Six separate regions in the city are being analyzed for evidence of COVID-19.

By now, most people are familiar with the typical coronavirus test methods — the saliva sample, the swab-up-the-nose routine. But Palm Coast is deploying a less familiar method designed to test for the virus on a broader scale: Analyzing the city’s sewage.

Wastewater-based epidemiology was first used around 2005 to look at drug use in a way that could provide a general sense of how common usage is in a given area without implicating actual individuals, Aquavitas LLC CEO Adam Gushgari said in a Palm Coast Virtual Town Hall event on Aug. 19. Aquavitas is the firm analyzing Palm Coast’s sewage.

Gushgari said he believed sewage analysis could be worldchanging technology.

“I like to say that there’s not a person that you’ll meet that loves sewage more than me,” he said.

“It’s very exciting technology.”

HOW IT WORKS

The idea is simple: Chemical and biological material present in the human body can be analyzed through material excreted from the body — “We call it ‘contributing our sample’ in our field,” Gushgari said — so samples taken from wastewater in various parts of a city can be used to identify hot spots of drug usage or a viral outbreak.

Gushgari gave an example: Sewage from the region around a school was tested for weeks for the presence of ADHD medications. The results showed a big spike during finals week, suggesting that students were using the medications off-label to help cram for their tests. The data helped the school target its messaging.

By 2019, Aquavitas’ scientists had teamed up with Arizona State University to use the technology to test for the seasonal flu.

“This didn’t occur a moment too soon, because within 12 months of initiating this project, the U.S. was hit with the novel coronavirus pandemic,” Gushgari said.

Testing is underway in Palm Coast, and the data is coming back on about a four-day turnaround time that Gushgari hopes SEE WASTEWATER PAGE 7

BACK TO SCHOOL WITH COVID-19

One of the biggest worries for Flagler Palm Coast High School Principal James Russell before the first day of school Aug. 24 was students’ compliance in wearing masks.

“We thought it was going to be push and tug,” he said.

But, on the first day, students did better than he imagined.

“Oh my gosh, yes,” he said.

Russell credited, in part, the messaging. For three weeks, there was a social media campaign to educate families, and there were phone calls. During the school day, there are announcements in between every class period to remind students to wear masks and to walk on the right side of the hallway to promote social distancing. Russell also talked to classes and staff directly.

“Look around the room,” he would say. “Many of the students in here are at risk of COVID, or they have a family member who is.”

Wearing a mask is a way of showing you care about your school community, he suggested.

An email will be sent to everyone in a school whenever there is a positive case in that school, Community Information Specialist Jason Wheeler said.

Superintendent asks for patience and ‘grace’ as school staff accuse district of failing employees.

They sounded like they were describing two different school districts: From behind the dais, Flagler Schools’ leadership opened a School Board meeting Aug. 25 with talk of a “fantastic” first day of school and a hope for a wonderful year.

But on the other side of the dais, or speaking through comments submitted online, district teachers and support staff spoke of inadequate protective equipment and cleaning supplies, classrooms too full to allow social distancing, students who went maskless on campus, and instructors stressed by the demands of teaching in-classroom students simultaneously with remotelearning students who were watching classes over a webcam.

Two subjects of discontent among district staff — the School Board’s refusal to grant staff a requested raise, and the district’s handling of logistical mundanities that had suddenly become important safety matters, like the distribution of soap and hand sanitizer — had converged into a swell of frustration that faced the board at its Aug. 25 meeting as comment after comment referred to the district’s actions as a “slap in the face” and accused the board of failing its employees.

‘THEY DON’T THINK YOU CARE’

The dichotomy between the staff’s and the district administration’s take on the reopening process caught the attention of Jill Woolbright, a Flagler Schools teacher who retired this year and will in November be seated on the

School Board.

“There is a definite problem with morale,” Woolbright said near the end of the meeting, after teachers had complained of cleaning supply shortages and large class sizes. “ ... The people face-to-face every day with the children — the bus drivers, the cafeteria people, the custodians, the teachers, the non-instructs, the bookkeepers — they’re the ones in the trenches, and they don’t think that you really care ... and they really don’t think you hear them.”

She added, “There’s a huge disconnect between what you’re hearing and seeing and what’s in black-and-white policy, and what goes on in the buildings. ...

When I sit and listen to this PPE stuff ... they’re not in the schools.

be seated — urged the district to grant an additional 1% for a raise for support staff, saying it would be a way to show staff that they’re valued as the board asks them to work under the added stress of the pandemic. (The union had asked for 5%, but the board had offered 1%, leading to an impasse.)

An exchange during the first public comment of the meeting outlined some of the tensions between staff and leadership.

Mella Baxter, a teacher, had approached the podium to speak.

Board Chairwoman Janet McDonald suggested that Baxter lower her mask so that she could be heard more clearly. McDonald has drawn some community members’ anger for downplaying the seriousness of COVID-19 and appearing on school campuses outside without a mask on. (The district is not requiring masks on campus when people are more than 6 feet apart.)

“I want to make a request,” McDonald had said to Baxter. “For our recording, it’s very challenging to hear clearly through a mask, so if you — while you’re alone, if you feel comfortable — please, so that we can understand you clearly, please just lower your mask —” “I’m not going to lower my mask,” Baxter interjected. “My whole point with this is protecting my parents, so I’m not going

‘ZOOM PEOPLE’ In one classroom offered for observation to the media on Aug. 25, co-teachers Dana Silvernail and Javier Bevacqua taught students the definition of biology. Every so often, Silvernail would look at her laptop and say, “How we doing, Zoom people?”

She gave her five online-only students two thumbs up, and then she returned her gaze to the rest of the class.

Some teachers are concerned about being in the classroom — 13 are on leave at FPC — but Silvernail said she was glad classes had resumed.

Russell said this class was fortunate in one respect: With two teachers, they have a backup plan if one teacher gets COVID-19 and has to quarantine for two weeks. Not all classes are as fortunate, and all teachers are expected to post their curriculum online to enable a substitute to take over as needed.

“We have to plan to pivot,” Russell said.

THE 6-FOOT CHALLENGE Silvernail and Bevacqua’s classroom was less than ideal for another reason: It was too small to provide 6 feet in between each student. That meant everyone had to wear a mask for the entire class period.

And despite the enrollment dropping to about 1,700 from 2,600 last year, this class is not alone.

“In many classes, we can’t get 6 feet,” Russell said. Outdoor activities are encouraged to give students mask breaks.

Ironically, he said, “The safest place is the classroom. In [the cafeteria], where people eat, they don’t wear a mask.”

Baxter said she was speaking to oppose the district’s decision not to offer remote instruction options for teachers. Baxter is taking leave for the first quarter.

“I would like to say that I’m here tonight to thank you for making my life easier, but I’m not, because you didn’t,” she told the board. “I begged you to give teachers a completely virtual version of teaching, like the students have for learning, to protect our teachers who are immune-compromised, to protect my parents who are immune compromised who I have to take care of. But you didn’t. You failed me. The district failed me. You failed a lot of us.”

DESKS AND SANITIZER

Katie Hansen, a teacher at Indian Trails Middle School and head of the Flagler County Educators Association, said teachers feel “an overwhelming lack of support” from the district.

“Our classes are oversized, with kindergarten classes reaching 24, middle school classes reaching 33, with little-to-no hope of actually distancing desks 4, let alone 6 feet,” Hansen said. “Thank you to teachers for creating an atmosphere that is inviting, despite the overwhelming lack of cleaning supplies that were promised to teachers. ... I got one single bottle of hand sanitizer and one mask.”

Four classes come through Hansen’s room each day using the same desks, she said. The lack of PPE and cleaning materials in classrooms has prompted teachers and supporters to organize a donation drive.

The district reported one COVID-19 case on the first day of school, at Matanzas High School.

‘SHOW US GRACE’

Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt appealed to staff members and community members to give the district a chance to work things out and balance out class sizes over the next 10 days.

“It is just day two,” she said.

“I ask for patience. Every school year, the first 10 days of school is a balancing act for all of us. ... And this year COVID-19 has a different routine, but we are standing up to that challenge and moving forward.”

Board member Colleen Conklin said it’s important to acknowledge staff members’ frustrations and address their concerns.

“In education right now, we have so many individuals who have spent a lifetime giving of themselves to education and to students, who have had to step away,” Conklin said. “And there’s just something heartbreaking about that. That’s not the way you want someone to go out in their career. So I just want them to know, from the bottom of my heart, how much I appreciate their service and their dedication.”

The district is looking into the complaints about a lack of PPE and cleaning supplies, she said.

She noted that kids will pick up on adults’ energy at school — a good reason to be “as positive as possible, while not putting our heads in the sand,” she said.

“Give leadership some time and an opportunity to address those things,” she said. “It’s going to be an interesting school year, but it can be a great school year. ... So while folks are frustrated, please know that it’s not for a lack of trying, and people are working tirelessly behind the scenes.

We’re dealing with a situation we’ve never dealt with before.

So: compassion and grace, and let’s have a great school year.”

Palm Coast city staff is pressing the Florida Department of Transportation to add a traffic signal at the off ramp at the Matanzas Woods Parkway/Interstate 95 interchange.

FDOT has made some improvements to the interchange, but not as many as city leaders would like.

“I still find that incredibly dangerous, and I’m not sure what it’s going to take for them to put a light over there,” Mayor Milissa Holland said at an Aug. 25 City Council workshop. “It’s really heavily traveled, too. ... I just would hate to see something happen in that intersection.”

“We’ll continue to push to get them to evaluate it and justify the need for a signal,” said Carl Cote, Stormwater and Engineering director.

CITY DESIGNS BUDGET AROUND UNCERTAINTIES The still-undetermined extent of COVID-19’s impact on state revenue is adding a new measure of uncertainty for Palm Coast city staff members tasked with developing a city budget that relies in part on money from state funds.

At this point, the city of Palm Coast is planning to adopt a millage rate of 4.6989 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, which is the same as last year’s rate but is expected to bring in about an additional $1.7 million in revenue due to rising property values, for a total of $26.3 million.

Meanwhile, the city is trying to cut expenses, eliminating staff raises and scaling back its fleet replacement schedule, among other measures.

City Manager Matt Morton told City Council members during that there are still “many unknowns” about the financial impact of COVID-19.

He found it likely that the state Legislature will hold a special session to adjust the state budget.

“We do have contingencies built into this budget to hopefully handle the fluctuations,” Morton said.

So far, city staff told council members, half-cent sales tax money distributed to the city from the state has been 21% lower than the previous year, pushing the city to be conservative in its plans.

Holland noted that evictions and foreclosures are just starting, and it’s not clear to what extent they’ll impact the wider economy.

Councilman Jon Netts noted that he’d been on the council during that 2008 recession.

“This is like deja vu all over again,” he said. Now, as then, staff is doing a good job, he said. “It may get better, it may get worse, but I’m confident that we’ll handle it,” Netts said.

FLORIDA PARK DRIVE WORK PLANNED A program to discourage speeding and reduce traffic noise on Florida Park Drive will begin this coming fiscal year.

The city government, spurred to action by complaints from residents, is designing a program that would help residents on the street install landscaping specifically designed to serve as a noise barrier.

The next time the street is resurfaced, the city will also use a restriping pattern designed to make the road’s lanes appear narrower, which has been shown to reduce speeding.

Carl Cote, the city’s Stormwater and Engineering director, said the grant-funded landscaping barrier program will be first-come, first-served for residents: It won’t be linear, and there will likely be gaps in the project length.

The landscaping itself will come from a set of templates designed by a landscape architect, who would then help tailor those options for individual homes in coordination with the residents.

“I’d be interested to see what sort of buy-in the residents have demonstrated,” Mayor Mlissa Holland said. “...

I just think we want to be very thoughtful on this approach, and not haphazard.”

Army Corps pledges to work ‘Profound loss’ with county on dunes project Flagler Beach City Manager Larry Newsom died Aug. 23.

Flagler County officials had a successful meeting with the Army Corps of Engineers on Wednesday, Aug. 19, that resulted in a pledge to complete the dunes project even if it means eliminating a half-block section just north of the South 28th Street boundary.

“The Army Corps of Engineers is definitely going to work with us to move this project forward,” said County Administrator Jerry Cameron. “They are working on an option that – quite frankly – is requiring them to jump through hoops, but they are doing it.”

Currently, the project consists of the 2.6 miles from the north side of South Sixth Street to the south side of South 28th Street.

Flagler County has successfully secured more than $17 million in state and federal funding for the beach restoration for this stretch.

Flagler County has been working diligently to secure access easements of 141 affected parcels.

As of Aug. 26, 11 owners responsible for 13 of those parcels had yet to agree to grant access for the project to move forward.

“We have reached a point where these holdouts are preventing us from protecting miles of our

beach, our roadway, our businesses, and our residents,” Cameron said. “This is about public safety, so we have to take some last resort measures.”

Property owners that have provided access easements have not relinquished any rights to use and enjoy their parcels, to have walkovers or decks subject to normal permitting requirements, to prohibit the public from traversing their dunes to access the beach, or to sell it to another.

They have only granted permission for the work to be done on their dunes, including allowing agencies to replenish and maintain the dunes with sand and native vegetation.

Flagler Beach City Manager Larry Newsom, whose leadership helped the city navigate three hurricanes since 2016, died on Aug. 23, at AdventHealth in Palm Coast. The cause of death was not announced.

“This is a profound loss for our family here in Flagler Beach,” said Jane Mealy, chairperson of the Flagler Beach City Commission, in the press release. “Our saddened hearts are with Lisa during this most trying of times and our community will miss Larry’s dedication to our city.

Newson was hired in January 2016. He was an interim county manager for Escambia County three times between 2010 and 2014, according to northescambia.com.

“As a city we’ll move forward in the fashion and manner that would make Larry proud of what we can accomplish as a small city,” Mealy said. “Larry made a huge impact on our city over a short period of time, and he’ll be sorely missed by our city and our community.”

City Commissioner Eric Cooley described Newsom as personable, welcoming and positive.

Cooley was volunteering with cleanup efforts after Hurricane Matthew when he got to know Newsom.

“This town would not have been able to get through that without

his help,” he said. “He came to us at just the right time. He was everything this town needed.”

The way he taught the staff to respond to future disasters is just as significant, Cooley said, because they’ll be trained even in Newsom’s absence.

“We always used to joke, calling him Hurricane Larry, because disasters seemed to follow him wherever he’s lived in Florida.”

Personally, Cooley said Newsom related to everyone who approached him.

“He was a joy to be around,” Cooley said. “He’s got that witty Southern charm where he’s aways cracking a joke, making somebody laugh. He really brought a nice dynamic to the job. ... A lot of city managers are rigid and process-driven, and Larry brought a nice human aspect to the job.”

Newsom and his dog frequently stopped by Cooley’s 7-Eleven store, and Cooley said he’ll miss their talks.

“There’s an emptiness because you’re expecting him to come by, and you know he won’t,” Cooley said. “He always brought a cheer to the day, everywhere he went.”

Further information will be released later this week with regard to services for Newsom, as well as the next step in the city’s leadership.

“Larry made a huge impact on our city over a short period of time, and he’ll be sorely missed by our city and our community.”

Flagler County at an Aug. 17 County Commission meeting recognized the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which occurred Aug. 26 1920, granting women the right to vote.

A contingent from the American Association of University Women were present for the reading of a proclamation during the board meeting. The proclamation laid out some of the history: The suffragist movement began in Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848; the Susan B. Anthony Amendment was approved by the Senate on June 4, 1920; and the amendment was sent to individual states for ratification by a three-fourths majority, which it earned on Aug. 18, 1920 with the vote of approval of the state of Tennessee. “As we ll know the 19th Amendment did not guarantee the right to vote for all women,” Medley said. “So, there’s much more work to be done for women and equality, but we’re happy to be here today to receive this proclamation.”

Roundabout opens at US 1 and Matanzas Woods Parkway

The final piece of the roundabout at U.S. 1 and Matanzas Woods Parkway opened to traffic on Aug. 24.

Construction of the $2.6 million roundabout began Oct. 23, 2019, requiring the intersection to fully close to traffic and necessitating seven months of detours onto Belle Terre Parkway and Old Kings Road before the roundabout had a partial reopening, for right turns only, on May 11.

As of Aug. 24, the roundabout is open to traffic from both directions, and only a few minor items remain until it is completed, according to a news release from the Florida Department of Transportation.

Palmetto berries on Flagler County land might be tempting to pick, but county ordinance forbids it.

“It’s palmetto berry season, which means it is the time of year when we see people on the side of roadways and in our parks to pick the berries,” said Flagler County Environmental Projects Supervisor Mike Lagasse. “While some private property owners allow the harvesting of the berries with permission, picking palmetto berries is not allowed on Flagler County owned or managed preserves and parks.”

Shooting at vehicle audio business Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating a shooting that injured a man Aug. 22 at a vehicle audio business. Witnesses have given conflicting reports about whether the victim, a felon, brandished a firearm during an argument before he was shot — potentially making the case a stand-yourground law shooting.

FCSO deputies responded to 15 Hargrove Lane Building 5E at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 22 to reports of a shooting.

A caller reported that a male fired several rounds within a garage, injuring another male. All parties were still on scene.

The shooter, identified as 32-year-old Alan Presley Jr., was cooperative with deputies and the investigation.

The initial investigation revealed that the two parties involved had an argument prior to the shooting, but there were conflicting reports as to whether the 25-year-old victim had brandished a firearm.

No arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

FLORIDA UNEMPLOYMENT INCREASES 1 POINT TO 11.3% Florida’s unemployment rate increased to 11.3% in July, with the jobless ranks growing by 122,000 people, as the state continued trying to revitalize the economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The rate was up from an adjusted 10.3% unemployment mark for June and reflected 1.125 million jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 9.975 million people, according to the state Department of Economic Opportunity.

The numbers, which represent an estimate of the workforce in mid-July, showed declines in construction and manufacturing. But the numbers also indicated workers returning, or trying to return, in most other categories.

While the number of jobless people grew, the overall workforce total was up 223,000, a sign people are interested in working, Adrienne Johnston, chief of the department’s Bureau of Workforce Statistics and Economic Research, said.

“While unemployment increased, we saw employment increase at the same time,” Johnston said. “So, that shows you that while employment increased on the household side to meet those business needs, we may have had people coming back into the labor force and not immediately have a job. That could be why unemployment also increased.”

Strike a pose

Shelter dogs dress up in hats, glasses and wigs to find new homes.

loe, a pointer mix, glanced daintily off to the side, elegant and grandmotherly in her purple floral scarf, white pocketbook and flower-covered straw hat. Meatball, a terrier mix, was dapper in a pair of goldframe spectacles and a charcoal flat hat with matching tie, while terrier mix Karma grinned in a pair of bold sunglasses and a hot red and gold purse with a chunky gold necklace.

There’s that saying about old dogs and new tricks.

Yet eight “senior” dogs at the Flagler Humane Society this month learned to strike a pose for photo shoots in vintage hats, glasses and wigs that would’ve been in vogue a few generations ago. The shelter hopes the colorful photos will help these older dogs find new homes.

Two of the eight — Karma, and Uce, a mastiff who’d posed in a polo shirt and a pin-stripe fedora combination — have already been adopted since

the photos were shared on the shelter’s Facebook page.

FHS trainer Lauren Driscoll came up with the idea of using props from the Flagler Humane Society’s thrift shop. Animal Placement Manager Kyndra Mott helped dress and accessorize the dogs, while Adoption Specialist Magdalena Grzona took the photos.

Each photo shoot lasted about 20 to 30 minutes.

“Some of the dogs b e h a ve d p e r fe c t l y well, waited for their treat and kind of even were posing, like Kale, the brindle,” Mott said, referring to a terrier mix who’d worn a heather gray sweater and fedora. “So was Karma, with her flashy necklace and purse and the sunglasses.

“And then there are others, like Meatball — he was basically rolling around the whole time trying to get it off,” Mott said, laughing.

“But we did get some good shots once we found some treats he really likes.”

Another pooch, Bambi, was “not a fan of the wig,” Mott said of an American Staffordshire mix who’d worn a brunette wig, blue scarf and pocketbook.

“She’s got a lot of energy for her age, so we knew that one was going to be a little bit more difficult,” Mott said.

But the dogs — being dogs — mostly wanted to please, and did as asked.

The shelter also tried a backto-school themed set of photo shoots with cats.

That was trickier.

“We didn’t do nearly as many, because a lot of them weren’t cooperating,” Mott said.

The clothes and glasses were out. These cats weren’t runwayready.

Still, some did condescend to sit still in front of posed stacks of school books and classroom supplies long enough for a photo to be snapped.

The FHS’s photo shoot effort is part of the national Clear The Shelters adoption drive organized

by NBC and supported by Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Each year since 2015, participating shelters across the country have held special campaigns and offered reduced adoption fees.

Lowering occupancy in the shelters is especially important this year, FHS Executive Director Amy Carotenuto said: COVID-19 brings the possibility that a local breeder or pet owner with many animals might be hospitalized, and the shelter find itself with a sudden influx of dogs or cats that need care — hopefully temporarily, until the owner recovers.

“The more we have room in the shelter for things like that, the safer we are,” she said. There’s also the risk of staff members being out sick, and fewer people being available to care for the pets.

Concerned about COVID’s impact, the shelter in March sent out an e-blast to supporters and was able to reduce occupancy to less that 20 dogs and about 20 cats, when it would ordinarily have about 100 dogs and 180-200 cats.

But those numbers have started creeping back up.

For this year’s Clear the Shelter campaign, FHS staff decided to focus first on the senior dogs.

“They have the hardest time getting adopted and the hardest time during their stay here,” Mott said.

Meanwhile, there are benefits to adopting an older dog, Mott pointed out: Their personalities are more established, and they’re more likely to be house-trained and to know how to live in a house.

Many are still energetic enough to chase a ball or enjoy a long walk.

And — clearly — they can be admirably patient.

“I couldn’t believe how good the dogs were to wear glasses and stuff,” Carotenuto said. “I looked at it and was like, ‘Is it photoshopped?’ But it wasn’t photoshopped.” She added, “The reaction has been awesome: We’ve had more shares on those pictures than we’ve ever had.”

The Clear the Shelters campaign continues through the end of August.

4. “Bad day do-over card.” My first year of homeschooling was harder to navigate than I expected. Bad mood days. Days that went sideways. And days when we all felt “meh” about mathematics. Certainly 2020 has had so many unexpected aspects. One amazing gift is time with our families. (Maybe too much time some days?) One of the best outcomes of homeschooling has been my relationship with my kids.

Getting to see who they are growing to be and the big world questions they ask will remain my favorite thing about this time in our lives. I hope you get a taste of that.

Jackson became paralyzed about a year ago, due to ALS, and Sheriff Mike Chitwood visited him to encourage him.

In the meantime, Jackson is trying to help people whenever he can. He serves in several ministries at Mount Calvary Baptist Church and now is involved in giving away backpacks. He got his supply from his son, Mike Jackson, who founded Women of Virtue Foundation in Daytona Beach and recently gave away 700 backpacks there.

Mike Jackson was diagnosed in 2011 with pancreatic cancer and believes he was miraculously cured. Ever since then, he has given away bicycles, Thanksgiving meals and backpacks to the community. He was happy when his father asked to help give away backpacks in Palm Coast.

“It meant a lot to me — everything my dad has been through — to see that he’s not giving up,” Mike Jackson said. “When I go see him, I see a guy that’s laughing and smiling and enjoying life. It’s a beautiful thing.”

He added, “My dad has always been my Superman.”

have made some of the meanest people laugh,” Henry Jackson says.

The 84-year-old Palm Coast resident says that while he was a police officer in Miami, he met Al Capone and Scarface and practiced his good humor on them.

On Saturday, Aug. 29, he hopes to make children laugh, as he plans to give away 70 backpacks — supplied by his son’s foundation.

Sitting in his wheelchair, Jackson will be in his driveway from 10 a.m. to about noon, at 237 Boulder Rock Drive. First come, first served, he said.

“When I get tired, I’ll stop and give away the rest later,” he said.

Jackson, who retired as a lieutenant after 13 years with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, spent a total of 33 years in uniform. He also was a private investigator.

“Oh, man, I could write a book about how law enforcement has changed,” he said. When a suspect would try to run away, he said, the officers used to be trained to throw their billy clubs to trip the suspect. And to get a call to a scene, the officer would be notified on a beeper, and he would have to find a pay phone to receive the rest of the message.

He retired in Daytona Beach in 1987. When his wife of 53 years died in 2009, he decided he needed a change, so he moved to Palm Coast. He said it’s much quieter here. “I don’t hear no sirens,” he said.

Kennedy writes a book

Kennedy, age 5, decided to write a book the other day. I helped her staple together some printer paper for the pages and a file folder for the cover, and she was thrilled. A real book!

The only problem was what to write.

“How about a book about an animal?” I suggested. She rejected dog, cat, squirrel, but she settled on a dinosaur.

For the first page, she began by asking me how to spell the words, “There once.”

I gave her one letter at a time, and that was enough for the first day.

Day two produced another three words: “Was a dinosaur.”

I figured she would forget all about it.

Soon we became busy working on a family project, repainting our kitchen cabinets. My job was to take the finish off the wood panels using an electric sander in the garage; my wife, Hailey, led the painting project in the kitchen with the older kids.

All sweaty and dusty, I opened the door from the garage to the house, and there was Kennedy.

She was waiting patiently, sitting in a little wooden chair, her book on her lap and her pencil in her hand.

“You give it to me, and I’ll take it to Mom,” she said, putting the book and pencil down.

So I handed her the panel, and she marched off.

A few minutes later, I finished another panel, and there she was again with her pencil, using her spare moments to fill more pages in her book.

A few days later, I was in my room, working on a story for the newspaper, and she wandered in and sat on my bed with her book.

She peppered me with questions: “How do you spell ‘fruit snacks’?”

“How do you spell ‘snow’?”

“How do you make it sound like someone is shouting?”

She also illustrated the book, with a family building a snowman and then watching it melt.

“What happened to the dinosaurs?” I asked.

She looked puzzled.

“It’s called ‘The Book about a Dinosaur,’ but there aren’t any dinosaurs at the end,” I said.

I pointed to the picture of the family with the snowman.

“Dad, those are dinosaurs!”

“Oh,” I said. “Got it.”

When it was finished, she beamed with pride and raced to show Mom. That night, Kennedy fell asleep knowing she had finished her first book, which sat in its rightful place: on the bookshelf.

Mary Geiger experienced The Great Depression. She has been a care giver, secretary and administrative assistant for nursing services. On Saturday, Aug. 22, the staff at The Windsor of Palm Coast helped her to celebrate her 100th birthday, with a parade.

When Geiger retired, she worked to sell homes. She learned tai chi, created art and worked on her garden. Before she moved to The Windsor, she lived on the beach for 15 years.

Geiger attributes her long life and continued health to her philosophy to stay active, connect with people, eat healthy foods and maintain a strong spiritual life.

family were determined to make her big 100 a special day.

All throughout the parade, Geiger could hardly stay in her seat.

She loved how law enforcement officers started off the parade by playing “Happy Birthday” through their speakers. Her family and friends came after, shouting out their windows how much they love their Nana, and to wish her a happy birthday.

At the end of Geiger’s parade, she said to The Windsor’s Brenda Patton, “This is a birthday I’ll never forget.”
