For the first time, local Democrats elected a Flagler County woman as one of Florida’s national convention delegates.

Democratic caucuses in Florida’s Sixth Congressional District chose Teldra Jones, of Palm Coast, supporting candidate Joe Biden, to join the Florida national convention delegation.

Jones retired after serving 26 years as a U.S. Air Force chief master sergeant. She currently works for Wabtec Corp as a senior supply chain manager.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday, May 21, approved Flagler County’s Vacation Rentals Safety Plan, allowing bookings based on the guidelines set forth by the plan laid out by the Tourism Department and implemented in accordance with CDC standards.

“We want to build confidence in travelers and industry employees that their health and safety is a top priority,” said Tourism Director Amy Lukasik.

“And, of course, we are happy for our businesses that they can re-open in at least a limited capacity.”

Flagler County enacted a burn ban May 23.

“I spoke to Anthony Petellat — district manager for the Bunnell District of the Florida Forest Service — who concurred with our burn ban,” said Fire Rescue Chief Don Petito. “Volusia County has a burn ban in place already. There are four fires in Flagler now and several more in surrounding counties.”

“We recognize the priority of keeping both our residents and visitors safe and are confident that these guidelines would allow for a safe reopening of short-term vacation rentals in Flagler County,” Lukasik said.

Residential trash pickup increases 50%, as people spring clean Waste Pro, unincorporated Flagler County’s solid-waste contractor, has seen an approximate 50% increase in the volume of residential trash and yard waste. Appliance pick up has especially grown, from a typical 50 appliances collected per week in Flagler County, to the most recent tally of 157.

“It’s being reported all across the country that the volume of residential trash has spiked,” said Flagler County General Services Director, Heidi Petito.

“While people are staying ‘Safer at Home’ they’ve had more time to spring clean, they have stimulus checks for appliances and projects, and I think we’re all generating more trash from frequent disinfecting. Waste Pro has been doing an exceptional job keeping pace.”

In spite of the disruptions caused by the pandemic, household trash collection has continued without interruption.

For unincorporated areas of Flagler County, that means regular trash is collected twice weekly.

Green yard waste is picked up once each week, as are recyclables. Collection of large household items, like appliances or furniture, are scheduled by calling the office.

Collections were uninterrupted by Memorial Day. Waste Pro has instructed staff to adopt protocols which — in an abundance of caution — assume that all surfaces could be contaminated

by COVID-19, including waste,

cart handles, trucks, and door handles. Collection personnel are maintaining social distance of six feet, wearing gloves and washing and sanitizing their hands often to minimize risk.

“Our office in Bunnell has been working diligently to keep our crews safe and healthy,” said Misty Schneider, Government Affairs Manager of the Northeast Florida Division of Waste Pro. “They’re our unsung ‘essential’ heroes. We very much appreciate the community’s support as we forge our way through these new challenges.”

Mahogany Boulevard repaving to begin early June Residents of Daytona North who have been watching the preparatory widening work of the nearly 30-year-old Mahogany Boulevard can take comfort that that repaving is scheduled to begin early in June.

The total project costs of $1.9 million are being paid through Florida Department of Transportation grants.

The 3.2-mile project – County Road 305 to Water Oak Road –includes roadway widening, milling, and resurfacing. The final constructed roadway will provide for 11-foot travel lanes, 3.5-foot paved shoulders, and a foot of sodded stabilized shoulders.

The initial Mahogany Boulevard construction work was completed in the 1990s.

Palm Coast, Flagler County hold virtual ceremonies for Memorial Day

The county government’s ceremony began at 9 a.m. May 25 and included Last Roll Call, the reading of the names of local veterans who died during the past year.

Admiral Mark Boensel, US Navy (retired), said that Memorial Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the principles service members died defending — individual freedom and self-determination.

“We often hear that freedom comes at a price; we’ve seen the truth of that statement since our country’s founding,” Boensel said in the county’s ceremony.

“In every American generation, there are those who pick up the banner of liberty and pay its due. ... I know that in the course of grief and in the quiet reflection of thinking about loss of a precious and irreplaceable life in military service, there’s almost inevitably a question, spoken or unspoken: Was it worth it? I want to offer that, if you consider a successful and worthwhile life as one of consequence — a life that uplifts other and makes the world a better place — then it definitely was and continues to be worth it.”

County Commission Chairman David Sullivan, a Navy veteran, said it’s important on Memorial Day to recognize service members’ sacrifice, even though the way the community does so must be different this year.

“We are challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is our fervent desire that we approximate what we would normally do to reflect on the enormity of the sacrifice of the courageous servicemen and women who paid with their lives to preserve the freedoms afforded by the Constitution,” Sullivan said. “They protected family, friends and fellow Americans in their time and for generations to come: Whether they fought from muddy trenches in Europe, or patrolled the jungles of Vietnam or the mountains of Afghanistan, we honor them all.”

Hair salons and barbershops reopen, focusing on sanitation Local shops are stocking up on sanitizer and gloves and limiting the number of people inside at once.

When Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that salons and barbershops would be allowed to reopen Monday, May 11, local salons were ready. At The Glam Studio in Palm Coast, owner and stylist Diana Costa — who’d closed two weeks before the state required it, just to be safe — had stocked up no sanitizer and gloves and reopened the shop.

“We’ve all been so eager to get back in there and do what we love,” she said in an interview after the reopening. “We’re all just getting

‘We honor them all’ alm Coast and Flagler County’s Memorial Day ceremonies have traditionally been held at Palm Coast’s Heroes Memorial Park and outside the county’s Government Services Building, where residents have gathered to hear solemn presentations, the singing of the national anthem and the playing of taps.

This year, COVID-19 restrictions prevented the gatherings, but local governments still put on ceremonies, streaming them over the internet or broadcasting them by radio May 25.

“Instead of standing side by side in remembrance of our service members who’ve given their lives for our country, we must instead honor them in our hearts,” Palm Coast Mayor Milissa Holland said in the city’s video ceremony, played at 8 a.m. through the city’s Facebook page. “... Those of you who hold dear the memories of deceased loved ones, please know that your fellow Palm Coast citizens honor our departed service members not just today but every single day, as they have always been the very essence of bravery and integrity in this community.”

Palm Coast’s ceremony included a virtual walk through Heroes Memorial Park, the singing of the national anthem by Jill Vanderoef, and the playing of Amazing Grace on bagpipes by Palm Coast Firefighter/Paramedic Patrick Juliano.

U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz also offered remarks, speaking by video from the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, D.C. “Just know that day in and day out, every day that I wake up, I

used to what the new normal is going to be, and doing our best to make sure that our safety and the safety of our clients and our community come first.”

After locals spent months without haircuts, there was a rush on the reopening salons — The Glam Studio, Costa said, had a deluge of calls from new clients as well as existing ones who were more than ready to fix their quarantine hair.

At the same time, social distancing requirements have meant limiting the number of people in salons at one time — The Glam Studio has arranged staff scheduling so that half of the staff works at a given time — and taking extra time for cleaning and sanitization.

Capes are used for one client, then washed. “We do lots of loads of laundry throughout the day,” Costa said. And everyone, customer or staff member, is required to mask up.

“We like to see a nice clean salon, and we have children and we have families so we want to make sure that we’re safe,” Costa said. “I think our clients realize that, and that’s why they have been super patient.”

One difficulty, she said, has been getting sanitation supplies and protective equipment, especially hand sanitizer.

At the Atmosphere Reinvented salon in Palm Coast, owner and stylist Rebecca Howell order items five weeks ago that still haven’t arrived, and had to change suppliers to get needed equipment.

Like Costa, she’d closed earlier than the state had required, and was was excited to be back to work. “We had missed seeing our customers, and missed being in the groove of things,” she said.

But she was also, she added, “nervous for the new normal.”

Social distancing has cut the

salon’s capacity by half, making it harder to make a profit. Stations were moved so that they’d all be at least 6 feet apart.

“We have to work at a slower pace to accommodate social distancing, and between each customer, it takes a lot longer to disinfect,” she said. “We’e happy to do it, because we want to keep everybody safe.”

She expected those changes to last for quite a while.

The pandemic has also changed the atmosphere — with masks required, there’s less opportunity for banter, and some people wait in their cars rather than in the waiting room.

Meanwhile, stylists are working 10-hour days six days a week to keep up with demand.

“But it’s been fun, too,” she said. “There’s been a sense of camaraderie with all our customers coming back.”

The membership of the Flagler Chamber voted 38-8 on May 26 to dissolve the chamber, according to Mark Langello, the chamber’s volunteer chairman.

“It was the right move, and that’s why we voted that way,” he said.

The chamber’s board of directors had already voted on April 30 in favor of recommending dissolution, responding to COVID19-related losses in revenue from advertising and events.

Voting for dissolution was a better option than dragging the process out, which would have been a larger drain on member businesses that have themselves been impacted by COVID-19, Langello said.

Still, he said, “I’m personally very saddened. I was the thousandth member — I have the plaque and everything — I spent a lot of money on my dues, and I gave a lot of my time and a lot of energy and used to donate my services.”

He’d also known some of the founding members of the chamber, which was created in 1962.

Langello said he expects a new chamber will form at some point in the future.

He thanked the Flagler Chamber’s members, sponsors and friends.

“The fruits of everyone’s labor show in our community,” Langello said. “The chamber has helped make the community what it is — and it’s not a waste, because we have a very vibrant community today in part because of the chamber.”

Sheriff’s Office investigates shooting A woman was shot and injured while standing in her driveway on Palm Coast’s Rockefeller Drive in the early morning hours of May 26, and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

The woman’s injury appeared to be non-life-threatening, according to a news release from the FCSO. “The investigation into how this person was shot is active at this time,” Sheriff Rick Staly said, according to the news release. “If anyone saw or heard anything, we would ask that they call us. This appears to be an isolated incident, and while we have not made an arrest yet, there is no immediate concern to the community as a whole.”

The shooter has not yet been identified, according to the news release.

City youth activities remain closed

Palm Coast hires new HR director

City playgrounds and aquatic facilities have not yet reopened.

Palm Coast has hired Renina Fuller as its new human resources director.

Fuller joined the city staff on May 18 , according to a city of Palm Coast news release.

“We are coming together as a new team, and we will be working together to make a difference to our employees and the community we serve,” Fuller said, according to the news release.

Fuller has more than 20 years of experience in administration and handling budgets, payroll and benefits, as well as recruiting, training and employee relations, according to the news release.

She was most recently director of human resources for the city of New Smyrna Beach. Before that, she served as the director of human resources for the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, where she worked for seven years, according to the news release.

She has also worked in human resources and management positions for law firms and other businesses.

The state of Florida is lifting all COVID-19-related restrictions on youth activities such as summer camps and sports. But, for now, Palm Coast is keeping city youth and sporting activities closed, along with some recreational facilities such as the Palm Coast Aquatics Center and city playgrounds.

The city is looking to national organizations for guidance on when and how to reopen them. Staffing such facilities is also an issue, City Manager Matt Morton said

during a May 20 Virtual Town Hall.

“We really have a responsibility at this moment to be resource-allocation focused,” Morton said.

Hygiene and sanitation is also a concern, Fire Chief Jerry Forte said.

Gov. Ron DeSantis had announced the change during a press conference in Jacksonville May 22, stating that it would take effect immediately.

“We believe that it makes sense based on the data and

the observed experience,” DeSantis said. “We are not going to be instituting a lot of rules, or really any rules.”

The Florida Department of Health will release a set of best practices, he said.

“We trust parents to be able to make decisions in conjunction with physicians and community leaders and coaches to be able to do these activities in a way that are safe,” he said. In Florida, no one under 25 has died from COVID-19, he said.

“I believe the extra presence of deputies on the roadways, and waterways along with a lot of rain on Monday, helped us have a safe weekend in Flagler County.”

Palm Coast Data is planning to lay off 100-125 of its 400 employees and is exploring options to relocate from Commerce Boulevard.

PCD President John Meneough said Friday, May 22, that he is committed to keeping the company in the city.

“I really appreciate the fact that their commitment was to stay in Palm Coast,” said Mayor Milissa Holland.

Among the locations being discussed is City Marketplace, which is where, until 2015, the city of Palm Coast rented office space to serve as City Hall. If City Marketplace is ultimately chosen, it would be the second time in a row that PCD had backfilled a temporary location of City Hall; the city

was also headquartered at 2 Commerce Blvd. until that space was vacated to make room for PCD. However, City Marketplace is not a done deal. Meneough told the Palm Coast Observer, “Nothing is finalized yet. We’ve explored other things, kicked other tires.

There are other options.” A decision will be made “in a short time,” he said.

The remaining employees, who fulfill magazine subscriptions, will keep the company local, said Meneough, who has been president since 2019, after former President Rory Burke retired. It is Meneough’s second tour with the company; he has been working with nonprofits and other businesses since he retired in 2007, when Amrep Corp. bought PCD. The number of layoffs is “fluid,” Meneough said, as the company continues to adjust its services to the print subscription industry. “I’ve been in the business 40 years, and it’s changed drastically,” he said.

Susan Moore was among more than 25,000 Floridians whose COVID-19 test results weren’t returned or were deemed unreliable due to problems in a Texasbased lab. She was one of 1,017 residents of Flagler County who were impacted.

After she got tested for COVID-19 on April 29, she was told she would get a phone call if she was positive. She didn’t get a phone call, and she also didn’t see any results posted on the appointed website. No phone call meant, she assumed, that she didn’t have COVID-19. But in her case, that made her fear the worst because she is a cancer survivor. If she didn’t have COVID-19, were the symptoms a sign that her cancer was returning?

“This was an ongoing thing for weeks, because you don’t get that out of your head,” said Moore, who is also a senior account manager for the Palm Coast Observer.

She also couldn’t confirm her suspicions about cancer, because, in case she did have COVID-19, the doctor’s office didn’t want her to come in for other tests.

“It was very stressful and emotional,” she said.

that the faulty tests were administered from April 28 to May 8.

During that time, he said, “results were not coming through either electronically to the Department of Health in Tallahassee or to patients themselves. That generated a lot of phone calls by patients and us wondering, ‘Where are the test results?’”

The tests were administered by AdventHealth, which had shipped the samples to a third-party Texas lab for evaluation, Snyder said.

AdventHealth prepared letters of apology and offered complementary tests to people affected who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

“Teams across our organization are working around-the-clock to remedy the situation,” AdventHealth Central Florida Division President and CEO Daryl Tol said in the news release.

Moore has received four phone calls so far from AdventHealth, none of which has successfully set her up with her new COVID-19 test, she said. But at this point, she doesn’t see the reason to be tested again. And she believes AdventHealth should have let people know sooner that it did.

“It was unfair to everyone who got that test, and also to everyone walking around town,” she said.

“It was a long, long few weeks, and very hard to get through.”

‘STRIKE TEAM’ TESTS AT ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES A “strike team” from the Florida Department of Health has been testing nursing home staff and residents in Flagler County for COVID-19.

As of May 22, Florida Department of Health-Flagler Administrator Bob Snyder said, the teams had tested 995 people at Sabal Palms, the Windsor of Palm Coast, Tuscan Gardens, Brookdale, Flagler Health and Rehabilitation Center, and the Market Street Memory Care Residence. Grand Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center and Princeton Village of Palm Coast were next on the list.

A long month ahead 1-year-old Tye’Sean to get bone marrow transplant.

At 1 year old, Tye’Sean Giddens isn’t aware that he has WiskottAldrich Syndrome, a blood disease that affects just a few boys out of every 1 million born. He is, however, aware of trucks.

Every week as his mother drives him from their Flagler County home to a hospital in Orlando for platelet transfusions, Tye’Sean sits in his car seat, points out the window at semis and says, “Big truck!”

“I’ll try to get them to honk the horn, and it excites him even more,” said his mother, Leandra Tarpley. She has accompanied him on these trips to Orlando every week, from November 2019 to March 2020. He has eczema on his legs and face, essentially no immune system, and he will undergo chemotherapy next month, in Gainesville. That should make the next step possible: a bone marrow transplant.

“He will hopefully continue with his personality,” Tarpley said, “but with the chemo, it’s going to drain him, and he’ll have to go through speech therapy and physical therapy.”

He’ll be in the hospital for 28 days to see if the bone marrow transplant is successful. If it’s not, the doctors will start over with another round of chemo, Tarpley said.

father, Sean Giddens Jr. Both Tarpley and Giddens have lost their jobs either because of helping Tye’Sean or because of the pandemic, and now they’re faced with more financial hardship: Tarpley will need to live in Gainesville, near UF Health Shands Hospital, to be with Tye’Sean at least for the month of June. After that, Tye’Sean will need lots of attention, and Tarpley said she was told to expect not to work for up to a year.

Tye’Sean has been hospitalized for abscesses five times since November, in addition to the weekly trips for platelet transfusions, Tarpley said. She knew something had to change; Tye’Sean can’t get weekly transfusion for the rest of his life.

The family members were tested to see if their bone marrow could be a match.

Giddens remembers when Tarpley got the message from the doctor’s office. “She was so happy,” Giddens recalled. “She was yelling, ‘You’re a match!’ I said, ‘When are we going to get started?’”

FATHERHOOD

Becoming a father to Tye’Sean has helped Giddens make a big

change in his life, he said. Giddens has been arrested multiple times in the past, including once for his role in a home invasion in 2013, when he was 19, for which he served three years in prison. He violated probation on that charge as recently as 2019.

Tarpley, who is 25 years old now, said that after they got together a few years ago and she became pregnant, “Everything changed with him, period,” she said. “He got a job, and he never got a job before. He’s tried to provide for us, got us the house we’re in now.

It was a big change. His grandma tells him all the time that she’s proud of him. She thinks that if Tye wasn’t here, he would still be doing what he was doing.”

Giddens agrees. “I’ve changed a lot,” he said. “Before, I had nothing to look forward to. Now, I have a son, a house. I’m focused. He’s got me on the right track. … This right here — there’s no turning back for me.”

Tarpley said she’s filed for unemployment, she already has WIC and SNAP benefits, and she’s been doing research to figure out how she can live in a hotel or an apartment, in Gainesville. On top of that, there are bills at home that are difficult to pay under any circumstances, and the pandemic has made it even harder to keep up.

Don Green, art instructor, veteran to run for mayor of Palm Coast

Larry Jones, a retired Flagler County Sheriff’s Office sergeant, is running for sheriff as a Democrat.

As of May 26, Jones was the only challenger against Republican incumbent Sheriff Rick Staly. Jones also ran for the position of sheriff in 2016.

“Our community must be led by an experienced law enforcement officer from our community and Flagler Sheriff’s Office that seeks to avoids divisiveness and is dedicated to serve the best interest of our Flagler County community residents,” Jones said in a news release.

Jones, who was raised in the Bunnell and is a graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School and the Daytona Beach Community College Law Enforcement Academy, joined the FCSO in 1984 and worked in corrections, road patrol and the Drug Task Force, among other assignments.

He served as a school resource officer, supervised road patrol platoons as a sergeant, and was second in command of the FCSO’s Palm Coast substation. Jones retired from the FCSO in 2014.

His priorities include youth programs, community policing, agency morale, high visibility patrols to deter crime, strategic law enforcement initiatives to target drug activity and major crimes, diversity in recruitment and promotions, daily advanced agency training and executive staff accountability.

John Brady files to run for mayor Palm Coast resident John Brady has filed to run for the position of mayor of Palm Coast.

Brady spent 33 years as a Pennsylvania state employee directing benefits delivery systems and managing a child abuse hotline, and 40 years as a part-time crisis counselor and mobile crisis director for Lehigh County Pennsylvania before retiring to Palm Coast, according to a news release from his campaign.

He has since served on the board of Focus Flagler and completed three citizens academies — Palm Coast, Flagler County and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

“The major reason for my choosing to run at this time is the Palm Coast City Council’s possible consideration of high-density housing in current residential areas,” Brady said in a news release. “... It is my desire that Palm Coast retain the charm that attracted most of us to Palm Coast.”

His priorities: government responsiveness to citizens; preserving Palm Coast’s charm; promoting cultural and art events including fall and spring art shows and ethnic weekend events Town Center; reducing the city’s debt; having any items for council approval indicate the cost on the meeting agenda; and promoting a caring community.

“I want to be mayor to make Palm Coast charming, fiscally responsible and caring,” Brady said in a news release.

Donald Greene, a Navy and Army veteran and defense contractor who became a certified Bob Ross painting instructor after his retirement, has filed to run for mayor of Palm Coast.

“I find it disheartening that so much of our workforce must struggle ... to make ends meet with few employment options above entry level positions,” Green said in a press release. “I believe that allowing higher level technical businesses into our community, with better pay and benefits, will greatly enhance the welfare of so many of our friends and neighbors.”

Jobs with higher pay — such as those in biomedical research, defense contracting, and the aerospace industry — will also help make housing more affordable and allow parents to spend more time with their children, he continued.

Other priorities, he said, include swale management and street/road issues; eliminating wasteful projects and reducing third party vendors and contractors; and preventing overdevelopment.

“I don’t agree with the expansion of housing development at the currently proposed levels,” he said. “... Palm Coast has one of the most affordable housing markets on the Florida Atlantic coast. Personal income is the issue, not the cost of housing.”

Greene retired as a sergeant first class in 2000, then became a defense contractorbefore retiring in 2016.

“I am a registered Republican who will be a full-time commissioner,” Calderwood said in a news release. “I will hold regular office hours and will be available to speak to the public whenever they reach out. ... I will fully participate in countywide committees, and I will travel to Volusia County to attend committees that say they serve Flagler County residents.”

Calderwood grew up in Palm Coast. She was a dispatcher for the Flagler Beach Police Department, a volunteer firefighter with the Flagler Beach Fire Department, then a reserve police officer for the Daytona Beach Police Department and later a deputy and school resource officer for the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

She has also served as an adjunct professor and became an administrator with the Department of Children and Families and then a Program Administrator with the Flagler County Health Department.

She has also taken on the case management of homeless people.

Calderwood has graduated from three citizen’s academies, including Flagler County’s, and is a graduate of the chamber’s Leadership Academy, according to the news release.

“I consider myself a servant leader,” Calderwood said.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a scam that is circulating online that aims to take advantage of those in need of income during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On May 15, a woman answered an advertisement on Nextdoor.com, posted by a “Gilbert Neil.” The ad was offering a work-from-home job with great pay “during a world pandemic.”

Neil gave her the email address of Gilbertneil65@hotmail.com and a phone number of 401777-7434 to contact him.

Neil told her to purchase $6,000 worth of Amazon.com gift cards, reveal the gift card numbers and email them to him. She did so.

Sheriff Rick Staly warns residents to protect themselves and not give out personal information or agree to pay for employment.

Two fires set near area businesses Daniel DaCosta, 26, was arrested May 26, on charges of arson at two locations: the closed Citgo gas station at 4920 Belle Terre Parkway and a dumpster behind Pizza Hut and Kawa Sushi at 1475 Palm Coast Parkway.

DaCosta initially denied all involvement but then admitted to starting both fires. The lighters used to light the fires were still in his pockets.

Recent Matanzas High School graduate Katherine O’Mahoney has a 5.2 GPA. She volunteered 350 hours. She scored 1330 on the SAT. But even with that resume, she didn’t expect $20,000 in scholarships, on May 21, when the Flagler County Education Foundation organized the deliveries in lieu of its yearly assembly.

O’Mahoney received eight scholarships, which will enable her to go to Florida State University for her first two years without taking out any loans.

“I’m so grateful,” she said in a May 26 phone call with the Palm Coast Observer. “They’ll help me immensely.”

One way O’Mahoney volunteered was helping to distribute food in Pierson with the Rotary’s Interact Club at Matanzas High School. She stood with her fellow club members from 9 a.m. to 2

p.m. one Saturday each month, loading trunks in a line that stretched about 400 cars long.

“We were helping as many families as we could, and you could see their gratitude,” she said, adding that working alongside friends made it fun.

“If I can help people in any way, I’m going to do so regardless of the hours I earn, or the scholarship,” she said.

NEW TRADITION?

The Ed Foundation typically doesn’t deliver the scholarships; instead, there’s an assembly, and the organizations gather to watch students walk across the stage.

But Ed Foundation Executive Director Joe Rizzo said that could change in the future, based on the experience of the pandemicinspired alteration this year.

“I can’t tell you how many emails I’ve had about how [the donors] would love for us to change the process,” Rizzo said.

over the scholarships personally, they could see the emotion in the parents’ eyes and in the students’ eyes. Connections were made, he said.

“I didn’t anticipate it being that impactful,” Rizzo said.

There were close to 200 people who gathered to participate in the delivery, which was also inspiring, he said. “It made you proud to live in a community where that many people care about graduating seniors.”

There are a few examples when most people would have felt justified to take a day off. For example, one of her grandfathers died, and she stayed home and attended school that day instead of attending the funeral.

“She’s very disciplined,” Harris said. “When she has her schedule set, she doesn’t deviate from it. She does what she says she’s going to do.” Harris believes Cousins is uncomfortable around funerals, and she didn’t blame her for choosing school instead.

Another close call was an ankle injury that put Cousins on crutches for two weeks in high school. She still got up and took the bus every day, sometimes having friends helping to carry her books or helping her on the stairs.

“It was really hard to move around, but I had this goal of perfect attendance,” she said, adding that she didn’t want to be a burden on her parents by asking for a ride to school.

There were days when she learned of threats at FPC. “I wanted to run with my friends off campus,” she recalled, “but I would call my mom first, and she would calm me down, and I would think, ‘I’m good, I can do this.’”

There were also days when it seemed that most other students skipped school.

“During practice SAT, when I didn’t have to be there, and my friends would be at the beach, I was like, ‘Dang, I wish I could have stayed home,’” she recalled.

Instead, she visited her favorite teachers on campus, which she felt was time well spent.

Cousins, who also took classes at Daytona State College, said she was partly inspired to attend school every day because of what can happen if you don’t. She saw friends going to in-school suspension, and she knew they had additional makeup work to do as a result.

Also, Harris’ job, at the Department of Juvenile Justice, gives Harris experience to see what can happen with other teens who typically aren’t attending.

In her experience as a dancer, Cousins has seen the importance of being present for every bit of instruction. When she was on crutches, she still went to dance practice and watched so that she wouldn’t fall behind. She knew her teammates were counting on her.

That’s just part of who she is.

“She understands that knowledge is power,” Harris said, “and even on her bad days, she still gets up and goes.”

The world lost a bit of light. Joseph Pascuzzi also known as “Red Dog” left us to join the angels in heaven on Saturday May 9, 2020. He was a loving son, uncle, cousin, and friend to many. We all know the feeling.

Your hair is styled, and you have on your perfect amount of makeup. You slip on your favorite outfit and jewelry. You’re ready to take on the world! That feeling is called confidence.

Confidence can be described as “a feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities.” I’ll tell you what, as a new mom with a busy career, I was not feeling that way. My self care had fallen to the back burner while I was trying to balance my responsibilities as wife, mom and real estate agent. With small exceptions, I was rocking the messy bun and yoga pants whenever I didn’t have appointments. I knew something had to change.

Right before the virus hit Palm Coast, I reached out to my friend Diana Costa, owner of The Glam Squad. I explained what was going on and told her I needed a pick me up. She had previously styled my hair and did my makeup on our wedding day, one of the most confident days of my

life! I knew she would be able to help me out.

We scheduled an appointment, and, in two short hours, I went from a messy, exhausted mama to a confident, excitedabout-the-day boss babe. The atmosphere was upbeat and positive, as it is in many of our local salons, which just added to me leaving feeling great!

I am grateful for local mamarun businesses where we can go to get those pick-me-ups.

Confidence can come from a lot of different places. It doesn’t just come from the outside, it comes from within.

It can sometimes be amplified by a simple trip to the nail or hair salon or even a call to your best girlfriend. Lately, I have enjoyed exercising with friends, taking extra time to smile and laugh with Elijah, and go on dates with Brady. There’s no better feeling than when my boys look at me with love in their eyes!

BUSINESS OBSERVER 200 LITERS OF HAND TEAM MOJI: TWO SANITIZER GIVEN TO COMPANIES BEGIN FIRST RESPONDERS Moji Babazadeh, a resident of OrFlagler County Fire Rescue on Wednesday, May 20, received more than 200 liters of hand sanitizer thanks to Winn-Dixie, the Winn-Dixie Gives Foundation, and St. Augustine Distillery.

“We are so appreciative of this donation,” said Fire Chief Don Petito. “Winn-Dixie and St. Augustine Distillery gifted us with 17 cases, each containing a dozen bottles. We will distribute the sanitizer to our fire stations, all local responders and to our testing sites to be used by first responders.”

Flagler County Fire Rescue was one of four agencies to benefit from the presentation of the hand sanitizer, which was made locally

by St. Augustine Distillery. In total, Winn-Dixie and the distillery donated 600 bottles of sanitizer to Flagler County Fire Rescue, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, St. Johns County Fire Rescue and St. Augustine Police Department.

Additionally, the Winn-Dixie Gives Foundation presented each department with a $100 gift card to help stock their kitchen pantries.

“A lot of generosity and a lot of effort went into this donation,” Petito said. “Fire Rescue thanks each and every person who played a part in providing for the safety of our responders.

Community support like this is priceless.”

FOOD BANKS TO BENEFIT FROM L&M FARMS

Under a new federal Coronavirus Farm Assistance program, L&M Farms Inc. — growing on 2,000 acres across Flagler, St. Johns, and Putnam counties — will provide 432,000 pounds of assorted produce weekly to local food banks from May 15 to June 30.

“The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced plans for the new ‚ÄòFarmers to Families Food Box’ program on April 17,” said Melanie Thomas, Flagler County Extension director, in a press release. “Just a week later, the USDA invited proposals from those able to supply commodity

boxes to nonprofit organizations.

We began pushing that information out to our agricultural community just as quickly as possible so that those interested could apply, and an award was made by May 8.”

L&M Farms did apply and is now one of 40 awardees in the USDA Southeast Region, which encompasses eight states. L&M Farms will provide 12 truckloads per week, each consisting of 2,400 boxes.

The recipients of the 28,800 weekly boxes are three local agencies: Bread of Mighty in Gainesville, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida in Daytona, and Feeding Northeast Florida in Jacksonville. These locations distribute the boxes to smaller food banks, who in turn get them into the hands of local Florida families.

Chick-fil-A Palm Coast Operator Glen Efford spent his Saturday afternoon awarding Chick-fil-A Remarkable Futures Scholarships.

DUKE ENERGY DONATES TO BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS

Volusia/Flagler Counties received a grant from Duke Energy Foundation for almost $10,000.

This grant provides scholarships for 12 youth to attend the Boys & Girls Club (in person or virtually).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the eight units of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties have been engaging youth and their families in virtual programming and services.

“Duke Energy Florida is proud to be a part of the many programs that make our communities such a vibrant place to live and work,” Catherine Stempien, Duke Energy Florida state president, said in a press release.
