KIDS SNEAK INTO VACANT HOME’S POOL 3:27 p.m. First block of Wellwater Drive Trespassing. A woman called the Sheriff’s Office when she noticed a group of kids swimming in the pool at a vacant house behind her property.

The house had recently been sold, the woman explained to deputies, and she could hear the kids jumping into the pool and was worried they might hurt themselves.

A deputy checked the property and found an unlocked sliding glass door and wet footprints around the entrance to the pool.

Other deputies arrived and helped secure the home, but didn’t find the kids.

BICYCLING UNDER THE INFLUENCE 8:21 p.m. First block of Zelda Court DUI. A deputy got a call about a drunk person and arrived to find the person in question, a woman, riding a bicycle on a residential street.

The woman was on pretrial release, and wasn’t supposed to be drinking alcohol. She failed sobriety testing and refused a breath test.

The deputy arrested her on a DUI charge for riding her bicycle under the influence and gave her a citation for riding at night without lights.

On April 1, just weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic, 7,773 people in Florida had tested positive for the insidious disease. By July 1, that total was up to 158,997. On Oct. 1, it had leaped to 709,144.

And on Dec. 1, Florida reached a milestone that nobody wanted to see: It exceeded 1 million reported cases.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and health officials say vaccines are on the way. In the meantime, thousands of new cases and dozens of deaths are reported every day in Florida.

The Florida Department of Health on Dec. 1 reported 8,847 additional cases, bringing the total to 1,008,166 since the pandemic began. It also reported 82 deaths of Florida residents, bringing that total to 18,679.

The way Florida, other states, the nation and the world have handled the pandemic will be studied far into the future. But DeSantis said this week he is focused on plans for vaccines and reiterated his view that government-imposed mandates such as requiring people to wear face masks and shutting down businesses won’t prevent the spread of the disease.

“I’m opposed to mandates, period,” DeSantis said during a news conference Monday about continuing to allow public-school

students to attend classes in person or online. “I don’t think they work. People in Florida wear them (masks) when you go out. I mean, they don’t have to be strung up by a bayonet to do it. Fining people, I think, is totally overboard.”

DeSantis said the state needs to focus on protecting the mostvulnerable people, such as residents of long-term care facilities.

But he rejected the possibilities of shutdowns, saying the “effects of that are profound.”

DeSantis, however, drew fire from Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who said he “refuses to show leadership” by requiring masks. She said masks slow the spread of the virus.

“This is not something that goes against your personal liberties,” Fried, the only statewide elected Democrat, told The News Service of Florida. “You have to put on a seatbelt in the car. You have got to put your kids in a car seat. You can’t text and drive. This is something that is going to protect not just you but your loved ones and the people around you.”

As Florida exceeded 1 million cases since the start of the pandemic, it and many other states are experiencing surges this fall.

On Nov. 1, for example, Florida reported 807,412 cases. With the 1,008,166 cases reported Tuesday, the state saw slightly more than 200,000 cases in a month — after a nearly 100,000-case increase the previous month.

Medical campus gets support Proposed new hospital facility gets City Council’s initial approval.

Palm Coast may get a second hospital on an 89-acre parcel of land on the west side of U.S. 1 at its intersection with Palm Coast Parkway.

The Palm Coast City Council approved some preliminary land use measures for the planned facility at a City Council meeting Dec. 1, although the identity of the eventual user of that land was not revealed by the applicant landowner, Florida Landmark Communities.

“It is … a medical campus that we hope will bring jobs,” local attorney Michael Chiumento, the applicant’s representative, said at the meeting. “You can see the acreage of this and the size and scope of this project: It could be a significant change and employment base for our community for a dozen years.”

He compared the project to AdventHealth Palm Coast, which sits on about 95 acres on State Road 100.

The property, referred to as “South Palm Coast Park” in city documents, currently has a zoning designation of master planned development, or MPD, but does not have an approved development agreement in place, Palm Coast Senior Planner Jose Papa said. That’s what the applicant was seeking the council’s

approval for, along with some leeway on development standards: The proposal called for a slightly higher impervious area ratio than the city code allows — 0.75 instead of the allowable 0.7 — as well as a floor-area ratio of 0.55 rather than the currently permitted 0.5.

The development would also include interior pedestrian pathways, a sidewalk crosswalk across US 1 and access driveways on US. Council members had no objections to those requests, but Councilman Eddie Branquinho raised another concern: The proposed agreement mentioned a medical campus but also additional uses such as retail or restaurants.

What guarantee, he asked, did the council have that the proposed facility would remain a medical facility and not be transformed into something else after the council approved it?

City Attorney Bill Reischmann noted that the wording of the proposed master planned development agreement mentions non-medical uses as “ancillary” to the medical uses. “Everything after that comma, after ‘medical campus,’ is going to be interpreted in light of that term, those two words ‘medical campus,’ and that’s going to be something that will be enforced by the city,” Reischmann said.

Chiumento confirmed that non-medical uses would be secondary.

“Commercial uses are envisioned to be there as a complementary use of the main idea of a medical campus,” Chiumento said. “Restaurants to support

them, a bagel shop, maybe classrooms, possibly even a hotel to support overnight stay users.”

That satisfied Branquinho, although he noted that he wanted to ensure that non-hospital buildings would be kept under the zoning district’s maximum building height of 100 feet.

Chiumento said that what the council was seeing at that point was a “30,000-foot-view of what we’re going to try to do,” and that the council will see more specifics in a few months when the applicant develops a site plan and seeks the council’s approval for that.

No residents objected to the proposal during the meeting’s public comment period.

“This is a great project; this is exciting,” resident Perry Mitrano said. “I’d love to see it happen fast. I want to see it grow — bring jobs, good paying jobs.”

One resident, mentioning the possible hotel, asked what its forecasted occupancy would be compared to the hotels the city already has.

Chiumento said the hotel was just an example of a possible commercial use in the future.

“This is a living project that will last through decades and generations; we don’t know that one will be there,” he said.

The council voted 5-0 to approve the proposed master planned development agreement, with allowance for the requested impervious area and floor-area ratios and a requirement that facilities other than a hospital be kept under 100 feet.

Board opposes trans protections Advocates want the district to add ‘gender identity’ to its nondiscrimination policy.

With two new board members seated, the Flagler County School Board still does not support adding “gender identity” to the list of identity categories protected in its nondiscrimination statement. Doing so would make clear that transgender students are protected.

The split is now 3-2 against adding the wording, rather than 4-1, as it had been before.

Longtime board member Colleen Conklin proposed adding the language during a Dec. 1 board workshop as the board considered a set of federally mandated changes to the nondiscrimination policy.

Other board members argued against adding the wording on the basis that it was controversial and that the district’s existing protections against discrimination on the basis of gender implicitly also cover gender identity.

“The whole reason we have even had this conversation is because not all students feel protected, and not all students feel they’re being treated equally,” Conklin said. “... They have shared very clearly what’s happening in their world. ... If we don’t support the inclusion of those terms in our policy, what message does that send?”

The potential wording change was first proposed a year ago by the parents of a local trans student, and the topic incited a series of contentious board meetings as trans students and their supporters faced off against opponents who called trans people unnatural and mentally ill.

Those discussions came to a head when the board placed the proposed change on a meeting agenda but decided against it after Conklin was the only one to support it. Since that meeting, new board members Jill Woolbright and Cheryl Massaro have been seated, and a Supreme Court case has established that discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation constitutes illegal discrimination on the basis of sex.

Conklin, after listening to several board members argue that adding the words “gender identity” isn’t necessary, noted that transgender students have addressed the board to say they don’t feel protected.

“If you were one of those students and you came and you shared your story, and you heard this conversation right now, how would that make you feel about who you are?” Conklin said.

Massaro agreed with Conklin, saying adding the wording would be worth it if it protects even one student.

Residents object to Branquinho-Danko spat

Palm Coast residents appealed to the City Council during a Dec. 1 council meeting to enforce rules of civility against Councilman Eddie Branquinho, who’d instigated a vulgar argument at the dais with newly seated Councilman Ed Danko at a council meeting two weeks before.

Branquinho had objected to Danko’s campaign comments about the city being “corrupt,” and had demanded a personal apology, saying that Danko had implicitly implicated Branquinho in his statements.

Branquinho said that if he didn’t get an apology, he’d

refer to Danko as “Councilman Corrupt.”

Danko had replied that he hadn’t called Branquinho corrupt and would not apologize for something he hadn’t done, and said that if Branquinho called him “Councilman Corrupt,” he’d call Branquinho “Councilman Full of Crap.”

Neither man called the other names at the Dec. 1 meeting.

But the seating at the dais, where Danko and Branquinho had initially been seated next to each other, had been changed, placing the two men on opposite sides of the room.

Neither addressed the other,

responded to the residents’ comments or spoke of the dispute.

“I’m gravely concerned if this is your true personality that you displayed at the swearing in, Councilman Branquinho,” a P-Section resident said at the meeting. “I felt like you had planned to intimidate. The behavior has many concerned if you’re fit for the position.

I noticed that you never apologized for the tirade against Councilman Ed Danko. Sadly, you actually boasted about it. …

That set a negative tone, and we have our eyes on you now.”

Another resident asked

Holland to have Branquinho removed from the room if he has another outburst.

“I’m a little dismayed, Mayor Holland, at the way that he behaved last week,” she said. She noted that Branquinho, in a recent comment to the press, had used vulgar language when speaking about Danko.

“He has used language that is unbecoming to his chair,” she said. “This is not the language we would expect from a professional person. … It’s OK to disagree, but it’s not alright to bully someone.”

‘Commerce Park’ planned A commercial development may take up 40 acres of land at the southeast corner of Belle Terre Boulevard and Citation Boulevard. The vacant land is zoned for commercial use, and the council OK’d the owner’s request to cancel an existing plat so the land can be used more efficiently.

L ETT ERS Branquinho and Danko need to become leaders Dear Editor: I grew up in Palm Coast. I met my wife here. I’m raising a child here. A former reporter for the Observer, I’ve covered City Council meetings here and met so many neighbors, told their stories and, through that process, put down roots here.

I’ve loved seeing this city evolve the past 30 years, and I want to be proud of where it goes next.

With that in mind, I’d like to tell City Councilmen Eddie Branquinho and Ed Danko that I was embarrassed to read about how the last council meeting devolved.

Look, I get it: Apologizing is hard. Forgiving is hard. Swallowing pride is hard. But I’d love to hear each of them say something like the following in the next meeting: “Ladies and gentlemen, “For the sake of moving forward in a spirit of civility, I apologize for my behavior at the last City Council meeting, and for my part in starting this new era for the city off on such poor footing.

I know you all deserve better.

“Life and politics can be brutal — especially during a pandemic.

Sometimes it’s difficult to keep our emotions untangled. But we were elected because people believed in us, and now it’s our job to live up to that belief, display the maturity, judgement and perspective this office deserves.

We failed in doing so last week, but in recognizing that, we can grow. That’s what I want for us, the same as for this city, but that would be impossible without daily reminders that we’re here to serve, not serve ourselves.

“So, again, I apologize. And I look forward to working together to make this city the best that it can be.”

How’s that?

Councilmen, be the one who realizes that being “right” is irrelevant, and not worth being so wrong.

You both are in positions to not just make a difference through the decisions you make but in how you make them, how you treat each other and what that says about Flagler County.

Palm Coast isn’t just the place where I grew up; it’s where I learned what it meant to be a grownup. You can become leaders — both of you. The residents of my hometown, and their children, need you to be.

Branqhuinho should acknowledge city’s corruption Dear Editor: If City Council member Eddie Branquinho doesn’t believe there is credible evidence of corruption in the Palm Coast government, you have to wonder what planet he has been living on.

The stories in the press have been numerous and have involved alleged improprieties by Mayor Milissa Holland and the mixing of personal and city business while City Manager Matt Morton has become the royal executioner, trying to decapitate anyone who speaks badly about her highness, the mayor, to the point of firing people who have already resigned.

Now, Mr. Branquinho may not agree with some or all of these allegations, but to pretend that they don’t exist and have substance makes you wonder how he can effectively function in the political arena.

It is vital that our political leaders are aware of the political factors and personalities that will determine outcomes. Mr. Branquinho is an affable guy and can be persuasive, but we need him to be on top of all the city concerns to best serve the people of Palm Coast. The last thing we need is for him to invent a feud with Mr. Danko over a personal opinion. After all, they will have to work together at least another two years.

Don’t waste time on transgender claims Dear Editor: It seems that one parent wants the School Board to add gender identity to its list of protected characteristics. The transgender claim is that people are the gender they claim to be. Birth sex is the sex you were born with and is determined by the equipment you possessed at birth.

Some confused people, and this includes some doctors, say that hormones, chromosomes, reproductive organs or secondary sex characteristics do not determine gender. The more rational say a male will still be a male and a female will still be a female. Sex is a biological reality.

What really annoys me is that our School Board is wasting time dealing with such nonsense when it should be concerned with the fact that many students are not performing at grade level.

There already is a policy that covers discrimination. They’ve got everything covered except “left-handedness.”

Nine percent of people are left-handed; I’m one of them. I know how it feels to be bullied; in the eighth grade a boy would rag me about being a southpaw.

I told him to quit. He didn’t; I hit him in the mouth. I broke my hand; he lost several teeth and his lip had to be sewed up. I never got bullied again. There’s an easy solution to everything.

“controversial,” framing that as a reason the board should not add protections for trans students, rather than as a reason they might be especially in need of explicit protection.

“As a School Board member, I’m here to protect kids, but I’m not here to make laws that are so controversial, that have divided this country — and you include them, you divide the country; you exclude them, you divide the country,” Woolbright said. “It’s words on the paper that the Supreme Court said is not necessary.”

Woolbright was referring to a recent Supreme Court decision that established that discriminating against people on the basis of their transgender identity, or against gay, bisexual or lesbian people on the basis of their sexual orientation, violates existing Civil Rights Act protections against discrimination on the basis of sex.

An employer who allows nontransgender women to wear dresses but fires a transgender woman for doing the same thing, for instance, is treating the transgender woman differently on the basis of her birth sex, which constitutes sex discrimination, the court found in its 6-3 decision.

Board member Janet McDonald said the district can protect students through procedures, without changing policy.

“Our individual walk through life is what we’re here to do, and everyone takes on burdens or takes on opportunities that drive them to the next level of development,” McDonald said. “And I can’t coach each one of them individually, but at certain times we all have misperceptions about who we are and where we are and what we want to do. McDonald agreed with Woolbright’s concern.

“You could piecemeal every single one of the qualifiers, every shade of the rainbow, every religion, every non-religion,” McDonald said. “You could go through the whole list; somebody is going to feel left out. ... When you start dividing and splitting hairs — this identity politics, it’s always going to leave someone out, and no one group is more important or less important than another.”

The board’s existing policy lists “race, color, religion, gender, age, marital status, sexual orientation, pregnancy, disability, political or religious beliefs, national or ethnic origin, or genetic information.”

Those are all categories of identities rather than individual identities, and adding “gender identity” would be adding another category, not a specific identity. Still, one of the proposed mandated changes to the district policy adds a parenthetical after the word race — inserting the words, “(including anti-Semitism)”.

“There’s just another example of a group that felt unprotected that needs to be added,” Massaro said. “... The transgender and LGBT group in Flagler County ... are going to continue to grow, and they’re going to be here because they do not believe that they are equally represented and protected, and I have to agree to them. ... [Adding “gender identity”] shows that it’s protected; that’s all they’re asking. ... If that’s all it takes, I don’t understand the problem.”

Lawsuit says school district didn’t respond adequately to bullying before teen’s suicide The district is denying allegations contained in a lawsuit filed by the mother of Shauntiana Stafford, an FPC student who died by suicide in 2019.

A Flagler Palm Coast High School student who died by suicide last year repeatedly told school district staff that she was being bullied, but the district failed to intervene to help her, her mother has alleged in a lawsuit filed against the school district. The district is contesting the allegations.

Shauntiana Stafford died in January 2019 at age 17. Her mother, Carissa Jackson, said Stafford had been tormented at school by other students.

Jackson’s complaint, filed Aug. 31 by attorney Eric Andeer of Morgan & Morgan, calls the district “negligent in the performance of its duties ... resulting in the death of Shauntiana A. Stafford.”

“At all times material hereto Defendant FCS had a non-delegable duty to all students enrolled in its school system, including Shauntiana A. Stafford, to develop and implement a policy for identifying bullying and harassment occurring on school property, during school hours or at school related functions and events; to investigate incidents of student bullying both reported and unreported; to ascertain that those responsible for the bullying and harassment are identified and

immediately stopped from doing so; to identify victims of bullying and harassment; and to identify counseling and other supportive services necessary to address the effect of bullying on a student victim,” the complaint of the lawsuit states.

Stafford, the lawsuit continues, “suffered physical and emotional injuries of a permanent and emotionally debilitating nature and/or suffered from an aggravation of previously existing emotional injury as result of multiple instances of bullying and/or harassment while a student.”

The bullying Stafford endured including being “constantly insulted” for her appearance, pushed and kicked, and bullied on social media, according to the complaint.

Although Stafford and Jackson reported the bullying to teachers and administrators, “defendant FCS’s principals, administrators, teachers or agents failed to

take any action,” according to the complaint.

The suit alleges that the school district breached its duty of care regarding Stafford by failing to investigate instances of bullying and harassment, failing to take measures to protect her, failing to adhere to policies for identifying bullied students, failing to take disciplinary action against the student who bullied her and failing to provide counseling or other measures to curtail harassment.

The district’s Nov. 4, 2020, response to Jackson’s complaint acknowledges the district’s “duty of reasonable supervision” to Stafford and other students at school and school-sponsored events, but denies any breach of that duty.

It acknowledges that Stafford and her mother had reported incidents of bullying and negative comments by other students, but denies that the district responded inadequately.

“The injuries and damages alleged to be suffered by the Plaintiff were caused by persons and/or entities over whom the Defendant had no control or duty to control,” the district’s response states. “... The School Board is not the insurer of the safety of its students and is not strictly liable for any injuries that may occur.

Further, the School Board did not have a duty to Shauntiana A. Stafford to supervise all of her movements at all of the times.”

BRIEFS Firefighters rescue blind, missing dog on embankment Flagler County firefighters have rescued a missing, blind dog that fell down a steep, 20-foot embankment along the Intracoastal and got stuck in the mud.

The dog, an older Jack Russell terrier named Mattie, had gone missing during a stroll with her owners, who looked for hours before calling Animal Control.

A crew from Station 41 was also dispatched to assist Animal Control, according to Fire Rescue Lt. Mike Pius.

Flagler County Animal Control Officer Dawn Morton and helper Ronnie Williams found Mattie on the other side of the bank. The dog had wandered into a wooded area and fallen down the embankment along the water.

Pius, Firefighter Paramedic John Raffo, Firefighter Paramedic Marianne Houston and Firefighter EMT Noah Dunaway showed up to help.

Houston climbed down the embankment, and the crew used a canoe provided by a neighbor to get the dog, who was reunited with her owners unharmed.

Felon charged with raping girl A 50-year-old felon who has repeatedly been arrested only to shortly thereafter be released and commit yet more crimes has now been arrested for raping a girl, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

years old, was raped by suspect Charles Swindell multiple times over more than a year, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

Swindell took the girl to his pickup truck to assault her. At some point, someone who suspected that Swindell was abusing the girl placed two iPads in the truck, set to audio record, before Swindell entered the truck with the girl.

Swindell suspected that someone had placed a recording device in the truck, so he made the girl search it. She found both iPads but only showed him one, leaving the other hidden and set on record.

The person who’d placed the iPads later reviewed the audio and contacted the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Swindell has previously been arrested and charged with crimes including burglary, witness tampering, illegally possessing a firearm as a felon, aggravated battery and child abuse — for an incident in which he’d deliberately burned an 11-year-old boy’s face with a pair of hot sunglasses.

Florida’s Thanksgiving gas prices were the lowest in 12 years Floridians who took a holiday road trip last week found the lowest Thanksgiving gas prices in 12 years. Florida gas prices averaged $2.03 per gallon on Thanksgiving Day. That was 40 cents less than the year before and the lowest since 2008, when pump prices averaged $1.91 per gallon.

“Floridians may see gas prices inch up a few pennies this week,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group.

“Last week, vaccine optimism sent crude oil to its highest price since early March, before COVID-related lock downs were imposed across the country.

Wholesale gasoline prices also increased as a result. A state average price of $2.08 per gallon is possible, unless fundamentals shift this week.”

The price for WTI crude oil increased 8% last week. Friday’s daily settlement of $45.53 per barrel was $3.38 more than the Friday before. An increase of that magnitude can sometimes trigger to an 8 cent increase at the pump.

Florida gas prices have held steady at $2.03 per gallon for the past week. The state average is 3 cents less than a week ago, and 41 cents less than this time last year.

Cold weather shelter opened For the first time this season, The Sheltering Tree opened a cold-weather shelter, Nov. 30, and Dec. 1, for the homeless.

The shelter had financial support of Flagler County and the cities of Bunnell, Flagler Beach, and Palm Coast.

Church on the Rock in Bunnell is the host facility.

“We are using the main sanctuary to make sure we have enough space (for social distancing), because of COVID-19,” said James Bellino, church pastor. “The Sheltering Tree runs the operation, and we provide the facility.”

An interlocal agreement was signed in February 2020 between Flagler County and the three municipalities to provide $1,000 per night — capped at 24 nights — to cover costs associated with providing the service, such as space usage, utilities, security and meals, among other expenses. Limited transportation will also be provided.

“Homelessness is a problem that traverses jurisdictional boundaries and therefore, the most effective solutions will involve intergovernmental coordination,” the agreement states.

The criteria for opening the cold-weather shelter is based on an overnight temperature that dips below 40 degrees.

The Sheltering Tree, under the umbrella of the Flagler County Family Assistance Center, is a non-denominational civic organization that was created in 2011 to provide cold-weather sheltering during cold nights in Flagler County.

Judge won’t toss out Captain’s lawsuit The restaurant’s attorney has requested the deposition of both the county attorney and the county administrator.

A circuit judge ruled against the Flagler County government Nov. 18 after its legal team made an unusual request — that the judge toss out a restaurant’s breach-of-contract lawsuit against the county on the grounds that the county had entered into the contract illegally.

Judge Terence Perkins found that argument unconvincing.

Perkins denied the county’s request without prejudice, so the county could raise the issue again in the future.

Captain’s BBQ, a restaurant on county-owned land at Bings Landing park, had alleged that the county violated a lease agreement with the restaurant after the County Commission voted to approve the lease in November 2018 but then reversed itself two weeks later, deciding after a new board member was seated to reconsider the matter.

By then, area residents had organized to oppose the restaurant’s expansion plans or its presence as a commercial entity in the park.

The county has argued that the 2018 lease — which would have allowed an expanded restaurant site in a different part

of the park — was “an illegal and void contract” that was not enforceable because the county hadn’t gone through the proper bidding process under Florida law, according to the text of the county’s request for summary judgement.

The illegality of the contract, the county argued, was grounds for the restaurant’s lawsuit to be dismissed.

Even if the lease had been valid, the county government has not breached it, the county argued.

The restaurant is currently operating in the park under a 2011 lease, and, in the meantime, “The county does not have any affirmative obligations under the amended/restated lease which apply before Captain’s BBQ constructs the new location,” the county document states. “That is, the county’s obligations concern actions to be taken only after the new location is constructed.”

Those obligations would involve expanding visitor parking and upgrading the site’s septic system, among others.

In a written response to the county’s request that the case be thrown out, attorney Gregory Snell, representing Captain’s BBQ, contested the county’s assertion that the county was required to follow the state’s

“best and highest bidder” law regarding the restaurant.

And, he added, “The county maintains that they should be excused from performing the obligations they voluntarily agreed to with Captain’s BBQ because they were so incompetent that they did not comply with statutory bidding requirements.”

The restaurant’s filing notes that the 2018 lease itself stated that the restaurant’s original and current location “suffers from significant structural deficiencies, defects, and deterioration, which is well beyond normal wear and tear and not cause by lack of maintenance or repair, that renders the original location unsuitable for the lessee’s intended use and occupancy for the remainder of the present term of the lease agreement.”

Captain’s BBQ’s attorney has asked the judge to compel depositions of Flagler County Attorney Al Hadeed and County Administrator Jerry Cameron.

Perkins has not yet issued a ruling on that request.

Car lovers set up camp at the Speedway for 47th Turkey Run

rom the sublime to the surreal, the 47th-annual Daytona Turkey Run saw over 6,000 vintage, classic and muscle cars, buses, trucks and the random boat setup house at Daytona International Speedway’s infield for the Thanksgiving weekend. Spectators could enjoy a beer served from an oversized truck or get homemade ice cream churned by a John Deere tractor.

Even though many local events have been canceled or poorly attended due to the risks of COVID-19, registration for the Turkey Run Car Show, Car Corral, Artisan Alley and Food Vending were sold out. In comparison to previous years, it seemed like business as usual for the car show-swap meet hybrid whose tag line boasts “the largest combined car show and swap meet in the USA.” Sunday slowed considerably at the venue, but that did not deter the remaining car clubs parked on the east side of the track near Turn 4. Palm Coast Cruisers was one of the diehard clubs staying

until the end even though there was only one other club riding it out in the Green Lot. Cruisers is currently run

by President Steve Lancour.

Most of the Cruisers attending the Turkey Run hire professional mechanics, restorers and auto body gurus to build their pristine vehicles.

Lancour, on the other hand, has been a mechanic since the age of 14 and continues to work on his own cars which means a total of 56 years in. He paid $750 for his current El Camino which was waterlogged by Hurricane Irene in Vermont. Eight years and $15,000 later, he does not regret his purchase.

Lancour is a retired Vietnam Veteran but his commitment and devotion to his car club puts him close to a regular work week schedule.

“We are a true car club. One month we went to 17 shows,” Lancour said.

Esposito’s zeal for Palm Coast Cruisers and state-of-the-art cars is evident. She said: “This is a great time for car enthusiasts to get together and hang out, enjoy the cars and talk car stuff.”

rmond Beach resident Bill Fletcher’s beard is one of his trademarks.

He’s been growing it for over a year, ever since his hair started to grow back following his battle with cancer. And on Saturday, Dec. 12, the owner of Fletcher’s Irish Pub will be shaving it off for charity.

The first “Shave for the Brave event” will raise money for the Live Like Cameron Foundation, a Palm Coast-based nonprofit created in the memory of Cameron Fulling, who died just a few days before his 10th birthday in 2017, seven years after he was diagnosed with brain cancer. The foundation provides financial assistance and care packages to families with children that have been diagnosed with cancer.

Fletcher often holds commu-

nity events and fundraisers at his pub. However, because of his own experience with cancer and the fact he met Cameron before his death, this fundraiser holds special meaning.

“This one I’m taking extremely personal and pushing as hard as I can,” Fletcher said.

In October, he celebrated a year of being cancer-free.

The beard-shaving Christmas fundraising event will occur after the Ormond Beach Backyard Highland Games planned for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ormond Beach Masonic Lodge, located at 270 Kenilworth Ave. Fletcher’s team is competing against the highland game participants, who are calling themselves “Clan Kringle.”

Fletcher currently has 12 people on his team, including his dad and brother, who Fletcher said would have never grown a beard if it wasn’t for a good cause.

On the day of the event, people may donate $100 to have their beard shaved, or join a fundraising team. The participating barbers are Bardon Castaldi of Proper Barber Co. and Aaron Shook of the RustyRazor barbershop.

Participating businesses also donated gift certificates and coupons for the families served by Live Like Cameron.

Putting together a fundraiser during the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t been easy, but Fletcher said they just had to be creative. He’d been wanting to hold an event for the Live Like Cameron foundation for a year, but the previous event had to be canceled due to Hurricane Dorian.

The morning after the memorial service, my daughter asked for pancakes. I hesitated. Pancakes are for weekends, when you have more time. But then I thought of Natalie, and I decided to take the extra time.

I made the pancakes and we had a dance party before we got dressed and I signed her into school at 9:07.

Guess what? The smile on her face was well worth the wagging fingers and the dirty dishes I left in my sink as I corralled them out the door.

So to my fellow moms, I’m giving you this gentle reminder: Life is chaos, but it’s beautiful chaos. Don’t forget to say “I love you.” Take the time for another hug. Stop for a second to breathe them in. Laugh until your stomach hurts. Get on the floor, on their level.. Snuggle in a little closer. Make the pancakes. Play hooky. Tomorrow is not a guarantee.

Last week, I attended the memorial service of a friend of mine from college. She was my age (33), she was a mother, a wife, a daughter, a friend, a mentor, a hell of a ball player, and a bright light in any room.

Her dad, who I worked with at the college, always reminded me of my own and so I think that’s why his speech hit me the hardest. He made us all giggle, laugh and remember Natalie in the way that we all should -- with smiles on our faces. But then he finished with a mic drop. (Isn’t that the phrase the kids are using these days?)

He told us that the morning of Natalie’s passing, he had breakfast with her and her littles. He said that, as most parents do, he dishes out hugs and kisses and “I love you’s” when he parts ways with his children and grandchildren. He paused, and told us, with tears running down, that that morning when he left, he didn’t. He didn’t take the 5 seconds it takes to say “I love you,” and hours later, learned that he’d never have the chance again.

This broke me and everyone else in the room, and likely you right now. I felt shattered and so called out. I’m

American Association of University Women Flagler nominated Alice Scott Abbott of Bunnell for the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame this year. By August, she was one of 10 finalists recommended by the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. On Nov. 24, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced this year’s selections for the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame, and Alice Scott Abbott, formerly of Bunnell, is one of the three.

She will be inducted to the 2020 Florida Women’s Hall of Fame on Jan. 28, 2021. For the first time in three years, Tallahassee will host the event, and, thanks to COVID-19, a virtual ceremony will be held.

For more than 20 years, Alice Scott Abbott worked to protect wages for women and girls, bring an end to the legal sale of liquor, enforce moral laws, stop trafficking of women and girls, and secure the vote for women. By 1913, she and her husband, George Abbott, left Missouri’s winters, bound for Florida’s sunshine.

When she wasn’t crisscrossing Florida for the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and Woman Suffrage, she devoted her time as the music teacher at the First United Methodist Church and the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Bunnell. She organized

Flagler County’s first WCTU and proceeded to form a Loyal Temperance Legion for Flagler County’s youth. She even had time to plant strawberries.

Alice Scott Abbott represented Bunnell as a “delegate-at-large” at the 40th-annual Convention of the National Women’s Christian Temperance Union, held in Asbury park, New Jersey. In 1914, Florida’s WCTU President had named her as “superintendent of this district.” According to newspaper accounts, she traveled more than 17,000 miles to advance suffrage for women.

Once the 19th Amendment was ratified, her efforts resulted in voter registration and education for nearly 200 Flagler County women, 52 of whom were African American. She longed to be able to instruct the “blessed women” of Flagler and cast her vote; unfortunately, her health failed.

She died days before the Nov. 2, 1920 election.

IMAGINE SCHOOL SUPPORTS STAFF WITH 21-DAY SELF-CARE CHALLENGE Teaching during a global pandemic has given educators new obstacles to overcome as they find the best ways to educate their students both online and in the classrooms. At Imagine School Town Center, the administration saw that students in both platforms were happy and excited and wanted to take care of their staff and ensure they were caring for themselves and taking time to relax, according to LaToya Taite-Headspeth, registrar at the school.

The initiative they came up with — the 21 Day Self-Care Challenge — was to simply remind their staff to take a moment each day and do something for themselves. Each day teachers and staff members

chose an activity, completed it, and put it into a basket. The challenges ranged from 30 minutes of exercise to letting yourself cry.

The names of staff members who completed all 21 days were entered into a drawing. The administration asked for donations so they could give out prizes, and were overwhelmed with the generosity of their community.

They were able to create two gift baskets for the first-place winners and give two teachers gift cards for second place.

Contributors included the Garcia family, ShinyShell Car Wash, Bunnell Supply and Feed, Patty’s Pottery, Dr. Patrick Reed Chiropractor, and New Spring Chiropractic.

In a case of a little bit of beginner’s luck, and a lot of beginner’s grit, the 6U Flagler Bulldogs Youth Football team won the Division 2 Indian River Youth Football and Cheer Conference (IRYFCC) championship with a score of 24-19 against the FLA Vikings. The championship game took place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in Citra.

Flagler Bulldogs Youth Football is a new tackle football program started this year by Ricshay Nelson Sr. Nelson is the president, with Caleb Barker vice president, Ricshay Nelson Jr. and Marquis Murphy athletic directors. The program had over 80 kids sign up, ages 5-12.

The 6U team, for ages 5 and 6, is coached by Caleb Barker and Art Smith.

The young athletes on the 6U team had never played football before this year. They went from their first practices in July, to playing in their first game, still unsure of what to do, to winning a championship, in a few short months.

said Ashley Perkins, head administrator. “We call them fearless because no matter how big the other team 6U kids were, the Bulldogs 6U played their hardest.”

FPC falls to Ponte Vedra F PC hosted Ponte Vedra on Dec. 1 for the first home game of the season. Ponte Vedra got off to an early start, and although the Bulldogs continued to battle over the course of the game, FPC lost 51-61.

The team made one final push in the final minutes, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide of the game.

The team will next travel to Seabreeze High School on Dec. 8. JV is scheduled to play at 6 with varsity taking to the court at 7:30.
