As the editor and owner of Palos Verdes Magazine, I am thrilled to present to you our latest issue, one that is filled with the energy and spirit of the dynamic youth in our community. The Palos Verdes Peninsula is not just a beautiful place, but also a peninsula that harbors big dreams and much talent.

In this issue, we turn our spotlight onto the remarkable young individuals who call Palos Verdes home, each setting forth on their own path in pursuit of their passions. Whether it’s carving through powder like Bea Kim, or masterfully strumming chords on a guitar like Saxon Weis, our youth are making waves in their own unique ways.

One such wave just crashed onto the mainstream music scene, Rec Hall, the up and coming band trio that has not only completed their first tour but also inked a deal with Arista Records, a testament to their unwavering dedication and undeniable talent. And let’s not forget Ruby and the Thorns, a group of young musicians who attend PVIS during the day and jamming music around town any chance that they can.

But this group of young people aren’t just making noise on stage; they’re also leaving tracks on the raceway. Jacob Yesnick has been on the fast track in the world of race car driving. At just 15 years old, he soared to the 13th place in the world rankings, a testament to his skill, determination, and the unwavering support of our community. We checked in with this graduate of PV High and see that his fast pace to success continues!

In addition to these stories, we invite you to dive into the heart of PV High’s broadcasting channel, Live at 205, a platform that has not only captured national acclaim but also serves as a testament to the power of creativity, innovation, and teamwork among our young minds.

And of course, no issue would be complete without our Around Town section, brimming with events and gatherings that not only entertain but also uplift and support our community. Behind each event lies the dedication of tireless volunteers, working to raise funds for causes close to our hearts.

Finishes Season 3rd Overall in the International Snowboard World Cup for the US Ski & Snowboard Team

A few weeks ago, we caught up with Bea Kim, the professional snowboarder hailing from Rancho Palos Verdes, whose story we featured in PV Magazine two years prior. Eager to check in on her latest achievements, we were astounded to learn of her remarkable journey through the World Cup circuit this past season. despite facing formidable challenges, including an unfortunate injury sidelining her from the dew Tour, Bea’s tenacity shone through as she secured an impressive array of qualifications, competing in prestigious events from China to Calgary. Notably, she clinched a remarkable second place at LAAX in Switzerland, marking her inaugural podium finish in a World Cup event. Finishing the season with a commendable third overall in the World Cup standings, Bea Kim’s achievements on the slopes leave us awestruck. Beyond her snowboarding, Bea’s commitment to environmental advocacy shines brightly. As a member of POW (Protect Our Winters) Athlete Alliance, she stands at the forefront of combating climate change, using her platform to champion sustainable practices and systemic solutions. Recently, her dedication led her to the united Nations International day of Sport for development and Peace, where she shared her profound connection to nature and the urgent need for collective action in preserving it for future generations. Bea Kim’s journey exemplifies not only athletic excellence but also a profound commitment to fostering positive change, both on and off the mountain.

How did living in palos verdes help advance you to this stage of your career?

While Palos Verdes is not exactly near the mountains, being able to come home and relax at the beach or with my family and friends has allowed me to keep a balanced life with my crazy schedule.

Who has been a big influence on you and why?

My dad has been a big influence in my life. We spend a lot of time together, and I am grateful for the relationship that we have. He has taught me so many things, but one important thing he has

taught me is that regardless of talent or skill, hard work is the most important thing. Even when something seems impossible or daunting, being able to look at a big goal as many smaller goals can lead to progression.

What do you think the key to your success and what would you tell other young people who want to succeed in the world of snow boarding?

I don’t think there is one particular thing that has contributed to where I am today, but I have always tried to stay true to who I am in both my regular life and snowboarding. It is easy to get caught up in what other tricks girls are doing or how the judges are scoring, but by only focusing on things I can control I know I am doing everything that I can. To other young people who want to succeed in snowboarding, I would tell them to keep their head down as much as possible and work hard.

What are your biggest challenges are and how how have you overcome them and really anything else that you want your community to know. Coming back from injury is always a challenge. The physical aspect is an obvious challenge with rehabbing the injury and regaining strength but the mental aspect is a challenge as well. Even though I love snowboarding, that doesn’t mean I’m not scared when I get back on snow.

“ I am extremely lucky to have an amazing support system with a lot of family and friends in PV, coaches on both the Mammoth Snowboard Team and the US Snowboard Team, my sponsors, and my teachers who have helped me balance snowboarding and my education.”

Jacob Yesnick, a native of Palos Verdes, is emerging as a rising star in the racing world, poised to etch his legacy on tracks worldwide.

“Since the age of 5, I’ve been immersed in racing,” reflects the extraordinary level-headed Yesnick. Poised to graduate from Palos Verdes High in June, this 18 year old embodies a formidable presence behind the wheel.

Beginning as a young go-kart racer, Yesnick has continuously secured championships across different levels of racing. Throughout his journey, he’s acquired skills and expertise in constructing, repairing, and mastering all aspects of car engines.

“ It’s been a whirlwind. I spent many days hanging on the fences at the Long Beach Grand Prix, it’s the only thing I ever wanted to do. My passion for speed and competition, along with my dad’s guidance, has been my driving force.”

An attorney working in the automotive and racing spaces, dad Charles brings extensive experience in the professional racing world. Currently focusing on his son’s career, Charles has always been Jacob’s biggest supporter. From ages nine to 13, Jacob raced with a factory car and consistently achieved victories. At 15, he and his team constructed their own car, leading him to secure a 13th place in the world rankings.

Car racing is clearly in Jacob’s blood. From diagnosing and fixing the most complicated engine problems to speeding down the asphalt at 160 mph, Yesnick insists there’s no alternative route for him.

“It’s like dancing on a razor’s edge,” he describes.

He’ll continue on to college and simultaneously work day and night to achieve his dreams and enjoy every moment of his life revolving around cars and the thrill of the race. “I’m a full time mechanic on my car working either at our place in Torrance or in Bakersfield,” he says.

Yesnick works out regularly to stay physically fit and keeps his head in the game to keep winning.

“The adrenaline rush is addictive, sure,” he admits. “But it’s the competition that drives me. The intensity, the focus, it’s unlike anything else.”

This year marks a significant leap for Yesnick as he steps onto the national Trans Am 2 circuit, building on his experience in the TA2 West Coast series. Yet, this is just a stepping stone towards his ultimate aspiration: competing in the prestigious European Le Mans series.

Yesnick thrives on the relentless challenge of racing, embodying unwavering dedication and ambition. He transcends the roles of mere driver or mechanic; he is a future champion, ceaselessly pushing boundaries and meticulously attending to every detail. With his sights set on the horizon, Yesnick is poised to leave an indelible mark on the world of motorsport.

indie music sensation REC HALL on tour

Palos Verdes’ very own indie sensation, Rec Hall is igniting the music scene with their fiery achievements. With their latest single, “How Long,” setting the charts ablaze since its early April debut, the band finds themselves basking in the glow of their musical triumphs. Fresh off a whirlwind cross-country tour alongside labelmate Beach Weather, these boys are ready to rock the world with their electrifying sound.

“I think we were all pleasantly surprised by how much we’ve enjoyed this tour. We’re a pretty low-key band — we like to write music with each other, surf, read, stuff like that, so it was nice to learn we have the ability to keep up with and even thrive in the madness that is touring,” says guitarist Ben Tyrrell.

“Meeting kind fans, seeing new cities, and constantly improving the way we perform — these were some of the most rewarding aspects of touring, second only to eating good food, of course,” Tyrrell says.

The band’s new track celebrates the tour experience. “How Long” is being called a compelling exploration of life on the road, blending themes of longing for home with the electrifying energy of live performances.

Tyrrell shares insights into the inspiration behind the song.

“It’s about desperately missing the stability and comfort of the people we love back home, while also sonically capturing the frenetic energy of a packed venue. We wanted it

to feel both dance-y and domestic; to evoke both the quiet bliss of coffee on nightstands and the electricity of a dance club,” explains Rec Hall’s guitarist.

Rec Hall’s rise in the indie music scene has been nothing short of meteoric. Following the success of their infectiously upbeat single “Pontiac” last summer and their debut sensation “She doesn’t Get It,” which has amassed over 18 million Spotify streams, the trio has captured the attention of audiences everywhere.

Comprising John Barry on guitar and vocals, Lance Meliota on drums, and Ben Tyrrell on guitar and bass, Rec Hall’s modern take on indie music has earned them a coveted spot on Arista Recordings’ roster. The band’s journey from jam sessions in their Palos Verdes garage to signing with a major label reflects their unwavering dedication and tireless work ethic.

Rooted in the South Bay’s vibrant music scene, Rec Hall draws inspiration from their coastal surroundings, infusing their music with elements of indie, rock, and coastal alternative. Their collective journey, which began during their high school days at Palos Verdes High and Torrance High, has evolved into a dynamic fusion of talent and creativity.

Ruby and the Thorns, a Palos Verdes home grown emerging rock band, is establishing their presence in the local music scene with their electrifying performances, infectious energy and impressive musical talent. Comprising six young members between the ages of 11 and 12, Ruby and the Thorns is making a name for themselves in the community.

The band’s journey began in late 2022 when Ruby Curtis, then 12 years old, along with her brother Theo and friend Julien Stepan, attended a band camp together. despite the camp’s cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances, the experience ignited a spark in the trio, prompting them to pursue their musical aspirations. With the addition of Hudson Nuccio, Henry, Cammidge and later Sophia Rodrigues, Ruby and the Thorns solidified their lineup and embarked on a remarkable musical journey.

driven by their shared passion for music, the band who met when they all attended Silver Spur Elementary school, quickly gained momentum, landing their first official gig at The End in Torrance in late February 2023. Since then, the fifth and sixth graders have graced stages, captivating audiences with their electrifying performances at festivals and events across the South Bay.

“We put our feelers out and heard about a coach in Hermosa Beach who helps train young bands,” explains band mom Tamsyn Curtis. “He thankfully took on the kids, and we then recruited Hudson, who was already learning guitar, followed by Henry who wanted in on the band so he bought himself a bass and had to be a quick study.”

Ruby and the Thorns’ eclectic repertoire features a mix of tunes, predominantly from the 80s, showcasing their versatility and musical prowess. From classic hits like “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis to modern favorites like “Brazil” by declan McKenna, the band’s performances are a nostalgic journey through musical history.

As for their unique name, Curtis recalls, “We were driving to band practice, and I commented ‘wow Ruby, you really are the rose amongst these thorns’ and that just stuck.”

Embracing their distinctive identity, Ruby and the Thorns channel their edgy, cool vibe into every performance, with Ruby donning red attire while her bandmates sport black.

Looking ahead, the band is poised for even greater success, with a lineup of upcoming performances. “The kids also just released their first single, Redhead, in February and they’re currently working on 3 additional original songs,” shares Curtis.

With their infectious enthusiasm Ruby and the Thorns are poised to leave an indelible mark on the local music scene.

SAXOn WEISS plays BeachLife & releases album

Palos Verdes Intermediate School sixth grader Saxon Weiss easily embodies the old adage “age is just a number and your talent will never fail you.” Music ignited his passion within the walls of his family’s church, where rhythmic beats captured his heart. His journey began with a drum kit at the tender age of 2.

“I loved playing the drums, but I was determined to start playing guitar,” recalls 12 year old Weiss. The challenge of the guitar’s size led him to the ukulele, which he found more manageable. “I taught myself how to play songs I liked, and even performed on stage in Hawaii when I was 6 years old,” he shares.

By the age of 8, Weiss was ready to tackle the guitar comfortably. drawing from his experience with Hawaiian music, he began playing Hawaiian Slack Key guitar by ear before delving into formal lessons.

“I recognized that taking classical guitar lessons would be best to develop proper technique and learn to read music,” he explains. Fuelled by his natural affinity for music, Weiss soon found himself diving into music theory with a focus on jazz standards.

His passion for live performance and improvisation has led him to share the stage with renowned musicians such as Tal Wilkenfeld, Jackson Browne, and Michael Landau.

“ I love playing various styles of music; there’s a great freedom in being versatile,” says the young guitarist.

“Performing at Norman’s Rare Guitars in Tarzana and appearing on Joe Bonamassa’s podcast ‘Live From Nerdville’ were incredible experiences,” adds Weiss.

Prepare to witness the ascent of this musical prodigy. On May 5th, all eyes will focus on Weiss as he steps into the spotlight at the Beachlife Festival in Redondo Beach. The opportunity to grace the stage at his hometown’s most prestigious event is nothing short of a dream come true for him. With his guitar in hand and a heart full of passion, he stands ready to captivate the crowd on the Speakeasy Stage.

His setlist, a blend of original compositions and cherished covers, has been meticulously crafted to showcase his undeniable talent and infectious energy. With each strum of the strings and every soulful note, Weiss promises to deliver a performance that will leave the audience spellbound.

For Weiss, who plans to release his first album soon, the Beachlife Festival isn’t just another gig, it’s the culmination of years of dedication and hard work. As he stands before the cheering crowd, he knows that this moment is his time to shine, and he’s determined to make it count.

Jessica donovan, the newly appointed Head of School at Chadwick, brings her own brand of enthusiasm to the forefront of education as Chadwick’s 14th Head of School since it was founded in 1935. With a passion for innovation and a commitment to nurturing young minds, donovan is poised to lead Chadwick into an exciting new chapter.

Palos Verdes Magazine caught up with donovan to learn more about her.

pvm: Congratulations on your new role as Head of School at Chadwick! What inspired you to pursue a career in education leadership?

Jd: Thank you. I believe in the transformative power of learning. I’ve always been passionate about creating environments where students feel inspired to explore, grow, and realize their full potential. I became an educational leader because it allows me to effect positive change on a broader scale and advocate for innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

pvm: What do you envision for the future of Chadwick under your leadership?

Jd: This is such an exciting time to be in education. We know so much more about how the brain works and how to optimize learning. My goal is to have Chadwick be a place where every student feels valued, challenged and supported. Our faculty and staff are working collaboratively and across all disciplines to cultivate critical thinking skills, promote diversity, equity and inclusion, and prepare students

to thrive in an ever-evolving world. Artificial Intelligence will change how we educate and what we learn, and I believe Chadwick is poised to be a leader in student-centered learning in this new era.

pvm: How do you plan to uphold Chadwick’s commitment to academic rigor while also embracing innovation?

Jd: Chadwick has a rich 89-year history here in Palos Verdes, and we are known for our high academic standards. I’m dedicated to keeping our traditions alive and at the same time introducing innovative teaching practices and curricular enhancements that empower students to think creatively, solve complex problems, and adapt to a rapidly changing global landscape.

pvm: In what ways do you hope to engage with the broader Palos Verdes community as Head of School?

Jd: Building strong partnerships with the Palos Verdes community is vital to Chadwick’s success. I am working toward collaborating with local school leaders, organizations, businesses, and community leaders to enrich all our students’ educational experiences, foster connections, and create opportunities for meaningful dialogue and engagement. Together, we can create a vibrant, interconnected community dedicated to lifelong learning and growth.

pvm: How are you enjoying life in Palos Verdes?

Jd: I love living here. I thank my lucky stars every day that we landed here. The weather is beautiful, the people are lovely, and there is so much to do. When we drive by the incredible vistas my husband and I often say to each other, “Can you believe we live here?” It has been an instant community for me. I’m surrounded by educators who are dedicated to our mission and our children, and the families have been so welcoming.

pvm: Tell us about your family.

Jd: I have 2 sons and 2 stepdaughters ranging in age from 21 to 27. They are four very different kids, but they are all following their passions and contributing to their communities in meaningful ways. My husband Ed is a lawyer. He practiced corporate law for 30 years. He tried to retire but ended up starting a small law firm with former partners. Their firm focuses on human rights and environmental rights cases.

pvm: How do you spend your free time?

Jd: We love to host people at our home, (Ed is a great cook), visit with family, read, travel, see live entertainment and take our dog for adventures. Ed is a great golfer, and I am learning to play.

pvm: What else do you want the community to know about you?

Jd: I’m a teacher in my heart. I love education. I love thinking about how children’s brains work, how we choose what to teach them, and what we can do in education to help them to become successful adults.

The Challenger Basketball Program is an adaptive sports program that is sponsored by the Palos Verdes Youth Basketball League (PVYBL). The program is noncompetitive and focuses on basketball fundamentals and fun! The program works with a buddy system that pairs youth volunteers with Challenger participants who have physical or developmental challenges. The buddies ensure players a safe, fun, and memorable experience. PV Magazine had the opportunity to talk with quinn Mulkey who runs Challenger Basketball in Palos Verdes. quinn explained that when her son was in high school and was looking for services hours, he asked why there was not a Challenger Basketball program on the Peninsula. He was aware of Challenger Baseball and Football, but at the time there was not a Challenger Basketball program. Her son was inspired to start a program, the first hurdle was finding court time. The different Challenger programs operate under the umbrella of other organizations such as Little League and Pop Warner which assist with insurance, expenses, facilities etc. To get Challenger Basketball started, they partnered with a local basketball sports program and were able to secure court time on Sundays. The next hurdle was developing adaptive gear such as creating special basketball hoops from trash cans and plywood, and balls with bells for the visually impaired. Through trial and error, they developed drills and games that worked for the participants, which included young kids through young adults up to age 22 with special needs. Today the program is sponsored by PVYBL and serves up to 56 participants per season with 120 to 130 youth buddies. They play at the PVP High School gym, and the program runs 8-10 weeks depending on court availability. Athletes register to participate and volunteers drop-in to help with as many sessions as do-able. The program is so popular they have a waiting list for athlete participants. Although this means quinn worries weekly about having enough volunteers to offer athletes one-onone support, there has been overwhelming support from the volunteer community. They also have three assistant coaches, including one from each high school, who brought new energy to the program and helped ready many participants to play a game independently. quinn says it is incredible to watch the friendships, communication, and engagement for both the participants and the volunteers. The participants experience developmental growth while the volunteers grow in empathy and compassion. quinn says the program “is a life changing opportunity for those involved”.

Live From 205, Palos Verdes High School’s award-winning and fully student operated broadcast channel introduced to the school in 2005. Along with their devoted teacher, Mr. Beaucar, this small team of students directs and produces two episodes a week for their peers, faculty, and others to enjoy.

These 10 to 20 minute episodes consist of and incredibly engaging content, including: school activities, updates on the hill, new and upcoming businesses in the area, events, school sports, and many more relevant affairs that transpire in the South Bay. With each episode taking about four days to complete, the students are able to research, interview, and visit new people and places for the community to learn about in the upcoming episode.

This exceptionally prestigious program has won over 60 individual student awards, three team awards, and eight excellence awards. Their most recent award was the 2024 Broadcast Excellence Award, exhibiting the true talent that it takes from a student to be a part of life from 205. Now Live from 205 has a reputable name, making them one of the number one high school news programs in the country.

Rolling Robots Students Go to Robotics World Championship

It is impressive to hear that nine Rolling Robot VRC teams have qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship in dallas, Texas April 25-30, 2024! From designing their robots to refining their coding skills and polishing their driving techniques, it is evident that they have poured their passion and effort into their preparations. The team members pictured are from Palos Verdes and the South Bay area. It is also noteworthy that many of the team members have been learning and evolving with Rolling Robots for several years, highlighting their commitment to continuous improvement and learning.

As they head to VEX Worlds to represent our VRC community, these teams carry with them not only their technical skills but also the invaluable experience and knowledge gained from previous years of participation. Peninsula High School’s Annual “Walk for Life”

Palos Verdes Peninsula High School’s annual “Walk for Life” united over 750 participants, including students, faculty, and community members, to raise $30,000 for cancer patients and their families. Led by Activities director Kimi Hendrick, the event featured poignant speeches by PVPHS students, sharing personal stories of loss and resilience in the face of cancer. Principal dr. Brent Kuykendall emphasized the event’s significance in acknowledging the challenges faced by those affected by cancer. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of $15,000 checks to representatives from Cancer Support Community South Bay and City of Hope, underscoring the impact of collective compassion and solidarity in supporting vital services for cancer patients and their loved ones.

Cancer Support Community South Bay (CSC South Bay) is a nonprofit affiliate of the international Cancer Support Community network, providing over 200 monthly programs for individuals and families affected by cancer, free of charge. NOVAS Seniors Graduation Class of 2024 is Recognized for Service to Torrance Memorial Medical Center

The Luminaries and Novas of Torrance Memorial Medical Center are non-profit volunteer groups founded in 1990 providing services and financial donations to the hospital. To date, they have donated over $540,000 to support many important hospital projects. Congratulations to the 18 graduating high school seniors from the Novas of Torrance Memorial Medical Center. Collectively they contributed over 7,000 service hours of service to support patients and staff. Since September 2021, they have been incredibly good to healthcare workers by treating them to thousands of baked good items along with care packages for staff and patients.

On March 15, 2024, the Palos Verdes Golf Club played host to PV High’s Booster Club’s largest fundraiser of the year. With the aim of supporting the three pillars of Academics, Arts, and Athletics the community rallied together for a memorable evening. Vibrant with the spirit of Palos Verdes High School, students took center stage, showcasing their talents and achievements. The event commenced with a spirited procession led by the PV High cheerleaders and marching band, guiding proud parents into the elegant ballroom. Throughout the evening, students participated in the event. The PV High Musical Theater performed, students from PVIT (Palos Verdes Institute of Technology) demonstrated their innovative robots and a silent auction featured student artwork, adding an enriching cultural dimension to the festivities. Attendees not only enjoyed a night of entertainment but also played a role in bolstering the educational and extracurricular pursuits of PV High.

Recently the Muskwa Club and the Toberman Neighborhood Center celebrated the unveiling of Project Proteus, a high-endurance unmanned air vehicle which was designed to help save the critically endangered vaquita porpoise. Project Proteus was the result of a STEM education program that put early-career aerospace industry professionals together with local middle, high school, and college students from diverse backgrounds to create an aircraft that will assist with a conservation program for the critically endangered vaquita porpoise. The unveiling of Air Vehicle 001 christened the don Eichhorn, took place on March 16, 2024 and was a capstone project for this STEM group. The inspiration for the name comes from long time PV resident don Eichhorn who was an early mentor for the Muskwa Club and they wanted to honor his lifetime of service to the ocean and community.

PV Magazine had the opportunity to speak with founding Muskwa Club member William Whittenbury, now an aerospace professional who has been volunteering and mentoring students involved in the Project Proteus. William explains that Muskwa Club started on the Peninsula in 2003 when a group of elementary school students formed the club during their lunch break, in 2010 the same kids re-started the club in middle school. Early on the group began to be drawn to environmental advocacy and after learning about the endangered vaquita, in 2012 they decided to make that their focus. The Muskwa Club is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and their mission is to advance technological, environmental, and social progress while supporting each other.

William explains that it was daunting when the group first started working towards saving the vaquita over 10 years ago, at the time there were only 250 vaquitas left and the outlook was that they would go extinct by 2015. The group began an awareness campaign and in 2013 they started the International Save the Vaquita day in partnership with the American Cetacean Society. They also shared about the vaquita online and on social media, participated in lectures, and in-person awareness booths. Over the last decade over 200 student volunteers have been involved, and members participate from around the country and even internationally. The Muskwa Club will participate in this year’s Whale of a day celebration and William says the event will be the 78th in-person awareness booth for the organization since 2012. It is inspiring that some of the original club members continue to be involved mentoring students, and

some have even pursued careers in environmental law. William explained for many they continue because they believe in the cause and “because it is the right thing to do.”

William stresses “it is easy to feel you cannot make a difference and say, ‘nothing I can do about it’, but a small group can make a big difference.”

Although the vaquita is down to just 10 to 15 left in the wild, that is up from just 8 in 2020, and the numbers are trending up for 2024. Now Project Proteus air vehicle will monitor for illegal fishing and search for vaquita porpoises which will further help with conservation. William concludes about the Muskwa Club and its young members, “we actually did make a difference!”
