hi¯·«× f Las Vegas
Las Vegas (Spanish for "The Meadows") was founded in 1905. The San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake railroad arrived in the city, connecting it with the Pacific and the country's main rail networks. The completion of the railroad made Las Vegas an essential stop for travelers, and the town began to grow rapidly.
In 1931 construction began on the massive Boulder Dam (later renamed the Hoover Dam), drawing thousands of workers to a site just east of the city. It was one of the largest engineering projects in U.S history, and it put Las Vegas on the map as a destination for tourists and workers alike. Casinos and showgirl venues opened up on Fremont Street, the town's sole paved road, to attract the project’s workers.
At the close of the 20th century, Vegas was the most populated American city founded within that century. Population growth has accelerated since the 1960's. Between 1990 and 2000 the population nearly doubled.
U.S senators Thomas Kern and William Clark were two of the most critical figures in Las Vegas' early history. Clark began developing another railroad, eventually leading to the auctioning off of the land in what is now the downtown area. The city was incorporated in 1911, with Peter Buol serving as its first mayor.

The small town of 5,000 grew to 25,000 by the time the dam was completed in 1935. Since most of these newcomers were single working men, the city became known for its many brothels and gambling establishments.
Today, Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city, commonly referred to as 'The Entertainment Capital of the World', known primarily for its dining, gambling, shopping, fine entertainment and night life. The Las Vegas Valley as a whole serves as the and leading financial, commercial cultural center for Nevada.

transportation information

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE
Students and active duty personnel (including dependents) do not need to register their vehicles or acquire a new license in Nevada as long as the individual is not employed in the state. Vehicles must be currently registered with the home state and have valid insurance and a driver's license. Out-of-state drivers and vehicle registrations can be used by new residents for up to 30 days or until the prior documents expire, whichever comes first. At any time during that 30-day period, they may be turned in to the DMV for Nevada documents.
Nevada law requires motorists to notify the DMV of a change of address within 30 days of moving. Keeping your address current is important so renewal notices and other communications can be sent to you in the mail.
MONORAIL
From one end of the Strip to the other, visitors can glide above the traffic at speeds of up to 50 mph. The system operates on a 4-mile route that runs from the Sahara Hotel to the MGM Grand. Whether you are in town for business or pleasure, the monorail offers fast, fun, and convenient transportation between Las Vegas Strip hotels.

ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT
Accountability Reports, furnished each spring to parents, include statistics about a school's performance as well as achievements, highlights, awards, goals, and technology use. These reports are available online on the Clark County School District's website at www.ccsd.net under the "Schools" link, then "School Accountability Reports."
AGE REQUIREMENTS
Nevada law requires school attendance between the ages of 7 and 18. Kindergarten is part of the regular school program. A child must be five years old on or before September 30 to attend kindergarten and must be six years old on or before September 30 to enter first grade. State law also requires that a child must attend a state-approved kindergarten program or take a developmental assessment test to enter first grade.
BUS SERVICES
Students who live more than 2 miles from their zoned schools are eligible for bus transportation. Those who qualify must complete an application form requesting the service. Forms are available throughout the Clark County School District. Bus times and route schedules can be obtained through your child's school or at www.ccsd.net/transportation
Students with zone variances will not be bused. Parents are responsible for providing transportation to and from school.
ENROLLMENT
In order to enroll students, proof of immunizations must be provided before classes begin.
Parents enrolling their children in a District school for the first time must have identification, the child's Social Security number, and two forms of proof of address. Proof of a child's identity can be the original birth certificate or passport. Identification must be an original — no copies are accepted.
The required proof of address can be a recent utility bill, rental receipt, residential lease agreement, or sales contract. Telephone bills, cable bills, and driver’s licenses are not accepted as proof of address.
All students transferring from another school district must provide transcripts or report cards from the previous school.
MEALS AT SCHOOL
All schools give students the opportunity to purchase breakfast and hot lunches.
• Elementary Schools: Free breakfast and $2.00 for lunch
• Middle & High Schools: Free breakfast and $3.25 for lunch
For students in kindergarten through 8th grade, applications for free or reduced-price meals can be found at the school’s office or cafeteria.

IMMUNIZATIONS
Nevada law requires that children in kindergarten through grade 12 be current with their immunizations before they are allowed to enter school. Parents or guardians must bring immunization records when registering their child.
A child will not be allowed to attend school without documentation of immunizations. Exceptions are permitted for religious objections, which require a letter from the parent or guardian stating the objection, or for medical conditions, which require a letter from a health care provider.
For the new school year, students must be up to date with all required immunizations. Students entering 7th grade must also have the recently mandated Tdap vaccine, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough).
Students new to Nevada are required to have immunizations for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and varicella (chickenpox). If a child has had chickenpox, the parent or guardian must sign a “Verification of Disease” form, available at each school. A second dose of MMR is required for all kindergarten and first-grade students.
Contact the Southern Nevada Health District at 759-1000 for more information.
magnet programs
NClark County School District offers a variety of magnet programs for elementary and secondary levels of education. Magnet programs give students the unique opportunity to receive a more structured and focused plan of study based on their individual interests. Areas of emphasis include math and science, fine and performing arts, technology, tourism and travel, aerospace and aviation, medical, and law and leadership professions. Admission requirements vary depending on the program and level of education. Below is a list of schools that offer such programs.

national parks & recreation
There are several National Parks to explore and discover that are close to Las Vegas. These year-round parks are a marvel of nature and provide breathtaking vistas that make for great photo opportunities.
DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
In this below-sea-level basin, steady drought and record summer heat make Death Valley a land of extremes. Yet, each extreme has a striking contrast. Towering peaks are frosted with winter snow. Rare rainstorms bring vast fields of wildflowers. Lush oases harbor tiny fish and refuge for wildlife and humans. Despite its morbid name, a great diversity of life thrives in Death Valley.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK

LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA
Swim, boat, hike, cycle, camp and fish at America’s first and largest national recreation area. With striking landscapes and brilliant blue waters, this year-round playground spreads across 1.5 million acres of mountains, canyons, valleys and two vast lakes.
