BEST OF COPS 2025 CORNER JAN. 24

WINE ORGANIZER 1:11 p.m. — 100 block of West Matanzas Woods Parkway, Palm Coast Petit theft. Gas station convenience store employees noticed a man randomly moving wine bottles, and when asked what he was doing, the man said he was “reorganizing the wine for all the white folk.”

His erratic behavior had prompted the employees to call the sheriff’s office, according to his arrest report.

The man, a 34-year-old Georgia resident, was suspected to be intoxicated, and left the store.

The reporting deputy decided to sit and watch the store in case he returned, which he did — he walked in and stole a bottle of $22 bottle of antifreeze, the reports states.

The store wished to press charges. He was taken to jail.

FEB. 8

TEEN IS ‘GOING PLACES’ 12:31 p.m. — Intersection of West Granada Boulevard and North Yonge Street, Ormond Beach Criminal mischief. A 17-yearold Palm Coast teen who interrupted a funeral procession showed up to the police department lobby after he alleged that a member of the procession dented his truck.

The teen, who was with a 19-year-old Palm Coast woman, told police that they had been traveling northbound on U.S. 1 when they encountered a long line of vehicles that were going through intersections “running red lights” with their flashers on, according to a police incident report.

The car at the rear of what they described as a “convoy” would not let them pass.

But the teen found an opening and got around the car. Once at the intersection with Granada Boulevard, he said the car’s driver, dressed in a suit, yelled at them with “a hammer or some type of blunt object in his hand.” This caused the teen to pull away, but he said the man struck the rear driver side cab of his truck, causing the dent.

The teens did see a hearse in the front eventually. The reporting officer noted that the teens were unaware of the traffic laws for a funeral procession, or “what a funeral procession even was.” The reporting officer had to explain that the rear car was keeping the procession together and that the teen driving the way he had been, and honking his horn, was a sign of disrespect.

The teen driver did not seem to care, the report notes. He told police that he “had places to go” and that he wished to pursue charges for the damage. The officer asked him for his driver’s license, to which the teen “sarcastically” stated, “Why do you need that?” according to the report.

The officer explained she needed his driver’s license to file a report, noting that the teen was rude during the entire interview for the report.

MARCH 26

FORGETTING TO PAY 4:13 p.m. — 5100 block of State Road 100, Palm Coast Petit theft. Deputies arrested a 66-year-old California man who blamed “amnesia” after shoplifting from a local big box store.

According to his arrest report, the man was observed on surveillance footage as he collected various items and concealed them in a plastic bag he brought inside with him. He then exited the store, failing to pay for over $385 worth of items, which included two suitcases.

The man told deputies that he has been dealing with medical-related issues and suffers from amnesia. He said he had the finances to pay for the items, and that he “must have forgotten to pay for it,”

his arrest report states. He was asked about a previous shoplifting incident, to which the man said he didn’t remember.

He was taken to jail.

APRIL 24

MAFIOSO 1:53 p.m. — First block of South Beach Street, Ormond Beach Suspicious incident. Police responded to City Hall after clerks in the Finance Department reported a citizen made threats to involve the Italian mafia due to his past-due water bill.

The clerks stated that the 62-year-old Ormond Beach man entered the office to pay his bill and have his water service reconnected. The man appeared annoyed during the interaction, according to the incident report, and told the clerks, “This department is as bad as the Italian mafia.” He then added, “Maybe I should get someone to take care of you all,” subsequently asking one of the clerks if she was Italian.

The clerk didn’t answer and the man left. She told police that the man may be mentally ill, and that they deal with him almost every month.

MAY 27

ART IN THE PARK 12:32 p.m. — 800 block of Grandview Avenue, Daytona Beach Criminal mischief. A 52-yearold Ormond Beach man was arrested after he was found writing on a park’s dog statue with colored markers.

When the reporting officer arrived, the man was instructed to stop writing on the statue, to which the man, who was shirtless, said “he was just trying to make it look better,” and that he’d gotten permission to do so from an unknown woman, according to his arrest report.

The man had drawn multiple polka dots on the body of the dog statue and colored around the nose, ears and eyes. The officer noted it would cost less than $200 to restore the statue to its original condition.

He was taken to jail.

JUNE 23

OBJECTION OVERRULED 12:08 p.m. — First block of South Beach Street, Ormond Beach Disturbance. A 40-year-old Ormond Beach woman was escorted from City Hall after she argumentatively challenged a special magistrate’s ruling after the conclusion of her hearing.

Police report the woman was appealing a trespass warning she had been issued several months ago, which was ultimately upheld. According to an incident report, her case was the final hearing of the day, and though city staff were preparing to leave, the woman refused to leave and continued to yell at the magistrate, saying he had violated her “14th Amendment right.”

The 14th amendment concerns citizenship and equal protections under the law.

Officers told her she would be subject to arrest if she didn’t leave, but the woman remained.

At one point, the incident report notes, she took steps toward one of the officers and repeatedly yelled, “Am I a psycho?”

She was secured in handcuffs and led out of the building while the magistrate was escorted to his own vehicle.

The woman was released on the scene in lieu of being arrested.

SEPT. 4

BAGGED CARCASS 9:02 p.m. — 200 block of Railroad Street, Ormond Beach Animal complaint. Two black trash bags containing the remains of a dead animal triggered a police respond, as initial reports claimed the remains belonged to a decapitated dog. It was actually a deer, according to a police incident report.

When police arrived to the scene, they noticed one of

the bags was still tied and the other was split open, with a partial carcass of a large animal visible. Inside the other bag were two of the animal’s legs, “appearing to be removed from an intense impact.”

A community service officer supervisor advised police to leave the carcass in place because there was no way to store it, and due to its “overwhelming stench.” The supervisor then identified the carcass as that belonging to a deer.

SEPT. 14

‘EGGS’-ILED TO JAIL 7:08 a.m. – 2400 block of North Ocean Shore Boulevard, Beverly Beach Possession of eggs of a marine turtle. An Ormond Beach man was caught with drugs and sea turtle eggs in his truck after a deputy found him loitering outside a home, in violation of a court injunction after a recent arrest.

The man was found inside a parked truck, asleep, according to the man’s arrest report.

When the deputy got the man out of the truck, he found five sea turtle eggs in a plastic container on the floorboard.

While taking the eggs out of the truck into evidence bags, the deputy noticed a marijuana bowl on the ground that was not there when he first pulled up, the report said.

A search of the suspect’s person and truck turned up a THC vape pen, a glass jar with fentanyl powder in it, another bowl and a handmade metal pipe. The man told the deputy he found the eggs and that the fentanyl jar washed up on the beach.

OCT. 17

SHOT FIRED 9:38 a.m. — 800 block of Airport Road, Ormond Beach Person shot. Police officers responded to a call about a person shot after a 38-yearold Deltona man accidentally fired his gun while retrieving it from his waistband.

According to a police incident report, the man was found laying on the grass on the side of the road by his friend’s pickup truck. Deputies who arrived on the scene first applied a tourniquet to his right leg and the man was transported to the hospital as a trauma alert.

The man’s friend told police his friend had asked him for permission to leave his gun in the truck when he soon heard a gunshot and called 911.

Officers went to the hospital to speak with the man, who said he fired a round into his right testicle while removing the gun from his waistband. He pulled the bullet out himself, the report states.

DEC. 12

A BIT OF EVERYTHING 8:40 p.m. — Intersection of State Road 100 and Seminole Woods Boulevard, Palm Coast DUI. A Palm Coast man who was found unconscious behind the wheel of his car at an intersection later told deputies had taken “a little bit of everything” when asked if he’d taken any narcotics.

Law enforcement officers on their way back to work after a holiday event found the driver slumped, unconscious in his running car at the intersection, according to an arrest report. Because the driver did not respond to any attempt to wake him, one police officer used their baton to break two windows to place the car in park.

While officers began checking on the man, he jerked awake and admitted to taking narcotics, the report said.

A search of the man’s car turned up a small plastic baggie with a white powdery substance in the center console alongside two cut straws, and a brown, waxy substance wrapped in tinfoil. Both substances tested positive for fentanyl.

The man was arrested and has been charged with driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Deputies found no alcohol in his system.

SPORTS Best of 2025: FPC, Seabreeze state championships are top sports stories FPC won girls state wrestling. Seabreeze won boys state bowling for the second straight year.

MAKE ROOM FOR THE GIRLS TROPHY

Flagler Palm Coast won a state team wrestling championship to add to its trophy case. It’s the Bulldogs’ fourth title. But this one was accomplished by the girls team. FPC put up a state record 150 points to win its first girls wrestling championship on March 8.

Christina Borgmann and Kendall Bibla each won an individual championship for

the second time. Borgmann won her second in a row for the Bulldogs, while Bibla won her first title as a sophomore at Matanzas. They are both now wrestling in college.

In addition to the two titles, Ana Vilar placed second in her weight class; Joslyn Johnson, Mariah Mills and Tiana Fries all placed third; and Alexa Calidonio placed fifth.

In July, Bibla (third place) and Mills (seventh) earned All-American honors at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota.

SEABREEZE BOWLERS DEFEND THEIR TITLE

Seabreeze defended its state boys bowling championship on Oct. 30. This time, the Sandcrabs made it interesting. They had only five bowlers on the team, so they had no subs. They had to go to a second Baker Match against Titusville Astronaut in the final. They won that match 3-2, winning the final game, 199-191.

“They persevered, they pushed and they never gave up,” Seabreeze coach Paul

team. They were joined by first-year bowler Jonathan King.

“If it wasn’t for [King], we wouldn’t even have had a chance to do this,” Boice said.

“He not only bowls, but he just bowls at such a high level, not even for how long he’s been bowling. If it wasn’t for him, none of this would have been possible.”

JESSIE BECH COMPLETES SIXTH MAJOR MARATHON

Palm Coast dentist Jessie Bech earned a Six Star Finisher Medal by finishing all six Abbott World Marathon Majors. She finished her last one, the Tokyo Marathon, on March 2 in a time of three hours, 41 minutes.

Only about 7,000 women worldwide have earned a Six Star Finisher Medal. Bech completed her first major marathon, Chicago, in 2011.

She then ran New York, Boston and Berlin.

SOFIA JAMES: TWO SPORTS AT THE SAME TIME

The day after Seabreeze senior Sofia James placed third at district wrestling, she competed in the Class 2A state weightlifting championships, placing fourth at 169 pounds in the traditional competition and eighth in Olympic.

James, a first-year wrestler, advanced to the state meet in that sport too. She trained in both sports in consecutive practices for about two months. While more competitive in weightlifting, James said wrestling was fun because she was learning new things and steadily improved.

FPC girls soccer coach Pete Hald is in his 35th season with the Bulldogs. On Dec. 5 he won his 550th game. His players left little doubt that this would be the day he’d reach the milestone by defeating Sandalwood 5-0. Also in the game, goalkeeper Natalie Neal notched her 400th career save. The Bulldogs headed into winter break without a loss, running their record to 10-0-4.

Williams went on to earn three gold medals in the U17 age group at the USA Weightlifting National Championships in Colorado Springs on June 22.

STATE TRACK CHAMPS

FPC’s Colby Cronk won the Class 4A state shot put championship for the second year in a row. He also repeated his second-place finish in discus. The North Carolina State football recruit started track season late after undergoing labrum surgery in November, 2024. The day after the championships, Cronk headed to Raleigh, North Carolina, to begin college.

FPC’s other medalists included Maya Tyson (third in girls shot put), Karina Marcelus (fourth in both girls 100 hurdles and triple jump), Tanner Cauley-Bennett (fourth in boys pole vault), Michael London (fifth in discus), Corinthians Watson (eighth in boys triple jump) and the girls 4x800-meter relay team (seventh).

BOUNCE BACK YEAR FOR BUCS

A year after losing in the first round of the playoffs and finishing with a 5-6 record, the Mainland High School football team returned to its usual high standard, advancing to the Region 1-5A championship game and finishing the season with a 9-3 mark.

HONORABLE MENTION:

FPC senior Arianna Slaughter broke the school’s girls cross country record at regionals with a 5K time of 18:17.3 and then finished 10th at the Class 4A state championship on Nov. 22. Peyton Cerasi placed 11th in the girls 3A state championship. FPC freshman Douglas Seth placed 13th in the boys 4A state race.

Eighth grader Avery Wisniewski, a runner with the Imagine School at Town Center club team, earned All-American honors with a 16th-place finish in the Middle School Cross Country Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, on Nov. 16.

FPC’s Alexa Calidonio, Joslyn Johnson and Alisha Vilar all won titles at the Flagler Rotary Girls Wrestling Invitational on Nov. 25. Johnson was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.

Mainland senior Kaiya Brown, who trains with Palm Coast Gymnastics, signed a gymnastics scholarship with Temple University on Nov. 12.

She is Palm Coast Gymnastics’ first athlete to receive a Division I scholarship.

Palm Coast’s Carrie Menge completed the 100.2-mile Western States Endurance

Run in 29 hours, 26 minutes, 50 seconds on June 29.

She finished just under the 30-hour cutoff for the ultra marathon, which ends in Auburn, California. Meng, the event’s assistant race director, had to work the night before the start of the race helping to prepare for race day.

Matanzas baseball coach Jim Perry retired in June after spending 11 years with the Pirates, 10 years as a coach with FPC and 33 years overall as a baseball and football coach.
