NEWS BRIEFS Deputies: Palm Coast man stalked woman, stole teddy bear with son’s ashes A Palm Coast man was arrested after allegedly stalking a former acquaintance, tracking her movements with GPS, stealing a teddy bear containing her son’s ashes and threatening to destroy it, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office said deputies began investigating after the victim reported that Justin Fountain, 31, whom she had met through a dating app, became increasingly controlling and aggressive after the relationship ended. Investiga-

tors said Fountain repeatedly tracked the woman’s location around Flagler County, stole the teddy bear containing her child’s ashes and sent her more than 100 text messages within hours after she asked him to stop contacting her.

Deputies said the victim told them Fountain later appeared uninvited at her workplace and, after she left, she discovered his vehicle in the parking lot of the hotel where she had been staying.

She fled to meet a friend at Culver’s, but investigators said Fountain followed her there as well.

The victim also reported receiving alerts that someone had accessed her social media accounts without permission. Investigators said Fountain then sent messages threatening her if she contacted law enforcement, including telling her she would be arrested on a warrant and warning, “I’m going to destroy

you.” He also allegedly texted that he had stolen the teddy bear containing her son’s ashes and would burn it if she continued ignoring him.

Using investigative techniques, deputies located Fountain traveling north on Interstate 95. During a traffic stop, they found the stolen teddy bear containing the child’s ashes inside his vehicle. The bear was later returned to the victim.

Deputies arrested Fountain on charges of aggravated stalking, extortion and hindering communication with law enforcement. The Flagler Beach Police Department also charged him with unauthorized installation of a tracking device and unauthorized access to an electronic device.

Eric Hoover Jr., 31, of Palm Coast, who was arrested by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office twice in 2025 following a narcotics-related investigation and a subsequent child exploitation investigation, has been convicted and sentenced.

On Aug. 5, Hoover pleaded guilty to 10 counts of possession of sexual performance by a child and pleaded no contest to possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia, and unlawful use of a two-way communication device. Following both pleas, Circuit Judge Dawn Nichols sentenced him to eight years in prison for the child sexual abuse material charges and five years in prison for the narcotics charges. The sentences will be served concurrently with each other, meaning a maximum sentence of eight years. He will also be required to register as a sex offender and will be on sex offender probation for five years after his release from prison.

Police arrested a 22-year-old man after he was reportedly found asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle that was stopped in the roadway and still in drive.

According to a Bunnell Police Department report, an officer responded to what was initially believed to be a crash.

Police determined there had been no crash but found the driver apparently unconscious behind the wheel. An officer performed a sternum rub to wake him, but the man briefly woke up before falling back asleep.

The man refused medical treatment and was later observed leaning against his vehicle for balance. Police said he was speaking rapidly, muttering and stuttering. He agreed to perform field sobriety exercises.

Volusia readies school zone traffic control devices ahead of first day of school As students prepare to return to classrooms next week, Volusia County Road and Bridge traffic signal maintenance crews are working behind the scenes to prepare the school zone traffic control devices that help keep thousands of students safe each school day.

In the weeks leading up to the start of the school year, crews inspect, program and maintain school zone flashers, beacons, and traffic signals to verify they are operating properly and activating at the correct times for each school’s schedule.

These devices alert motorists when reduced school zone speed limits are in effect, and help improve safety for students, parents, school staff, and other pedestrians traveling near schools. Crews also continue monitoring and servicing school zone equipment throughout the school year as schedules change, repairs become necessary, or improvements are identified.

After failing the exercises, the man was arrested and taken to the Flagler County Inmate Facility. While there, he reportedly said he was “tipsy.” Two breath samples registered 0.143 and 0.146.

During an inventory of the vehicle, police found an 18pack of Budweiser containing one can that was still cold to the touch. The vehicle was then towed.

FAMILY FEUD 6:56 p.m. — 100 block of Cloverdale Court, Ormond Beach Criminal mischief. An 18-year-old Ormond Beach man was arrested after he threw a rock at a window of a family member’s residence — which the young man did on purpose, to get the victim to call 911.

According to a police report, the victim arrived at his home and saw the 18-year-old sitting on a baby swing. When he was asked to get off, he refused. The victim told him to “go take a walk,” but the 18-year-old refused and told him to call the police. When the victim did not do so, the young man told the victim’s

Polling place change announced for three Daytona precincts Three Daytona Beach precincts will have a polling place change after a garbage truck damaged the main entrance of a local church last week.

Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis announced an Election Day polling place change for voters in Precincts 604, 622 and 635 due to the incident at the Daytona Beach Seventhday Adventist Church. The church posted on Facebook that the truck came onto their property to turn around, and drove under the church entrance overhang where it was not able to clear the beams.

The city building inspector deemed the main entrance as unsafe for use.

For the 2026 elections, affected voters will now vote at Christ Community Church, located at 329 N. Williamson Blvd. in Daytona Beach.

Notices will be mailed to impacted voters.

The new polling location is approximately 0.3 miles from the former location.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause,” Lewis said in a press release. “As soon as we learned about the issue at Daytona Beach Seventh-day Adventist Church, we worked with church representatives to identify the closest available location possible for affected voters. We want to thank Christ Community Church for opening their doors for the community.”

Election Day for the primary is on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

ANTISEMITIC SYMBOLS 4:44 p.m. — 400 block of Hammock Lane, Ormond Beach Criminal mischief. A local builder called police after two signs on a property he is developing for a landowner were spray painted with red swastikas.

The builder told officers that the signs, which contain his company name, were not damaged the day before.

The vandalism also included a circular figure with a line through it, according to an incident report. The damage was estimated at $200.

The builder, who said he is not associated with any religion, wished to pursue charges.

JULY 30

WHEN IT RAINS, IT POURS 6:38 p.m. — 1000 block of Justice Lane, Bunnell Preventing or obstructing extinguishment of fire. An inmate allegedly damaged a fire suppression sprinkler in his cell after becoming angry when detention deputies did not respond to him.

According to an arrest report, deputies responded to the jail after learning that an inmate had broken the fire suppression system in his cell. Surveillance footage showed the inmate standing near his cell door before moving toward the fire suppression sprinkler. Moments later, water could be seen spraying from the area of the sprinkler.

The inmate told deputies he had pressed a button in an attempt to get detention deputies’ attention. When no one responded, he became angry and wrapped his laundry bag around the sprinkler before intentionally pulling on it in an attempt to set it off or break it, according to the report.

Early voting underway At least three local races to be decided in Flagler County Primary Election.

Voter turnout for primary elections are historically lower that general elections. But this month’s primary is important, Flagler County Supervisor of Elections Kaiti Lenhart said, because at least three, and as many as six local races, will be decided on Aug. 18.

Early voting in the county began on Saturday, Aug. 8, and ends Saturday, Aug. 15 at five sites.

Registered Republicans and Democrats will be able to vote in the primary to decide their party’s candidates for several federal and state offices including Florida governor, U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative. Republican voters can also vote for party candidates in two county commission races.

All Flagler County voters will be able to vote in nonpartisan elections. Three of those races have two candidates vying for office. So those races will be decided on Aug. 18 — School Board District 1 between Cathy Moon and Jill Woolbright; School Board District 2 between incumbent Will Furry and Rob Wood; and Seventh Circuit Judge, Group 26, between Carleen Leffler and Jeanne Stratis.

A third School Board race — District 4 with Trevor Tucker, Ron Long and incumbent Christy Chong vying for the seat — could also be decided in the primary if one of the candidates receives more than 50% of the vote. If none

of them receives the majority of the vote, the top two votegetters will advance to a runoff in the Nov. 3 General Election.

Palm Coast voters have two City Council races on their ballots, both with more than two candidates. Antonio “Tony” Amaral Jr., Jeani Duarte and Jimmy Hengy are running for the District 2 seat.

Dylana “Dee” Galery, John Kvederis, Ramon Marrero and Darlene Shelley are running in District 4.

Ray Stevens has won the Palm Coast District 3 seat by virtue of being the only candidate running.

The average voter turnout in Florida for primary elections is less than 30%. Flagler County’s average is slightly higher but still under 30%, Lenhart said. In 2024, the county’s turnout was a little over 29% for the primary but over 83% (80,718 of 96,751 registered voters) for the General Election, which included the presidential election.

“Hopefully, this year we have a higher turnout based on the candidates on the ballot, our local offices, which are really important,” Lenhart said. “There are three races in this primary election that will be decided in August. So, if you skip the primary election, you’re skipping your ability to vote in those races in particular. And then there are three races that could be decided.”

Florida has a closed primary, so the Republican and Democratic ballots are different. All registered voters should have received a sample ballot in the mail, Lenhart said. A sample ballot can also be found at flaglerelections. gov.

Flagler County has primary races for U.S. Senator; U.S. House, District 6; Florida governor; state chief financial officer; and state agriculture commissioner. The Republican ballot has all of those contests plus two county commission races, which include only Republican candidates.

Greg Feldman and Palm Coast City Council member Theresa Pontieri are on the Republican ballot in District 2. Anna Jones, Drew Moss and incumbent Leann Pennington are on the ballot in District 4.

An independent candidate, Raymond Royer, will be on the November ballot in District 1 against the winner of the primary. Pontieri and Feldman have outspent their independent opponent by large amounts with Pontieri receiving $29,670 in contributions and Feldman receiving $20,670 compared to $5,060 by Royer.

Similarly, in District 4, the three candidates are on the Republican primary ballot only because Denise Calderon qualified as a write-in candidate, which means she won’t be on the November ballot, but, by Florida statute, space to write in the candidate’s name will be provided.

“I think there’s a shift and a trend towards early voting and voting by mail, and that you can see that statewide and in our county,” she said.

compare two elections. Even though you try to use historical data to predict turnout, it just seems that every election is different, and the turnout will reflect that.”

The Elections Office mailed out almost 15,000 vote-bymail ballots, Lenhart said. As of Aug. 11, 7,038 mail-in ballots have been returned. Mailin ballots must be received by 7 p.m. Aug. 18. In addition to mail, they can be returned to the Elections Office or to a dropbox at a voting site during polling hours. The dropboxes are monitored by Elections Office employees, Lenhart said.

The five early voting sites are the Flagler County Public Library Palm Coast branch, the Palm Coast Community Center, the Flagler County Elections Office, the Southern Recreation Center and the Wickline Senior Center in Flagler Beach.

“The library tends to be the most popular, because I think that a lot of people have always voted there, although it is probably the smallest space now, as far as square footage, so wait times there are a bit higher, just because we can’t add any any more booths.”

Lenhart said.

The Elections Office’s renovation has recently been completed, with the voting area there doubling in size. The Flagler Beach site was moved to the Wickline Senior Center, which is closer to the downtown area.

Judge rules Palm Coast impact fee Removed campaign signs spark debate at City Council meeting increases violate state law Circuit judge sides with builders on SB 180 claim as city considers an appeal.

The Flagler Home Builders Association got a favorable ruling from a circuit judge in its lawsuit against Palm Coast’s 2025 impact fee hikes, an early win in a case that is not over yet.

Circuit Judge Sandra Upchurch granted the FHBA’s motion for summary judgment on its Senate Bill 180 claim, finding the city’s increased impact fees constitute a land development regulation that is more burdensome than what was previously in place.

FHBA Executive Officer Annamaria Long said the ruling addresses the first portion of the association’s lawsuit.

Other claims challenging how the fees were calculated under the Florida Impact Fee Act remain pending.

“I’m clearly very pleased with the judge’s decision,” Long said. “It’s not so much a win or lose sort of feeling so much as it’s the judge following the law.”

Long said the ruling is the first step toward getting the fees corrected and ultimately ensuring Palm Coast’s impact fees are both accurate and legal.

The dispute goes all the way back to 2025, when Palm Coast raised its fire, parks and transportation impact fees. The three fees combined increased by $11,500 for a single-family home. At that time, the city justified the increase by say-

ing rapid growth and rising infrastructure costs created the “extraordinary circumstances” necessary under state law to justify increases beyond the normal statutory limits.

The city said in a statement following Upchurch’s ruling that it disagrees with the decision and is reviewing its legal options, including an appeal. The city also said the ruling does not immediately change its current impact fee schedule.

Vice Mayor Theresa Carli Pontieri said she supports an appeal.

“I think we did everything right,” Pontieri said. “We got the studies that we needed to get. We showed that we have incurred an extreme amount of growth in a short period of time, that the costs of improvements have skyrocketed.”

Pontieri said her larger concern is ensuring existing residents are not left responsible for the infrastructure costs created by new development.

“We’re seeing the cost of

growth falling on the shoulders of our current residents,” she said. “That’s not how growth and development should operate.”

Long emphasized that the FHBA does not oppose impact fees themselves. The organization previously supported the city’s utility impact fee increase because, she said, it complied with state law.

“We are not against impact fees,” Long said. “If it’s legal and it’s accurate, we’re good.”

Long said litigation was not the association’s first choice and that the FHBA attempted to resolve its concerns with city staff and the City Council before filing suit.

“We never wanted to be here, but we are,” Long said.

“So we’re going to continue this fight because it is a fight for housing affordability for all.”

A written order is expected soon. The remaining claims in the lawsuit are still pending, and the city has not yet made a final decision on whether it will appeal.

Palm Coast City Council members called for clearer communication and consistent enforcement of the city’s sign rules Tuesday after concerns were raised about campaign signs being removed from early voting locations.

The discussion began during public comment at the council’s Aug. 11 meeting, when resident and city council candidate Jeani Duarte said candidate signs had been removed from polling locations and argued the practice reduced candidates’ visibility to voters. Duarte said her signs at the Palm Coast library had been hidden behind a trash can and those at the elections office had been retrieved from a closed garage.

“This is a breach of trust,” Duarte said. “Election interference reduces visibility and interest and violates citizens’ rights to be informed.”

The issue prompted a lengthy council discussion over where campaign signs can legally be placed, whether enforcement should be more lenient during elections and how the city can ensure candidates are operating under the same rules.

Ci ty M a n a ge r M ike McGlothlin said the city’s concern centered on complying with both the 150-foot buffer around polling locations and restrictions involving the right of way.

“So the one particular problem here, it seemed like at the rec center where we have the 150 foot buffer that we need to retain as well as the rightof-way issue,” McGlothlin said. “So city staff is working within the guidance that has been given to him by council.”

Councilman Dave Sullivan said he had received similar complaints and described what he understood to be the central issue for candidates.

“My understanding is the problem is you can have the signs with you while you’re

there and even stick them in the ground, but when you leave, they’re saying you have to remove them,” Sullivan said. “And I think that’s the issue. Can they be left in place when you’re not there?”

Councilman Charles Gambaro said he believed code enforcement should be lenient during the election period to allow candidates to display their signs. He also pointed to signs being removed at the Government Services Building and library, which are county properties.

“I think from our perspective, we want to encourage voting right now,” Gambaro said. “The turnout’s not that great.”

Vice Mayor Theresa Carli Pontieri cautioned that the city could create legal problems if it treated political signs differently from other signs restricted by city code.

“We can’t allow campaign signs, but not allow Realtor signs,” Pontieri said. “We can’t pick and choose when we’re going to enforce the law. That’s literally unconstitutional.”

Pontieri said the priority should instead be making sure the rules are clearly communicated and enforced equally.

“If everybody is playing on with the same rule book, the same set of rules, and it’s being enforced equally, then everybody has, you know, you’re on equal playing field,” she said.

Councilman Ty Miller said the physical layout of the Community Center makes compliance difficult because the 150-foot polling-place buffer essentially overlaps with the easement.

“With the community center, just the design, the physical footprint is what lends to some difficulty there because essentially the 150 overlaps with the easement, so there’s no legal place to put it anywhere,” Miller said.

Miller also said changing rules and requiring candidates to remain with their signs can create a significant burden, particularly for those without large campaign organizations.

“My team is me in a truck driving to your house to bring you a sign,” he said. “And so driving to four or five different early voting locations to put signs in the ground and then three hours later starting that whole trek again to pick them up. It’s difficult. It’s hard.”

Miller said consistency would help candidates understand what is expected of them and expressed concern that overly restrictive rules could discourage people from running for office.

“I don’t want to just discourage people from even trying because we’re saying you can’t have your signs there unless you’re standing there with them,” Miller said.

McGlothlin later summarized the direction he was hearing from council as enforcing the ordinance as written while conducting another educational push to make the rules clear to candidates.

As the council worked toward a consensus, Mayor Mike Norris expressed frustration with political signs more broadly.

“I’d like in America, I’d like to get rid of political signs altogether,” Norris said. “And this year, it’s even worse than in the past because they’re popping up all over the place.”

The council ultimately agreed that the city should follow its existing ordinance and not allow campaign signs in prohibited easement areas.

“Follow the ordinance,” Pontieri said.

“Okay, so no signs in the easement,” Norris responded.

Miller requested that the city’s direction be communicated to all candidates through the Supervisor of Elections Office.

Fine made the announcement during a press conference at Beverly Beach Town Hall, where Beverly Beach Mayor Stephen Emmett and other local officials joined him.

The new funding is separate from $8.8 million announced last August, Fine said.

“I want to be clear,” Fine said. “We did have a press conference about 11 months ago when we announced $8.8 million last August in funding to the county for beach renourishment. That is not $8.8 million of that $13.5 million. That was last year. This year we’re announcing $13.5 million.”

during his first 15 months in Congress. In addition to the

beach funding, Fine pointed to money for the Flagler Executive Airport, Flagler Beach Fishing Pier, emergency protective measures in Flagler Beach, Bunnell’s wastewater treatment facility and environmental infrastructure.

“You add that together, and that is secured in the 15 months I have been in Congress — $50 million just for Flagler County,” Fine said.

Fine represents Florida’s Sixth Congressional District, which includes six counties.

He said coastal issues have been a priority for him since he was first elected to the Florida Legislature in 2016.

“Beach issues are important to me,” Fine said. “I’ve always represented beachside communities, and the issues relating to beach renourishment and beach erosion plague all parts of the state.”

Emmett welcomed Fine to Beverly Beach by hugging the congressman, thanking him for helping secure federal funding for Flagler County.

“When I look at that board with that money that he’s gotten this county, which

we’re all going to be sharing in for that beach restoration, which is an ever-ending type of deal,” Emmett said.

The mayor then spoke about the erosion the small coastal community has witnessed over the years.

“I’ve watched this beach go, go in stages,” Emmett said.

“The campground next door to us has 1,500 feet of seawall that is totally trashed. It was there for 40 years.”

Emmett said the damage illustrates the difficulty coastal communities face in trying to protect themselves from erosion and storms.

“You can’t mess with Mother Nature,” Emmett said.

“It’s going to do what Mother Nature does.”

Fine said protecting Florida’s water and coastline is critical to maintaining what attracts people to the state in the first place.

“What makes Florida different is our water,” Fine said.

“Whether it’s the beach, whether it’s the Intracoastal, whether it’s our springs, the St. Johns — that’s what makes Florida different from many of these other places.”

But Fine acknowledged that federal funding alone will not provide a permanent solution to Flagler County’s erosion problems. He said communities will ultimately have to confront larger questions about how to protect their coastlines sustainably.

“You can never fully restore the beaches when you rely on seawalls,” Fine said. “Everything that we’re doing, to some degree, is putting BandAids on a problem. The solution to the problem is a much bigger one that allows people to live and enjoy our beaches, but in a long-term sustainable way.”

Recent cruelty cases spur county to review animal control laws

Flagler County narrows county administrator search to four

Tougher animal protections, enforcement and a 10-acre donation for a future shelter.

Flagler County commissioners are calling for another look at the county’s animal cruelty laws and animal control system as officials prepare for an Aug. 27 joint workshop with the Palm Coast City Council.

This discussion arose during the County Commission’s Aug. 3 meeting, following residents’ concerns regarding recent animal cruelty cases and the adequacy of current enforcement measures.

Among the cases cited during public comment were dogs allegedly kept in extreme heat without adequate food, water or air conditioning, including two Labrador retrievers found dead in a storage unit.

Another recent case involved a mother dog and eight puppies found inside a hot garage.

Commission Chair Leann Pennington said the recent cases warranted reviewing the county’s animal abuse ordinances to determine whether changes are needed.

“There have been a lot of events happening with animals,” Pennington said. “I was wondering if the board, along with the workshop that we’re going to do, wanted to give consensus for legal to go back and look at our animal abuse ordinances and make sure that they are ... strong enough.”

tethering regulations and other protections involving heat and access to water.

She said the goal should be to ensure law enforcement has “all the tools in the toolbox” to respond to animal cruelty cases.

Commissioner Kim Carney said the discussion needs to extend beyond plans for a new animal shelter and to address how animal control itself operates.

“The shelter itself and the financing and the donation, it’s all wonderful,” Carney said. “But the animal control issue needs to be resolved.”

Carney said she wants the Sheriff’s Office represented at the Aug. 27 workshop to help commissioners understand possible alternatives for animal control enforcement.

“I believe that the sheriff should give us some background because we’re not the only county that runs animal control or not,” she said.

Carney said since the donation is in Flagler County, commissioners need a comprehensive plan for a future shelter.

“We have to know fully

what we’re doing,” she said.

“We have to have a plan for what we’re doing, and animal control, without a doubt, has to be part of it. This is just getting out of control.”

The shelter project received a significant boost when a member of the Animal Sheltering Task Force told commissioners that an anonymous donor has offered 10 acres along a major thoroughfare for the project. County staff has developed a detailed process outlining the approvals needed to allow the property to be used for the shelter.

C o m m i s s i o n e rs also expressed concern about recent staffing changes to Palm Coast’s animal control operation. Pennington said her understanding was that some employees crosstrained in animal control had been let go, while another employee resigned, and the city would need additional staffing if it takes on a larger animal control role.

The city and county are tentatively scheduled to meet Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m. for a joint workshop on the shelter and animal control. Pennington said she hopes the meeting will allow officials to make some of the major decisions that remain unresolved.

Commissioner Greg Hansen also supported another review of the county’s regulations, particularly its tethering provisions.

“We did quite a bit of research when we enacted that animal ordinance,” Hansen said. “But I agree. Maybe we should go back and look at the tethering part of it.”

The commission asked legal staff take another look at the regulations ahead of the continuing discussions.

The Flagler County Commission spent all of Monday afternoon interviewing candidates for county administrator, narrowing a field of six candidates to four by the end of the meeting.

Commissioners interviewed Richard Reade, Tracy Miller, Thomas Hutka, Shawn Boatright, Stanley Hawthorne and Aaron Van Kleeck during an Aug. 10 workshop that began at 1 p.m. Each candidate was scheduled for a 45-minute interview.

Following the interviews, commissioners moved into a special meeting to determine who would advance to the next stage of the search.

The four candidates moving forward are Shawn Boatright, Tracy Miller, Richard Reade and Aaron Van Kleeck.

The clear leader so far is Boatright, based on commissioners’ votes; there was a three-way tie among Miller, Reade and Van Kleeck.

Commission Chair Leann Pennington proposed retain-

ing four candidates in the process.

“I suspect that between timing and everything else, we may lose more candidates and I would prefer to continue on,” she said.

The other commissioners agreed.

The search initially drew 30 applications.

The four finalists bring a range of local government experience.

Boatright has served as county administrator and deputy county administrator in Camden County, Georgia, and briefly as assistant county manager in Glynn County.

Miller’s Florida government experience includes assistant city manager positions in Bartow and Oldsmar along with strategic management work for Sarasota County.

Reade has served in several Florida local government leadership positions, including deputy county administrator in Okeechobee County and town manager of Lake Park.

Van Kleeck has more than 20 years of experience with Volusia County and currently serves as its emergency services director, overseeing more than 500 employees and

an operating budget exceeding $100 million.

To help commissioners and the public understand how each candidate would handle issues, County Attorney Michael Rodriguez suggested giving candidates scenarios that reflect challenges they might face as county administrator.

Pennington urged commissioners not to rush the process.

“We need to get it right,” she said, adding that commissioners should have “really good, robust conversations” with the finalists before making a decision.

Commissioners settled on Sept. 3 and Sept. 4 for the next stage of the process. The current plan calls for one-onone interviews on Sept. 3, followed by a public interview session on Sept. 4 and a special meeting at which commissioners could select their preferred candidate.

The board’s original recruitment schedule had contemplated making a selection in late August. Still, commissioners agreed additional time was warranted to accommodate schedules and give the finalists time to make travel arrangements.

That’s how he described it to a room full of staff members, fellow residents and community leaders during a legislative appropriation

The center, at 405 White St., Daytona Beach, is “the only comprehensive blind services complex in the United States,” according to its website.

Funds that will help the center continue to help people like Jannssen, who lost his sight a year and a half ago.

“Before that, I was an artist,” he said. “... Then suddenly everything was gone, and then I just felt like I died, and I was in between worlds or something because everybody else could hear me or see me, but I couldn’t see anybody else.”

The Conklin Davis Center has given him hope, he said.

It’s also helped him regain technology skills so he can communicate.

“We have so many stories like that, that make it worth everything that we do here, and why this donation from the state is so helpful,” Board Chair Nancy Epps said.

Also present at the ceremony was Daytona Beach City Commissioner Ken Strickland, who thanked Wright for the state’s contribution.

“This is a very worthwhile facility, and we have a lot of people that don’t understand the services that are provided with this facility and other facilities that we have here in our city, and this will help tremendously going forward with keeping this center alive and well for those who need it,” Strickland said.

The Conklin Davis Center seeks to continue to grow.

With only 16 dorms, the center has a waiting list of people in need of their programs, Epps said.

David shared a few initiatives the center is working toward, including the addition of a student marketing group to help local businesses.

Citing productive talks, Avalon Park Daytona Beach has voluntarily dismissed a complaint it had filed against the cities of Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach regarding which municipality will provide utilities to the development.

On Aug. 6, Avalon Park Daytona Beach filed a notice of voluntary dismissal without prejudice of its complaint filed in December 2024 in the Circuit Court of the Seventh Judicial Circuit. According to a news release, the development group states that this follows “several weeks of productive collaboration between the parties.”

“Avalon Park Group has always believed that the best outcomes happen when public and private partners work together,” said Beat Kahli, president and CEO of Avalon Park Group in the news release. “We are encouraged by the collaboration over the past several weeks and appreciate the willingness of both cities to continue working with us toward a solution that benefits the entire region.”

The lawsuit sought the court to declare Ormond Beach unable to provide utilities to Avalon Park Daytona Beach, and grant them the right to obtain water and wastewater services from Daytona Beach.

Ormond Beach City Attorney Randy Hayes said in an email to the Observer that though the lawsuit has been

dismissed — without prejudice, meaning Avalon Park could refile a lawsuit — Daytona Beach’s cross-claim against Ormond has not been dismissed.

The case is scheduled for trial in September, Hayes said.

In the news release, Avalon Park Group thanked mediator Terry White and the utility departments of both cities.

“Their efforts have helped move the discussion forward in a constructive way and support the shared goal of reaching a win-win-win solution for Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach, Avalon Park Daytona Beach and, most importantly, the taxpayers,” the news release states.

While the lawsuit in the circuit court has been dismissed, the federal lawsuit has not. On Aug. 5, Avalon Park Daytona asked the U.S. District Court Middle District of Florida to deny Ormond Beach’s motion to dismiss the federal lawsuit, which alleges a federal takings claim.

The lawsuit, filed in March, states that Ormond’s regulatory actions are meant to prevent any development by Avalon Park.

Shortly after the lawsuit was filed, the Ormond Beach City Commission rejected a $2.3 million settlement offer, which would have partially terminated a 2006 interlocal agreement that gives the city the right to provide water and wastewater services as a wholesale rate to Avalon Park Daytona Beach.

Most recently in May, the Daytona Beach City Commission approved a rezoning of 2,760 acres for Avalon Park Daytona Beach, which will allow the construction of over 8,800 new homes.

A back-to-school poem I learned two things from this exchange. First: It’s impossible to please an 8-year-old boy. Second: Elementary school teachers really do care about making their students feel loved.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“It’s a poem,” he moaned.

Aug. 3, 2026 The other day, after I jokingly said something to keep one of my children humble, I felt a gentle rebuke for not doing the opposite. Why not spend more time and energy to build my children’s self esteem even more?

One of my spiritual guides has always been Neal A. Maxwell, who once taught: “We underestimate how genuinely and frequently our children want to please us.”

When I go through trials, I find great comfort in knowing that at least a few people who love me will be there to lift me up, even if I brought the trial upon myself. Do my children know that I will always be that person for them? That no matter what they do, I will always find reasons to be proud of them?

Aug. 7, 2026 … the accused party almost always gets defensive.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dennie’s conclusion only partially correct Dear Editor: Jearlyn Dennie’s essay starts from solid ground.

As a pastor who was the first Black woman to chair a Republican Executive Committee in Florida, she shares her experience of being told to “keep religion out of politics” once her faith became clear in a political role. She’s correct that nothing in the Constitution mandates that trade-off.

A person does not lose the right to hold office, vote according to her conscience, or speak at a School Board meeting just because she is also a person of faith. This is not a controversial claim.

It isn’t even the claim most people challenge when discussing “separation of church and state.”

That’s where the essay’s argument encounters issues — not in what it defends, but in what it quietly generalizes into. Dennie is correct that the phrase “separation of church and state” does not appear in the Constitution. She is also right that the phrase comes from Jefferson’s 1802 letter assuring the Danbury Baptists that the government would not interfere with their worship.

However, she uses that history to conclude that the First Amendment’s main purpose was to protect the church from government control, not to protect the government from religious influence. This conclusion is only partially correct, and the part that is missing actually generates most realworld church-state disputes.

The religion clause has two parts, written together for a reason: the government cannot prohibit free exercise, and it also cannot make a law that respects an establishment of religion. The second part is not just a footnote. It is the reason a school district cannot mandate prayer, a courthouse cannot require witnesses to swear on one faith’s text and a legislature cannot legislate one denomination’s doctrine as binding on everyone, including citizens of other faiths or none. That protection is not directed at pastors serving in office. It is aimed at preventing the government from being used to decide questions of conscience for people who never agreed to settle them that way.

Dennie’s essay does not actually argue against that principle. This is important because it means the piece addresses an objection that no serious person is raising.

She clearly states that she isn’t asking the government to preach her faith and that she does not expect everyone to share her beliefs. This is fine, as nearly everyone who discusses church-state separation feels the same way.

The disagreement was never about whether a pastor can run for office or speak from her beliefs. It concerns the difference between a citizen’s faith influencing how

she votes or governs, which is free exercise, and the government adopting that citizen’s theology as law applicable to people who reject it, which is establishment. These are different actions, and confusing criticism of the second with hostility toward the first allows the essay to claim a much larger victory than its argument actually supports.

There is also a smaller detail worth mentioning: the “keep religion out of politics” comment she describes came from individuals, not from the government.

This was a private citizen’s opinion, protected speech responding to her protected speech — not a violation of the First Amendment, and not proof that the “government” is targeting anyone’s faith. Being criticized for how you express your beliefs in public life is not the same as being constitutionally silenced. Equating the two allows the essay to shift from a personal grievance to a constitutional argument that it has not actually demonstrated.

None of this means faith has no place in public life.

It clearly does, and Dennie is right that the Constitution never asked her to hide hers. However, defending a citizen’s right to be openly religious while serving the public is a different task than defending the government’s right to enforce one faith’s answers for everyone. An essay that only argues the first should not be read as having settled the second.

Too often voters are left in the dark Dear Editor: I mostly agree with the Observer’s decision to no longer endorse political candidates. But I also agree in part with the letter writer who was disappointed that those endorsements have stopped.

The writer rightfully pointed out that there remains a void in fully vetting candidates with too much reliance on FlaglerLive, as a one-man band, to do the bulk of important in-depth research and reporting. Also, as the writer suggested, an Observer endorsement could integrate various candidates’ positions and offer an overview that voters cannot easily find elsewhere.

Too often, come election time, our several local news sources do little more than slip a soapbox under the candidates’ feet with advanced questions (which they should never have) and call that an interview, and do so with few or no followup questions and no factchecking. We should not rely on softball questions and the simple regurgitation of selfpromoting campaign talking points to guide our voting judgment.

Voters should be armed with as close to everything

(the good, the bad and the ugly) as possible to make an educated decision and not simply vote for candidates with the most mailbox flyers and biggest yard signs.

Obviously, to include investigative journalism as a component within the Observer requires staffing and hence cost, the will to do so, as well as a bit of a shift in the paper’s paradigm. So, as the letter writer implied, we remain for now reliant on some “letters to the editor,” occasional guest editorials (fact-checked or not), and the Observer will remain our non-partisan, friendly hometown newspaper. And as the writer indicated, that’s just fine. It serves us very well in that regard.

But, our local electorate, being at times left a bit in the dark on important background particulars, can be left on their own to become armchair detectives.

With vast A.I. and database resources, that’s not that difficult. With a bit of effort, delve into a candidate’s resume, look at campaign donations and expenditures, personal financial disclosures, court records, etc. Pay little or no attention to those mailbox political flyers, and certainly e-mail candidates any tough questions. And consider the lack of a reply a total deal breaker.

Noticing this pattern has helped make it easier for me to stop being an accuser. It’s not so easy to stop getting defensive when I’m accused.

TROUBLING OF THE WATER

Aug. 9, 2026 As I approached a pond this morning, I unknowingly startled a double crested cormorant, and it dove under the water.

I was curious: How long can it stay under? How far can it swim? I waited.

And then it appeared again, that long dark neck, about 50 feet away. It dove again, and the water was calm.

Later, I was keenly aware of all the troublings of the water. Is this one caused by

decade or so.

Instead of promoting LGBTQ lifestyles to children, we should be focused on the history of our country and what made us the greatest country this world has ever known. I ask many of the young people I come in contact with around Flagler County if they are familiar with our Bill of Rights and Constitution. It is heartbreaking to hear how many are not knowledgeable of these two critical documents.

Instead, they are being offered pornographic materials in their libraries. I applaud Jill Woolbright for standing up to this when she was a member of our School Board. The only objection I hear about her as she is running again is, “Oh, she wants to ban books.” That is so ridiculous. Sure, she didn’t think the material in “All Boys Aren’t Blue” by George M. Johnson was appropriate for school children. As a parent, if you think this is appropriate reading material for your children, maybe you are the problem.

I read with interest Colleen Conklin’s article in the Observer this week. I attended many of those School Board meetings she described as confrontational, blaming it on political performance. What it was was a couple of the School Board members very concerned about what your children were being taught and allowed to read.

If you care about your child’s real education, let’s not elect school board members who are OK with what the woke culture is trying to do to your children. Let’s give them the best opportunity to live the American dream.

Dear Editor: When religious ideology and partisan politics appear before a school board, that’s a problem. And that’s the case with Flagler County School Board member and current board candidate Will Furry when he recently recommended the inclusion of a controversial anti-abortion video in school curriculum.

The video, promoted by a pro-life activist who was “inspired by the Holy Spirit” and “guided by faith” as the inspiration for her activism, presents disputed medical claims. Live Action, the group behind the video production, has been barred from social media platforms for the spread of conspiracy theories and misinformation, doctored videos and the display of sensationalized content.

The source of this video speaks to its intent. It’s politically and religiously charged and only succeeds in creating controversy and divisiveness in a school board that has more than its share

Paul Renner is best choice for governor Dear Editor: As a Republican, the biggest mistakes in this gubernatorial election are Trump jumping in with the wrong candidate, the Republican Party of Florida refusing to sponsor any debates, and Gov. He knows. He has mentioned him several times and told you what they have accomplished together. One name, Paul Renner.

never heard DeSantis praise anything he was doing. Collins doesn’t want to admit he supports the data centers, but when forced will tell you he believes local governments should make that decision. He surely must know that is not happening.

He isn’t bothering to campaign in my county. He either believes it to be locked up, or believes he doesn’t need to do that. And neither do the others, except for Paul Renner. Most people have no idea who Bobby Williams is.

Then there is James Fishback, busy leveling accusations at others.

Walking precincts for Paul Renner we are hearing the same comments we heard when DeSantis first ran for Governor here: “Never heard of him. Who is he?”

Many who have lived here for years have no idea who this amazing man is. Paul Renner is a 20-year Navy combat veteran and one of the most remarkable Speakers of the House in the state’s history, right behind Marco Rubio.

He was the architect of the DeSantis Freedom Agenda and passed it in the Florida House, possibly making it the most historic legislative session in state history. Freedom Agenda, the Free State of Florida. Get it? Now you know why I am worried.

The first day of school on Monday, Aug. 10, began before 5 a.m. for Flagler Schools Superintendent LaShakia Moore and district department leaders. The group visited transportation before the first buses and vans pulled out to pick up students.

Before Day 1 of the school year was over, the group visited all nine district schools; plus charter school Imagine School at Town Center; and the programs at the district’s Engagement Center at the old county courthouse.

Moore, Human Resources Chief Joshua Walker, Chief of Operational Services Lauren Johnston, Special Projects Coordinator Marcus Sanfilippo, Communications Coordinator Don Foley and all four School Board members manned car rider and bus rider lines and toured classrooms.

They assisted kindergartners who were eating lunch in the cafeteria for the first time, helped sixth graders who were walking the halls and changing classes for the first time and assisted middle and high school kids navigating their new schedules.

“Our school leaders feel confident about the year ahead,” she said. “Our students have been happy and smiling. And typically on the first day you see some tears in kinder or VPK, but we have not seen that, and so I think families had some great conversations with their child about them coming back for them at the end of the day.”

One of their last stops at Rymfire was a blended volunteer prekindergarten classroom led by Deia Schermerhorn.

“It’s blended learning with some students with disabilities,” Rymfire Principal Travis Lee explained. “A goal for our district is to be inclusive. We want to make sure all of our students get the same education. It may be presented a little different, but it’s the same standard.”

“To hear their excitement about finding employment at the end of the year,” Moore said, “that was very nice to to hear them talk about the things that they like, and things that they enjoy doing, but also what they’re looking forward to as we move throughout the year.”

FOCUS ON FAITH St. Mark by the Sea Lutheran Church marks two major milestones St. Mark by the Sea Lutheran Church celebrated two significant events on Sunday, July 26, highlighting both its history and a heartfelt farewell.

The Rev. Pedro Suarez, Bishop of the Florida–Bahamas Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, dedicated a memorial rock and plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of St. Mark’s establishment in May 1974. The church also holds the distinction of being the first worship building in Palm Coast, with its inaugural service held on July 4, 1976.

Bishop Suarez and his wife, Deacon Aura Suarez, also presided over the final service of Pastor Vince Iocona, the congregation’s shepherd who has served the church for nearly 11 years.

Following the worship service, the congregation hosted a retirement luncheon honoring Pastor Vince and his wife, Cindy. A total of 165 members and guests attended the celebration.

FPC IB on upward trend, as 84% earn certificates this year FPC’s IB exam scores have risen significantly over the past three years, AP Mandy Kraverotis said.

Flagler Palm Coast’s 2026 International Baccalaureate class received its IB exam scores last month. The result was one of the most successful IB Diploma rates in school history.

A total of 43 IB seniors, representing 84% of the class,

earned their IB Diplomas.

That is significantly higher than in recent years, Assistant Principal Mandy Kraverotis said. It is one of the highest in program history, said Phil DeAusutino, the school’s IB guidance counselor, who has been involved in the program at FPC since day 1.

“We are so excited about our students’ IB results,” Kraverotis said. “They are a testament to the dedication, perseverance and hard work of all of our students and faculty members.”

In addition to the program’s rigorous coursework and exams, IB students complete several independent proj-

ects that count toward their diploma score including the Extended Essay and the Community, Action and Service Project.

“These projects, coupled with the mentorship from their IB faculty sponsors, truly make the International Baccalaureate Program a unique experience that leaves students poised for college and career success,” Kraverotis said.

To earn the IB Diploma, students must complete all core components and score at least 24 points on the IB exams with at least 12 points coming from Higher Level (HL) twoyear courses and at least nine

points coming from Standard Level (SL) one-year courses.

Students must test in all curricular areas: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences and Mathematics.

“In both SL and HL courses, all of FPC’s IB exam rates have risen significantly over the past three years, bouncing back from COVID-era scores,” Kraverotis said. “Our teachers have adapted to curriculum and exam changes in many of these courses.”

Kraverotis said they are especially proud of the teachers in four courses where FPC exam results exceeded

IB world averages: Literature (Daniela Mastropierro and Concetta Lee), History of the Americas (James Hackett and Steve Von Glahn), Sports and Exercise Science (Jamie Machado) and Math Applications and Interpretation (Dana Champion).

Flagler Palm Coast Activities Director Evana Fretterd had wanted for several years to implement the Boomerang

Project’s Link Crew program at FPC. Last year, Fretterd and FPC graduation coach David Halliday got the program off the ground.

The school held its second annual Link Up with FPC day on Aug. 6. The event is a freshman orientation in which incoming freshmen are paired with the school’s Link Crew Leaders — 60 incoming juniors and seniors who will serve as mentors to the freshmen for the entire school year.

On Link Up day, freshmen arrived at the school at 11:45 a.m. They were divided into teams, each led by two Link Crew Leaders along with faculty members. The leaders led the freshmen in activities and games and themed tours of the school.

During the day and throughout the school year, the upperclassmen provide advice to the younger students that resonate more coming from peers than from adults, Fretterd said.

“The leaders tell them everything they wished somebody had told them when they were freshmen, like, ‘Don’t be afraid to try new things even if they’re hard; don’t be afraid of failure, because success comes from failure; don’t procrastinate; and freshman year matters,’” Fetterd said.

“These are things every ninth grader should know.”

At 3:30 p.m. of Link Up day, the parents, who had dropped off their freshmen in the morning, returned to school for a seminar in the auditorium with administration and guidance counselors. At 4 p.m., the parents and their

freshmen joined up to walk the halls and then finish the day’s activities in the 100 gym for the Athletics and Clubs Rush.

The rush is also student-led

Furyk and Friends tournament at Sculptures in Ormond’s downtown Hammock Beach to aid local charities to remain through December Hammock Beach Golf Resort and Spa will host a PGA Tour Champions event in October.

The Constellation Furyk and Friends Golf tournament, a PGA Tour Champions event, will be held in Flagler County at the Hammock Beach Golf Resort & Spa from Oct. 5-11.

The resort hosted a media day on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to discuss the move to Flagler County, the upcoming event and the community outreach as a result of the funds raised from the event.

“I think what we’re trying to share today is just how excited we are to be here at Hammock Golf Resort and Spa,” said Ryder Williamson, partnerships manager at the Jim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation.

“This is all for charity. It’s our main mission.”

Williamson said that, since launching the tournament in 2021, the foundation — whic h is run by pro golfer Jim Furyk and his wife, Tabitha — has raised about $1 million a year for local charities. Last year, the funds supported over 50 organizations and helped thousands of children and families in Northern Florida.

“I feel like we all come together for a common goal and that is to help others,” said Tabitha Furyk, tournament founder and philanthropist. “This tournament is truly about having a great time. There’s world class golfers. Some people say it’s like an adult Spring Break. But at

the end of the day, all of these funds are going towards charity and we’re making a difference in people’s lives.”

She emphasized that they are not leaving the Jacksonville charities behind. Instead, they want to expand their footprint into Flagler County.

Organizations like the Flagler Education County Foundation and Ormond Beachbased charity Provision Packs, which provides meals to children in need, have already been recipients of the foundation. Jim and Tabitha Furyk presented a check for $30,000 to Provision Packs at the media day event.

“Feeding kids has always been a passion of ours,” Tabitha Furyk said. “We’re going to feed 100 additional kids that were not being fed otherwise. That’s going to grow to 270 kids in the 26-27 school year.”

Jim Furyk, who won 17 PGA tour events including a major victory at the U.S. Open in 2003 and has multiple PGA Tour champions wins, is excited about the move to The Hammock Beach Golf Resort and Spa. “It’s an amazing golf

course,” Jim Furyk said. “Of all the golf I’ve played and all of the travels I’ve had; if you look at the state of Florida, this resort, this golf course, especially the 9th and 18th hole [are special]. I’ll put the 9th hole up as one of the best holes in the state of Florida.”

The tournament committee will be doing an extensive set up for two weeks prior to the tournament to create an exciting, socially interactive atmosphere. Typical attendance to this event is in the thousands.

The boardwalk is the most robust fan zone that you’ve ever seen,” Tournament Director Adam Renfroe said.

“We’ll have video boards to watch golf and watch football. There’s going to be a golf simulator. We’re going to have a concert stage right there on the boardwalk by the 18th hole.”

All Friday event tickets include an evening concert by country music singer and songwriter Billy Courington.

Complimentary access will be given to youth age 17 and under, college students and members of the military.

The tournament team is hoping it will draw a large crowd, including past participants from St. Johns and Duval counties, as well as new attendees from Flagler and Volusia counties.

“The players like nothing more than to play in front of 10,000 people,” Jim Furyk said. “I think it’s going to set up great. It’s going to look wonderful on television, but more importantly I think our guys are going to love the golf course.”

The Ormond Beach Arts District had originally scheduled a six-month stay ending in June for the exhibit of life-sized, life-like sculptures

by Seward Johnson, but now will host the pieces through December.

The 12 sculptures are the work of world-renowned American artist, Seward Johnson (1930-2020). Johnson’s sculptures have been displayed in public spaces around the world, including Times Square, Palm Springs, Rome, Australia, and Venice and are included in numerous private and public collections

“This is our second set of Johnson sculptures,” said Judith Stein, the Arts District’s Vice President. “The first group was in residence in 2025 and was such a success, we knew we had to bring more. Now we are delighted to be able to keep them here in Ormond Beach for an additional six months.”

The pieces are located on both public and private property along the Granada Boulevard corridor from A1A to US 1and all are accessible to the public. Stroll along Granada Boulevard or venture into the City’s riverfront parks and you’ll find boys flying kites, dancers, families, Einstein riding a bicycle, and the Mona Lisa.

The realism of the exhibit, and the fact that the public can get so close to the sculptures and interact with them, makes this exhibit very family friendly. The whole group can be seen in one outing either by foot or by car, or they can be visited and enjoyed a few at a time.

A printed map of sculpture locations is available throughout the district to assist people in visiting the

installation. The map is also on the organization’s website at (www.ormondarts.com/ sculptures). Signage and QR codes at each piece provide more information about the statue, the sculptor and the sponsor.

The Ormond Beach Arts District also plans to host more interactive activities to help the sculptures “come alive.” Plans are in the works for an artist paint-out, docent tours and more. More information on the activities will be available on the Ormond Beach Arts District Facebook page as they are scheduled.

As a freshman, Flagler Palm Coast defensive end Cal Zwirn was given the nickname, “Baby Cronk.”

“He did everything Colby did,” FPC defensive coordinator John King said of former FPC defensive end Colby Cronk, who is entering his second season as a defensive lineman at North Carolina State. “That was a great standard for Cal.” “That was a good nickname to have,” said Zwirn, who is now a junior. “Colby Cronk is a great player, obviously. And I aspire to be like him, but also, I am my own person, and I have a different playing style than he does.”

Veal transferred in December to FPC from Viera High School, where he had nine sacks and 54 total tackles as a sophomore last season.

“They’re extremely athletic,” King said of the two ends. “They play disciplined.

They’re coachable. And when the ball is snapped, they are two of the best athletes on the field.”

Zwirn had 24 tackles and a sack in eight games last year, missing two games because of injury.

“Cal’s always been ready to go, even last year when he was hurt,” said senior defensive tackle Reagan Melland. “He still played through it, and we loved that. So having him this year, fully healthy, is going to be very exciting.”

Veal is listed at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, while Zwirn is 6-2, 215 pounds. While Veal is a little quicker and faster, Zwirn “is plenty quick and fast,” King said.

“I think we’re both pretty strong rushers,” Zwirn said.

“And we both know our assignments pretty well. I’m confident in both of our abilities to get to the quarterback as fast as we can.”

King and second-year head coach Patrick Turner are very excited about the Bulldogs’ defense entering the season.

“Defensively, we’re going to be formidable,” King said.

Even though Viera was a playoff team last season, Veal said the Bulldogs’ culture is different with everyone playing for a common goal.

“The intensity is different,” Veal said. “I just feel like the brotherhood here, and the mindset, is definitely different. People are working towards something. I love to be around that, because it pushes me to do something big. People are definitely doubting us. I feel like we’re just going to shock the world.

We’re going to show a lot of people that FPC is better than what they think.”

That starts with the defensive front seven, Zwirn said, where a lot of players are returning.

“There weren’t many seniors that graduated, at least on the defensive line and at linebacker,” Zwirn

said. “Now that we’re growing, getting bigger and faster, and we’re understanding our assignments better, [we’re] much more confident.”

Melland said the defensive line, which also includes starting tackle Jacob Harnisch, has been working better as a group. They’re not only together when they’re on the field and in the film room, in their free time they hang out together, usually at Zwirn’s house.

“He’s the group hangout person. All the D-linemen go to his house,” Melland said.

“I feel like the coaches have helped us a lot to come together more too. Last year, we were a little iffy, but this year I feel like we’re more confident as a team and as a D-line.”

Melland brings the energy and pushes the other linemen to keep their intensity level up,

“People are definitely doubting us. I feel like we’re just going to shock the world. We’re going to show a lot of people that FPC is better than what they think.”

Veal said.

That was the role that Cronk had when he played with the Bulldogs. He was a role model then. Now, according to reports, he weighs over 280 pounds and has been a beast in the Wolfpack’s weight room this offseason, cleaning a program-record 460 pounds and bench pressing 420 pounds, while clocking a 4.8-second 40-yard dash.

“Colby was just so driven,” Zwirn said. “And I really try to push myself in the weight room and on the field and in the classroom to work like he did. It’s definitely helped me to just think about how I could be if I push myself like he did.”

The whole team is more driven this year, King said.

“You can feel the energy compared to this time last year,” he said. “It’s going to be a fun season.”

BRIAN VEAL

Matanzas counting on talented O-line Four of the Pirates’ offensive linemen are back, but they may be moving around to different positions.

Matanzas amassed 3,862 yards of offense last year.

That was largely due to huge production from quarterback Cole Walker, who passed for

2,387 yards as a senior last year, and running back Wiley Conner, who rushed for 1,107 yards.

But in front of every good passer and runner is a good blocker. And the Pirates would not have achieved such offensive success if not for an effective offensive line. Four of the five linemen from last year’s 7-4 team have returned.

The line should be the strength of the team again this season, coach Matt Forrest said, and all of the Pirates’ opponents are well aware of it.

“Our offensive line is going to be very important, because they’re the most experienced group coming back, and they got a lot of talent,” Forrest said. “But everybody’s going to be gunning for them this year. They know they’re coming back.”

Seniors Logan Walker and Jaxon Narrington and junior Sean Liston are all collegecaliber linemen, Forrest said.

Junior tackle Anthony Williams is also returning.

Walker, Liston and Narrington have all been working at multiple positions along the line. Walker, the team’s center last year, may start at guard this season with Liston, who has played guard and tackle, moving to center.

“I’ve always worked all five (positions),” Walker said. “I’ll do anything to make the team better.”

Showing versatility will not only make the team better but may also give the linemen more opportunities to be recruited, Forrest said.

“Them having the confidence to move around will make them more marketable on the next level, and it does a lot for us from depth purposes,” Forrest said. “If one of those three gets hurt, we can shift positions to make it work for a guy that that might not have the same experience.

So if we’ve got a young player

that only plays tackle, we can move a tackle to guard and play the young guy at tackle.”

The Pirates will have a new quarterback this year with juniors Cole Hardy and Michael McDonough and freshman Devin Davis competing to start. As the trio gains more experience, Matanzas will likely lean on its running game, led by Conner.

“He’s the best running back I’ve ever played with,” Narrington said. “We don’t even have to give him that much room. He just finds the hole wherever he goes.”

Darwin “DJ” Harris, who rushed for 488 yards for Flagler Palm Coast last year, and freshman CJ Perkins provide exceptional depth to the offensive backfield.

“We have three of the best running backs in the area,” Narrington said. “And we have some great sniffs (H-backs), who are extra blockers.”

Walker and Liston said the offensive line isn’t as good as it needs to be yet.

“I think we got a lot of stuff to work on,” Walker said. “We

just have to keep our heads down and keep going at it every day.”

Liston said he is still adjusting to the move to center, but in the long run, he expects it will make the line better.

“I’m looking forward to the impact the offensive line is going to have,” he said.

“It’s not a secret,” Forrest said. “If you’re not good on the offensive and defensive line, you’re going to struggle everywhere else.”

Forrest, who is entering his seventh season as the Pirates’ head coach, is trying to put together consecutive winning seasons for the first time.

“The success we had last year is in the past,” Forrest said. “To repeat that success, it takes a lot more work, because pieces do change, different opponents are on the schedule. There are a lot of factors that go into stringing together successful seasons consistently. I want this program to not be an up-anddown program. I want it to be a program that competes in the playoffs every single year.”

Palm Coast United Methodist Church hosted its 15th annual Football Sunday Worship Experience on Sunday, Aug. 9, bringing together football players, cheerleaders, coaches, faculty and staff from Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools for a morning of

faith and fellowship for the upcoming school year.

Attendees from both schools were welcomed with a continental breakfast. Flagler Schools Superintendent LaShakia Moore opened the service by encouraging the students to embrace the opportunities ahead and approach the year with confidence and purpose.

FPC head football coach Patrick Turner challenged his players to “pursue and persevere for the prize,” highlighting the team’s motto, “Be Your Best.” Referencing Ecclesiastes 9:10, he encouraged the athletes to strive to be their best not only as football players, but also as teammates, classmates and people.

Palm Coast resident Robert “Chick” McGuire recently turned 92. For his birthday, his neighbor Joan Soldano took him to the indoor batting cages at Hit House Academy in Bunnell.

leagues in Bayonne for more than 14 years.

“I played third base and was a good player but only had three home runs in all those years,” he said.

Picking up his old bat again, he said it felt a lot heavier than he remembered.

“But I was able to hit a few line drives, and it felt good,” he said after the batting cage session. “Next time I’ll swing for the bleachers.”

What projects are ongoing in the Hammock?

Hammock Community Association hosts Q+A with county employees.

Hammock residents had an opportunity on March 3 to talk to county employees about projects going on in The Hammock.

The Hammock Community Association invited HCA members and Hammock residents to the MalaCompra Community Center on March 3 to hear from Flagler County employees about projects ongoing in The Hammock. HCA President Lora Stillman said this was a great opportunity for Hammock residents to get to know who works for them at the county and to ask questions.

“A lot of the residents in The Hammock either don’t have time and the capability to get into the County Commission meetings,” Stillman said. “And at the County Commission meetings, you don’t generally get the department heads speaking.”

Three department heads came out to the HCA meeting to answer questions: Parks & Recreation manager Denny Bobik, Public Lands and Natural Resource and Environmentally Sensitive Lands manager Erick Revuelta and county engineer Hamid Tabassian. Commissioner Greg Hansen was scheduled to attend but had to cancel at the last minute.

Tabassian’s department deals with construction projects and the beach management projects.

In The Hammock, his department is working on a road improvement project in Jungle Hut Road that will begin construction in 2029 and he is working on submitting a grant for a pedestrian hybrid signal at MalaCompra Road and A1A. The drainage improvement project for First Avenue is now in the permitting phase, and is anticipated to send the project to bid over the summer and construction completed “by the end of the year.”

The MalaCompra Canal expansion is still in the design phase, he said.

Once the design is finished, he said, they will likely have another public workshop with Hammock residents.

The Hammock falls into Reach 3 of the county’s beach renourishment plan, Varn Park to Washington Oaks State Park, which is still in the design phase.

“That work is going to be challenging, to be honest, to get that done, because we have a lot of hardbottom in this area,” Tabassian said.

In the meantime, the county has submitted paperwork to designate Reach 3 as critically eroded. If approved, that will give the county more state funding for the renourishment of that area of shoreline.

“We are very optimistic that that is going to go through,” Tabassian said. “Out of the 18 miles of the coast, a little bit over 10 miles is already designated as critically eroded.”

Revuelta said the Land Management Office was recently moved over to the River-to-Sea Preserve.

more conservation land for the county.

The ESL program has acquired around 6,000 acres of conservation land. In The Hammock, he said, they are working on buy land from JDI Marineland and 40 acres of land between the Intracoastal and S.R. A1A near the Beach Haven development on the north end of the county and the 21-acre Cedar Point property.

In the case of the 40 acre property and the Cedar Point property, the county is not looking to turn those into a park, Revuelta said, but instead place a conservation easement.

Conservation easements limit the type and amount of development that can occur on a property and are less expensive while still preserving land.

“So it stretches your money while still having some protection, but it’s not going to be a park,” he

said.

Parks and Recreation maintains the trails and parks across the county, including the 32 parks, with a crew of just 12. Bobik said he gets a lot of emails from The Hammock residents and it helps his team tremendously.

“There are times where we need y’all’s eyes on to let us know this has happened or a tree has fallen,” Bobik said.

Stillman said listening to the projects under the county’s eye, she is always thinking of other areas of improvement, especially when it comes to land conservation. For every oak tree cut down, she said, the environment and wildlife on the barrier island is impacted.

“It’s just something that we on the board of directors feel really, really committed to making sure that we try to preserve the nature, try to preserve the lifestyle,” Stillman said.

Carol Ann Moseley

March 9, 1961- August 6, 2026 Carol Ann Moseley, 65, of St. Petersburg, passed away on August 6, 2026 in Palm Coast. She was the daughter of the late Carolyn (Lazzeroni) and Cedric Bodoh.

Carol worked as a residential cleaner for many years.

In her spare time she enjoyed fishing and hunting with her mother, brothers, uncles, cousins, and nephews. She always enjoyed spending time with her many beloved nieces and nephews. Carol had a special place in her heart for dogs, especially Chihuahuas. Carol was very proud of the close relationship she had with all

of her siblings.

She is survived by brother Daniel and his wife, Sharon; Mark and his wife, Dawn; Warren and his partner, Peg; and sister, Tina.

September 14, 1984- July 24, 2026 With heavy hearts and profound love, we announce the passing of our beloved Brandon Morris, who was born on September 14, 1984, in Beckley, West Virginia, and was called home on July 24, 2026, in Palm Coast, Florida.

Brandon was a loving fiancé, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and loyal friend whose presence brought warmth and laughter wherever he went. He was known for his infectious smile, great sense of humor, and protective spirit. Brandon had a way of making people feel safe, loved, and accepted.

His generous heart and unwavering love for his family will forever remain a part of those who knew him.

He attended Woodrow Wilson High School and later built a career in hospitality and as a laborer in the construction industry, where he operated forklifts and took great pride in his hard work and dedication. Brandon approached life with determination, resilience, and a willingness to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

When Brandon wasn’t working, he loved spending time fishing on any “creek” in southern West Virginia where he found peace and relaxation in the outdoors. He also enjoyed shooting pool with family and friends creating unforgettable memories.

Whether by casting a line, lining up the perfect shot on the pool table, or simply enjoying the company of those he loved, Brandon treasured every moment spent with family and friends.

Brandon was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Helen Morris; his grandparents, Charles and Mary Barber; and his brother-in-law, Alfred “Les” Taylor.

He leaves to cherish his memory his father, Carlos Morris; loving fiancée, Jennifer Pearce; his son, Aydrean (Aleese) Hunt; his daughter, Eva Pearce-Morris; and Ace Pearce-Morris.

He is also survived by his loving sisters, Traci (LaSalle) Barber-Thompson and Ericka Taylor; his cousins who were more like sisters, Tiffany (Myron) Stevens-Nelson and Brandi Dow (James Singleton); his cousin who was like a brother, Dedrick James; his cherished niece, Tierra Taylor; his beloved nephew, Sterling “Spanky” Nelson; and the big homie Lee “Weezel” Smith; along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
