Flagler County will offer the mold-ridden Sears building on Palm Coast Parkway, purchased by the county last year as a future Sheriff’s Office precinct location, back over to the previous owner and the real estate agent and inspection company involved in the deal in exchange for reimbursement of the county’s costs.

If those parties aren’t willing to take back the building and pay back the county for the purchase price and for the remediation and legal costs, the county will sue them and place the building on the market.

County commissioners voted unanimously to take those steps during a commission meeting on Nov. 18.

“It’s so clearly a preexisting condition. Clearly,” County Attorney Al Hadeed explained to commissioners. He added that the engineering firm the county had hired to inspect the building, Universal Engineering, had initially presented the county with a report that hadn’t evaluated the building for water intrusion.

The county had ordered the firm to check it again. Universal Engineering then presented a report that did not disclose the extensive water damage, which was due to a gutter problem and attempted

repair.

“We believe that those parties are more likely going want to resolve this in the least painful way,” Hadeed said. “Should they decline to do that ... our next step that we reach is that we file suit against those individuals, those companies, to recover the loss that we’ve sustained.”

“We believe absolutely that this was a known problem,” County Administrator Jerry Cameron said.

The county had purchased the Sears building in part because Flagler County Sheriff’s Office employees have been displaced from their Operations Center on State Road 100 in Bunnell since June 2018 due to mold problems in that structure.

But after the county bought the Sears building, county employees entered the building during a rainstorm and saw water pouring down an interior wall. Black mold covered the back side of the sheetrock. The damage was too extensive to remediate.

The real estate agent who handled the Sears building sale, Margaret Sheehan-Jones, had also handled the sale to the county of the building that became the Operations Center on SR 100.

After the county discovered the water intrusion problem last spring, Hadeed sent letters to the former owner, broker and inspection company branch manager, notifying them that the county intended to pursue claims.

Hadeed said: “The County does not know whether you knew of these conditions. If you did not, the County believes it was your duty under the circumstances to be aware of the suitability of the building for public governmental purposes. You sold the County the former hospital in Bunnell. The County constructed a new Sheriffs Operations Center on that site.

Dominating the news for at least two years are the media accounts and public hearings delving into the influence of water intrusion on the health of individuals who worked in the building. ... It is inconceivable to the County that this context would have escaped your attention.”

Commissioner Greg Hansen asked if the county can avoid dealing with the same engineering firm in the future. Commissioner Joe Mullins said he was uncomfortable with such a discussion while there is a possibility of a lawsuit.

The walls and furniture in Judge Andrea Totten’s chambers in the Kim C. Hammond Justice Center were still bare after her first day on the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court. Framed degrees and other personal affects sat in plastic containers, waiting to be hung. She had spent most of that first day in court, sitting in on criminal arraignment with Judge Melissa Distler, whose caseload is meant to be lessened by Totten’s appointment to the court, and on the county civil docket, which is to be hers, with retired Judge Pope Hamrick.

“I’m easing into it,” Totten said.

When she was not in court, she was making calls to IT, “trying to get the various computer programs figured out.”

As a child who moved first from Newfoundland to southern Ontario, and from there to Pennsylvania before her senior year of high school, she has learned to adjust to major changes. Going from the state Attorney General’s Office to a new judicial seat came with less culture shock, and it was a move to someplace she had always thought she may end up at.

“I honestly can’t remember when I didn’t want to go to law school,” Totten said. “I just remember from childhood, that always being my plan. There’s a satisfaction in serving victims.”

HOW TO LEARN, HOW TO FAIL

She thought at first she might be a lawyer. After earning a political science degree at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and attending law school at the University of Toledo, it just happened to be that her first real job was at a state attorney’s office.

“It taught me how to learn,” Totten said of her time in law school. “You still don’t know how to act as a lawyer” until you begin gaining practical experience.

After her time as an assistant state attorney in Sanford, Florida, it didn’t take long for Totten to reach Daytona Beach, where, after transitioning from assistant state attorney to judicial law clerk in 2011, Judge Belle Schumann first encouraged her to apply to the Attorney General’s Office.

Moving between criminal and civil law in the Florida judicial system taught Totten about the gulf between proof beyond a reasonable doubt and proof via a preponderance of the evidence, between criminal law’s emotional challenge (“Case details that kept me up at night”) and civil law’s intellectual challenge. But it also taught her, more importantly, about how to fail.

“I only know what I knew the week before,” she said. “There’s a knowledge and maturity that comes from making mistakes.”

THE LUXURY OF TIME

That knowledge and maturity saw Totten appointed to her current judicial seat by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“I’m sure it was a combination of factors” that made DeSantis confident in his choice of her to serve alongside Judge Distler, Totten said. She believes her many levels of experience are the key to her success. Totten admitted her relief to succeeding on her first application, an uncommon

JUDGE MELISSA DISTLER ON GETTING A SECOND JUDGE The addition of Andrea Totten as a second Flagler County judge will come just in time for a busy 2020, according to Melissa Distler, who has been one of the most overworked judges in the state since she was elected as the lone Flagler County judge in 2012.

Distler, who has had some help from senior judges on a part-time basis in the past couple of years, will need to take additional time to help guide Totten in the coming months. She expects that Totten will be able to carry an independent workload by spring time and then, “We’ll be a two-county-judge county,” Distler said.

That’s significant because Distler will have an extra 29 meetings scheduled in 2020 as a member of the Canvassing Board, which makes decisions on ballot-related issues during election years.

Totten is “very intelligent, very articulate,” Distler said.

“I know she’s going to do a great job.”

“I’m relieved to not have to run right away,” she said. Re-election will not be required until 2022.

Totten will not get her own robes until sometime in December. Until then, she has had to borrow them from other judges.

So it is with one’s judicial style, too, she said. She has learned punctuality, preparedness and etiquette from Distler; she has learned thoroughness of research from Judge Terence Perkins, for whom she once clerked. “But you can’t replicate just one person,” Totten said.

She has found that a judge has a greater luxury of time than a prosecutor, and that not being on the side of the prosecution is intellectually freeing, allowing one to pursue the facts of a case without the need to rigorously support one side of an argument.

“I believe in the system,” Totten said. “Judges need to stay neutral.”

FROM THE BENCH

The position’s greater luxury of time extends to her home life.

Totten has lived in Flagler County for the past 15 years but has commuted to a Daytona Beach workplace. Now her commute takes one minute, and her husband and two children are relieved.

“They’re proud and excited,” Totten said, even if her young daughter did not fully grasp Mom’s new job. “She thought I was on the Supreme Court. I think she thought that was the only court.”

Totten was grateful for her husband’s support during her years working against a prosecutor’s unpredictable schedule, and the help of her parents, who had moved to Palm Coast ahead of her.

“Family must come first,” she said. “It can be done!”

Totten advises law students who hope to follow in her footsteps to seek out internships as early as possible — even unpaid, the experience is worth it — and tells them there’s no better time, especially for female law professionals; things have improved since she entered the system.

Yet that sense of being treated differently as a woman, of being approached dismissively or aggressively by male defense attorneys during her time as a young prosecutor, has made her cognizant of the way societal stereotypes, from sex to race, can infect legal proceedings, and has given her perspective.

“I’m really humbled to have been entrusted with this position,” Totten said. “I take a lot of pride in serving the people of the state of Florida.”

County asks for state help on MedNex, housing, home rule Flagler County declares legislative priorities ahead of March session.

Flagler County’s top legislative priority for this coming year is supporting the establishment of a University of North Florida health care education facility in the city of Palm Coast, Flagler County commissioners decided during a commission meeting Nov. 18.

The county has eight legislative policy priorities and three legislative funding priorities that it will present to representatives for consideration during the legislative session.

Of the eight policy priorities, all except the UNF proposal are current legislative priorities that commissioners decided to keep on the list. At Commissioner David Sullivan’s urging, commissioners decided to move “supporting home rule” up from No. 8 to No. 6 on the priority list.

Of the three funding priorities, two — sewer collections on the northern barrier island, and flooding and environmental mitigation on the west side — are returning, while the third, a request for $3.7 million for the hardening and enhancement of the county’s Emergency Operations Center, is new this year.

Palm Coast is preparing to fine heavy commercial vehicle drivers who ignore the city’s “no trucks” signs on Florida Park Drive or take their trucks onto other residential city streets.

The City Council during a Nov. 19 council meeting voted 4-0 (Mayor Milissa Holland was absent) to approve the ordinance, which establishes certain roads as heavy truck routes and bans heavy trucks from deviating from them without an approved cause.

The city has two potential options for enforcement, City Attorney Bill Reischmann told board members: It could treat the violations like a code enforcement violation, or it could work with the Sheriff’s Office so that deputies would be able to ticket violators under the state law which requires obedience to “traffic control devices.”

“That will allow a sheriff’s deputy to enforce that provision of the Florida Statutes, as would be appropriate,” Reischmann said. “So there’s two different tools that would be available for the city and for the Sheriff’s Office to go out and try to achieve the objec-

Klufas to remain vice mayor Councilman Nick Klufas, who has served as vice mayor this past year, will continue in that role for another year. The position traditionally rotates between council members each year, and the vice mayor leads meetings when the mayor is absent.

Klufas has led numerous meetings because Mayor Miilssa Holland has frequently been absent attending to the health of her daughter, who recently had a liver transplant.

“Watching you taking over the reins over the last few months, I’m in agreement that we should have you prolong, if you don’t mind, have you prolong ... your job,” Councilman Eddie Branquinho said during he meeting, nominating Klufas for the position. Councilman Bob Cuff added, noting that the position traditionally changes hands each year, “I’ll give Mr. Klufas the chance to escape if he really wants to by invoking precedent, but I certainly have nothing to add ... if you’re willing to do it.”

The offense would be a Class III violation under the

city’s code of ordinances, and therefore subject to a fine of $200 if the city treats it as a code enforcement violation.

The approved heavy truck routes would be: Matanzas Woods Parkway, Palm Coast Parkway, Belle Terre Parkway, Palm Harbor Parkway, Pine Lakes Parkway, Royal Palms Parkways, Whiteview Parkway, Seminole Woods Boulevard, Old Kings Road, Citation Boulevard, Belle Terre Boulevard, U.S. 1, State Road 100 and Colbert Lane.

No prayers before board meetings School Board members feared the process could devolve into a ‘circus’ that would cost staff time.

Concerned that adding a regular invocation before its board meetings would lead to disruptions and to additional work for district staff, School Board members opted during a workshop Nov. 19 not to make invocations a feature of board meetings in the future.

School Board member Janet McDonald had raised the issue in August by inviting the pastor of the Flagler Beach United Methodist Church, Jeanine Clontz, to speak at the beginning of a board meeting.

In previous workshops, the board has been divided on the issue. Board member Colleen Conklin was open to the possibility, but expressed some reservations.

By a workshop Nov. 19, Conklin had decided against invocations.

“I’ve done a lot of research, I’ve watched a lot of meetings — school board meetings, county commission meetings — where they do a prayer before the meetings,” Conklin said. “And almost every single one of them eventually spirals down into a complete circus show. Literally, Google it and watch. … It turns into Satanist members hailing Satan to ‘Come down over this district.’ …

I’ve been struggling with this, because I have a very deep faith, but I also don’t want to put the district where we invite a circus into town, into our chambers.”

When government bodies allow for invocations, they generally must open up the process broadly to people who’d like to offer one; hence, the Satanist invocations.

Some government bodies have gotten around that issue by only inviting representatives of local religious organizations.

“I think that just leads to a whole lot of work for staff,” board member Trevor Tucker said.

“That could be a circus with a whole bunch of people coming to our meetings all about a topic that does not impact our students immediately.”

Board member Andy Dance said that if the purpose was to recognize the good works of local churches, as McDonald had said, that could be done during the board meetings’ existing “Spotlight” feature.

Conklin proposed compromises: board members could meet before the meetings actually begin and have an invocation then, she suggested.

Or they could have a student offer a “thought of the day” that would not be explicitly religious.

McDonald — who said it had only been her intention to highlight the way churches support students — acknowledged the other board members’ suggestions and urged them to bring their ideas to the board’s upcoming retreat in December.

Dear Editor: Are all Flagler County officials bereft of their senses?

I am astonished to read that they are still fumbling around with reports that would restore the defunct sheriff’s facility in Bunnell. We were conned in the purchase of the former hospital by some sharpies who unloaded their albatross and hung it around Flagler County’s neck.

Having “over bought,” our elected leadership then spent an over abundance of money to dress up the old carcass — only to find that it was dying inside its walls.

It is past time to admit we screwed up.

Get on with taking our losses, demolish the old defunct facility in Bunnell, and built a new facility elsewhere!

The current “choice” adjacent to the library is the poorest of possible locations. That will cram all law enforcement personnel (and its public) into the most congested area in the city of Palm Coast.

The new sheriff’s facility should be in so that its personnel and the public can have free, easy access to it.

Then, take the land in Bunnell and build a new fire station on it, replacing the old, antiquated one that stands across the street from the Water Department That would be a winner.

Veterans Day event was wrong venue for commissioner’s ‘TRUMP’ hat Dear Editor: Joe Mullins is a Flagler County commissioner and was present at the Veterans Day celebration, not as a private citizen in the crowd, but as a representative of that office, appearing in a prominent position with other dignitaries.

He was front and center, wearing a hat that read “TRUMP.” I am wondering if advertising for one presidential candidate represents the views of all of Flagler County?

As a military officer, I took an oath to defend the Constitution, which includes freedom of speech/expression, so his right to express his personal support of a candidate is something I take very seriously.

However, I don’t think Commissioner Mullins is appropriate in highlighting citizen Mullins’ political views, regardless of party affiliation.

City’s permitting department mired in inefficiency Dear Editor: The Palm Coast Permitting Department’s budget is over $2.3 million. Permits are issued without verification from the contractor that what

is stated is truthful.

The application, itself, is so faulty in design, barely leaving room for the adequate “description of the proposed work” (as required) and even a smaller space for the “estimated value.”

The department also allows a surrogate to file the application, not requiring any proof of the legality of the notary to do so. How can a department of $2.3 million in operational costs be so sloppy? When a permit is issued, is that where the responsibility ceases?

The city’s non-reaction to my particular issues as a taxpayer is tantamount to thumbing its nose at me and telling me that its regard for the contractor, be he honest or devious, takes precedence over the homeowner.

The city appears to be letting the bad guys get away with duplicity, and I, the homeowner, am left out to dry and cry.

A high school senior needs to validate his SAT scores on a college application; a wouldbe teacher must validate his credentials when applying for a job; a prospective enlistee in the military must validate his age and when a person dies, a death certificate must be filed at the court house to record the death on the tax rolls.

But, in our city, a contractor (or his surrogate) need only put down on the application for job value, “$2,200” instead of “$23,500,” and for job description, “existing beam repair” instead of “demolition and restoration of second story deck.”

One dead after crash on US 1

abuse case.

The 17-year-old victim told deputies that her father had punched her in the face twice and wrapped his hands around her neck.

The investigation revealed that the child’s stepmother had asked for the television remote and the child refused to give it to her, and the father, 36-yearold Andrew Bass, then punched his daughter, causing her to temporarily lose consciousness, and placed his hands around her neck and squeezed until she couldn’t breathe.

Deputies arrested him Nov. 15. He is charged with child abuse, domestic battery, and battery by strangulation.

“I am proud of these children for coming forward and reporting the abuse before it could get any worse,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in an FCSO news release.

“All children should know that they can approach a trusted teacher, school resource deputy, or call us for help. Parents have the right to discipline their children, but it must be done appropriately and without violence. I hope that this is a wakeup call for the parents to learn proper parenting and appropriate child discipline. I hope the families get the help they need from DCF.” The first case was reported Nov. 14 at Buddy Taylor Middle School after a 14-year-old student reported that his stepmother pulled him by the hair, punched him, grabbed him by the neck, and head-butted him on Nov. 13.

A school guidance counselor alerted the FCSO. The investigation revealed that the child’s stepmother, 38-year-old Teresa Berndt, had struck the child. Berndt was arrested and charged with child abuse.

Also on Nov. 14, deputies responded to Cherry Street in Bunnell for a separate child

Daytona Beach resident Sharlyn Johnson, 60, died on Thursday, Nov. 14, after a crash in southern Flagler County, at the intersection of Eagle Rock Road and U.S. 1, just north of Destination Daytona.

Johnson was driving a Dodge Neon west on Eagle Rock, and Christen Barney was driving a Ford Fusion north on U.S. 1, according to the crash report from the Florida Highway Patrol. Johnson “entered the intersection directly in the path of” Barney, the report states.

The collision caused Johnson’s Neon to spin several times and come to a rest partially in the median.

Barney, 22, of Bunnell, was taken to AdventHealth Palm Coast with minor injuries.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

FCSO responds to two separate child abuse calls The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to two separate child abuse reports on Nov. 14.

Sheriff, agriculture commissioner: Watch out for gas pump skimmers The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture have collaborated to warn residents of potential scams at the gas pumps this holiday season.

Gas pump skimmers are small electronic devices inserted into the card reader at gas pumps by crooks to copy credit or debit card information.

Once they get the information, the crooks can access your money.

People can protect themselves by paying inside the store with cash, or by paying with a credit card rather than a debit card if they pay at the pump, Sheriff Rick Staly said.

Credit cards have greater protections for consumers. People can also protect themselves by avoiding pump displays that look like they may have been tampered with, and by using pumps closer to the store.

In 2019, the Department of Agriculture removed almost 1,300 gas skimmers state-wide, and 30 were in Flagler County.

“The holidays can be a hectic time and that is exactly what these thieves are counting on,” Staly said. “The success of their scam depends on you being in a rush and not paying attention.

Don’t be an easy target! Taking a few extra seconds to be safe at the pump can save you a lot of money and a lot of hassle.”

FCSO recovers cocaine washed up on the beach The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous call at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, about a duffel bag washed up on the beach on Surfview Drive in the Hammock area.

The bag, covered in barnacles and seaweed, contained sand, shells and fifteen kilo-sized bricks of what appeared to be cocaine. One was open, and the white powder field-tested positive for cocaine.

“It is likely that these drugs have been in the ocean for a long time and they just happened to wash up on our beach from the rough surf and wind we have had the last few days,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in an FCSO news release. “I’m thankful that the person who located the bag did the right thing and called us. These are dangerous narcotics and could be deadly in the wrong hands.”

Deputies searched the beach.

No additional bags were located.

‘Looking right through us’ A Palm Coast Observer staff writer participated in Pastor Jearlyn Dennie’s ‘Homeless for a Day’ event.

I was homeless, and how quickly I regretted my choice of clothing: black shirt and deep navy jeans on an afternoon when our blessed Floridian cold front had fallen back under direct, unclouded sun. Only the flapping tarp that served as the roof of a cardboard shanty offered respite from the heat.

I was lucky, because this was only temporary. I was camped in front of Barbosa Plaza off Old Kings Road with Pastor Jearlyn Dennie and School Board member Andy Dance, taking part in Dennie’s “Homeless for a Day” event. This was to raise awareness of homelessness in general and to benefit two homeless

families in particular; they have enough to pay the bills for new, permanent housing, Dennie told me, but not enough to pay their security deposits. She wanted to raise $7,000 in cash and pledges.

Hearing about these families spoke to Dance.

“The first thought was about our students,” he said. “There’s about 360 children who attend our schools who are homeless.”

Dance had created a makeshift sleeping shelter aside from the larger cardboard hut, made from a single large cardboard box with a mat within.

I had only just tested this shelter when an officer arrived from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

“The property owner called about you being here,” he told us.

Rick Staly’s and property owner Maria Barbosa’s permission to be there, the officer left. Dennie told me that, before I arrived, a woman from the Florida Department of Health had driven by to talk to them about the dangers of hepatitis A, assuming they were homeless. A store owner had also stopped by to ask them to move to a different stretch of roadside.

“It might not be good for my business,” he had said.

Posing as a homeless man for a few hours was enough to make me wonder: What if I had to try to keep all my belongings dry in trash bags? Would I

have the ingenuity to make a shelter out of cardboard? What would I do if arrested for trespassing?

Dennie, once homeless for several weeks herself, had a sheaf of papers to hand out to curious passersby, those who did not, as Dance put it, “look right through us.” They contain a checklist of items to donate to Jearlyn Ministries, as well as facts about homelessness: There are over 600,000 homeless people in the U.S., more than 25% of whom are children.

There are five vacant houses for each one.

Knowing this chills me worse than any wind.

or Flagler Palm Coast swimmer Micayla Cronk, the butterflies build up in her stomach before every big race. But they disappear as soon as she steps on the block.

“That’s when I start to focus,” she said.

She pulls her goggles over her eyes and stares at the calm water, awaiting the signal to dive in.

Cronk had one goal in mind when she dove into the pool at Sailfish Aquatic Center for the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles in the Class 4A FHSAA State Swim Meet on Friday, Nov. 15: She was going for the state record in both events.

In the 200, an event she won for the first time last season, she touched the wall in 1 minute, 44.39 seconds. She missed out on the state record, set by Morgan Tankersley in 2016, by .08 seconds.

“It would have been a faster reaction time off the block, one more kick, one less breath,” Cronk said. “I was so close.”

Then came the 100, an event she won as a 14-year-old freshman in 2017 and again last year.

She touched the wall in 48.20 seconds, eclipsing Abbey Weitzel’s state record of 48.69, which was set in 2016.

Cronk, a 16-year-old junior, is now a five-time state champion

and arguably the most decorated athlete in FPC history.

“It’s awesome,” she said. “Not a lot of people get to say that. But I try to stay humble about it.”

Despite the victory, this past year has been a hectic one for Cronk. She left her previous club, the Daytona Beach Speed, and was in the process of looking for a new coach when she found the Blue Dolfins, coached by Charlie Rose, in Oviedo.

She trained harder and she trained smarter. She started working harder outside the pool as well as inside it.

Throughout the past year, it was not uncommon to see Cronk lifting weights alongside the Bulldogs’ football team.

“It’s helped me so much,” the University of Florida commit said. “My power in the water is so much better.”

Although the high school swim season is over, big meets are still to come for Cronk. She will compete in the U.S. Open and Jr. Nationals in December, and the U.S. Olympic Trials are in August 2020.

“It’s going to be hard,” she said.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how it all pans out, but I think I should do pretty well.”

But did Cronk, who started swimming at the age of 7, ever envision where she’s at now?

“Absolutely not,” she said with a laugh. “Every swimmer’s goal is to get to the Olympics, but I never thought I’d be where I am now.”

After two seasons at the helm, Don Mathews resigns as Pirates football coach CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Mathews — who was hired as the Pirates’ head coach on Dec. 12, 2017, after five seasons as the team’s defensive coordinator — announced his decision to resign from his position the morning of Friday, Nov. 15., effective immediately.

He cited his need to focus on family as his primary reason for the resignation.

His father died October 2018.

“Since then, I’ve been doing some soul searching,” Mathews said.

In addition, his mother, who lives in Tallahassee, struggles to take care of herself.

Mathews, who will remain at Matanzas the rest of the school year and continue to coach the boys weightlifting team, said he plans to look for a job in the Tallahassee area so he can be closer to family. He doesn’t know when, or if, he’ll return to coaching football.

“That’s not really a priority right now,” he said. “I just realized I need to get back to my family. I’ll worry about football later.”

Mathews was the Pirates’ defensive coordinator for five seasons before he was hired to replace the previous head coach Robert Ripley. Mathews guided the Pirates to back-to-back 3-7 seasons.

“I enjoyed every minute of it,” he said. “Minus playoff years, this is probably the best season that

we’ve had. We’ve had high-character kids all the way. We didn’t have to deal with any problems.

At the end of the day, the kids busted their butts every single week. They got better every single week. We competed in almost every game that we played. We had our opportunities to win” The decision to resign was a difficult one.

“I’ve made true friends and family here at Matanzas,” he said. “I wish them the best. I’ll be checking on them. Go Pirates.”

Matanzas Athletics Director Zach Rigney said the school will start searching for a new head coach as soon as possible.

In his third year at the helm of the program, Flagler Palm Coast boys soccer head coach Troy Stone may have his most experienced team yet.

The Bulldogs, who went 10-132 last season and lost 5-0 to Spruce Creek in the district semifinal, are bolstered by a roster that includes 14 seniors.

“You hope that these seniors will lift the younger guys up,” Stone said. “We’ll have some voices in the locker room and keep moving forward as a program.”

One of those seniors is Riley Clymer, who started playing soccer as a junior last year. His brother Myles Clymer is also on the team.

“It’s fun playing,” Riley Clymer said. “It’s like a brotherhood.”

However, the Bulldogs, who opened the 2019-20 season with a 6-1 loss to Mandarin the night of Wednesday, Nov. 13, at FPC High School, have struggled scoring the ball the past few seasons.

The goal is to steadily show improvement.

“We want to continue to build upon that,” said Stone, who also believes that the Bulldogs will be a solid defensive team this season.

“We want to create more chances.”

In each game, the Bulldogs want to give their all.

“We’re trying to make sure we play like it’s our last game,” said senior Luis Corazon, who scored FPC’s lone goal in the loss to the Mustangs. “We love this team. We have good chemistry. We’re playing with brothers instead of just teammates.”

Eyes on district title Pirates boys soccer prepares for 2019-20 season.

When Matanzas boys soccer coach Rich Weber envisions where he wants his team to be by the end of the season, one particular scenario comes to mind.

“I see us battling against Ponte Vedra like we always do for the district title,” he said. “And I think that’s realistic with the group we have.”

The 2019-20 Pirates are young.

They graduated a plethora of talent from last season, especially on the back end in former Pirates player Trent Stanley, who was the anchor of last year’s defense.

“He’ll be missed,” Weber said.

Stepping into the spotlight are Tristan Alvarez and David Vigo, among others. Alvarez is one of the team’s captains for the second season in a row, and Vigo — a junior who is a “very strong, very smart player, according to Weber — has started every single game since his freshman year.

Florida Elite’s U9 team celebrates winning the FIGO Super Cup.

About 40 kids from the Palm Coast area tried out for Florida Elite Academy’s 9-and-under team. Nine kids made the squad.

After the season, the group was undefeated and made the finals of the FIGO Super Cup Florida this October in Lakewood Ranch.

They had beaten two teams from Miami and one team from Tampa to earn the right to compete against Paris Saint-Germain Academy’s 9-and-under squad.

PSG, a professional club that plays in the highest-tier of French soccer, has an academy in Miami.

They also are free to choose who is on their teams from a talent pool of thousands of kids.

Florida Elite won 4-1.

“It says a lot about the kind of players we have here,” said head coach Rodney Perry, who has coached youth soccer for 10 years following seven years as a professional soccer player. “This is my passion, and hopefully a little bit of that comes off in my coaching them. They push themselves. For them to go to these bigger tournaments and do what they’re doing is phenomenal.”

This was the second full season this team was together. The boys, many of whom had either

never played competitive soccer or hadn’t played at all, struggled competing in an older age group.

They won five games, lost four and tied one in 2018.

“We took a few lumps, but we learned about the game,” Perry said. “Now it’s about fine tuning it. They’re kicking butt now.”

As champions, the team is invited to compete in Spain against teams from Europe and Africa next summer.

“I’m just excited for the kids,” said Keith Lagocki, whose son Tanner plays for the team. “It was a big deal for them. To see them do so well made me feel really good about where they are.”

Freedom Fest inspires Flagler County

emperatures dropped on Saturday, but Palm Coast was flying high.

Once again, Freedom Fest brought the community together for a day of live music and airplanes to celebrate America.

The free event included over 30 warbirds on runways, where all ages came to get a closer look.

Edward James Monaghan 1946-2019 Edward James Monaghan, 72, of Palm Coast, Florida, passed away on November 9, 2019.

What was once the Dog Pound is now a picturesque spot for food and spirits known as the Porch.

The Dog Pound’s pivot from rough-hewn saloon to freshpainted quaintness was the result of an in-family transition of ownership: Liz Gallagher took over the location from her stepfather, Glenn Iannillo, who is retiring.

The bar at 1405 E. Moody Blvd. had been the Dog Pound for 20 years. Gallagher says her stepfather had it for the latter half of that time. Iannillo had also once owned a bar in Flagler Beach called Mothers, and still owns Smiles Night Club in Palm Coast.

“He loved the change,” Gallagher said. “It needed some TLC and young blood to bring it back to life.”

The 25-year-old Gallagher has had almost a decade of hospitality experience, from working at Cracker Barrel as a hostess at age 16 to the six years she spent as a manager at High Jackers Restaurant prior to taking over from Iannillo.

She credited her stepfather,

boyfriend and mother with “huge parts” of the bar’s transformation, which she said was not actually as drastic as it seems.

“The building has so much character,” Gallagher said. “It has to be close to 100 years old.

I wanted to really accentuate the rustic charm that already did exist. We kept the original hardwood floors, cypress wood paneling on the walls and the coquina fireplace. It is beautifully made and just needed a makeover.”

This makeover into a charming venue at which Gallagher has hosted her own baby shower seems to have been welcomed by the community; according to her, the Porch has been much busier since the change, even though their new food license most likely won’t come through until January 2020.

“We’ve had an awesome turnout since we opened in July,” she said. “Many previous customers are very impressed with the change. We are so grateful for those who have come back since our renovations, but we are excited to be expanding into a new clientele.”

Charlotte Gaul Davis passed away peacefully on November 1, 2019 in Venice Fl. Born on December 14, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pa where she lived until 1972 when her husband Roger (deceased 2006) was transferred to Jacksonville, Fl. They later retired to Ormond Beach and Palm Coast.

She relocated to Venice when her health issues became necessary to be closer to family. She is survived by her two sons, Ronald (Dianne) in Ohio and Glenn (Debbie) in Florida. Known as “Grammy” to her Grandchildren Brian, Kristen (Ben) Quinn, and Colleen; then at the age of 90 she became known as “GG” to her great grandchildren, Avery and Waylon Quinn.

She leaves so many memories in the hearts of her family and those who knew her. She was blessed with a long and productive life full of laughter and good times.

SERVICE: A private family service will be held at a later date with interment at the Trinity Presbyterian Church of Palm Coast.

Hugo is survived by his daughter Brandi (Danny) Givens of Palmetto Bay, FL and his beloved granddaughters Kaitlyn, Kelly, & Camryn.

Hugo was born August 26, 1945, to Clarence and Estel (Halstead) Hammond in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Arkansas and graduated from Gravette High School in 1963. While in High School he excelled in Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Football and Track. During his High School Football career, Hugo made All District/All Conference as a Running Back. As a Senior, he earned Honorable Mention for All-State as well as being selected to play in the Arkansas High School All Star Football game. He continued his education at the University of Arkansas graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Hugo also earned a Master’s and Specialist’s Degree from Emporia State University and Nova University, respectively.

In 1968, Hugo began his lifetime career in education as a Physical Education Teacher at Cotter High School in Cotter, Arkansas. The following year he became Head Football Coach at California High School in California, Missouri. He later went on to teach and coach football at Jefferson City High School in Jefferson City, Missouri. In 1974, a newlywed Hugo moved to Miami, Florida to begin his career at Southwest Miami High School.

Ed was born in Monroe, Michigan to Mary Lane on November 21, 1946. He graduated from Summerfield High School in Petersburg, Michigan. He married Kathryn on April 30, 1977 in Deerfield, Michigan. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the Air Force as an Airborne Weaponry Instructor. He was a member of the Palm Coast Scramblers Golf Club and enjoyed working at Hammock Dunes Golf Club with the guys in the cart barn and driving for Gibbs Chevrolet.

Ed is survived by his loving wife Kathy, son Scott Monaghan (Tuesdee), granddaughter Sierra Monaghan, sister Darlene Schadewald of Lexington, South Carolina and brother John Monaghan (Joan) of Tecumseh, Michigan, and nephews Robby and BJ Schadewald.

Ed never liked to be fussed over and per his wishes there will be no services. Memorials may be given to organizations that support families of wounded warriors and fallen heroes.

The family would like to specially thank the staff at Hammock Dunes for flying the flag at half-staff in Ed’s honor.

t was Indian Trails Middle School’s turn to host a tour on Monday, Nov. 18, of its flagships for business and computer science, robotics, outdoor science, agriculture, and marine science.

The Flagler County Education Foundation program Classroom to Careers has its students preparing for the future today.

CITY COUNCIL: ‘BE LOCAL, BUY LOCAL’ The Palm Coast City Council recognized the city’s “Be Local, Buy Local” campaign and America Recycles Day via proclamations at the Nov. 5 business meeting.

“Be Local, Buy Local” promotes local businesses and the contributions they make to the community’s economy. Our community receives a portion of three different sales taxes collected when goods and services are purchased locally; last year, the amount of sales tax returned to the city amounted to $8.1 million. This money helps pay for projects such as the Community Center and Holland Park, as well as street improvements and sidewalks.

The council proclaimed Nov. 15 to be America Recycles Day. At the meeting, a box was presented that is used to recycle tennis balls.

In just a few months, the city has recycled 2,800 tennis balls that are used to make tennis court surfaces and footings for equestrian arenas.

TOMOKA EYE DONATES TO CLINIC

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Curtis J. Schalit is now a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, making him the only oral-maxillofacial surgery fellow in Volusia and Flagler. “I am incredibly honored to receive this prestigious accreditation and to be recognized for the work being done to improve surgical standards here in Volusia and Flagler Counties,” said Schalit. “As the only fellow in the area, I am dedicated to continuing to making patient care the number one priority.”

Dr. Schalit is part of the team at Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates, with offices in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach and Palm Coast.

The Tomoka Eye Foundation has donated ocular exam equipment valued at over $5,000 to the Jesus Clinic in Daytona Beach. The clinic received a slit lamp, phoropter and exam chair from the foundation.

“The doctors were using eye exam equipment from 1973, so we were very much in need of an update,” said Jesus Clinic Medical Director Dr. Bill Gilmer. “Tomoka Eye Foundation has been an incredible partner for us over the years and we are so grateful for their time, talent and generosity.”

Dr. Joseph France, the founder of Tomoka Eye Associates, with offices in Ormond, Palm Coast and Port Orange, volunteered for over a decade at the clinic and paved the way for a majority of the young eye doctors over the past 14 years to volunteer.

Waste Pro has promoted Heather Badger-Felmet to division manager of its location in Palm Coast.

Badger-Felmet, a graduate of Daytona State College, has been in the waste industry for a decade, joining Waste Pro in 2009 in the accounts receivable department.

From there, she worked her way up to her most recent position as Office Administrator in Palm Coast.

“Heather has been quietly developing her leadership skills over the years with her willingness to learn and her ambition to provide excellent customer service,” said Northeast Florida Regional Vice President Brian Wintjen. “With that, she has gained competence and confidence and is ready for her next role with Waste Pro.” In her new role, Badger-Felmet will be responsible for supervising dozens of employees who service more than 40,000 residential customers and more than 1,500 commercial customers in Palm Coast and Flagler County. In addition to her role at Waste Pro, Badger-Felmet has been a long-time volunteer for Palm Coast, serving as a youth soccer coach for the past 13 years.

Richard Rigby and Kobe Narvaez readily admit neither were thrilled with their assignment of “Women in Politics: 1960s to the Present” until they discovered Patsy Mink and Shirley Chisholm.

Mink was a third-generation Japanese-American and the first woman of color elected to Congress. Chisholm became the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress. She later retired to Palm Coast.

Like most ads directed at housewives, the message depicted a housewife dressed in full June Cleaver style, kneeling before her husband and serving him coffee,as he reclines from a taxing day at work. Both Smith and Ludwig found it hard to understand how women could so easily return to domestic chores after they had worked in male-dominated factories for war efforts.

The event was capped off with a showing of the HBO film “Iron Jawed Angels,” one of a series of events planned to draw attention to the Women’s Suffrage movement and its upcoming centennial celebration. AAUW Flagler member Kathy Reichard-Ellavsky said the movie is powerful and should be required viewing for all college students.

MELDRIM COTTAGE NOW AT AG MUSEUM The Florida Agricultural Museum has announced that the Meldrim Cottage in St. Augustine has joined the growing village on the museum’s property on U.S. 1 and Old Kings Road in Palm Coast.

It was moved Nov. 12 and joined several other buildings that have been moved to the museum from areas across the state.

The Meldrim Cottage is a 960-square-foot one-story woodframe house with two covered porches, a parlor, kitchen and three bedrooms. The house was built by James S. Meldrim in the 1950s. The Meldrim family

operated a turpentine and timber farm in St. John’s County dating back to 1934.

St. Augustine recently purchased the property to build a new park and make flooding improvements. The city asked for proposals from any interested parties, offering the house at no charge and adding $5,000 to help with the cost of the move.

After reviewing the proposals, the St. Augustine city commissioners voted unanimously to award the home to the Florida Agricultural Museum.

The cottage will be renovated, repaired and dressed in its original style of the early 1950s. Call 446-7630 for more information.
