampton Water is made in France. It was rated 90 points by the Wine Spectator on its first vintage, made the top 100 list, and has received 90 Points on every vintage since its launch. When entrepreneur Jesse Bongiovi and winemaker Gerard Bertrand brought their critically acclaimed Hampton Water Wines to Palos Verdes and customers in attendance at their wine tasting could not get enough.

“Last year’s wine was good but this one’s going to be even better.

We’re off to a good start,” said Bongiovi, Palos Verdes is happy to be along for the ride.

2023 Joe Alessi PV/Pen Mom Shootout

This will be the second year that Joe Alessi has hosted this fun competition. Five moms from each school competed to win the coveted trophy as well as $500.00 cash. Palos Verdes High School moms were one goal short of keeping the trophy for another year. Peninsula Panthers took home the trophy and the cash that they will put back into the program. Joe Alessi says, “The Alessi Mom Shootout was created by me as a way to have some marketing that is unique, meaningful and creates memories for those involved. Having been a Senior parent three times over seeing my boys all play football and graduate from PV High I was involved in Senior Parent Day where the team acknowledges the parents and players on the field before game time so I stole that Senior parent theme and created another way for Senior Moms to be a part of their sons senior year in the sport and have some fun while trying to win some prize money for their team.” Joe Alessi is a local real estate agent on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Cecil Wyman’s 100-birthday Drive By Celebration Contributed by Merlin D av i d , C o m m u n i t y Re l a t i o n s O f f i ce r o f t h e Pa l o s Ve rd e s E s t a t e s Po l i ce D e p a r t m e n t On Thursday, March 23, 100-year-old Cecil Wyman, his family, friends, and PVE neighborhood celebrated his life with a drive-by big birthday celebration. The turnout of about 60 people was phenomenal but not surprising. Cecil has been a part of the community since 1969 and was a United Airlines pilot, a WWII veteran, who loved motorcycles, touring Alaska and Panama on his motorcycle.

Cecil’s daughter and son attended Valmonte Elementary School, Malaga Cove Intermediate, PV High School, His daughter, Leslie, from North Carolina, attended..

Many people from various organizations, too vast to mention, showed their love and respect to a man and his family who for 54 years have been solid citizens of PVE, making it a better city in which to live. Thank you, Cecil and family!

AROUND TOWN Racing to End Alzheimer’s helps to kick off Long Beach Grand Prix Phil Frengs along with the organization he founded, Racing to End Alzheimer’s, hosted an event on April 12 at the Palos Verdes Golf Club to kick off the Long Beach Grand Prix. The organizations #43 Porsche 911 GT Cup car was on display with racing livery and nearly 90 names honoring loved ones that have suffered or are suffering with Alzheimer’s. Speaking Up! Peninsula High School’s Speech and Debate Team Celebrates Historic Season Written by Mela n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

The Peninsula High School Speech and Debate team is on fire and reveling in its historic success.

Arguably one of the most accomplished extracurricular activities on the hill, in the past six years the team has won four state championships and two national championships, and this year they are on track to accomplish even more, something that is practically unheard of in an open enrollment public school.

According to Scott Wheeler Peninsula’s Debate Coach, the squad has a whopping 12 teams qualified for the Tournament of Champions (TOC) which is more than any other school in the nation and more than twice that of any previous Peninsula High debate team and that’s not all.

Peninsula debaters also boast three teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation, including the second-place team in the country.

TOC is one of the most prestigious and competitive American high school speech and debate tournaments. Debaters must place high enough in specific nationally respected tournaments to earn bids to TOC; at least two bids are needed to compete. Wheeler says the activity itself is highly competitive and challenging and requires regular practice, coaching, hard work, and dedication from already maxed-out high school students.

“It takes up a ton of time but I love it. I like to be busy. I have school and APs and am also involved in other activities like drama but my friends are in debate and I do Lincoln Douglas and it’s just really fun,” says Abigail Imley, a Peninsula High Sophomore debater.

The team also hosts a large national competition on campus which is an enormous undertaking. The Peninsula Invitational, now in its sixth year, returned to campus in January and was attended by over one-thousand competitors from

eighty schools from ten states and Taiwan. Over the past few months, the team traveled to three major tournaments and won all three.

“Countless studies have shown that scholastic debate improves students’ critical thinking skills, academic skills, mental and emotional maturity, and academic achievement. Debaters’ reading comprehension scores are as high as 25% higher than their peers, which is unsurprising given that debaters are exposed to a wide array of new information such as college-level philosophy, history, public policy, and current events,” explains Wheeler.

He goes on, “The competitive nature of the activity motivates students to familiarize themselves with academic subjects they would not otherwise find interesting. Students not only learn the subject matter but how to research and synthesize ideas.”

Proof that Wheeler is spot on is in the stellar performance of his team, both in debate and outside of the activity when he’s not around. When the high school debate students recently spoke to middle school students about their activity they implored their younger peers to stay in pursuit of the dispute and praised the adults that support their efforts.

Students acknowledge a successful speech and debate team not only consists of devoted and hardworking kids but also dedicated coaches willing and able to provide constructive and effective guidance and support and a supportive community of committed and dedicated parents and teachers.

Traditional “Afternoon Tea” for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. Not only because I am blessed to be a mother and my family spoils me, but also because I love spoiling all of my wonderful mother-figures too!

Moms, grandmas, sisters, aunties, friends… thank you for having a positive influence on me and everyone living in our sweet Palos Verdes Community!

Let’s show some love to these wonderful mother-figures in our lives on Mother’s Day and really the whole year through! Gather your family and friends to spoil your special loves with this beautiful traditional “Afternoon Tea” filled with tea sandwiches, sweets, spreads, and of course tea and hot chocolate! It is sure to be a hit!

Cucumber

White bread, plain cream cheese, peeled and sliced cucumber, salt Turkey Cranberry

Wheat bread, plain cream cheese chopped and mashed with dried cranberries, turkey slices, arugula Egg Salad White bread, egg salad

Ingredients: hard boiled eggs, ¼ cup Miracle Whip or Mayonnaise, ½-1 tbl mustard, salt & pepper to taste.

Directions: Peel and dice eggs. Add to bowl with other ingredients and toss. Adjust seasonings to taste. Yields about 2 cups.

Chicken Salad French baguette sliced, topped with chicken salad

Ingredients: 2 cooked chicken breasts diced, 1 cup sliced red grapes, ½ cup diced apples, ½ cup diced celery, ¼ cup pecan pieces, 2 TBL sliced scallions, 2-4 TBL Miracle Whip, salt & pepper to taste.

Directions: Add ingredients to bowl and toss. Adjust seasonings to taste. Yields about 3-4 cups chicken salad.

SPREADS Clotted Cream (Recipe below) Berry Jam Lemon Curd Clotted Cream Recipe:

Make one to two days in advance Ingredients: 2 cups organic, non-pasteurized heavy whipping cream.

Directions: Pre-heat oven to 375°F. Pour cream into 3 cup glass baking dish, cover with tin foil and place in warm oven. Close oven door and immediately turn oven off. Let cream sit in warm oven for 3 hours. Turn oven on again to 175°F and let cook for 7 hours.

Remove from oven and let cream cool to room temperature on counter. Chill in refrigerator for 12 hours. Scoop thick, “clotted” clumps into a bowl. If too thick, add back some of the liquid until it reaches your desired consistency.

DRINKS Hot Tea

Our family loves herbal teas from T2Tea.com and Mighty Leaf.

There are so many beautiful blends from so many makers, that you really can’t go wrong. Choose your favorites, boil some water and enjoy!

Hot Chocolate

Whisk together 2 cups hot water, ¼ cup cacao powder, ½ cup granulated sugar, ¼ tsp Kosher salt, and ¼ tsp cinnamon, while simmering over medium/low heat. Add 2 cups whole milk and ¼ tsp good vanilla extract. Serve hot with whipped cream!

SWEETS Along with tea sandwiches, a traditional “Afternoon Tea” serves small portions of beautifully decadent desserts and scones.

Here are two of my favorites: Vanilla Scones Ingredients:

½ cup heavy cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 large egg 2 cups all-purpose flour, fluff then measure (10oz.)

1/3 cup sugar 1 tbl baking powder ½ tsp Kosher salt 6 rbl cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes Directions:

1. Pour cream into liquid measuring cup. Stir in vanilla and egg.

2 In separate larger bowl add flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

Stir to combine.

3. Cut butter into flour mixture using stand-mixer, hand mixer, pastry cutter, or two knives until butter is the size of small peas.

4. Pour wet ingredients into dry mixture and mix to combine. Fold dough over itself and compress it repeatedly until excess flour is incorporated.

5. Dump onto a floured surface and roll dough out until it is ½” – 1” tall.

6. Cut into even circles (1-1.5” in diameter) and freeze until you are ready to bake.

TO BAKE: Preheat oven to 375°F (or 350°F convection) and bake FROZEN scone dough for 15-20 minutes. Scones will look golden/ brown on edges and tops when it is time to take them out. Once you remove them from the oven, let them sit on the hot cookie sheet for 10 minutes to finish cooking.

Tartlets

Fill these tartlet shells with whipped cream, pastry cream, lemon curd, chocolate ganache, or anything your heart desires! Top with fresh fruit and voila…you are ready for your Afternoon Tea! Ingredients:

8 tbl (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature 1/4 cup sugar 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 1¾ cups all-purpose flour, (fluff and then measure, 9oz.)

1/8 tsp salt Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350° F. 2. Mix butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment until just combined. Add vanilla and mix.

Add flour and salt and mix on low speed until dough starts to come together.

3. Place 1 tablespoon dough into each cup of a mini-cupcake pan. Press dough flat inside pan. Bake for 8 minutes.

4. Remove from oven and using a wooden dowel (or the back of a large wooden spoon or rolling pin handle), press into center of dough while slightly turning the dowel to shape the dough into tartlets.

5. Bake for an additional 8-12 minutes. Remove from oven and re-shape using the same method outlined above.

6. Allow to cool in pan for only 5 minutes before twisting and removing tartlets from the pan. Let them cool completely on a wire rack. Store in sealed container until ready to fill. Once filled, store covered in refrigerator.

California’s Proposition 19 went into effect in 2021, dramatically changing the framework for property taxation. The Proposition was supported by the California Association of Realtors because the new laws will lead to more real estate transactions following the death of a parent or parents.

Effective Feb. 16, 2021, the changes affected two major areas involving parent/child transfers, primary residences, and other real property.

Regarding primary residences, a child or children who move into their parent(s) primary residence may be eligible for a property tax break with limitations. Prior to Proposition 19, no value limit was set on the transfer of the primary residence. Today, there is a cap that in the best-case scenario will allow the transferee to save approximately $1,000 per month.

For those who inherit another property such as an investment property, they will no longer retain their parent(s) low property tax base.

Proposition 19 did not just change parent/child transfer rules.

Homeowners over 55 are affected in a good way. They are winners under Proposition 19…in addition to Realtors. The “downsizing” exemption was changed to incentivize persons 55 and older to move without concern that their property tax base will be dramatically affected. The new 55-plus exemptions became effective April 1, 2021.

In the past, homeowners 55 and older were permitted to carry their property tax base with them with limitations.

One limitation required them to “downsize” to a home of “equal or lesser value” within two years. In the best-case scenario “equal or lesser value” could be no more than 110 percent of the sale price of their prior residence. Now, sellers can purchase a replacement home that is more expensive, i.e., they can “upsize.”

Only the amount above the “equal or lesser value” is added to the transferred value.

A second limitation required sellers to purchase the replacement home in the same county or move to a county with reciprocity. Unlike today, not every county offered reciprocity, and the ones that did often limited the amount that was protected from reassessment. Under Proposition 19, homeowners over 55 can now purchase anywhere in California and carry their base with them.

Another limitation under the old law allowed 55-plus homeowners to take advantage of the “downsizing” exemption only once. Under the new law, they can carry their base with them three times.

Homeowners over 55 years old are now highly incentivized to move and increase their equity. One strategy that can be employed is combining this property tax gift with Internal Revenue Code Section 121. Section 121 excludes from income the first $250,000 from the “…sale or exchange of property if, during the five-year period ending on the date of the sale or exchange, such property has been owned and used by the taxpayer as the taxpayer’s principal residence for periods aggregating two years or more.”

Now, during the twilight years, homeowners with time and experience can purchase, remodel, build equity, and sell without worrying about losing their low property tax. In addition, they can earn a tax-free income of up to $250,000 for a single person and $500,000 for a couple filing a joint return. To get the exclusion, a taxpayer must own and use the home as their main residence for a period adding up to two years out of the five years before it is sold.

What do you like best about your pet?

She’s mild mannered, loveable and eager to please. She is eager to learn new tricks and skillsand loves being part of the family.

Any funny stories?

She loves water and swimming. At a friend’s house, she couldn’t resist the temptation of jumping into their oversized water fountain— probably thinking it was a really small swimming pool. Her canine friend just watched in disbelief (as did her parents and our friends!).

Eight-year-old Golden retriever, Riley

Dawn Golding introduces us to her family’s beloved pet, Riley.

Where did you get your pet?

A breeder in Riverside, recommended by our friend Debby. Debby was the original owner of our first dog/Golden Retriever, Bugsy. We adopted Bugsy from Debby when our kids were in middle school. Debby we learned was searching for a “forever home” for Bugsy then 1½ yrs old(she was going through medical treatment and felt Bugsy needed an active home with kids that could keep her “baby” stimulated!) Bugsy lived for a full/happy 10½ years, and we sadly had to put her down due to a growing malignant cancer. We realized how empty our house felt without Bugsy (and soon to be more empty- as we were about to become true “empty nesters” with our second child heading off to college the next fall). There was little debate- we needed a second Golden to fill our hearts and home! Riley was the answer!

Is there a story behind your pet’s name?

We had a long list that included; Cali, Fenway, Frisco, Fiji. After a few family votes, we agreed on Riley.

Is anything special or unusual about your pet?

Where to start! She is a love junkie, always happy to lick and curl up or lean next to anyone that gives her attention. Riley loves playing fetch more than anything—and doesn’t discriminate on what’s being tossed or where—frisbee, stick, or ball, at a park or at the beach or pool. She’s been trained to bring in the morning newspaper from the driveway—and to grab her leash before heading out for a walk. Training Riley to open the beverage refrigerator and snag a beer is still a work in progress!

She’s always interested in food and saying hello to anyone who looks like they might want to pet her—Riley has been known to also keep her eye on Sunday morning walkers who are having a breakfast burrito along the Esplanade above Torrance Beach. At least once, she has been close enough to a breakfast burrito (and an unsuspecting kid) to grab a lick of an egg/bacon/cheese treat!

How spoiled is your pet?

In a word, VERY. Sleeps on our bed, gets walked twice a day, treats throughout the day, regular play dates, grooming…and soon, hopefully a cross country trip to a family cottage on Cape Cod- so she can swim in a lake, chase ducks.

What else should we know about your pet?

Our empty nest is far from being empty thanks to Riley. We couldn’t imagine life without her.
