In a County Commission meeting held the following Monday, Aug.

U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz applauded the efficient, combined efforts between many organizations involved in the effort to strengthen Flagler County’s coast, during a tour on Aug. 1. County Engineer Faith Alkhatib led the tour, which was attended by county staff and press, along with Ron Meade, Florida Department of Transportation operations engineer for District 5; Alan Hyman, FDOT District 5 director; and County Commissioner Dave Sullivan. The group first visited the north side, where the seawall has been completed and is being covered with dune vegetation. However, there were concerns about the strength, durability, and maintenance of the project. Waltz said he will be looking for more alternatives and emerging technologies that would offer a longer term solution. The project will be followed by a renourishment interval averaging 11 years over the project’s 50-year life. Funding is 65% federal. Waltz is aware of climate change and sea levels rising in Florida and around the world. He is also part of the American Flood Coalition, a nonpartisan group that has come together to

It’s showtime New $2 million wing, renovations open at Flagler Auditorium PAIGE WILSON COMMUNITY EDITOR

When longtime choir teacher at Flagler Palm Coast High School, Amy Fulmer, took over the role of Flagler Auditorium Performing Arts Center Director on June 1, she spent time working at the concession stand, as an usher and at the front door to scan tickets. “I just knew I needed to be in every-

body’s shoes so I could listen to their problems and also have a little empathy for the situation — and also to see what works well and what didn’t work well and what I might want to change,” Fulmer said. Fulmer was publicly recognized as the new director at a ribbon-cutting ceremony packed with local officials and residents on Monday, Aug. 5, to celebrate the approximately $2 million renovations and expansions that are officially complete at the auditorium. “This ribbon-cutting has dual meaning to me,” Flagler Auditorium Governing Board President Laurie Alter said. “First, it’s the celebration of this new addition and the renovations, and it’s an on-going effort of expansion — allowing our auditorium to continue as a cultural entertainment center for Flagler County. And it also serves as a hub for arts in education within the Flagler County School system. And secondly, it reinforces the unique collaborative efforts of our governing board and our school district in support of the cultural arts for the entire community.” Initial improvements began in 2015 with a grant from the Flagler County Commission and the Tourist Development New Flagler Auditorium Director Amy Fulmer thanks guests for supporting the auditorium.

Part of the $2-million renovation and expansion includes a new box office.

Council for $150,000, which was used to install a new marquee. Alter said that the Flagler County School District funded almost half of the $2 million for the facility. The newest additions include a conference room, offices, upgraded box office, additional restroom facilities and technical upgrades. The Florida Department of Cultural Affairs granted the auditorium $500,000 toward this expansion, and $650,000 was matched by the Auditorium Governing Board, Alter said. “I also want to extend a very heartfelt thanks to Kim Carney, our past governing board president, and our dear friend Lisa McDevitt,” Alter said. “They had the vision and the tenacity to initiate this project.” Former auditorium director McDevitt died in January following a long and successful tenure as director. Fulmer said the auditorium’s mission “to enrich lives through inspirational and educational cultural experienc-

es” will never change, even with a new director. Fulmer does have a vision for the auditorium to be a vessel that unites locals around the arts. “I would like to get more people involved in the community, of all ages,” Fulmer said. “I’d like people to see Flagler Auditorium as a place to come see a live performance, and I’d like to widen our age demographic.” Fulmer said she’s performed at the auditorium every year of her adult life, through her role as choral director at FPC, the last role of her nearly 30-year teaching career in Flagler Schools. “Here, we’re able for the kids to really feel like they’re on a big stage,” she said. “And when they start when they’re really little, they never get nervous. My son grew up here, my son worked in the box office here, so Flagler Auditorium has shaped my adult life. I kind of call it home.” Visit https://flaglerauditorium.org.

Dual enrollment numbers double in Flagler Student enrollment in other advanced courses has remained comparatively flat. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

The number of Flagler Schools students taking dual enrollment classes — college credit courses offered by nearby colleges and universities — has more than doubled in recent years, rising from 289 students in 2015-2016 to 588 during the last school year. There are 11,904 students in the district. The percentage of the student population taking those classes rose from 7% to 13.38%. In the same time frame, the number of students taking Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education courses has stayed comparatively flat, increasing by just 61 students, from 661 to 722. The percentage of the overall student population taking those classes rose from 16% to 16.44%. “Those (dual enrollment) percentages have increased a lot higher than our AP, IB and AICE,” Flagler Schools Executive Director of Leadership Development Earl Johnson told School Board members during a board workshop Aug. 6. “That is a 103% increase in the number of students who are taking dual enroll-

ment courses now versus four years ago, so I think that is really substantial.” Johnson presented the numbers as part of the district’s annual report on equity in the school district. The report looks at the racial and gender breakdown of students in advanced classes and sports programs, and how different racial and gender groups are divided among school staff and administration. Over the past few years, he said, there’s been a notable population change affecting the district: “When you look at whites, as a group, the increase from 2014-15 to 2018-19, in terms of numbers, it’s 5%,” Johnson said. “But when you look at Hispanics, it’s 24%. So we have 24% more Hispanic students in Flagler County now that we had in 2014-15.” Hispanic males, he added, have increased by 27%, while black students have decreased by 2% overall, and black males by 7% overall. Hispanic males are also an outlier in participation in advanced courses: The percentage of Hispanic male students AP, IB, AICE, DE or honors classes (collectively known as “Level 3” classes) dropped from 46% to 38% from 2014-2015 to 2018-2018, even though the actual number of students rose from 127 to 132, he said. “I’m not 100% sure why that

THIS WEEKEND

Tree work fells pine through couple’s roof, into bedroom JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

AUG 9-11 Ocean Center Daytona Beach

One place. One weekend. All your projects solved. But the tree limb that pierced through the ceiling is still there, embedded in the house. What’s next for the couple? “I have no idea,” Helga Mestres said. “They’re waiting for the HOA and the golf course,” Shah said. “The HOA said their insurance and their lawyers are looking at it. But they’re in limbo.” (The Pine Lakes Golf Course could not be reached for comment before the Palm Coast Observer’s print time.) The home is a townhouse, and the tree also appeared to have caused some damage to the roof of the unit next door, Helga Mestres said. Concerned about rain storms and potential water intrusion, the Mestres will be using another bedroom in the house until the damage is taken care of, they said.

Helga Mestres was asleep the morning of Aug. 2 when a tree toppled through the roof of her home on Village Circle in Palm Coast. “All of a sudden I hear a huge bang and boom, like a bomb fell on the house,” she said. “It startled me, and I jumped up off the bed, all confused ... and I ran outside, and there was a tree on the house.” And also in the house: One limb of the tree had pierced the tile roof and the attic, and punched a hole into the ceiling of the master bedroom. “I cannot even tell you what was going through my mind; it was just indescribable,” Mestres said. Mestres’ husband, Miguel Mestres, had been outside that morning on the couple’s porch, watching workers on the nearby Pine Lakes Golf Course fell trees. They were guiding one down with a rope when something went wrong, and one of the workers yelled at him to get out of the way. “I get out, and the tree was coming down. It landed on the porch between the porch and the bedroom,” he said. He went to check on Helga, and found her unharmed, but shaken. The couple spent the day at the home of their cousin, Deborah Shah. Workers placed a blue tarp on the roof, holding it down with sand bags and bits of broken roofing tile.

Focaccia owners open Faro Beachside Eatery

Schools should focus on more important issues than dress code

The Italian restaurant specializes in small plate dishes, pizza, and meat and cheese boards. RAY BOONE SPORTS EDITOR

Dario Carbone and Alexia Tarantino dreamed of opening a second restaurant ever since they opened Focaccia Italian Eatery in Palm Coast six years ago. The couple loved the Flagler Beach area: The ocean scenery was beautiful, there were no franchises, and the town had a comfortable vibe to it. “Focaccia was our starting point,” Tarantino said. “We kind of got to test the waters out.” At first, it was just the two of them working at the restaurant, with Carbone in the kitchen and Tarantino at the front. However, their restaurant grew, and on July 19 they opened Faro Beachside Eatery, located at 311 N. Oceanshore Blvd. in Flagler Beach. It’s a “modern, fast-casual” Italian restaurant that specializes in small plate dishes, pizza, and meat and cheese boards. Carbone and Tarantino, who were both born and raised in Rome until moving to Flagler County in May 2013, put a huge emphasis on fresh ingredients. Everything is made from scratch and prepared in-house every day. “We wanted to bring something new here,” Carbone said, “some-

thing different.” With the opening of Faro, Carbone and Tarantino said they’re a little more hands-off with Focaccia, but they’re still at their original restaurant every day. Their workday begins at about 8 a.m. and ends usually at midnight. “We serve only food that we grew up eating, so we have that

passion for it,” Tarantino said. “We spend a lot of time at work, so you have to be very passionate about what you do because you spend your life here. I think if you’re passionate about what you do, it comes easy.” Have an idea for a business story? Email Ray Boone at ray@ palmcoastobserver.com.

From $180’s

(Editor’s note: The following was in response to the Palm Coast Observer’s story on the dress code in the Aug. 1 edition.) Dear Editor: Flagler County school district, I am very disappointed in you! Why don’t you focus on allocating taxpayers’ money to field trips and focus on student starvation/poverty, focus on academic achievement through positive reinforcements? I myself proudly worked to give back to my peers through numerous ways. I created the “Bulldog B.U.G. Award” that Is awarded to students who show grade improvement. I also worked with head of the Flagler County schools food department to better school lunches after our former first lady made a disaster across our nation. You enforce so many rules that students don’t even want to go to school! They don’t feel comfortable and feel as if they can’t be themselves and express themselves through their fashion. You have the audacity to ask parents to go out and buy more clothes that fit your dress code policy, even though times are hard enough financially. The amount of single parents that work their a---- off to support their children in Flagler County is outrageous! Work on minimizing the bus stop mile marker so our school transportation isn’t driving past kids that live 1.9 miles away from their school. What’s sad is their parents are paying taxes so those buses can operate! So many issues! Change is desperately needed. DARRYL BOYER

Flagler County deputy to be reinstated

Murder suspect, 16, will be tried as an adult

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office terminated Deputy Robert Finn over a year ago following a failure to immediately take action to a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the Interstate 95 off-ramp at Palm Coast Parkway on April 16, 2018. The vehicle was soon after involved in a deadly vehicle crash on I-95. Finn appealed his termination, and the arbitrator’s decision was received July 31, 2019. The arbitrator found that Finn “erred several times and disobeyed rules and regulations of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.” Nonetheless, the arbitrator ruled that FCSO must reinstate Finn as an employee without back pay or missed benefits. “Although we disagree with the decision ... we believe in the process of law,” FCSO Chief of Staff Mark Strobridge said. Finn will return to work at the FCSO as a deputy sheriff in the Community Policing division. He will receive additional training to aid in his performance.

Benjamin Allen, the 16-yearold previously arrested for the shooting death of 17-year-old Elijah Rizvan, was indicted by a grand jury Aug. 1 for firstdegree murder and will be tried as an adult by 7th Circuit State Attorney R. J. Larizza. “We fully support the state’s decision to try this young man as an adult in the shooting death of another teenager,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “We applaud the grand jury and State Attorney Larizza and hope that this sends a loud and clear message that this behavior will be taken seriously and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” Allen was held at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Daytona Beach after his arrest on July 14. On the night of Aug. 1, Allen was brought to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility for processing following the indictment. Allen is being held by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at the Duval County Jail in Jacksonville as a courtesy hold

because the Flagler County jail does not have the capacity to hold juveniles. “Gun violence and murder place a cloud of fear and despair over or neighborhoods and communities,” State Attorney R. J. Larizza said. “It is especially disheartening when the violence involves teenagers. Charging the defendant as an adult was necessary for two reasons – to protect our neighborhoods and communities, and to hold the defendant accountable for his intentional and deadly crime.”

Aug. 5, Atlee requested a spot on the upcoming meeting’s agenda, and the board — with Hansen dissenting, saying later that he believed the proposed development to be out of character with the neighborhood — opted to grant him one. ing that would have allowed the construction of a 54-home development in the Hammock. Then the county entered into mediation with Atlee, and the commission voted 3-2 to OK rezoning for a development with up to 50 homes. But it didn’t ratify that decision at the next meeting, opting instead to table it. Now, the commission has added the proposal to the upcoming Aug. 19 meeting agenda. The 12-acre parcel at the intersection of State Road A1A and Jungle Hut Road, to be named Beachwalk, is currently zoned residential commercial, and Atlee had petitioned to have the zoning changed to “planned unit development,” or PUD. The change would have also reduced the required minimum lot size from 75 feet to 50 feet, which would mean as many as 87 homes would fit on the parcel, rather than 34. Atlee was planning for 54 homes, he said. Following mediation, Atlee proposed a 50-unit maximum and some other alterations, and the commission OK’d the project 3-2, with commissioners Greg Hansen and Charlie Ericksen dissenting. But it opted to delay ratification.

Elections office to add security barriers Flagler County’s Supervisor of Elections Office will gain two new protective barriers: a bank-teller-style glass barrier at the officer’s front counter to separate staff from the public, and a glass barrier in the Canvassing Board meeting room to separate the public from ballot tabulation machines. The Department of Homeland Security identified those spots as security issues. The County Commission voted unanimously to spend up to $15,300 for the upgrades.

Enticing aviation businesses to city Councilman Jack Howell, himself a pilot, has been working with city staff to produce a video to entice businesses that are members of the National Business Aviation Association to move to Palm Coast, he told council members at the Aug. 6 meeting. He’s seeking businesses of 500 or fewer employees. “They pay well, these companies,” he said. “And they don’t have to be right at the airport.” “If it’s good for the city, it’s good for me,” Councilman Eddie Branquinho said. “Go fishing, Jack!” said Councilman Nick Klufas.

JTL Grand Landings had, months prior, proposed a more ambitious plan that would have involved adding 113 acres and raising the number of units to 1,150. James E. Lawson, 68, passed away on July 3, 2019 in Palm Coast, FL where he resided for the last 25 years. Jim was much loved and known as a gregarious guy who was loyal to his friends and fiercely proud of his service to his country. Plans are currently underway for internment at Arlington National Cemetery where his remains will be laid to rest. Jim was born in Jellico, Tennessee and moved to Sidney, Ohio as an infant. He retired from active duty after serving the Navy as a radioman for 24 years. Jim’s last assignment was as chief radioman aboard the USS Mobile Bay (CG-53). During his naval career he served on the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19), USS England (CG-72) and USS Midway (CV-41). Other assignments included Naval Communications Station San Francisco, Amphibious Base Coronado, California, Naval Supply Activity Vietnam, Commander Naval Forces Korea, Naval communications Station Japan and Naval Communications Station San Diego. He eventually settled in Palm Coast, Florida where he married his beloved wife Sheree Maley of 23 years. During his time in Palm Coast, Jim was Quality Control Manager for the construction of the Ponte Vedra and Flagler bridges as well as other major projects in Florida. He is survived by his wife, Sheree; his son, Jesse Lawson of San Diego, Calif.; his mother Billa Jean Lawson of Sidney, Ohio; sisters Brenda Harmon and Sandra Mohr of Cincinnati and Oxford, brother Randy Lawson of Fremont, Wisconsin; and grandsons, Caspian and Zephyr Lawson of San Diego; He is also survived by stepson Shane Hillard of Denton, Maryland; stepdaughter, Stacie Peters of Easton Maryland; grandchildren, Nichole, Shaina, Christian, Trenton, Ryleigh, Cruz and Roman and great grandchildren, Dez, Kerrigan, Simone, Brysen, Teighan and Dempsey, and mother and father-in-law Jim and Vonnie Maley. Veterans in Flagler County will now have a new ride to their medical appointments, thanks to a donation of $12,000 from the Flagler Sportfishing Club to the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 86 of Palm Coast. The check was presented to the DAV during a Sportfishing Club meeting on the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8696. Ernie Morris, of the DAV, said he was “elated” to receive the donation. The money came from donations from sponsors and participants of the 23rd-annual Spring Classic fishing tournament in April. The tournament, led by codirectors Dana Syens and Rita Waddell, had 128 participants, up

from 110 last year — with 90 boats and one kayak. “We couldn’t believe it,” Morris said. “The ladies had set a goal of $10,000 this year. Last year, it was $7,000 they donated, and we were extremely appreciative of that. This year, they set a goal of $10,000, and they’ve exceeded that. So, we’re ecstatic.” Syens said she was happy to make the DAV the tournament beneficiary for the second year in a row, as the organization relies on community support to help disabled veterans in Flagler County. “We’ve done other things in the past, but I think the DAV is the most appreciative and deserving of it,” she said. “They’ve also helped us a lot. Some of their veterans can hardly walk, but they were there putting up tents and tables and everything else.”

Disabled American Veterans The DAV is located at 27 Florida Park Drive N. Call 439-2122 for assistance and services. For more information about the sportfishing club, visit https:// flaglersportfishing.com.

Flagler County’s Veterans Services Office will aid Blue Water Navy veterans — veterans who served on ships near the shores of Vietnam and Cambodia during the Vietnam War — with Agent Orange claims. “I just want to make sure the word is being spread out that we’re doing the Blue Water Navy claims, even though they won’t be seeing them until 2020, next year,” Acting Veterans Services Officer Eric Febles Flores said. “But we do intend to file claims.”

Nominate a vet for Veteran of the Year The Flagler County Veterans Services Council is in the process of forming a committee to select the county’s Veteran of the Year, and nominations for Veteran of the Year will be due on Sept. 30. For details on how to nominate a veteran, go to https://bit. ly/2YJAchX.

Chris Sleep, Hershel Gober and Steve Lunsford, of the Palm Coast chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, attended the Palm Coast City Council meeting Aug. 6 for the reading of a proclamation declaring Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Day in the city of Palm Coast. Councilman Jack Howell, commandant of the Palm Coast chapter, read the proclamation. The Flagler County Commission read a similar proclamation at its meeting on Aug. 5. The proclamations illuminated some of the history of the award — the oldest American military decoration in the country, initially know as the Badge of Military Merit and established by Gen. George Washington on Aug. 7, 1782 — and acknowledged veterans who have died in service or been wounded in combat. Both proclamations also declared Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Day.

Barbecue planned for veterans Palm Coast is planning a special Veterans Day barbecue for veterans and their families this year. The event will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Central Park in Town Center. It will be free to attendees, but attendees are encouraged to sign up to attend through a veterans group, so that the city knows how many people to cook for. The barbecue will follow Flagler County’s 10 a.m. Veterans Day ceremony and precede Flagler Beach’s 1 p.m. Veterans Day ceremony.

T

he Bulldogs were down 7-0 to Winter Park entering the second half of the first round of the 2018 FHSAA playoffs. Although the No. 7 seed Bulldogs were the underdogs against No. 2 seed Winter Park, there was a belief that Flagler Palm Coast could pull out the victory. That didn’t happen. Although the Bulldogs’ freshman quarterback, Preston Roberts, tied the game with a touchdown pass to Jordan Belle with 7 minutes left in the third quarter, Winter Park scored 28 straight points from that point on, including an 81-yard passing touchdown and two pick-sixes. Winter Park won 34-7 and for the second year in a row, the Bulldogs’ playoff hopes were shattered in the first round. But with the start of the 2019 season a few weeks away, the Bulldogs vowed not to let that loss define them. “That was the worst loss I’ve ever had,” rising senior offensive lineman Devon Conkrite said. “We just came out and completely blew it. We just bowed down to them, and I know that’s not the team we are. People might say it every year, but there’s really something special on this team. I know there is. We’re going to go very, very far.” First, the good: FPC returns the majority of

its starters on offense, including quarterback Donovan Montoyo, future Division I running back Ty Jenkins and four senior offensive linemen. Bruising running back Marc Genis, who missed much of last season with a knee injury, is healthy for his senior season. The Bulldogs also added Jonathan Richard, who started at wide receiver for Mainland last season. “I expect the offense to be explosive,” FPC head coach Travis Roland said. “Hopefully we’re going to do what we’re supSEE BULLDOGS PAGE 12

posed to do: come out and dominate in the running game and the passing game.” One of the most intriguing questions for the Bulldogs’ offense is what they’ll do with Montoyo and sophomore signal caller Preston Roberts, who showed tremendous progress throughout his freshman season and throughout this past summer. “Preston’s got so much talent, same with Donovan,” Roland said. “It’s hard to sit either one of them. It’s going to be a gameby-game, week-by-week, s e r i e s - by- s e r i e s deal thing. But I think we

can win a championship with either one of them. We want to win our district first and go from there, but I’ve got faith in both of those guys.” Now, the not so good: The Bulldogs will feature an almost entirely new defense after losing 10 starters from last season. Senior linebacker Tobin Hackett will be starting for the first time ever this upcoming season, but he’s not worried about how the defense will perform. “It’s just lining up and performing your assignment,” he said. “Everybody’s got the intensity and skill. It’s going to be a new experience.”

“We’re going to be wellcoached, and our kids are going to be disciplined, so I don’t expect them to struggle too much. We might have some growing pains. But at the same time, we have kids who have been waiting their turn, so they’re hungry.” FPC coach Travis Roland on the Bulldogs’ defense

Marineland Dolphin Adventure welcomes new management PAIGE WILSON COMMUNITY EDITOR

This summer, Marineland Dolphin Adventure changed hands with the sale of the facility from the Georgia Aquarium to Dolphin Discovery. But Julie Wendt, assistant supervisor of animal training, said the high-quality care has stayed the same for the marine life there. “We still give the animals topnotch quality care as far as diet, habitat, learning opportunities, social health (and) emotional health,” she said. Wendt said that more faces have come to the marine life facility this summer after the change in management, due to a decrease in admission prices, new marketing tactics, new elements in dolphin shows and height restrictions for dolphin programs (instead of age). “We got some new resources for some new dolphin toys; that’s really exciting for us,” Wendt said. “That just adds to the quality of care. Enrichment is really important.”

Photos by Paige Wilson

Enrichment is the practice of introducing new learning opportunities for the dolphins through interactions with bought or homemade toys and devices, all meant to stimulate the dolphins’ brain and replicate playful tendencies dolphins would have in the wild. “What we like to encourage is natural behavior, so if they’re out in the natural environment, what are they going to do? Knock things around, they’re going to explore their environment,” she said. “So, we will create enrichment devices that enrich all different parts of the environment.” Wendt, a Palm Coast resident, has worked at Marineland for two years. But her love for dolphins began as a child. “We like to invite as many people as we can in here to experience the animals in a safe, respectful way because that’s how connections are made; I’m proof of that,” she said. “I did a program like this dolphin interaction program we offer here when I was very young and it helped teach me about marine life when I didn’t live by an ocean, and it helped me care about the troubles that oceans are faced now. Without that experience, I wouldn’t have become passionate about what I do, and so I know the power that these types of programs have to make connections.” There are currently 14 dolphins at Marineland, four of which are juveniles. The oldest one, Betty, is in her early 50s, which Wendt said far exceeds ages in the wild. “The unfortunate reality is that dolphins don’t live much past 20s and 30s in the natural environment, and even shorter in some areas,” she said. She noted that Betty’s long life has been directed correlated to the high-quality fish, clean habitat, learning opportunities to stimulate her brain and medical care available to her at Marineland. Beyond dolphin care, Marineland houses a 20-year-old, SEE MARINELAND PAGE 14

dance, and he’ll wiggle back and forth when he gets scratched,” she said. With the end of the 13thannual kids summer camp this past week, Marineland is setting its sights on collaborations with local schools this fall, said Terran McGinnis, manager of education and community development. “We’ve totally revamped that program this year so we have a whole new selection of subject matter and topics that teachers can choose from,” she said. Adult groups and homeschool students are welcome to arrange trips to Marineland too. McGinnis said that the facility is working to develop more programs aimed for preschool age kids to do with

their parents. Rymfire Elementary School already has a partnership with Marineland, as it supports the Roadrunners running club. The club’s 5K participants get passes to Marineland, and the 5K winners get to do a dolphin program. “We really do want to start developing some close relationships with individual teachers or entire schools that can be part of our educational think tank when we have an idea we’d want to float,” McGinnis said. Also on the horizon is creating one-day camps that would be scheduled on teacher work days for Flagler County and St. John’s County school districts. Visit https://marineland.net.

250-pound male loggerhead named Rocky. He came to Marineland in 2014 after being hit by a boat in the Gulf of Mexico — twice on the shell and once on the head, leaving him blind in his left eye. “Most sea turtles that get hit like that wouldn’t survive, so he’s our little fighter,” said Taylor Conlon, who’s worked at Marineland since March. Marineland guests can learn about turtles like Rocky during the Turtle Talk programs on site. Pokey, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, is another resident of Marineland. Condon said that Kemp’s ridleys are the smallest and rarest type of sea turtle because of their nesting habits in which they arrive on beaches in Central America by the thousands, causing them to nearly be poached to extinction. Pokey has a bilateral degenerative joint disease in his shoulder and will be in human care his whole life, she said. “Now, he lives happily in his retirement home with us,” Conlon said. At 35 years old, Pokey is fully grown, weighing 85 pounds. He came to Marineland in 2015, and his favorite fish is mackerel, which Conlon stuffs with vitamin capsules like calcium for him to enjoy. She bonds with Pokey by giving him shell scratches with a brush, as a form of enrichment that mimics sea grasses; turtles have nerve endings on the back on their shell. “He does what we call the Pokey

“You don’t need to spend a lot to be a good grill master.” This is what Chef Warren Caterson said to begin his hourlong presentation that launched the free cooking series at the Flagler County Public Library. On Friday, July 19, Caterson explained step-by-step his tips and tricks to ensure that anything you grill, you grill well. About 30 people sat in the library’s meeting room to hear the first presentation of the series: “The Thrill of the Grill.” Ranging from children to senior citizens, the audience showed that cooking can interest all ages. Here are some pieces of advice that Caterson shared in regards to grilling: n Gear: indoor grill pan or outdoor grill (gas or electric), wide spatula, wire basket, spray bottle to clean the grill, meat thermometer brush for spreading marinades and sauces. n Meat memo: Marinades will not make a cheap, tough piece of meat flavorful and tender. n Marinade timing: For shrimp, no more than 15 minutes; For chicken, about 4-6 hours; For

Arthur Murray Dance Studio celebrates three years in Palm Coast PAIGE WILSON COMMUNITY EDITOR

With flapper dresses, feather boas and vintage-inspired suits, guests filled the Palm Coast Community Center for a party worthy of the lavish Gatsby mansion as seen in the 2013 film based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel “The Great Gatsby.” Partygoers raised a glass of champagne to toast the threeyear anniversary of Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Palm Coast during the roaring ’20s-themed celebration on Tuesday, July 30. Owner and franchiser Alexander Ivanov and his guests were dressed to the nines to ring in three years of the business located in City Marketplace at 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite A214. The Gatsby Gala included a champagne reception, live music, dance performances, dinner, cash bar and raffles. The dance studio teaches the cha-cha, disco/the hustle, foxtrot, mambo, merengue, rumba, salsa, samba, swing, tango and waltz to a diverse age group of locals.
