Top 10 stories of the year in 2019 Matt Morton is the new city manager. They’re very different from each other: Cameron is a Southern gentleman who speaks very slowly, like he’s pushing honey, and Morton comes most recently from Washington state and speaks 100 mph. There’s a new spirit of cooperation, and both Cameron and Morton feel that they’re getting their staff directors ready for a productive 2020. Get ready because we might be looking at some honey heading our way at 100 mph. Incidentally, the Flagler Chamber (Aimee Stafford) and

It’s surreal to review a whole year of news in 10 minutes. Where did 2019 go? And wasn’t 2020 supposed to be some year in the distant future? I admit that I’m one of those people who, when someone mentions the year 2000, I think it wasn’t that long ago. Putting the top news stories in order of importance is probably a useless endeavor, but for some reason, I love doing it. You can listen to WNZF’s “Free For All Friday” at 9 a.m. on Dec. 27 to hear me, David Ayres and Pierre Tristam discuss the year that was — and why we disagree with each other’s lists.

Water intrusion and bat guano were found at the Sheriff’s Operations Center. Then it was determined the building was fixable. It remains empty today.
Four deaths were among the most viewed stories online this year: third grader Connor Allen, in January; Curtis Gray, 18, was shot in April; Dr. Martin Kubiet, of AdventHealth, died in October, as did Savannah Sizemore, in a crash.

Among our top stories of the year online were announcing that the following were coming to Palm Coast: Texas Roadhouse, Popeye’s, Culver’s —and two local places called Cuban Sandwiches and Shape of Water.
Belle Terre Principal Terence Culver retired while the news broke that Flagler Schools is investigating his school. FDLE is now investigating accusations of financial impropriety.
While Matanzas Woods is almost surely losing its golf course, the City Council is taking steps to preserve the Palm Harbor Golf Course longterm. Residents also have fought the proposed Gardens on John Anderson. Hammock residents came out en masse to protest the subsidies for and renovation of Captain’s BBQ. A boat storage project and Beachwalk homes faced similar opposition, as residents feel The Hammock’s identity is at stake.

Hurricane Dorian carved away some dunes but mostly spared us. Still, evacuations were mandatory, and it was probably the most disruptive event of the year in many people’s lives. It certainly got the most attention on our website all year. 2. HOMELESS VACATED
After the county posted a notice to vacate behind the library, the homeless were ultimately told to leave to make way for a new district office for the sheriff. What’s the county’s longterm solution for the homeless? Meanwhile, The Sheltering Tree got the Department of Justice’s support — for now. 3. TOWN CENTER AWAKENS
Apartments are sprouting in Town Center, and UNF is proposing a Medical Nexus. The vision is coming to pass. 4. CAMERON AND MORTON

lagler Palm Coast swimmer Micayla Cronk continues to add to her already decorated trophy case. Cronk, who won a state championship in the 100yard freestyle as a freshman in 2017 and state championships in the 100 and the 200-yard freestyles in 2018, won gold at the 2019 Class 4A FHSAA State Swim Meet on Nov. 15 yet again in the 100 and 200. She missed out on a state record in the 200 by .08 seconds, finishing with a time of 1 minute, 44.39 seconds. However, in the 100, she touched the wall in 48.20 seconds, eclipsing Abbey Weitzel’s state record of 48.69, which was set in 2016. Cronk is a 16-year-old junior, a five-time state champion and is arguably the most decorated athlete in Bulldogs history.

MATANZAS’ WILL LAM CAPTURES STATE WEIGHTLIFTING TITLE
2019 was all about redemption for Matanzas weightlifter Will Lam, after he scratched out in the district meet the season prior. Lam breezed through districts and regionals, earning a spot in the 2019 Class 2A FHSAA Boys Weightlifting State Championship in the 169-pound class on April 12 at Arnold High School in Panama City Beach. Lam was flawless on the bench press, easily hitting all of his lifts, including a max of 360 pounds. He finished with a max 295-pound clean-and-jerk, upping hit total to 655 pounds, which was 35 pounds clear of second place.

Sports moments BUCHANAN SISTERS AT STATE WEIGHTLIFTING MEET
The Bulldogs’ boys track and field team placed second overall at the 2019 Class 4A State Championship. The Bulldogs were bolstered by several stellar performances: Jacob Miley narrowly missed out on a gold medal in the 800-meter run, completing the race in a personal best 1:51.03. He also helped

Matanzas’ boys wrestling team had one of its most successful seasons ever in 2019. The Pirates made area history by being the first Flagler County team to qualify for the state duals championship. The Pirates beat rival FPC for the first time in a decade, they won the district and finished second at regionals, and they qualified nine wrestlers for the state tournament, where they had three place (S.J. Culbreth, Quenteen Robinson and Lawrence Russo).

Lexi Buchanan, who won gold in the unlimited weight class in 2018, fell short of her main goal in 2019 —but she came mighty close. Buchanan bench pressed 280 pounds and clean-andjerked 205 pounds to earn a silver medal at the Class 2A FHSAA Girls Weightlifting State Championship on Feb. 8 at Arnold High School. Her sister, freshman Anniel Buchanan, benched 190 and clean-and-jerked 170 to finish third in the 199-pound weight class.
