How AltaSea is Powering the Blue Economy Revolution

At the edge of the Port of Los Angeles sits AltaSea, a 35-acre ocean innovation campus that is quietly becoming one of the most important centers for climate solutions in the world. At the heart of it all is Jenny Krusoe, Executive Vice President and COO of AltaSea, whose deep connection to the ocean and background in philanthropy and nonprofit leadership has helped bring this ambitious project to life.

Originally from the Seacliff neighborhood of San Francisco, Krusoe grew up on the water above Baker’s Beach, a stretch of coastline not unlike Palos Verdes. “I’ve always had the ocean in my blood,” she says. After attending Harvard and then Stanford Business School, Krusoe spent time working in the film industry before turning her focus toward helping nonprofits become fiscally responsible. That work ultimately led her to the Annenberg Foundation, where she served as a consultant to Executive Director Leonard Aube.

Aube played a pivotal role in the creation of AltaSea. The Port of Los Angeles had brought forward the idea of using port land— state-owned, 35 acres in total—for something transformative. The vision was to build the largest ocean innovation campus in the world dedicated to finding solutions for climate change. Aube understood the significance of the ocean’s role in addressing global environmental challenges and believed in the potential of the sustainable Blue Economy long before it became part of the mainstream conversation. Krusoe recalls, “He was a true visionary who treated everyone with such grace. He knew how to convene, how to build, and how to create coalitions.”

After being brought in as a consultant, Krusoe became the founding executive director of AltaSea nearly ten years ago. “It takes a village to build something of this size,” she says. “We’ve had an amazing team, and I’ve had the honor of hiring two of our CEOs, including Tim McOsker—now our councilmember— and our current CEO, Terry Tamminen, who brings incredible experience from his work with Governor Schwarzenegger, the EPA, and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.”

AltaSea is focused on researching, developing, and scaling ocean-based technologies that can meet the climate challenge.

At the same time, it provides K–12 education and workforce development programs to ensure a future-ready generation is equipped to support and scale these technologies. “We have the solutions,” Krusoe emphasizes. “Now we need to scale them and build the workforce fast enough to make real change.”

Palos Verdes has been a strong supporter of AltaSea from the beginning. Many board members, including Melanie Lundquist and Eric Johnson, as well as key staff members, live in the area. Chadwick School, a vital educational partner located in PV, has an active presence on the AltaSea campus. “They have a

classroom here. One of their teachers is allocated part-time to help with K–5 curriculum development, which is an area we’re growing,” says Krusoe.

“They’ve helped with volunteer programs, curriculum development, and they’re bringing real expertise to the table. This year, we’re honoring Chadwick at our annual Blue Hour gala for all their incredible work with us.”

AltaSea’s work revolves around the idea of the sustainable Blue Economy—a relatively new concept that’s distinct from the traditional ocean economy of shipping and tourism. The Blue Economy focuses on new sectors like aquaculture and sustainable ocean farming, offering carbon-free solutions to global food, energy, and water security challenges. “Aquaculture is really ocean farming,” Krusoe explains. “We have a company here that runs the only federally permitted mussel farm in the country. We also support seaweed farming for use in biofuels and plastic replacement. Seaweed is incredibly versatile.”

One of the major players at AltaSea is Dr. Sergey Nuzhdin, who runs the largest seaweed seed bank in the United States. His development of “sporeless kelp”—a strain that can’t replicate on its own— makes it possible to farm seaweed at scale without it becoming invasive. “That breakthrough allows seaweed to be used safely for biofuels and other high-volume needs,” she says.

Hydrogen technology is another focus area.

“You can’t really electrify large ships,” Krusoe explains. “Batteries would take up too much space. But if you convert to hydrogen, you eliminate emissions.

It’s the only real option for decarbonizing shipping.”

AltaSea currently hosts four carbon capture projects that pull carbon from the ocean and convert it into green hydrogen and other useful byproducts. “The ocean is heating up fast. These kinds of technologies give us a chance to reverse that. We’re not without hope—we just need to act quickly.”

While the science can be complex, Krusoe sees her role as a translator between the lab and the public. “I’m not a scientist,” she says. “So I make them explain things to me until I understand, and then I explain it to others.”

Beyond innovation and research, equity and access are core to AltaSea’s mission. “We prioritize hiring from the local community and from underrepresented communities. It’s important to me that we’re bringing others along with us,” says Krusoe. “I started my career being the only woman in the room. That still happens more than it should. But I keep showing up, and I bring other women with me.”

Recently, Krusoe was named to the Ocean Opportunity Lab’s Global 500 list of top women in ocean leadership. Although the list has since been removed for political reasons, she considers it an honor to have been included alongside women she’s long admired. She was also asked to join the board of the World Ocean Council, an organization that works with ports and shipping industries around the world to implement climate solutions. “It all happened at Climate Week in New York,” she recalls. “The new head of the council 14 | PVMagazine | April | 2025

The Blue Economy is still largely untapped, but its potential is massive, and AltaSea is proving that the answers to some of our biggest challenges might just be found in the deep blue.”

Palos Verdes Resident Robin Aube Connects Legacy, Innovation, and Community

was there and asked if I’d join. Now we’re partnering with them for an event at the upcoming UN Ocean Conference in June.”

When asked what legacy she hopes to leave behind, Krusoe reflects, “If even a dozen kids who came through here become marine biologists, that’s a legacy. I used to say I hoped one day kids would dress up as marine scientists for Halloween—that it would be that mainstream. And I still hope that.”

The challenges are real. As someone leading an organization centered around climate change and committed to diversity, Krusoe acknowledges the pushback. “I got my first death threat of the year last week,” she says candidly. “But I don’t let it stop me anymore. Twenty years ago, it would’ve derailed my day. Now, I just keep going. I think the answer is to be louder—but calmer.”

AltaSea continues to invite the community to learn, explore, and get involved. The next public open house is April 12 and will feature technology demonstrations, food trucks, tours, and opportunities to meet ocean innovators. Most programs are free, and events are held regularly. “We do about six open houses a year, and each one is different,” Krusoe says.

“April’s event will focus on both the green and blue economies, and we’re partnering with organizations from Watts to bring even more voices to the table.”

AltaSea’s annual gala, Blue Hour, returns on September 27, and this year’s theme is “Blue Foods.” It will celebrate culinary sustainability and feature live cooking demonstrations, surprise performances, and honors for both Chadwick School and chef Andrew Zimmern, who produced the PBS documentary Hope in the Water.

“AltaSea is about more than science. It’s about building the future—one that’s sustainable, equitable, and inclusive,” Krusoe says. “And we’re doing it right here, by the ocean.”

Robin Aube’s story is not just one of leadership— Carrying the Vision Forward: Robin Aube of AltaSea Connects Legacy, Innovation, and Community Robin Aube’s story is one of love, legacy, and a long-term vision for the planet. As Director of Advancement at AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, she plays a pivotal role in one of the world’s most ambitious ocean-based research and innovation campuses. But for Robin, AltaSea is far more than a job—it’s deeply personal.

Raised on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Robin’s connection to the South Bay runs deep. A local through and through, she once worked as a lifeguard and snorkeling instructor at Marineland, a beloved former attraction in the community. She later earned her degree in clinical science, with an emphasis in nuclear medicine and radiation physics, from Cal State Dominguez Hills. For 16 years, she worked at Long Beach Memorial before stepping away to raise her family.

Years later, fate would lead her to AltaSea—a place with both personal and professional meaning.

Robin’s late husband, Leonard Aube, was a marine life photographer whose work appeared in National Geographic, and he served as Executive Director of the Annenberg Foundation, who provided the seed funding for what would become AltaSea. But perhaps his most enduring legacy is AltaSea itself.

“He came home one day and said, ‘There’s redundant property at the Port of L.A., and I’m going to make it the greatest oceanographic research center in the world,’” Robin recalls. “We used to come out here and stare at empty warehouses. He was already seeing what could be.”

Today, that vision is thriving.

Robin joined AltaSea nine years ago to help bring Leonard’s dream to life. What began as a personal journey of healing has evolved into a passionate career in environmental stewardship. As Director of Advancement, she leads fundraising, grant writing, and board engagement. Under her guidance—and the leadership of COO Jenny Krusoe—AltaSea is now 86% leased, housing groundbreaking tenants in marine research, renewable energy, and sustainable aquaculture.

“We used to beg people to come here,” Robin says.

“Now they’re begging us.”

AltaSea’s transformation hasn’t been easy. In the early days, Robin couldn’t even include the term “climate change” in grant proposals—it was too politically charged. Today, AltaSea is a national model for forward-thinking environmental innovation.

Carrying the Vision Forward:

A $30 million renovation breathed new life into AltaSea’s historic 1914 warehouses. Once used to house submarines during the two World Wars I and II , they now support cutting-edge marine science and technology.

As a lifelong resident of Palos Verdes and neighboring San Pedro, Robin feels a strong responsibility to connect her community with the work happening just down the hill. Many local residents are involved—as donors, board members, and educational partners—and the momentum continues to grow.

One of AltaSea’s proudest initiatives is the Blue Economy Climate Action Pathways (BECAP) program. With partnerships across 15 Los Angeles-area community colleges—including El Camino, Harbor, West L.A., and Santa Monica College—BECAP provides hands-on training in regenerative ocean farming, marine energy, and climate action certification. Santa Monica College already has two student cohorts enrolled, and a new maritime apprenticeship is launching with El Camino College to address declining maritime industry enrollment.

“We’re training the next generation of ocean innovators,” Robin says. “These are careers that are critical to our future.”

AltaSea also runs a robust high school mentorship program, hosting up to 50 students each summer to work alongside scientists and startups. In addition, 30 college interns are placed annually across the AltaSea tenant network, infusing the ecosystem with fresh ideas and energy.

“This place is about the future,” Robin says.

“Some of the technologies being developed here today won’t be household names for another decade—but they will be.”

AltaSea will host its next Public Open House on April 12, featuring a renewable energy summit, food trucks, exhibitor expo, and opportunities to meet the innovators leading this important work. Robin encourages Peninsula residents to attend—and welcomes speaking opportunities at local schools, community groups, and civic organizations.

Each day, she walks the AltaSea campus surrounded by her husband’s marine photography, prominently displayed throughout the facility.

Leonard’s vision lives on—not just in images, but in action. It’s a powerful reminder that one idea, rooted in passion and backed by community, can ripple outward to change the world.

At the forefront of kelp conservation, Gaines is leading the charge at Kelp Arkc, a dedicated seed bank for seaweed. With kelp forests facing an alarming decline—nearly 80% loss along the West Coast alone—the need for preservation is urgent.

“It’s not just a local issue,” he says. “It’s a global issue.”

Kelp Ark’s mission is to conserve giant kelp and other species by preserving them in a seed bank, serving as a genetic reservoir that allows researchers to protect and eventually restore these vital underwater forests.

“We work closely with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife,” Gaines explains. “They allow us to collect these samples because they recognize how critical this work is.”

Natural disasters have become a growing threat to marine ecosystems. Runoff from fires in the Palisades, Malibu, and Topanga Canyon has significantly impacted water quality in Santa Monica Bay. “The rainy season after a fire is like a one-two punch for the ocean,” Gaines notes. “All that debris ends up in the water— along with heavy metals and other contaminants. The runoff can block sunlight, and since these are photosynthetic organisms, they struggle to survive.”

Kelp Ark not only serves as a repository but also plays a key role in scientific research. “Our seed bank is unique because we don’t just isolate kelp genetics—we also preserve the microbes that live with them,” says Gaines. “These bacteria influence growth and resilience to disease, so we’re building a true genetic database of both the kelp and its associated microbes.”

AltaSea, where Kelp Ark is based, is a hub of ocean innovation, working with leading research institutions on initiatives such as sustainable marine energy and carbon capture technologies.

“We’re building a 3,500-square-foot laboratory facility here at AltaSea,” says Gaines. “By the end of the year, we hope to be in our new space, which will allow us to expand our work.”

Despite the ongoing threats, there are signs of hope. Some kelp forests, including those off the Palisades, have shown resilience following previous warming events.

“We saw significant damage in 2016, but restoration efforts helped bring them back,” Gaines says. “Now, with the runoff from recent fires, we’ll need to monitor the long-term impacts—but we’re optimistic.”

MMCC has revamped its visitor experience with interactive exhibits, including a hands-on play area where kids can role-play as veterinarians. MMCC rescues more marine mammals per mile than any other facility in Los Angeles County, covering a 75-mile stretch of coastline. The center cares for sick, injured, and orphaned animals, offering visitors a chance to see rehabilitation in action. During pup season (January to June), MMCC cares for vulnerable sea lion pups, along with elephant and harbor seals.

“It’s truly a ‘puppalooza’ of marine mammals,” says Warner. Visitors can watch these animals recover under the expert care of the veterinary team, with educational signage explaining the rehabilitation process and how they can help protect marine life. Today, Warner channels that passion into his work at MMCC. Under his leadership, MMCC’s efforts have expanded, emphasizing both the direct care of marine mammals and the vital role of public education in ocean conservation.

Before joining MMCC in 2023, Warner made a significant impact at The Marine Mammal Center in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he served as Chief Development & Communications Officer and Interim Program Officer. Throughout his career, he has raised funds and advocated for various nonprofit causes. Warner holds a B.A. from the University of San Francisco and an MPA from San Francisco State University.

McKay Smith

Welcome to the first installment of our occasional series exploring the vibrant, bustling Palos Verdes Farmers Market. Nestled in the heart of the Peninsula, the market has become a staple for local residents seeking fresh, organic produce and artisanal goods. Today, we dive into the story behind one of the market’s most beloved vendors: McKay Smith of Smith Farms, whose sweet, organic strawberries have earned a loyal following.

Smith’s story is rooted deep in the soil of California’s farming tradition. “My dad was a farmer, so I’m the third generation in this business,” he shares with a proud smile. His commitment to organic farming has made Smith Farms a standout at farmers’ markets throughout Southern California. Smith, having been selling at the Palos Verdes Farmers Market for over 30 years, was one of the first certified organic farmers in the state.

“We’ve been coming to Palos Verdes for a long time, and I just love it up here,” says Smith. “It used to be in the shopping center, and now we’re here at the school. It’s a wonderful community. The people are just amazing. They really support the market.” So much so that Smith’s strawberries, the true star of the show, usually sell out within the first hour of the market opening. “Everyone comes asking for the strawberries and I have to say we are all out which I guess is a good problem to have,” he laughs.

Every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Palos Verdes Farmers Market attracts around 5,000 shoppers with 15 to 20 farmers and 35 to 40 total vendors. Market manager Brian Weiss says, “We have about 20 farmers, and then non-ag vendors with offerings like bread, salsa, and fish. It’s a great mix of local businesses coming together, and people love it.”

In addition to strawberries, Smith Farms also offers a range of seasonal produce, including brussel sprouts, cabbage, asparagus, and artichokes, grown at multiple locations across Orange County. Smith Farms employs a team of more than 20 people, many of whom have been with Smith for decades, including long-time employee Federico, who has been working with the farm since 1980. Smith’s three daughters may not be involved in farming, as they’ve all chosen careers in the medical field, but he isn’t giving up hope. “I’m working on the sons-in-law,” he laughs.

For Smith, it’s about more than just business, it’s about legacy, community, and doing something meaningful. “I just really enjoy the people,” he says, “and I’m so grateful for the support. Palos Verdes is a community that values fresh, local, and organic produce, and I love being part of that.”

Strawberry Arugula Salad As part of our spotlight on local farmers at the PV Farmers Market, we’re excited to share some of our favorite recipes from the PV Magazine team that highlight fresh, seasonally appropriate ingredients.

Our first recipe comes from writer Melani Edelstein, and it’s a simple yet delicious salad that her family loves. This Strawberry Arugula Salad is the perfect way to enjoy the vibrant flavors of spring.

Ingredients:

4 cups fresh arugula 1½ cups strawberries, hulled and sliced ½ cup crumbled feta cheese ¼ cup nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, or pecans), toasted 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, for drizzling) 1-2 tablespoons balsamic glaze or vinaigrette dressing Salt and pepper to taste Directions:

1. In a large bowl, lightly toss together arugula, strawberries, nuts, and feta.

2. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper to your taste.

3. Drizzle with your preferred dressing, serve and enjoy!

Palos Verdes Peninsula High “Walk for Life” Raises $36,000 for Cancer Support and Research Palos Verdes Peninsula High School’s (PVPHS) annual “Walk for Life” on Feb. 28 brought together over 1,000 students, faculty, and community members, raising $36,000 for Cancer Support Community South Bay and the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. The walk started on campus and ended at Highridge Park, following a heartfelt opening ceremony.

PVPHS Principal Dr. Brent Kuykendall, whose mother is undergoing chemotherapy, emphasized the importance of the walk for those affected by cancer. ASB President Renata Lopez shared her experience coping with grief since the loss of her mother to cancer, while former school resource officer David Rozas spoke about his wife’s battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

A floral tribute honored those affected by cancer in the school community.

Checks of $18,000 were presented to both organizations. Cancer Support Community CEO Cancer Support Community CEO Jillian Van Leuven expressed gratitude, calling the donation more than just financial support, it represents hope, strength, and solidarity for those facing cancer.

The event concluded with students and staff chanting “hope” as purple powder filled the air, symbolizing unity and Panther pride in the fight against cancer.

CSC Together We Walk Event

Cancer Support Community South Bay’s inaugural “Together We Walk” event, held on March 9, 2025, in Long Beach, raised over $52,000 to fund the organization’s free support services and programs for cancer patients and their families. More than 300 participants took part in the 5K course to honor the legacy of Judith Opdahl, the organization’s longtime executive director and CEO. The event featured a lively expo with local businesses and organizations, offering health resources, food and beverages, and opportunities to connect with the community. Canine companions joined the walk, adding extra enthusiasm to the day. Executive Director and CEO Jillian Van Leuven expressed gratitude, saying, “Whether you are walking in honor of a loved one, running in celebration of survivorship, or simply showing your support, you are making a difference. Because of you, hope continues.”

Peninsula Heritage Spring Gala Gives Back

Peninsula Heritage School’s annual spring GALA traditionally raises funds for improvements at the school. However, proceeds from the recent “Heritage Michelle and Jason Cobb with Hoedown” at H.T. Grill in Redondo Beach will not be David and Roni Glassman utilized by Peninsula Heritage School. Instead, the funds will be donated to five independent schools that were completely burned in the recent wildfires.

Paddle Out Plastic Fighting the Rising Tide of Plastic Pollution One Paddle at a Time Wri tte n by M e l a n i M o ro s e Ed e l s te i n

Every year, on Earth Day, people in Palos Verdes and around the world reflect on the state of our environment, pledging to take actions that help protect our planet. For Eva Cicoria and her nonprofit Paddle Out Plastic, this reflection is an everyday commitment. Since founding the 501c3 organization in June 2019, Cicoria has been leading a grassroots movement aimed at addressing one of the most urgent threats facing our oceans: plastic pollution.

“The fight against plastic pollution is far from over,” says Cicoria. “But the more we show up, the more we bring attention to this crisis, the closer we get to real change.” Paddle Out Plastic’s mission is to engage directly with the waters of Southern California, where the problem is particularly acute, and tackle the issue head-on. They retrieve trash from the water, most of it single-use plastics, raising awareness of the sheer scale of the problem, while working to educate the public and policymakers.

Paddle Out Plastic’s core strategy is to create a tangible connection between local communities and the environment. Their weekly paddles are an open invitation for individuals to join them on the

water and see the pollution firsthand. “We believe the more people who are involved, the more it amplifies our collective impact,” says Cicoria.

While the group is committed to cleaning the water, their work extends well beyond paddleboards and kayaks. Cicoria and her team engage with lawmakers to make them aware of the issues with the hope this will lead to legislation that effectively reduces plastic waste and encourages better waste management strategies. They’ve seen recent victories, including a statewide ban on plastic bags and a ban on polystyrene foam, which officially took effect this year in California.

Cicoria remains cautiously optimistic, pointing to reports that suggest pressure from the plastic industry could derail the full implementation of these laws. “The fight doesn’t stop with one victory,” she says. “We must stay vigilant and push for better enforcement and expansion of these laws.”

In addition to their policy work, Paddle Out Plastic also places a strong emphasis on community engagement. The group holds regular paddles, inviting residents with their own standup paddleboards and kayaks to participate.

Since its launch, Paddle Out Plastic has removed over 330,000 pieces of plastic from the water. Here’s a breakdown of what they’ve pulled out:

Paddle Out Plastic has seen a growing number of dedicated paddlers, many of whom, like Cicoria’s husband, Ken Swenson, have become regular participants. “Ken retired recently, so he’s been even more involved, paddling weekly and helping out with everything from sorting to organizing,” Cicoria shares.

Laura and Jeff Raab, Peninsula residents who discovered Paddle Out Plastic during the pandemic, also contribute regularly. “They’ve been so consistent in joining us week after week, and Laura even helps us with data collection,” Cicoria adds. “Their involvement is such a vital part of what makes this work.”

Paddle Out Plastic is focused not just on paddling and clean-up, but on shifting the cultural mindset around plastic waste. “We’ve been setting up booths at local events, talking to people about what we’re seeing out there and what they can do to help,” Cicoria explains. “We want to increase our outreach in 2025 and beyond.”

With legislative wins and growing community involvement, the movement is building momentum. Still, there’s much work to do. “As we continue our policy work and outreach, we’re seeing more people understand that they can make a difference,” Cicoria says. “That’s the power of collective action. We can change the course of this pollution problem if we all come together.”

Paddle Out Plastic welcomes anyone with paddling experience to get involved. Paddlers should bring their own kayaks or standup paddleboards and join the weekly paddles. The Plastic Pollution Crisis: By the Numbers Plastic pollution is one of the most pervasive environmental issues of our time. The facts speak for themselves: • 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean every year.

• By 2050, it’s estimated that there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean (by weight).

• Over 40% of all plastic produced is used for packaging, most of which is single-use.

• Every minute, 1 million plastic bottles are sold around the world.

• The average plastic bag is used for just 12 minutes but takes over 400 years to decompose.

The statistics are a harsh reminder of the urgency needed to confront plastic pollution. It’s time for collective action and groups like Paddle Out Plastic are showing us how small, consistent efforts can lead to significant change.

In the quiet whisper of nature’s beauty, Palos Verdes native Jill Sanders captures the soul of the landscape through her lens, blending art, nature, and personal expression in every shot. A classically trained fine art landscape photographer, Sanders’ work reflects the power of stillness and the transformative influence of the natural world.

Born and raised on the Peninsula, Sanders’ connection to the region is rooted in both family history and a deep love for the landscapes that shaped her creative journey. For Sanders, photography is more than an art form—it’s a lifeline, offering peace and purpose in an ever-changing world. “I’m an artist, and I’m totally a purist,” she says. “The whole point of my photography is to capture what the earth so generously provides us.

I don’t want to alter that.”

Her roots in Palos Verdes run deep. Her grandfather, a builder, constructed her family home, and her mother also attended PV High. “I’m local, about as local as you can get,” Sanders reflects.

Her childhood, spent primarily with her grandmother and great-grandmother, nurtured her creative spirit. “Photography became a coping mechanism for me,” she shares. “It was my way of processing the world, of coping with everything.

I’ve been a photographer forever.”

Her passion for art started early. “I remember in kindergarten, I did a drawing and the teacher called my grandmother to tell her I was tracing it, but I wasn’t,” Sanders recalls. “I was just drawing it myself.” This drive to create never faded. She refined her skills at Chadwick School, where her love for visual storytelling grew. “Arts will never abandon you,” she says. “It’s a constant companion, even when the world feels uncertain.”

For Sanders, photography is a calling. “I’m not hiding from the world behind my camera, but it’s where I’m most comfortable,” she explains. “The camera creates a focal point for me, and I often find peace in the moments behind the lens.”

This connection to her work is evident in her upcoming project: a book titled Stillness. The idea emerged during a period of personal reflection, following medical challenges and the isolation of the COVID-19 lockdown. “I realized that to find meaning in life, I had to return to what made me happy. And that was always being immersed in nature,” Sanders reflects. The book will feature her fine art landscape photography, each image

capturing moments of stillness, inviting viewers to reconnect with their inner peace. “It’s about helping people see the world around them and truly notice the beauty that’s right in front of them,” she says.

Sanders hopes the book will remind people of their significance in the grand tapestry of life.

“It’s about stopping, looking around, and realizing how connected we are to this earth,” she says thoughtfully.

Sanders’ personal and professional path is shaped by her family. She and her husband, Graham, reside in Palos Verdes, where they cherish any time they can get with their two grown daughters, Finn and Rebecca, who have each built independent lives. Embracing this new chapter, Sanders continues to stay deeply engaged with her community, despite the demands of her photography career.

Sanders’ deep connection to the area is evident from her decade-long success running a gallery in the Hollywood Riviera, which closed after the building was sold. “I’d love to open another gallery one day,” she says, “but it has to be perfect.”

Today, Sanders is always creating, capturing everything from Maui’s whales to Death Valley’s shifting weather patterns. “It’s fun, it’s life,” she says with a smile in her voice. “The seasons offer different palettes, whether it’s snowstorms or monsoon season. I’m always searching for what’s next, what’s blooming.”

As she continues to explore new landscapes, Sanders remains committed to her craft. “I have to keep moving forward,” she says. “That’s what I do. I’m always creating.” Through her lens, she invites us to pause, breathe, and appreciate the simple yet profound beauty of the world, offering moments of stillness and peace in today’s fast-paced world.

Recently, Sanders was the lead photographer for the Palos Verdes Golf Course 100 Years Centennial Golf Club book. Contributing to the book by utlilzing her love of photography in conjunction with her family’s deep roots near the Course and being a Club member was a wonderful opportunity for Sanders to give back to the community she loves.
