As we turn the page into November, we’re thrilled to celebrate a major milestone for our community: a very happy 100 Year Anniversary to the Palos Verdes Golf Club! This historic gem has stood as a symbol of beauty, heritage, and camaraderie, right in our own backyard. We are truly fortunate to have such a remarkable and storied club as part of our community—a place that has brought people together across generations.

In 1913, Frank Arthur Vanderlip, Sr., a visionary financier and President of the National City Bank of New York, purchased 16,000 acres of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, sight unseen. Vanderlip’s ambition extended far beyond the coastline; he saw the potential for a grand community.

Driven by his love of European architecture and landscapes, he imagined a sophisticated city by the sea, meticulously designed and intentionally exclusive. This vision sparked the creation of what would become the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Celebrating its 100th year on the Peninsula, the Palos Verdes Golf Club stands today as a lasting testament to Vanderlip’s dream.

Reflecting on the club’s legacy, longtime member Sid Croft said, “Anytime someone asks how my day was, the most common answer I give is, ‘It’s just another day in paradise.’ Growing up on the Palos Verdes Golf Club course, this phrase became a part of my daily vernacular.”

The land’s development gained momentum in the early 1920s when Vanderlip established the Palos Verdes Project. The Palos Verdes Homes Association was formed, laying out a detailed zoning plan that prioritized green spaces and architectural harmony. Among the 800 acres dedicated to public use, 213 were designated for a golf course, a centerpiece of Vanderlip’s grand design.

“In the early days, the Palos Verdes Golf Club wasn’t the club it is today,” Croft shared. “There wasn’t a formal club until 1946; before that, it was simply known as the Palos Verdes Golf Course.”

Croft reminisced about his father, who worked for Vanderlip and had been part of the Palos Verdes story from the beginning. “My father was a member, and it was he and his friends who convinced Bud Oakley, the manager, to let them form an official club.”

In 1923, the Palos Verdes Golf Course took shape, celebrated for its integration with the rolling hills, barrancas, and ocean vistas that frame the course. By 1924, the course and its clubhouse were complete, opening to the public and quickly drawing golf enthusiasts from across the country. This hidden gem of a course offered golfers a unique challenge of modest length and strategic intricacy, a quality that endures to this day, even with the advent of modern equipment.

As Croft recalled his youth, he painted a vivid picture of the times: “My days were filled with riding my bike around the peninsula, an open expanse of land with hardly any houses or people.

Every Saturday, my friends and I would ride our bikes from dawn till dusk, exploring every nook and cranny of the undeveloped hills and cliffs.”

Through the decades, the Palos Verdes Golf Club grew in renown, and in 1955 it welcomed the LPGA for one of its first women’s professional tournaments. This event marked the beginning of a celebrated association between the club and the game’s most elite players, a legacy it continues to honor through high-level competitions and collaborations. The course has seen golfing legends, both men and women, walk its fairways, paying tribute to its timeless design while showcasing the future of the sport.

Reflecting on his early years working at the course, Croft shared, “When I was about fourteen, I started caddying at the club. Caddying was a tough job, especially during the dry months when the course turned hard as rock. We even had a local rule that allowed players to drop their balls out of the deep earth cracks that formed.” Despite the challenges, Croft says those years shaped him profoundly. “The memories of riding bikes, setting sprinklers, and learning life’s lessons on the fairways are indelibly etched in my mind.”

The Palos Verdes Golf Club today reflects its century-long history with pride. Its clubhouse, meticulously restored in 2004 and 2019, maintains its original Mediterranean style, offering members and guests a glimpse of its storied past alongside modern amenities. With sweeping views from Redondo Beach to Malibu and an elegant ballroom for social gatherings, the clubhouse has become a cornerstone of the peninsula’s community life, hosting events, weddings, and celebrations year-round.

“The course itself was unlike any other,” Croft said. “Its design, nestled among wild canyons and hills with stunning views of the ocean and mountains, made it a golfer’s paradise. I’ve played courses all over the world, but none compare to Palos Verdes. The unique topography, the mild weather, and the breathtaking views make it a place you never tire of.”

Anchored in tradition yet oriented toward the future, as the Palos Verdes Golf Club steps into its next century, it remains committed to preserving the spirit of Vanderlip’s vision while embracing the needs of modern golfers. With plans to maintain the course’s historic features and enhance facilities for future generations, Palos Verdes Golf Club stands ready to continue its legacy as both a landmark of Southern California golf and a vibrant community gathering place.

2024-2025 Kickoff Party The Palos Verdes High School Booster Club kicked off the 2024-2025 school year with an exciting annual Kickoff Party on September 21st at the home of Tracey and Whitt Lee. Attendees enjoyed a delicious charcuterie spread donated by The Original Giuliano’s Deli in Gardena, complemented by wood-fired pizza prepared on-site by The Urban Oven. Booster members also collected their new Sea King Swag, ensuring they are ready for game days ahead. TOAST ON THE COAST

The 4th annual Toast on the Coast was a sensational, sold-out success at Roessler Point in Malaga Cove last month. Guests enjoyed a perfect evening of flavors, sampling mouthwatering bites from the most popular South Bay restaurants alongside a curated selection of fine wines, craft beers, and signature cocktails—all while listening to live music against the stunning coastal backdrop. This premier food and wine festival brought the Palos Verdes community together to celebrate and support PEF, helping enrich essential programs for PVPUSD students and schools.

And the evening didn’t stop there—the celebration continued with the Toast on the Coast Wine Dinner, an unforgettable culinary experience featuring an exquisite multi-course meal and select wine pairings from Daou Winery. Blue Hour: Ocean Songs Blue Hour: Ocean Songs took place on September 28, 2024, and was held in our newly renovated Berth 60, the furthest south point at AltaSea with majestic sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. It also celebrated several milestones including our tenth year as an organization and our fifth annual Blue Hour event. This year featured engaging art installations from five talented artists, a moving choral performance by The L.A. Choral Lab, live music from The Classics Los Angeles Dance Band and amazing food from Trani’s Dockside, Miller Butler’s wood-fired pizzas alongside delicious desserts from Sirens by the Sea. The evening brought together a diverse group of scientists, artists, environmental advocates, philanthropists, and community leaders to raise awareness and support for AltaSea’s initiatives that will impact the local, national and global economies.

AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles is a nonprofit organization making a lasting mark on the future of Los Angeles and the planet through a unique public-private ocean institute that joins together the best and brightest in exploration, science, business and education. AltaSea is creating an urban, ocean-based research and blue technology innovation campus at the Port of Los Angeles where ocean innovators work together to understand and address current and future threats to our ocean environment. Tenants can enjoy an open workspace featuring their own modular offices and labs within a warehouse shell construction. Additionally, all science and business partners will have full access to the waterfront berths and docks. Hands-on education experiences will provide students an interactive opportunity to collaborate with scientists from around the world.

42nd Season Launch Dinner & Concert at PVGC Photos by Ed McClure

The Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay (COSB) launched its 42nd season on October 20 with a lively Pops Concert and Dinner at the Palos Verdes Golf Club (PVGC). COSB, an all-professional ensemble and the resident classical orchestra at the Norris Theater, is the only South Bay orchestra offering a full season with acclaimed soloists. This Pops Concert, a new concept for COSB, aimed to engage a broader audience from our four cities.

The highlight of the evening was the performance by local resident and TV and screen star, Tom Sullivan. Known for his rich Irish tenor, Sullivan brought his warmth and charisma to the stage, delivering a performance that felt both intimate and grand. Notably, he shared that he hadn’t performed with an orchestra in over a decade, dedicating more than 60 hours to prepare his repertory for this special concert. His personal connection to PVGC, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, added a layer of depth and gratitude to his performance.

Sullivan’s repertoire delighted the audience, but it was his stirring encore of “Danny Boy” that truly brought the house down. His heartfelt delivery left the crowd in awe, standing in applause as he shared his joy and appreciation for PVGC, which honored him with membership.

The relaxed format and a wonderful dinner by PVGC Chef Garrett Yokoyama made for a memorable evening, set against the Santa Monica Bay sunset. Annual Legislative Forum

Engaging with Our Representatives Photos by Ed McClure

On October 18, 2024, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce held its annual Legislative Forum at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, providing Peninsula residents with a rare chance to hear from key legislators in one setting. The forum featured Congressman Ted Lieu, Senator Ben Allen, Assembly Member Al Muratsuchi—who calls Palos Verdes home—and Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn. Although Congressman Lieu and Supervisor Hahn were unable to attend in person, representatives from their offices were present to share updates and answer questions.

Attendees were briefed on important topics affecting the Peninsula at the county, state, and national levels. The event offered an interactive platform where residents could engage directly with policymakers, ask questions, and learn about legislative initiatives impacting their community.

A luncheon followed the forum, allowing the conversation to continue informally and fostering further connections between community members and their representatives.

Halloween Festival Costume Contest On October 26th, Promenade on the Peninsula hosted it’s annual Halloween Festival where they had a haunted house, candy and treats, face painting, anime vendors, and a costume contest!

Partners for Pediatric Vision Build-A-Bear Event

On October 13, 2024, 20 children with permanent vision loss and their families, who receive services from Partners for Pediatric Vision (PPV), had the opportunity to create their very own stuffed bear during the much anticipated annual Build-A-Bear event at the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance. Each child with vision loss was paired with a Junior Vistas buddy from Vistas for Children, Inc. who guided them through each step of bear making. From stuffing, washing, dressing and naming their bears, the buddies provided support and described each experience. The children couldn’t wait to pick out clothing and accessories for their new stuffed friends! Each bear became a reflection of their personalities. The children also received glasses for their bears, thanks to PPV’s Parent Support Group Facilitator, Janice Goldhaber, MFT. PPV’s Family Specialist, Heather Dawson, made canes for the bears, adding a special touch. PPV is grateful to Vistas for Children, Inc. for sponsoring this meaningful experience.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy’s Third Grade Naturalist Program is celebrating its 30th year, and the impact on the local PV community has been profound. Holly Gray, Director of Education, reflects on the program’s significance, noting, “One immediate impact of the program is the joy that children experience as they get out in nature. Kids are naturally drawn to the outdoors, and exploring nature instantly ignites their curiosity.”

Since its inception, the program has cultivated a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural environment that surrounds the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Gray highlights how this connection stays with children long after the program ends.

“When I bump into graduates, they are often bursting with stories of wildlife they have suddenly taken notice of. Now they recognize that the bush growing behind their mailbox is a native lemonade berry, or that a great horned owl has been roosting at their school.”

The program’s multi-generational impact is also evident. “We have parents who can reflect on their experience as a child in the program, now volunteering for their own child’s field trip,” Gray shares.

Many former students even return as interns and docents, inspired by their time in the program. One memorable story involves a third grader who came back as a docent and is now pursuing a degree in environmental law at UCLA. “This continuity builds a culture of appreciation and caring for the local environment that is powerful.”

A core element of the program is the field trips to the natural preserves, combined with classroom lessons. Gray explains, “The foundational work we accomplish in the classroom comes alive during the field trip as students connect their knowledge with observations made directly in nature. That excitement fosters curiosity, which in turn propels scientific inquiry.” Whether students are smelling

sagebrush, tasting lemonade berries, or hearing the call of the California Gnatcatcher, these experiences foster a deeper understanding of science and nature.

The program’s alignment with Next Generation Science Standards ensures that it stays relevant and effective for schools. “We’ve carefully aligned our program with California State Content Standards,” Gray says. “It provides a way for educators to link global curricular concepts to local examples that are tangible.” Teachers often continue incorporating the program’s lessons long after it ends, creating lasting connections between students and the environment.

Docents play an essential role in delivering these lessons. “Our docents are the heart of this program,” says Gray. “Their love of the natural world instantly sparks the students’ curiosity.

The students treat our docents like celebrities, flocking to them with questions and eager to trade tales about their experiences in nature.”

Many docents have been involved since the program’s inception, with some teachers even transitioning to docents upon retirement. This enduring dedication underscores the program’s impact on the community.

Looking ahead, Gray is excited about new initiatives, such as moving classroom sessions outdoors. “Not surprisingly, the students have thrived in the outdoor classroom,” she says. “We hope to build on this success to maximize the students’ outdoor experiences.”

As the Third Grade Naturalist Program continues to evolve, its mission remains clear: to inspire future generations of environmental stewards through a deep connection with the natural world. “The cumulative impact of 30 years of this program is incredible,” Gray concludes. “We are creating a community that truly cares for and appreciates the natural environment.”

PV Magazine dropped by South Coast Botanic Garden (SCBG) to check out DOGtoberfest and were amazed by how many pups from the South Bay and greater LA area turned out to enjoy the festivities!

Dogs were able to enjoy a Doggy Marketplace, Dance Pawty and Obstacle Course as well as a stroll through the Garden and enjoy “The Bark Walk”. In addition, Pooch Parents could also enjoy Beer Sampling, plus Food and Beverage Stations. Below are just a few of the adorable four legged friends we met.
