eateries, West Palm’s Northwood Village is making a comeback. By AMY WOODS Palms West Monthly
NORTHWOOD VILLAGE — Could Northwood Village be the next SoHo? A group of gallery owners thinks so. To prove it, they joined forces and formed ArtX, a consortium of 11 studios in the West Palm Beach neighborhood whose goal is to make the area a historic hub for arts and culture. “We want Northwood to be the center of art in West Palm Beach,” said graphic designer Jonathon Ortiz-Smykla, who opened OSGS on Northwood Road one year ago. “West Palm Beach doesn’t have something, and we want to provide that something.” One of the first things ArtX did was plan a monthly art walk modeled after the guided tours that take place in the trendy Miami district of Wynwood. The first walk in October attracted 60 participants – everyone from the casual observer to the
art aficionado. “That was the basis for the art walk, for them to sign up and see what’s here,” Ortiz-Smykla said. “There’s a misconception about what’s here.” Northwood Village has had a reputation as a lessthan-desirable place to go to, much less hang out in, village spokeswoman Ilene Adams said. “A lot of people are afraid of going to Northwood,” Adams said. “With the art walk, people will feel more comfortable because a docent will be there to take them around.” The one-hour tours will be offered the second Saturday of the month and will begin at the nonprofit Center for Creative Education on 24th Street. A guide gathers the group together, gives them an overview of Northwood Village and leads them up and
down the lively streets, making stops in each participating gallery. Guests can sip wine and enjoy appetizers while gallerists answer questions and artists present demonstrations. Those who attend the walk are offered discounts at the growing number of hip restaurants in the area, including just-opened Garage VV, the newest joint in the Little Moir family of eateries, and soon-tobe-relocated Aleyda’s, the Okeechobee Boulevard landmark known for its Mexican fare and exotic live birds. “Once the restaurants start coming, which they’re doing now, I think that’s a really good sign,” Adams said. “I think they’re really seeing the opportunity now that it’s becoming a vibrant arts community.” While some parts of the vil-
