Commercial burglary. Someone alerted a property controller that the lights were on inside his commercial property, and that the front door appeared to have been pried open and its brackets broken.

Nothing was missing. A deputy found a wrench by the front door, and was advised by the controller that it had been removed from a toolbox on a truck outside the building.

Elsa soaks Florida The storm wobbled west, but 26,000 Floridians have lost power.

Tropical Storm Elsa remained poised to strike the largely rural Big Bend region by late Wednesday morning and bring the potential for flash flooding to rivers across North Florida.

As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, about 26,000 Floridians had lost electricity because of the storm. But Gov. Ron DeSantis said during a morning news conference that the outlook was much-improved from earlier forecasts that showed the system gaining strength as it moved from the Caribbean through the Gulf of Mexico.

“I think one of the things we’re going to be looking at in the days ahead is, what’s that (the storm) going to do for the rivers and some of the flood risks,” DeSantis said during the news conference at the state Emergency Operations Center. “That area of Florida has been very saturated.”

At 8 a.m. Wednesday, Elsa was about 31 miles west of Cedar Key, or 115 miles northwest of Tampa, in the gulf. The system, which weakened after growing to hurricane status on Tuesday, was moving north at 14 mph and packing 65 mph sustained winds.

After Elsa makes landfall, the National Hurricane Center anticipated the storm to turn northnortheast late Wednesday afternoon and move rapidly across Georgia, the Carolinas and midAtlantic states through Thursday.

DeSantis said more than 10,000 workers were prepared to respond to power outages, and the state is ready to provide assistance where needed.

The system “wobbled” to the west overnight on Tuesday, minimizing impacts to Tampa, DeSantis said. However, DeSantis cautioned people not to become complacent.

Flagler County officials want renters to know they could be eligible for up to 15 months of assistance – paid directly to the landlord – through OURFlorida. com. Some utilities assistance is also available.

The program focuses on lowincome renters whose household income is at or below 80% of the Area Median Income, which varies by county. It prioritizes renters with income at or below 50% AMI and/or families who have experienced unemployment within the past 90 days.

“Landlords should coordinate with tenants to determine eligibility for the program and to submit the application,” said Health and Human Services Director Joyce Bishop. “Once the application is approved, the landlord will receive payment directly.”

OUR (Opportunities for Utilities and Rental Assistance) Florida Program is Florida’s federally funded emergency rental assistance relief program to support residents and business as they continue to recover and rebuild.

Residents who rent their homes are eligible if they: Earn an income at or below 80% of the AMI; and Have qualified for unemployment, experienced a loss of income, incurred significant costs or faced financial hardships due to the recent public health emergency; and Are at risk of losing their home or are living in unstable or unhealthy conditions.

New law bars anonymous code enforcement complaints Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on June 29 signed into law Senate Bill 60, which bars code enforcement officers from investigating anonymous complaints.

All code enforcement reports must include the complainant’s personal information, including name and address, as of July 1.

The law does not apply if “the person designated as a code inspector has reason to believe that the violation presents an imminent threat to public health, safety, or welfare or imminent destruction of habitat or sensitive resources.”

reedom Fest and the city of Palm Coast’s annual fireworks show lit up the sky on Saturday, July 3.

Flagler Broadcasting’s Freedom Fest event at the Flagler Executive Airport featured a fly-by parade and static displays of vintage and modern military aircraft, with some adventurous visitors opting for rides on a Huey, Cobra or a T-6 Texan.

Aircraft at the event included a Tico Belle C-47 World War II troop/cargo aircraft, a B-25 Mitchell World War II bomber, a BT-13 Valiant World War II basic trainer, a T-6 Texan World War II advanced trainer, a Florida Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter, a UH-1 Iroquois “Huey,” an AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter and many others.

The event resumed for 2021 after being canceled due to COVID-19 in 2020.

Evening performances that were scheduled included Eli Mosley, “Soul Fire Mo-Town” and the “Slippery When Wet” Bon Jovi tribute band, while scheduled opening ceremonies featured the singing of God Bless America and the National Anthem by jazz artist Linda Cole and a welcome from airport Director Roy Sieger and the Board of County Commissioners.

After Freedom Fest, visitors headed to Central Park in Town Center for the city of Palm Coast’s fireworks show, featuring a 20-minute p y r o te c h n i c show by Santore, with more than 1,000 shells.

Divided council debates killing Danko accuses Holland, Observer, Bevan FiberNET, votes to preserve it Former Mayor Holland Councilman Ed Danko called the city’s fiber network a waste of money, but city staff said it makes money.

Palm Coast’s high-speed fiber network — known as FiberNET and used by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and by Flagler Schools as well as the city government for internet access — narrowly survived a July 6 City Council meeting after a city councilman proposed ending it.

A major discussion of the fiber broadband network was not expected at the meeting: FiberNET was on the agenda only in the form of a consent-agenda contract that would let the city call in two firms on an as-needed basis for emergency repairs.

City Councilman Ed Danko referred to the network as a boondoggle.

“This is really, really important for our city to operate. ... What you’re saying is if something were to take it down, you wouldn’t want to have it repaired.”

“I have a question: Why are we still wasting money on this?” he asked at the meeting.

“On the infrastructure that our city runs on?” replied Councilman Nick Klufas, a software engineer who’s long championed the FiberNET system.

“On fiber,” Danko replied.

“Isn’t that what AT&T and Spectrum should be doing? Isn’t that what SpaceX is now doing with satellites? This is a losing proposition.”

Klufas replied that FiberNET is run as an enterprise fund — it makes its money by charging customers — and has made back the millions the city initially invested in it many times over, when accounting for payments from the customers and for savings to the city government because it doesn’t have to pay a private company for the internet connections.

Danko said the city shouldn’t be competing with private enterprise, and that new technology might make fiber obsolete.

Klufas said the city decided to build FiberNET’s 50-mile fiber backbone over a decade ago because the private providers at the time weren’t serving Palm Coast adequately.

“The reason we’re competing against private industry here is that they failed to provide a product and service,” Klufas said.

That service, he added, is a necessity for many local businesses.

In comments near the end of the July 6 City Council meeting, City Councilman Ed Danko said that former Mayor Milissa Holland had resigned because she was under an ethics investigation facing criminal allegations — not, as she’d said, to care for her ill daughter, who’s had complications following a liver transplant.

Danko said he’d gotten his information in a “confidential, off-the-record briefing from senior law enforcement” that had occurred several weeks before.

“You folks may not know this, but Milissa Holland did not resign

because of her daughter. The briefing I received — she resigned because there were criminal charges in the ethics complaint that was filed against her by our former compliance officer, Jay Maher,” Danko said. “Nine days later, [former City Manager] Matt Morton resigns.”

The Palm Coast Observer was not able to independently verify Danko’s allegations concerning Holland. The Ethics Commission does not release information on potential investigations until probable cause is found. Holland said the Ethics Commission deals with civil, not criminal, matters.

She called Danko’s accusations “a complete fabrication.”

“That is ludicrous, blatantly false and now libelous,” Holland said. “Mr. Danko is clearly trying to deflect from the issues and investigations he has brought upon himself. I have stated my reason for stepping down. I am at

my daughter’s side, right where any loving parent would choose to be.”

Danko had made his comments about Holland in the context of complaining about Morton, whom he held responsible for a Palm Coast Observer story that revealed last week that Danko had been under a city HR investigation for allegedly berating city staff.

The Observer had learned about that investigation through a public records request.

Danko referred to the Observer story as a “political smear campaign” perpetrated in election season. Danko, a campaign adviser for mayoral candidate Alan Lowe, referred to the Observer as “fake news,” adding that its publisher, John Walsh is backing rival candidate David Alfin. The paper had printed Walsh’s endorsement of Alfin last week.

Asked by fellow City Councilman Eddie Branquinho to elaborate on the accusations against Holland, Danko declined to do so, but said he’d tell the source he’d spoken with that Branquinho wanted to be briefed as well.

Danko said that once a new mayor is seated, Danko would make a motion to fire City Attorney Bill Reischmann and Interim City Manager Denise Bevan, who’d kept the HR investigation concerning him open. Bevan said she’d turned the investigation over to an outside party to avoid any conflict of interest. Danko said he would not speak to Bevan or Reischmann and would only communicate with them through email.

A dirt road less than 200 feet long has stymied Palm Coast’s City Council for months. Now it has a solution — maybe.

The council first heard about the road — and some residents’ desire that the city close it to keep highspeed traffic out of their neighborhood — in February.

The council initially voted to close the road, which is used as a cut-through between County Road 325 and Seminole Woods Boulevard.

But at the next meeting, when the council was scheduled to hold its final vote on the closure, a larger group of residents showed up and said they wanted the road kept open: Closing it would lengthen their commutes.

The council tabled the topic, asking staff to bring back more information. The council tabled it again at a meeting in April.

At a meeting July 6, the council tabled Slow Way again, but this time, it has a plan: City staff will work with Flagler County staff to place signs directing truck traffic and through-traffic not to use the road, and the city will wait

WETLAND MITIGATION Palm Coast will buy $143,000 in wetland mitigation credits to resolve two conflicting easements — an FPL easement and an overlapping city conservation easement — near the city’s Lehigh Trailhead.

The City Council had approved the placing of a conservation easement on the parcel in 2007 as part of permitting requirements for construction on nearby Fire Station 25 and the Palm Coast Tennis Center.

But part of the city easement overlapped an existing FPL easement.

Once it discovered the conflict, the city contacted the St. Johns River Water Management District, which said that the city could buy mitigation credits elsewhere. The credits will be used to protect land at a mitigation site in Flagler County.

It was City Councilman Nick Klufas’ idea to try the signs before making a final decision on whether to close the road.

“If we were to do signs,” Klufas said, “then by the time we have a new mayor in office, we would be able to look at this and see whether or not the signs alone were able to contribute to a decrease in the traffic on Slow Way, to a point where both sides are satisfied.”

Councilman Victor Barbosa asked city staff about the possibility of adding guardrails at Slow Way’s intersections to protect neighboring yards and a street sign that’s been repeatedly knocked flat by careless drivers.

A city staff member said a guard rail would cost more than putting up a gate.

Councilman Eddie Branquinho said a resident had contacted him saying that if the city closed Slow Way, the resident wanted a road near him closed too, for similar reasons.

Branquinho said. “The minute we close one [road], how are we going to tell this person no?”

Danko proposed waiting to decide until the city’s next mayor is seated.

The council ultimately returned to Klufas’ suggestion to move forward with signs for now and revisit the issue later.

It voted 4-0 unanimously to table the proposed closure.

Palm Coast is joining communities around the state in an agreement on the dispersal of settlement money from government litigation against opioid manufacturers.

The agreement, known was the “Florida Memorandum of Understanding” or “Florida Plan,” determines where money from the opioids settlement will go and how it will be used.

“Participation in the Florida Plan by a large majority of Florida cities and counties will materially increase the amount of funds to Florida and should improve Florida’s relative bargaining position during additional settlement negotiations,” a Palm Coast city staff summary states.

The money is expected to be used to help resolve the opioid epidemic.

City staff recommended that the City Council approve a resolution bringing the city into the Florida Plan, and the council did so, voting 4-0 in favor during its July 6 meeting.

How to research local political candidates before you vote Dear Editor: One way to cut through the noise, the misinformation, and the candidates’ rhetoric is to do your own research. THIRD GRADE READING SCORES DIP Data released by the Florida Department of Education shows Flagler County third grade reading scores plummeted by 9% from 2019 to 2021.

The data, found on the Chamber’s Flagler County Scorecard webpage, indicates only 59% of third grade students in Flagler County can read at grade level, compared with 68% of third grade students that could read at grade level in 2019.

“The impact of COVID-19 on our education system is the most likely cause of these low test scores. However, the biggest concern I have is that our scores plummeted by 9 percentage points, which is the 12th largest drop any county experienced in the state. The reason third grade reading scores is important is because it’s the one of the first times students are compared to their peers,” said Greg Blosé, president and CEO of the Palm Coast-Flagler Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Blose continued, “When you look at how Flagler County’s third grade reading scores performed compared to other counties in our region, we see that St. John’s County’s third grade reading scores didn’t drop at all, Volusia County’s dropped by 4%, and Putnam County dropped by just 2%. Flagler’s 9% reduction is the largest of any county in Northeast, East-Central and Central Florida.

The chamber wants our school system to perform at high levels and to be competitive with other school districts in our region, which is why we are tracking this data. Finally, we know Flagler Schools has developed a summer reading program for those students who were unable to earn a sufficient score on reading assessments this school year, which is a step in the right direction.”

Despite the reduced number, Flagler’s score of 59% is still higher than Volusia County, which earned a 54%, and Putnam County, which earned a 39%. St. John’s County boasted the best number in the state with 78% of third grade students passing their English-Language Arts FSA. The statewide average is just 54%. the road. I’m also a realist to know that sending a work crew out weekly to pick up trash is probably unattainable. However, when you see the same litter for nearly a month, it concerns a taxpayer.

Flagler County Tourism promotes visitation to the area, and we also have alternatives other than I-95 when visiting Flagler County; it’s called “Scenic A1A.” However, this litter is a complete embarrassment to the county.

What’s worse is the number of government vehicles that travel A1A who drive right by that carpet countless times per day!

District Judge Robert Hinkle issued a preliminary injunction stopping a controversial law that, in part, seeks to prevent large social-media platforms from banning political candidates from their sites. DeSantis pushed lawmakers to pass the measure this spring.

“The legislation now at issue was an effort to rein in social-media providers deemed too large and too liberal. Balancing the exchange of ideas among private

speakers is not a legitimate government interest,” Hinkle wrote in a 31-page order.

Under the law, companies that remove political candidates from platforms could face fines of $250,000 a day for statewide candidates and $25,000 a day for other candidates. The law also would require companies to publish — and apply consistently — standards about issues such as banning users or blocking their content.

Restaurant owner charged with molesting girl

Car theft suspect arrested after welfare check

Man charged in theft of $23,000 in equipment

The owner of the Jimmy’s Hang Ten restaurant in Flagler Beach has been charged with molesting a girl over whom he had custody.

Deputies arrested 60-yearold suspect James Harris after the 14-year-old victim used her cell phone, placed on a nightstand, to capture video of Harris walking into her room naked at night and touching himself sexually while she was in bed pretending to sleep.

Harris also used a cell phone to take pictures or record video while in the victim’s bedroom.

The victim told her father, who contacted the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office on July 1.

Deputies reviewed the video, which showed what the girl and her father had said that it would.

Under Florida law, it is generally illegal to record someone without their consent, but a 2015 amendment makes an exception for juvenile victims who are recording evidence of sexual abuse.

It’s the second recent local case in which a child victim has video recorded evidence of sexual abuse.

Deputies arrested Harris on July 3 and confiscated his cell phone for forensic analysis.

“I want to commend the victim for not only coming forward but also for turning the tables on her abuser by capturing him committing the offense,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said.

“This man was a trusted figure in his victim’s life. ... I’m glad we were able to get him before he hurt his victim further.”

A 25-year-old Palm Coast man was arrested June 28 for stealing pickup truck at a 7-Eleven store after the truck’s owners left the keys in the ignition while shopping.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a stolen vehicle at the store at about 11:30 a.m. At the same time, a property manager at Beach Village Apartments, located behind the 7-Eleven, reported a suspicious person with a description matching that of the suspect who stole the tuck.

The property manager was able to identify him as William Demetrius Kitts.

At about 12:30 p.m., the owner of the stolen car called the dispatch center and said he found his truck: His boss had noticed it sitting empty.

The FCSO responded to search, but then received a call from a father stating his son came running into the home with a knob from a car stereo, saying people were after him, and talking to the television, and needed to be Baker Acted.

The son — Kitts — was asked if he wanted to harm himself or others. He said no, but then quietly said, “I bet you’re here because of the gray truck.”

He then said he was in a predicament and needed to take the truck. The knob Kitts had in his possession was missing from the victim’s pickup.

Kitts was arrested and taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. He is charged with Grand Theft Auto and being held on $2,500 bond.

The theft of more than $23,000 in construction equipment was solved in less than 24 hours as Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies worked with Volusia County deputies to arrest a suspect after the victim tracked the thief down on social media and arranged a meeting with him.

“I’m thankful that working together with the victims and VCSO we were able to return the stolen property quickly,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “To any thieves out there who think they can come to Flagler County and steal, think again. We work with agencies across the state and have the technology to find you, and you will go to jail.”

The FCSO responded July 1 to a construction site behind the roundabout of U.S. 1 and Matanzas Woods Parkway about a vehicle burglary.

Deputies made contact with the first victim, an American Civil Construction employee who said that upon arriving at work he discovered that several items had been stolen from the company trailer.

The estimated cost of the missing items was $23,080.

A second victim said that a cut-off saw valued at $1,800 was removed from their white work trailer.

The victim said he found the side door to the trailer open, with the locks cut off.

Deputies retrieved surveillance footage, and it showed a white male operating a white Ford pickup entering and

leaving the construction site overnight.

The FCSO identified the driver as James Perkins.

The first victim then called the FCSO again and said that he’d made contact with Perkins on social media.

The victim told FCSO that after speaking with Perkins, he had convinced him to meet at the Sunoco gas station on U.S. 1 in Oak Hill to return the stolen items.

FCSO requested mutual aid from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, which responded to the meeting and detained Perkins.

When questioned by FCSO deputies, Perkins said that he was involved with the theft of the construction property and that he took the items because he “needed money.”

Perkins added that he had an unidentified friend named “E.J.,” from DeLand, who was in the truck with him while they were at the construction site.

This is not Perkins’ first encounter with law enforcement: Perkins was on probation for a 2018 arrest for armed burglary and grand theft.

Perkins was arrested and taken to the Volusia County Jail.

He is charged with Burglary of an Unoccupied Conveyance, Trespassing on a Construction Site, and Grand Theft over $20,000.

He is held on no bond. He will be transferred to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility in Flagler County.

Florida sees speeding trend The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and its division of the Florida Highway Patrol are calling on all Florida motorists to slow down to put the brakes on an alarming trend in drivers reaching dangerous speeds on Florida’s roadways.

Last month, speeding violations issued to drivers for going 50 mph or more over the speed limit reached a concerning alltime high of 238.

Since 2012, speeding violations issued in Florida for going 50 mph or more over the speed limit have increased year over year.

The number of violations issued in 2020 represents a 267% increase over the number issued in 2012.

From 2019 to 2020, these violations grew by 30% — the most in any one year.

“The trend we are seeing in the number of these dangerous speeding violations is very alarming. It underscores the need for all motorists in Florida to take their driving privilege seriously and to remember that the posted speed limit is not merely a suggestion – it is mandatory to keep everyone safe,” said Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Terry L. Rhodes. “Given that historically we see a high number of these violations during the month of July, we are calling on all Floridians to slow their speed to save lives this summer.”

In Florida, the speed limit will never be higher than 70 mph.

Flagler County is inviting the public to attend the Transfer of Command ceremony and installation of Fire Rescue Chief Michael Tucker at 2:30 p.m. July 9 at the Emergency Services Building, 1769 E. Moody Blvd., Building 3, Bunnell.

He will fill the shoes as the permanent replacement of Don Petito, who retired nearly a year to the day of Tucker taking charge.

The city can also use the fiber network to incentivize businesses to move to Palm Coast by offering them internet service, Klufas said. That form of incentive provides a large cost savings to the recipient at minimal cost to the city, he said.

Private internet providers, he added, could tap into the existing fiber backbone and then build out the last mile to homes, and sell internet to residents and businesses for a lower cost than they’d be able to offer if they had to create the whole 50-mile fiber backbone themselves.

City Attorney Bill Reischmann noted that the agenda item was about maintaining the existing network, not expanding it.

He suggested the council determine the consequences of not maintaining the network.

“We shut this thing down and end it, that’s the consequences,” Danko said.

“And then the sheriff loses all internet connectivity?” Klufas said. “The school [district] no longer has internet connectivity? All of the private ISPs that we partner with, they also are no longer be able to operate?”

“They’ll have to go buy new service,” Danko said.

“That is very poor risk management —” Klufas said.

“I don’t need a lecture from you,” Danko interjected, cutting Klufas off before Councilman

City Councilman Ed Danko referred to the network as a boondoggle, while city staff said the network has made money, not lost it.

Eddie Branquinho, serving as acting mayor, asked the councilmen not to speak over one another.

When Klufas motioned to approve the contract, no one seconded his motion, and it failed.

“There is no ISP to call that will repair us,” Klufas said. “This is really, really important for our city to operate. ... What you’re saying is if something were to take it down, you wouldn’t want to have it repaired.”

He added that there are thirdparty ISPs on the network, and the city is responsible for providing a certain level of service.

Reischmann asked city staff if the city had contractual obligations it wouldn’t be able to meet if it didn’t approve the maintenance contract. A staff member said that it does — chiefly, a contract with the school district.

Councilman Victor Barbosa asked city staff if it was true, as Klufas had asserted, that the fiber network has made back more money than the city has put in.

A city staff member replied that it has.

The council voted 3-1 to approve the maintenance contract, with Danko dissenting.

Codes of conduct add ‘Smart sensors,’ moment of silence

lance now also states that schools may use “smart sensors,” stating that the sensors may detect “vape, smoke, THC, abnormal sounds and other safety related issues.” The sensors were piloted at one of the district’s high schools this year and will be expanded to other campuses, said John Fanelli, the districts coordinator of student supports and behavior.  The threshold for thefts that are defined as a “petty act of misconduct” has increased from $300 to $750. Petty acts of misconduct are not required to be reported to law enforcement.  A long state-required added section on school discipline addresses drug sales, violence against school staff, bullying and sexual harassment, the making of threats and the bringing of weapons to school, and the potential penalties for those various violations. It requires that parents receive prompt modification of natural emergencies or certain crimes, including homicide, weapon possession or use, and sex offenses.  Student ID cards will now include the number for statewide crisis and suicide hotlines.  In accordance with a new state law, school principals must require first-period classroom teachers to set aside 1-2 minutes as a daily moment of silence.

This year’s student codes of conduct for Flagler Schools include new language to reflect a number of changes in state law and local policy.

Here’s a summary of the major ones:  A section of text has been added in the section of the document on parents and student rights adding language addressing the “Parents Bill of Rights” approved by the Legislature in its last session. “... Parents have the right to access and review all school records related to the minor child,” the added language states.  The section addressing criminal investigations at schools has new language stating that a student who commits a misdemeanor will be allowed to receive a civil citation or take part in another prearrest diversion program, rather than being expelled or arrested.  The section on search and seizure adds state-required language that students and staff are entitled to protection from sex discrimination under Title IX, that “substantiated allegations of discrimination will not be tolerated” and that students who allege discrimination by another student can do so via their school’s grievance procedure or complain directly to the Title IX Coordinator.  The section that notes that schools use video surveil-

Flagler Schools’ substitute teachers lag behind their colleagues in neighboring counties in terms of pay, but the Flagler County School Board is considering raising their pay to bridge the gap.

The board is scheduled to vote on the proposed increase at its next regular board meeting.

Local subs haven’t had a pay raise in close to 15 years, and that makes it hard to find subs, Flagler Schools Chief HR Officer Jewel Johnson told School Board members at a workshop.

The current pay rate is:  $9.66 hourly or $70 a day for a sub with an associates degree  $11.72 hourly or $85 a day for subs with a bachelor’s degree  $12.41 hourly or $90 daily for substitutes who have a master’s degree or are retired Flagler County teachers  $25.52 per hour or $185 daily for contracted temporary teachers who have a teaching certificate in the area they’re teaching or a bachelor’s in the area they’re teaching.

The proposed pay increase would bring that to:  $15.03 hourly or $109 a day for a sub with an associates degree  $17.10 hourly or $124 a day for subs with a bachelor’s degree  $17.79 hourly or $129 daily for substitutes who have a master’s degree or are retired Flagler County teachers  $25.52 per hour or $185 daily — no change from the current pay — for contracted temporary teachers.

A graduate from Flagler Palm Coast High School, Oslyn Bryant has been a part of the Reality Program for 10 years and was awarded the Dr. Marilyn Trigg Price scholarship for $1,000 and also received a $3,000 scholarship from the AACS. She believes her passion makes her stand out from the crowd. She wants to own an art studio one day.

Oslyn enjoyed being a part of the Youth Black History Reality Program because it allowed the youth to project their voices, find role models, and learn their true history.

“The program helped me to learn about my own people, my ancestry,” Bryant said, “It’s something a lot of African American kids should be able to experience because understanding who we are as black people is important.”

Bryant hopes to teach others that you should never be ashamed of your blackness. Have passion and excitement for being who you are — any type of you is OK, she said.

She will be attending Daytona State College, for business and art classes. To the members and committee of the Reality Program and AACS, Bryant said, “Thank you for this wonderful experience of growing up black and a woman, empowering young black women such as myself.”

A graduate from Matanzas High School, Maya Felton has been with the Reality Program for four years and received a $3,000 scholarship AACS. She believes her optimism makes her stand out from the crowd and wants to pursue a teaching career to educate children with knowledge and love.

Felton has enjoyed being a part of the Youth Black History Reality Program because it’s allowed her to express herself creatively and be surrounded with people she loves.

“The Youth Reality Program allows young black minds to express themselves,” Felton said. “It gives us a chance to learn about who we are and be who we are.”

Felton hopes to teach others that no matter what your dream is you can achieve it, to be kind, and to love yourself fully. She will be attending Arizona State University, majoring in elementary education, and will be on the track team.

Morgan Lee, a graduate from Flagler Palm Coast High School, has been with the Reality Program for three years and received a $2,000 scholarship from AACS. She believes her determination makes her stand out from the crowd and wants to pursue a career as a forensic psychologist.

Lee has enjoyed being a part of the Youth Black History Reality program because it helped her meet new people and allowed her to participate in something that was impactful.

“You can learn a lot from the program,” Lee said, “I’ve always wanted to set a good example for my brothers and to other young people so they can expand their knowledge.”

Lee hopes to teach others to fight for what’s right, to reach your goals, and never let anyone shut you down. She will be attending Daytona State College to finish her associate degree and transfer to Florida A&M University, majoring in Criminology. “Someday I will be Dr. Morgan Lee,” she said. “Why? Because I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.”

The play, Neil Simon’s “Rumors,” is a farce set in a residential area of New York. Ken and Chris Gorman arrive at the home of their friend Charley Brock, deputy mayor, and his wife Myra for their 10th anniversary party.

However, the house is sealed shut, Myra and the servants are nowhere to be seen, and Charley has apparently tried to shoot himself. As the other guests arrive, Ken and Chris have to maintain the charade while taking care of Charley, who has passed out in his upstairs bedroom. It all comes to a head when the police arrive.

Audition dates are 1 p.m. Saturday, July 17, and 1 p.m. Sunday, July 18, in the back lounge of the theater. Signs will be posted. Casting five women and five men, all ages (20+), races, genders, shapes, and sizes. You will be asked to read from the script (no need to memorize). Scripts will be available at the auditions.

The play will have nine performances: Sept. 16-19, 22-26.

Please wear a mask as you enter and when cannot properly social distance (mask will not be worn for production or during actual audition). Doors open 30 minutes early. Plan to arrive early to fill out an audition form.

Headshots and resumes are not required, but always appreciated.

hen Micayla Cronk arrived at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska, she was a bit star-struck.

The seven-time high school state swim champ and the most decorated high school athlete in Flagler County history was competing in her first U.S Olympic Swim Trials June 13-20.

“It was a huge stadium. There was a light show. The pool was all lit up,” Cronk said. “You walk around, you see a lot of Olympians. It was an entirely different experience. I’m very grateful I got to go.”

And though the 2021 Flagler Palm Coast High School graduate did not accomplish her main goal of improving her times in her three events, she was pleased with the results.

“I didn’t drop any time, but I gained a lot of experience, which was amazing,” she said.

The highlight, perhaps, was winning her heat in the 100-meter freestyle.

“That was another goal I went in with. I wanted to win a heat,” she said. “It was awesome to finish, touch and look up at the (giant video screen above the pool) and

see yourself up there.”

Cronk finished 24th overall in the 100, tied for 30th in the 200-meter freestyle and completed her week with a 60thplace finish in the 50 freestyle.

Her first event of the week was the 200 free and she was so nervous and hyped up that she swam the first 50 meters at near worldrecord pace to take the early lead.

“I completely died on the last 50,” she laughed.

Yet she still finished tied for third in the heat.

Cronk got to walk past and warm up with several Olympians, many she’s idolized. It was all a surreal experience, she said.

“I got into the pool, Simone Manuel was in my lane. She swims in my events. I grew up watching her.

“I was looking at her stroke, the dynamics of it,” Cronk said of Manuel, who won two gold and two silver medals at the 2016 Rio Games. “I was seeing what I can do, just in the moment. Her stroke is really powerful.”

Cronk also got a chance to talk with her future college coach, the University of Florida’s Anthony Nesty, who had been the Gators’ head men’s coach and will now lead the women’s team as well.

him in person, so it was very nice, especially at a big meet,” she said.

After the Olympic Trials, Cronk and her family went on a week’s vacation in Colorado, where she did a lot of hiking.

Back home now, she has returned to training, which means daily trips to Oviedo to practice with her swim team, the Blue Dolfins, coached by Charlie Rose.

The pool is about an hour and 15-minute drive from her Palm Coast home, she said. She drives to practice six days a week for morning practice. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the team also has afternoon practices during the summer.

But the long drive and the twoa-days are “100% worth it,” she said.

“Charlie Rose is one of the greatest coaches I’ve ever had,” said Cronk, who has been swimming competitively for about 10 years. “I immediately clicked with him. On top of that it’s an amazing swim team. Everyone’s really supportive. I can count on coming (home) with a smile on my face.”

Cronk has one more competition coming up before she moves to Gainesville in August to begin her college career.

She has three years to prepare for her next opportunity to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team in 2024 and make a dream come true. All in all she was pleased with her first trip to Omaha.

“I’m happy with it. You can always do better as an athlete, always push forward,” she said.

“I’m ready to get better, continue to train hard, get where I want to be. I’m happy that I went and got to enjoy the experience and to get an overall feel for the meet.”

Councilman Ed Danko said he agreed with Barbosa that the city needed more businesses. But Danko said that if it were his neighborhood and he had a choice between homes nearby or industrial use, he’d prefer homes. He voted with the majority.

In accordance with the changes approved at the meeting, the development will no longer be designated as a master planned development.

Instead, it will consist of single-family residential and preservation zoning, with up to 450 single-family homes.

The previous proposal would have had 134 single-family homes, 214 multifamily units and 350,000 square feet of commercial space on the 146-acre parcel.

The all-single-family-residential plan is expected to create a lower impact on traffic, water and sewer than the earlier, mixed-development plan, but also a higher demand on schools and parks, according to a city staff document.

Palm Coast has renamed a north-south connector between Seminole Woods Parkway and Sesame Boulevard. The section of road, previously known as Citation Parkway, will now be considered part of Sesame Boulevard.

Dr. Neil Finkler will serve as chief clinical officer for AdventHealth’s Central Florida Division, which includes Flagler, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Volusia.

This is the first time AdventHealth has named a chief clinical officer who will be responsible for the seven-county region.

Finkler will help to guide nearly 6,000 physicians and advance practice providers.

Finkler is board certified in both obstetrics oncology and gynecologic oncology, has served in multiple leadership and teaching positions at AdventHealth, Boston University School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and the University of Central Florida College of Medicine.

Gregory and Patricia Rose, of Norfolk, Virginia, sold 85 Avenue De La Mer, Unit 1001, to The Vicki H. Shearer Revocable Trust for $1,745,000. Built in 2006, the condo is a 4/3.5 and has 3,070 square feet.

It sold in 2019 for $1,149,000.
