The site is on land that is already zoned general commercial. The uses would be consistent with that zoning designation, which allows for medical offices, hospitals, retail, restaurants and insti-

tutional uses, Palm Coast Senior Planner Jose Papa said.

Papa said the proposed development would provide services in areas that are not currently served by its proposed use, and that those uses are consistent with surrounding properties.

A vacant plot of land on the western side of U.S. 1 at Palm Coast Parkway may become a medical/ educational campus, although the identities of the businesses or facilities that would locate on the 88.6-acre site remain undisclosed.

The city of Palm Coast Planning and Land Development Regulation Board voted 7-0 at a Nov. 4 meeting to approve a master planned development agreement for the site.

Attorney Michael Chiumento, representing the applicant, said he could not yet discuss the identity of the site’s potential users because of contract issues.

“We are hopeful that we will be able to place there entities — multiple entities — that would create a campus-style setting that would be both educational and medical,” Chiumento told planning board members. “And hopefully, as that grows, there would be ancillary service businesses to support those jobs.”

How many jobs the proposal would create, he said, isn’t yet clear.

earing his Vans s h o e s, s k i n ny gray pants and a polo shirt, Bobby Bossardet might be mistaken for a student at Buddy Taylor Middle School if it weren’t for the walkie talkie on his hip — and his full, neatly trimmed beard.

Bossardet, who was hired in 2018 as the fifth principal in seven years at Buddy Taylor, strides the halls, talking to every student he sees. Smiling, waving, fist bumping.

“Hey, girl!” he says in his raspy voice to one student. “How are your grades? You getting A’s?”

She thinks for a moment and says, “B’s and C’s.”

He cocks his head to one side.

“You getting A’s?” he says again, both serious and not serious.

Bossardet isn’t the only adult putting out this friendly-mentor vibe: All adults — from janitors to teachers to administration — are expected to be in the hallways during transitions between classes. It shows the students that adults care about them; it’s also harder to start a fight when a teacher is chatting you up.

Now, he said, data suggests Buddy Taylor is poised to leap from being a weak-link C school to an A, matching the best schools in the district.

Discipline has improved, with 81% of Buddy Taylor students receiving zero referrals in 20192020 (up from 70% in 20182019). The number of referrals went down 38% in that same time frame, and out of school suspension days went down 48%. Attendance was up to 94.6% before the pandemic.

Bossardet’s work has been rewarded: He was recently hired at the district level and is now Flagler Schools’ executive director of

leadership development. His first day was Nov. 9. His former assistant, Cara Cronk, was hired as the new principal of Buddy Taylor.

ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS

It took some time before Bossardet realized that leadership in schools was all about relationships with students.

He attended Flagler Palm Coast High School, and his wrestling coach at the time, Steve DeAugustino, remembers him as being almost obsessed with winning a title.

“He was a great person to coach,” said DeAugustino, now the athletics director at FPC. “He would do not only everything you asked him, but I remember days when he would show up and go out to a field and flip tires, by himself, chop wood to build his strength.”

Bossardet did win an individual state championship as a senior. (“I finished second my junior year, but I don’t like talking about it,” he said.)

After FPC, Bossardet wrestled at Carson-Newman University, in Tennessee, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in human exceptionalities in 2003.

He earned his master’s degree in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University in 2007.

He returned to Flagler Schools when he was hired to teach kids with behavioral struggles; he also became an assistant coach to DeAugustino. When he eventually took over as head coach of the wrestling team, he pushed the players hard. He expected state championships.

Bossardet recalled that after a trip out of state with one of his early teams, some players quit.

It was a wakeup call to him that something needed to change.

“He learned pretty quick that not everybody was as motivated as he was,” DeAugustino said.

He spoke to another coach at FPC, Dave Halliday, a legend in track and field in Florida, and told him how much he admired Halliday’s hall-of-fame career.

Halliday replied that although the honors were nice, the greatest honor was that 15 of his former athletes had asked him to be in their wedding parties. The state championships didn’t matter at all compared with the role he’d had in students’ lives.

Bossardet began to think of other ways to measure success.

“I started focusing on individuals, instead of having the same expectations for everyone,” he said. “I realized being a wrestling coach wasn’t about wins. It was about talking to the kid who was going through a divorce or a breakup.”

But coaching remained part of his identity as a leader.

SETTING HIGH EXPECTATIONS

Showing students that he cared about them as people was one important lesson. Another was to help them believe that they could achieve great things.

Several years ago Bossardet helped set up a service-learning program for FPC students, modeled after the Princess Place Legacy program created by one of his many mentors, Francis Royals. Bossardet’s students set up tours for elementary school kids, teaching them science at the beach in an eco tour.

The first tour was for Kenneth DeFord’s class at Bunnell Elementary School. Afterward, Bossardet recalled, DeFord thanked the high school tour guides. “I want to let you know the impact you made on their lives today,” he said. “We had four kids who attended that had never seen the beach until today.”

“That was powerful for my students to hear,” Bossardet recalled.

“I’ll never forget him making that speech.”

INNOVATIVE PRINCIPAL AWARD In October, Bobby Bossardet was given an Innovative Principal Award by the Florida Association of School Administrators. The group recognized him for implementing Buddy Bucks, which are given to students for positive behavior and can be spent at the studentrun store, The Nest.

In an attempt to bring community resources to Buddy Taylor families, Bossardet and the school’s teachers and staff also threw block parties and distribute yard signs to recognize students for “Rising to Greatness.”

After the block parties were over, Bossardet said, he would drive through the low-income neighborhoods and notice dozens of the yard signs that families had already planted in their yards. That showed that the signs meant something to each of those families, he said.

Later, as a dean at FPC, Bossardet saw more of the power of positivity. He and the other deans at the time, Ryan Andrews (now an assistant principal at Indian Trails Middle School) and Tousiant Roberson (now an AP at FPC), dealt with disciplinary issues every day, and then one day Bossardet decided to call home about a student — just because.

The parent answered the phone with a groan, as in, “What did she do now?” But Bossardet reassured the parent, saying that on the contrary, the student was doing great. He encouraged the parent to do something nice for the student that weekend, to celebrate.

Making the call felt good. It was like they had invented a new approach to discipline.

Bossardet, Andrews and Roberson got excited about the results,

“That’s step one for changing that neigthrbohod,” he said.

“It’s recognizing the success stories and not just seeing the negative. We do it for those kids.”

As the pandemic forced changes to education, Bossardet and the Buddy Taylor team also drove to 250 students’ homes in three weeks to check on them, led by Behavior Interventionist David Vigo and Attendance Clerk Dawn Stuart.

“He has rallied his team of teachers and staff to provide a quality education whether that student is in a classroom on campus or on a computer screen from their home,” Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt said in the FASA story.

“It has not been an easy move for anyone, but the leadership Mr. Bossardet is providing has eased this transition.”

“Positive phone calls take 20 seconds,” he said. But they changed how some students thought about themselves for a long time afterward.

CONNECTIONS IN ACTION

When Bossardet was hired as principal at Buddy Taylor Middle School, he tried to use the best of his experiences as a coach, a teacher, a dean. He wanted to make Buddy Taylor a positive brand. Cuff, who represents District 1, did not run for re-election, and his seat will be taken by councilman-elect Ed Danko.

Netts has been serving a temporary appointment to fill out the term of former District 2 Councilman Jack Howell, who stepped down in July for health reasons. The District 2 seat will be filled by Victor Barbosa.

Mayor Milissa Holland addressed Cuff first.

“His efforts helped to attract news businesses to Palm Coast, to update public services and to maintain and preserve our city’s beauty,” Holland said. “He championed the exploration of opportunities to use existing facilities and new technologies to provide advanced services to our residents, and he has done so humbly, always as a calm voice of reason.”

Of Netts — who’d been elected to two terms as a councilman and another two as mayor — Holland said he could be considered the “ultimate patriarch of our community.”

“With Mayor Netts at the helm, Palm Coast pioneered many successful programs, including his platforms for environmental sustainability, water management, energy efficiency and water reuse.”

Holland said. “He also led a strong fiscally responsible plan to diversify and grow our

economy during a recordbreaking economic downturn.”

Cuff and Netts thanked their colleagues.

“I do want to thank the council ... and also the past council members, because your collegiality and your civility — and the ability to disagree without being disagreeable — is, I think, one of the things that has made doing a difficult job a lot easier and a lot more pleasant,” Cuff said.

“This council has done a marvelous job under very, very trying circumstances — Zoom meetings are not a lot of fun, on either side of the table,” Netts said. “But it’s been a pleasure to come back and serve for a period of time. ... If there’s any way I can serve the city, I’ll be happy to do so.”

It was supposed to be a mixed-use development, and I’d like to get a better understanding of when we’re going to see commercial.”

Palm Coast to amend agreement with school district Palm Coast is planning to amend an agreement with the Flagler County School District that lays out how the city works with the district to coordinate on growth, impact fees and school facility requirements to prevent development from outstripping school capacity.

The city approved the agreement in June 2008 along with the district, the Flagler County government and Bunnell city government.

At the time, Flagler Beach, Beverly Beach and Marineland were not included because they met exemption requirements.

Flagler Beach no longer does, and is now a signator, necessitating an update, Palm Coast Senior Planner Jose Papa said.

The language of the agreement is also being updated, he added, to more clearly explain how impact fees are calculated for developments. The actual nature of the calculation process is not being changed.

“My concern, always, is making sure we have adequate capacity for students in Flagler County,” Palm Coast Mayor Milissa Holland said.

“Certainly when there are large developments, what impact that has on the school district is important to me as well.”

TOO HONEST FOR HER OWN GOOD 2:38 a.m. State Road 100 at Seminole Woods.

Drug possession. A deputy on patrol saw a car fail to stop behind the stop bar at an intersection at a gas station. Another deputy told him he’d seen the same car leave from a known drug house.

Deputes stopped the car, which smelled of pot and was driven by a woman. Another woman was in the passenger

seat. Deputies patted down the driver, who was OK’d, but the passenger had several odd bulges in her clothes.

Deputies asked her to remove the items she was trying to conceal, and she pulled out two glasses cases stuffed with drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Then, according a deputy’s report, the woman “spontaneously uttered that she uses these items to introduce narcotics into her body.”

Deputies arrested her and took her to the jail, where they found more drugs as they booked her.

WET POWDER 6:28 p.m. First block of Forest Road.

Preventing the use of a fire extinguisher. A condominium’s maintenance man arrived at the condo and found that someone had broken into the condo pool’s maintenance room and emptied a fire extinguisher into the pool. Pool poles, life savers and buoys lay strewn around the maintenance room.

An employee tried to check the surveillance camera feed, but someone had disabled it.

The employee was ultimately able to get it up and running: It showed an 18-year-old man, along with another man and several women, partying, drinking booze and engaging in sexual behavior in the pool area.

Deputies found the 18-yearold, who admitted that he’d broken into the pool maintenance area. He said he’d tried to delete the security footage — and, when he couldn’t, sprayed the whole area with the fire extinguisher. Deputies arrested him.

Narcotics, driving with a suspended license. A deputy on patrol checked a pickup truck’s tag and discovered that the truck’s sole registered owner had a suspended driver’s license. The deputy stopped the pickup.

The driver told the deputy that he didn’t have a license.

The deputy told two passengers in the truck that they were free to go, but one of the passengers grabbed a cloth pouch in the car, told the deputy that he wanted to “show you what’s in this,” and opened it to reveal several cut straws with a powdery substance and a torch lighter.

The deputy asked him what the powder was, and the man used the slang term for oxycodone. The deputy then checked a soda cup held by the truck’s driver, and found that it contained pills and a syringe.

The men were arrested.

Gardens developer must follow the rules

our recent publication of an open letter from the Flagler Home Builders Association and the Chamber of Commerce supporting the Gardens Development, leaves out many details and plays down the size of the opposition to this development.

The developer, whom these writers extol as being so respected, is the same developer who originally ignored the previously approved PUD from 2005 and planned to dump 9,000 residents, high-rise condominiums and large commercial spaces, on a small piece of environmentally sensitive property. His multiple companies then sued a citizen who spoke out. These are tactics that do not earn developers “distinguished and impeccable” names.

The business community I have worked in for the past 40 years would not support such a development if they knew the facts and the devastation on our environment. Our beautiful environment is what sells real estate and encourages companies to relocate here. Some of those people — who came here for that unspoiled and uncongested lifestyle — bemoan that loss. That was said to me this past week at the hospital when a nurse said he had moved from south Florida to get away from the developments that are now happening here.

DENSITY AND ‘GRAY WATER’

Some points to consider: The number of homes planned by the developer on the current site plan is only the beginning and has “future development” reserved sites. This will not be

allowed if the county enforces the original PUD densities.

The plan is to dump all of the density on the east side of John Anderson Highway (over, in and around wetlands).

The original PUD that the developer claims they are following without need of a revision has multiple requirements as to golf course, sewer-gray water and traffic. In each of these items listed the developer is not in compliance with the approved PUD. The PUD approved in the 2005-2006 era, is now 15 years old. Many things have changed during those 15 years in land use regulations. Most particularly is building in a sensitive area and further degrading conditions for neighboring property owners.

The fill dirt alone for just elevating roads within the east side development will require some individual lot owners/builders to add 4-6 feet of fill to build above the road grade. No existing vegetation or tree will survive that amount of fill. One only has to ride to Seaside Landings on John Anderson to see exactly that happening on their near Intracoastal Waterway lots.

The Palm Drive homes, which back up to the same wetland the Gardens will build around, flooded after Hurricane Irma, and many are just a few feet away from the Gardens lands that will be filled way above the Palm Drive homes. The developer’s engineer says he has a plan.

Should they be required to post a bond as a guarantee that their added fill will not flood neighboring properties?

Traffic is another concern.

The original developer, Ginn, planned for all traffic to be kept within the development and have it exit out onto State Road 100, opposite Colbert Lane. This developer has no plans to do anything but dump hundreds of additional daily trips onto John Anderson.

As concerned residents, all we ask is to follow the rules established 15 years ago, and one would hope the county could improve on any land uses that relate to our changing environment.

ENHANCE, DON’T DESTROY

The chamber and FHBA seem to feel that our organization is a small group of residents that object to any development. They have been so misinformed of the size of our organization and allied groups that see and recognize a “bad” development when they see one. Don’t be misled by such assumptions of our size and commitment. They assert their quality of life and jobs are threatened by a concerned citizenry, but have not shown any initiative to show up. Perhaps an appearance of their group might properly inform them of the points we make.

The construction industry I know and work in is so stressed currently due to the high demand, lack of skilled tradesmen and material delays. This is not an industry that is dying or losing jobs due to a lack of buildable land.

Additionally, these organizations seem to think there is a lack of buildable lots in Flagler County. A study I completed last year shows quite the opposite.

At that time there were in the vicinity of 20,500 residential lots plus thousands of square feet of commercial space of vested DRIs and PUDs. There were many more lots in smaller subdivisions being phased in. A total at that point in time was approximately 37,900 units plus commercial providing years and years of

developable land located in appropriate areas of the county.

I am writing from the perspective of being a Realtor and home builder. I have been involved in the business community all of that time and served as the president of the Flagler County Chamber and the Flagler Home Builders Association. I also served as the state president of the Florida Home Builders Association and sat with 15 other representatives on the National Association of Home Builders regional directors — representing Florida and Puerto Rico. I served on and chaired the Flagler County Planning Board for many years and served eight years as a Flagler County commissioner, District 3. With my background, I take offense being called a NIMBY, when I am merely seeking quality development by developers who keep their word.

With my background and as a 65-year resident of Flagler, I appreciate growth that enhances, rather than destroys the natural attributes of our county and how it sizes up to our region, state and nation in a quality community and desired place to live. This development, as presented, will further degrade a desirable community that many moved here for.

The County Commission should demand the developer follow the rules.

Some Hammock voters received the wrong ballots

Four men arrested for exposure at Graham Swamp

Some Hammock-area voters filled out the wrong ballots on Election Day after poll workers incorrectly handed them ballots that included Dunes Community Development District races even though the voters weren’t part of the Dunes CDD. The mix-up included a small number of ballots relative to the total cast in those races, Supervisor of Elections Kaiti Lenhart said.

“Even thought there were some ballots that were distributed improperly, it would not have changed the results,” she said.

The error occurred only during on-site voting on Election Day, and involved two races — the Dunes CDD Seat 2 and Seat 4 races.

In the case of Seat 2, the error involved 142 ballots, while for Seat 4, 85 ballots were involved. In both cases, the number of affected ballots was smaller than the number of votes by which the race had been won.

Deputies have arrested four men after an investigation into reports that men were meeting up at Graham Swamp for sex.

The following defendants were arrested on Nov. 3, charged with exposure of sexual organs, and trespassed from the county park: Harold White, 61; Thomas Ambrose Deakins, 74; John Gauci Jr., 56; and John Wesley Troxler, 72.

A man who’d claimed that his car was stolen had in fact sunk it in a canal to file a fraudulent insurance claim, according to an investigation by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The alleged victim, Shawn Barnes, 28, told deputies his 2015 Fiat 500 had been stolen from his driveway overnight, but a witness said Barnes had launched the car into a canal to make a false insurance claim.

On Oct. 21, the FCSO and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office dive teams found the car in a Putnam County canal. Barnes was arrested Nov. 3.

Tax Collector draws non-resident customers Flagler County has received approximately $400,000 in excess of its revenue projections from the Tax Collector’s Office this year as the office attracts out-of-county customers whose own tax collection offices have been limited or closed due to COVID-19, County Administrator Jerry Cameron said during a Nov. 2 County Commission meeting.

L ETT ERS Defending Flagler Beach and Bulow Creek Dear Editors: I am compelled to respond to the published letter of the Flagler Home Builders Association and Palm Coast-Flagler Regional Chamber in support of The Gardens and their blatant denigration of Preserve Flagler Beach Bulow Creek.

PFBBC is definitely not a NIMBY (Not in My Back Yard) organization and certainly not opposed to development. We welcome development that is sane, sensible and sustainable.

We do not disseminate untruths and misinformation; to the contrary, we have broadcast and highlighted the issues and obstacles inherent in this development. We did not create them.

In July 2019, this “distinguished and well-established developer” presented their plan for The Gardens at the Hilton Garden Inn. This was a resurrected and revised or “modified” 2005 Planned Unit Development (PUD) that now called for 3,996 residential units and approximately 500,000 square feet of commercial development. This was all to be built in an area that is environmentally sensitive, historically significant, and a FEMA designated flood zone.

The developer has since scaled back to the original 453 units negotiated in 2005/2006, more sane and sensible, but is it sustainable? John Anderson Highway is not a highway. It is a two-lane, bucolic country road that is part of The Scenic Loop.

It has only two ingress/egress points, State Road 100 or Moody Boulevard to the north and Walter Boardman to the south.

There are no east/west roads that exit along the entire length of John Anderson Highway.

John Anderson is also a Flagler County evacuation route. How will any evacuation be safely accomplished?

PFBBC has effectively been requesting that the developer either apply for a new PUD or adhere to the “spirit” of the original 2005 PUD and add the improvements that 15 years of historical weather/flooding data has necessitated.

There is a great deal of existing and/or planned development in this area already: Old Kings Road Project, Town Center, and this “distinguished and well-established” developer’s own Marina del Palma to name just a few.

These letter writers would have the focus be on economic development and jobs, which are very important, but not at the expense of health, safety and community.

The impact to already deficient roads and to schools that are at or above capacity have not been addressed properly. Do we want to become another overdeveloped region like South Florida? Do we want to destroy our waterways, air quality, wildlife and history?

Their letter states: “We should care deeply about protecting all local jobs and helping industries thrive with a healthy and strategic approach to growth and development.” That is exactly

what PFBBC is seeking from the developer of The Gardens and what this “miniscule percentage of the population” assures the commissioners is our goal.

We are asking that the developer be compelled to “follow the rules,” the rules stated in the original PUD, the revised county Land Development Code, the FEMA revised flood plain, conservation measures all put into place since 2005/2006. Just follow the rules!

Time to give up on current A1A Dear Editor: In the overall scheme of things, what it really comes down to is that we have allowed developers/land owners to build too close to the ocean. It happens in every state with an ocean shoreline.

In Flagler’s case, State Road A1A should be moved back a block or two and all homes in the way either declared eminent domain or pay the properties’

owners a fair price. Despite the millions to be spent, at taxpayers’ expense, it will not be enough over the long run.

The area needed to produce dunes and an effective sea wall is just not there between water’s edge and A1A. As for beachfront homeowners, it seems to me they should be the ones to figure out how they are going to fix the problem, not the rest of us. For those asking for money so their properties can be fixed — it’s ludicrous. I see eminent domain as the way to go to fix the problem once and for all.

COVID-19 spurs early retirements among teachers The district is also awaiting state guidance on how the spring semester will proceed.

Flagler Schools lost 21 teachers between March 1 and Oct. 1 this year due to retirement — up from just nine during the same time frame in 2019.

The increase reflects teachers’ wariness of teaching in-person classes during the pandemic.

Celine Bradley was one of the district’s retirees.

“I was hoping to finish the year out: That was my original goal,” she said.

Bradley had been scheduled to teach fourth grade at Wadsworth Elementary this year, but didn’t want to teach face-to-face because she falls into the high risk category for COVID-19.

The district offered teachers a remote-instruction option in

which they’d be teaching students via webcam, but even in that case, the teachers are required to be on campus and participate in things like cafeteria duty and recess duty, so that didn’t seem like an ideal option either.

Bradley was, at least initially, placed in a third option: teaching via iFlagler, the district’s virtual learning platform.

That still required teachers to teach from a district building, but with fewer ancillary face-to-face tasks.

The district’s iFlagler enrollment boomed from 39 full-time iFlagler students last year to 1,458 as of early September this year.

But by October, the number had dropped down to 1,154, and the district began reassigning teachers like Bradley.

“They called me up one afternoon and said that they had a drop in iFlagler enrollment … and I was chosen from Wadsworth to be face-to-face,” Bradley said.

“And I just could not do that.”

That was on Sept. 23. Bradley was already in the state’s Deferred Retirement Option Program, or DROP, but had planned to work at least another year.

She considered taking leave but decided that didn’t make sense because things likely wouldn’t be better by the time she’d need to return.

“I love teaching; it’s a second career for me,” said Bradley, who’d previously been a technical writer. “I wasn’t burned out. So I wanted to keep teaching.”

Now she stays home, helping her own grandson with his iFla-

gler kindergarten classes.

Those reassignments have frustrated some teachers.

“I’d thought they would have done more for people at high risk,” Bradley said.

She said she appreciated the fact that the district extended an early retirement option that had been offered in June, allowing teachers to take it up through September.

“The response to the pandemic in general is what is causing this problem, not my school district,” Bradley said. “I don’t really have a lot to say against my school district: They went with numbers, and, granted, parents have a lot of say. But I guess teachers don’t feel that their health and wellbeing is being thought of in the same way.”

WHAT DOES 2021 LOOK LIKE?

School Board members and district Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt spoke of the pandemic’s effect on the district during an Oct. 20 School Board meeting.

“Superintendent Mittelstadt is making sure that every part of our community is being heard, listened to and collaborated with to make improvements as we all figure out this new system that we have,” School Board Chairwoman Janet McDonald said.

Mittelstadt said the district is awaiting guidance from the state on the future of its remote-live leaning option.

“I’ve been approached by parents in our community regarding our innovative learning model — the one in which our teachers are remotely teaching into the homes

While the district wants to make sure it offers great opportunities for students who need to be served in their home environment rather than at school, she added, “I do think it’s critically important that we look at the heavy load that we’ve placed on our teachers regarding how to do that mixed model. ... We don’t want these unintended consequence from this pandemic to lose great teaching or employees.

Throughout our district, we’ve lost employees in all aspects of how we’re trying to keep moving our district forward.”

The 0.66-acre parcel on which the restaurant will be located is on the small side for a commercial site and is also encumbered by two easements that lead to a Dollar General and other parcels to the west, making the typical landscape layout infeasible.

So the applicant, Bingham Realty, sought the city planning board’s approval for an alternative landscape plan that keeps the required number of plantings but shifts them to revised locations.

“It’s a very small lot,” Palm Coast Deputy Chief Development Officer Ray Tyner said at a Nov. 4 Planning and Land Development Regulation Board meeting. “We were able to make the site plan work with a Checkers. Checkers is typically a pretty small building. ... Our landscape architect worked with their landscape architect to make sure they comply with our code.”

The actual restaurant building will be just 954 square feet, with a drive-thru, bathrooms and an outdoor seating area.

Checkers restaurants, which serve burgers, fries, hotdogs and milkshakes, don’t have indoor seating. Construction is expected to start near the beginning of 2021.

The planning board voted 7-0 to approve the proposed technical site plan and landscape plan.

‘I would do it again’ KIMBERLY NORMAN PALM COAST PUBLIC RELATIONS

Some things in life you just don’t forget.

Ask Billy Jones about his military service in the U.S. Army, and he can recall the exact time served: 22 years, 3 months, 21 days.

“I’d like to do it again, if I was younger,” Jones said. “I had too much fun, too many experiences.”

Jones joined the Army on June 10, 1958, after graduating from Henderson State Teachers College. At 23, he entered his military career as a second lieutenant and distinguished military graduate. His first roles were armor officer, working with tanks, and then transportation core officer, working in aviation.

During this time, he was promoted to first lieutenant. Jones then went to flight school to learn how to fly airplanes and helicopters. In 1962, he went to Germany, assigned to the helicopter unit — 11th transportation company — and was there for more than a year.

“I flew a lot of senators and congressmen while I was in Germany, I flew several when I was in Vietnam, but the most important persons I flew were the American soldier,” Jones said.

In 1966, he was promoted from captain to major and sent into combat in Vietnam. Jones was assigned to the 282nd Aviation Company. He spent a year there supporting the maintenance unit for all helicopters as part of the company. In 1970, Jones would then serve another year-long tour in Vietnam.

Once back in the U.S., he was assigned to the Army Material

Command Project Manager’s Office for the attack helicopter program. In 1980, Jones retired from the U.S. Army. He then went on to work in the banking industry for 18 years.

During his military service, he set sights on Palm Coast. He bought a property in the early 1970s, but then later bought a different lot and moved to Palm Coast in 1997 with Jo, his wife of 63 years.

Jones has been active in the local community by being a guest speaker and coordinator of the group Veterans in the Classroom, coordinator of the Chain Gang at local football games, a C.O.P. (Citizen Observer Patrol) with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, a driver for a disabled veterans group, a member of the Military Officers Association of America, member of the American Legion, member of the Veterans Advisory Council in Flagler County and a poll volunteer.

“Veterans have sacrificed their lives to protect this country so that you can have a place to live, and a place to go to school and a place to enjoy,” Jones said.

A FAMILY LEGACY

Honoring veterans is also part of what defines another Palm Coast resident: Frank Consentino Jr. “The reason I joined the Navy in the first place was because it was a family tradition,” Consentino said. “I come from a family with a long military history. The history of the extended Consentino family goes back to the Seven Years’ War in Canada, and continues to the present. Forty-nine members of my family have served in the military with 239 years of com-

Consentino said of his relatives in the military, “They’ve served in every military branch except the U.S. Coast Guard. Some were wounded in action, and some were POWs, but by the grace of God, every one of them came home.”

After joining the U.S. Navy at 18 years old, Consentino served four years of active duty and two years in the Navy Reserves between the Korean and the Vietnam Wars.

Aboard the USS Bennington CVA-20, Consentino was a radarman, as part of the Combat Information Center. Later, he was sent to Naha, Okinawa, and served in FASRON 118 (a Fleet Aircraft Support Squadron) for 18 months.

Following that, he was transferred to another aircraft carrier, the USS Midway CVA -41, which is now a permanent museum in San Diego.

“I would do it again in a heartbeat,” Consentino said. “It’s a good experience for a young man, gives you a chance to travel, see the world, grow up, and truly become a man on your own. As I said, I had an opportunity to go to a lot of places, mostly all in the Pacific, and I would do it again.”

Following his military career, he worked for 19 years as a field service engineer for a company that built X-ray machines. Then he opened his own business called New England Mega-Volts Inc. For 36 years he traveled all over the U.S. and parts of Canada selling, installing and repairing X-ray machines.

lived in Palm Coast since 2006.

He is active in the community and part of several local groups.

He has been a past-president and past-lieutenant governor with the Flagler-Palm Coast Kiwanis Club, a board member of the Family Life Center, the Color Corps Commander for the Knights of Columbus, poet laureate for the Flagler County library, and is an award-winning published author.

As he stays involved with residents in Palm Coast, he tries to help veterans and others as much as he can.

“We’re a brotherhood,” Consentino said. “When you’re in the military, you form friendships, and you know what these other guys went through, maybe not every single detail, but you pretty much know what happened to them as veterans.”

EVENT PLANNED

The city of Palm Coast and Flagler County were scheduled to host a combined Veterans Day event honoring local veterans on Nov. 11 (at the time the Palm Coast Observer goes to press).

The event was scheduled to feature a ceremony at the Flagler Auditorium, hosted by Flagler County. It was live-streamed from the auditorium to Central Park for those who did not want to drive from one location to the other.

Veterans and their families were then invited to join the city of Palm Coast for a barbecue lunch from Hot Diggity Dog at Central Park. Both events were free.

A CLASSIC THEATRE PRESENTS

Incoming House Speaker Chris Sprowls last week rolled out a leadership team and committee changes, including a new committee — led by Ormond Beach representative Tom Leek (District 25) — that will be directed to look at the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and plan for future emergencies.

Palm Coast Republican Paul Renner, who is in line to succeed Sprowls as speaker in November 2022, was named Rules Committee chairman.

Sprowls, a Palm Harbor Republican, takes the gavel on Nov. 17. He sent a memo to House members that named a dozen leaders for the next two years and outlined changes such as creation of the Pandemics & Public Emergencies Committee.

Leek will chair the Pandemics & Public Emergencies Committee and the Redistricting Committee, which will oversee the once-adecade reapportionment process for legislative and congressional seats. Redrawn districts are expected to be in place for the 2022 elections.

Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, D-Orlando, tweeted that a legislative look into the pandemic is long overdue.

Nursing home residents can leave and return amid COVID-19 Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration, which has made a concerted effort to scale back restrictions enacted because of the coronavirus, wants to make it easier for residents of long-term care facilities to reunite with families for the holidays — even it means forgoing COVID-19 testing.

The DeSantis administration last week provided answers to questions that nursing homes and other senior centers have about the state’s visitation policies, including whether residents can leave for the holidays and whether they have to be tested when they return.

They don’t.

Instead, the state is allowing residents to return to facilities after being screened for COVID19-like symptoms. If they don’t pass screening, the residents would be quarantined and isolated based on federal guidelines.

AARP Florida already has raised concerns about a lack of testing.

A woman in blue scrubs slipped a bag-valve mask over patient Leanne’s nose after her surgery and gave her a few slow breaths — one ... two ... three — while a colleague held the patient behind her flipper.

“Since they’re reptiles, they need a little encouragement to breathe,” said Catherine Eastman, the sea turtle program manager at the Sea Turtle Hospital at the University of Florida’s Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience.

Leanne, a green sea turtle, is the latest patient at the Sea Turtle Hospital to undergo surgery to remove tumors caused by an illness called Fibropapillomatosis.

The illness, which the hospital specializes in treating and studying, leaves lesions on the flippers, necks and faces of sea turtles in Florida and elsewhere.

A fundraising event on Oct. 27 brought in $8,350 for the hospital from Coastal Cloud, the Hammock Beach Resort and other sponsors — money that will help pay for the turtles’ food and for the veterinarians and vet techs that treat them.

“We are so lucky to have this amazing research facility in our community ... and the Sea Turtle Hospital is just one piece of that,” Sara Hale, who co-founded and manages Coastal Cloud with her husband Tim Hale, said on WNZF Radio’s “Free For All Friday” program on Oct. 30. “We’ve been happy to help the raise their membership and get donations and volunteers in any way that we can there. But everyone should know that the hospital does need donations and sponsorships to help keep it running, so anyone who also loves sea turtles and wants to help should reach out and help this amazing hospital that we have right here in our community.”

Meanwhile, the lab has raised $14.5 million for a new lab building and is hoping the state will match it.

“We have professors getting these really hard-to-get grants, and they expect your facility to be at a certain level,” said Jessica Long, the Whitney Lab’s senior director of advancement.

“We are so lucky to have this amazing research facility in our community ... and the Sea Turtle Hospital is just one piece of that.”

THE ILLNESS

Fibropapillomatosis, or FP, was part of the impetus for the creation of the Sea Turtle Hospital, which had its fifth anniversary in October.

“It was a disease we weren’t used to seeing in this part of the state,” said Eastman.

Eastman has been working with sea turtles since the 1990s, when she began doing nesting surveys as a student at Florida Atlantic University.

“They’re almost the canary in the coal mine — they demonstrate the health of the ecosystem,” she said.

The hospital’s 36th patient this year, named Richard, was released on Nov. 4. The hospital usually has about 45 long-term patients per year.

In Florida, FP was first noticed in turtles around the Keys, then became prevalent in the Indian River Lagoon in the 1990s. There’s a virus involved, but it’s not clear how it’s transmitted from turtle to turtle, and the few hardy critters that eat sea turtles don’t seem to contract it.

FP can be debilitating: One turtle at the hospital, named Victor Frankenstein (the hospital has started naming its turtles after famous scientists, including fictional ones), had lesions around both eyes, impairing vision.

Others have flipper lesions that impede swimming or leave the turtle prone to tangling in fishing gear. The hospital has had to amputate flippers for that reason.

Staff try to strike a balance between science and conservation. Sea turtles’ endangered status means that experimentation that might answer some of the open questions about FP must go through a permitting process.

THE PATIENTS

The typical turtle patient stays 6 to 9 months at the hospital before release, spending most of its time outside the operating room in one of a handful of large white tanks onsite.

Staff and volunteers feed them a daily diet of seafood, greens and vitamins. (The older green sea turtles are exclusively vegetarian.)

Some young turtles are puppylike in their curiosity about the people who dole out their meals, while others fear people and their unfamiliar surroundings, swimming their tanks frantically and prompting staff and volunteers to construct turtle hides out of plastic and PVC. “If they freak out, we try a little shelter,” Eastman said.

Staff made imitation kelp out of the sliced-up strips of tough, cloth-like material used to clean cars in mechanical car washes, tying the material to bases of PVC. Most of the seven turtles in the tanks on Nov. 10 were young — about 5-7 years.

“As they age and they get older, they become more and more wild,” Eastman said. The hospital recently released an older patient, she added, “And that animal didn’t want anything to do with us.”

The hospital also tends to washbacks, newly hatched sea turtles that have been pushed back to shore by a storm.

It’s not clear how much of a threat FP poses at the population level. Hospital staff are grateful for being able to save the patients they can.

“Is it enough to say it helps the population?” Eastman said. “No, but every little bit helps.”

SEA TURTLE HOSPITAL RELEASES ITS FIRST SATELLITE-TAGGED TURTLE Staff at the Sea Turtle Hospital at UF Whitney Laboratory released the hospital’s first satellite-tagged sea turtle on Nov. 4.

Named “Richard Dawkins” after the evolutionary biologist, the midsized juvenile was the hospital’s 36th this year, and became a patient after becoming stranded on a beach on April 22, according to a news release from the hospital.

The turtle had tumors caused by the Fibropapillomatosis disease, which the hospital treats and researches. The hospital’s staff hope that tracking Richard will provide important data about where turtles her size go in the winter, and where they eat.

“We are lucky to have a ‘largefor-us’ sized turtle that fit the size requirements for a satellite tag,” said Catherine Eastman, Sea Turtle Hospital Program Manager. “It’s exciting to see Richard’s movements so far and share his journey with the public.”

Getting real on peoples highlight reels (aka Social Media)

We’ve all seen it... The mom who posts pictures of her child(ren) with matching outfits - stain free of course - and looking flawless herself! Based on her posts, she looks so successful at work and seems to have the “perfect” relationship with her husband.

What’s missing from the posts are close ups of the two prior kiddo outfit changes after juice was spilled or of her face on the other six days a week that she’s too tired or overwhelmed to put on her makeup, the sleepless nights worried about deadlines and if she’s been working too much or post about the fact that she and her husband are in such a busy season of their life that they feel like ships passing in the night.

I bet that “perfect” mom is a lot more like you than you think.

There are many reasons that we use social media: work, sharing, building confidence, and more.

We often take what we’re seeing at surface value, but is that always the case? People don’t tend to share their negative news on social media, and if they did, it wouldn’t be a very fun place to visit. That’s why we so often hear it referred to as a highlight

reel.

There are times when pictures of day-to-day lives are shared to keep in touch with a long distance relative or friend. Brady and I’s extended family live all over the country. We definitely use social media so that they can see how Elijah is growing and changing and to keep them updated on what’s going on in our busy, toddler-run lives.

We’re all longing for connection, especially in these last several months. Sometimes it might be a simple post about their favorite TV show and other times, it can go deeper - perhaps sharing something she’s been working on or working through. Just like when we’re planning a wedding, we share those steps with the world and often end up connecting with other brides to be or wedding vendors. When we go through difficult times, we may also be searching for someone who understands what we’re going through or just hoping someone will listen.

As we head into the holidays, it can often feel like everyone you know has the perfect decorations, cooking skills, or even child(ren).

[Ha!] Always remember we are watching a highlight reel, of a human being, and on the other side of that account, she’s doing the best she can as a mama, wife, friend, daughter, whatever, with the tools she believes she has available, just like you.

he Matanzas Pirates (5-3) defeated the Pedro Menendez Falcons 13-3 on Friday, Nov. 6, at Matanzas.

After two quarters tied at 3-3, Pirate Jermaine Walker punched in the only touchdown of the game from a yard out, and kicker Stephen Usina added a second field goal in the fourth quarter to expand Matanzas’ lead.

With the victory, Matanzas won secured its first winning season since 2017, and the Pirates earned the right to host a play-in game for the playoffs.

Matanzas will play New Smyrna Beach Friday in said game on Friday, Nov. 13, at Matanzas.

“It was an amazing experience,” Cronk said, “but most of all, fun. This entire year has been hectic and unexpected. With such an unpredictable year, I didn’t expect to win any race, so to win both the 100 and 200 freestyles was the greatest feeling.

It’s always the best feeling when you can reach one of your goals.

So, walking away with two more medals to add to the collection is always nice.”

Cronk, a University of Florida commit, finished the 200-meter race in 1:46:23, but she nearly broke her 100-meter record from last year (48:20) with a 48:78, which even surprised herself.

“This year, training has been very different,” she said. “At the height of the coronavirus, all pools were shut down, and there was no place to swim. I was forced to do exercises at home until we could get back in, which would be months later.”

When it comes to Micayla’s devotion to swimming and her work ethic, no one quite understands these like her mother,

“States may have been the end of my high school swimming career, but the rest of this year is just beginning.”

Jennifer, who daily drives her three hours roundtrip to practice in Oviedo. Jennifer has seen her daughter blossom from a 7-yearold beginner in the Florida Age Group to a high school seventime champion, a college commit and even an Olympic Trial participant.

“Micayla has a very bright future,” Jennifer said. “Micayla’s drive in the pool carries over in all aspects of her life. She has a tenacity that allows her to strive for greatness in everything she pursues.

She’s got her sights set on the Olympics one day and will be swimming at Olympic Trials in June. We are extremely proud of this beautiful young lady that is our daughter.”

Just a day after she returned home from states, Cronk hit the interstate again and headed to practice.

When asked about a lack of a break, she said, “Next, I’ve got the U.S. Open this coming weekend, and in December I have Junior Nationals.

Next spring, I will be at the Olympic Trials. States may have been the end of my high school swimming career, but the rest of this year is just beginning.”

Jessica DeFord named as new principal at Belle Terre Elementary

Cara Cronk: Bossardet hired to develop future leaders new principal BUDDY TAYLOR PRINCIPALS at Buddy Taylor Middle School

Flagler Schools Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt is recommending Jessica DeFord as the 4th principal of Belle Terre Elementary School. DeFord has served as interim principal for the school since last January.

“Jessica has steered Belle Terre Elementary through some challenging times as Interim Principal. She is ready to lead the staff and students and has a solid plan to ensure BTES maintains the high standards everyone connected with the campus demands,” Mittelstadt said.

“It is an honor to be named principal of Belle Terre Elementary Schoo,” DeFord said. “Over the past five years, I’ve built many relationships here at Belle Terre.

Education is the most important and impactful career in the world.

Not only am I excited to continue my career in a high achieving district, but I am also excited to lead a school where teachers and staff have a passion for ensuring the success of every student. Moving forward, the students, staff, and community of Belle Terre Elementary will learn and grow together.”

DeFord received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Teaching from St. Leo University in 2001. She earned a Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of North Florida in 2003.

She came to Flagler Schools in 2013 as a teacher and became an assistant principal at Belle Terre Elementary School in 2016. Prior to her career in Flagler, she taught in Brevard and Putnam counties.

Jessica is married to Kenneth DeFord, a teacher at Bunnell Elementary. Their son Blane is a junior at FPC, and their daughter Myla, a 2017 FPC graduate, is a combat medic with the U.S. Army.

Flagler Schools Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt is recommending Cara Cronk as the 11th principal of Buddy Taylor Middle School. Cronk is currently an assistant principal at BTMS. “Cara has a vision for Buddy Taylor Middle School. She has been a vital member of Principal Bossardet’s team and I am confident she will do a great job in continuing the growth seen at Buddy Taylor,” Mittelstadt said.

Cronk is excited to begin this next chapter in her career. “I am humbled and honored to be named the principal of Buddy Taylor Middle School,” she said.

“Over the past few years, we have strived to reignite the student, faculty, and community pride in Buddy Taylor Middle School.

I am committed to growing the positive climate and culture that we have firmly established while ensuring our students and staff have all the supports they need to reach their maximum potential.“ Cronk is in her 25th year in education. She has been an assistant principal at Buddy Taylor Middle School since 2018, after serving as an assistant principal at Matanzas High School for two years.

Cara attended Florida Atlantic University for her undergraduate degree in Education. She earned her Master’s in Educational Leadership and Administration from American College of Education. She’s worked with Flagler Schools since August 2004.

She was named Flagler Schools Assistant Principal of the Year in 2018. Cara has two daughters, and her husband Justin Cronk is an educator at Indian Trails Middle School.

To start, he had the district develop a grade-point-average calculator so that each Buddy Taylor student could easily assess how they were doing in real time.

Rather than intimidate struggling students, the increased attention to their grades helped them to see where they needed to improve when they still had time to adjust; it gave them a goal. When Bossardet met with students, he would always check their GPA. Attendance was poor at Buddy Taylor, so he and his staff brainstormed ways to improve. They came up with Fresh Fridays, where students were encouraged to dress up in a shirt and tie or a dress. If they did so, they earned a chance to win a new pair of Vans shoes.

And the kids bought in.

“We would have 250 kids in shirts and ties,” he said. “It looked like we were about to have a dance.”

Attendance improved. Discipline problems decreased.

“You create an environment where kids want to be here,” he said.

Bossardet consulted with every staff member and valued their input, from office staff to head custodian Ron Crowley. “That man is one of the best human beings I’ve ever met,” Bossardet said. “He’s mentored more kids in Flagler County from being the custodian at BTMS for so long — he’s the eyes and ears, he knows who’s coming in hungry. He knows which teachers are coming in early, staying late. I lean on him for advice on everything.”

Bossardet also brought in a former FPC student, Enosch Henry, who, with his friend Chris Bitalien had created a clothing line called Rise to Greatness that had become popular while Bossardet was a dean at FPC. (“Technically it wasn’t in dress code, but he let it slide,” Henry recalled.)

with pride, and Bossardet wanted to replicate that effect at Buddy Taylor. When Henry visited the school, he also saw a familiar face again: Michelle Coolican, his former middle school teacher.

With Bossardet’s encouragement, Henry was invited into her classroom, where he inspired the students. “The way life is, you can make it anything you want to be,” Henry recalled saying, “you’ve just got to put the work in.”

Henry’s visit to her classroom was memorable for Coolican not only because the students were excited to meet a young entrepreneur who looked like them, but also because it showed Bossardet’s gift for inclusion — and for developing relationships with everybody.

“He connects with those kids on a different level,” Coolican said of Bossardet. “He connects with every kid.”

SET YOUR OWN GOALS

Now that Bossardet is in the district office, he plans to encourage mentorship not only of students but of fellow teachers and staff.

He believes in drawing on the talents of every adult to take an active role in the lives of students.

Coolican said his approach is “empowering.”

When she first met Bossardet, he encouraged her to pursue her own innovative ideas, including bringing hands-on learning projects to students, including a trip

to the University of Florida.

“He treats you like a professional,” she said. “He inspires you but also allows you to do your own thing. He supports innovative things and creativity, as long as it’s best for the kids.”

Coolican wrote grant proposals and fulfilled her vision for the class that year, exposing some kids to a museum for the first time in their lives. Bossardet was impressed. He told her, “This is something special. Document this.”

She did so, and she was recognized as the Flagler Schools Teacher of the Year in January 2020.

“I’ve been at Buddy Taylor for 15 years,” she said. “I feel like I’m a good teacher, a veteran teacher.

But he empowers you to be that level better. So I don’t think I would have accomplished the goals I did in the last year without that push and support.”

Stacia Collier, a Buddy Taylor assistant principal whom Bossardet called “brilliant,” said Bossardet’s coach-like approach — encouraging everyone to set and reach their own goals — made him a remarkable principal. Some leaders try to give you a goal; he let you set your own, and that made everyone more motivated to achieve them.

“I’m sad he’s leaving, but he’s helped so many people on this campus realize that they’re a leader, too,” she said. She added: “Bobby Bossardet is a world-class leader and brings a fresh lens to the district office.”

Coolican believes Bossardet will continue to help Flagler Schools thrive.

“He’ll be missed,” Coolican said. “But the great part is, all his fantastic ideas and support and passion for students and teaching — he’s now able to do that at a large-scale model. So if he can bring what he did at Buddy Taylor to the Flagler school district — we’re already an A — we’re going to knock it out of the park.”

Flagler Schools students had a day off but on Tuesday, Nov. 3, for Election Day, but the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Deputy Unit used the vacant Buddy Taylor Middle School to conduct tactical medical training for first responders.

FCSO Deputy First Class Sam Bell, a certified Federal Law Enforcement Training Center instructor in Tactical First Aid, guided the training session designed to educate law enforcement on techniques to treat life-threatening and non-life threatening injuries in critical situations.

Additionally, the training covered Tactical Evacuation Care.

“We pray the day never comes when this type of training would be needed, but by training our team like our SRDs it will save lives and reduce injuries, as minutes matter in emergency trauma care,” Sheriff Rick Staly said.

Currently, there are 13 deputies assigned to the SRD unit at the FCSO, including a sergeant and a supervisor.

VOLUNTEERS HELP REMOVE BRAZILIAN PEPPER TREES

Flagler County Land Management, with the help of community volunteers, has been hard at work in Betty Steflik Memorial Preserve removing Brazilian pepper trees, an invasive plant species.

“Land Management Specialist Robert Detherow led a dedicated group of volunteers who worked for two weeks removing Brazilian pepper trees from along the trails and natural areas of the park,” said Environmental Projects Supervisor Michael Lagasse.

The piles of brush left the in park on the eastern portion of the parking lot are a visible result of the work accomplished. Once the brush has dried, it can then be disposed of properly.

Hammock Dunes home sells for $1.7 million

house in Hammock Dunes was the top real estate transaction for the week of Oct. 1-7 in Flagler County in the Multiple Listing Service. Denise and Samuel Jenkins, individually and as trustees, sold 130 Island Estates Parkway to James and Anna Ferro, of Channahon, Illinois, for $1.7 million. Built in 2000, the house is a 4/4 and has three halfbaths, fireplace, swimming pool, boat dock and 6,502 square feet. It sold in 2016 for $1.38 million.

Getting real on peoples highlight reels (aka Social Media)

We’ve all seen it... The mom who posts pictures of her child(ren) with matching outfits - stain free of course - and looking flawless herself! Based on her posts, she looks so successful at work and seems to have the “perfect” relationship with her husband.

What’s missing from the posts are close ups of the two prior kiddo outfit changes after juice was spilled or of her face on the other six days a week that she’s too tired or overwhelmed to put on her makeup, the sleepless nights worried about deadlines and if she’s been working too much or post about the fact that she and her husband are in such a busy season of their life that they feel like ships passing in the night.

I bet that “perfect” mom is a lot more like you than you think.

There are many reasons that we use social media: work, sharing, building confidence, and more.

We often take what we’re seeing at surface value, but is that always the case? People don’t tend to share their negative news on social media, and if they did, it wouldn’t be a very fun place to visit. That’s why we so often hear it referred to as a highlight

There are times when pictures of day-to-day lives are shared to keep in touch with a long distance relative or friend. Brady and I’s extended family live all over the country. We definitely use social media so that they can see how Elijah is growing and changing and to keep them updated on what’s going on in our busy, toddler-run lives.

We’re all longing for connection, especially in these last several months. Sometimes it might be a simple post about their favorite TV show and other times, it can go deeper - perhaps sharing something she’s been working on or working through. Just like when we’re planning a wedding, we share those steps with the world and often end up connecting with other brides to be or wedding vendors. When we go through difficult times, we may also be searching for someone who understands what we’re going through or just hoping someone will listen.

As we head into the holidays, it can often feel like everyone you know has the perfect decorations, cooking skills, or even child(ren).

[Ha!] Always remember we are watching a highlight reel, of a human being, and on the other side of that account, she’s doing the best she can as a mama, wife, friend, daughter, whatever, with the tools she believes she has available, just like you.

he Matanzas Pirates (5-3) defeated the Pedro Menendez Falcons 13-3 on Friday, Nov. 6, at Matanzas.

After two quarters tied at 3-3, Pirate Jermaine Walker punched in the only touchdown of the game from a yard out, and kicker Stephen Usina added a second field goal in the fourth quarter to expand Matanzas’ lead.

With the victory, Matanzas won secured its first winning season since 2017, and the Pirates earned the right to host a play-in game for the playoffs.

Matanzas will play New Smyrna Beach Friday in said game on Friday, Nov. 13, at Matanzas.

Ethan Dattilio has set a Matanzas passing record this season, having thrown 15 touchdowns.
