NEWS BRIEFS Decade-old local sexual battery case leads to arrest in New York

A New York man has been arrested in connection with a sexual battery reported in Flagler County more than a decade ago after new forensic testing detected a sedative in the victim’s blood, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office said Kaivan Rahbar, 64, of Melville, New York, was arrested on a Flagler County fugitive warrant for sexual battery.

Rahbar was returned to Flagler County on Aug. 19 and is being held without bond.

“Eleven years ago, this predator drugged and sexually assaulted a woman who trusted him,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in the Sheriff’s Office news release. “I’m sure he thought he got away with assaulting this woman.”

Staly credited FCSO detectives, the State Attorney’s Office, NMS Labs and the Suffolk County Police Department for their work on the case.

“Let this be a warning to other criminals, don’t ever think you got away,” Staly said. “It’s only a matter of time, sometimes over a decade, but we will get you and you will be brought to justice.”

Woman arrested; deputies say she abandoned pets during eviction A Palm Coast woman was arrested in Seminole County after investigators said she abandoned a dog and cat at her former residence following an eviction.

County Sheriff’s Office, its Agriculture/Ranch Unit responded July 12 to a home on Waybourne Place in Palm Coast after neighbors reported that a dog had been left inside. Neighbors told deputies that the tenant, 36-year-old Erin Curley, had not been seen in several weeks and that the dog could be heard barking and crying inside the home.

Deputies and Palm Coast Animal Control officers entered the residence and found both a dog and a cat. The Sheriff’s Office said the home was in poor condition, with urine and feces throughout the residence, an overflowing litter box in a bedroom and a couch that had been torn apart by the dog.

Investigators said there was no dog food or water inside the home and the toilet bowl was dry. Deputies believed the dog had been drinking from the toilet as its only source of water.

Veterinarians who evaluated the animals found the cat was emaciated and dehydrated and had extremely high calcium levels, along with other health problems. The cat’s condition was severe enough that it was humanely euthanized.

The dog was found to be in good physical health and was taken to the Flagler Humane Society for care. However, the Sheriff’s Office said the dog’s mental condition after being abandoned means it is not expected to be available for adoption.

Investigators determined that water and electricity at the residence had been shut off during the eviction process, leaving the animals without running water or air conditioning for an extended period.

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said in the news release: “We don’t tolerate animal cruelty in any form.”

Palm Coast man sentenced to sex offender probation in drive-thru case

A Deltona man fleeing from Highway Patrol who carjacked a woman’s vehicle in Ormond Beach was arrested on Thursday, Aug. 20, by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office and New Smyrna Beach Police Department after he crashed into oncoming traffic on State Road 44.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 41-year-old Scott Taylor was being pursued by FHP out of Jacksonville when he got off I-95 in Ormond Beach. The Ormond Beach Police Department reported that around 12:19 p.m., a carjacking was reported out of Destination Daytona.

Taylor then traveled south toward New Smyrna Beach, where he crashed into two vehicles near the I-95 overpass.

The Sheriff’s Office reported he attempted to flee again, but was able to be taken into custody.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the use of flock cameras (automated license plate readers) led to Taylor’s arrest, as after he stole the woman’s car in Ormond, its vehicle tag was entered into the “LPR hotlist.”

Flock cameras caught the tag and alerted law enforcement that the stolen vehicle was headed eastbound on SR 44.

While fleeing from law enforcement, Taylor drove at speeds hitting 137 mph, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

At SR 44 and Walmart, he crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed into two vehicles.

A Palm Coast man accused of exposing himself to a minor working at a fast-food drivethru has pleaded guilty and been sentenced to five years of sex offender probation, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Luke Dudkewic, 33, pleaded guilty Aug. 19 to lewd or lascivious exhibition by an offender 18 or older in the presence of a victim younger than 16. Circuit Judge Dawn Nichols sentenced Dudkewic to five years of sex offender probation. He was also declared a registered sex offender and convicted felon, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Staly said he would have preferred a prison sentence but noted that sentencing decisions are outside the agency’s control. He also said Dudkewic is prohibited from returning to the Chick-fil-A where the incident occurred.

FCSO said Dudkewic initially denied intentionally exposing himself, saying he did not believe his genitals or the device were visible beneath his shorts but that they may have accidentally “popped out.”

Dudkewic was arrested at his Palm Coast residence by members of the FCSO Fugitive Unit and Problem Area Crime Enforcement Unit.

He was taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and later released on $10,000 bond. As conditions of his pretrial release, he was prohibited from having contact with minors or using drive-thru facilities.

COPS CORNER AUG. 14

SWIPED FOR FUEL 3:20 p.m. — 1500 block of North U.S. 1, Ormond Beach Larceny. According to a police report, a 28-year-old Jacksonville woman pumped about $68 worth of gasoline into a car before coming inside the store. The woman didn’t know the card’s pin and the transaction was declined.

She attempted to pay using two other cards, but they also declined.

When police spoke to the woman, she told them she met a guy who told her about a “job opportunity” where you get money for getting gas. She said she entered the gas station, saw the business card sitting there and took it, thinking that was what she needed.

The card belonged to a Jacksonville landscaping company, the report states. Police called the company and were informed the gas cards were supposed to be locked behind the counter and that the woman shouldn’t have one.

The woman was taken to jail.

POUR DECISION 9:05 p.m. — 100 block of Williamson Boulevard, Ormond Beach Battery on a law enforcement officer. A 44-year-old drunk Daytona Beach woman was arrested after she spit on a police officer.

While waiting for a female officer to conduct a search, the woman asked the officer if she could drink from a plastic cup she claimed contained water; police report it actually had alcohol.

The officer poured it out, at which point she “became increasingly irate” and spit into his face.

She was restrained and taken to jail.

AUG. 23

FOLLOW ME? 5:55 p.m. — U.S. 1, Bunnell area Fleeing and eluding. A 35-year-old Ormond Beach man was arrested after deputies said he fled from a traffic stop on an unregistered dirt bike, abandoned the bike in the woods and tried to get away.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy saw a red and white dirt bike leave the Eagle Rock Ranch community and travel south along the shoulder of U.S. 1. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the rider looked back and waved his arm as if signaling the deputy to follow him.

The rider continued down a gravel road and onto Circle S Road, slipping through an electronic gate that had opened for another vehicle.

The deputy followed with his emergency lights and siren activated but eventually lost sight of the dirt bike.

Deputies followed the bike’s tracks and found it abandoned in a wooded area. Fire Flight and a K-9 team were called in to help search for the rider.

Fire Flight later spotted a man matching the rider’s description attempting to leave a Circle S Road home in a vehicle. Deputies stopped the vehicle and found the 35-year-old inside.

He was arrested on a charge of fleeing and eluding law enforcement.

WOMAN ACCUSED OF SHOPLIFTING 21 TIMES 1:02 p.m. — State Road 100, Palm Coast Petit theft. A Palm Coast woman was arrested on 21 counts of petit theft after deputies said she was linked to a series of shoplifting incidents at a retail store in the Town Center area dating back to May 2025.

Palm Coast settles Town Center lawsuit with $17 million land purchase Council members say owning the property could spur economic development, but risk comes with it.

The Palm Coast City Council has approved a $17 million agreement to purchase 259 acres in Town Center and settle a lawsuit over water and sewer capacity, with council members debating whether the financial risk is worth gaining control of a large piece of undeveloped land in the heart of the city.

The council voted 4-1 at its Aug. 19 workshop to approve the settlement with Palm Coast Holdings LLC and related entities. Vice Mayor Theresa Pontieri cast the lone dissenting vote.

Under the agreement, Palm Coast will pay $17 million for several parcels totaling approximately 259 acres. City Attorney Marcus Duffy told the council that about 95 to 96 acres of the property are usable or buildable. The purchase agreement calls for a $1 million deposit and gives the city 60 days to inspect and evaluate the property, fol-

lowed by a 30-day closing period.

The lawsuit will be stayed during the city’s due diligence period and dismissed once the city closes on the property, Duffy said.

The city’s litigation team and outside counsel recommended accepting the agreement.

For several council members, the deciding factor was that the city would not simply be paying to end a lawsuit — it would receive land that could

potentially be sold or used to attract future economic development.

Councilman Dave Sullivan said continuing the litigation could leave the city in a worse position even if Palm Coast ultimately prevailed.

“If we push on, if we don’t agree to this mitigated settlement and we go to court, what would be the results of that?

To me, they’re all bad,” Sullivan said.

If the city lost, Sullivan said, it could ultimately pay more

than the $17 million settlement. Even if it won, the city would still have legal expenses and would not control the property.

“We don’t own the land. We have our court fees to pay, and we have essentially pushed the can down the street,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan said he believes the city could eventually recover its investment by selling individual parcels.

Palm Coast considers reserves, borrowing to fund $17M Town Center purchase Palm Coast officials are considering a combination of city reserves, borrowing and revenues from the State Road 100 Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) to pay for the city’s $17 million purchase of approximately 259 acres in Town Center.

The land purchase is part of a settlement resolving a lawsuit involving Palm Coast Holdings LLC and related entities and the city. During the council’s Aug. 25 budget workshop, city officials began discussing how to finance the purchase. Finance staff said the city manager executed the settlement agreement Aug. 20 and the city made a $1 million escrow deposit Aug. 24.

Finance staff presented several options, including temporarily lowering the city’s General Fund reserve goal, establishing a line of credit of up to $15 million and eventually using tax increment financing revenues from the State Road 100 Community Redevelopment Area to help repay the cost of the purchase. The city could also direct future General Fund reserves above its target toward repayment and market some of the acquired parcels for sale.

The city’s adopted policy calls for General Fund reserves of 10% to 20% of the

following year’s budgeted expenditures, but Palm Coast has aimed for a 25% reserve. Finance staff said the city’s current reserve level is about 28.4%. Dropping the reserve to 20% would make about $5.7 million available, while reducing it to 15% would free up approximately $9 million.

Council Member Dave Sullivan favored using more of the city’s reserves to reduce the amount Palm Coast would have to borrow.

“I think going to 15% at this point in the end will save us money in the long run,” Sullivan said.

Pontieri, who opposed the settlement agreement, raised concerns about borrowing against the General Fund. She asked staff what the interest would cost if the city borrowed $12 million over three years. Assuming a variable interest rate of about 4.9% remained constant, staff estimated the interest at approximately $650,000.

Pontieri called borrowing $12 million against the General Fund “a terrible idea.”

Mayor Mike Norris summarized Sullivan’s approach as lowering the city’s reserve level to 15%, putting approximately $9 million toward the purchase and financing the remainder. Sullivan said

using more reserves would save the city money by reducing the amount it needs to borrow.

Pontieri, however, said she did not want the land purchase to consume money that could be used for other council priorities.

“What I am trying to make sure is that we are not putting all of our eggs in this one basket and casting aside everything else that we decided was important to us,” Pontieri said.

She pointed to other needs discussed by the council, including road paving, public safety and funding toward a new animal shelter.

“There are other options besides using the entire fund balance towards this one initiative,” Pontieri said.

“And I am asking council to consider the other things that we had decided were important to us rather than putting every single penny into this purchase.”

Sullivan disagreed that the approach would consume all of the city’s reserves. He said using between roughly $5 million and $9 million from reserves would reduce the overall cost of the land purchase because the city would pay less interest.

Council Member Charles Gambaro said the acqui-

sition fits with the city’s economic development goals, particularly following Raydient’s withdrawal of its applications for the proposed westward expansion.

He said acquiring the Town Center properties could give Palm Coast land to pursue economic development opportunities.

The council ultimately gave staff consensus to move forward with seeking proposals for a General Fund line of credit of up to $15 million. That does not mean Palm Coast will borrow the entire $15 million. Staff said seeking proposals from banks would provide financing options, with the council able to determine later how much of the available credit to use.

CRA money could also play an important role in eventually paying for the acquisition. The State Road 100 CRA is scheduled to expire in 2034. The city’s CRA plan would have to be amended to allow those dollars to be used for repayment. Finance staff also said TIF revenues are expected to become available for land acquisition repayment beginning in 2029.

Norris asked finance staff to bring back different scenarios so the council can compare options.

In Sullivan’s estimation, the individual parcels could ultimately be worth more than the city’s purchase price.

Councilman Charles Gambaro also supported the purchase, describing it as a strategic opportunity to control land surrounding Town Center.

Gambaro said the property has been valued at close to $35 million, although he noted the city would know more if it moves forward with an appraisal during the due diligence process.

“From a strategic perspective, this is a fantastic opportunity to provide for lands and buildings,” Gambaro said. “I’m more focused on the strategic picture of this action. It’s land acquisition.”

Mayor Mike Norris also supported the settlement, saying he believed acquiring the property was in the city’s best interest despite the risk.

“It’s risky, but leaders make calculated risk,” Norris said.

Norris said controlling the land is only useful if the city can ultimately put it to productive use.

“We have to get rid of the land. We have to develop it.

We have to get people in the Town Center,” he said.

Norris did, however, raise concerns during the meeting about communications involving attorneys for the plaintiffs and council members and questioned whether an independent company should handle the title and transfer. Duffy said he had not seen anything that would taint the settlement or violate legal requirements and recommended that the council approve the agreement as written.

Pontieri’s concerns centered on the financial implications of the deal.

She said she understood the economic development benefits of controlling the Town Center property but was uncomfortable with the financial uncertainties surrounding the acquisition.

“We don’t have really a solid way to pay for this,” Pontieri said.

Pontieri said the $17 million purchase price does not represent the city’s entire potential cost. She said the city would also take on responsibility for a $1.9 million outstanding bond associated with the development and would have to pay $13,000 annually on each of two parcels through 2044 if the city continues to own them.

“So the $17 million is not the totality of the monies that our taxpayers would be paying for this,” she said.

Pontieri said there were too many unknowns surrounding how long the city might own the properties and what maintenance obligations could accompany them.

“I see the benefit of going this route, but with our taxpayer dollars, I’m not willing to take that risk,” she said.

LAWSUIT BEGINNINGS

Palm Coast Holdings and related entities sued Palm Coast in October 2025 in a dispute involving development rights and the availability of water and wastewater capacity in Town Center.

According to the lawsuit, the plaintiffs alleged that Palm Coast failed to reserve water and wastewater capacity associated with development entitlements granted through the Town Center Development of Regional Impact, or DRI. The Palm Coast Observer reported in November 2025 that Florida Landmark Companies LLC and Palm Coast Holdings were among the developers suing the city.

The developers said deals for two Town Center properties fell through in 2024 after the city would not guarantee the water and wastewater capacity needed for future development.

The plaintiffs argued in the lawsuit that the lack of guaranteed utility capacity reduced the value of their vacant property. They sought enforcement of what they said were existing development entitlements or monetary damages if the city could not provide the necessary utility capacity. The lawsuit alleged damages including lost profits, reduced property values and lost sales.

The history goes back more than 20 years, when Florida Landmark Companies negotiated the Town Center DRI with Palm Coast in 2003.

The development rights were updated in 2022 and again in 2024 after some of the properties were sold. The developers argued that those agreements guaranteed their rights to water and wastewater capacity for future development.

The lawsuit was also filed as Palm Coast dealt with broader utility capacity issues. The Observer previously reported that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection cited the city in 2024 for exceeding water and wastewater capacities and required upgrades to address the city’s needs.

Palm Coast has denied liability in the lawsuit. Under the newly approved settlement, neither the city nor the plaintiffs admit wrongdoing. Both sides will release their claims related to the litigation and will be responsible for their own legal costs.

Palm Coast is not required to develop the 259 acres itself.

Instead, the city could eventually make portions available to businesses or private developers as part of its economic development strategy.

Westward expansion comes to a halt. Loop Road will still move forward.

Citing a lack of local support, Raydient is pulling back but may try again in the future.

The westward is expansion is on hold, as Raydient has withdrawn its application, although a representative said the door remains open to try a new plan in the future.

Raydient’s decision to withdraw its applications for Palm Coast’s proposed west-

ward expansion will not affect the city’s Loop Road project, according to Palm Coast officials.

The city confirmed that Loop Road will continue as a separate transportation project despite Raydient’s withdrawal of its applications involving roughly 20,000 acres west of the city.

“The withdrawal of Raydient’s applications does not affect the Loop Road project,” the city said in response to questions from the Observer. “Loop Road is a separate transportation project.”

The roadway has received

state appropriations, and the city said state leaders and transportation officials have supported the project because of its anticipated role in the future regional transportation network. The road is expected to provide a local connection as other regional transportation improvements move forward, including planned connections associated with the new County Road 2209 roadway system linking the Orlando and Jacksonville regions.

tion requests, a comprehensive plan amendment, Development of Regional Impact abandonments and other associated applications and agreements.

The city said Raydient did not provide a specific reason for withdrawing the applications.

Mike Hahaj, director of development for Raydient, a subsidiary of Rayonier, told the Observer that the company decided to withdraw after concluding there was not enough support for the proposal to move forward.

“There just wasn’t sup-

port there from staff and City Council seemingly to move forward,” Hahaj said.

He said that, rather than continue to a council vote that appeared likely to result in denial, Raydient chose to withdraw the applications.

Hahaj said the decision also preserved Raydient’s ability to revisit the property in the future. He said city staff had indicated that a denial would have resulted in a two-year freeze on returning with another proposal for the property. Raydient did not want a denial to prevent it from pursuing opportunities as infrastructure and other development moves forward in the area.

“That’s the whole point,” Hahaj said when asked whether withdrawing instead of being denied kept the door open to working together in the future. “And work collaboratively to accomplish economic development.”

The withdrawal also canceled the City Council’s Aug. 25 special business meeting on the westward expansion.

No additional council action is needed because the applications are no longer pending.

If Raydient decides to pursue the project again, new applications would have to be submitted and go through the city’s review and approval process.

Vice Mayor Theresa Pontieri said the withdrawal provides an opportunity to reconsider how development of the western lands should move forward.

“This withdrawal should not be viewed as the end of the conversation,” Pontieri said.

“It should be an opportunity to get the plan right.”

Pontieri said she is not opposed to growth but wants adequate infrastructure, clearly defined financial responsibilities and protec-

tions for existing taxpayers before development of that magnitude moves forward.

“A project of this magnitude would shape Palm Coast and Flagler County for generations,” she said. “We cannot afford to get it wrong.”

Pontieri said questions remain about roads and transportation, water and wastewater capacity, public safety, schools, environmental protections and who would pay for infrastructure needed to accommodate tens of thousands of additional residents.

“Most importantly, existing Palm Coast taxpayers should not be asked to subsidize the cost of new development,” she said.

Council Member Dave Sullivan said several issues that have emerged recently raised additional questions about whether this was the right time for the proposal.

Sullivan cited concerns including the recent court decision involving the city’s impact fees, school district concerns over the proposed development, the city’s $17 million Town Center land purchase, historical sites within the western expansion area, Loop Road funding concerns and what he described as an overall lack of community support.

“Raydient made the decision to withdraw at this time and live to fight another day,” Sullivan said.

Pontieri said she remains willing to work with Raydient, Flagler County, regional partners and residents on a future plan that puts more emphasis on economic development and good-paying jobs while protecting environmentally sensitive lands and ensuring infrastructure is in place.

“Palm Coast will continue to grow,” Pontieri said. “The question is not whether we grow, but how we grow.”

Joe Biro opened the Kings Java Hut coffee trailer to give his niece in Arizona a business to run. But she decided not to come to Florida.

So instead, Annie Urquia, a friend of Biro’s from church, is making the fresh coffee drinks and handing them out through the drive-thru window at the little trailer in front of Club 51 Social Club of Palm Coast at 51 N. Old Kings Road.

Kings Java Hut has been open for about two months.

Biro imports the coffee beans from Colombia and Nicaragua. Everything else is local, he said, including his roaster.

He uses Trilogy Coffee Roasting Company in DeLand.

Every piece of machinery in the trailer is brand new, including a $3,000 espresso bean grinder, Biro said.

Kings Java Hut focuses on coffee and specialty drinks.

They have muffins when available but no other food or pastries, Biro said.

The coffee is ground fresh.

Kings Java Hut has fresh drip coffee, 18-hour cold brew, lattes, cappuccinos, Americanos, white or chocolate mochas with whipped cream and caramel macchiatos with vanilla and tall froth. Their

speciality drinks include the blonde latte (latte and cream with choice of flavor) and Nutty Hazel (white or chocolate mocha, hazelnut and rich cream).

Their newest drink is the Honey Buzz: an iced drink with a honey cinnamon base, double espresso, milk and cold foam or whipped topping.

Kings Java Hut is open Tuesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to noonish, Biro said.

Their non-coffee drinks include hot chocolate and the steamer (warm or cold milk with flavor choice). Prices range from $3 for the steamer, $3.25 for hot chocolate and $3.50 for a 12-ounce regular or decaf coffee to $6.75 for the 16-ounce Nutty Hazel.

Prices are always 50% off for

service members and veterans. On Military Monday, the first 25 cups for service members and veterans are free. On Funtime Fridays, everything is 50% off from 8-10 a.m. and a cup of coffee and a muffin is $5. Drinks for first responders are free on Fridays.

Biro said the name came from a coffee business he once owned in California, Joe’s Java Hut. Since this coffee trailer is on Old Kings Road, he added “Kings” to the name, he said.

“Now it’s just a hobby,” he said. “It’s not an income stream for me. If it works out, I’ll expand. Right now, I’m pretty happy.”

Shrimp po’boys? Got it. New Orleans Original cafe to open in Ormond The new restaurant at 188 E. Granada Blvd. will offer authentic Creole and Cajun food.

Ormond Beach is about to get a taste of true, authentic Creole and Cajun food with the opening of a new restaurant downtown.

New Orleans Original Creole/Cajun Cafe will open its doors on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Located at 188 E. Granada Blvd., in the building of the former Gili’s Kitchen, the restaurant will offer a variety of dishes often found in New Orleans’ French Quarter, including shrimp po’boys, charbroiled oysters, beignets, sno-balls and king cakes.

“It’s just like a cafe on Bourbon Street,” restaurant owner Brett Blanchard said. “The feel, the music, the vibe.”

Blanchard, who grew up in the Metairie suburb of New Orleans, has been around the restaurant and baking industry his whole life. He used to own daiquiri shops in New

Orleans, and when Blanchard moved to Ormond Beach in 2001, he couldn’t find a restaurant that served authentic food from his home state.

He knew then that he and his family needed to bring those flavors here.

Twenty-five years later, that vision is finally coming to fruition for the Blanchard

family, who have pooled together recipes from family and friends to create their restaurant’s menu.

They’ve made their restaurant a “one-stop shop” for a select slate of New Orleans cuisine, said Blanchard’s wife, Alisa. Typically, in Louisiana, customers have to go to different bakeries and restaurants

to get specific food items.

“We wanted to focus on quality as opposed to quantity,” Alisa Blanchard said.

“We wanted to stay as true to his New Orleans roots as we could. We didn’t want a huge menu and everything be subpar. We wanted a small menu and things be phenomenal.”

Their son Joey Mendez is

the restaurant’s chef. Mendez has worked in the culinary world since he was 18, having started at Stonewood Grille.

Over the years, Mendez has worked in the kitchens of local restaurants, including The Dish Tavern and Grille, Blau and Madeline’s Wine Bar. Is the food spicy? Not all of it, but some dishes will have spice, of course, Mendez said.

“With that spice, there’s balance,” he said. “You’re gonna get a sno-ball in one hand, you’re gonna get a po’ boy in the other. They pair so well with each other.”

The family had been looking for a place to open up their restaurant for some time before they came across the location at 188 E. Granada Blvd.

After Gili’s Kitchen closed in April, the family’s real estate agent called them to let them know it was available.

The Blanchards, who have a background in construction, were at their farm in Georgia when they received the call and drove down that same day to look at the building.

Alisa Blanchard said the building already had a French Quarter feel, and that was a selling point for them.

“If you go down Bourbon Street or any of those streets, all the bars and restaurants — they all have French doors open to the sidewalk,” Brett Blanchard said. “You just walk in, so we’re going to have that feeling.”

The family started renovations on June 1, transforming the interior to celebrate Mardi Gras and Louisiana culture.

“That’s one thing about [Brett] — when he sets his mind to something and gets going, he is full steam ahead,” said Briana James, the Blanchards’ daughter. “We were in here every day, still are, just making sure everything is fine-tuned and ready to go.”

Brett Blanchard said he’s excited to open people’s eyes to the flavors he grew up with.

“I grew up in the best place in the world to get the most flavorful food there is,” he said. “People don’t realize it till they taste it. When they taste it, they’re like, “Oh my God!’ I was like, ‘Yeah! My mama used to cook it for us every night.”

18-hole mini golf course plan is on Flagler Beach planning board agenda The proposed 18-hole course on A1A will go before the planning board on Sept. 1.

An 18-hole miniature golf course could be coming to A1A in Flagler Beach.

Seagrove Beach Investments LLC is seeking approval to develop the course on vacant property at 1000 Ocean Shore Blvd. S. near 10th Street South and A1A. The proposal is scheduled to go before the Flagler Beach Planning and Architectural Review Board on Sept. 1.

Flagler Beach City Planner Lupita McClenning said the property has a commercial

future land use designation and is zoned General Commercial. A miniature golf course is considered a commercial recreational facility and can be allowed in the district through a special exception.

The conceptual plan calls for an 18-hole course along with an approximately 600-square-foot building where customers could pay

and pick up clubs and other equipment. The property, which consists of six parcels, is currently vacant.

Renderings show a landscaped course with water features and other decorative elements. The proposal is designed to direct activity toward Ocean Shore Boulevard and away from homes along Central Avenue. Plans also call for directional light-

ing and glare guards to limit impacts on neighboring homes and sea turtles during nesting season, as well as landscaping and a decorative wall along the western property line.

Under Flagler Beach’s development rules, the miniature golf course needs approval from the City Commission after first going before the Planning and Architectural

Review Board. The board will look at seven requirements, including how the project fits with the surrounding area, its impact on public safety and nearby properties, landscaping, parking and traffic.

McClenning said it is too early to determine when the miniature golf course could open if it receives the necessary approvals.

The Flagler County School Board approved a School Health Services Plan for the next two years as required by Florida statutes.

The board approved the plan as part of its consent agenda at its Aug. 25 business meeting.

Each county health department is required to develop the biennial plan with the school district and its school health advisory committee.

At the board’s workshop earlier in the day, board members were presented with details of the plan and updates on student health services.

School Health Advisory Committee Chair John Fanelli, District School Health Coordinator Michelle Postel and Flagler County Health Department School Health Coordinator Stephanie Ear discussed the plan and the district’s student health services.

Last year, on any given day, 995 Flagler Schools students were provided medications or prescribed procedures, Postel said.

The 2026-28 plan will include a required Plan for Urgent Life-Saving Emergencies (PULSE) including cardiac emergencies.

Current programs that will continue include distribution of Department of Health material on Type 1 diabetes early detection. With parental consent, students are able to self-carry and administer headache medication.

There has been staff health training for opioid overdose protocol. All schools have received cabinets stocked with NARCAN. In answering a question from board member Janie Ruddy about monitoring students with food allergies during lunch, Fanelli said the district has been reviewing the procedures, making sure there are multiple checkpoints. Student ID badges are scanned at the register in the food lines making sure the students’ food selections align with any allergies they have.

The teachers are part of the process as well, Superintendent LaShakia Moore said.

The district does not allow students to share food, she said. And peanuts have been eliminated from the food lines.

“We are a peanut-free school district,” Fanelli said, “because that is one of the most common food allergies regarding anaphylaxis.”

STOP-LOSS CONTRACT APPROVED

The board also approved a stop-loss insurance contract with Ryan Specialty for the current year, beginning in September. Stop-loss insurance provides financial protection against unusually large individual claims above the district’s $250,000 specified threshold.

The district had five individual health-care claims in the last school year that were over $250,000.

Brown and Brown Insurance Services Vice President Danielle Boyle told the board at the workshop that because increases in high-cost claims have been rising faster than overall market trends, 11 carriers declined to provide the district with a quote.

“They’re cherry picking right now,” she said.

The increase in stop-loss premiums for the $250,000 deductible will be 24.35% or about $128,000.

Ruddy suggested that the district monitor The Florida Educator Health Trust (FLEHT) for progress on its collective stop-loss insurance. The board perviously voted not to join FLEHT, because of its inexperience with self-insured districts, but the trust has since added seven districts that are selfinsured.

The board also approved broker services with Brown and Brown for an initial term of three years with two optional one-year renewals.

Man kills ex-girlfriend’s friend, then himself in Palm Coast OBSERVER STAFF

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent murder-suicide that left two Palm Coast men dead early Tuesday morning.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after 2 a.m. Aug. 25 to a home on Bronson Lane after a woman called 911 and reported that an armed man had entered the home and was shooting. The woman and a child were able to escape to a nearby residence while the shooter remained inside.

FCSO said that as deputies approached the home, 34-year-old Jerome Curry exited the residence and shot himself. Deputies secured the firearm and entered the home, where they found 28-year-old Andrew Yoder suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Deputies searched the surrounding area, nearby neighborhoods and Curry’s apartment but were unable to locate him.

Investigators said Curry later returned to the home, burglarized it and shot Yoder before taking his own life as deputies arrived.

Twelve days before the shooting, on Aug. 13, deputies had taken Curry into protective custody under the Baker Act after he made statements about self-harm following a

relationship breakup in April.

He was taken to a facility for a mental health evaluation.

FCSO said deputies had also had numerous encounters with Curry since 2023, most involving civil or verbal disputes that did not result in criminal charges.

“Our prayers go out to the families affected by this shooting, which resulted in the senseless death of two people,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “This is a horrific and tragic incident for everyone involved.”

Curry had no criminal history, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“Guess what we learned in school? The history of seat belts,” he said.

I assumed he was saying this to complain, but I was wrong.

“It was kind of interesting,” he said. “I learned that they used crash-test dummies to figure out how safe it was.

Then they made a law that you must have a seat belt in the front seats of any new car.

Then they made another law that said you had to have seat belts in the back, too. And we’re still using them today!”

“So you liked learning about seat belts?” I asked.

“I like learning about history,” he said. “But I still do not wish that I lived in the old-timey times, like in the 1900s and stuff.”

LETTERS ‘Hobgoblins of disinformation’ create a different kind of election fraud Dear Editor: Election fraud is usually considered to be the classic and familiar illegal voting of some sort. Flagler County has little if any of that. But a different kind of election “fraud” has surfaced locally over the last few years in the form of fraudulent campaign mailers, the hijacking and rerouting of campaign websites to that of an opponent, and recently the disinformation text messages sent to local voters targeting various local political candidates.

Unlike the typical individualized voter fraud, this kind of fraud is vastly more egregious and damaging because it reaches large numbers of our electorate with the real potential of influencing an election outcome. But, unlike simple voter fraud, catching those hobgoblins of disinformation is next to impossible.

It would of course be unfair to speculate or imply any responsibility on the part of the candidates or their consultants who may have benefited from these dishonest attempts to manipulate election outcomes. All expectedly denied responsibility or any knowledge of the fraud.

But will these candidates, who had campaign platforms based on integrity and faith based values, express outrage, and vigorously condemn what happened with hopes those responsible be caught? We all should.

Recollections of a 9/11 survivor Dear Editor: I was in the World Trade Center when the first hijacked plane hit the North Tower 25 years ago. Even after these many years, I can recall and replay almost minute to minute, in granular detail, how that horrific day unfolded, as if it happened yesterday.

There is little doubt that survivors and responders who were present that day at or around Ground Zero maintain the same detailed, clear recollection, as well. And, like me, they will never need to be reminded of the 9/11 motto, “We Will Never Forget.” For those of us, remembering is “baked in” forever.

For me those indelible details included the mad dash out of the North Tower, the hunkering down in my office just a few blocks away, watching both buildings collapse from that office window, the long surreal trek out through the thick smoke and dust with the white dust-covered streets looking like a winter snowfall, and eventually the view from the Manhattan Bridge escape route of the nearly mile-high plume of smoke coming from the remains of both towers.

After finally making it home many hours later and even after the adrenaline rush subsided, the full impact wasn’t felt until I awoke the next day and realized that it had not been just a really bad day, but rather that the whole world may have moved to a very dark place and may not fully recover. I flashed back 60 years to how Franklin Roosevelt famously referred to Pearl Harbor as “a day that will live in infamy.”

And the health-related legacy persists for many thousands of responders, survivors and recovery workers impacted by their exposure to toxins released by the collapse of the Twin Towers.

Elite travel all-girl football team in Flagler County looks to test itself against statewide and national teams.

Pretty Dangerous is making a name for itself.

Coaches Bruce Garrison and Matt Hathaway have put together a team of local girls specifically to travel and test themselves in flag football against the best statewide and national competition.

“Girls flag football is blowing up right now,” Garrison said.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, girls flag football is officially the fastest growing sport in the United States. As of 2023 around 500,000 girls from the ages of 6-17 played girls flag football.

Florida has the longest standing sanctioned high school girls flag football program, with 360 schools involved and over 10,000 participants.

“They were born at the right time,” Hathaway said of the girls on the team. “Girls

“Boys grow up, and as soon as they get to high school, typically, they start to play tackle,” Garrison said. “These girls, they have an opportunity to play flag now, then, go to high school and play flag, go D1 which there’s scholarships now, and then the Olympics.”

Most of the girls on the team began playing flag football with boys on co-ed teams in Mad Dogs Flag Football, which they say helped prepare them for where they are now.

“It’s a lot different how [the boys] play, kind of. The hype, the toughness,” said Dahlia Albrecht, team member.

A couple of years ago, Garrison and Hathaway decided to take a group of only girls up to participate in an all-girls league in Ponte Vedra.

“We didn’t think we could compete,” Hathaway said.

“Six championships later, I feel like we’re doing alright.”

A student-created pilot program in Flagler Schools is demonstrating how career and technical education can extend far beyond the classroom, empowering students not only to develop technical skills, but to become educators, mentors and community leaders.

This summer, that vision became reality through 3D Model Makers, a pilot program created by 14-year-old ninth grader Xander Dattolico in partnership with the Flagler Schools CTE department.

Held on July 27–31 at Buddy Taylor Middle School, the week-long camp introduced six rising sixth-grade students from across the district to computer-aided design, engineering principles, and 3D printing. The idea began after Xander earned his Autodesk Fusion 360 certification in the spring of 2025 through the Engineering Design program at Buddy Taylor Middle School.

Inspired by the opportunities he had been given, he wanted younger students to experience engineering and design before they reached middle school electives and high school career pathways.

He got to work in the summer of 2025 when he informally taught Fusion 360

to neighborhood students.

Seeing their enthusiasm, he developed the concept into a structured curriculum and presented it to Flagler Schools CTE Curriculum Specialist Martin Evans, who recognized its potential as a new community outreach initiative.

With the support of school and district leadership, that student proposal evolved into the district’s first studentdesigned engineering summer camp.

“This CTE pilot program would never have started if Xander hadn’t come to me with the idea,” Evans said.

“This type of early exploration is exactly what CTE is designed to do. It sparks curiosity, builds confidence and helps students discover future career interests. We’re proud to have partnered with Xander to make this opportunity available to our community.”

Unlike a traditional summer camp, 3D Model Makers was largely designed and taught by a student. Xander devel-

oped the curriculum and led instruction throughout the week, while Buddy Taylor Middle School engineering design teacher Tracy Jones, Xander’s former 3D printing instructor, served as a mentor teacher and adviser.

Students progressed from learning the fundamentals of computer-aided design to solving real engineering problems. Their final challenge required them to design, prototype and 3D print a custom tool capable of retrieving a rubber duck from a pool.

One of the students, Giana Gemmola, said, “I really love this camp because it lets me explore new things. I have already told my parents about it and now that I understand Fusion 360, they are thinking of getting the family a 3D printer and I am excited to teach my younger siblings.”

Dattolico said that the experiences with Flagler’s CTE program helped spark his interest in engineering and technology.

“If this camp inspires even one student to discover a passion for engineering or technology, then it’s already been a success,” he said.

While this inaugural camp served six students, its longterm potential reaches much further.

“We need more programs like this that introduce students to technology at an early age,” said Nick Ohree, whose son, John, participated in the camp. “John has always loved science, but he has never been exposed to this level of technology before. This experience opened his eyes to what’s possible and gave him the tools to turn his ideas into reality. That’s something no one can ever take away from him.”

Xander envisions growing 3D Model Makers into a broader student-led program that could reach more students though additional summer camps, after-school programs, school partnerships, libraries, makerspaces and community organizations throughout Flagler County.

As new technologies in advanced manufacturing, automation and artificial intelligence continue reshaping tomorrow’s workforce, initiatives like 3D Model Makers help ensure that students are introduced to creativity, engineering and innovation at an earlier age.

“I hope this pilot is only the beginning,” Jones said. “By working together, we have an opportunity to expand access to hands-on STEM and CTE learning throughout Flagler County, creating more opportunities for students to learn, lead and inspire the next generation.”

YOUR TOWN Flagler Beach teen among ‘dreamers’ honored on Dream Day in Jacksonville Seth Rowe, 15, of Flagler Beach, was one of 36 “dreamers” celebrated at Dream Day on June 27 in Jacksonville.

The PRI Productions and Dreams Come True event provided a special day to area children who battle lifethreatening medical conditions.

The dreamers arrived dressed as their favorite characters, walked the red carpet and shared a day of entertainment, music, food and activities with their loved ones.

Rowe wore a Jacksonville Jaguars football jersey and was greeted by former Jacksonville Jaguar and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Boselli; Jaguars mascot Jaxson de Ville; and members of The Roar, the Jaguars cheerleading team.

Boselli and the Jaguars surprised Rowe with an official contract to be a Jacksonville Jaguar for the day, “creating

a magical, memorable break from the day-to-day realities of living with cancer, twice,” according to a press release.

The event drew more than 2,000 attendees.

Flagler’s Michael Tucker installed as 1st VP of Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association Flagler County Fire Rescue Chief Michael Tucker was installed as first vice president of the Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association at its Executive Development Conference in July.

“I could not do this without the support of the strong team working behind me and our county leadership,” Tucker said. “We have a phenomenal team in Flagler County and it’s an honor to represent them.”

Ehimen “He-man” Ajede scored three touchdowns and safety Nei’coo Murphy — lining up in the offensive backfield and taking direct snaps as a wildcat quarterback — scored two more as Flagler Palm Coast continued its dominance over Flagler County rival Matanzas with a 42-7 season-opening victory on Friday, Aug. 21, at Sal Campanella Stadium.

Fans of FPC and Matanzas packed both the home and visiting stands, respectively, for the annual Potato Bowl, the biggest football game of the year in Flagler County, with the two high schools vying for the shared County Championship Trophy.

The result was similar to most games in the 18-year series with FPC winning its fourth Potato Bowl game in a row and its 15th against Matanzas in 18 meetings.

“This is my senior year, and that’s four years of whooping these guys,” Ajede said. “I still love them, though. We’re still one county.”

Ajede rushed for 134 yards on 16 carries. His 67-yard third-quarter touchdown run gave the Bulldogs a commanding 34-7 lead.

“The corners just came. They crashed on me, and it opened up and I just took it to the house,” he said.

FPC students packed the stands for the season-opener against county rival Matanzas.

Matanzas took the early lead with sophomore quarterback Cole Hardy hitting freshman “sniffer” H-back Christian Perkins with a 16-yard touchdown pass with 4:55 left in the first quarter.

The drive started with a fumble recovery by Jayden McCoy at the 50-yard line.

Matanzas kept the drive alive with a fake punt as Antoine Jenkins ran 28 yards to the Bulldogs’ 15-yard line for a first down.

But the rest of the game was all FPC. Murphy tied it up with a 4-yard touchdown run on the first of four secondquarter touchdowns by the Bulldogs. Sophomore quarterback Reid Pritt, making his first varsity start, tossed a 19-yard scoring pass to Trace Paffrath with 4:52 left in the half to give FPC a lead it would not relinquish.

The Bulldogs took advantage of two consecutive Pirates’ turnovers to score two more touchdowns before halftime, both by Ajede.

“The first time I got in the end zone, my guys were pushing me,” Ajede said. “It was a little hot evening. It was humid. And I was like, ‘He-Man, you got to push it,’ and the touchdown came. [I] managed to get three tonight.

I’m just so grateful. I thank God for it.”

Matanzas fumbled a punt snap at its own 19, leading to Ajede’s first score, an 8-yard touchdown run with 2:41 left in the half. On first down of the next series, Caleb Shamblin intercepted a pass by Hardy to set up Ajede’s 7-yard touchdown run putting FPC up 28-7 with just under a minute left in the half.

“I think we let our emotions get the best of us in that first half,” Matanzas coach Matt Forrest said. “And it just seems like in this game, we have catastrophic errors. I feel like 14-7 is fair at halftime with us getting the ball back coming out of the half. But when it went to 21-7, and we got a young quarterback, and just a lot of things went wrong on that play, they capitalized on it [to make it 28-7]. It just gives a little different feel the rest of the game.”

backfield presence. Murphy scored the Bulldogs’ final touchdown on a 3-yard run and added the 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter.

“That’s kind of the plan (to use Murphy on both offense and defense), but you have to be judicious about it,” FPC coach Patrick Turner said.

“He started cramping in the fourth quarter, so you can’t play him all the time, and we’re fortunate enough that we got some really good players that play in his position (on defense). We just kind of put him in (on offense) for different things, and he does a great job.”

Turner said Pritt did a fantastic job in his first start after

missing some early throws.

Pritt finished 8-for-13 for 51 yards passing and a touchdown.

“Once he calmed down, he hit some and was really, really good,” Turner said.

Hardy’s touchdown pass was the Pirates’ only completion. Matanzas accumulated 127 yards rushing with Wiley Conner gaining 49 yards on 10 carries, Perkins running for 48 yards on three carries and Darwin Harris rushing for 27 yards on 11 carries. Conner, a 1,000-yard rusher last season, also played extensively on defense and shared carries with Harris.

er said of Conner. “You just have to gang tackle him. We preached it. We got to all get to the football. You got to wrap up his legs. He’s a powerful kid, and he popped a couple on us, but we kept fighting. Our defense played lights out.”

The Bulldogs have been so dominant in the series that the 35-point margin was only their ninth largest point differential in their 15 victories.

“It was fun,” Turner said.

lagler Palm Coast not only won the Potato Bowl game against county-rival Matanzas on Friday, Aug. 21, the Bulldogs also won the JV game against the Pirates on Thursday, Aug. 20, at Matanzas.

FPC’s Alex Keiser threw a touchdown pass to JJ Miller and the Bulldogs added a 2-point conversion to take a 20-14 lead with 3:25 left in the game.

With the Pirates driving in the final minute, the Bulldogs clinched the victory with Elijah Washington’s interception in the end zone.

Four Flagler Palm Coast state champs received their championship rings before a packed stadium during the Potato Bowl football game on Aug. 21.

Logan Jacobelli, Will Roberts, Mikey Najpaver and Jordan Haymon won the boys 4x400 relay title at the Class 4A state track and field championships last spring.

Roberts, Najpaver and Haymon have all graduated but returned for the ceremony wearing FPC T-shirts, while Jacobelli, a wide receiver playing in the game, was dressed in his football uniform. Boys track coach David Halliday presented the athletes with their rings after the first quarter of the game.

A total of eight FPC athletes won state championships in 2026, including weightlifters Nya Williams, Cody Strawser and Matt McFall and track and field triple jump champ Karina Marcelus.

Matanzas wins season-opening girls golf match against FPC Matanzas High School’s girls golf team won its seasonopening match 180-189 against Flagler Palm Coast High at Palm Harbor Golf Club on Monday, Aug. 24.

Matanzas junior Mary Grace Seward shot 4-over-par 40 to win individual medalist honors. FPC’s Ivey Tsouklaris was second with a 41.

“I’m happy I can come out for my team and win,” Seward said. “Everyone played really well.”

Seward shanked her tee shot into the woods on the par-5 No. 3 but scrambled out and recovered for a bogey.

She finished with four pars on four of the last five holes (Nos. 5, 6, 8 and 9).

The Pirates’ other scorers were McKenzie Harrington and Scarlett MacKenzie, who each shot a 46, and Willa

Furnari, who shot a 48. FPC’s other golfers included Sydney Adams and Lilah Cool, who both shot a 49, and Taci Cook, with a 50.

“We have two rookies on the team,” said Matanzas coach Bryan Schewitz. “But we have a good anchor in Mary Grace.”

Bulldogs win first bowling matches FPC’s bowling teams opened their season on Aug. 17 with a 6-1 boys win and a 6-0 girls win over Pine Ridge at AMF Bowling Lanes in Orange City.

FPC’s Cole Brummer had the high boys game with a 221.

Destiny Bonvouloir had high game for the girls with a 193.

AAU state weightlifting championships

Flagler Palm Coast coach Duane Hagstrom’s club weightlifting team won the boys AAU state championship

for the third year in a row and the girls state championship for the second year in a row.

“I couldn’t be more proud of every athlete who competed and contributed to these championships,” Hagstrom said.

FPC soccer player picks Georgia Southern Flagler Palm Coast junior Emma Scott has committed to play intercollegiate soccer at Georgia Southern University, an NCAA Division I team.

Scott, a midfielder/winger, transferred from Richmond Hill, Georgia, in March after the high school soccer season. She will begin her first season with the Bulldogs in November.

Scott picked Georgia Southern over multiple Division I offers. She plays ENCL soccer for Sporting Jacksonville.

Flagler Palm Coast boys cross country team Spikes competition Douglas Seth won the Spikes and Spurs individual title and the Bulldogs won the team title — both firsts.

Flagler Palm Coast sophomore Douglas Seth said he believes the Bulldogs’ boys cross country team will surprise some people this year.

So far, FPC is off and running.

The Bulldogs won the Spikes and Spurs Classic at the Flagler County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 22, with Seth winning the individual championship.

FPC had never won the boys team or individual title before in the 15-year history of the meet.

“That’s wild that it’s the first time, but there’s a first time for everything,” Seth said. “It’s great confidence for our guys. I think a lot of people don’t realize how good we are.

We’re just going to keep rolling with that.”

The Bulldogs took three of the top four places and five of the top eight to squash the competition with a phenomenal score of 23 points. Ponte Vedra finished second with 54

points.

Seth was the first runner to finish with a time of 15:59.5 seconds. He is the first FPC runner to finish in under 16 minutes at the meet. It was his second fastest time behind a 15:47 at last year’s regional meet.

FPC’s Dylan Ciardi (16:47.1) placed third behind Ponte Vedra’s Luke Ross. The Bulldogs’ other top-eight finishers were Mateo Almeida (fourth place in 16:50.4), Enzo McGovern (seventh place in 17:03.1) and Owen Stackpole (eighth place in 17:19.2).

Seabreeze placed 10th with Joseph Davis leading the Sandcrabs with a 21st-place finish in 18:04.6.

“The kids are excited,” FPC coach David Halliday said.

“They think they can be really successful this year, and not just be at the state meet, but finish high, high up, and I think that’s a very real possibility.”

The team has been bolstered by the additions of Matanzas transfers Ciardi and McGovern.

“Dylan and Enzo, they both have been great,” Seth said.

“We all push each other every day. People ask us who’s the fastest, and we just say it changes every day. It changes every workout. We just have joy in improving each other, not just as runners, as men.

That’s kind of our motto.”

FPC is a young team. Three of its top seven runners at the meet are sophomores (Seth, Ciardi and Brayden Murray who placed 34th out of 199 runners), and only two are seniors (McGovern and Evan Johnson who was 20th).

“We’ve been working together in practice, but it’s something really good to see out there on the field,” said Almeida, who was not among the leaders after the first mile but steadily moved up. “I just saw my teammates, and I’m like, ‘I have to go catch them.

I can’t let them down.’”

SETH’S STAR CONTINUES TO RISE

Seth finished his freshman cross country season as an All-State runner placing 13th at the Class 4A state championships. In the first meet of his sophomore season, he showed how far he has progressed by beating Ponte Vedra’s Ross for the first time.

“I’ve looked up to him forever,” Seth said of Ross, who ran 16:04.9. “When I was in sixth grade and he was in eighth grade, he was the fastest. So it was really cool to race him today. He’s a great runner, and I think he’s going to have a big year.”

Halliday thinks the Bulldogs can have a very big year.

“This is definitely one of the

deeper teams we’ve had, and very young,” he said. “And I think we’ll just continue to see big improvements, not just out of those top five, but there’s about 20 of them doing some good stuff. It’s the first step. We’ll see in two weeks [at the Horse Park Invitational in Ocala], how we do with a little bigger competition, a few more teams. But we feel like we can hold our own.”

In the Spike and Spurs 3K middle school run, Imagine School At Town Center’s club team placed first for both boys and girls, while Indian Trails Middle School placed second in both. Mia Kopcikova of Imagine won the girls title in 12:13.6. Imagine’s Aidan Moylan won the boys title in 11:04.9.

GRIGORUK, FPC PLACE 3RD IN GIRLS RACE

Matanzas junior Peyton Cerasi had a strong start to the season on Friday, Aug. 21, with a 13th-place finish in the Elite Girls Division at the Cecil Field Summer Classic in Jacksonville.

Competing in a field of 340 top distance runners from Florida and Georgia, Cerasi navigated the crowded course to finish in 19:07.

Matanzas’ other runners competed in the Varsity B races. Noemi Malinowski placed 22nd in the Girls Varsity B race in 22:37. Rena Carlton was 48th in 23:37. Liam Yanasheski ran 20:54 in the Boys Varisty B race.

Father Lopez competed in the Jim Ryun Invite at Holloway Park in Lakeland.

The Green Wave’s girls team placed 15th with Lucy Fulton leading the way in 23:25 for 34th place. Liam Harman led the boys team with time of 20:05.

The FPC girls placed third at the Spikes and Spurs with 65 points. Ponte Vedra won the girls title with 37 points, while Oviedo Hagerty was second with 55 points. Seabreeze finished ninth.

Senior Ana Grigoruk led the Bulldogs with a third-place finish in 20:02.5. FPC freshman Avery Wisniewski placed fifth with a time of 20:47.0.

Ponte Vedra’s Piper Ross (19:39.7) and Savannah LaVasser (19:52.6) finished first and second.

“I’m a little disappointed because I came here expecting to go sub-20,” Grigoruk said.

“But I was close to hitting my goal, so I’m just trying to see the positive in it, continue on and improve throughout the season.”

“I knew those two girls from Ponte Vedra were going to be up there,” she said. “So I wanted to stay with them, but I kind of fell off. I tried to catch second place towards the end, but I think [LaVasser] had a pretty good kick.”

FPC’s Everly Mucciolo (21:40.8) placed 12th, Audrey Bowman (21:52.1) was 13th and Hailey Brennan (23:47.3) was 42nd.

Karly Rybicki led the Sandcrabs with a 46th-place finish in 24:08.4.

June 20, 1946 - August 12, 2026 We are saddened to announce the passing of Terry Schaack on August 12, 2026 at the age of 80. Terry was the youngest child of Theodore and Cecelia Schaack. He met his life-long high school sweetheart, Diana Pechota 1962. The summer of 1967 they we married. Eleven days later, he entered the US Army.

Terry was a Tet Offensive survivor and proud of his attachment to the 1st Calvary Airmobile Division Artillery unit. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Rifle Sharp Shooter 2021 he received the Air Assault Badge at Ft Hood, Texas during the 100th Anniversary of the 1st Cavalry Division.

1987 they relocated to Ormond Beach, where he worked at Jon Hall Honda for 24 years before retiring. He had many passions including restoring 50’s and 60’s cars, especially Mercury’s and Mustangs, and 50’s memorabilia.

1990 he joined the Daytona Beach Street Rods where he ran Gate 70 at the Turkey Run Car Show for 36 years.

Terry enjoyed working with his family on the show gate.

He was a lifetime member of Vietnam Veterans of America Daytona Beach Chapter 1048.

As part of the Vietnam Education Team he was finally able to tell his story of Vietnam to High School and Daytona State College students.

He was proud to be a Color Guard member and served as the bugler for memorials and special events. Terry was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3282 in Port Orange. He was a member and co-curator for the Vietnam room at the Veterans Museum and Education Center in Daytona Beach where he recreated pieces of military memorabilia. He was proud to have created the Vietnam Welcome Home Wall and a special tribute to K-9 dogs in Vietnam.

His biggest joys were his family. He looked forward to attending his grandsons sporting and school events, and to their annual summer vacations exploring military museums. He especially enjoyed showing them around Iowa. In 2017 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Gatlinburg.
