Hello Palos Verdes This month, we warmly welcome sunshine and breathtaking views that the rain rewarded us – 180 degrees of gloriously stunning vistas. From snowcapped mountains to splendid green ocean cliffs, we are again reminded of why we chose to live here.

April 22, Earth Day, is perfect for us to celebrate Heather Askinosie and Timmi Jandro, two lifelong friends, who pay homage daily to the Earth through their magnetically charged crystal business, helping/educating people on how to use crystals to align and grow. Personally, I adore these two beautiful and strong women, so I was thrilled to share their stories of friendship, business, and family.

I also had the pleasure of visiting with Gemma Kemps, hearing her passionately speak about the animals she dearly loves and experiences up close and personal with her husband Michael.

Lots of fun events to check out this month, from Booster Club parties to the Power of Pink. Lots of dedicated/talented community members raising money and putting together fantastic events.

Heather Askinosie and Timmi Jandro know it’s not always easy to go outside and connect with nature but by wearing energy jewelry the high vibrational power of the crystals allows nature to come to you.

“Our mission is always to educate people about the energy of the Earth. We believe crystals are a universal tool. They’re grounding; they don’t care about any of those labels of humanity; they’re just energy, something to hold and inspire,” explains Heather who founded Energy Muse 23 years ago with her partner and best friend Timmi. These Palos Verdes business partners were destined for their magical journey.

“Timmi and I were neighbors, this was the 70s, and I lived next door to her Grandma Jo who was talking about reincarnation over the fence while my mother would be reading tea leaves inside,” laughs Heather. Heather has dedicated her life to taking the guesswork out of crystals and helping people. Timmi refers to her as a human crystal. ”She gave me a necklace. I didn’t know anything about crystals at that time, but people noticed. It was exciting. I was in a transitional time in my life, and because of my background in the garment industry I knew how to get things made so we

joined forces, and Energy Muse was born,” Timmi says. “Heather and I were both pregnant at the time. We birthed boys that were a month apart and now they’re best friends and starting their own business together, so I think there’s a destiny to all of this,” she says.

In 2000, they started selling crystal jewelry designed for intentions like prosperity or abundance and people started feeling the energy from the crystals and clamored for more. They got their products into the hands of celebrities and the so-called ‘flip-flop girls with the energy beads’ became a Hollywood hit. Today, they run an international business selling directly to consumers on their website energymuse.com. They are thrilled to host Facebook and Instagram live sales and say TikTok is coming soon.

beautiful to feel the energy of the crystals, all you must do is put on a piece of jewelry. Timmi explains you must hold it and feel it and get to know it. A lot of people wear them daily as jewelry or keep them on a desk or in a pocket. Like essential oils, crystals, too, are of Earth and have similar energies.

“People say ‘I’ve had mine for two days. It’s not working.’ So, I say when you started your diet, did you lose 10 pounds in two days? No. It takes time. It takes consistency.” They say working with crystals is easy; it does not have to be fancy, just consistent.

Choose one that appeals to you and carry it for 30 days. When that time is up, look up your crystal and see if you feel its energies.

Growing their business and their families on the hill has been a dream. As mothers, they are eternally grateful for their PV community. When their children were young, they taught the Growing Great curriculum to third through fifth graders in the PVPUSD about eating healthy. Timmi’s two sons are now in their 20s. Heather has a teenage daughter and a 20-something son, and crystals are still a constant in their lives.

“It has been a huge heart opener to realize how supported we are,” says Heather “We are here because of our community. We wouldn’t be here without the people who opened their doors for private trunk shows and new moon circles and bead bar parties and all the amazing things that we’ve done. Palos Verdes is a deep community that has the richness of generations. It’s about our children’s children. Kids come back. They know this is the best place on Earth; they want to stay here, too.”

The women of Energy Muse inspire their community and everyone they meet. Africa is a wild, mystic place; a photographer’s paradise; a utopia for escapists, and a continent that defies interpretation. Palos Verdes resident Gemma Kemps ’dream of aiding the African Elephants began years ago in Kenya. “On a private safari, a baby elephant and its mother approached our truck. The mother and I were eye-to-eye within inches of each other. She picked up her trunk and softly smelled my face, The experience was extraordinary and was one I will never forget. From that moment, I vowed that I would work to help protect 20 | PVMagazine | April | 2023

and conserve the elephant population.” With her conservation work and extensive travels, Kemps has kept her promise.

Life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula has been good to the Kemps family. “By being able to enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean and our surrounding environment, living in Palos Verdes Estates gives me a sense of calm.” And that’s only part of what it’s all about says Gemma, who also serves as president of the Malaga Cove Homeowners’ Association.

The vast differences and history between St. Petersburg and Moscow are fascinating. St. Petersburg is a rich, colorful, almost European experience, while Moscow is a population center where the country’s political and cultural history is evident,” she says.

Kemps believes that preserving beautiful and endangered species is critical to joint survival as the population increases. “I enjoy understanding and participating in the conservation efforts associated with protecting wildlife. I intend to continue to travel extensively, supporting non-profit organizations that invest directly in conservation.”

always thrilled to come home to her beloved community of more than 20 years.

“The Malaga Cove Homeowners Association is my current focus; balancing the needs of the Association’s members and engaging with neighbors strengthen my ties to the community,” she says.

After raising her three children in Palos Verdes and living here with her husband Michael, who serves on the Palos Verdes Estates City Council, Kemps is excited about the future.

“I have known my husband for nearly 40 years.

We met when we were 12 years old. His aunt and uncle lived across the street from my parents. We were reacquainted in our early 20s and have been inseparable since,” she says.

Recently, after two weeks in India where the couple traveled with a group dedicated to the work of the non-profit Wildlife SOS, they visited New Delhi, Agra, and the Ranthambore National Park with the organization which is focused on making lasting changes to protect and conserve India’s natural heritage, forests, and biodiversity.

“In addition to visiting regular tourist sites, we visited an elephant hospital, a sloth bear sanctuary, and a national forest known for protecting the Indian tiger. We learned much about Wildlife SOS’s practical and legal progress in stopping the practice of dancing bears and the abuse of elephants for tourism and ceremonial events,” Kemps says.

For someone who has traveled extensively, Kemps thrills at experiencing new cultures, especially through wildlife conservation. “Rwanda was an amazing country. It has rebounded from a horrific genocide and its people have a tremendous spirit.

It’s beautiful, with sprawling farms and countryside.

When her youngest child Whitney was in high school, a friend who worked at Little Company of Mary said, ‘Put some of your volunteer activities to work.’ “I had finished a doctorate in special education at UCLA and just as I was about to pursue that, we had our first child and then our two others and I never quite got back to my formal training, but I had done a lot of fundraising by then and felt like Little Company of Mary would be a great match.

It’s been perfect as I connected to the mission of giving right away.”

“I have loved working with the donors, many of whom became dear friends, and helping them find the perfect project for their philanthropic interests, enabling them to say thank you and give back to the medical center,” she adds.

Marlene started at Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation in 2001 in special events. She transitioned to major gift fundraising in 2006 and can’t pull herself away from the work she loves so much. “I said I was retiring January 31st,” she laughs, “Of course, I underestimated what it would take to tie it in a bow, so I’m still working—but I’m getting there.”

When her children were young, she was involved in National Charity League, sports teams, PTAs, Booster Clubs and Peninsula Education Foundation. “Palos Verdes is a great community to raise a family and we still love every aspect of living here.” Blessed to live in the same Valmonte home since 1980 Marlene and her husband Steve love their Peninsula life.

The essence of this civic-minded couple, married 52 years, was forever changed in November 2006, when Whitney was struck and killed by a drunk driver while in college. Despite the most unimaginable pain of losing a child Marlene and Steve dwell in gratitude and generosity. From this heartbreaking tragedy, the Whitney Young Children’s Foundation was born.

“We did things to honor her. We donated her organs to bring good out of the tragedy. We have

had contact with the recipients and those were very powerful interactions,” Marlene shares. “We started the foundation immediately. Our first announcement was at her memorial service. A lot of money was donated. We never dreamed the foundation would enjoy such longevity,” Marlene says, and is proud to have gifted the funds extensively in the community.

“We pride ourselves that every dollar is donated to help children dream, live, love, and laugh in ways previously unimaginable. Whitney loved children.

She wanted to be a teacher so we touch organizations that deal with underserved children so we can make their lives better,” Marlene says.

As she has worked to connect so many to the mission of Little Company of Mary, she and Steve have loved being with their children and grandchildren. Life is coming full circle these days and they are enjoying every moment.

“We have four granddaughters. Our oldest daughter Logan, who lives on the east coast, has 12- and 13-year-olds, while our son Jonathan and his wife Elisabeth live in PV and have eight and three year olds.

“What’s great is that the eight-year-old goes to Silver Spur Elementary School which is where all our kids went, so I’m going back to Silver Spur for the Fun Run this afternoon. My kids were five years apart, so when I finished at Silver Spur, I had been a parent there for 18 years! It was great. Now I get to go back.”

“We are all responsible for each other to some degree. If you have been blessed with the time and resources to help others, there is no greater joy than exercising those blessings. It’s all about making the world a better place and reaching out to less fortunate individuals to give them the opportunities that came pretty easily to many of us,” Marlene says from her heart.

Occasionally, we meet writers who inspire us.

This month, we are happy to introduce Palos Verde’s Cornerstone Elementary School fifth grader Nikita Kapoor. Pack of the Lost: The Uninviting Forest is her debut fantasy novel for young readers. The sequel is coming soon; Nikita also recently published a poetry book, Gentle Shadows, Fierce Wings.

Pack of the Lost: The Uninviting Forest is a story of survival, strength, and betrayal which she started at age eight during the Covid lockdown.

She crafted almost as soon as she could talk and is a member of the MENSA and her school’s Gifted and Talented program. Her interests vary widely; she loves chess, math, robotics, swimming, and basketball. She adores animals, nature, reading, and writing and wants to make the world a better place in which to live.

“I love wildlife, especially canines and I read extensively about wolves, how they behave, react, and live as a pack. My increasing love for wolves and my knowledge of these fascinating creatures encourages me to write about them,” she explains.

Her novel is about two lost wolves on a perilous journey to rebuild their pack. The tale takes readers through the forbidden woods. And when they discover a magical amulet that connects them with their wolf ancestors, a magical tale unfolds.

Nikita, with her family’s help, published her own books as the Founder and President of Paper Lily Press.

Palos Verdes is home to some of the smartest and most successful small business owners in the country. Most small business owners rent rather than own their place of business, often because commercial tenants want flexibility to expand, contract, and perhaps one day walk away from their business altogether with a hefty profit. If you are a small business owner with a commercial real estate lease, a number of tenant-oriented provisions can substantially increase the purchase price of your business in addition to making the process of selling your business go more smoothly. Most form commercial leases intentionally do not contain these provisions, to include the omnipresent AIR “Standard Industrial/ Commercial” net and gross leases. This article shall discuss one such tenant-oriented provision — what transactional real estate attorneys call “Permitted Transfers”.

Let’s take the fictional example of “Olmstead Inc.”, Rick Olmstead’s highly successful architecture and design firm with an office in the Gardner building at Malaga Cove Plaza. Rick’s broker just negotiated an amazing lease amendment with a 10 year term at below market rent; 3 five-year renewal options; a right of first refusal to lease the adjacent space; and Prop 13 tax protection. Rick realizes that having these incredible deal terms adds value to his business, and he decides he wants to cash out by selling his business to a much larger company. The next day, after his adrenaline rush from the deal subsides, Rick reviews the amendment in greater depth and notices that the 3 renewal options, right of first refusal, and Prop 13 protection all contain language limiting their applicability to the “originally-named tenant”— Olmstead Inc. Rick also sees language in the

assignment and subletting section of the lease that would make it difficult to transfer the lease upon the sale of his business. Reality sets in and Rick realizes that none of the amazing lease terms negotiated by his broker would apply to a hypothetical buyer of his business. This lease has just cost him a fortune!

Rick could have sidestepped the problem by making the renewal options, right of first refusal, and Prop 13 protection all applicable to Permitted Transfers in addition to Olmstead Inc. Landlords routinely agree to recognize Permitted Transfers even though the definition of what constitutes a “Permitted Transfer” is typically heavily negotiated That being said, most definitions would consider transfers to entities that “acquire a tenant’s assets or stock” to be “Permitted Transfers”.

A Sleep Doc Who Serves

Written by Diane Krieger | Photographed by Siri Berting After treating patients with sleep apnea, acute lung disease and COVID19 all week, Khalid Eltawil, MD, enjoys nothing more than a weekend filled with sudden deaths. No, he’s not the Jekyll-Hyde of pulmonary care.

Eltawil is simply passionate about tennis.

“I try to play as much as possible—at least two to three times a week, mostly on the weekends,” says pulmonary and critical care specialist Dr. Eltawil, who is the medical director of the Torrance Memorial Sleep Disorders Center.

All that exercise pays off in the bedroom. “I sleep great,” he says. “My wife is jealous. I go to bed even before my kids do—usually between 9 or 10 p.m. When it’s time for me to sleep, ‘Good night, I’m out of here.’”

Dr. Eltawil starts his workday by 6 a.m., so he sets his alarm for 4:30 a.m.

The hospital is well situated to feed his tennis mania: for a quick lunchtime workout, he can dash over to South End Racquet Club on Skypark Drive, where he’s a longtime member.

Dr. Eltawil also belongs to Peninsula Racquet Club, which is closer to his Rolling Hills Estates home. But he mostly plays doubles on the backyard courts of friends on the hill.

When he can’t play, Dr. Eltawil bingewatches tennis matches on TV. “My kids say, ‘How can you spend hours looking at that yellow ball go back and forth?’ But I really can!” he says, speaking with a faint, hard-to-place accent.

The mystery accent is explained by an unusual childhood. Though he was born in Cairo, his family moved to Nigeria when he was a baby. His dad was an Egyptian accountant consulting for the Nigerian government. His mom was a journalist who later became an English teacher.

Dr. Eltawil and his two brothers grew up speaking English and Arabic. They attended a British school in the city of Kaduna, northern Nigeria’s industrial hub.

When the family returned to Egypt in 1984, the Eltawil boys completed high school and college through a Cairo-based satellite program of the University of London. Dr. Eltawil studied medicine at Cairo University and came to California for his residency and fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at USC. He’s been at Torrance Memorial since 2003.

On weekends, when not playing or watching tennis, Dr. Eltawil makes himself useful around the house. A self-taught fixer who learns from YouTube videos, he’s always got some home improvement project underway.

Two years ago, he sanded, primed and painted the large wooden back deck. “And I did a great job,” he says, preening.

One by one, he’s changed out all the outdoor electrical fixtures. His wife, Temara Elgammal, an avid gardener, relies on him to repair and reconfigure irrigation pipes and sprinklers.

Dr. Eltawil calls his wife “an amazing person.” They met in Michigan, where she was a medical student, and married soon after she graduated. She has dedicated her life to our kids,” Dr. Eltawil says proudly, noting that his wife is a former PTA president and Torrance Memorial Luminaries board member.

While Dr. Eltawil tinkers around the house, there’s usually hip-hop music thumping in the background.

Michigan-reared Temara is a “big fan” and cranks up the volume as she prepares delicious family meals with her homegrown veggies.

“She’s an amazing cook, and so is my son,” says Dr. Eltawil, whose children are his pride and joy. Dina, 19, “is very smart,” he says. A 2022 class valedictorian at Peninsula High, she is a political science major at UC Santa Barbara. Omar, 17, is a senior at Pen and a team leader in robotics.

Another top pick: Desert Moon Grill in Anaheim, specializing in Lebanese fare.

“I spend as much time as I can with my kids because I realize they’ll soon be off on their way,” Dr. Eltawil says, wistfully.

Peninsula Heritage School’s “Flingala 2023” Parents, faculty, and friends of Peninsula Heritage School enthusiastically participated in a Roaring 20’s-themed “Flingala 2023” at The Reef in Long Beach. Parent Co-Chairs Jen Gergorio-Clinton and Audra Hoynacki planned a delightful evening with dinner, faux gambling opportunities, dancing, and a live auction. Attendees were welcomed at the entrance with a 1929 Packard, graciously donated for the evening by Dana Graham, PV real estate agent.

PV High Booster Club Hosts Spring Fundraising Drive, Catch the Wave On March 10, 2023 Palos Verdes High School Booster Club hosted its biggest fundraiser of the year at Palos Verdes Golf Club. All proceeds benefit the “3 A’s”; academics, arts and athletics. Dean Decker, President of the PV High Booster club would like to thank everyone who turned out for the in person event as well as every event sponsor, auction donor and those that raised their paddles to support the launch of Sea King Center. The event raised over $200,000 for the school and students. This also included both the online and in person auctions as well as those that could not attend but supported the effort through a donation.

Disaster Preparedness Event in PVE

Disaster District Preparedness (DDP) is a communitybased disaster preparedness and Response program managed by the PVE Police Department through the Community RelationsOfficer, Merlin David and staffed with volunteers throughout the city. There are six Emergency Containers at six school campuses in PVE. (PV Intermediate School, VELA (Valmonte), Malaga Cove (PVPUSD campus), Montemalaga (Elementary School), Lunada Bay (Elementary School) and PV High School.)

On Sunday, March 12, neighbors gathered for a well atteneded first meeting (of a series of 6 DDP meetings)—at the PVIS Emergency Container. Neighbors gathered at the PVIS DDP Emergency Container that has been maintained by Dwight Abbott and his DDP team members/ volunteers and NART volunteers (Neighborhood Amateur Radio Team). They provided information on what the roles would be for volunteers—to help rescue efforts in a natural disaster—for that area/that district.

PVHS Fundraiser, Remember the Tritons Walk Written by Junior Contr i b u t o r A i d a n S h e n

On Friday, March 3rd, Palos Verdes High School held its 11th annual Remember the Tritons Walk, a fundraiser hosted by Be the Change to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting blood cancer throughout the world. The fundraiser was initially founded to honor former PVHS student Brian Booth, who lost his battle against Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. As a former member of Be the Change and current student at PVHS, I have had the opportunity to see the impact of this community-wide campaign that honors the Sea Kings who are fighting or who have lost their battle to cancer.

This year’s walk was held in honor of basketball coach Brian Edelman, and current student, Will Corry. “Having the members of the Tritons Walk and the community supporting me throughout my battle and recovery from cancer kept me hopeful and strong during my fight. I am so happy to be back in great health today and I am so grateful to everyone who supported me throughout my journey, said Will.”

Elle Milestone, a student at PVHS, showcased her powerful voice during a performance of the Star-Spangled Banner. The walk commenced with the ceremonial color throw, followed by a lap around the school where members of the community waved and cheered on their driveways as the students passed. Everyone filed back through the balloon archway to a grass field where food and games were enjoyed.

In an interview, Co-President of Be the Change, Ainsley Schmitz, said, “It’s very special to be part of something that makes such a difference. I lost both my grandparents to cancer, making this a cause that’s very dear to my heart.”

While Co-President Steele Weiss was unable to attend, Ainsley voiced on his behalf that “He is extremely excited for monies being raised and grateful to be part of a cause so meaningful to them.”

According to BTC teacher Mrs. Kostrencich, over the past 11 years, Remember the Tritons has successfully raised over $200,000. This year’s walk had approximately 300 participants with numerous sponsors and achieved a goal of $25,000,” she said.

Navigoe, LLC, owned by the PVHS Leonard family, has been an event sponsor for the last two years. Mandi Leonard said that their family has been affected by the disease and “the only way to solve the problem is to get involved, support, and give back in some way to help make an impact.”

Through the tremendous efforts of Be the Change, the walk will continue to raise monies in the future for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The vibrant colors of Holi came alive on March 11th when over 350 people, all ages, races, and religions, gathered for the annual Holi Hungama event, held at Peninsula High School. The Hindu festival Holi, celebrated across India, was brought to Palos Verdes by the Peninsula Hill Foundation, which aims to promote cultural diversity and bring the community together.

Holi celebrates the victory of good over evil, and the arrival of spring. Guests enjoyed traditional Indian snacks, danced to DJ Vishal‘s Bollywood beats, and enjoyed cultural performances by PV families. Dhol, a traditional Indian percussion instrument, created a captivating sound.

From children to the elderly, everyone took turns smearing Holi colors red, blue, green, yellow, and pink on each other as they wished Happy Holi.

PVPUSD Students Advocate in Sacramento at Capitol Convoy Contributed by Petra Ri g g s

PVPUSD students are making their voices heard in Sacramento and legislators are listening thanks to their experience at this year’s Capitol Convoy. This exceptional and unique civic engagement opportunity sponsored by the Palos Verdes Peninsula PTA Council, allows district stakeholders to meet with California lawmakers to discuss issues and legislation affecting school districts.

Students from both Peninsula and Palos Verdes High School, teachers, parents, and school administrators went to Sacramento for two days in March to attend a series of seminars hosted by legislators and policymakers and to advocate together. Their three main lobbying points this year were to promote the improvement of the school district, to advocate for student mental health, and funding for mental health training for teachers and staff.

Petra Riggs, a junior at PV High, was honored to attend. “It was such an amazing experience to be part of our legislative process, to publicize our experience and spread awareness of our points,” she says. “We all met with various assembly members and senators and discussed these points, representing our school and all schools in California.”

Although the capitol is a buzz with students from across the state during Capitol Convoy PVPUSD is the only district in Southern California to send students to Sacramento to represent our schools and communities.

Before the trip, students meet with a variety of experts in California politics, and education policy to learn about how the legislature works. The experience is impactful for students because it allows them to view the legislative process first-hand and meet with the people who actually represent them.

The group met with State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, who discussed the importance of mental health, universal meals and gender inclusivity. The Department of Finance’s Program Budget Manager Chris Ferguson spoke about where California funding is allocated and how the allocation is determined. California Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi enjoyed a meal with the students and discussed the fundamental causes of the mental health crisis and the improvement of infrastructure in PVPUSD schools all providing civic engagement for PVPUSD students at the highest levels.

In June 1923, ten years after Frank A Vanderlip, Sr. and a syndicate of buyers purchased the 16,000 acres that make up the Palos Verdes Peninsula, a real estate rally was held in Malaga Cove to interest potential buyers to the area.

Well over 30,000 people and 6,000 automobiles visited the grounds of what is now Malaga Cove School. Many came to picnic on the hills and learn about the grand plans for the Peninsula and to enjoy the airplane flyovers, yacht races, and athletic games for children.

The plan’s first subdivision with 3,200 acres, now the City of Palos Verdes Estates, was planned for the northwest portion of the Peninsula. It also included Miraleste, now in the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, to the east.

In 1923, the Palos Verdes Homes Association and Art Jury were established and responsible for the parks, streets, bluffs, playgrounds, amenities, and monitoring buildings specifications. La Venta Inn was completed, and a plant nursery was established in Lunada Bay to provide trees, shrubs and ornamental plants to the developing com-

munity. Plans for roads, utilities and town centers were well underway.

In just one year, over 3,000 homesites had been sold and by 1930 a number of the most recognizable buildings on the Peninsula were completed.

These include the Palos Verdes Golf Club, the Malaga Cove School, the Palos Verdes Beach and Athletic Club, the Malaga Cove Library, the Neighborhood Church, and Malaga Cove Plaza’s Gardner and Syndicate buildings and Neptune Fountain.

Further south, the Point Vicente Lighthouse was also completed as were the Vanderlip homesite stables (now the Portuguese Bend Riding Club) in Portuguese Bend.

While there were efforts to purchase and develop the remaining 13,000 acres according to the original plans, the early Palos Verdes Project didn’t have the necessary capital to make this happen.

In fact, fifteen years after development started and in the midst of the Great Depression, the Project stalled and found itself with fewer investors and a huge tax debt it couldn’t afford.

The dire tax situation led to the incorporation of the City of Palos Verdes Estates in 1939, the Peninsula’s first city. Although Miraleste was part of the first subdivision, it was excluded from the new city since it wasn’t contiguous to the northwest development.

The Peninsula population spiked dramatically after World War II, surging from just under 14,000 in 1950 to 54,000 in 1967. This ultimately led to the incorporation of the cities of Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates, both in 1957, followed by the City of Rancho Palos Verdes in 1973.

Planned for June 17, 2023, exactly 100 years to the day, DOP 2023 is a Peninsula-wide open house and an opportunity to learn this unique history and see how the Peninsula has grown. From architectural gems such as the Richard Neutra’s Palos Verdes High School, to our farming history with Hatano Farm, now a California Point of Historic Interest, to the Peter Weber Equestrian Center, capturing the Peninsula’s horse culture, it will be a day to create your own adventure and learn about the Peninsula’s past. A commemorative “passport” will be available to track the sites you visit.

SALMON WITH GARLIC CONFIT GARLIC CONFIT Make ahead. The longer the garlic sits in the oil, the more flavorful the oil becomes.

Ingredients: 1 head garlic, cloves removed, smashed & peeled 2 cups olive oil (or more if you want flavor infused olive oil to enjoy later) 1 sprig washed and dried rosemary Directions: 1. Place ingredients in small pot over very low heat until small bubbles begin to form throughout the bottom of the pan. (4-10 minutes. Careful not to burn garlic.)

2. Immediately remove from heat and let garlic continue to cook in the warm olive oil until cooled. The longer it sits, the more flavorful the oil will become.

3. Store in small, sealed jar or dish, making sure the garlic is covered in the oil to preserve.

TIP: Slow cooking garlic in olive oil yields two amazing results: one tender and mild flavored garlic cloves, and a two-flavored oil that can be used in everything! In this recipe, I will walk you through how to make this delicious Garlic Confit and teach you how to turn it into a flavorful paste for your salmon.

SALMON WITH GARLIC CONFIT Ingredients: 1 lb fresh salmon 4 Large cloves of garlic confit 2 tbl fresh thyme leaves 1 tsp lemon zest 1 tbl garlic infused olive oil 1 tsp lemon juice 1/4 tsp Kosher salt 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. 2. Place salmon skin-side down on baking sheet with lip that is lined with parchment paper.

3. Sprinkle salt and pepper on salmon.

4. Place garlic cloves, thyme, and lemon zest on cutting board.

Chop all together until a paste begins to form.

5. Move garlic, thyme, and zest to small bowl. Add olive oil and lemon juice. Mash with the back of a spoon and mix to combine.

6. Spread on top of salmon. (Optional: garnish with lemon slices and thyme leaves.)

Silicon Valley Bank, the 16th largest U.S. bank, had its doors shuttered by the Federal Reserve on Thursday, March 10, 2023.

Apparently, the bank lent heavily to the technology sector and failed to diversify its assets. The Fed aggressively raised rates in a manner never seen, and the value of the bank’s assets fell, making it hard for it to raise cash, which some believe is important for healthy banks.

Shortly thereafter, its former CEO, Greg W. Becker, fled to Hawaii, picked up lunch at Cheeseburgers in Paradise, and strolled through Lahaina in flip-flops.

I am not related to Greg W. Becker. I am Greg I. Becker or Gregory, as my mother calls me. I am not in Hawaii relaxing in the sun. I am avoiding the rain in my quiet office in Redondo Beach, writing an article that may help explain how to protect your bank deposits.

I had never heard of Greg W. Becker until the flurry of texts, emails, phone calls, and messages found me after the seizure. Comments have been endless. Even my dad piled on. He could not resist calling, asking if I was taking the call from jail. Probably the most memorable comment was from an angry client, who thought I was the bank’s CEO and accused me of withholding information on FDIC coverage.

I find this particularly intriguing. In addition to sharing a name with a CEO who is the target offender, I studied banking law in law school and money and banking were a part of my economics degree.

To many, the bank’s collapse was a surprise, but since 2021, the bank was under the supervision of the Federal Reserve. By July 2022, it had not fixed its vulnerabilities and fell under full supervisory review. Despite the bank’s vulnerabilities, Greg W. Becker was a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco Board of Directors up until the seizure. Clearly, there was a supervisory failure.

The Fed tells you that the bank used a bad model, preventing it from having access to cash in times of need. The bank might tell you that it issued longer-term debt at a low rate because the Fed led them to believe that inflation fears were not warranted. Despite the fear of inflation, the Fed did not raise interest rates for some time. Then, and now, embarked on a historical rate journey.

Maybe the magnitude of the unexpected hikes caught the bank in a rabbit hole from which it could not climb out.

While we wait to determine if SVB is the canary in the coal mine that sets off a chain reaction, one thing is sure, calls for more regulations to protect consumers will be made. In the meantime, you can protect yourself by reading FDIC pamphlet: Deposit Insurance at a Glance.

Golden retriever, Skye

Carrie and Scott Sommer have always had four-legged family members. Meet their newest addition to the family, five-year-old Golden retriever, Skye.

Where did you get your pet?

In late September 2018, we were totally unprepared for how empty our home would feel without our beloved almost 13-year-old Golden Retriever Gracie to whom we said goodbye. Gracie and our older Labrador Candy were both adopted from families that couldn’t care for them, so adoption or rescue was important.

I started searching the https://scgrrescue.org/ website and applied for no less than eight dogs before Skye came home. I feel that there was a reason we weren’t matched earlier because Skye fits our family as if she’s been with us forever.

Is there a story behind your pet’s name?

We had recently returned from Scotland and fell in love with the Isle of Skye and wanted to remember it, and it’s the perfect name for her.

Is anything special or unusual about your pet?

The most interesting part of Skye’s story is that she is from Turkey! She was rescued from a shelter outside of Istanbul at 18 months and had already had a litter of puppies. SCGR worked with another agency to bring her and several other

dogs to the States. We adopted her when she was 21 months old.

What do you like best about your pet?

For such a young dog, she is unbelievably calm and from the beginning listened well; she understands commands and is so gentle. She’s very in tune with other dogs and lies down when she meets a smaller dog, almost as if she’s trying to make them feel more comfortable. Her very best friend is our son’s French Bulldog Stitchie. Skye can also be a little moody and emotional.

My husband Scott feeds the squirrels in our backyard just so Skye has some entertainment.

She loves to watch them from the window and sometimes bolts out the doggy door to give chase. She has yet to catch a squirrel but has come close!

How spoiled is your pet?

OMG. Might she be the most spoiled dog in the world? She gets a portion of boiled chicken or roasted salmon mixed in with her kibble morning and night, plenty of treats, and daily walks. She sleeps on our bed where she commands middleof-the-night belly rubs. She has full reign of the house and knows it!

What else should we know about your pet?

We wish we knew more about her background and when her actual birthday is (March 2017 is all we know). We can’t imagine why someone would give her up, but we’re glad they did so she could come to us.
