Denise Bevan, Palm Coast’s chief of staff over infrastructure, will be the city’s new interim city manager.

Bevan takes the place of City Manager Matt Morton, whose resignation was announced on the city’s official website on May 27 and followed the May 18 resignation of Mayor Milissa Holland. The City Council approved the appointment of Bevan to the interim manager position by a 4-0 vote at its June 1 meeting.

Morton’s contract requires

30-day notice for resignation, but the council voted 4-0 to waive that requirement: Morton will stay on only as long as it takes the city to finalize a contract with Bevan.

Bevan, a longtime city of Palm Coast employee, was previously the city’s administration coordinator and senior environmental planner. The proposal to appoint Bevan was put forward by Councilman Victor Barbosa, who wanted Morton out quickly.

“I think the city’s ready to move on,” Barbosa said.

Councilman Ed Danko was interested in the possibility of hiring Ronald McLemore, a former Winter Gardens city manager who’d contacted the city and offered to take the position.

really need to be a pilot,” Danko said, “and I would hate to see us put somebody in a position who’s never done the city manger job, where they could possibly fail.”

But other council members wanted to hire from within.

Councilman Nick Klufas raised the possibility of appointing the city’s fire chief, Jerry Forte.

The council asked Forte to speak before making its decision.

But Forte backed Bevan, saying she was qualified and noting how familiar she is with the city’s Strategic Action Plan.

“There is nobody in this city that is more intimate with that program than Denise Bevan,” Forte said. “She brings a lot of ability to work with everybody within the organization. ... I think what we need now is some calm, some stability.”

Acting Mayor Eddie Branquinho asked to hear from Bevan.

“I’m here to serve the city of Palm Coast in any capacity necessary,” Bevan said. “I would ask to better understand the terms and to work with each council member and our amazing team on what that looks like. With that, thank you and yes.”

Morton was hired in 2019.

Weeks before his resignation, he’d been granted a $9,000 raise and received an average of 3.84 out of 5 on his annual performance evaluation.

Twelve patients and eight staff members have COVID-19 at Flagler Health and Rehabilitation, Florida Department of HealthFlagler Health Officer Bob Snyder reported May 28 on WNZF’s “Free For All Friday.”

Of the 20 total cases, four resulted in hospitalizations over the past few weeks.

How did the outbreak happen?

Snyder said that only 24% of the staff have been vaccinated.

“It’s clear what is happening: They are bringing COVID from the outside, because of their lack of belief that vaccination is the way to go,” he said. “But what’s happening is, they’re getting residents sick. This is all preventable.”

When “Free For All Friday” host David Ayres observed that Snyder appeared to be upset about the situation, the normally cheerful Snyder responded, “I’m upset about it — you bet.”

A call to Flagler Health and Rehabilitation Center was not returned.

Snyder said the DOH has been receiving calls from family members of patients at Flagler Health and Rehabilitation, asking for advice or help.

“Please find out if your loved one has been vaccinated, because that should be your No. 1 priority,” Snyder said. “That’s all I can say: Please get vaccinated.”

Snyder said demand for vaccines has dwindled countywide.

So far, 57% of Flagler residents have been vaccinated, and 84% of those over 65. Flagler is about 10th in the state for vaccination rate.

For anyone who is nervous about getting sick due to the second shot, Medical Director Dr. Stephen Bickel said that it’s best to get the second shot. Any adverse reaction will be temporary and is well worth the risk in exchange for being protected long-term against COVID-19.

esidents carrying U.S. flags and wearing red, white and blue came together May 31 in Palm Coast and Bunnell to mark Memorial Day in the largest local-government-led ceremonies held in Flagler County since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Palm Coast City Councilman Nick Klufas opened Palm Coast’s 8 a.m. gathering at Heroes Memorial Park, reading the names of local service members who died in the line of duty and are memorialized in the park’s granite monument, and recounting the numbers who have died in the United States’ past and current conflicts.

“Today is the day we take time to share our eternal gratitude to each and every one of them,” Klufas said.

Klufas, elected in 2016, is the longest-serving council member who was available to lead the city’s event: Mayor Milissa Holland recently resigned, while Vice Mayor Eddie Branquinho is out of the country.

In his remarks as the city’s guest speaker, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, a Green Beret and National Guard colonel, recalled the courage of the men who’d fought and died under his command. He asked veterans to continue serving their communities.

“Those of us that lost brothers and sisters need to personalize it for so many Americans out there that don’t know what’s been sacrificed,” Waltz said.

Waltz, in speeches at both the Palm Coast ceremony and the Flagler County ceremony held at 10 a.m. at the county’s Government Services Building in Bunnell, called for a national service requirement in which young people would serve in the military, the Peace Corps or other volunteer initiatives, such as working in national parks or tutoring at inner city schools. The proposal garrnered applause at the county ceremony.

Waltz said that serving one another is what makes American great.

“You do it with people who don’t look like you do, who don’t come from the same backgrounds — that’s how you learn to understand each other and appreciate each other,” he said.

The county’s ceremony was highlighted by a speech by Medal of Honor recipient Melvin Morris, who, as an Army staff sergeant serving Vietnam in 1969, led soldiers across enemy lines to retrieve a fallen commander, destroying an enemy force that had pinned down his battalion.

Morris spoke of seeing the flags that had been raised by the enemy taken down and replaced

by American flags carried by U.S. soldiers.

“These men are willing to give their life for that symbol, because the symbol means freedom — freedom for us all,” Morris said. “There’s no greater love than a man who lays his life down for another.”

The ceremonies included the Pledge of Allegiance, benedictions, the laying of wreaths, the singing of the National Anthem and God Bless the USA, and, at the county ceremony, last roll call — the recitation of the names of local veterans service organization members who have died in the past year.

The DAV will be having a general membership meeting 10:30 a.m. June 8, at the VFW.

Waste Pro warned over breach of contract with city The city is seeking out additional haulers in case Waste Pro doesn’t resolve the issue promptly.

Effective immediately, the city of Palm Coast has submitted a letter to Waste Pro of Florida Inc. for its noncompliance with the current contract for residential solid waste and disposal services.

This written notice to Waste Pro on May 26 advises of breaches of contract for failure to provide the contractually required services, and advised Waste Pro that it has seven business days to resolve the breach.

Waste Pro has informed city staff that the issues with collection range from lack of employees to not having enough hours in the day.

Palm Coast City Manager Matthew Morton recognizes that “Garbage collection is an essential service for residents of Palm Coast, and the city is dedicated to providing timely and consistent service to residents.

The collection lately has been at unacceptable levels and we will not sit idly by and let this continue. It is a priority to provide quality service to our residents, and Waste Pro is now on notice that the service level must increase or further action will follow.”

of deficient services and worked diligently to remedy issues related to missed collections above the allowable limits, missed routes, streets and neighborhoods, routes not being completed daily, and failure to have adequate personnel to perform the services contractually required. The city has also worked to address an increasing breakdown in communication from Waste Pro on missed collections and uncompleted routes. This is evident by the city’s customer service department receiving an influx of calls, emails and Palm Coast Connect cases.

The city has fined Waste Pro a total of $29,280 from Jan. 1, 2021, through May 25, 2021, for its failure to comply with the terms of the contract with the city. Additionally, city staff have been assigned to inspect daily routes to ensure that waste collections are completed and to document the areas that were missed or incomplete.

To assist in tracking missed or incomplete routes, the city has encouraged its residents to report missed collections to PalmCoastConnect.com for areas that Waste Pro does not sufficiently service during a normal daily route.

At least 4,565 complaints have been submitted over the past six-months, even after an April 1 memorandum was received by the city from Waste Pro’s vice president indicating that service would return to satisfactory levels.

In a move that could save Flagler Schools $1 million in teacher salaries in the coming years, the School Board approved on May 25 an incentive for eligible teachers to retire early: a bonus of 18% of their salary, in addition to the $6,000 standard bonus.

More than nine out of 10 teachers approved of the plan, according to Flagler County Educators Association President Katie Hansen. School Board member Janet McDonald called the plan a “win-win” and, like others on the School Board, was relieved that teachers were accepting of the offer despite one imperfect stipulation — that the benefit only applies to teachers who declare sometime between May 1 and June 30 their intention to retire.

That means that if teachers told their administrators in January, for example, that they were going to retire, they are not eligible for the added 18% benefit — only the $6,000 bonus.

Finance Director Patty Wormeck said eight teachers who declared early will miss out on the extra money, which would be $14,400 for a senior teacher making $80,000 per year.

“While the number is small, if you have given 32-35 years of your life, and you’ve missed this cutoff by a handful of days, that, to me, is inexcusable,” said School Board member Colleen Conklin, who was the lone dissenter in the 4-1 vote to approve the deal. “We should have figured it out to look at the unintended consequences.”

The added benefit to retire early was also offered last year.

Wastewater treatment plant capacity to double An $18 million expansion of Palm Coast’s Wastewater Treatment Plant No. 2 will double the plant’s capacity from 2 million gallons per day to 4 million gallons per day.

“We need that capacity with our current projections for development and growth within our city,” said city engineer Alex Blake. “This … should basically hold us over for a good 8 to 10 years.”

The expansion, with construction expected to end in January 2023, will be funded by a 20-year, $18.15 million State Revolving Fund loan with 0% interest.

Palm Coast’s City Council voted 4-0 at a June 1 meeting to apply for the loan. The proposed expansion will be presented to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection before the city puts it out to bid in July.

The expansion is part of the city’s five-year capital plan.

City Manager Matt Morton said he list had its origins in 2015, under the tenure of former City Manager Jim Landon.

Klufas agreed with Danko that there should be a notification process, “So if you’re on this list, you know, and you have the ability to appeal.”

Municipalities, Klufas added, should be transparent.

Councilman Eddie Branquinho agreed while emphasizing the value of warning workers about potentially dangerous residents, noting that one man

had said after a recent council meeting that he’d put a gun to the head of any city workers who showed up at his house.

“I think that should be noted,” Branquinho said.

The council voted 4-0 to stop using the current list and create a new, more open process.

Palm Coast’s “naughty list” will no longer be used: The Palm Coast City Council voted 4-0 at its June 1 meeting to stop using the city’s list of difficult citizens as council members apologized to the public for its existence, saying they’d been unaware of it until it was revealed in a Daytona Beach News-Journal story last week.

The list had been created in 2016 under a former city administration, on the advice of a former City Council member who believed that city staff deserved a fair warning before dealing with members of the public who were known to their fellow staff members to be engage in harassment or threatening conduct.

It had only a few dozen entries. Those who were on it weren’t made aware that they were, and there was no process through which they could remove their names.

“I realize that this was put together possibly with good intentions to protect our city workers: I think we do have to protect our city workers,” City Councilman Ed Danko said.

“But a secret list is no way to do that. It’s like something out of East Germany, as far as I’m concerned.”

Government should not be putting people on lists without giving them a chance to defend themselves, he said.

“If we have a list, we need to have some form of due process,” he said.

Danko made a motion that the city stop using the list.

Dear Editor: I remember when everybody who was running in this last election said they were going to be fiscally responsible with our money. Then we turn around and spend over $5 million for a racquet center.

Then they ask us to cut back on our water usage, but yet they approve all these permits to build all these homes which is going to use more water. To me, this does not make a lot of sense.

Our roads need to be widened to handle all the traffic that we already have. The stripes on the roads dividing the highway from right side to left need to be repainted in most of the town.

The School Board’s Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club needs to be remodeled. No one wants to help them, but yet we can spend $5.75 million on a racquet club.

I personally think we need to either remove some of those people on the council that are not in our best interest. Then we need to freeze all pay raises and bonuses until our road conditions can meet the traffic in this town.

And if they’re not willing to do this, from the mayor on down, they need to step down and let someone do it that can handle the job.

Why build a bridge over State Road 100?

Dear Editor: News Editor Jonathan Simmons recently reported on Flagler County’s decision to build a $9.48 million bridge

over State Road 100 near Colbert Lane. This would be the proverbial bridge to nowhere!

There are few businesses, few within a reasonable distance, and no sidewalks on the south side of State Road 100, so what would be the purpose of the bridge? I am sure there are many more meaningful projects we can spend our hard earned tax dollars.

Don’t forget that Lowe tried to renounce his citizenship Dear Editor: As some may recall, Alan Lowe lost the Palm Coast mayoral election to Milissa Holland last year likely in part as a result of the surfacing of problematic information about Lowe’s past. Because Holland has resigned and a special election will soon be held, Lowe is again running for mayor. It’s important to revisit what was uncovered then so voters now are aware of the information and can factor it into their special election decision for Palm Coast mayor this July.

Last year, just weeks before that mayoral election, Flagler County court records were

discovered, most of which consisted of documents filed

by Lowe himself. The records painted a very concerning self-portrait of an individual with a bizarre philosophy and political leanings radically counter to the foundations our country is based upon. The records included Lowe declaring himself a Sovereign Citizen, disavowing citizenship and allegiance to the U.S., and contending he was not subject to laws and taxation.

Curiously, his filed documents also show he attempted to legally change his name to “Alan S. Lowe, Ambassador of Christ” and as such, he claimed he would have immunity for violations of U.S. laws.

The records also include threatening letters to IRS agents who were attempting to collect taxes Lowe did not pay resulting in tax liens and property foreclosure. The letters threatened both civil and criminal action against individual agents.

It’s noteworthy that the actions of the Sovereign Citizen movement have been defined by the FBI as domestic terrorism with roots in white nationalism and antisemitism.

Some movement adherents are also active in various financial crimes and bank fraud.

Last year, Lowe, when the Palm Coast Observer confronted him with these findings, his confusing and likely disingenuous response had to do with some “spiritual awakening” issues, “having problems in his head” and a “temporary mindset.” Previously, however, he tried to deny his Sovereign Citizen status despite what the court records show.

Lowe, who is 60 years old, never voted until 2020 when his name was on the ballot.

We need fewer potholes, not more parks, in Palm Coast Dear Editor: We have an election for mayor of Palm Coast coming up on July 27. We have elected three mayors thus far, so we should have enough experience to get it right this time.

If you encounter any of the serious candidates, I would suggest you ask them two questions: 1. Do you want more parks or fewer potholes? We are over whelmed with parks and becoming overwhelmed with potholes. I have lived here for over 34 years; during that time I have visited one park and that was to see what we were getting for over $10 million.

I was not impressed; in fact, I thought we were robbed!

During those 34 years, I have driven eight gas-powered motor vehicles and two motorcycles for over 250,000 miles — usually over good roads that are now becoming bad roads. Needless to say I’m voting for fewer potholes !

2. Are you a Democrat or a Republican? If the person admits to being a Democrat, look them in the eye and back away, turn and run. We don’t know if this condition is contagious, and, if it is, there is no vaccine.

The month of May has been recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month; this month we are focusing on reducing the mental health stigma.

It has been a tremendous journey this school year. I can attest for many it has been exhausting, exhilarating, confounding and breathtaking. It seems that this school year has taken its toll on all of us, causing us to experience many twists and turns and sometimes feeling like things are totally out of control, creating feelings of being lost and alone, stressed and overwhelmed.

These feelings alone can lead to many social stresses that can cause mental health issues, and you know what? That’s OK. Yes, it’s OK to have mental health

issues.

Mental health is a human experience, and having a mental health issue is not a destination but a forward continuum with endless possibilities.

Remember the old saying that April showers bring May flowers.

A period of discomfort can provide the basis for a period of happiness and joy. Always remember that it is OK to have storms and even dance in the rain, and know that after the rain the sun will always shine. When the sun shines, new beginnings occur.

They become like the flowers we see in the May sunshine as they rise and blossom, giving us all the sweet-smelling fragrance of love, joy and happiness that you possess inside.

Our goal this year is for the faculty, staff and students to have a 100% awareness about the mental health and social work support available on campus. If you are in need of services, please reach out to your guidance counselor or call the Student Community and Engagement office at 386-4377526.

We are here to support you during this time and throughout the school year.

HOW TO HELP REDUCE THE STIGMA OF MENTAL HEALTH: EDUCATE YOURSELF AND OTHERS Learn the impact of mental health and how to help those in need to access it and reduce the stigma associated with getting help.

TALK OPENLY ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH Be honest and open about our pain and shortcomings instead of pretending that they do not exist.

BE CONSCIOUS OF LANGUAGE Sometimes individuals keep feelings and emotions to themselves because they can’t find the language to describe it. Be careful to not use mental health issues as adjectives. I have a name and my issues do not identify me.

ENCOURAGE EQUALITY BETWEEN PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH Your mental health is equally as important as your physical health. They impact one another: Poor mental health usually leads to poor physical health and vice versa.

Palm Coast teen arrested after making threats on social media A male student at Flagler Palm Coast High School was arrested for making threats to another student on social media.

“In Flagler County, we do not take threats like this lightly,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “I hope this young man will learn from this experience that making threats to hurt someone is not how you solve disputes.

Parents, I am again asking that you be the Sheriff in your home and monitor what your children are doing on social media.

Educate your kids on the proper way to resolve arguments. This will help them today and in the future as adults. When our deputies show up at your door it is too late and saying you don’t remember what was said or that you were only joking is not going to prevent you from being arrested.”

Two stolen vehicles recovered The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office was alerted on May 26 of two stolen vehicles in Flagler County that were reported stolen from Jacksonville.

Shawn Paul Vasquez and Heidi Tindol were apprehended and were found to be in possession of cocaine and other drugs. A few hours later, David Green and Deryl Bush were arrested in possession of a stolen vehicle, after leading law enforcement on a dangerous car chase into St. John’s County, requiring the assistance of FireFlight, the St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol.

“We were very lucky that no one was hurt because of their reckless behavior and disregard for other drivers,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “I want to thank the SJSO and FHP for their assistance in getting these guys off the road before their reckless behavior resulted in serious injuries. Let this be a lesson to anyone who thinks they can run

from law enforcement, you can run but you can’t hide. We will work together with neighboring agencies and you will be caught and you will go to jail.”

License plate readers added to Town Center The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and the Town Center Community Development District have announced a private/ public partnership enabling the purchase of license plate readers for Town Center. The public/ private partnership is valued at over $101,000.

Sheriff Rick Staly has been working on a public/private LPR partnership with Allete Inc. & Douglas Development for one year. Allete and the Town Center CDD will be paying all costs associated with the LPR installations while FCSO will fund the monthly connection costs.

Town Center CDD approved funding the project at its CDD Meeting on Friday, May 14, after a presentation by FCSO Sgt. Mike Lagana and a representative of Vigilant Technology. This was the last step needed to

“As Town Center continues to attract high wage jobs and residents, we wanted to ensure Palm Coast remains safe for our visitors and residents,” said Jeff Douglas, of Douglas Development. “The Sheriff’s Office has had huge success with LPR’s and we thought this would be a great partnership.”

LPRs are cameras that are either mounted permanently at a location or on mobile trailers. When a car passes by the camera, the device scans the license plate and runs the tag through state and national databases. If the tag matches one that’s in the database, the system alerts an analyst and deputies in the field. Deputies can also input tags into the database if they’re searching for a vehicle.

Utilizing LPR technology allows for proactive policing, apprehension of suspects and fugitives, recovery of missing

persons and stolen vehicles, and helps prevent crimes before they occur. FCSO began implementing LPR’s in 2018 and in 2020 alone, LPR “hits” resulted in 93 arrests, recovering 51 stolen vehicles, 15 fugitives arrested, 33 stolen tags recovered and 9 missing persons found.

“We appreciate the partnership with Allete, Douglas Development and the Town Center CDD to enhance the safety and security of the Town Center area,” said Staly. “This technology revolutionizes crime-fighting in Flagler County by not only helping solve crimes, recover stolen property and help us locate fugitives, but it also aids in the recovery of missing individuals in the event of an Amber or a Silver Alert. When lives are on the line, every second counts.

We’re glad to have another tool to advance our proactive and real-time crime-fighting techniques.”

For many Americans, Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer and a long weekend to relax and enjoy barbecues with friends and families. But for members of the U.S. Military Gold Star Families, Memorial Day is so much more.

“I, too, was one of those people, years ago, that thought the same thing. I thought Memorial Day was time for the barbecues, time for the parties,” said Cathy Heighter. “And it wasn’t until after losing my son that I began to understand it all. I began to understand what ‘thank you for your service’ meant. I began to understand what Memorial Day meant.”

A Gold Star Family is the immediate family member(s) of a service member who has lost his or her life in the line of duty. The title dates back to World War I when military families displayed service flags featuring a blue star for every immediate family member serving in the Armed Forces. The star’s color would be changed to gold if the family lost a loved one in the war. In 1928, Grace Darling, a Gold Star Mother, founded American Gold Star Mothers.

“The loss that these Gold Star Families have experienced is profound,” says Palm Coast Councilman Nicholas Klufas. “The best that we can do as a community is to recognize that these families

An abandoned, unsafe, unsanitary, dilapidated motel has already been given a new breath of life as its new owner — 2251 S Old Dixie Hwy LLC (also the property’s address) — has paid the fines and back taxes accrued by the previous owner, and has removed dumpsters of trash. The swimming pool has been drained.

“We are encouraged by how much has been accomplished in very short order,” said County Administrator Jerry Cameron.

“The closing agent sent checks totaling about $70,000 to cover all of the fines and back taxes owed Flagler County and the Florida Department of Health (Flagler).

This bodes well for the working relationship for the new owner.”

The previous owners were brothers Ajmal M. and Zubair M. Zulali. Many Flagler County departments — such as Growth Management, Code Enforcement, Administration, and the County Attorney’s office, as well as the Florida Department of Health-Flagler — worked together to make the property safe.

Eventually, the county filed a lawsuit to compel the brothers into action “to abate the nuisance,” or the buildings would be demolished. They opted to sell.

“It was a masterful collaboration by the team to accomplish this,” Cameron said.

Flagler County earlier this month entered into an agreement with the purchaser, signed by managing member David Shebiro, to ensure the conditions that pose a danger to human life and a hazard to the safety and health of the community don’t persist.

The three-page document outlines the past problems through “whereas” clauses and details corrective actions that must be made by the purchaser by Aug. 20,

“Given the new owners performance so far, we have no reason to believe it will come to this,” Cameron said.

The agreement stipulates the following will happen by June 3:  Remove all litter and debris from the property  Drain or repair and secure the pool  Erect a fence to prevent the access of trespassers to the dilapidated motel site.

It also stipulates that the purchaser will satisfactorily pass an “all rough” inspection to include the following by Aug. 20:  Electrical rough  Mechanical rough  Second rough plumbing  Framing The county has not dismissed the lawsuit, neither has it asked that a hearing date be set. Should the court schedule a hearing before Aug. 20, the county will seek a continuance to allow the new owner to timely complete its obligations.

“We want to give the new owner — who we believe is operating in good faith — the time to make the necessary repairs and improvements,” Cameron said.

att Graifer, known professionally as The Young Professor, doesn’t like making five-year plans.

“It’s unrealistic,” he said. “If you asked me five years ago, I would have never thought any of this would be happening.”

Graifer is quickly becoming a well-known voice in the local entertainment world, including his new role as emcee of the Daytona Tortugas games.

He was first recognized for his voice when he was in junior ROTC, he said. “They pulled me out and told me I would be the commander for our group,” he said. Later his team entered a national competition, and he took second place.

That was 2004. After JROTC, Graifer was the keynote speaker at his masters graduation, where he gave a speech titled, “Your Playlist for Success.” Embracing public speaking, he became a college professor in exercise sciences — until he was laid off.

By this time, Graifer had a wife and four children to provide for.

To make extra money, he started hosting trivia nights in the area.

Now, it’s a Palm Coast tradition: Every Tuesday at 7 p.m., for the last four years, The Young Professor has been hosting trivia nights at The Brown Dog, as well as other local bars, restaurants and events. While doing these trivia nights he was always told that his voice sounded great and he should get into sports announcing.

“As a simple question to myself, my wife and I wrote down things we wanted to do as a couple, in our home, and in our professions,” he recalled.

“I wrote down on that piece of paper: ‘start announcing in wrestling or sports.’”

Graifer has been a fan of pro wrestling for years, and the wrestling gods repaid him. A few months after he wrote his goal on that paper, an ad was posted by the wrestling school in Daytona Beach. The ad said, “We’re looking for a new ring announcer. You need

to be available on Saturdays, and you can’t suck.”

Graifer was available on Saturdays. He hoped he wouldn’t suck.

“I submitted a tryout video to the local wrestling company, and within days I was asked to come and try out,” he said. “I showed up that Saturday; I walked in 15 minutes before the show, and they gave me the card with all of their names, and they told me to go and get their information, their names and their cities. I did the gig, and afterwards I got paid, which I wasn’t expecting, and they asked me to keep coming back.”

For three and a half years now, Graifer has continued to go back.

This has led to traveling to more shows and trying out for larger, nationally recognized wrestling companies.

Graifer is now a full-time teacher at Matanzas High School, which is where his wife also works.

This season, he is the emcee for the Daytona Tortugas, a minor league affiliate with the Cincinnati Reds.

“This is a massive opportunity for me,” he said, marveling at his good fortune, with apparently a gift for public speaking but no formal training in it. “I’m just some guy that grew up poor, in a not-so-awesome town in New Jersey, moved here, and didn’t really have a plan. I have just found ways to continue using my voice to entertain people.”

HOW TO ASK GOOD INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Matt “The Young Professor” Graifer has learned some trick for asking good questions, as he has gained experience doing live interviews with pro wrestling stars at regional and national conventions.

1. Walk in overprepared: Do your homework by Googling the interview subject, and prepare more than you think you will need.

2. Fill in the gaps: Don’t just ask the same questions as other interviewers have asked. Contribute something new to the body of knowledge about your subject, through your interview.

3. Interview before the interview: Avoid embarassing moments by reviewing the material with the subject before you go live.

FLAGLER HUMANE SOCIETY HAD NIGHT DROP CAGES UNTIL 2011. HERE’S WHY IT STOPPED. Originally intended for good Samaritans who found an animal at night but could not locate owners, night drop cages have ultimately morphed into dumping grounds for owners who didn’t want to face the questions asked by staff and certainly didn’t want to be asked to make a donation toward the care of their animal, according to FHS Director Amy Carotenuto.

Flagler Humane Society maintained night drop cages from its inception until about 2011.

With night drop boxes, the staff’s mornings would consist of counting the number of animals abandoned in the cages.

Are they all OK? Anyone sick?

In the late 1990s, animal shelters across the country began removing night drop off cages after animals had frozen to death, been stolen by night time shoppers or injured by other animals. At the same time, shelters were becoming more pro-active to make sure animals would have a safe place to come. Shelters extended their hours of operation (FHS is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.). CHICK-FIL-A GIVES TEENS $20,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS Chick-fil-A Palm Coast Operator Glen Efford spent his afternoon Friday, May 21, surprising eight Chick-fil-A team members with Remarkable Futures Scholarships.

The team members were awarded giant checks that totaled $20,000.

The Palm Coast Public Works Department’s Touch-A-Truck event drew an estimated 4,000 residents Saturday, May 22, to an equipment showcase featuring multiple agencies from the Flagler County region.

The turnout even surprised organizer and Palm Coast Public Works Lead Benny Cope.

“I had goosebumps,” Cope said.

“I was so happy and ecstatic.”

Though a chance for children to play with the real-life version of what resembles their toys at home — dump truck, bucket truck, fire engine or helicopter — was an opportunity many families couldn’t pass up.

“National Public Works Week is what spawned Touch-A-Truck,” Cope said. “Touch-A-Truck meant the world of what we do.”

More than 30 vehicles and equipment were stationed along Park Street in Town Center.

They don’t know what it does — they don’t get to get inside of it,” said Public Works Manager Marvin Calderon. “An event like this gives them the opportunity to get inside of the equipment, touch it, play with everything inside there and they go home asking questions and that’s what piques their interest.”

The Public Works team plans to triple the event’s size in 2022.

Homebuilders plagued Flagler Health+ Village to break ground in July by material shortages

With costs of materials skyrocketing, along with an increased demand on a broad scale for construction projects, delays have unavoidable in the homebuilding industry, according to a press release from the Flagler Home Builders Association.

During the pandemic, many factors contributed to the increased demand. Interest rates have been low, and with so many people forced to stay home, many are renovating their homes “and fixing things they had put on the back burner,” the release states.

On Jan. 12, 1958 she married, Manuel, the couple started their family in Portugal and immigrated to Newark, NJ in 1968 for a short time. August of 1969 they moved their family to New Bedford, Mass until retiring to Florida in January 1999. Maria worked as a seamstress for many years and took care of her mother for 7 years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, and taking care of her grandchildren. Maria had a sense of humor bigger than life, she was never serious and always making jokes, making others laugh. She was also very hardworking, a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Her family was her number one priority. Maria also enjoyed spending time with her late Jack Russell, Sabrina, who she shared a very special bond with.

She is survived by her husband, Manuel Casqueira; daughters, Dalia Maiato, Merica F. Cerverira (Mark S.); grandchildren, Jason Laureano, Michelle Laureano, Bianca Maiato, Austin Marques and Leah Marques. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosa Laureano.

A prayer service was held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home with Deacon George Murati officiating. A visitation followed the service until 3:00 pm.
