This season brings new opportunities, and we are thrilled to honor the amazing teachers who guide our children every day. This month, we’re especially excited to share a unique project by Palos Verdes High photography teacher James Stiles. His new book, School’s Out for Teachers, shows our dynamic teachers in a different light, revealing another dimension to their lives outside the classroom. It’s a creative tribute to those who do so much for our community, and we can’t wait for you to experience it.

James Stiles, a celebrated photographer and dedicated Palos Verdes Peninsula High School teacher, combines his passions in the creation of an engaging new photography book, School’s Out for Teachers. This book, featuring photographic portraits of school staff, is a testament to Stiles’ ability to capture the multifaceted lives of educators, showcasing their rich, three-dimensional personalities beyond the classroom.

James Stiles has been a professional photographer for over 25 years, specializing in portraits, fashion, still lifes, and exhibition works. His distinguished career includes international and national publications and exhibitions alongside notable photographers such as Robert Mapplethorpe and Helmut Newton. Stiles has held one-person shows at prestigious galleries like MBM Gallery in SoHo, 12 | PVMagazine | September | 2024

NYC, and Drkrm Gallery in Los Angeles.

Stiles’ academic background includes a B.F.A. degree from The School of Visual Arts, and he holds two teaching credentials in art in California.

For the past 20 years, he has dedicated himself to teaching photography, spending the last 16 years at PVPHS. Additionally, he has taught at Otis College of Art & Design, sharing his expertise with aspiring artists.

Beyond his professional achievements, Stiles and his wife Kie have been married for 14 years. “Kie plays a pivotal role in the technical production of School’s Out for Teachers and she has been instrumental in maintaining the website for my classes at Peninsula, updating it with new student photo galleries every two weeks for the past 12 years,” Stiles shares.

The journey of School’s Out for Teachers began in the first half of the 2019-20 school year, only to be abruptly interrupted by the pandemic. Stiles resumed the project in the 2022-23 school year, capturing staff members without masks. “My objective was to reveal the depth and richness of these individuals beyond their professional roles, providing a glimpse into their personal worlds,” says Stiles.

Stiles invited PVPHS staff to bring personal items-whimsical, self-defining, or related to their hobbies and passions—for their portrait sessions.

This creative approach allowed him to explore and highlight the diverse interests and personalities of the staff. The result is a collection of portraits that not only showcases the staff but also fosters a sense of community, as colleagues get to know each other better through these images and the accompanying quotes.

In addition to his book, James Stiles will be showcasing his work at The Hive Gallery in their group show “Rising Stars of L.A.” this September.

Stiles will have his own wall of photos in the exhibit, further establishing his reputation as a prominent photographer in the Los Angeles art scene.

This summer, Peninsula High student Sean Pellicciarini traveled to Taiwan on a full scholarship through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Summer Intensive program to study Mandarin. NSLI-Y, launched in 2006 as part of a U.S. Government initiative, offers critical language programs aimed at fostering international dialogue, promoting economic prosperity, and enhancing national security through cross-cultural understanding. Sean was one of 540 students selected from thousands of applicants across the U.S. Sean reflected on his experience, particularly how working with diverse American students in the program helped him build understanding and collaboration skills. He noted that this was as important as interacting with locals in Taiwan.

Already set on studying engineering, Sean feels the program taught him independence and the value of working with people from different backgrounds. He plans to continue his Chinese studies by taking AP Chinese in his senior year.

Sean’s interest in NSLI-Y stemmed from his lifelong love of languages. He has been studying Mandarin since he was six, motivated by his Taiwanese heritage and a desire to communicate better with his grandparents and with Chinese teams in his competitive robotics work. He sees Mandarin as crucial for future engineering projects that may involve China or Taiwan, where many suppliers are based.

During his six-week stay, Sean spent four weeks in a hotel with other students and two weeks with a host family. He attended daily language classes and cultural activities at National Taiwan University, navigating local mass transit.

Highlights of his trip included visits to Taipei’s Longshan Temple, Taipei 101, and the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.

He also enjoyed hands-on experiences at a tea farm and a scallion farm, learning about local agriculture and culture.

Giving Back: KICKING FOR KENYA

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the world grappled with unprecedented challenges, Peter Chang, a student at Palos Verdes High School, was seeking a way to make a difference. Community service opportunities were scarce, but Peter wasn’t deterred. Instead, he took the initiative to create his own path, leading to the birth of “Kicking for Kenya,” a project that has since impacted hundreds of young lives thousands of miles away.

The idea for Kicking for Kenya began during a time of reflection and inspiration. Peter recalled the stories and images shared by close family friends who had relocated to Kenya a few years earlier. “The images of children playing soccer in flip-flops or barefoot, kicking makeshift balls crafted from plastic bags and recycled fishing buoys, really struck a chord,” he says.

Determined to make a difference, Peter reached out to his friends in Kenya with a simple yet profound idea: to send soccer balls to these children.

His role was to raise funds in the U.S., while his friends on the ground in Kenya secured the field and coordinated the teams. The tournament was a resounding success, laying the foundation for what Kicking for Kenya would become.

A year later, Peter had the opportunity to visit Kenya himself. Armed with more gear, including balls, jerseys, and cleats donated by the Palos Verdes soccer community, Peter and his friends distributed these items to several local clubs throughout Kenya. During that trip, they connected with around 200 young players, providing them with muchneeded equipment and, more importantly, a sense of hope and camaraderie.

Peter’s experience in Kenya left a lasting impression on him. He was deeply moved by the gratitude of the players and the warm welcome he received from the communities.

This experience fueled his desire to continue making a difference, and upon returning to the U.S., Peter took the next big step: he established a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, aptly named Game Changers Corporation.

Game Changers Corporation was founded with a clear mission: to use sport as a tool for positive change in people’s lives. For Peter, the most powerful takeaway from this journey was the overwhelming sense of gratitude. The players he met were incredibly thankful, not only for the donations but for the connection they forged with people from across the globe.

As Peter embarks on the next chapter of his life at Columbia University, where he will continue to play soccer, his commitment to Kicking for Kenya remains strong.

Peter Chang’s story is one of perseverance, community, and the power of sport to create change. What began as a response to the pandemic has blossomed into a beacon of hope for many, proving that one person’s determination can indeed make a world of difference.

As the Palos Verdes Golf Club marks 100 Year Anniversary in November, we delve into the life of one of the Club’s most dedicated figures, Mr. Jim Gormley, whose passion for the game and commitment to the Club have left an indelible mark.

Gormley’s love for golf began at a young age, driven by the allure of the sport’s challenges and the camaraderie it fosters. His journey as a golfer is a testament to his dedication and skill, attributes that have defined his career and relationship with Palos Verdes Golf Club.

While Gormley’s personal achievements on the greens are noteworthy, his story is deeply intertwined with the history and evolution of the Club itself. Reflecting on his early days, he credits influential figures like Mark Fowler for steering him back to the Club when he was on the verge of accepting a position on the East Coast. “Mark was the one who talked me into coming back here. He believed in the potential of what we could achieve together,” Gormley recalls.

The Palos Verdes Golf Club, now celebrating 100 years, is rich with stories and legacies. Gormley’s role at the Club is significant, particularly in his efforts to promote the LPGA and junior golf programs. His dedication to nurturing young talent and fostering a welcoming environment for female golfers has been instrumental in shaping the Club’s inclusive culture.

Gormley’s tenure as the head professional was not handed to him on a silver platter. It was the belief and support of the Club’s Board Members and many others that afforded him the opportunity to prove himself. “They took a chance on me, a young kid without much experience but with a willingness to work hard and do the right things for the Club,” Gormley reflects with gratitude.

He and his wife Melinda (Mindy) love and appreciate their lifestyle in Palos Verdes and relish in the joys of raising their three daughters; Megan (22), Bridget (19) and Paige (14). Megan graduated from Georgetown University in May. Bridget is a rising sophomore at Texas Christian University, majoring in business with a focus on finance. Paige is entering 8th grade at PV Intermediate School and competes with the Next Level team at Fusion Dance Studio.

The family leads a busy golf focused life. “I recently served as President of the Peninsula Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. and volunteer my time in the community and through my children’s

Megan Gormley: Megan Gormley, following in the footsteps of her golf pro father Jim, continues to focus on golf.

Megan graduated from Georgetown University in May with a major in political science and minor in theology. As the captain of the Georgetown University Women’s Golf Team, she was named Big East Player of the Year in 2024.

This fall, Megan will begin her Master’s in Sports Management at Georgetown while using her final year of eligibility to continue playing for the women’s golf team. She is excited to return to the place, where her dedication to both academics and athletics will undoubtedly continue to shine.

schools and activities,” Melinda says. “Jim and I met at PV Golf Club after my dad arranged a golf lesson for my sister and I and we are celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary this August, so PVGC holds a special place in our life.”

As he walks the course today, Gormley sees more than just fairways and greens; he sees a tapestry of memories, friendships, and the spirit of a family and community that has grown stronger over the years. His influence at the Club is seen not just in the programs he’s initiated but in the very culture that defines Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Club, Gormley stands as a symbol of its enduring legacy. His story is a reminder of the passion and dedication that keep the spirit of golf alive and thriving at Palos Verdes. As the Club looks to the future, Gormley’s legacy will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of golfers to carry forward the rich traditions and values that make Palos Verdes Golf Club a cherished institution.

Cancer Support Community South Bay New Gala Raises $340,000

Cancer Support Community South Bay (CSC South Bay) shifted to an evening gala for its 27th annual Celebrate Wellness event held on Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Westdrift Hotel in Manhattan Beach. The new gala attracted an unprecedented 33 sponsors and successfully generated $340,000 to support the 200 free programs that CSC South Bay offers each month for cancer patients and their loved ones. On-air game host and cancer survivor Kelly Miyahara was the special event host and welcomed a sold-out crowd of 300 guests.

During the cocktail hour, attendees perused the silent auction while enjoying live music provided by acoustic artist, Paul Lamire and magic tricks by award-winning magician Aaron O’Brien. The evening continued with dinner, an exciting live auction, dancing and more. Highlighting the program were inspiring words from CSC South Bay participants who expressed gratitude for the positive impact that the organization’s programs had on their lives.

Hosts “Life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula” Show Photographed by Steven Gonzalez

Destination: Art, as part of its 10th Anniversary Celebration, hosted the “Life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula” show in August. The Artists’ Reception on August 17 drew more than 150 guests to the work displayed in the unique studios and gallery art space. The exhibition was curated by award winning South Bay artists Stephen Mirich and Bernard Fallon who juried in the 17 other elite artists, and the more than 65 paintings in all mediums. The exhibition showcased beautiful landscape paintings in the traditions of the great California Impressionists of the early 20th century and of the oldest art association in California, the California Art Club.

Destination: Art was founded in 2014, and 2024 is a year-long celebration of its success. It is a community hub of engagement and outreach, rooted in the belief that art is essential to the flourishing of the human spirit, and connects to diverse audiences. Portuguese Bend National Horse Show Saturday Night Supper Honoring Volunteers and Guests Photographed by Ed McClure

Over 250 guests attended the Portuguese Bend National Horse Show (PBNHS) “Saturday Night Supper” on September 7th at Ernie Howlett Park. Held each year midway through the 3-day Horse Show, the Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital run (PCCH) event organized by chairs Vail Light and Hilary Waxler, is an evening of merriment and camaraderie for volunteers and their guests in support of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA).

“Saturday Night Supper is fun for our members because we get to share a piece of the horse show with our guests. It’s a needed break from all our hard work volunteering to make the show great for riders, trainers, and attendees alike,” explains PBNHS Chair Michelle Del Conte. “The tradition of Saturday Night Supper is one of celebration and gives members and guests a chance to socialize and let loose a little during week full of hard work. 66 years of Portuguese Bend National Horse Show is certainly something to celebrate,” adds PCCH President Sue Wilkinson While enjoying the aptly named “Jockeys and Juleps,” themed libations, guests were awed by the $10,000 Harman Jumper Classic, sponsored by Nan and Reed Harman. The Original Red Onion and owner Jeff Earle catered a tasty Mexican buffet. The band “American Made” got guests dancing to their lively country music.

Since its inception in 1957, PCCH has raised over 20 million dollars for CHLA. Each year in early September, the group transforms Ernie Howlett Park into their A-rated national horse show, creating a hometown festival atmosphere for families and riders. Wearing their signature blue-and-white checked shirts, PCCH’s cheerful multigenerational volunteers plan and staff the PBNHS with their cumulative efforts totaling over 15, 000 hours, all to benefit CHLA. Partners for Pediatric Vision & Vistas for Children Notes Bring Hope

Partners for Pediatric Vision (PPV) and Vistas for Children partnered up once again for their annual event, “Notes Bring Hope” free ukulele lessons and “Touch Tour “ at the Western Museum of Flight on July 28, 2024, at the Torrance Airport.

Volunteer musician Mark Fitchett of Fitchett Guitar School in Torrance shared his enthusiasm for playing ukulele with children who receive vision education and support services from the nonprofit, Partners for Vision. Vistas for Children coordinated the sighted buddies from Junior Vistas who were paired with a visually impaired child.

The ukuleles were gifted to the children, thanks to the generosity of Shari and Craig Sunada. A short walk away, the Western Museum of Flight welcomed the children and families for an upclose experience with aircraft and space exploration.. Trojan League South Bay Annual USC Send Off & 50th Anniversary

On August 12, 2024, The Trojan League of the South Bay (TLSB) held its annual Send Off event at the at the beautiful home of Dan and Marnie Gruen on Sunday August 4th. The event, which took place on a sunny afternoon, brought together over 100 USC parents and incoming and transfer students for a delightful meet and greet hosted by the local Trojan League.

The gathering provided an excellent opportunity for new students and their families to connect with the USC community. Returning scholarship students and Board Members shared their experiences and insights, offering guidance and support to the newcomers. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as students mingled and made new friends, while parents exchanged stories and built connections with one another.

This year’s event holds special significance as the Trojan League of South Bay celebrates its 50th Anniversary. The organization has been a pillar of support for the USC community in the South Bay area, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and tradition. To commemorate this milestone, TLSB will host a gala on November 14th, 2024. The event promises to be a memorable evening, honoring the League’s rich history and contributions over the past five decades.

a leader. Serving first as an Assistant Scoutmaster and then as Scoutmaster for Troop 783, he found himself managing a group that resembled a small company, with 100 Scouts and around 200 parents.

The troop, sponsored by the United Methodist Church in Rolling Hills Estates, was known for its vibrant activity, hosting over 30 events annually, ranging from weeklong hikes to bowling nights.

Despite the significant time and effort required, the experience was immensely rewarding, as it allowed Brill to witness young boys grow into men of character, equipped with valuable life skills and lifelong friendships.

Those days are past but his desire to see “what’s around the next bend” keeps him restless. Brill is about to embark on a 220-mile canoe expedition near the Arctic Ocean with professional explorer and author Adam Shoalts, where they’ll conduct research for Adam’s next book. “Success usually boils down to mental strength, not physical strength,” Brill asserts, explaining his philosophy on adventure. “Eventually, if I ever slow down or semi-retire I’d like to have a goal of spending 100 days a year in the field,” he explains with his trademark determination to make the most of the time he has left.

“At 65, I realistically have 10 more viable years of good mobility and high energy,” he admits. But with Brill’s relentless spirit, those years will be anything but ordinary. Whether he’s canoeing in the Arctic, trekking through the jungles of the Amazon, or driving a tuk-tuk through India, Chuck Brill is living proof that the real adventure lies just beyond the comfort zone.

Chuck Brill isn’t your average adventurer— his passion for exploration has taken him his passion for exploration has taken him far beyond his South Bay home. He’s a commercial real estate broker by trade, but his passion for exploration has taken him far beyond his Palos Verdes home and his comfortable South Bay real estate office. Most recently, Brill returned from an incredible 1,200mile journey through remote Northeast India, navigating treacherous roads and restricted zones in a humble tuk-tuk.

“A tuk-tuk is basically just a tricycle with a little engine strapped to the back,” he says with a chuckle. Yet, this wasn’t just any road trip; it was a daring expedition into a part of India where few foreigners have been allowed to visit.

Brill’s partner on this adventure was fellow Adventurers’ Club of Los Angeles member Jeff Holmes.

While averaging a mere 15 miles per hour, the two navigated wild traffic and poor road conditions.

“Jeff cracked his head pretty badly on the third day,” Brill recalls. Despite a three-inch gash that required stitches, Jeff insisted on continuing the trip. “I was impressed by his high pain tolerance,” he says, admiringly. Their entire hospital ordeal, including two CT scans and stitches, cost just $86.24 and took less than two hours. “Impressive,” he adds, reflecting on the healthcare they received in such a remote area.

Brill’s love for adventure runs deep, a trait that was fostered in his rural Pennsylvania upbringing.

“I grew up much like in the movie *Stand by Me*, with miles of woods and streams as my backyard,” he reminisces.

After moving to California in 1983, Brill began his 40-year career in industrial real estate, but he never lost his connection to the great outdoors. “I wanted my kids to connect with nature, to have that feeling of freedom,” he explains. This led to joining the Portuguese Bend Beach Club and buying into a large ranch near the Eastern Sierras, where his children learned to fish, handle firearms responsibly, and explore the wilderness.

Palos Verdes, particularly Lunada Bay, holds a special place in Brill’s heart. He and his wife Jennifer, who hails from Atherton in Northern California, landed on the Peninsula in 1994. They originally moved to Palos Verdes from Hermosa Beach when their children were born, “for a bigger yard, safer and quieter community, and better school district.

Now we love Lunada Bay for its perfect year-round Mediterranean-style weather, we love listening to the seals barking and the sound of the offshore buoy at night as we fall asleep.” Brill says.

Their grown son CJ, a former varsity soccer player at PV High, and grown daughter Lauren, a former cheer captain, both thrived in PV’s tightknit community. “It was nice to be within walking distance of the schools,” notes Brill.
