County commissioners admonish Mullins Commissioners declined to censure Mullins, who’d called one commissioner a ‘fat son of a b----.’

Flagler County commissioners upbraided commissioner Joe Mullins Sept. 21 for his profane outburst at a previous County Commission meeting, but stopped short of formally censuring him.

A motion to censure Mullins died in a three-two vote, with the two commissioners Mullins had personally insulted — Commissioner Greg Hansen, who Mullins had called a “fat son of a b----,” and Commissioner Charlie Ericksen, whose Mullins had called old and lazy — voting in favor of censure, while Mullins and commissioners David Sullivan and Donald O’Brien voted against censure.

A group of residents also came to speak against Mullins — recommending that the commission censure him and prevent him from taking the rotating position of chairman when his turn comes up in November — while other residents spoke to defend Mullins.

RESIDENT CONCERNS

Resident complaints about Mullins have become a common feature at County Commission meetings, often stemming from Mullins’ behavior on Facebook,

where he’s mocked people for their weight, offered to send Trump supporters to Democrats’ homes for a “Trump welcome,” suggested putting liberals on a train and driving them out of Flagler, and on multiple occasions falsely accused people of having had sex reassignment surgery or of pursuing it.

A half-dozen residents speaking during the Sept. 21 meeting referred to that kind of behavior, as well as to Mullins’ recent outburst at the dais, as they urged the commission to censure Mullins and prevent him from becoming the commission’s chairman.

Mike Cocchiola told the commission it needs to decide between unity and further division during a divisive election season.

“You’re going to have to make a choice between further dividing Flagler County — to bring hate, fear and chaos to Flagler County — or to try to heal the wounds of this election,” he said. “It’s going to be your choice what you want to do, as to whether Flagler County will come together or will continue to be divided.”

A handful of people spoke in Mullins’ favor, with one man saying, “He may not always be politically correct, but he is politically effective.”

chambers without masks — violating the building’s rule — and were refusing to leave.

Sheriff Rick Staly was calming the anti-mask crowd when Mullins said he wanted to weigh in, but Sullivan and Hansen told him not to, angering Mullins.

The anti-mask group began shouting, and Sullivan called for the meeting to adjourn for 15 minutes.

As deputies began guiding the audience out of the room, Mullins walked over to Hansen, jabbed a finger at him and called Hansen a “fat son of a b----” and also insulted Ericksen.

Mullins briefly apologized to Hansen before the meeting resumed, saying he’d misspoken.

Within a few days, Mullins was back on Facebook mocking Hansen’s weight.

But on Sept. 18, Mullins emailed his fellow commissions, writing that he wanted to “sincerely apologize about my action in a very intense situation. As I said during the meeting I am truly sorry for inappropriate remarks and actions.”

He did not mention Hansen or Ericksen by name, but said, “I by no means want our great accomplishments we have all been able to achieve as a team the last two years to be overshadowed by personal issues. espite the pandemic, new home construction is booming in Palm Coast and Flagler Beach.

The 154 permits issued in August was the most in a month in about 15 years, according to Palm Coast Chief Development Officer Jason DeLorenzo.

“We’re building a lot of houses,” he said. “People are still moving here.”

Meanwhile, in Flagler Beach, Rick McFadden remembers that there was just one home under construction when he was first hired by the city nine years ago.

Today, the chief building official, who is doubling as interim city manager, said there are 40 homes under construction.

“Flagler Beach is a wonderful place to be, and people are knocking down the doors to get in,” McFadden said on WNZF’s “Free For All Friday,” Sept. 18.

The gas station that’s going vertical west of the U.S. 1-Matanzas Woods Parkway roundabout will be an Amoco station. It’s the second Amoco station in Flagler County; Amoco also recently rebranded the former Interstate 100 gas station, at the southwest corner of Interstate 95 and State Road 100.

Behind the gas station, a storage facility is planned, but it’s not under construction yet.

The smaller roundabout west of U.S. 1 will eventually connect to the new Sawmill Creek subdivision to the north, though that is a few phases away. Sawmill has four model homes and a total of about a dozen homes under construction, DeLorenzo said.

Flagler Health+ announced in 2019 that it was planning to build a Health Village at the southeast corner of Belle Terre Parkway and Matanzas Woods Parkway. The first building, a two-story medical office, has been approved by the city.

“It is anticipated that the Flagler Health+ Village at Palm Coast will incorporate family practice with embedded behavioral health services, women’s care, urgent care, orthopedics, imaging and laboratory services all within a community-centric setting,” a press release stated. “The project will incorporate dedicated green space for healthy lifestyle programming, arts activities and events and will likely include a key community engagement partner.”

The property, formerly owned by Palm Coast United Methodist Church, will eventually also have a second Flagler Health building, but that’s in a future phase, DeLorenzo said.

INTERSECTION Improvements will begin soon on the intersection at Old Kings Road and Palm Coast Parkway. The Florida Department of Transportation is funding the $6.5 million project, with the city contributing about $400,000 for lighting, design and fiber relocation.

During the project, 8-foot-wide pedestrian paths will be added on both sides of the intersection, from the southern end of Kingswood Drive to Kings Way Road. There will also dedicated turn lanes, and he traffic signal at Kings Way Road will be upgraded from a span wire to a mast arm signal as well.

The Old Kings improvements will take close to a year MCDONALD’S South of Palm Coast Parkway, at 2 Old Kings Road, McDonald’s is planning a major remodel.

Water Homes, said his company typically builds custom homes, but many of his recent clients are retiring early and want a new home now, rather than going through the process of design. As a result, Curbow has shifted his business to more spec homes, or houses built without a contract yet, to speed up the process. In the next 12 months, Blue Water Homes will build more spec homes than it did in the previous 24.

"It's pretty exciting," he said.

"We all expected things were going to slow down because of the coronavirus, and that didn't happen."

Permits of all types are also holding steady in Palm Coast, with about 300 per month throughout the year, regardless of the pandemic.

DeLorenzo said applications for permits for duplexes are more popular. “Five years ago, there were zero,” he said. But since Sept. 1, 2020, there have been five duplex permits.

A developer hoping to build 335 homes along John Anderson Highway must first address Flagler County commissioners’ concerns about potential flooding and traffic issues before the board will hold a vote on his proposal.

Commissioners voted unanimously Sept. 21 to table a proposal for a preliminary plat and planned unit development amendment request by Ken Belshe, the developer of the proposed development called The Gardens.

The decision followed dozens of comments by local residents who said they were concerned that the development would overtax the local roads, flood their properties during storms and degrade the environment, including nearby Bulow Creek.

Attorney Michael Chiumento represented Belshe, telling the commission that he’d heard resident concerns about traffic and water, but that the development had included traffic studies, and that the developer is already not permitted, by law, to flood other properties.

But commissioners weren’t satisfied.

“You hit the nail on the head: It’s traffic and it’s water,” Commissioner Greg Hansen said. “And you’re incorrect that engineers don’t flood other properties; they do it all the time. Marineland Acres, they’re flooding each other out daily ... because of zoning rules and building rules, they built the new houses 2 feet higher than the existing houses, so now the existing houses flood.

“And that’s what you’re going to do,” he continued. “You’re going to comply and you’re going to build those homes and they’re going to be elevated, and the water’s going to run to Palm Drive and it’s going to run to every other place that surrounds you. So your water management is just crap.

This is what’s going to happen.

We’ve seen it. This commission right here got burned on that community up north. Our fault.

We let the developer talk us into, ‘Oh, I’m not going to flood the neighbors.’ And they did. They flooded the neighbors. And you’re going to do it. ... So, don’t give me that crap. Talk to me about what you’re going to do to prevent it, and you haven’t don’t that yet.”

Chiumento pointed out that the development would be run past the county’s engineer, the Department of Environmental Protection and the St. Johns Water Management District for approval, among others.

Commissioner David Sullivan also had concerns about how the development would impact traffic on John Anderson Highway.

Chiumento offered to have the development’s traffic expert, Sans Lassiter, address the board about traffic issues.

“I won’t believe him,” Hansen said.

Hansen voted to table the proposal until Oct. 19. The commission voted 5-0 to do so.

CARES provides contactless services at Flagler library HoldIT lockers and book sanitizers are on the way.

The Flagler County Public Library has received a $36,000 state CARES grant to enhance residents’ safety through the provision of more contactless services for the community in this era of COVID-19.

“The total funding available was only $1.9 million for all of the public, school and academic libraries, and all museums across the state of Florida,” said Library Director Holly Albanese. “This is a big deal for us. With 31% of our population older than 65 years old, we have a vulnerable population choosing to remain at home – forgoing library services – resulting in a decline in circulation.”

The lion’s share of the grant money will be used to purchase HoldIT lockers for contactless pick up. Book sanitizers that use UV-C light to kill germs and bacteria will mean that returned resources will be shelved more quickly and will no longer have to undergo a 24-hour quarantine.

“With the lockers, patrons can pick up their materials 24/7 and don’t have to be limited to our open hours for curbside,” Albanese said. “We also have a hand-held UV-C sanitizer that will allow us to quickly sanitize computer equipment, crafts and supplies enabling us to put things

Video equipment was also approved that will improve the quality of some of the virtual programs offered. Additionally, the library was able to purchase an online newspaper and magazine subscription service.

The application was made on behalf of Flagler County by the Northeast Florida Library Information Network. The NEFLIN library cooperative serves 24 counties, and its board selected only four recipients of the 21 submittals it received for CARES grant assistance – one of which was Flagler County.

“We miss the crowds at the library, but we continue to provide the highest level of service we are able to provide,” Albanese said.

BRIEFS County sets millage rate at 8.5847 Flagler County homeowners will pay $8.5847 per $1,000 in taxable property value this year in county property taxes.

The County Commission set the final millage rate and approved the budget for the year fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2021, during a commission meeting Sept. 21.

The General Fund rate of 8.1297 mills is an increase of 3.46% over the rollback rate — the rate that would bring in the same dollar amount as the 2020 rate — of 7.9789, Financial Services Director John Brower told commissioners at the meeting.

“This increase is necessary to fund the operations, obligations and missions of the county and our constitutional officers during the 2021 fiscal year,” Brower said.

In addition to the General Fund rate, taxpayers will be paying 0.1250 mills for Environmentally Sensitive Lands millage and 2016 Environmentally Sensitive Lands bonds, plus 0.2050 mills for 2015 general obligation bonds.

The overall county budget will be $196,653,624, according to county staff, with the General Fund budget taking up $98,120,652.

The county’s financial services department is expecting a property value increase of about 5%, bringing in about $2.6 million in additional tax revenue.

Major funding considerations for the coming year include a salary study which will be conduct-

ed by consulting firm Evergreen Solutions, creating a master plan for constitutional officers’ space needs, longterm funding for the fire service, and a sustainability and funding plan for the coastline.

Brad West hired to run city’s communications Brad West is the new chief communications officer for the city of Palm Coast.

West and his family have been residents of Palm Coast since 2004. West was a candidate who was considered when the communications officer position opened in 2019. Although things did not work out at that time, West has continued to keep in touch with City Manager Matthew Morton, offering communications best practices and suggestions over the months. More recently, the opportunity was revisited with West, and he agreed to accept the position. the position was previously held by Michael Schottey, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor after resigning under pressure as communications officer.

West is scheduled to start on Oct. 5.

“It’s been like a year-and-a-half long interview in some ways,” West said.

West brings a strong background to the position in communications and marketing in a community organization and in managing teams with over 15 years of experience in sales and operations management.

For the last seven years, West has served as the Digital Media

Coordinator for the Orlandobased Florida section of United States Tennis Association.

“I’ve remained impressed with Mr. West since the original interview over a year ago,” said Morton. “When I revisited the applicants, Brad’s experience, skills and capability continued to shine through. While Brad and I haven’t always seen eye-to-eye on every issue, I believe his critical analysis skills, transparent style and ability to address ideas and issues head on with our residents is critical to a successful communication partnership between our residents and their city.”

As chief communications officer, West will report to Morton.

He will manage a small team of communications professionals at City Hall. The team is charged with overseeing the city’s communications to help keep local residents informed and tell the city’s story to potential businesses and partners.

Palm Coast releases Floodplain Management Report The city of Palm Coast has completed its 2020 Annual Floodplain Management Report, which details the city’s strategies, projects and outreach efforts to protect citizens and property from flood disasters.

“We are one of the best in the state with a rating of 4,” said Denise Bevan, City Administration Coordinator. “This means that the city staff works extremely hard to reduce the risk of flood in our community while passing on the benefits to our residents.”

County hopes for October transfer of water utility Flagler County hopes to be out of the utility business by around the end of next month.

Flagler County hopes to be out of the utility business by around the end of October, turning the Plantation Bay utility system and two others over to the Florida Governmental Utility Authority, or FGUA. The other two facilities are at Eagle Lakes and Beverly Beach.

“There are a ton of things that have to be taken care of,” County Administrator Jerry Cameron said, warning that the timeline is tentative as the county contends with the transfer process for multiple facilities. “It’s a Herculean task to transfer this over.”

The Plantation Bay transfer is the most complex.

The utility at Plantation Bay became a source of resident frustration for years as locals complained of hard, discolored water.

The county bought the utility from developer ICI in 2013 for $5.5 million in coordination with the city of Bunnell, then took it over in its entirety. Still, residents complained about the water, prompting the county to explore other options.

The Eagle Lakes and Beverly Beach facilities are nearly ready for transfer, Cameron said.

The Eagle Lakes facility will be operated with the assistance of the city of Palm Coast.

“We’re all going to have to refurbish the treatment plant that’s out there, and that’s underway, but there are no really issues there,” Cameron said.

A new Operations Center for the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is now in the design phase, with a site plan showing a main twostory building of about 50,000 square feet, plus a one-story sally port and several areas set aside for future expansion and future parking expansion.

“The site plan has been completed, and they’re finishing up on the design factors,” County Administrator Jerry Cameron said. “We are hopefully, right after the first of the year, going to begin construction, and hopefully it will be finished within a year.”

The county now has a contractat-risk with a construction company for the work, he said.

“They are doing some value engineering ... to make sure that they get the most cost effective design,” Cameron said. “So [Sheriff Rick Staly] is dropping off some of the architectural niceties that you ordinarily would see in a public building because he wants to get square footage rather than glitz.”

The new Operations Center will be on Commerce Parkway, replacing an Operations Center on State Road 100 that the sheriff and his staff evacuated in June 2018 after employees began falling ill, and testing turned up mold.

That land had been previously been a hospital site and then sat vacant for years before the county purchased it for $1.23 million in 2013 and renovated it for the sheriff’s use as part of a $21.8 million loan that also funded other capital projects such as the jail.

The county sold the old ops center for $766,700 in August.

In the meantime, FCSO employees have been operating out of the jail administrative building and the county courthouse — an arrangement that both Sheriff Rick Staly and Clerk of Court Tom Bexley have said cramps their operations.

The county is also preparing a Palm Coast substation for the sheriff in the former Wachovia building on Palm Coast Parkway.

That building should be ready by January 2021, Cameron said.

fter months of a dropping COVID-19 positivity rate, Flagler County has experienced a spike that the Health Department has traced to three sources: school reopenings, an increase in cases at long term care facilities, and the county’s first superspreader event — a karaoke night at the Social Club of Palm Coast on Aug. 28 that was the source of dozens COVID-19 infections including two deaths and a few hospitalizations.

Bob Snyder, health officer for the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County, shared with the Palm Coast Observer his thoughts on how Flagler County is faring and what we can expect as more rapid testing kits make their way into the community.

So, I did report some sobering news, but at the same time positive news, two weeks ago at the County Commission meeting when I reported the National Geographic analysis stating that of all the counties in the state of Florida, we had the lowest case rate per 10,000 people.

Now we have the second lowest case rate per 10,000, with Brevard County being below us.

Comparatively speaking, we are doing well in contrast to other counties in the state.

It is true that for the last three or four weeks, we have experienced a spike in the county ... by the results of about seven or eight indicators we have been tracking. The positivity rate, the increase in cases, the increase in COVID-like symptoms for ER visits, hospitalizations — these things have been tracking higher than usual for the last three, four weeks.

Can you talk about the reasons for the spike?

We have identified three reasons for that. We have experienced positive cases related to students and staff in school, and that has resulted in individuals being isolated and classrooms being quarantined for a 14-day period. Things seem to have settled down a bit last week at school compared to the first three weeks.

The second reason for the spike has to do with an uptick in

our long term care facilities, particularly ... Grand Oaks and Tuscan Gardens. As of today, Tuscan Gardens has four residents who have tested positive and are in isolation, but zero staff. At Grand Oaks, the number has decreased from 18 residents to zero residents who are positive and 13 staff that are positive as of today. ... Things seem to be under control there at the moment.

The third reason for the uptick that we experienced relates to private social clubs in Flagler County. Numerous positive cases, including two deaths, traced back to a super-spreader event that occurred at the [Social Club of Palm Coast] on Aug. 28. ... When we sing, shout, scream, talk — the virus is carried by airborne droplets and aerosol, and our mouths and our noses are not covered with a mask, that is how it is spread.

The science is very clear on this from studies emanating from Europe, Asia and the United States.

From what I can tell, this is our very first super-spreader event.

So, this is what happens when individuals are complacent and not careful about social distancing and wearing masks: The result is passing on the virus from one person to another.

What about the changes in policies at nursing homes and long term care facilities?

It is still federal regulation that nursing homes continue to test their staff members, but the Florida Agency for Health Care

Administration did announce that assisted living facilities would no longer need to test their staff every two weeks.

But what is happening with both nursing homes and assisted living facilities is that they are going to be receiving the Abbott BinaxNOW rapid point of care diagnostic test.

We know now that our two nursing homes in town — Flagler Rehabilitation and Grand Oaks, and four of our assisted living facilities — have received their shipment of rapid tests.

The change in policy regarding visitation — I’m expecting that visitors will be screened and will be asked to don a mask and to social distance, but the main issue is making sure that everyone adheres to wearing a mask.

And you mentioned that schools are trending down again. Do you know why that might be?

I believe that everyone has gotten the message about the importance of social distancing and mask wearing. People are taking this very seriously, so I would imagine that that has a lot to do with it.

Is it true that when there’s a COVID-19 case in the younger grades, the whole class has to quarantine?

It totally depends on our contact tracing, which classes get quarantined, and which ones

don’t. It depends on the level of exposure, the number of people exposed.

But we can say that the younger classes — kindergarten, first grade, second grade — those are more likely to be quarantined because it’s harder for the younger classes to keep the masks on. So to play it safe, it’s the younger classes that usually get sent home to quarantine.

And you’ve also mentioned that rapid tests are starting to become available?

Two of our nursing homes and four of our assisted living facilities have received, or soon will receive, the Abbott rapid testing kits, which will provide COVID-19 results in 20 minutes.

This is welcome technology.

This is great for community testing. ... Getting test results so quickly can result in intervention that can be taken quickly — such as isolation, quarantining, infection control, assessment, review and identifying opportunities for improvement.

And also, 150 million Abbott rapid testing kits are being manufactured and will be ready for distribution by Oct. 1, and the state of Florida does anticipate distributing hundreds of the rapid test devices to health departments and others in the state. So we can not wait to start using this technology in a very broad way.

“This will enable us to put a minimum of three firefighters on all of our suppression apparatus,” King said. “This is the ideal – it’s much safer for the crew.”

FCSO forms digital forensics unit Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly has directed the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office’s Investigation Services Division to launch a Digital Forensics Unit.

The FCSO had previously used the Seminole and St. John County Sheriff’s Offices to evaluate digital evidence.

demanding payments by phone, according to the FCSO. While on the phone, the imposter tells the victim that their bill is past due and that their service will be disconnected unless they pay immediately.

The scammer instructs the victim to pay over the phone with a prepaid debit card, gift card, a third-party payment portal or by following a link in an email.

FPL has advised that they will never ask you to purchase a prepaid debit card or gift card, answer an email or go to a third party website to pay an invoice.

FCSO forms ‘Silent Guardians’ program The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents and business owners to help keep Flagler County safe by joining the FCSO Silent Guardians program.

When a crime occurs, the FCSO often seeks out anyone with a camera system near the incident or along a path of escape.

The Silent Guardians program will essentially be a database of surveillance cameras owned and operated by businesses, homeowners and renters throughout Flagler County.

The Sheriff’s Office will not monitor this security footage, but will contact the owner if a crime occurs and ask to review security footage.

Toward the end of the Sept. 21 meeting, Hansen motioned to have Mullins censured, noting that the commission relies on the ability to discuss issues without fear of harassment.

“Therefore, I move that this commission censure Mr. Mullins for his inappropriate and unprofessional actions at our last commission meeting,” Hansen said. “He willfully disregard instructions from the chair, he left his position and menacingly approached his fellow commissioners, and used threatening and abusive stance and verbiage. His actions were not only uncalled for, they have left an indelible stain on the fabric of Flagler County government.”

Ericksen seconded.

Mullins read the apology he’d emailed, then added, “One person can sincerely apologize, but it takes two to have peace. As far as I’m concerned, this is over and I’m ready to move forward.”

Commissioner Donald O’Brien wanted to say something as well.

“Mr. Mullins, your behavior at our last meeting was embarrassing and hurtful. You’ve admitted to that,” O’Brien said. “... This nonsense and lack of leadership results in a huge distraction and a waste of time for everybody,” he said.

O’Brien said he wondered if the dysfunction on the commission would make legislators less likely

to pick up the phone when Flagler calls.

But O’Brien he also called Hansen an “agitator, constantly poke, poke poking” with negative personal comments.

Ericksen said he’d been in a situation with Mullins a few months prior that had prompted him to complain to the sheriff.

And, Ericksen said, “I know I’m the oldest person on this thing, but when somebody starts calling me an old, lazy guy, that hurts. ...

We’ve got to do something that guarantees that we act like adults.”

Sullivan said he’d looked over the county records to see if the commission had ever censured one of its members. It had not done so since its formation in 1917.

“Censuring is a pretty significant action to take,” Sullivan said.

“I’m not sure it’s going to do the county or the board, or anyone, a lot of good.”

But, he said, “It is true that the actions and words used by Commissioner Mullins on Sept. 9 — I want to be specific, this is concerning his actions on Sept. 9 — were unacceptable, especially since they were directed specifically at commissioners Hansen and Ericksen. ... There has been an apology made, so I would like at this point to do something along the lines of a consensus that we all agree that it was bad action at that point in time, but I personally, as chairman, don’t want to be the chairman who’s the chairman when we voted to censure someone.”

Sullivan did not allow public comment before the 3-2 vote.

ne goal of a beach cleanup, of course, is to clean the beach.

But some of the organizers of the International Coastal Cleanup on Sept.

19 in Flagler Beach hoped that such visible events will also inspire people not to litter in the first place, and that some day there won’t be a need for a beach cleanup.

The event was organized by the Friends of A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway, with Marge Rooyakkers as president. Carla Cline and Flagler Beach Mayor Linda Provencher, who also organize cleanups every month with a group called the Flagler Beach All-Stars, were on the pier as the 200 volunteers registered and were given garbage bags and gloves.

“Hopefully the communication to stop leaving the trash around will spread,” Cline said. “No more beach cleanups is the goal.”

Tom Gillin, Ocean Rescue director, was hopeful that it could happen some day, considering how many teenagers were participating with groups from school, including the Matanzas High School Key Club.

“It shows that the younger generation is in tune,” he said.

“It’s the whole attitude. People are showing that we just need to keep the environment clean.”

As the groups began to scour the sand for trash, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz arrived, along with Rooyakkers, who is hopeful that A1A will soon be named an AllAmerican Road.

“We live in a beautiful state, and we have to keep it that way,” Waltz said. “What I love about events like this is it’s a community coming together. It’s not a government program.”

Six weeks before the General Election, the Palm Coast Democratic Club has a new leader: Donna Giglio, a retired school teacher, joined the club’s board a year ago and was recently named president.

The former president, Bob Coffman, resigned to run for Palm Coast City Council.

Giglio went to school at St. John’s University and then Queens College, in New York. After teaching in New York, she moved in 1989 to Palm Coast, where she taught at Bunnell Elementary, Wadsworth Elementary, Indian Trails Middle and finally Belle Terre Elementary.

The Palm Coast Democratic Club provides support to the county’s Democratic Executive Committee and promotes participation among Democrats to support national, state and local candidates.

Giglio said one of the goals of the club is let voters know the candidates. Voters also need to be aware of the challenges in the community, so they can match up the strengths of a particular candidate to meet a particular challenge.

“If you know someone and what they stand for, you may think twice about just going down the list and voting all Republican,” she said.

As of Sept. 18, there were about 39,000 registered Republicans in Flagler County; there were about 28,000 Democrats and 22,000 with no party affiliation.

Giglio said she got involved with the club after retiring and never would have expected to become president — certainly not after just a year. But, she said, she likes to be active.

“I don’t tend to be a sit-backand-let-it-happen person,” she said. “I tend to speak up, and when you speak up, people say, ‘OK, you can do that job.’”

She said she supports Joe Biden for president because she believes he will bring the country together.

“I feel we are kind of falling apart,” she said. “We need someone to unite us, to say, ‘These are things we can do.’”

When she’s not campaigning, she is working in the garden. She has been known to work in her yard from sun up to sun down when the weather is right.

“When I get involved in something, I have to be all in,” she said. “If it means that much, you should put yourself completely in. Otherwise, why bother?”

FPC beats Matanzas 38-0 in ‘Pandemic’ Potato Bowl FPC continues its crosstown dominance.

hile COVID-19 led to many alterations from the crosstown atmosphere, such as ticket sales, stadium attendance and even school band activities, the pandemic couldn’t stop Flagler Palm Coast from remaining dominant in the Potato Bowl. The Bulldogs shut out Matanzas 38-0 on Friday, Sept. 18, at FPC High School.

The rivalry didn’t take long to get physical; players got into a scuffle on the opening kickoff and remained chippy throughout the game. Both teams also picked up several unsportsmanlike penalties, due to their physical play.

But, when it came to the play between the whistle, FPC dominated both sides of the ball from beginning to end. Running back Chris Parks led the Dawgs, rushing for 165 yards and three touchdowns while Preston Roberts completed nine passes for 150 yards and two scores to David Stubbs and Kent Hill. Former Pirate kicker Julian Del Castillo added a field goal and three extra points.

The Pirates struggled to find their offense, totaling less than 100 yards. Despite getting into the Bulldogs’ red zone three times off turnovers, they were held scoreless on each trip.

Bulldog David Stubbs returned a punt from deep into FPC’s territory to inside the Pirates’ 20 yard line.

“I’m very proud of our team.

We battled for 48 minutes.

We made a lot of mistakes, but I can handle them, when we have the right attitude and effort. And tonight, we didn’t quit, and that’s what makes me the most proud of this team.”

On Matanzas’ last possession in the red zone, Bulldog Corey Van Dyke intercepted the ball near the end zone to take away the Pirates’ last major scoring opportunity.

While being held scoreless in his first game with Matanzas, first-year head coach Matt Forrest left the field confident of his bunch, saying, “I’m very proud of
