They say, love where you live, and that couldn’t be more true for me. As a longtime Palos Verdes resident, I am reminded daily of how lucky we are to call this place home. With the arrival of spring, the hills are green, the ocean sparkles just a little brighter, and everywhere you look, there’s another breathtaking view. It’s a time of renewal and appreciation, and I’m so grateful to be part of such a special community.

In this issue, we are honored to highlight Robert Medawar, who was recognized as Citizen of the Year by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. His dedication and contributions to this Community make him truly deserving of this recognition, and we are thrilled to share his story.

We were also deeply moved by the story of Ryder Elkins, whose quick thinking and CPR knowledge saved his father’s life. Ryder, along with his mother Heather, is now on a mission to promote the importance of learning CPR—an incredible reminder of how one skill can make all the difference.

In the heart of Palos Verdes, where tradition meets innovation, Robert Medawar stands as a beacon of resilience, craftsmanship, and unwavering commitment to his community. Honored by the Chamber of Commerce as the Palos Verdes Citizen of the Year, Medawar is not just a master jeweler but a man whose life story is woven with dedication to his craft, his family, and the place he calls home.

Robert Medawar’s journey into fine jewelry began well before he founded Medawar Fine Jewelers in 1979. His family’s legacy in the trade dates back to the 1920s when his grandfather first established a shop in their homeland. The tradition continued with his father, and in 1975, the Medawar family left Lebanon in search of a new life in the United States.

Master Clockmaker Michel Medawar, Robert’s father, shared his son’s passion for craftsmanship and horology. As a tribute to their new homeland, in 1987, Michel Medawar donated the first Flower Talking Clock in the U.S. to Palos Verdes, what Medawar called “the paradise in which we live.”

His expertise and dedication to the art of timekeeping were integral to the project, symbolizing both gratitude and a lasting gift to his community.

Reflecting on his 45 years in business, Robert Medawar’s gratitude is palpable. “We appreciate what we have,” he says. “The freedoms, the opportunities. When you work hard, offer a good product, and conduct business with honesty, you will thrive.” This philosophy has not only guided his professional journey but has also solidified his store’s reputation as a pillar of the community.

Medawar Fine Jewelers is not just a place to purchase beautiful pieces; it is where lifelong relationships are built.

For Medawar, jewelry is not merely about luxury; it’s about storytelling. “Anybody can sell jewelry,” he explains. “What we do is build relation-

ships.” He recalls a particularly touching moment when a couple visited his store, sharing that their parents had bought their rings from him 35 years prior. “That brought a tear to my eye,” he admits.

“Seeing the seeds we planted come to fruition, that’s the joy of this business.”

One of his most memorable projects involved a customer who, upon retiring, wanted to surprise his wife with a breathtaking canary yellow diamond. The elaborate custom designed piece was delivered as the couple was on the way to the airport, just in time for a romantic anniversary atop the Eiffel Tower. Later that evening, Medawar’s phone rang. “Robert, I love it,” the client’s wife gushed from Paris. “It’s exactly what I wanted.”

That moment, he says, epitomized the trust and artistry his business is built on.

Beyond jewelry, Medawar has an enduring passion for horology, the intricate science of timekeeping. Trained in Switzerland, he honed his skills at one of the top horology schools, mastering everything from mechanical watches to atomic timepieces.

“I still find therapy in sitting at my bench, taking apart a Patek Philippe, identifying an issue, and restoring it to perfection,” he shares. Though technology has revolutionized watchmaking, he

holds a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship of antique timepieces. “I collect pocket watches from the late 1800s,” he says. “Each one is a piece of art.” Through all his achievements, Medawar credits family with shaping his journey. “We raised our kids with the mindset that one day they would grow their wings and fly,” he says, recognizing that his daughters Rachelle and Rebekah, are now adults and building lives of their own. This reality became even more poignant as he and his wife Sheila recently celebrated Rebekah’s wedding, a milestone that filled him with both pride and nostalgia.

Sheila has been a steady force in Medawar’s life. Their love story, deeply rooted in shared faith and values, is symbolized in the ring she wears, one that has evolved over the years. “At our 10th anniversary, I offered to upgrade her diamond,” he recalls. “She refused, saying she wanted to pass it down to our daughters.” When their son-in-law, Matthew, proposed to Rebekah, he unknowingly became part of that legacy, presenting her with the very diamond Robert first gave to Sheila decades ago.

Medawar’s dedication extends far beyond his store’s walls. For nearly 40 years, he has served as a reserve police officer, a role that allows him to give back to the community he loves. “I was approached by the police chief in 1984,” he says.

“They wanted professionals to join the reserve program, so I went through the academy and became a sworn officer.” Today, his expertise in appraising and documenting jewelry plays a crucial role in solving crimes. He has even testified in court cases, ensuring justice is served.

Additionally, his work with the DEA’s Survivors Benefit Fund provides financial support and education for the families of fallen officers. “Helping those who sacrifice for our safety is something I’m deeply passionate about,” Medawar shares.

As Medawar Fine Jewelers celebrates its 45th anniversary, Robert Medawar remains committed to staying ahead of industry changes while maintaining the personal touch that has defined his business. Whether upgrading equipment to detect lab-grown diamonds or expanding inventory to cater to new generations, he ensures his store evolves while preserving its core values. “Trust is everything,” he says. “It takes years to build, and we never take it for granted.”

Ryder Elkins a pv High Hero’s mission to save lives Written by Mela n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

It was a night like any other until it wasn’t. On October 18, 2023, Ryder Elkin’s world flipped upside down when his father, Matt, collapsed without warning in their family’s Palos Verdes home. In that moment, Ryder, a sophomore at Palos Verdes High School, transformed from an ordinary teenager into a lifesaver.

“I heard this strange gurgling sound, and at first, we thought he was just snoring,” recalled Heather Elkin, Ryder’s mother. “But when I shook him and he didn’t respond, I knew something was terribly wrong.”

Panic threatened to take over, but instinct prevailed.

Heather dialed 911, while Ryder, relying on skills he had learned years earlier in Junior lifeguards, jumped into action. When his mother grew exhausted performing chest compressions, Ryder took over without hesitation. He counted steadily, ensuring compressions were deep and rhythmic. “I kept thinking, ‘I have to keep going, I can’t stop,’” Ryder said. “I remembered the beat of ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and just focused on that.”

Minutes stretched like hours as they worked tirelessly, their efforts fueled by sheer determination and love. Ryder’s sister, Sienna, ran to alert neighbors, one of whom helped move Matt to the floor for better compressions. Finally, after an agonizing 10-minute wait, paramedics arrived, using an AED to restore Matt’s heartbeat before rushing him to Torrance Memorial Medical Center. After an induced coma and emergency surgery, Matt made a full recovery.

The experience left an indelible mark on Ryder. Realizing how crucial CPR had been in saving his father’s life, he made it his mission to ensure others were just as prepared. “Most people don’t think they’ll ever need to use CPR,” Ryder said. “But the truth is, cardiac arrests happen at home all the time. You don’t want to be helpless when it’s someone you love.”

Determined to spread awareness, Ryder founded the PVHS lifesavers Club, working alongside the American Heart Association to bring hands-only CPR training to his school. At their first event, over 100 students learned how to perform compressions, an achievement that filled Heather with pride. “Watching those kids practice, knowing my son is making a difference, it’s incredible,” she said.

California remains one of the ten states that do not require CPR training in schools, a fact that Ryder is determined to change. His goal is to ensure every student gains the confidence and knowledge to act in an emergency. Moving forward, he plans to set up mannequins on campus once a month so students can practice this lifesaving skill.

“It’s not about being a hero,” Ryder said. “It’s about making sure no one has to stand by helplessly while someone they love needs them.”

Ryder Elkin’s journey from a terrifying night to a community-driven mission is a testament to the power of preparation and determination. He isn’t just teaching CPR he’s inspiring a movement, ensuring that more people are ready to step up when it matters most.

How to perform Hands-only CpR

If someone collapses suddenly, here’s what to do: 1. Call 911 immediately.

2. Check for responsiveness and breathing.

3. Position yourself correctly: Kneel beside them and place the heel of one hand in the center of their chest. Stack your other hand on top, fingers interlocked.

4. Start compressions: Push hard and fast, at least two inches deep, at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute— matching the beat of “Stayin’ Alive.”

5. Keep going until medical help arrives. Every second matters.

Destination Art

Vibrant Shade of Pink Exhibition

Destination: Art, the South Bay’s community hub for art, attracted more than 200 guests to its reception for The Vibrant Shade of Pink exhibition on February 8, 2025. Over 100 works from traditional media to collagraph to photography by 70 artists exemplified the color theme—the blend of red’s passion and white’s purity. This third annual Open Show broke another Studio of Elissa DiCarlo record for the number of fine art pieces submitted. The artwork can be seen online at https://www. destination-art.net/vibrant-shade-of-pink-show-2025 through March 1. In addition, Carol Francis—artist, licensed family/marriage therapist and author—hosted a gathering for her solo show of 50 works at the Destination Art lounge. Francis’ work will be on exhibit through March 31.

Palos Verdes Mavericks Varsity Cheer Places 3rd at Nationals The Palos Verdes Mavericks Varsity Cheer team brought home a third-place finish at the National Jamz Cheer Competition in Las Vegas, NV, on Sunday, February 2. Often referred to as the “Olympics of youth cheer,” earning a spot on the podium is a significant achievement.

The 8th-grade team is part of the Palos Verdes Pop Warner Youth Football and Cheer program, with many of the cheerleaders having participated for several years.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Amy Friedman, the team trained tirelessly with the guidance of Palos Verdes High School cheerleading trainers Kate Warner, Julia Hoffman, Norah Lees, and Isabelle Tholan, who helped choreograph the competition-winning routine. Team Manager Josephine Balzano and assistant coaches Cyndi Barnes, Hollie Brekke, and Julie Wesley provided invaluable support throughout the season.

Congratulations to the Mavericks on this outstanding achievement!

Educator of the Year

The 44th Annual Educator of the Year celebration was once again held live at Palos Verdes Golf Club. Attendees gathered to honor and celebrate some of the most inspiring individuals on the Peninsula—our educators.

Recognizing Peninsula teachers has been one of the great privileges of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary Club, and this year’s event introduced nine outstanding educators who were honored as Educators of the Year: Lynda Louise (Lunada Bay Elementary School), Donna Villaescusa (Soleado Elementary School), Molly Steinberg (Dapplegray Elementary School), Zuriñe Lekuona (Chadwick School), Bryan Godbold (Mira Catalina Elementary School), Kurt Hay (Palos Verdes Intermediate School), Blanca Magaña (St. John Fisher School), Mary Fournier (Palos Verdes Peninsula High School), and David Witthoff (Crestmont College).

Since 2009, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary Club has proudly hosted this special event. Co-Chairs Joan Behrens and Rick Humphrey, along with dedicated members of the PVP Rotary Club, worked to present an evening of celebration and recognition. In conjunction with Educator of the Year, the Club also raised funds to provide college, vocational, and STEM scholarships to deserving students from the Peninsula and the LA Harbor Boys & Girls Club. Over the last decade, the Club has distributed $460,000 in scholarships, a testament to the community’s generosity and commitment to education.

Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation Gala

Terranea Resort sparkled with excitement as our community boogied the night away in support of Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers San Pedro and Torrance. The Studio 24 theme provided an inspiring backdrop for our signature annual gala, which featured cocktails with a gorgeous ocean sunset backdrop, delicious food and electrifying entertainment. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when guests were shown two compelling stories of lives saved and changed here at LCM due to the above and beyond care provided. Special Children’s League

Under the Tuscan Sun Annual Benefit

On November 22, 2024, Special Children’s League hosted their annual benefit at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, raising over $175,000 to support the various programs they champion. The event featured a boutique, silent auction, and luncheon, with members and guests gathering under this year’s theme, “Under the Tuscan Sun. “I am thrilled to share the outstanding success of our event,” said Suzan Fairchild, SCL President. “It’s heart-warming to see these much-needed funds go toward improving the lives and spirits of individuals with developmental challenges.”

The day began at 10 a.m. with the Boutique and Auction, followed by the Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Special Children’s League, founded in 1957, started when a small group of women united to support a friend whose child had cerebral palsy. Over the years, the group has remained committed to helping others, bound by their shared desire to make a difference.

Last year, Special Children’s League gifted $215,000 to programs they support, including: Momentum (formerly United Cerebral Palsy of Los Angeles), AbilityFirst Camp Paivika, Able ARTS Work, Achievable Health, Exceptional Minds, ICAN California Abilities Network, Manes for Movement, Momentum Pediatric Therapy Network (PTN), Mychal’s Learning Place, Our Village, Palos Verdes Peninsula School District programs for students with special needs, Partners for Pediatric Vision, Ride to Fly, Switzer Learning Center, The United States Adaptive Recreation Center, and We Are Brave Together.

L.O.L. for Charity Event

On a rainy evening in San Pedro, on Sunday January 26, 2025, Las Candalistas hosted the sold out L.O.L. for Charity at Michael’s Tuscany Room. Guests were treated to a fun filled evening with our MC for our event, Gary Cannon from the Comedy and Magic Club. He brought along 4 of his comedic friends who Las Candalistas favorite comedian Comedian Jesus Trejo, a regular donated their time to provide us with much needed and MC, Gary Cannon at the Hollywood Improv humor. Our guests didn’t leave hungry after the fabulous Italian Buffet provided by Michael’s Tuscany Room. We had a popular photo booth and a raffle.

All in all, it was a very successful evening, and we are looking forward to making this an annual event. Who doesn’t love to laugh?

A Historic Season for Palos Verdes High School Athletic Seaason The 2023-2024 athletic season at Palos Verdes High School will be remembered as one of the most successful in the school’s history. This year, multiple teams and individuals reached the pinnacle of competition, securing state titles and making history for the Sea Kings. From the courts to the fields and the greens, PVHS athletes showcased remarkable dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship.

Girls Tennis: A Perfect Season The PVHS Girls Tennis team delivered an unforgettable season, completing a flawless 27-0 record. Along their journey, they dominated two prestigious tournaments, claimed the Bay League Championship, the CIF Southern Section Championship, and the CIF Southern California Regional Championship. Their incredible run culminated in the California State Championship in the Open Division, the highest level of high school competition.

This victory marks the first state championship in school history for the Girls Tennis program, setting a new standard of excellence.

Girls Volleyball: Third Time’s the Charm After making it to the state championship game for three consecutive seasons, the PVHS Girls Volleyball team finally secured their long-awaited title.

The team kicked off the season at the renowned Iolani Tournament in Hawaii, showcasing their elite talent on a national stage. They powered through the CIF Southern Section playoffs as runners-up before capturing both the CIF Southern California Regional Championship and the California State Championship. This milestone win represents the first state title for Girls Volleyball in PVHS history, cementing their legacy as one of the most formidable teams in the state.

Football: A Historic Run Under the Lights The PVHS Football team embarked on a season to remember, beginning with a trip to Iolani High School in Hawaii. Their journey led to a historic first—hosting a CIF playoff game and championship game on campus under the lights. The Sea

Kings delivered a dominant performance throughout the postseason, capturing the CIF Southern Section Championship, the CIF Southern California Regional Championship, and, ultimately, the California State Championship. This unprecedented victory marks the first state title for PVHS Football, a testament to the hard work and resilience of the players and coaching staff.

No championship football season would be complete without the unwavering support of the school’s performing groups. The PVHS Cheer team, led by Coach Jama Maxfield, and the PVHS Song team, coached by Bria Biggs, played an essential role in rallying school spirit. Additionally, the PVHS Marching Band, under the leadership of Shellie Parkinson, brought energy and enthusiasm to every game, helping to create an electric atmosphere on campus.

Girls Golf: A Star in the Making Freshman golfer Rina Kawasaki made history this season, winning the California State Individual Championship. Her stellar performance, shooting a 69 for 18 holes and clinching victory with a birdie in sudden death, solidified her place among PVHS’s greatest athletes. Rina becomes just the third individual state champion in school history, joining the ranks of Kirsten O’Hara (Track & Field) and Rebecca Mehra (Cross Country). With her talent and composure under pressure, Rina’s future in golf is undeniably bright.

A Season to Remember This year’s accomplishments are a testament to the dedication and perseverance of PVHS athletes, coaches, and supporters. These championship teams and individuals have left an indelible mark on school history, inspiring future generations of Sea Kings to dream big and strive for greatness.

Articles and images we want to save or share today are likely posted, pinned or tweeted on Facebook, Pinterest or some other social media. Before the digital age however, material we wanted to remember or share was often clipped and glued into scrapbooks.

Scrapbooks are a storehouse of history, full of people, places, and events just waiting to be discovered. They often contain the only shred of evidence of some past memory.

The oldest scrapbooks held in the Palos Verdes Library District’s Local History Center were created by the Palos Verdes Project, the initial developer of the Peninsula in the early 1920s. The Project clipped articles, advertisements, photographs and anything related to Palos Verdes from over 130 California publications.

These scrapbooks not only document the early development of the Peninsula but also give us a glimpse of life, plans, and some of the sensational headlines of the day.

For example, clippings from January to September 1926 capture a plan proposed by Frank A. Vanderlip, the president of the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, to build the “Palos Verdes Bowl,” an outdoor musical amphitheater to rival Pasadena’s Hollywood Bowl.

Mrs. J.J. Carter, known as the “Mother of the Hollywood Bowl,” the San Pedro Realty Board and the Woman’s Club of San Pedro investigated the idea.

Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., the landscape architect who laid out the original plans for the Peninsula, was invited to see the proposed sites.

Two canyon locations on Western Avenue were selected. With ample parking and easy access from San Pedro, Long Beach and other parts of Los Angeles, the protected canyons overlooking the ocean were thought to be a perfect location for a 200,000 seat facility.

The Palos Verdes Bowl (also referred to as the San Pedro Bowl and the Vanderlip Bowl) was one of Vanderlip’s plans for “civic betterments” in the port area. The San Pedro Pilot reported it was the

“first step in making San Pedro the center of culture in California.”

Clippings for the Palos Verdes Bowl disappear after September 1926 when Vanderlip, its champion, returned to New York for health reasons.

Starting in June of 1926, clippings also tell the story of Aimee Semple McPherson, the most renowned woman evangelical ministers of that time.

Founder of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel and builder of the Angelus Temple in Los Angeles, McPherson riveted the public’s attention when she mysteriously disappeared from a beach in Venice.

Theories of McPherson’s disappearance ranged from drowning to simply a “daring publicity stunt.”

When McPherson suddenly reappeared in Arizona a month after her disappearance, she had a tale of kidnapping and daring escape from a shack in the middle of the Mexican desert.

McPherson’s story created such excitement that she was met at the train station upon her return to Los Angeles by a crowd of over 30,000. The crowd, the Times reported, was one that “neither presidents nor movie stars had ever elicited.”

Why would the Palos Verdes Project clip the McPherson story? It was the mention of La Venta Inn that memorialized McPherson in the pages of Peninsula history. A few days after her return, McPherson retreated to the solitude of La Venta Inn to recover from her ordeal and escape the throngs of people wanting to see her.

With her family by her side, McPherson spent three days recuperating at the Inn spending time walking along the beach below.

Unlike the fleeting nature of digital media that can disappear in an instant, these physical scrapbooks, fragile themselves, can last for decades preserving our unique local history.

The Point Vicente Lighthouse nears 100 Written by Ji m S h n ee r

The Point Vicente lighthouse has been a fixture on the hill for almost 100 years. The light began service on April 14, 1926. Since then, it has been assisting mariners continuously, even during World War II when it was dimmed significantly by replacing its 1000 watt bulb with one of 25 watts.

The lighthouse is 67 feet tall, but the light is 185 feet above the water as a result of its location on the cliff. The flash pattern of the light is unique to this coast. It is a white light with two quick flashes every 20 seconds which is different from other nearby lighthouses so mariners can easily identify which light they see.

The genesis of the light was in 1913, the same year Frank Vanderlip purchased all 16,000 acres of the Peninsula, when mariners asked the federal government to provide a navigation aid at Point Vicente, westernmost point on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The government acknowledged the need and in 1916 $80,000 was appropriated. When Vanderlip refused to part with the land, the government began condemnation proceedings to seize it under their right of eminent domain. Condemnation was halted and then restarted again in 1919, after which Vanderlip capitulated. Title was transferred in 1921.

The first keeper, George L’Hommedieu, did not get along with his assistants and was replaced in 1930 by Anton Trittinger who remained the keeper until 1945 when Joseph May, the last civilian lighthouse keeper assumed the job. In 1955 May was replaced by a succession of Coast Guard enlisted personnel until the lighthouse was automated in 1973. In 1992 Eric Castro-Bran, a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary was appointed Associate Lighthouse Keeper with responsibility for lighthouse maintenance, and it was he who promoted establishment of the public open house program. In 2001 the light station was used in the motion picture Pearl Harbor and again in 2017 for Dunkirk. Upon Castro-Bran’s departure in 2021, Kip Louttit, a retired Coast Guard captain and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, assumed overall responsibility for the lighthouse with the title of Staff Officer for Navigation Systems, Pt. Vicente Lighthouse.

The three houses originally used as quarters for the lighthouse keepers and their families and subsequently as Coast Guard housing have not been occupied since 2019 because concerns regarding lead paint and asbestos.

The building in which the foghorn equipment was located is now the small display center that sits next to the lighthouse and is open to the public when the grounds are open. There is a helipad on the property, which is used both for Coast Guard rescue training and by water dropping helicopters when they are combating local fires.

The lighthouse itself has not been open to the public since 2019 because of concerns regarding lead paint and asbestos here as well.

The third order French-built Fresnel lens, its light bulb system and its pedestal were retired after 93 years in of continuous use.

In 2019, in about a week, the fixture was disassembled, moved to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center next door and reassembled there where it is beautifully displayed.

The Coast Guard did a study that determined that even in an age of electronic navigation with systems such as GPS and radar, a lighthouse was still needed at Point Vicente since it is a major seacoast aid to navigation, so the Fresnel Lens was replaced by a modern, solar powered, autonomous, LED fixture with a range of 14 miles and same flash pattern of 2 white flashes every 20 seconds.

Upkeep and restoration of historically significant lighthouses and adjacent property is not provided by the Coast Guard whose responsibility is limited to ensuring that the navigation aids are working properly. Like the community group that prevented the demolition of, and funded the restoration of the Point Fermin lighthouse and another group that spear-headed the acquisition of funds to repair Angels Gate lighthouse at the entrance to Los Angeles harbor, a new group is being formed to provide sorely needed work at Point Vicente. This group, which calls itself Friends of the Point Vicente Lighthouse, views their top priorities as the repair of the badly rusted metal roof of the cupola at the top of the lighthouse, the tile roofs on the small buildings that are used to support the public open house program, and remediation of the toxic materials inside the lighthouse itself so that public tours into the lighthouse can be resumed. The open house program at the light station continues on the second Saturday of every month from 10 AM to 3 PM. The visitor will usually find Kip Louttit and his wife Wendy, also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, there as well, welcoming visitors and answering their questions.

Sharmista, Jeff, Chaya, and Nick Holyfield make up a warm and loving family, and their home wouldn’t be the same without their three wonderful pets, Kitty Mama, Lucy, and Alfie. Each one has their own unique personality, quirks, and place in the household, filling their lives with joy, cuddles, and plenty of funny moments.

KM (Kitty Mama) found her way into the family’s hearts in 2020 when Jeff heard tiny meows coming from the garage during a Zoom class. A half-pound, malnourished kitten had wandered in, desperately needing help. The family rushed her to the vet, where she received a life-saving blood transfusion and miraculously survived against the odds. Today, KM is a thriving, affectionate cat who loves to cuddle and nap on Mom’s chest. She has a mischievous side, too, sneaking out through the doggy door to chase lizards in the yard. While she adores attention, she also makes sure Alfie respects her space, giving him a playful swat if he gets too close.

Lucy, the family’s 13-year-old Lab-Greyhound mix, has been a loyal companion since she was a puppy. The runt of the litter, she was the smallest but had the sweetest face, winning over the family instantly. As a young dog, she was incredibly fast, showing off her Greyhound genes in every game of fetch. Though she has slowed down with age, her love for belly rubs, butt scratches, and treats has only grown. Her soulful puppy eyes still melt hearts, and despite her bad breath, she never misses an opportunity to give kisses. She has been a constant source of love for Nick and Chaya, making their childhood full of wonderful memories.

Alfie, a Terrier mix with a bit of Pitbull, joined the family after they lost their beloved dog, Poppy. Lucy was heartbroken without her best friend, and Alfie helped heal that loss in his own playful way. Originally found in Huntington Beach and fostered by a troop of Girl Scouts, Alfie was meant to be a small dog, but he surprised everyone by growing into a 40-pound, stocky pup. He is full of personality—always ready to cuddle, play, and shower KM with (sometimes unwanted) kisses.

He may have graduated from Puppy Academy, but his passion for barking and ignoring commands keeps life entertaining. Spoiled and lovable, he’s always found underfoot in the kitchen, hoping for a snack.

These three pets continue bringing endless laughter, love, and warmth to the Holyfield family. Whether it’s KM snuggling up, Lucy gazing lovingly with her puppy eyes, or Alfie making everyone laugh with his antics, they make every day special.
