I am very grateful for the committed and generous members of our school community who make Palmer Trinity a personal and philanthropic priority. This includes parents, students, Alumni, grandparents, Alumni parents, board members and friends of the school. Like most other non-profit institutions, independent schools cannot cover the cost of the annual operating budget or capital projects with tuition alone. This underscores the importance of each and every gift. Our excellence depends on your generosity.
Last year, we celebrated the extraordinary achievements of the members of the Class of 2012, the academic excellence of the student body, faculty, and the profound dedication of our Board of Trustees in their resolute efforts to advocate for the continued growth of our South Campus.
As the father of a sixth grader, I spent many nights listening to my daughter share the challenges and pleasures of middle school life. I was able to see the school through different lenses and experience Palmer Trinity in a new way. I listened to her talk about her classes, teachers, friends, sports, and activities.
At Palmer Trinity School, the small classes, individual attention, extraordinary teachers, and other resources that make our children’s daily experiences so satisfying, require substantial funding. I am proud that we have been able to provide in this way for our students. I am equally proud of the way our community—in every program—combines fiscal prudence and creativity to make the most of every budgeted dollar.
For these reasons, I greatly appreciate your individual gifts to the Annual Fund and other special projects. I thank you for leading the way, with your philanthropy and endless hours of volunteerism, to ensure the school’s bright future. In these ways, you have affirmed your belief in, and commitment to, our beloved School.
We still have so much yet to accomplish, but I know Palmer Trinity School will continue to succeed. I look forward to the success of this year’s Annual Fund and other capital project opportunities, and I pray you continue to give generously, each and every year.
I will leave you with an old Quaker saying, “Attitudes are caught, not taught.” Our children want to be like the people they love, and they learn from seeing us in acts of service to others. Share your philanthropy as a family, and remember to hug your children often, and tell them you love them, for the days are long, but the years are short.
With heartfelt appreciation,
se A n MUR ph Y Head of School
To all parents, Alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, past board members, and friends of the Palmer Trinity School community:
As Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the past three years and a parent of a Palmer Trinity graduate, I want to thank you for your philanthropic support to Palmer Trinity during the 2011-2012 academic year. I believe there is no other place on earth quite as special and unique as Palmer Trinity School.
Emphasizing the importance of both intellectual achievement and deep spiritual values, at Palmer Trinity School we educate the whole person—not just from the academic perspective. Furthermore, the school strives to teach our kids to become individuals who develop a collaborative “we” frame of reference, rather than a competitive “me.” We are educating and training our students to become thoughtful and responsible citizens of the world, because we know it will make our world a better place.
As we continue our mission of inspiring students to seek enlightenment and lead lives of honor, integrity, and social responsibility, we know that we could not have made it this far without the support of generous people like you. It is because of your generosity that Palmer Trinity School is able to offer more and more children the same exceptional education that your children enjoy, and that my son, Patrick ‘10, enjoyed—an education that distinguishes our children as independent and critical thinkers and leaders in our society.
On behalf of Palmer Trinity School and the Board of Trustees, thank you for choosing PTS and thank you for your loyal financial support to our school. I look forward to celebrating many accomplishments together as we continue on this important path.
Sincerely,
Joseph J. K A lb A c, e sq U i R e Chairman of the Board
Since its establishment in 1972, nearly all of the school’s resources have been employed to its mission of educating students. Today, of the school’s annual expenditures of $17 million, approximately 77% supports the student’s education in the form of faculty and staff compensation, programs and needbased financial aid. The remaining 23% of the school’s expenditures include campus improvements, maintenance, our cutting edge 1:1 laptop mobile technology platform, and debt service of our tax-free Miami-Dade County industrial development bond.
In 2007, the school embarked on an ambitious campaign to raise $10 million and establish an endowment fund to ensure its long term viability in delivering a premium education to a diverse and vibrant community. The School contracted Commonfund to manage its investment, said funds used in part as collateral towards the school’s IDA bonds, but in the near future returns will be used to supplement the schools growing needs and enhanced educational programs and faculty development.
Commonfund is one of the leading investment firms for colleges, universities and secondary schools, foundations and other philanthropic and tax-exempt organizations. Founded in 1971 as a nonprofit, membership organization with a grant from the Ford Foundation, today Commonfund manages over $25 billion for more than 1,500 institutions. The graphic to the right depicts the distribution of assets by asset category from which the school benefits through the firm’s access to some of the world’s best managers and funds. For information on the firm, visit www.commonfund.org
As of September 30, 2012, our school has over $5 million in its Endowment managed by Commonfund, and another $3 million in pledges. The school relies on the generous donations of alumni, parents, grandparents, trustees and other friends of the School who contribute to the Annual Fund and Endowment to benefit all who attend Palmer Trinity School. In order to maintain the highest educational standards, the school invests in recruiting and retaining highly qualified motivated faculty and ongoing professional development, small class sizes and an excellent 1:15 ratio of teachers to students. These practices are not only highly effective; they are also fundamental to the success of the school and must be continued.
The role of the Endowment fund is to relieve in part the pressure placed on tuition and fees and is critical in maintaining the school’s position as a leader in higher education and providing a safe and nurturing environment. The investment strategy for the school’s Endowment is designed to protect
each gift’s long-term value against inflation or downturns in the economy via diversification among a variety of asset classes so as to provide a balance that will enhance total real return while avoiding undue risk concentration in any single asset class or investment category. Through reinvestment of earnings, sound investment policies and the receipt of new gifts, the Endowment has steadily grown from $200,000 to over $5 million in just 5 years to the benefit of future generations of Palmer Trinity School scholars and leaders contributing to business and our community.
The school relies mostly on enrollment, with tuition and fees the primary source of income. The Annual Fund contributes to the school’s operating budget and supports the outstanding educational experience at Palmer Trinity. Charitable giving has a tremendous impact on the financial stability of the school, greatly increasing its ability to offer enhanced educational opportunities for all students. Continued philanthropic giving is necessary for the school to decrease its reliance on tuition and fees as a primary source of income.
Due in part to compliance with IDA bond requirements, the school contracts Verdeja De Armas CPA firm to perform an annual audit of the financials and operations along with a review of our internal controls and preparation of tax returns. For over 35 years, the firm has specialized in the education market with over 33 clients in South Florida, including many of our peers—providing a resource for benchmarks and best practices.
The Finance, Audit and Investment Committee is made up of a group of dedicated parents and alumni parents with a vested interest in the continued success of the school. With varied nationalities and backgrounds that include banking, investment, communication, education, business and entrepreneurs—all contribute their expertise, time and passion for the school and its mission. The committee is chaired by Charles Klenk and includes Ricardo Albarran, Michael Baiamonte, Paula Brockway, Frank Corbishley, Jim Davidson, Bill Morrison, Alejandro Rodriguez and Jo-Ann Titley.
Sincerely,
José c h A o CPA/MBA/CFO
The class of 2012 was one of our strongest ever, with 10% headed to the eight Ivy League schools. We have three students attending Harvard this fall. As is tradition, the majority are heading to universities in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. They are also scattered across the United States, Canada, and Europe at some of the world’s best universities. Four of our students were recognized by the Knight Foundation with Silver Knight awards and honorable mentions. Silver Knight is the highest recognition a high school senior can receive in Miami-Dade County. Six of our students will play competitive athletics at their respective universities. Paulina Prieto was one of the most sought after volleyball players in the country and will play at perennial national champion Penn State this fall. This class also won millions of dollars of scholarship money. I know our students will make a tremendous impact at their universities.
I believe our students do so well at the university level because Palmer Trinity is truly a global school where students are able to find their passion under the guidance of our gifted faculty and staff. Our students are articulate, openminded, well-read, critical thinkers, and they strive to make a difference. Our largest clubs are community service organizations. We have students building homes in Nicaragua several times a year, doing medical mission trips in Peru and Colombia, working in orphanages in Honduras, and volunteering with local schools as tutors and mentors. Community service is not a requirement at our school; students do it because they see a need. Our global education programs earned Palmer Trinity a Global Classroom Award last year. We were one of only two schools in the nation that were bestowed with this prestigious honor. Our study away programs in Australia, Spain, France, Bahamas, and New York City are thriving. Last year some of our students participated in a semester-long web class with four other schools from the U.S. and Roberts College in Istanbul, Turkey on the impact of Israel in Middle East politics
Palmer Trinity not only offers an outstanding education, but provides amazing opportunities for students. Ciara Michel ‘03 became Palmer Trinity’s first Olympian, participating in the London games in volleyball, Dexter Carr ‘09, is in his first Broadway musical, which opened this month, and Patrick Murphy ‘01 won the seat in the US House of Representatives. These alumni attribute the foundation of their successes and dreams to Palmer Trinity.
Palmer Trinity is a school for students who have a passion for learning, have an innate desire to be of service to others, and who want to make a difference in their community. These are the hallmarks of a great Episcopal School. In addition, Palmer Trinity draws families who want a true global perspective with their child’s education, not just a school who uses “global” as a marketing tagline. It is a unique place among Miami’s independent schools.
Warmest regards,
dA nn Y Re Y nolds Director of Admission, College Counseling, and Study Away
We are very pleased to share with you the success of our 2011-2012 development efforts. Thanks to overall philanthropic contributions, we raised $955,000 for the students, faculty, and staff at Palmer Trinity School. As an educational institution, this school continues to be committed to enriching every aspect of our students’ daily school experience.
Palmer Trinity School students are a composite of many virtues—all of which make them unique and special individuals. Last year’s incoming class of students reflected a competitive, diverse pool of qualified applicants from 40 elementary schools. As members of the Palmer Trinity School community, these students—and yours—participated in many service projects, took advantage of our Sustainability at PTS program, traveled and served locally and abroad, and made giant strides in their education. This Annual Report recognizes all those who gave generously last year, and allows all of us at PTS an opportunity to say thank you.
In 2011-2012, the Palmer Trinity School community—including Alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends—supported the school on multiple fronts, at impressive levels; advancing the School’s mission through their personal contributions of time and financial resources. The collective efforts of many helped raise $537,980 for the Annual Fund—an amount that exceeded our $500,000 goal—and a number that reflects a 75% overall parent participation rate, 98% faculty and staff participation, and 100% Board participation. This is a tremendous accomplishment, one that you should be proud to know will contribute greatly to Palmer Trinity now and in the future.
Most notably, your support made it possible for us to complete three major construction projects that we began last year:
• The Middle School Elevator Project: The new ADA-compliant elevator continues our goal of full accessibility on our campus.
• The Falcon’s Nest Solar Power System: The popular snack and service bar on campus is now run entirely on solar power with mobile recharging stations and for educational purposes, a monitor for tracking energy consumption.
• The South Campus Front Wall Façade: The beautifully designed front entrance wall was built with coral rock and iron work.
As a result of your support, our students—both those who are here today, and those who will be here in the years to come—will enjoy the benefits of an unparalleled education. Because of your generosity, we can give these students the chance to make their dreams come true.
Thank you for helping to provide the best facilities and educational environment to our talented community of students, faculty and staff. Your support makes a difference. As we look towards the future, we invite you to continue to be an active partner and financial supporter in our school’s evolution and growth.
Thank you,
sU z A nne Gottlieb cA lle JA Director of Advancement
As one of the top private schools in florida, our students have the necessary tools to excel in their choices for academic discovery, personal growth, and community service. philanthropy and voluntarism demonstrate your strong belief in the mission of palmer trinity school. Your gift, whatever its size or purpose, adds great value to the school and to the young people whose lives it impacts. because palmer trinity school is a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt non-profit organization, donors can take full advantage of income, capital gifts, and estate tax deductions.
You may elect to make your gift without any restrictions, enabling the school to use it where it can achieve the greatest impact. Unrestricted gifts represent the greatest utility to the school, as they allow the head of school and the board of trustees to respond to unanticipated needs and opportunities throughout the year.
There are many ways to fulfill your charitable intentions and provide immediate and future benefits to the school and your family. it is important that donors are aware of options so that each family can make a gift with the type of asset most suited to respective financial situations. A well-structured plan may allow you to be even more generous that you thought possible. The giving options below enable you to enhance your giving capability by tailoring a gift to your unique financial and estate circumstances, but we encourage you to work with your financial advisor on appropriate gifts for your family.
ca SH gi F t S: Most donors make outright cash contributions. The School gratefully accepts cash gifts, including checks and the major credit cards, VISA, American Express, Discover, and MasterCard. A cash gift entitles the donor to an income tax deduction in the year of the gift.
S ecuritie S: Appreciated securities are the best form of assets to use in making a charitable gift. An outright gift of appreciated securities entitles the donor to an income tax deduction for the fair market value of the securities and, in the case of securities which have been held for more than 18 months, the avoidance of capital gains tax.
B e Q ue S t: A donor may include a bequest to the School in a donor’s will. Bequests may be for a specified amount, a percentage of the donor’s estate, or even a residual portion. Contributions made in this way will reduce your taxable estate.
income intere S t gi F t S: Through an income interest gift, a donor may contribute the income for an asset while retaining ownership of that asset. In this case, the School receives income for a designated period of years, after which the asset and any subsequent income returns to the donor, or another designated beneficiary. This form offers both immediate and future tax advantages.
real e S tate : A donor may contribute various types of real property or a fractional interest in property to the School. Such real estate may be a personal or vacation home, farm, commercial building, or undeveloped property. For a personal residence, including a vacation home, the donor may make a gift of property and reserve the right to occupy it for his or her life and for the life of a spouse. Real estate gifts offer the donor various tax benefits.
tangi B le per S onal property : If the donor gives a tangible asset, such as a work of art, which has appreciated in value, and if the asset is used by the School in its educational program, the donor receives a charitable deduction equal to the asset’s full fair market value. If the asset is not used by the School, the donor’s charitable deduction is limited to his or her cost basis.
li F e in S urance : A donor may contribute an existing life insurance policy which is no longer needed or may designate the School the owner and beneficiary of a new policy. In either case, the value of the existing policy (or the donor’s investment, if less) or annual premiums/payments are fully deductible as charitable contributions.
remain D er gi F t: Through the remainder gift, a donor may contribute assets, such as securities or real estate, to the School and retain for life the income from those assets. A remainder gift permits the donor to take an income tax deduction for the charitable portion of the value of the gift. Furthermore, if the gift is in the form of appreciated securities or real estate, the donor may not pay capital gains tax on the appreciation.
Please contact your financial advisor to determine tax benefits for your family.
