WANTED MAN FLAGS DOWN COP TO ASK DIRECTIONS, GETS ARRESTED 7 a.m. Intersection of US 1 and Palm Coast Parkway Possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. A Sheriff’s Office corporal was driving north on US 1 near Palm Coast Parkway when he noticed a car pulled over in the south lane. The drive was waving at the deputy and pointing to his phone.

The corporal approached the driver, who said he needed directions to an address in DeLand.

The deputy checked the location of the address, and also looked up information on the driver — who turned out to be wanted on a charge of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

The corporal arrested the man, who said he didn’t know he was a convicted felon. The corporal found the weapon — a flare gun — in the man’s waistband.

What are the three things you are most thankful for? It’s not too hard to come up with that list for me: my family, my faith, my health.

DRUNK WOMAN SCRATCHES GAS STATION CLERK 5:32 p.m. First block of Old Kings Road North Assault. A clerk was working at a gas station when a drunk woman came up to the counter and plunked down two cases of water — so hard that both broke, spilling water on the floor.

The woman, swearing, then told him to clean up the mess, saying “it was his job.” She then got another two cases and bought them, but, when she got to the parking lot, dropped both of those as well.

She asked the clerk for help.

He declined.

But another patron act the staton noticed that someone had left a pocketbook behind, and the clerk approached her with it to verify if it was hers.

She grabbed his left forearm to take it, severely scratching his arm and drawing blood, before grabbing the pocketbook and fleeing in a pickup truck.

Planning board opts for wide ‘view protection zones’ for proposed development on former Matanzas course.

A

proposed development of up to 280 homes on the former Matanzas Woods Golf Course property must abide by restrictions designed to protect existing residents’ views, Palm Coast planning board members decided during a Nov. 18 meeting.

The Planning and Land Development Regulation Board sided with city staff’s preferred restrictions on the proposed Lakeview Estates development on nine of the 10 tracts which would comprise it. On the 10th tract, which runs between U.S. 1 and London Drive, the board voted to allow for the developer’s concept plan but with a widened buffer.

The proposed development has prompted opposition from community members who want the land to be converted back into a golf course or are concerned that the development would degrade their views or their property values.

“People paid so much more money for those lots for those kinds of protections, and to have them torn away — you have to understand the passion here,” resident Justin Simmons said during the meeting’s public comment period. “... We don’t want to say ‘No development,’ but you don’t just rape the land of all of its natural resources to see how much you can cram in. The deer walk through my backyard almost nightly. They won’t exist with this plan right here. I’m not saying ‘No development,’ but you also have to protect the citizens.”

The proposed community would consist largely of single-family houses on an acre each, with some townhomes in the southwest corner and institutional uses along U.S. 1.

The property was formerly an 18-hole Arnold Palmer golf course created by ITT in 1985, but the course closed for good in 2007,

“My client is willing to continue to work with the city on creating a project that is in the best interests of not only the city, but the residents up there — and there are some things that we can do, and we’re open to suggestions.”

according to city documents.

By the time its current owner — Matanzas GC Palm Coast LLC, headed by developer Alexander Ustilovsky — bought it in April 2019, the property’s overgrown conditions had become a frequent target of complaints from residents.

NO ALTERNATIVES?

The Nov. 18 meeting wasn’t the first time the development has come before the planning board: The board also discussed it on Sept. 30 but tabled it without making a decision, instead advising the developer to work with

city staff to find solutions in areas where they differed.

But the development that came before the board again on Nov. 18 was largely unaltered from the previous version, a fact that prompted some board members to ask attorney Michael Chiumento, who represented the developer, why the developer hadn’t taken the board’s suggestion to present other options.

Chiumento said that hadn’t been possible: Although Ustilovsky was willing to compromise, Chiumento said, city staff wasn’t willing to bend its stated requirements.

“We’re saying, ‘Please, work

with us,’” Chiumento said, “and we’re getting, ‘We’re not changing anything.’ ... It’s very difficult to send out engineers and planners to come back to somebody and they say, ‘You didn’t need to do anything because we’re not changing anything.’”

A planning board member said that the developer could have presented alternatives to the planning board even if city staff wasn’t interested.

That, she said, would have shown the board that the developer was willing to address the issues that concerned the community. She said she found it concerning that the developer had instead returned with the same concept.

Her statement prompted applause from the audience.

“I understand your point,” Chiumento said. “... When you gave direction to us and you said, ‘Go find something in between with staff,’ and they said, ‘You can’t,’ maybe we didn’t think through, or I didn’t think through, to come

back with new proposals to you.

But, as we said all along, we’re open: We’re willing to continue to design and modify if given an opportunity.”

DIFFERING TRACTS

The planning board voted 7-0 on Nov. 18 in favor of city staff’s recommendations for all 10 tracts except Tract 9, where it opted to allow the developer’s proposed concept plan with an added buffer requirement and height limitation. Aside from Tract 9, the largest differences between the developer’s proposal and city’s staff’s had concerned Tracts 1 and 3, where staff preferred significantly wider view protection zones and more limited development. The city’s code requires view protection zones, but doesn’t state how large they must be.

Tract 9 runs between U.S. 1 and London Drive, and the developer plans to use it for institutional uses. City staff wanted to limit development to the northern third of that parcel, which the developer said wouldn’t be workable because that part of the site isn’t buildable land.

The planning board opted to allow the developer to build on other portions of Tract 9, but with the requirement that the developer include a 100-foot view protection zone and limit the building height to a maximum of 35 feet.

The proposed development must receive the Palm Coast City Council’s approval before construction begins.

The Town Center Community Development District will pay $114,000 to have a deputy assigned exclusively to patrol Town Center. A satellite Flagler County Sheriff’s Office facility may also be set up there, also at the expense of the community development district.

The Palm Coast City Council approved the arrangement by unanimous vote as part of the council’s consent agenda at its Nov. 17 meeting.

County Sheriff’s Office and the Community Development District states that the CDD will pay the city for the new deputy, and the city will then pay the FCSO as part of the city’s ongoing agreement with the law enforcement agency.

Palm Coast pays extra for staffing levels in excess of what the FCSO provides in other areas of the county.

“In no instance shall Palm Coast be responsible for or obligated to expend its own funds to pay for the cost of the additional deputy or the

Satellite Office, which may be set up in Town Center,” the agreement states. “The City will invoice the CDD monthly and then the City will submit payment to FCSO for these enhanced services.”

Including the new deputy for which it will be reimbursed, the city will be paying the FCSO approximately $4.15 million this year for law enforcement services that include the stationing of 25 deputies and another six higher ranking officers in Palm Coast.

Branquinho appointed vice mayor

City Councilman Eddie Branquinho is Palm Coast’s vice mayor this year. Branquinho is taking over the rotating position from Councilman Nick Klufas, and was appointed vice mayor at a council meeting on Nov. 17.

Klufas and Branquinho are the only two council members, other than Mayor Milissa Holland, who are not new to the five-member board.

"For our two new elected officials, and one returning, just a comment: Two major things that you need to do: One, look back in history. ... What things were done, and why, to make this the great community that it is? And secondly, looking forward: What can you do to add to this great community? It’s an awesome responsibility. People are watching closely. Remember, your responsibility is to the community as a whole."

Advocates push School Board for protections for trans students JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Local families have created a petition to push the Flagler County School District to add gender identity to the existing list of protected characteristics in its nondiscrimination statement, known as Policy 217. Doing so would extend explicit protection to transgender students.

“Policy 217 is enumerated to clearly identify specific classes that are covered under this policy,” the petition’s text states. “We urge to school board to amend the policy to include enumeration for gender identity. ...Please sign this petition to show the school board that the vulnerable LGBT+ students in Flagler County deserve to be protected under Policy 217.”

Parent and advocate Randy Bertrand, whose son is trans, shared the petition ahead of Transgender Awareness Week, which ran through Nov. 20 this year. A total of 216 people had signed it as of Nov. 24.

The district’s existing Policy 217 nondiscrimination statement concerning students became a subject of controversy a year ago when Bertrand and others pushed the district to amend it to include gender identity. The School Board opted not to change the policy, with only one board member, Colleen Conklin, supporting the proposed change. Board members who opposed changing the policy said they believed gender identity would be covered under the current policy, which mentions gender.

But the board has since changed,

Despite efforts to return to normalcy amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Florida continues to see increasing Medicaid enrollment, with an estimate now that as many as 4.6 million people will rely on the health-care program in the upcoming fiscal year, according to the state’s Medicaid office.

A revised projection of enrollment for the 2021-2022 state fiscal year, which will start July 1, includes about 220,000 more people than economists previously projected.

“We are seeing increases still.

Pretty big increases,” Tom Wallace, the state Agency for Health Care Administration’s assistant deputy secretary for Medicaid finance analytics, told members of a panel known as the Social Services Estimating Conference on Nov. 19.

While enrollment in Medicaid programs is increasing nationwide because of the pandemic, Wallace said Florida is experiencing some of the biggest increases. Florida, which did not expand Medicaid eligibility under the federal Affordable Care Act, has seen a 16% increase in enrollment since March.

The surge in enrollment adds to the sour financial situation that will greet lawmakers when they begin the 2021 legislative session in March.

Bertrand and others who spoke during the public comment period of a Nov. 17 School Board meeting said they found the current wording insufficient.

“You’re faced with a decision to address the ambiguous language in 217, or you can sit by and do nothing,” Bertrand said at the meeting. “Look: The winds of change are blowing real strong, and this is going to happen — whether we do it next month, whether we do it in three months, whether we do it in a year, two years, whatever. It’s inevitable.

It’s like gravity. So either you’re dragged into the 2020s, or you choose to step into the 2020s. It’s your decision.”

Florida unemployment rate down; more weeks of aid coming Florida’s unemployment rate dropped in October, reflecting the state’s continued push to reopen businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

But the economic impacts of the pandemic will result in additional weeks of state assistance next year for jobless people.

The state Department of Economic Opportunity on Friday announced a 6.5% unemployment rate for October, down from a revised 7.2% in September. The new rate is based on mid-October data.

Since mid-March, the department has received 4.68 million jobless claims, and Friday’s report estimates 659,000 Floridians qualified as unemployed in October out of a workforce of 10.1 million. That was a reduction of 72,000 from the number of people who qualified as unemployed in September.

“What we are seeing right now is a trend of gaining jobs,” Adrienne Johnston, the department’s chief of the Bureau of Labor Market Statistics, told reporters Friday. “We actually gained a little bit faster in October than we had in the last few months.”

Johnston noted the report doesn’t indicate if people are returning to old jobs or finding new work.

The unemployment rate was 5.7% in Flagler County, 5.9% in Volusia County, 7.2% in Putnam County and 3.7% in St. Johns County.

Experts brace for local COVID wave, prepare for vaccine ‘I’m in good shape, I would say. .... And let me tell you, folks, that COVID kicked my butt,’ Flagler Executive Airport Manager Roy Sieger said.

The COVID-19 spike sweeping across the country is showing up in the form of an increasing local positivity rate, more hospitalizations of people with COVID-like symptoms and more infections at schools, Florida Department of Health-Flagler experts said on Flagler Broadcasting’s “Free For All Friday” Nov. 20.

The county’s positivity rate was up to 7.5%, an increase from 6% a couple weeks before, while 23 students at eight schools had tested positive. Some of those students have been asymptomasatic, but not all.

The health department is seeing about 120-130 new cases per week — double what it was seeing a few weeks ago.

“I want to be the new poster child for this,” Flagler Executive Airport Manager Roy Sieger said on the radio show, where he spoke his recent experience getting COVID-19.

“I’m in good shape, I would say: I never smoked in my life, I run, I walk, I’m very active — and let me tell you, folks, that COVID kicked my butt,” Sieger said. “It knocked me out for three weeks. I got to the point that I couldn’t breathe, and the coughing was so bad. ...

It’s real and it affects people differently.”

One night, he said, “I said to myself, ‘Roy you better take yourself to the hospital or you may not wake up in the morning.’”

“It’s just classic,” said Stephen Bickel, the health department’s medical director. “You can be in good shape, think you’re invulnerable, and really get nailed by this thing. ... The vaccines are coming, but people need to say

uninfected until they get vaccinated. So keep up those practices.

It’s really important. “ Sieger noted that he’d been diligent about wearing a mask and avoided eating out, but believed he got the illness at a doctor’s office.

Meanwhile, FDOH Health Officer Bob Snyder said, the department is beginning vaccine planning in earnest.

The vaccine will first be made available to health care workers and first responders, then will be distributed to the wider population in the second quarter of the spring, around March through May. The Health Department has arranged to use freezers at the Whitney Marine Laboratory to keep the vaccine cold, as it must be stored somewhere between

-70 degrees F and -100.

For distribution, Snyder said, the department will use sites across the county.

The vaccine will be free, and the department will engage in a health messaging campaign to encourage people to get it, Snyder said.

Unlike traditional vaccines that are created with live or dead virus, this one is created from viral messenger RNA, which gets into cells and then uses the cell’s machinery to manufacture spike proteins that trigger an immune response.

It’s “slick technology,” Bickel said.

The department has also received 1,000 Abbott rapid tests that provide results in as little as 20 minutes, and will use those for now on symptomatic patients.

Readers criticize Branquinho, Danko for name-calling L ETTERS

Discordant future of the City Council?

Dear Editor: In addition to the infantile name-calling fiasco between Ed Danko and Eddie Branquinho that occurred at the Nov. 17 City Council meeting, and the resulting consensus that their tirades were both disturbing and embarrassing, it’s also worth noting that this was Danko’s very first day on the job.

And during his debut as a newly elected Councilman, he chose to show up sporting a partisan political mask intentionally telegraphing his political leanings for all to see, and did so, not only on his first day, but also in the midst of a hyperintense national political controversy dividing our country.

In Palm Coast City Council elections, the ballot doesn’t list the party affiliations of the candidates in part for the important reason that once elected, if you don’t leave those affiliations at the door, it’s counterproductive to the success of the council and of the community as a whole.

Danko apparently is refusing to accept the role of the City Council as an inclusive nonpartisan entity that represents us all, irrespective of political leanings, and sadly it appears that he is setting the stage for a discordant and controversial future on the council.

Councilmen, check your egos at the door Dear Editor: I’m writing concerning the front page article about the City Council members calling each other names at the recent swearing in of new members.

I think most people in Palm Coast would agree with me when I say we are tired of our city leaders acting like unruly

children.

It’s time for council members to stop with the namecalling and insults and get on with the business of helping our city more forward. Please, check your egos and your partisan politics at the door and be positive role models. Our children are watching.

Danko and Branquino should apologize Dear Editor: After reading about what transpired between Ed Danko and Eddie Branquinho at the Palm Coast City Council meeting on FlaglerLive, several thoughts came to mind.

First, the deep division of political views is a sign of the times, and Palm Coast is no exception.

Second, everyone knows that elections bring out hardball politics. There were things said by both Milissa Holland and Alan Lowe, with whom Ed Danko was aligned, that were clearly below the belt. Lowe’s campaign charged there was an ongoing investigation into corruption at City Hall. Since he was running for mayor, it was evident to the most casual observer that this attack was aimed at Holland. Other than Branquinho, apparently no other member of the council took offense.

This brings me to my third point, which is temperament. I have known Eddie Branquinho for years. What happened at the City Council meeting was not an anomaly. In my opinion, he doesn’t have the temperament to be a councilman, much less the vice mayor of Palm Coast. The elections are over, the people have spoken. He should take Holland’s example and let it go. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think we have seen the last of this type of outburst from Branquinho.

Ed Danko doesn’t come out of this incident smelling like a rose either. He should have just let Branquinho go on with his tirade. Let the voters render a decision two years from now. By responding, Danko became part of the story. Both should apologize to the remaining members of the council and to the citizens of Palm Coast. Their behavior is unbecoming of the office they hold.

He said, “I’m anticipating future meetings will be conducted with the proper decorum expected of a City Council meeting.”

Branquinho: ‘I do not regret it’ Branquinho, on the other hand, did not back down from his insistence that Danko apologize for calling City Hall corrupt.

“I do not regret it,” Branquinho said, referring to his confrontation during the Nov. 17 meeting. “And the reason I do not regret confronting the other councilman in question is for the simple fact that I have no other way to talk to him without violating Sunshine Law. I did not want to interfere while the councilman in question during the campaign because I didn’t want to be accused of interfering, so, the first opportunity I had to ask him why he called me cor-

rupt, I did.”

Branquinho acknowledged that Danko didn’t single him out in calling City Hall corrupt, but that was not sufficient for Branquinho. “I’m part of City Hall like he is now, and you don’t call me corrupt without explaining. Prove I was part of corruption.”

He said he doesn’t believe City Hall is corrupt and that many staff members have thanked him for standing up for City Hall.

He added that Danko is “going to be straightened out from the beginning.”

Branquinho intends to continue to call Danko “Councilman Corrupt,” and he doesn’t mind if Danko continues to call him “Councilman Full of Crap.”

“I agree with him because, at least once a day, in the morning, I am,” Branquinho said. “If he doesn’t apologize or prove that I’m corrupt, he’s going to have to swallow his words — rectally.”

When asked whether he feels it’s bad for the city to have such contention on the City Council, he again didn’t back down. “The only thing I have is my name, and nobody’s going to mess with it,” he said.

“I’m proud of being an honest man.”

Branquinho ran on a platform of anticorruption two years ago. He said that when he was an elected official in a previous city, five members of his board were indicted for corruption, but he was clean.

“I do not take corruption lightly,” he said.

Will the contention continue? “All the man has to do is say ‘I’m sorry,’ and everything’s going back to normal,” Branquinho said.

Catalytic converter thieves damage work vehicles The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has responded to five calls for service in the past three months where a catalytic converter has been stolen from a vehicle, including work trucks from the Flagler Humane Society and Paradise Landscaping and Nursery.

The job of a catalytic converter is to turn harmful pollutants into safer emissions before they exit through the exhaust. The parts are expensive and are often stolen and re-sold for a profit.

Work trucks are commonly targeted as they sit idle for a period of time, allowing the thief time to commit the crime.

On Nov. 7, an employee of the Flagler Humane Society reported that the catalytic converter from a work van had been sawed off overnight.

It is estimated that it will cost $2,500 to replace the part and the repair the van.

On Nov. 16, the owner of Paradise Landscaping and Nursery reported that the catalytic converter from a work tractor trailer had been cut off overnight.

It is estimated that it will cost $20,000 to replace the part and the repair the vehicle.

Additional thefts have been reported to the Bunnell Police Department and in Volusia County.

To help prevent these thefts, park your vehicle in the garage if possible or in a well-lit area.

Crime Stoppers tipsters may be eligible for a reward up to $5,000.

Flagler’s COVID testing schedule

The Florida Department of Health in Flagler County will not be testing for COVID-19 during the Thanksgiving weekend; testing will resume Monday, Nov. 30, with morning testing at Cattleman’s Hall and after-

noon testing across from 120 Airport Road. For the balance of that week, the department will offer testing twice daily Tuesday through Friday.

Residents should remember that there are other locations in Flagler County that provide COVID-19 testing, including two Mediquick locations, CentraCare and CVS Pharmacies.

Some of these sites will be open on Thanksgiving, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 26-29).

Please confirm with each site in advance as most require appointments for COVID testing.

To make an appointment with the DOH at Cattleman’s Hall, call 386-437-7350 ext./option 0 for scheduling. The call center is open weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

FCSO arrests five women in prostitution sting Deputies arrested five women on prostitution charges on Nov. 19 in an undercover sting. None of the women were from Flagler County.

The deputies caught the women by posting ads on websites “known by law enforcement to be frequently used to solicit prostitution,” according to deputies’ reports, then contacting the women via text message, meeting up with them and arresting them after they agreed to accept money for sex acts.

Two of the women were 49; the others were 31, 36 and 41.

They were from St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, Middleburg and Jacksonville. One, the 31-year-old, was also charged for possession of cocaine after she admitted to having crack in her purse.

Flagler County Fire Rescue Firefighter Ronald Titus is no newcomer to deploying out west to fight wildfires, but this was an assignment of “firsts” – first time assigned to a federal team, first time working as crew boss, and first time to the Sequoia National Forest.

“This was a special deployment for me,” said Titus, a nine-year veteran with Fire Rescue who has deployed seven times. “It’s nice to put my training into practice, and help fellow firefighters across the country.”

Titus was deployed from Oct. 20 to Nov. 5 to work the “Castle Fire” in the Sequoia National Forest as crew boss for the “Black Eagles #3.”

By the time Titus demobilized, the Castle Fire had grown to 171,023 acres.

“It was something working in the areas of Redwood, Ponderosa, Sequoia Crest and Pier Point,” Titus said. “I like being able to bring the knowledge and experience I gain back to Flagler County.”

Titus was praised by Interim Fire Chief Joe King. “Ronald Titus is very motivated and enthusiastic,” King said. “He enjoys his

The Palm Coast Fire Department invites youth ages 13 to 17 to apply to the new Junior Firefighter Program for a hands-on experience at learning about a career in firefighting and public safety.

Teens must be meet age requirements by Jan. 1, 2021.

Applications are due the first of the year and can be picked up at Fire Station 25. The Junior Firefighters will sit for a formal panel interview for acceptance into the program.

Space is limited to 20 students, and parents must provide permission. The program will be staffed and managed by the career members of the Fire Department. Students will attend weekly meetings 6-8 p.m. at Fire Station 25, covering topics from an established curriculum. Additionally, one field day will be held per month on a scheduled Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon for hands on skills and operations.

Junior Firefighters will use real fire equipment as well as be CPR certified and practice medical skills and evaluations. They will also be required to attend physical training prior to each class.

Students must also maintain a 2.0 GPA and are required to bring report cards to meetings when they are issued.

Students can stay invested

until 18 years of age, when they will have all of the knowledge and abilities to complete their state test requirements for Firefighter and EMT, affording them a career.

“Establishing a youth program will help our department form stronger bonds within our community and teach participants critical skills such as leadership, teamwork and responsibility,” said Chief Jerry Forte. “In addition, junior programs provide youth with invaluable experience and education in fire and emergency medical services, and members of these programs often become life-long supporters of their department.”

In preparation for Thanksgiving, the Grace Community Food Pantry was once again the hub for Feed Flagler, now in its 12th year.

“I feel like God has been so good to us that we want to give back to those in need,” said Feed Flagler Team Leader and Grace Volunteer Coordinator Dottie Colletta. “If I ever feel exhausted, I just remember: ‘There’s so many families in need. You can’t afford to be exhausted.’”

In 2020, Feed Flagler raised over $30,000, the largest amount ever, to give out 955 gift cards worth $25 each and have some left over to start next year’s campaign. In addition, the group will be feeding 425 hot Thanksgiving to-go meals for families, distributed at local churches. Fifty gift cards were also provided for Flagler Schools families.

Colletta pointed out that WinnDixie in Palm Coast contributed $5,000 as well as a 5% gift-card discount. Flowers Bakery donated rolls, and Lowe’s donated bottled water.

Colletta was joined by fellow Team Leaders Diane Dieter and Deborah Snedeker in the effort.

Michele Seyfort, of Palm Coast United Methodist Church, and Pastor Terry Wines, of First United Methodist Church in Bunnell, were also instrumental.

GRAND HAVEN VOLUNTEERS

On Friday, Nov. 20, food was trucked from Winn-Dixie to the food pantry at 245 Education Way, where volunteers from the Grand Haven Women’s Club sorted it for distribution.

Annette Felahis and Patty Hartsfield are the co-chairwomen for the Grand Haven Women’s Club, which recently raised over $600 and contributed 677 pounds of food.

Hartsfield said the club has also volunteered at PCUMC’s Our Father’s Table, which feeds 50 homeless families every Saturday.

humility,” said Hartsfield, a former middle school educator. “And it gave us such an awareness of the need in Flagler County.” The club also has collected cleaning products, gift cards and toiletries for the Family Life Center.

Grand Haven Women’s Club member Terry Burde also assisted with the Nov. 20 distribution. A former nurse recruiter, Burde said she became motivated to volun-

teer when she cycled down U.S. 1 with some other club members and saw the line of cars waiting to receive food at the Grace Community Food Pantry.

“I know what we’re doing means something,” Burde said.

Another club member, Gail Naworal, is a former principal from Maryland. She has been motivated to help with the Grace Backpack Program, which sends six to eight pounds food home with school children, so that they have enough to eat over the weekend. Over the past seven years, the program has helped 15,000 school children.

“There are so many children who rely on the schools for their food,” Naworal said.

Colletta was grateful for the efforts of all the volunteers, but she said the effort isn’t limited to Thanksgiving. Because of the pandemic, the number of families assisted by the food pantry each month has gone up from about 3,000 per month to 5,500 per month.

Like Burde, many others have seen the long lines of cars and felt compelled to call. The pantry isn’t taking on new volunteers beyond

the 100 or so it already has, Colletta said, but monetary donations are still welcome. Canned goods can also be dropped off at certain times, but money is the best way to help because the pantry can buy food inexpensively through Second Harvest Food Bank.

As the sorting concluded, Food Pantry Director Charles Silano, pastor of Grace Tabernacle Ministries, entered the warehouse after driving a forklift to unload another Second Harvest truck.

His general absence from Feed Flagler is both a reminder of the effort he undertakes with weekly food distribution, and it’s also a testament to the success of others in taking over the logistics.

“These are the best volunteers ever,” he said. Pointing to Colletta, he said, “She tells me, ‘This has to be done,’ I forget it, and she reminds me. They’ve gotten really good at this. I rarely have to oversee anything.”

“There’s a need, and Jesus has called us,” Colletta said.

The Grand Haven Women’s Club collected 677 pounds of food for Feed Flagler.

I know personally, we are keeping our Thanksgiving small, with just Brady, Elijah and me.

I am sad. Can I just say that?

This year has already been the most challenging of my life and now we can’t be with our family for the holidays. I wish that I could fly to Pennsylvania to visit my parents and show Elijah what fall in the northeast looks like. I wish I could go black Friday shopping with my mom. I wish all of our extended family could be in one place. Don’t get me wrong, I am 100% letting myself feel sad, and man do I miss my mom;

however, I am not going to let it ruin this day.

I plan to start the day at the beach, watching the sunrise with my friend Kari, just like we have been every Thursday for the last several months. It’s one of the things that brings joy to my life and keeps me grounded. I find that it is easier to focus on all of the amazing things in my life while watching the new day begin. The rest of the day doesn’t have much of a plan with the exception of FaceTiming family and spending much needed time with Brady and Elijah.

So today, on this Thanksgiving, I am choosing to be grateful for time with my son, an intimate family celebration, and technology that will allow for us to “visit” with family we can’t be with in person.

I am sending you warm thoughts and happy wishes for a Thanksgiving that, even though it may look a little different, is filled with moments to be grateful for!

Palm Coast Parks and Recreation is calling on residents to showcase their outdoor decorating skills at their home in a unique competition called Holiday Light Fight. So break out all of the lights, garland, inflatable snowmen, and more to participate in this festive contest.

“As a father, I love to take my kids around to see holiday lights, but sometimes it is hard to find where the big displays are located,” said Recreation Specialist Jared Dawson. “I really wanted to provide not only my kids, but our community with a fun way to enjoy all of the lights displays in town. We can all decorate our houses and then families can use our maps to plan out a night of holiday light sightseeing!”

Parks & Recreation is also working with the city’s Geographic Information System (GIS) division to create a map showing residents where they can go to see all of the light displays. To submit your house in

City Repertory Theatre is bringing the “monster musical,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” to the Palm Coast Arts Foundation stage.

Billed as a Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical, “Little Shop of Horrors” has devoured the hearts of theater goers for over 30 years. The 1982 musical is based on the 1960 film of the same name, featuring rock-and-roll style

songs written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, of Disney fame.

The plot centers on a florist shop that acquires a mysterious plant that feeds on humans.

In the City Repertory Theatre’s production, Alexander Loucks and Chelsea Jo Conrad have been cast in the lead roles of Seymour Krelborn and Audrey. John Sbordone directs, and Ben Beck is the music director.

Mike Mangum pulls his emergency brake and whips the steering wheel to drift his modified BMW across the asphalt. That acrid puff of black smoke from the burning tires? He loves it, but he acknowledges, “It’s an acquired smell.”

The 31-year-old racing enthusiast began a new high-adrenaline journey Nov. 14 when he opened his own small business, Mangum Motorsports. It’s great because he has no boss; on the other hand, he has no paycheck unless cars roll into the shop.

“It’s absolutely terrifying,” he said with a grin during a Nov. 19 interview.

The full-service repair shop does everything from oil changes to complicated engine work.

It’s also a specialty speed shop, offering “everything from mild to wild.”

Mangum’s passion for all things automotive started when his parents bought him a junkyard engine and a junkyard Ford Ranger and challenged him to

put the two together and make it work. He was 14. He dove right in and fell in love with it. That led him to working in other shops and going to WyoTech in Wyoming and then in California for more training. He’s ASE and A/C certified and has a degree in automotive service management.

Along the way he got into drag racing and gunned an Eagle Talon at 145 mph to cover a quarter mile in 10.9 seconds. Next he picked up autocross and worked at the technical aspects of course driving.

After one autocross race, he saw a drifting event and got a ride with another driver, both in and out of control, spinning left-thenright and pumping out plenty of burned rubber.

He has since competed in drifting himself and is looking forward to his next competition next year, with his BMW. Meanwhile, he’s welcoming customers to his shop, in the Steel Rail Industrial Park, which is off Otis Hunter Road (between Whiteview and Royal Palms parkways). Both boys are participants in the community partnership between the Flagler County Police Athletic League and Lions’ Pride Boxing, established in 2019.

Lions’ Pride Boxing is located at Marvin’s Garden, 4601 E. Moody Blvd., in Bunnell, and vowed to help “box out crime” by helping kids deal with displaced anger, improve self confidence, and learn the fundamentals of boxing.

The Sandcrabs’ first and only score of the night came during the first half. FPC had a slow start and struggled for a time, but the team was able to rally, bringing the score to a tie and then eventually taking the lead.

The Bulldogs are now 3-0 on the season. The team will have a short break from competition and then resume on Nov. 30 when they host Ridge Community High School.

atanzas fought hard in front of the home crowd during Nov. 20’s playoff game against Mainland High School. Big performances by Jordan Mills, Ethan Dattilo and Noah Cundiff helped keep the Pirates in the fight and on the board.

Despite Matanzas’ efforts, Mainland began to change the narrative late during the second half after being tied 28-28. The Pirates were unable to answer the Bucs’ three touchdowns. Those three touchdowns would end the 2020 season for Matanzas despite their successful and historic run.

TRIBUTES

Charles E. Whitney, of Palm Coast, Florida passed peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2020. Charles was 76. Charles was born on October 12, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of Robert and Lena (Griffin) Whitney.

Charles was a devoted, loving husband to his wife, Elizabeth (Mayer) Whitney. His two children, Dawn Marie Whitney Fregosa and William Robert Whitney were his life and his legacy. His grandchildren, Laurel Rain Vilencia, Karolyn Elizabeth Whitney, and Richard Charles Anthony Fregosa III (Tres’) were Papa’s pride—always and forever.

Charles was a United States Air Force veteran, serving his beloved country as a true patriot from 1964-1968. He served in Southeast Asia with the 1st Mob from 1966-1968 with the motto “First in, last out”, ultimately causing his disabilities due to chemical exposure during his tour of duty in Vietnam.

Charles was a field engineer for IBM at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, installing IBM computers and Purdue’s computer laboratories until 1972. Chuck also served IBM at Fairfield Manufacturing in Lafayette, when in 1972 he left IBM to join the Fairfield Manufacturing maintenance team. Chuck had a growing family and had the vision to be a part of a company where he made life-long friends in a community offering the best for himself and his family. In 1983 Charles retired from

Fairfield to become the first Maintenance Supervisor of the new Caterpillar Large Engine Plant in Lafayette, Indiana. After continuing his education with a mechanical and electrical engineering degree, Charles retired from Caterpillar’s Large Engine Plant in 2004, as a Senior Design Engineer.

Chuck was a brilliant engineer and a precise mathematician.

Charles was instrumental in the founding of the Tippecanoe Soccer Association for boys and girls in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He was a volunteer with Sagamore Boy Scouts, Sycamore Girl Scout Council, Sycamore Girl Scout Camp, caregiver for his mother, Lena and his mother-in-law, Margaret (Farro) Mayer, golfer, hunter, pool player, swimmer, boater, chess, cribbage and card playing enthusiast, Lafayette Catholic School supporter, devoted friend to his Indianapolis childhood friends, Dayton Flyer parent, Purdue sports and Indi-

anapolis Colts fan. Charles was a member of the American Legion for 47 years, a member of the VFW, and of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Chuck always was joking, and playing pranks on his friends and loved ones. Chuck loved to travel for his employer, with his family and friends, always making the trip an adventure.

Liz’s mother, Margaret, lived with Chuck and Liz. They enjoyed the warmth and sunshine of Florida, family, new and old friends, the beagles, golf, the beach, shelling, and absorbing the love of family in their Palm Coast home.

Charles, always with a beagle at his side, is survived by his wife, Liz, of 52 years; daughter Dawn Marie Whitney Fregosa, son-in-law, Richard A. Fregosa Jr., grandson, Richard Charles Anthony Fregosa III, granddaughter, Laurel Rain Vilencia; son, William Robert Whitney, granddaughter, Karolyn Elizabeth Whitney, sister-in-law, Judy (Green) Whitney, Nephew Michael Whitney and sons, Niece Laura (Whitney) Beal and sons, Nieces Diana Fugate (Jay) and her sister, Angela and family. Charles was the “Whitney branch” of the 46 Mayer family survivors who dearly love their “Indianapolis” friend, brother, uncle and great uncle, Chuck. Also surviving are three godchildren: Benjamin Rushing, Kaytlan (Crowe) Ruben, Andrew Grupe; and many lifelong friendships throughout Indiana, Illinois, Florida, and California.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lena, his older brothers Robert and Merle. His dear friend and father-in-law, Louis J. Mayer Sr. and mother-in-law, Margaret Mayer, sister-in-law

Margaret Mary Hoff, dear friend and brother-in-law Ronald Kramer, nephews: Jacob Mayer, Ethan and Zachary Hoff, Carter Givens, Gabriel Rushing and, goddaughter, Abigail Crowe.

As a disabled Vietnam veteran, Charles lived at the Clyde E. Lassen Florida VA Nursing Home in St. Augustine, Florida since August 2015, where Liz spent five to six days a week with “her man”.

A celebration of Charles’ life will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, December 30th at Lohman Funeral Home at 220 Palm Coast Parkway SW, Palm Coast, Florida 32137.

Inurnment will be in Jacksonville National Cemetery on February 15, 2021. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Lohman Funeral Home, Palm Coast, Florida (386)449-1100.

lagler Palm Coast’s head coach Travis Roland has led the Bulldogs to the playoffs four years straight, which is an FPC record. But he will have to wait at least another season to get that coveted first win. The Bulldogs (4-4) fell to the Sandalwood Saints 28-19 on Friday, Nov. 20, at Sandalwood.

After taking an early lead with a Dakoda Wagner touchdown, the Bulldogs allowed 21 unanswered

points, all on ill-advised plays. Sandalwood scored on a fumble return, a blocked field goal, and then after converting a fourth down.

FPC continued to rally with two more Wagner touchdowns, but two failed 2-point conversions, failure to capitalize on a blocked punt that set them up inside Sandalwood’s 10-yard line, and a late turnover kept them from the win.

TRIBUTES

Robert Eugene Williams was born on April 30th, 1931. He departed this earth on November 9th, 2020 after a long battle with cancer.

“Bob” as he was affectionately called by his friends, was one of three children born to Rev. Moses Williams and Rev. Mary Williams. He was the youngest of three children and was preceded in death by both his sister Mrs. Marie Smith and brother Mr. JD Williams, both of Jacksonville Florida.

He was also preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Ms. Deborah Renee Daniels of Jesup, Georgia.

Bob was born in Ocala Florida in 1931.

During his childhood, his family moved to Fort Lauderdale where he attended high school. His family was so committed to doing the work of GOD, that they started several churches including the “Church of Pure Righteousness”, also in Fort Lauderdale. He was a devoted son and described himself as a proud “Mama’s boy”. He purchased several homes for his parents and saw to their every need as long as they lived.

At 19, Bob moved to New York City with hopes to obtain a good job and to provide for his family. His mother packed him a shoe box of fried chicken and bread, blessed and prayed for him and he was on his way to the big city. Once in New York,

he found work immediately as a furniture maker. The leather chairs he engineered are still sold today for thousands of dollars.

Bob obtained a position as a bus driver for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He loved to drive and worked with the MTA for over 30 years; retiring in 1990.

Bob worked so much overtime for the simple joy of driving and also to support his family. He was a friendly man who enjoyed meeting new people throughout his travels. Extra “runs” on the bus were called “ soap” and he earned the nickname “Soapy” because he worked so much.

Bob developed a love of politics and was very involved in his party for the entire time he was in New York. He carried that love with him when he relocated with his wife to Palm Coast in 1991. Bob was interested in current affairs and the fair treatment of all. He became a member of his local NAACP chapter in Flagler County and was elected to be President where he

served faithfully for many years. He had a generosity of spirit and zest for life that was evident to all who came into contact with him.

Bob traveled the world and visited many countries, including Paris, Sweden, Italy, London and many countries in the Caribbean. He also enjoyed fishing and would get up early and go out alone to enjoy the solitude, serenity and connection to nature.

Bob was a humble, gracious man and a “Hello” from a passerby would frequently lead to a 30 minute conversation as he loved people and was always interested in a discussion of anything from the weather to politics.

Bob loved music and had an extensive and unique record collection that included Jazz and Big Band. He became friends with one of his favorite artists, Al Hibbler..

Bob is survived by his wife of 40 years, Madeline Cover-Williams; his son Anthony Williams and his longtime companion Brenda, both of Jacksonville Florida; his daughter Kim Williams-Jenkins and her Fiancé Christopher Whibley of Staten Island, New York. His three grandsons Kenyatta V Daniels of Jesup, Georgia and twins, Aeneas Roy Jenkins and Adam Robert Jenkins, his (namesake) of Staten Island, New York. Two granddaughters, Ayanna D. Daniels of Jesup, Georgia and Dr. Ashley J Campbell and her husband Brandon T. Campbell of Staten Island, NY; five great grandchildren; Lauquarnne, Sybil, “Little Kenny”, Khalil, and Aniyah Marie. Stepdaughter Dawn Cover of Rhode island and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
