County, Army Corps of Engineers sign beach renourishment agreement JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Flagler County has been seeking the Army Corps of Engineers’ support for a beach renourishment program in Flagler Beach for more than a decade. Now, the county finally has it: In a ceremony held at the Government Services Building July 23, County Commission Chairman Donald O’Brien, County Attorney Al Hadeed and Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District Cmdr. Col. Andrew Kelly signed a project partnership agreement between the two government bodies. “This project is critical for the protection of our shoreline,” O’Brien said. “It’s so important for us to have this project, so that we protect our shoreline and make sure that we protect all that property behind A1A, and our businesses, as well.” Kelly said Flagler Beach has experienced significant erosion. “This program is intended to reduce storm damage by 95% over the life of the project, to the tune of $1.1 million per year,” he said. It will also provide more than three acres of habitat for imperiled wildlife, he said. Imperiled species that would gain habitat space include the piping plover, a shorebird; and three sea turtle species: the leatherback turtle, loggerhead turtle and green turtle, according to the Army Corps. The stretch of beach to be

renourished, from Sixth Street South to 28th Street South, is 2.6 miles, and the project length will be 50 years, with additional renourishment planned for approximately every 11 years after the initial renourishment. The work will cost an estimated $17.5 million and involve 500,000 cubic yards of sand, dredged from a borrow site about 10 miles offshore, for the initial project. Most of the money — 65% — for the initial project will be federal, with the rest coming from the county and other sources. Four supplemental renourishments over the course of the 50-year project timeline will involve 320,000 cubic yards of sand and are expected to total $81.3 million, shared 50-50 local and federal, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. Critically for the county, the agreement requires that the federal government repair, at its cost, any project damage that occurs as a result of a hurricane, Flagler County Engineer Faith Alkhatib said. Construction is planned to start in the of spring 2020 and last approximately six months. The Army Corps project will supplement the ongoing countyled renourishment project that is occurring along 11.4 miles of beach north of State Road 100. “This project, combined with what we did in the north, is probably the most important public works project in the history of this county,” Hadeed said.

Sea you later Jupiter, a subadult loggerhead turtle, makes his way to the waves.

The Florida Aquarium released one loggerhead and three green sea turtles back in the general area where they were rescued. PAIGE WILSON COMMUNITY EDITOR

As the waves crashed into the shore of Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area in Flagler Beach, a subadult loggerhead turtle named Jupiter scurried down the sand and propelled himself into the water. Four turtles who were rescued locally were released back into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, July 18, after a few months of rehabili-

tation at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. Jupiter, who weighs 75 pounds, and the three juvenile green sea turtles Enterprise, Canaveral and Satellite, have names that were derived from a combination of space and Florida themes. “None of those animals had any injuries that were too terrible, so we were able to rehab them pretty fast, which is exciting,” Florida Aquarium Senior Sea Turtle Biologist Rachel Thomas said. The turtles were rescued in February and April of this year, ranging in location from the Daytona and New Smyrna Beach area, to Vilano Beach. When Jupiter was rescued, he

was a little cold, Thomas said. “When they get pushed up on the beach, their body temperature drops because the air temperature’s so cool,” she said. All the turtles were found with cold-stunning and other debilitating effects, including low red blood cell count, low blood sugar and a variety of infections. Enterprise received initial triage at The Whitney Laboratory in Marineland, before rehabilitation at the Florida Aquarium. Thomas noted that it’s typically good practice to release the turtles back in the general area of where they were rescued. “It’s the best part of the job — for sure,” Thomas said. “You see these animals go from really weak and sick and barely moving, like Jupiter, when he first came in, barely moved at all, to practically crawling out of the cart before we put him in the water. So, it feels really good to be able to turn these animals into the wild where they can do the most good for their populations, because all species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered.” A small crowd that gathered watched the release with pure joy, including Palm Coast resident Kelley Schultz, who started diving 41 years ago at age 20. “It never gets old when you see

a turtle,” Schultz said. “They’re just so pretty underwater; they’re friendly underwater.” Schultz considers sea turtles to be her favorite animal; she even has a design of one on her phone case, which could be proudly seen as she recorded the release. “It brought tears to my eyes,” Schultz said.

District system helps students access mental health services The district last year implemented a new, tiered mental health care plan for students. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

In the school district’s first year of using a new, tiered system of mental health services for students, more than 1,000 have been identified as needing additional assistance and directed to supplemental resources. The district’s system categorizes students along three tiers: Tier one involves services that every student receives; tier two is for students with short-term mental health care needs that can be managed on-site at the schools, and tier three is for students who require more extensive assistance or referrals for outside mental health care services, Flagler Schools Executive Director of Student and Community Engagement Lynette Shott told School Board members at a board workshop July 16. There were a total of 683 students classified on tier two this past year, Shott said, but, “that number, we feel, was ... inflated,” with school staff erring on the side of caution. For tier three, she said, there were 615 referrals for additional services. Of those, 193 were assigned to counselors that work for the school district, while 422 were referred out to affiliated agencies. Board member Colleen Conklin asked Shott if the district has maintained data on how many of the 422 students who were referred to other agencies actually received services. Shott said the district does keep those records. In addition to the students on tier three who have received

File photo

School Board member Janet McDonald

referrals for additional services, she said, another 145 tier three students did not receive referrals because they were already receiving counseling. The district also had a number of Baker Act cases this past year: 62 Baker Act incidents from school property, involving 49 students. The total number of Baker Acts involving students, including cases that occurred off school property, was 209. Of the students referred for additional services, in 114 cases, the parents refused services or did not respond to the outside agency that contacted them to set up care, Shott said. Conklin asked why some parents are refusing services. “Of those 114 kids, there’s going to be 114 different reasons,” Shott said. “Sometimes we find, with substance abuse, that the parents will refuse services because the parents are abusing, and they don’t want the light on their family. ... It’s not an issue of being able to afford it, or insurance.” Students who have insurance barriers to seeing a counselor are referred to counselors who work at the school district, Shott said.

Clerk of court agrees to cede more courthouse space Tom Bexley, following the threat of litigation by the county, is offering to give the FCSO additional space to work at the courthouse building.

JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

The county administration and the county clerk of court, Tom Bexley, have been at odds for months over the allocation of space in the courthouse building: The county has asked Bexley to cede more space for the Flagler County sheriff’s operations in the building, and Bexley has said he doesn’t have space to cede. Bexley has now changed his mind, saying he’s willing to give up some space — although doing so, he said, will impact his own operations. “It’s going affect me; I’m going have to move records and people,” he said. “But I think I have a plan that’s going to allow me to serve the taxpayers in this interim period until all our space is returned to us.” The change of direction comes after County Administrator Jerry Cameron, on July 17, sent Bexley a letter stating that the county would prepare to sue him if he did not respond favorably by end of day Friday, July 19, to a request by the county to have a space study conducted on the building, and to abide by its recommendations. The FCSO’s staff has been evacuated from the FCSO’s Operations Center on State Road 100 since June 2018 because of mold there, and has since been divided between the courthouse and the jail administrative building while

the county has new facilities built. But the sheriff has repeatedly implored the county to provide him with more space, saying the agency’s current space limitations are impeding its ability to function. The County Commission on July 15 directed Cameron to instruct Bexley to agree to a space study or face litigation. “It is the opinion of the BCC and County Administration that, while creating additional inconveniences to your operation, the accommodation of the Sheriff’s minimal functional needs can be achieved without unduly impacting the efficient operations of the Clerk’s office,” Cameron wrote in his July 17 letter to Bexley. “Please consider that any alternative to a mutually agreeable resolution will result in a substantial expense, which will ultimately be borne by the taxpayers we serve. ... I ask that you doubt a little of your own infallibility in your opinion that no further accommodation can be accomplished, and join with the BCC, County Administration, and the Sheriff’s Department in forging a long overdue solution to this crisis.” Bexley on Friday afternoon called County Commission Chairman Donald O’Brien and asked to schedule a meeting for Monday, July 22, with O’Brien and Cameron to discuss the matter. O’Brien said the meeting, which was about half an hour long, left him feeling much better about the

likelihood for a resolution. “It was a really good meeting, very productive, and I appreciate the clerk doing that,” O’Brien said. Bexley said that the fact that the county had issued an ultimatum, itself, hadn’t bothered him. “What bothered me was the ‘or else,’ and that was the possibility of litigation,” he said. “If I was a taxpayer, I don’t think I would want two local government entities ... to be suing each other with taxpayer dollars.” He added, “I don’t see this really as a concession; I see it as a continued partnership with the county and with the sheriff.” The county had previously, before Cameron’s July 17 letter, asked Bexley to provide an additional 5,000 square feet of space in the courthouse for the sheriff’s operations. Bexley declined to specify to a reporter July 23 exactly how much space he was willing to turn over, explaining that

he had not yet given the county a formal letter and draft interlocal agreement laying out his terms — he was planning to do so July 24 — and that he wanted to do that before making the details public. But the amount of space involved would be less than 5,000 feet, he said, and would be on the first floor of the four-story courthouse, contiguous with space the FCSO is already occupying, to prevent further fracturing the sheriff’s operations. “We’re not trying to make this difficult; we’re trying to make it as easy as possible,” Bexley said. The space adjustment would also involve adding walls to segregate certain areas, he said, and will contain a deadline for when the arrangement would end. “I, like everyone else that’s been involved with this, am ready for this to be resolved so we can move forward to a possible solution,” Bexley said.

PT SOLUTIONS OPENS NEW PALM COAST OFFICE

“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

Luis Hernandez PT Solutions Physical Therapy first branched into Palm Coast nearly five years ago. The business took over the physical therapy clinic at Florida Hospital Flagler (now AdventHealth Palm Coast). PT Solutions never had a standalone facility — until now. PT Solutions opened up its newest Palm Coast location about a week ago.

The new office is located at 250 Palm Coast Parkway NE, Unit 209, in the Island Walk Shopping Center. “We wanted to make it that much more accessible for our patients,” said Luis Hernandez, PT Solutions’ vice president of operations. “This just allows us to have a larger thumb print in the community.” There will be a strong emphasis on sports medicine at the new office. PT Solutions has been involved with the area’s youth sports for some time now, employing certified athletic trainers at both Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools. The athletic trainers are at the schools Monday through Friday and attend athletic events across all sports, providing acute care to injured athletes. “We want to put the athletes at ease because they’re going to get the best care possible,” Hernandez

said. In addition, the new office also has a concussion center. “It’s extremely important [to have this],” Hernandez said of the concussion center. “We can manage their symptoms appropriately and help them recover.” However, Hernandez said that the overall goal is to provide the same quality care to all of PT Solutions patients — not just studentathletes. “This community is an active community,” he said. “We have quite a few active patients throughout this community, whether their golfers, pickleball players or tennis players. We want the community to know that we’re here to provide for them.” Visit https://ptsolutions.com/ clinics/palmcoast/

BALLFIELD SAFETY

Courtesy photo

The AdventHealth Palm Coast Foundation donated three automated external defibrillators that will be on-site and available at baseball fields throughout Flagler County and at the softball fields at the Indian Trails Sports Complex. AEDs are portable devices that check the heart rhythm and treat sudden cardiac arrest. If needed, it can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. This gift was inspired by Dr. Joe McKinley, a gastroenterologist at AdventHealth. He volunteers as a baseball coach for his three sons, and through that experience, he learned that none of the area baseball or softball fields have AEDs on site.

DONALD O’BRIEN Flagler County Commissioner, District 5

Dear Editor: Someone new develops Alzheimer’s every 65 seconds. Barring the development of medical breakthroughs the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s is projected rise to nearly 14 million by 2050. My mother was diagnosed in April 2013, one day after my father’s funeral. Over the last six years, I have watched this disease slowly take away the person I knew all of my life. When I was younger, my mother worked as a legal secretary. She was hired because she was one of the few women who knew shorthand. Today, my mother can barely form a complete sentence. She no longer knows who I am and has almost zero word recognition. It has been devastating to our family to watch my mother disappear in front of our eyes, all while knowing this disease will one day take her away from us forever. In recent years Congress has made funding Alzheimer’s and dementia research a priority. As we’ve seen from the research presented at Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2019: when we invest in research we gain valuable insights. Please join me and ask U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz to support a $350 million increase in Alzheimer’s research funding at the National Institutes of Health in fiscal year 2020 and to cosponsor the Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease Act. Dear Editor: I would like to clarify a few misstatements that were made by a Bob Jones in a letter you published last week in which I was accused of not being supportive of Sheriff Rick Staly and his great team. While I was quoted accurately, the quote is taken out of context. Sheriff Staly’s letter wasn’t about “mold,” as Mr. Jones states. It was about the county needing to provide adequate space, and my reply about it being a “turn-up-the-heat” letter was in response to the sheriff reminding the Board of County Commissioners to provide that space. He was not referring to mold, and neither was I. By the way, the letter also takes my quote from an article on FlaglerLive, not the Palm Coast Observer. I also want to reiterate that I always have and always will support the sheriff, as well as the men and women of our law enforcement agency. My public record and private record on this are unassailable. Feel free to ask the sheriff or any one of his senior leaders or any of the deputies. Lastly, to put Mr. Jones’ comments into perspective, I think we should acknowledge that he is my opponent in the upcoming election.

Guaranteed Fixed-Rate CD Annual Percentage Yield for a 7-month term with new money deposits of at least $25,0002

Business owner? Ask about our business savings rates.

1. To qualify for the advertised APY, you must enroll your new or existing Platinum Savings account in this offer between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 by speaking to a banker and requesting the special rate. Offer is subject to change at any time, without notice, and is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, DE, FL, NJ, NY, PA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 1.98% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the promotional interest rate period. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes all deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.00%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000, the enrolled account will not be eligible for the Special Rate and will instead earn the applicable Standard Interest Rate for a Platinum Savings account. As of 05/31/2019, the Standard Interest Rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, FL, NJ and NY with an account balance of $0.01 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY); and for a Platinum Savings account in DE and PA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.05% (0.05% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.10% (0.10% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, then-current Standard Interest Rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. 2. Available in-branch only; you must speak with a banker to request the special rate. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 and requires a minimum of $25,000 in new money brought to Wells Fargo. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A penalty for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the special rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. 1., 2. Due to the new money requirement, new accounts may only be opened at your local branch and you must speak to a banker to request the special rate offers for both new and existing accounts. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be: • Combined with any other consumer deposit offer. • Reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable standard interest rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed. © 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. Man, 21, charged in rape of 13-year-old

Bo Sirrine

A 21-year-old Navy aircrewman has been charged with raping a 13-year-old Palm Coast girl he met on the dating website Plenty of Fish. The girl’s mother discovered the man, Jacksonville resident Bo Sirrine, hiding in the girl’s room Jan. 15. When confronted by deputies investigating the crime, Sirrine said he’d met the girl on the dating website Jan. 12, then communicated with her on Snapchat and Google Hangouts before talking with her on the phone and being invited to her house, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office arrest report. He said he’d arrived at her house at around midnight and that she let him into the house through her bedroom window.

He said he’d had sex with her that night after “a few hours of communication and kissing,” according to the report, and had also returned and had sex with her the following night. When he had sex with the victim Jan. 15, the victim’s mother heard them and came into the room, finding Sirrine “attempting to hide on the floor on the opposite side of the bed,” according to the report. He was in his boxers, and the victim was in her underwear. Deputies collected materials from the room for DNA testing. On March 27, a witness provided deputies with a statement in which the victim had admitted to having a sexual relationship with an older man named Bo, who she’d said would also give her massages with oil. June 7, an FDLE crime lab retuned results of DNA testing, showing biological material from two sources, one of which matched Sirrine, according to the report. Sirrine is charged with three counts of lewd and lascivious battery of a victim 12-16 years of age, according to court records. He was arrested June 17.

Man with 19 aliases charged with grand theft auto

Damien Deshaun Dennis

When a license plate reader hit alerted deputies about a stolen 2013 Porsche Panamera from Alabama shortly before midnight July 20, deputies found the car and discovered that the driver had 19 aliases. A deputy found the car at the Daily’s station on Boulder Rock Drive. A man was pumping gas, but stopped and began doing push-ups once he noticed the FCSO patrol car. Deputies identified the man as 40-year-old Damien Deshaun Dennis, who had 19 aliases, six dates of birth and six Social Security numbers. His driver’s license was suspended, and he was on Florida Inmate Release Status for possession of counterfeit tools.

Deputies learned the vehicle was stolen when a man going by the name “Ervin Beiler” purchased it fraudulently. When deputies detained him, Dennis had fraudulent Georgia driver’s license that identified him as “Jessie Alexander Galgano.” Dennis said that he’d bought the car in Jacksonville and the fake ID online. He told deputies that he intended to bring the vehicle back to the owner, but that the owner had told him to sell it for parts. Deputies arrested him. They found marijuana and a shredded ID card in the car. Dennis was taken to jail and charged with burglary of a conveyance, grand theft auto and possession of a counterfeit ID.

FireFlight prevents wildfire FireFlight crews used the helicopter’s ability to travel anywhere in the county in 15 minutes with its 210-gallon water bucket to prevent a wildfire from getting out of control on July 16, according to a news release from the county government

Pilot Todd Whaley, a Florida certified wildland firefighter, was called off a support mission to help firefighters on the ground with two small brush fires in western Flagler County. As he left, he could see a column of smoke to the southeast, and found 3 acres burning near Plantation Bay. Whaley was surprised by the embers and ash hitting the helicopter’s wind screen. He called the Florida Forest Service. Often after lightning sparks a fire, Whaley will direct ground crews to the blaze. In this case, he began dropping water right away. Flagler County Engine 16 responded, but couldn’t reach the fire. Whaley dropped 44 buckets of water — 9,500 gallons — on the fire in about an hour. Though the Florida Forest Service was delayed in its response because of the westside fires, Whaley was able to contain the fire to 9 acres. Engine 16 crew Capt. Richard Bennett credited Whaley and the helicopter with preventing the fire from spreading. “It could have easily grown to 50 acres before ground crews could access it,” Bennett said.

He’s been a resident of Palm Coast for almost four years, but has been familiar with the city and the county for much longer, he said, because his grandmother had lived here since 1996, and he grew up taking childhood vacations in Flagler. One other candidate, Leslie Giscombe, filed to run for the District 1 seat, but has since withdrawn his application.

Palm Coast resident Thomas LeGault has filed to run for Flagler County Commission District 1. That seat is currently held by Commissioner Charlie Ericksen, who was first elected in 2012. LeGault, owner of the advertising and marketing platform Savor Flagler, said he’s noticed a lack of support from the county for local small businesses. It’s one of several issues that spurred him to run. “The county doesn’t really help small businesses,” he said. “My three things are: mental

costs that would be associated with those options. Board member Janet McDonald suggested creating a citizen panel, and board member Maria Barbosa agreed. Conklin suggested the panel should include representatives of various stakeholder groups. McDonald proposed that when candidates selected by the panel meet with School Board members, those meetings should be one-onone — without citizen observers. That would be a departure from the process the board used during Tager’s selection. Tager agreed. “The one-on-ones, if they’re truly one-on-one, I think you’ll get a little bit of a better picture,” Tager said. Board member Andy Dance was concerned about closed interviews from an “optics and transparency” standpoint. Conklin noted that the district has, in the past, held meet-andgreet sessions in which members of the public can interact with candidates. But candidates, she said, had seemed disappointed that they didn’t get true one-onone time with board members. “They wanted to be really comfortable and open,” she said. Board members decided to discuss the issue further at a special 2 p.m. meeting on June 6.

SPORTS 70-year-old golfer shoots 67 on 18-hole round Former PGA teaching professional Gerald Fauntleroy shot a career-low round of 67 to finally break his age of 70. The round, played June 23 at Halifax Plantation Golf Club, consisted of seven birdies, nine pars and two bogies — one being a threeputt. Fauntleroy shot 34 on the front nine and 33 on the back nine. The round included a new points total record of 48 and a points overage record of plus-17, according to Bob Gearst, director of the Sunday Golf Group, where Fauntleroy is one of 70 members.

ason Roberts first got involved with Palm Coast Little League in 2010, but has been around his current group of boys since 2015. They were all 9- and 10-yearolds, and his son, Dalton Roberts, was in the group, as well. He’s watched them grow, and he’s watched them become more skilled. He’s watched them win, and he’s watched them lose. “You really get to know them,” Roberts said. “It’s fun to watch them turn into baseball players. When we first started with them, there weren’t a whole lot of fundamentals going on. But as they’ve gotten older, we’ve gotten into travel baseball, and that’s helped them get better.” That first year together, the allstar team lost the district title to DeLand. But they won the district in 2016 and even went to states in 2017. Last season, they won the district — but got blown out in the sectional tournament. Now in the junior division, which comprises kids ages 13 and 14, Palm Coast’s squad approached the all-star season with a vengeance. There is no district tournament for the juniors, so their first game was at sectionals. They played a controlled game against St. Augustine, a team

they’re familiar with, on July 13 and won 13-10. Later that night, they squared off against Mims. Palm Coast was down 2-1 early and fell behind 5-1 after a threerun inning by Mims in the top of the fifth. “And then we just exploded,” Roberts said. “Everyone was hitting the ball.” Palm Coast scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. Dalton Howell closed the game on the mound, as Palm Coast won 9-5 to advance to the state tournament. “These guys don’t give up,” Roberts said. “They always battle. That’s been the trademark of the team this season.”

Ben Apfelbach throws a pitch during a game.

Outfielder Brayden Hart provided some of the spark in that miraculous fifth inning with a 2 RBI single. After what happened at last year’s sectional tournament, he was surprised his team got to play at states. “If you would have told us we were going to states at the beginning of the season, I wouldn’t have believed you,” he said. “But we’ve got great coaches who are out to help us. They’re making us better baseball players and better people.” States didn’t go exactly as planned, however. Palm Coast lost both of its games on Saturday, July 20, in Merritt Island. Palma Ceia won the first game 15-0, and Viera, the eventual state champions, defeated Palm Coast 9-3. “We didn’t have the results we were looking for, but Palm Coast has come so far the last few years,” Roberts said. “It used to be unheard of that a team would go to states. But you’re starting to see, in baseball and softball, that the level of competitiveness has improved dramatically. There’s been a lot of hard work by a lot of people to make that happen. We are heading in the absolute right direction.”

raeden Kopec was 2 years old when he first learned how to surf. He and his father, Brian Kopec, used to travel up to Matanzas Inlet — back when you could drive your car straight onto the beach — and head out in search of waves. Brian would paddle, and Braeden would cling onto the nose of his father’s longboard. He learned to pop up onto the board by grabbing onto his father’s head, and he started surfing in competitions a year later.

“People thought we were crazy,” Brian recalled. “I had no idea that when I was pushing him into waves all those years ago, that he’d be where he is today.” Braeden, now 13, is one of the most decorated youth surfers in the country. The Hammock Beach resident most recently won his sixth and seventh East Coast titles this past spring, and he competed at the USA Surfing National Championships in California in June. USA Surfing has taken notice of Braeden over the past year and, as a result, named him to the USA Junior Developmental Surf Team.

He was the only boy from the East Coast to be nominated. “It means the world to me,” Braeden said. “This has always been one of my biggest goals. I’m really stoked to make this team.” Braeden’s life has revolved around surfing since he first started competing. “I live for the buzzer,” he joked. His primary coach is four-time world surfing champion and Flagler Beach legend Frieda Zamba. Braeden, who met Zamba four years ago, has flown to Costa Rica, where Zamba lives, about 20 times to train with her. “Sometimes Frieda is his mom,

The Kopecs spent 111 days in hotels last year, according to Braeden’s mother, Rachael Kopec. Braeden is homeschooled, as a result. The long distances can be tiresome, but his parents have never missed a contest. “It gives us a lot of time to be together as a family,” Rachael said. “He really truly wants to be the best he can possibly be. I think that’s really admirable for someone at such a young age who knows that he wants to be successful at what he loves.”

Keeping your pets safe this summer The summer months can be uncomfortable — even dangerous — for pets and people. Follow the Halifax Humane Society's tips for helping everyone in your family stay healthy and comfortable when the heat is on (and even if the power isn't).

If you or a loved one are in need of Rehabilitation after a Hospital Stay, we know your goal is to get Home as soon as possible.

DON’T OVERHEAT NEVER LEAVE PETS IN A PARKED CAR Not even for a minute. Not even with the car running and air conditioner on. On an 85-degree day, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or die.

Our Friendly and Professional Nursing and Rehab staff will get you or a loved one healthy with all the necessary skills you will need to return home. Please Call or Stop by for a Tour Today! (904) 797-1800

TAKE THE TEMP Taking a dog's temperature will tell you if there is a problem. Dogs should not be allowed to get over 104 degrees.

KEEP COOL MORE THAN A FAN Pets respond differently to heat than humans do. (Dogs, for instance, sweat primarily through their feet.) And fans don’t cool off pets as effectively as they do people. PROVIDE AMPLE SHADE AND WATER In heat waves, add ice to water when possible. Tree shade and tarps are ideal because they don’t obstruct air flow. A doghouse does not provide relief from heat — in fact, it makes it worse.

HEAT STROKE SIGNS AND TREATMENT Difficulty breathing, fever, dizziness, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue are some signs of heat stroke. Apply ice packs or cold towels to their head, neck, and chest. Let them drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Take them directly to a veterinarian.

To participate in a full Ironman competition, the athlete has to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles. “For me, triathlon is not just about a race,” Jeff Martindale said. “Triathlon is a lifestyle. He was one of the top five competitors, which qualified him to compete for Nationals in Cleveland, Ohio, in August. Olympic triathlon competitions consist of 0.9-mile swim, 24.6-mile bike and 6.2-mile run. “We have done countless of all the other distances,” Jeff Martindale said. “Triathlon isn’t a one distance thing. Tager said. “So, I really enjoy that part of it, and I always have.” He said he believes that he should be as visible as possible for students, faculty and staff in his role as superintendent. He’s ran in a number of Flagler Schools races since starting in the district, including two at Rymfire Elemetary, two at Wadsworth Elementary, one at Flagler Palm Coast High and one at Belle Terre Elementary.

After lacing up his sneakers, which he wears through about every six months, James Tager runs about four to five times a week, for a total of about 20-25 miles — unless he’s training for a marathon, in which case he runs about 40 miles a week. His pre-race routine is fairly simple: He eats pasta the night before and maybe a bagel in the morning if it’s a longer race. While he doesn’t listen to music during

The superintendent is an avid runner, and with the simple change of his clothes and shoes, he frequents the trails around Palm Coast and Flagler Beach to stay active and clear his mind. James Tager started running track and cross-country in high school in Ohio and never looked back. Now, at age 59, he’s completed two marathons and countless other races. He earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and special education at Flagler College and master’s degree in administration and supervision from Nova Southeastern. In May 2017, he

I love my job, don’t get me wrong. I think if you don’t have a way to kind of get away from the hustle and bustle and everything that you do, you won’t last at your job that long. And this is going to be my 38th year. You have to have some kind of relief.” His passion for running is so contagious that his wife of two years now caught the bug. “His belief in running and health made me think that I could be the same,” Jodi Tager said. “So, he motivated me. We ran on the beach. I started off with a mile, then went to two miles … Everyone struggles in the beginning; you can’t always run a mile without stopping. You have to start somewhere, and, now, I can do a half-marathon.” James Tager said that starting in small increments is the best way to get more comfortable being a runner. “Once you convince yourself that you can do it, it’s kind of limitless; you can do whatever you

For Flagler Beach and Volusia County, he recommends running on the beach during low tide. “This time of year, if we can find shade, it’s really good,” he said. His last day in education will be June 30, 2020, when he’s set to retire at the end of his contract. ‘S’ in summer is for snacks NOTHING SWEETER THAN FRUIT?

MANGO-PEACH SALSA

“I like a few scoops of ice cream on a slice of cantaloupe. Cool for a summer day. I realize it’s ice cream, which has calories, but hey, there’s fruit involved.”

JARLEENE ALMENAS NEWS EDITOR

WAYNE GRANT, Real Estate Editor

I love snacks. That being said, I have been striving in the last few months to better my eating habits by snacking smarter: Fruit, vegetables, nuts, dark chocolate — because, “Yes, you can have chocolate in moderation.” That was my sister’s response when I asked her what her favorite healthy snack was for this column. (Ironic disclaimer: My sister is a dietitian.) In the end, I settled on strawberries and whipped cream. Cut up as many strawberries as you want and give yourself a nice swirl of whip cream on top for a sweet dessert-like snack you won’t feel particularly guilty about indulging in. But, wanting to expand my universe regarding healthy snacks to munch on this summer, I sent out an officewide email asking for help. And my colleagues didn’t disappoint. Here are some examples of what we newspaper folk like to eat to keep us cool, refreshed and full over summer.

“My favorite health snack for me and my kiddo is sliced green apples with peanut butter and chocolate chips on top. I prefer to use the Jiff Whipped peanut butter because it spreads more easily, and mini dark chocolate chips because they’re more of a savory sweet. It’s perfectly sour (apple), nutty (duh) and sweet (chocolate). I love making this dish for us to share because my kiddo likes it as much as I do!” JACLYN CENTOFANTI, Advertising Manager

“My favorite healthy snacks for summer are cotton candy grapes and Rainier cherries. They are both sweet and refreshing! It’s the perfect snack to pack away and enjoy by the pool — something I look forward to every summer. I can’t wait to share this newfound tradition with my children.” ALYSSA WARNER, Staff Writer

Ingredients 2 fresh mangoes, diced 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 medium red pepper, diced (red peppers are sweeter and add great color) 1/4 cup cilantro, washed and chopped 2 fresh peaches, diced 1 cup cooked corn off the cob 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and diced 1 fresh lime or 1/4 cup Lime juice Salt and pepper to taste Instructions Mix all ingredients together. Add the lime juice last. Chill and serve with tortilla chips.

Instructions Cut bananas in half in the middle. Stick a popsicle stick or wooden skewer in the bottom. Place on parchment paper-lined cooking sheet. Drizzle melted chocolate over them. Then sprinkle shredded coconut, nut butter, seeds and/or nuts on them. Freeze for at least an hour before eating.

LEMONY ORZO PASTA SALAD WITH CUCUMBER AND FETA “My oldest daughter, Megan, made this for me a few years ago, and it is one of my favorite recipes. The cucumber and mint make it taste so refreshing and cool for summer. She adds halved cherry tomatoes and sometimes arugala to it to add extra flavor, but it truly doesn’t need it.” SUSAN MOORE, Senior Account Manager

Ingredients 1–1/2 cups dry orzo pasta 2 tbsp olive oil, or just enough to lightly coat the pasta juice and zest of 1 lemon 1 large English cucumber, seeded and chopped 1 tbsp fresh mint, finely chopped 1 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled kosher salt and freshly-ground black pepper, to taste Instructions Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the orzo al dente according to package directions (about 9 minutes). Drain the pasta, let cool for a couple of minutes, and toss with the olive oil, lemon juice and zest, cucumber, herbs and feta. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Serve chilled or at room-temperature. Can be made up to a day in advance and kept in the refrigerator. Recipe by Fork Knife Swoon

AVOCADO TOAST

BROCCOLI SALAD

“This summer, health and fitness has become a cornerstone in my life. After my morning trip to the gym, I like to slab half an avocado on a piece of toast with a sprinkle of paprika, garlic powder, and salt. You could skip out on the paprika/garlic powder and just add salt if you’re worried about extra sodium. To top it off, throw on a fried egg for extra protein deliciousness. A lot of people are wary of avocados because of the carbohydrate and fat contents, but the carbs in the avocado are mostly fiber and the fat is heart healthy! This snack is light and easy to prepare (7-10 minutes, max!), making it my go-to snack for my busy summer days.”

“I am currently addicted to a broccoli salad that I make from scratch. It’s light, fresh and delish! The secret ingredient is a lemon vinaigrette dressing that I buy at Publix.”

CAROLINE SMITH, Contributing Writer

SUSAN MOORE, Senior Account Manager

Ingredients 1 Fuji spple, chopped 1 cup cooked quinoa 1 scallion, chopped 1 large crown of broccoli, chopped 1/3 cup of raisins 1/4 cup of pistachio nuts 1/4 cup of feta cheese Lemon vinaigrette Instructions Mix everything together in a large bowl. Drizzle with lemon vinaigrette and eat!

VEGGIE-TALES “A veggie-based sauce! I love this recipe because it hides the vegetables so well. It’s also super easy to make! The sauce turns out to be a creamy, heavy consistency. You feel like you’re eating Alfredo but it’s all veggies! YUM!” MAUREEN WALSH, Operations Manager

Three ways to make the most of summer produce Clean produce to remove pesticides, wax and soil.

Produce tastes best when enjoyed during its peak season. Before shopping, check produce guides to see what’s at its peak near you. A few easy ways to be sure you’re getting the cream of the crop are to join a Community-Supported Agriculture group, visit a farmer’s market and to simply look for the local label at your supermarket. In a culinary rut? Because CSA members don’t always have the option of selecting the exact items they receive, a subscription is a particularly good idea for those with adventurous spirits

BE SAFE

USE IT UP

In your efforts to feed your family nutritious produce this summer, be mindful that many fruits and vegetables contain contaminants like pesticides, wax and soil on their outer layer. While independent studies show that washing produce with water or bleach solution still leaves behind large traces of pesticides, there is now a better way to protect your family. With just a spray and rinse, Arm & Hammer’s Fruit & Vegetable Wash safely eliminates more than 90% of residue from the commonly used pesticide thiabendazole, when used as directed — four times better than water alone. Made with pure and simple ingredients like Arm & Hammer baking soda, water, salt and lemon oil; and free of harsh chemicals, it’s easy to stock your kitchen with it and make it a part

Don’t let any produce go to waste. Here are five fun uses for fruit and vegetables:  Fruit popsicles: Chop fruit into small chunks and mix with juice and even a bit of honey. Pour the mixture into a popsicle mold and freeze. You’ll have a delicious, healthful snack for later.  Fruit or veggie kebabs: The grill is not just for burgers and dogs. Make veggie skewers using mushrooms, zucchini, green peppers and onions. For a light dessert, grill pears and peaches to be eaten on their own or topped with a bit of ice cream.  Pesto: Go beyond the classic basil recipe to get creative with your pesto sauces. From cilantro to spinach to mint, many of summer’s richest green herbs and vegetables make great stand-ins.  Cold soups: The weather may

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARJORIE!

YOUR TOWN REALTORS LEND ‘HELPING PAWS’ Realty Exchange LLC held its inaugural “Helping Paws” event to raise awareness of much needed funding and supplies for the animals currently being cared for and future care of local dogs and cats, according to a press release. While Jacqueline C. Davis, one of their firm’s staff members, was busy planning its efforts, it had come to their attention that the organization had three air conditioning units that desperately needed repair or replacement, as well as

necessary supplies that needed to be filled. Davis had collaborated with Realty Exchange’s Julie Sabine, broker/owner, and David Petkovsek to get all of their staff — nearly 90 real estate agents — as well as the local community, onboard in a huge effort to collect as much as possible. They were able to collect several hundred items including cleaning and office supplies, dog and cat food and toys. In addition, nearly $1,500 was raised toward the air conditioning repairs.

Marjorie Graham celebrated her 101st birthday surrounded by family and friends on Sunday, July 21, at Christ the King Anglican Church in St. Augustine. Over the past 30 years in Palm Coast, Graham enjoys Christian ministries, quality time with family and friends and reminiscing on her many years of service as a caretaker in Antigua, New York, and in Florida. “Throughout the years I’ve observed that my grandmother lives joyfully, no matter the situation,” said her granddaughter, Tamara Gibson-Alonso. “I believe this, as well as a healthy diet, has impacted her longevity.”

PUBLIC NOTICE

CELEBRATE WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY American Association of University Women Flagler will host a celebration of the 99th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, forever enshrining the right to vote for women. Join the group on Monday, Aug. 26, at the Flagler County Public Library, 2500 Palm Coast Parkway, NW. This free event begins at 1 p.m., is open to the public and will feature members of AAUW Flagler participating in a memberauthored skit, “Women Won the Vote: How Did THAT Happen.” As AAUW members give voice to incredible warriors of women’s suffrage, hear of their struggles and victories as they waged a 72-year-long-battle to secure the right to be heard at the ballot box. The skit’s narrator will surprise many in Flagler County as she is a local suffragette who never realized the chance to vote. Immediately following the skit, join AAUW Flagler and the Flagler County Public Library as a display, featuring women’s suffrage books, will be presented. The display will be available for one month in hopes of encouraging readers to learn more of #HERStory. In anticipation of the 100th Anniversary of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment next year, AAUW Flagler is planning a series of events leading to Women’s Equality Day in 2020. The group will be sponsoring an essay contest for seventh and eighth grade students and for students in ninth to 12th grade.

s a 20-inch hammerhead shark was reeled in on the dock at Waterfront Park, all the kids ran over to see the unique catch. Palm Coast resident Jared Dawson earned the “Largest Catch” award for the hammerhead, which he took a photo with before it was released back in the Matanzas River. The inaugural Youth Fishing Derby was held by the city of Palm Coast Parks & Recreation Department the morning of Saturday, July 20, at 150 Waterfront Park Road. Twenty youth participated in the derby, with their families. City of Palm Coast Youth Recreation Supervisor Michael Smith said this event was an opportunity to get more visitors at Waterfront Park. “We don’t have a bunch of things for families necessarily, so this was something kids could do with their parents or grandparents or the whole family could come out,” Smith said.

Two Palm Coast artists will soon have their work featured at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in an upcoming exhibit called “Synchronicity,” presented by Beaux Arts of Central Florida. Marilyn Leverton and Peter Cerreta will each have one piece of art on display. Leverton, a resident of Palm Coast for the last 14 years, has been an artist for a quarter of a century. Her favorite medium is sculpture — clay, specifically — though she paints from time to time. Her piece on display is called “A Moment in Time.” “I call it ‘A Moment in Time’ because a butterfly would only rest for a moment,” Leverton said. “... Life is fleeting, so you just have to enjoy every day.” Cerreta’s acrylic piece in the exhibit is called “Well There’s Always Next Saturday Night.” He retired to Palm Coast in 1988 after owning a gallery in New York for 17 years and working in education as an art teacher, guidance counselor and administrator for 40 years. “When I was at college at Pratt, it’s very interesting that the painting teacher told me, ‘You’ll never be a painter,’ so I
