Flagler Schools preps for students’ arrival Aug. 24 The state of Florida is requiring school districts to reopen for in-person instruction.

Students in Flagler County will return to school Aug. 24, and the district does not have a threshold for a case rate that would lead to a school closure.

Board member Colleen Conklin had pressed fellow school board members during a meeting to address that question — one raised often by critics of the district’s reopening plan — but as of Tuesday, Aug. 18, the School Board and district administration had not done so.

The state is requiring districts to open for in-person instruction, and Gov. Ron DeSantis in an Aug. 14 press conference said that districts should be “surgical” in any decisions to close schools due to COVID-19 cases.

“My personal feeling is that we do need to make a decision, whether it’s developing a policy around positivity rates and pediatric rates and what type of response the district will be taking,” Conklin said in an interview.

She acknowledged that any threshold would have its critics.

“The best you can do is try to acknowledge and understand right now the concerns and fears that they have, and then do everything that we can to put those to rest,” she said. “But no matter what we do, it’s almost — there will be someone upset.”

For now, she said. “As we return to school,it’s obviously very different than it’s been in the past.

But hopefully parents, students and staff know we are trying our best to make sure that everyone is learning and working in a safe environment, and I continue to look forward to having conversations with our School Board members about tracking

the COVID data and how best to appropriately respond.”

Teachers and staff returned to school in Flagler County on Aug. 10.

As of Aug. 12, a total of 10 district staff members had tested positive for COVID-19 since March. As of Aug. 19, that number was 15.

The district has declined to give specific information on where COVID-19 cases have occurred at district facilities, citing educational and medical privacy laws.

Although students have the option to watch cases remotely through a webcam from home or to instead take iFlagler online classes, teachers and staff are expected to work on campus.

Schools are adding hand sanitizer stations, making some entrances one-way, and moving some students to outdoor seating during lunch, among other COVID safety measures.

Christine Patterson, head of Flagler For a Safe Return, said teachers have been talking among themselves their concerns, but feel that they can’t speak up publicly for fear of being fired.

Although children are less likely to have severe symptoms from COVID-19 than are adults, they do catch it: As of Aug. 17, according to data provided by the state, 23,211 cases, 4% of the state’s total, have been in children between the ages of 5 and 14. An additional 85,815, or 15%, have been in people between the ages of 15 and 24.

Three children between 5 and 14 have died in Florida from COVID-19, and 196 have been hospitalized.

In Flagler County, 4% of positive COVID-19 tests have been for children ages 5 to 14.

The results are in Woolbright, Massaro and Conklin win School Board races, Palm Coast mayoral race heads to runoff

ith a l l p re c i n c ts reporting the evening of Aug. 18, School Board candidates Jill Woolbright, Colleen Conklin and Cheryl Massaro won their School Board races, incumbent District 5 County Commissioner Donald O’Brien won the Republican primary, and District 3 County Commissioner David Sullivan beat challenger Kim Carney to win the race. The Palm Coast mayoral race will head to a runoff.

Palm Coast Mayor Milissa Holland led her challengers with 31.78% of the vote in the five-way race, trailed by Alan Lowe, who had 26.50%.

They will face each other again in November: In races with more than two candidates, a candidate will win if they garner more than 50% of the vote (50% plus one vote). Otherwise, the top two vote-winners will proceed to the general election.

In the District 1 Palm Coast City Council race, Ed Danko and Sims Jones will head to the general

election. In District 3, incumbent Nick Klufas and Cornelia Manfre proceed to the general election.

Conklin, the county’s longestserving elected official thanked county voters.

“I’m just very humbled to be able to continue for our students teachers and staff and families,” she said.

On the changing composition of the board, she added, “I’ve been through some major board changes in the past, and it can be challenging at times. But as long as everyone remains focused on students and what’s best for the district, I’m certain all will be well. Dr. Barbosa has been a colleague and friend on the board, and of course I only wish her well.”

Woolbright said she gets energized just talking about children and education.

“I think this is my life’s calling,” she said in an interview on Flagler Broadcasting. “Children in Flagler County have been my life since 1989, since I was going to school here. ... I’ve always been an advocate for children.”

The Aug. 18 election saw a turnout of 30.44%, and — as expected due to COVID-19 — unprecedented use of mailin ballots, which were by far the largest share of ballots cast.

In Flagler County, 60.85% of ballots cast were mail-in ballots, while 20.51% of ballots were cast during early voting and the remaining 18.64% were cast on Election Day. Of the total ballots cast, 47.72% were Republican, 39.88% were Democratic Party ballots and 11.87% were noparty-affiliation.

What’s the best way for the city government to communicate with its residents? When the city posts notices on Facebook and gets a lot of “engagement,” are citizens actually engaging in a useful way with the material?

How can the city best reach residents who aren’t techsavvy?

Palm Coast is working on a communications strategy to address such issues, Communications Officer Tyler Jarnagin told City Council members in an Aug. 18 council meeting.

“We’re using every single tool at our disposal,” Jarnagin said.

That includes Zoom and Virtual Town Hall livestreams, plus email, radio and traditional news releases, he said.

The city’s IT staff is adding information about each department to the city’s Palm Coast Connect website, “so that we have that single source for this information so that the public can find it easily,” Jarnagin said.

Mayor Milissa Holland asked if residents have

been surveyed to determine how they prefer to receive information. Jarnagin said the city is working on that now.

Councilman Jon Netts noted that some of the city’s population might not be comfortable with computer technology.

“So much of this is technologically based, and we have a senior population that may or may not be technologically aware,” he said. “Palm Coast Connect, for example. Do our residents know what is available? Do they know what they can do with it? ... I still think we need to educate the public on how to use what we’re making.”

Holland suggested hosting a “Palm Coast Connect Academy” online, similar to the city’s Virtual Town Hall events.

Councilman Bob Cuff suggested the city develop a facility for one-on-one instruction or a Q-and-A for people who want to use the technology but aren’t familiar with it.

Palm Coast is hiring a contractor to improve drainage at three crossings on Blare Drive and Colbert Lane to redirecting stormwater and protect the residential areas upstream.

Two of the crossings consist of four culverts on Colbert Lane, while the other crossing involves three culverts on Blare Drive Areas of the Woodlands and the Wild Oaks area contain many homes at risk for flooding in the event of a 10-year storm, and structural, street and yard flooding have already been documented in those areas, according to a city staff document.

Holdouts to be offered neighbors’ cash to comply New Palm Coast chamber: less CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

county government for compensation, but the county has refused.

As of the afternoon of Aug. 14, the online fundraiser, titled “Help Save Flagler Beach,” had exceeded its $40,000 goal, totaling $41,191 from 327 donors since it was set up the night of Aug. 12.

“These monies will be compensating very misinformed property owners who have selfishly chosen to not sign easements, putting our entire town at risk,” the text of the fundraiser states. “We have exhausted all efforts to change their minds and this is our last attempt to secure the funding, as we only have a few more days until the grant expires.”

BREACH POINTS

The project would involve the Army Corps of Engineers adding sand along the beach, widening it so that future storms are less likely to punch through the dune and damage A1A and inundate the land, homes and businesses west of it. The project is in part a reaction to the damage caused by Hurricane Matthew.

But gaps in the project would create “breach points” that undermine the project’s integrity, so the Army Corps will not proceed unless they received signed easements from all of the property owners along the 2.6-mile stretch of beach.

As of Aug. 14, 11 property owners have not signed, and eight of those are represented by attorney John LeReux, according to County Attorney Al Hadeed. (One other property owner is in the process of signing documents, according to Hadeed.)

LeReux has pressed the county to pay the property owners as if the case is an imminent domain case. The county has repeatedly said that it is not: The property owners aren’t losing rights to their land, which would actually be enlarged and protected, and thus gain value, from the project, according to Hadeed.

The county faces an Army Corps deadline of Aug. 19 to get all of the 141 easements signed, or the Army Corps will cancel the project.

Hadeed has led the county’s side of the effort to collect signed easements. But the county government had nothing to do with the fundraising effort, he said.

“This was totally done by citizens on their own,” Hadeed said.

Without the project, he said, Flagler Beach is “incredibly vulnerable.”

“The length of our beach is so short, when storm waves come crashing there’s nothing to slow them down; there’s nothing to dissipate their energy,” he said.

“The next storm is just going to be able to have a straightaway shot at slamming into the edge of A1A. Thus, the dune restoration project is critical because that support system that would be constructed and installed is what is going to blunt the force of storm waves — it’s going to dissipate that — and that could very well save our community from a catastrophic loss.”

Hadeed said the county will emphasize the community’s grassroots effort in conversations with the Army Corps.

“It shows very strong community spirit. That can only help us,” he said.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT

The grassroots fundraising effort was organized on www.gofundme.com by Carla Cline, the owner of Flagler Surf Art and Stuff and the website www.flaglersurf.com, which features a live webcam stream of the beach and has brought Cline an audience.

Cline said the idea came about in conversation with Craig Atack, a local attorney.

“He said, ‘Why don’t we just do a fundraiser and pay these people?’ And at first I was not for

it, because the last thing I wanted to do was reward people for bad behavior,” Cline said. “Then I thought: As a last option, it could possibly work.”

She asked around to see if people who’d already signed easements would be upset if the holdouts were paid to do so when they themselves had not been.

“The consensus was no, because mostly everybody supports [the project],” she said. So she contacted local attorney Dennis Bayer about how much to raise and how to proceed, and settled on $4,000 per holdout, she said.

The holdouts had pushed the county for more than that, but Cline found that unpalatable.

“We’re not buying their land; they’d still get to keep it,” she said. “We’re just giving them money. ... It’s 10 holdouts, $4,000 per person.”

Large donations include $5,000 from Oceanside Grille co-owner John Lulgjuraj; $1,000 from Beach Front Grille owner Jamie Bourdeau, $1,000 from Stocker Flagler Holdings I LLC, $800 from wakeboarder and wakeboarding coach Tarah Mikacich, plus numerous $500 donations from area residents and businesses. There have also been many donations of less than $100.

Bayer, Cline said, would be contacting the holdouts’ attorney to let them know about the money raised.

“At this point, it’s basically like: ‘We raised $40,000, however this works for you; tell your clients there’s some money available,’” she said. “Hopefully they take it, because if the deadline comes and the grant goes away, they get nothing. So here, they get some cash in their pocket, they get the property improved.”

She added, “All these people that donated — if they don’t accept, they’re going to be so frustrated.

The money, according to the text on the fundraiser page, will be transferred to an escrow account set up by Bayer, who would then pay it out to the recipients.

“If the mission is not achieved, all donations will be returned, minus service fees,” the text of the fundraiser states.

Less than three months after the Flagler County Chamber dissolved due to financial struggles amplified by the pandemic, the Palm Coast Regional Chamber of Commerce has been created and has its first leader: CEO/President Greg Blose, formerly of the state chamber.

With massive job losses brought on by COVID-19, combined with the threat of hurricanes, now is the time to start a new chamber, said Blose (pronounced blahSAY).

“We cannot have the business community unrepresented at this time,” he said in an Aug. 17 phone interview with the Palm Coast Observer. “It’s just not acceptable.”

The new chamber will have a new focus and will operate on a staff of just one — Blose himself — likely for the first 12 months.

“You’ll see our chamber focus on a lot of governmental relations issues,” he said. “This is less about ribbon cuttings and more about major policy issues, and more about how do we take the community to the next level.”

Blose, a former resident of Flagler County, was most recently the director of the Board of Governors for the Florida Chamber of Commerce, in Tallahassee; he also served as the state chamber’s disaster preparedness and recovery project manager. He is a former executive officer of the Volusia Home Builders Association and was appointed in 2018 by then-Gov. Rick Scott to the Florida State Emergency Response Commission.

“Businesses today face so many new challenges,” he said, mentioning COVID-19 and hurricane season. “The opportunity of having Mr. Greg Blose come lead us to face those mounting challenges, from his experience at the state level, accelerated our decision to bring it to life today.”

Walsh hopes the business community embraces the chamber’s new emphasis on government affairs and lifting the entire community.

“We’re changing our focus,” he said. “Successful chambers today don’t focus on what’s in it for me as an individual business but focus on what’s in it for we, the entire business community.”

FOCUSED ON THE FUTURE While at the state chamber, Greg Blose focused on the long term — 2030 and beyond — rather than only the short term. He hopes to bring that focus to Palm Coast as well.

By 2030, the state chamber projected, Flagler County will grow by 30,000 to 40,000 residents. That means 5,000 new jobs need to be created.

“That’s without the loss,” he

said, referring to more than 4,500 jobs that have been lost in the Greg Blose past year, mainly due to the pandemic.

“There’s quite a bit of work to be done. That’s the No. 1 reason we’re moving so fast.”

McDonald and her retweets need to go Dear Editor: In this climate of hate and divisiveness based upon politics and racism, and, with the added devastation of the COVID 19 pandemic, there is no place for a School Board chairwoman such as Janet McDonald.

Ms. McDonald tweets and retweets false and explosive information on the coronavirus, stating it’s an intentional disease designed to destroy the presidency of Donald Trump. She retweets articles scorching the Black Lives Matter movement, the LGBTQ community, the media, liberals, the COVID 19 pandemic, vaccine science and others.

I am a retired elementary and middle school principal. I spent 49 years as an educator.

After retirement, I moved from Ohio to Texas, where I taught in the school systems of Dallas and Austin. After moving here, I taught three years at Flagler Palm Coast High School.

FPC stands out as one of the best experiences I had as an educator. Why? Because I taught an international group of students of all races, colors and backgrounds. I considered them all my children! Some of my 11th and 12th grade students stated they were gay. It did not matter to me. I looked at my students through the eyes of love, the way we should view everyone!

As a school principal, I stressed to my teachers to treat all children, all parents, all custodians and other school employees with dignity and respect.

We hear every day of elected officials losing their jobs because of the hate-filled and bigoted statements they made. When we gain the public’s trust and are elected

Mayor Milissa Holland has done nothing for the people living on the canals. When Levitt built this, he stated the canal depth would be held at 7 feet deep at mean low water.

The City Council raises the water bill, runoff water bill, taxes and spends it on pet projects, like Holland Park.

Wading pools for kids at $2 million after being told they would turn into public urinals by other cities that tried it.

There are areas that don’t drain during and after a rain storm. Nothing is done.

When the heat makes the water meter’s plastic housing brittle and they break, the city tries to make the homeowner pay for it. Hence the rewording. The meters belong to the city. We pay rent on them.

Now the new meter contains both meters not two separate meters. Should be only one charge not two.

I have had all the candidates out and showed them the problems with the stormwater and the canals. They all had ideas how to fix it. She and her manager would not answer my request to come out. Deaf ears.

She knows. Do nothing mode.

Costs money. But we have money for pet projects. It’s time she and the city manager go. Find other employment opportunities elsewhere.

Data is misleading if not made clearer Dear Editor: My concern is that citizens may be lulled into a false sense of security by the Palm Coast Observer’s portrayal of twoweek-old reports of monthold conditions as showing current Covid-19 conditions in Flagler.

The neighborhood talk is that the coronavirus spread is improving in Flagler County.

While it may not be possible to get current conditions, the reporting would serve the public far better if it did not portray it as current and should clearly identify the age of the data.

First, the Observer’s COVID-19 Report online for Aug. 7 mistakenly states that positivity rates are higher than a month ago but ER visits are trending downward, indicating that the report shows data for right now. The article continues on to show supporting charts that clearly show the caveat that the data had not been updated for almost two

weeks.

Second, in the e-edition under the headline that “Flagler County passed 1,000 cases,” the health officer was quoted as saying, “The positivity rate for the past 14 days is 6.2%, which is an improvement over the 7.1% of the previous two weeks.”

Later in the article he said that test turnaround is two weeks.

This appears to mean that test results ending July 24 are being cited for an improvement now when compared to test data from July 10.

This also means we passed 1,000 cases on July 24. Since it takes two weeks for the test to turn around, the articles are discussing trends reported two weeks ago for conditions that occurred a month ago. Since the spread is almost exponential without proper precautions, what does it mean for now?

Numerous experts report that two-week old test results are just about useless in stopping the spread. Also, public testing stopped in the state for four days and people were busy with Hurricane Isaias preparations. With test results so delayed, the safest route is to assume the current infection rate is two or three times higher, that you have it and can silently spread it. I hope I am wrong.

Community tips help deputies recover wallet Tips from community members helped deputies recover a stolen wallet and catch a fugitive Aug. 12.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office posted an “attempt to identify” notice on social media on Thursday, Aug. 6, regarding a wallet stolen from the Palm Coast Walmart on Aug. 4.

Within hours, FCSO received dozens of tips identifying the subject as 33-year-old Ivy Bentz. Deputies also determined that another woman, 55-year-old Lisa Caldwell, was involved with the case.

Deputies have arrested both women and recovered the stolen wallet. Gold hair pins that had been inside the wallet, and which were an important heirloom item for the victim, have still not been recovered.

“We appreciate our community engaging with us online and helping us to identify the suspect in this case,” Sheriff Rick Staly said.

Three arrested after traffic stop escalates A traffic stop for a non-functioning tag light spiraled into a series of crimes and three arrests on Aug. 12.

After deputies stopped a Nissan Altima, the two people in the car left it on the side of the road and ran into the woods, and the driver called his mother — the car’s owner — to tell her he was running

from police in her car and had ditched it. The mother then falsely reported the car as stolen.

“It wasn’t enough to flee from a minor traffic violation, so they decided to make it a family affair by mom reporting her car stolen even though she knew her son had it,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “This was a night full of poor decisions, but I hope they are able to get back on the right track and get their lives back in order.

We want to thank the Volusia Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with the search.”

The driver was identified as 24-year-old Markee Webb.

His passenger was 29-year-old Keydra Lyons. Webb’s mother is 47-year-old Contina Smith.

Webb and Smith are Interlachen residents, while Lyons is a Gainesville resident.

All three were booked at the county jail and have been released on bond.

COVID-19’s financial impacts have affected many local government bodies that rely money from fees — including the Clerk of Courts office, which has laid off staff members to cope with decreased revenue.

Flagler County commissioners agreed during an Aug. 17 meeting to have the county government provide the Clerk of Courts office with a $250,000 emergency appropriation to avoid further layoffs.

The Clerk of Courts budget is divided in two parts — court and non-court, Clerk of Court Tom Bexley told commissioners during the meeting.

The non-court side, which funds duties such as processing county payroll and serving as custodian for county records, is funded by county government and hasn’t been much affected

by COVID-19. But the court side, which relies on user fees, is taking a hit because so many court proceedings have been suspended.

“We have seen court activity stall since the initial shutdown in March, resulting in our office realizing a 33% reduction in revenue,” dropping it from about $1.8 million to about $1.2 million, Bexley said.

By law, the clerk’s office can’t have a reserve or contingency fund, and 90% of its budget goes to personnel. So when revenue is

cut, the only option is laying off staff, Bexley said.

“I had to lay off friends, colleagues and neighbors in order to keep this office solvent,” he said.

“Decades of institutional knowledge walked out of this office in a day. It was truly one of the most difficult things I’ve had to do. The bottom line, though, is this can not continue.”

So far, he said, the public hasn’t been much affected, but, “come Oct. 1, I can no longer make that promise,” he said.

Without the county’s assistance, he said, his office would likely need to consolidate departments or close some sections of the office to the public.

The $250,000 Bexley was requesting, he told commissioners, wouldn’t be used to rehire the people who’ve lost their jobs, but to help prevent further losses.

“I’m coming here, hat in hand, asking you to help a neighbor, and that’s exactly what that $250,000 will do,” he said. Without assistance, he said, “I don’t see full restoration to make our office whole again for months, maybe longer.”

County Administrator Jerry Cameron said Bexley had been working with the county to minimize the needed appropriation.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the $250,000, and the county will seek reimbursement under the CARES Act. Email Jonathan Simmons at jonathan@palmcoastobserver.com.

To spur affordable home construction, county looks at ‘creative solutions’ Possibilities include providing incentives, cutting red-tape and allowing tiny-home communities.

As executive officer of the Flagler Home Builders Association, Annamaria Abad is the face of the residential construction industry in Flagler County.

But she’s also the face of something else, she said in a County Commission meeting Aug. 17: The need for affordable housing.

There’s a stereotype of the sort of people who need affordable housing, she told county commissioners. “Change it,” she said. She pointed at herself.

“This is it. This is the face that you should see when you think of affordable housing.”

Abad now owns her own home in Flagler, she said: She was able to purchase a house next door to her parents’ house from a family friend for a good price.

But before then, she’d spent five years living with her parents, and had needed government assistance for herself and her young daughter — even as a college-educated professional. “ I d i d n ’t c h o ose my

circumstances,” she said. “I did choose what to make of them, and that’s how I stand here before you today. But if I didn’t have my parents here, and now my neighbors, I wouldn’t have been able to do that.”

She added, “We’re college graduates. We’re contributors to this community. So you can choose to look at me as someone who’s on assistance, or a community leader. I’m both.”

Abad, a graduate of the University of North Florida and Flagler Palm Coast High School, was speaking to address a proposal by the county administration to entice builders to construct more affordable homes. The county, County Administrator Jerry Cameron said, could reduce builders’ “soft costs” in fees and other expenses in return for housing that’s priced to meet the needs of working people.

“The need for affordable workforce housing, supportive housing, is huge. The resources to deal with that are minuscule in government,” he said. “The pool of capital that’s necessary ... is the private sector.”

The county’s Health and Human Services Department has been working on proposals to help direct the private sector’s energies to that problem, he said.

“Our teachers, our public safety people, our court people, our services that we get every day, our restaurants — all of those folks

Joyce Bishop, the county’s Health and Human Services director, said that county staff have been getting a good look lately at what people are spending on housing because, with COVID-19, so many people are applying for assistance.

“The amounts that we’re seeing people paying for rent are just unbelievable: $1,750, $1,800, mortgages at $2,200,” she said.

The best longterm options, she said, seem to involve removing some regulatory burdens and providing incentives, while requiring developers to agree to certain price points for sales and rentals, limiting rent increases

to the Consumer Price Index, and requiring encumbered deeds to prevent people from buying homes with the purpose of quickly “flipping” them for a profit.

Affordable Housing Advisory Committee Chair Sandra Shank suggested that a community land trust would also be one way to protect affordability.

The proposal would address both single-family and multifamily housing.

Commissioner Donald O’Brien said that there’s a stigma against multifamily, but also potential benefits.

“The reality is, we probably can get more efficiency from the multifamily housing side, and there would probably be more investors willing to do that,” he said.

Abad urged commissioners to consider the county’s own staff members.

“I want you to think about where your employees go home at night,” she said. “Is it here in Flagler? Because I know a lot of employees here in Flagler have to go somewhere else ... to live because that’s what they can afford. And if those people do live here, could they survive one week without pay? That’s a real question, and it’s real for many people.”

The next step in the process, Cameron said, will involve staff creating an ordinance that would go before the County Commission for approval.

“It would open the door to some creative solutions, whether they be tiny-house communities or other creative solutions,” he said. “We would have more opportunity. ... It would open the door to a lot more creativity.”

BRIEFS County distributes CARES Act money Small businesses in Flagler County impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic have to date received the $2.4 million in CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act federal stimulus money that was sent to Flagler County from the state.

Officials anxiously await the remainder of the funds allocated by the state of Florida.

“We want businesses to continue to apply for grants so that everything is in place when we get additional monies,” said Tourism Director Amy Lukasik. “We want to be able to continue to pump that money into the economy as quickly as possible.”

This portion of the CARES program allows small businesses to access grant money to help cover business expenses, including employee wages, mortgage, rent, vendor invoices, utility bills, payroll and other costs to offset the financial impact due to business interruption or closures as a result of COVID-19.

Qualified small businesses that were negatively impacted by COVID-19 are eligible for between $3,000 and $50,000, based on the number of employees.

ield trips aren’t happening for Flagler Schools students this fall, but they’re happening at Huckleberry Farms.

The farm hosted its first Out School session on Aug. 14, with Heather Beaven as instructor.

She taught a dozen children how to plant a seed.

“If you have the lacein-the-mist, this is going to grow about a foot tall,” she said. “Keep your soil damp, not wet. … Seeds shouldn’t get too wet or too dry — kind of like

your feet.”

That inspired one student to share his experience with wet socks at soccer practice.

Some students planted catnip, which can be used as a tea, Beaven said.

In future weeks, there will be tours of the farm to learn about snakes, frogs and insects. For more information, search for “HuckleberryFarmsFL” on Facebook.

FARM, Y’ALL! Huckleberry Farms was named for a horse that was rescued when it weighed 700 pounds. It now weighs 1,110 pounds and has become a sort of mascot. If you would have polled a group of mamas back in January and asked “What will be your biggest concern for August 2020?” I can guarantee no one could have guessed the answers they might give today. We probably would be more concerned with what items we still have to get on the supply list and getting the kids back on a routine that includes going to bed early. While these items may still be on people’s minds, there are other concerns looming.

As a former kindergarten teacher and daughter of a second grade teacher, I can imagine the stresses that each teacher is feeling right now. It is more important now than ever that we support our school employees and administrators.

Speaking from experience, this is one of the most challenging careers out there, without a global pandemic going on. If you’re looking for ways to show support, just ask your child(ren)’s teacher! There most likely will be something you can help with, but just knowing they have your support might make the world of difference.

Kindness matters more than ever right now. Whether your friend or neighbor chose to send her kids back

to school and is sitting on the front porch with a mimosa waving as the bus drives by or she chose to step back from her career to stay home and teach her children because she just couldn’t send them back yet, we need to love on each other. The choice is a difficult one for most moms I have spoken to.

I know there are families who still worry about the unknown based on the decision they made. Show support by having candid conversations and encouraging each other. You never know who might need your smile.

Feel free to join me in this prayer: Lord God, We give our children to you today and every day. Keep them and their classmates safe and protected. I ask that this school year, you would use every person, experience and lesson to shape their hearts and minds. Teach them the value of hard work and communication as they continue to learn and grow.

Bless the teachers and administrators. Keep them safe and healthy.

Continue to guide them to make the best decisions for our children.

Remind them of their special place in the lives of their students and give them confidence in their abilities.

For all of the parents, I pray for peace. Let us be extraordinarily grateful for the privilege of parenting. Fill us with wisdom as we watch our babies grow. Grant us patience and kindness as they stretch their wings. Hold us close to you as we learn to let them go. Amen!

The second phase of the Holland Park renovation project is four months from completion and will feature a splash pad that will be the park’s new signature feature, with jets of water shooting from lifelike frogs, dolphins and rays while while visitors swing from hammocks or climb around treehouses.

There will also be a whimsical steam engine and carriage.

“James F. Holland Park is near and dear to me, and I am thrilled to share this state-ofthe-art project with our community,” Mayor Milissa Holland said. “There will be something for everyone.”

Phase II also included a new bocce court with a shade covering and new LED lighting for all sports courts.

Construction is expected to be completed by late December.

The city is also adding new family swings and elements with accessibility features to the playground.

Due to COVID-19 and construction, only specific sections of Holland Park are presently open. They include tennis, pickleball, shuffleboard, basketball, bocce, horseshoes, volleyball, baseball/softball, and multi-use fields where you can play soccer, football, etc. Visitors can also walk the three-quarter mile trail or bring their pup to the dog park.

Parks staff is following all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for safety and cleanliness.

Located at 18 Florida Park Drive, Holland Park is also the home to the Palm Coast Historical Society headquarters, which is celebrating 50 years this year and planning their Founder’s Day for October.

Sun Summer Camp were not sure what to expect, but even in the shadow of COVID-19, city staff were still about to create a fun environment for 76 kids this year. Everyone followed safety measures.

“I am so proud of the resiliency demonstrated by our staff,” said Parks and Recreation Director Lauren Johnston.

FCSO K-9 RETIRES FOR MEDICAL REASONS, WILL LIVE WITH HANDLER

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Valor is retiring for medical reasons after three years and three months of dedicated service to the community of Flagler County.

K-9 Valor was born on March 31, 2016. He began his career with the FCSO in May of 2017.

During his time at the FCSO, K-9 Valor was deployed 209 times, recovered over 4,200 grams of illegal narcotics and made 28 criminal apprehensions.

“It is always bitter sweet when any member of the FCSO family retires,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “K-9 Valor ... is a very good boy, and I hope he enjoys his special retirement bone.”

During K-9 Valor’s retirement, he will live with his handler, Deputy First-Class Gib Smith, and his family.

Flagler Schools held a Back to School Drive-Thru for families Aug. 13, at the Hidden Trails Community Center.

The day before, on Aug. 12, 359 bags were distributed to families at the Carver Community Center. The bags contained school supplies as well as a list of mental health resources and food pantries, the 2020-2021 school calendar, internet safety information, and other resources.

Counseling services were also available at the Connect Bus. “It is fulfilling to provide and refer services to the community,” Brandy Williams, a Counselor

Services adviser, said.

“It is always good to have a personal connection while being safe,” added Sabrina Cosby, Flagler Schools’ administrative coordinator for communications and special projects.

The Police Athletic League also handed out craft bags, which kids can use to learn to make crafts with deputies online at 3 p.m. every weekday next week on the Flagler Sheriff Police Athletic League’s Facebook page.

The campus of Wadsworth Elementary and Buddy Taylor Middle schools hosted a drive-thru Aug. 19, and Wadsworth Park in Flagler Beach will host one 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 20.

Hammock Dunes home sells for $2.4 million WAYNE GRANT REAL ESTATE EDITOR

house in Hammock Dunes was the top real estate transaction for the week of July 9-15 in Flagler County in the Multiple Listing Service. CPD Investment Group LLC, of Palm Coast, sold 42 Island Estates Parkway to Calle Gato Ocho LLC, of Lake Worth, for $2.4 million. Built in 1992, the house is a 5/6.5 and has two fireplaces, a swimming pool, boat dock, fountain and 7,262 square feet. It sold in 2004 for $2.5 million.
