Hammock Beach Resort has been sold by Lubert-Adler to KDG Capital, and two industry-leading companies have been hired to take over operations of the resort and the golf club. Is a new hotel next?

“The owner has promised to build a hotel, and that’ll bring many jobs to our county, and also put us as a higher place in people’s minds as a destination,” said Greg Hansen, Flagler County commissioner. “I really think it’s going to be great for the county, great for tourism. ... The two golf courses are beautiful — they’re enough of an attraction — but throw a hotel in there, too. We want that whole north Hammock area to be developed.”

Hansen noted that there is also a chance of a hotel being built in Marineland. “I think it’s a start,” he said.

KDG’s owner “has visions of a multimillion-dollar renovation that could make the property worthy of a five-star flag,” according to a story in the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

The sale of the resort for $18 million was first reported by gotoby.com.

nine food and beverage establishments, according to a press release. These include Atlantic Grille, Delfinos and the Ocean Bar & Cafe. Aimbridge now manages four KDG properties.

Troon announced in a press release that it was hired to manage the golf course.

“The opportunity to manage a tremendous property like The Club at Hammock Beach is very exciting,” said Bruce Glasco, chief operating officer for Troon.

KDG Capital is a Tampa-based private equity fund focused on investing in “institutional grade hospitality assets ... in select high-growth markets,” according to a press release.

“We feel very confident about partnering with Aimbridge Hos-

pitality,” Greg Ogle, of KDG Capital, said in a press release.

Hammock Beach Resort features a Jack Nicklaus golf course, 330 accommodations, a 91,000-square-foot pool complex and 50,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting and event space.

Like Hansen, fellow County Commissioner Donald O’Brien also sees the sale as more likely to lead to the fulfillment of the promise to build a hotel at Hammock Beach Resort. The new ownership would also hopefully “make it a world-class resort and invest in cleaning up the facility and marketing it.”

“If all that happens, that’s all good news,” O’Brien said.

BRIEFS PREMIER FOOD TRUCKS TO BUILD IN BUNNELL

Premier Food Trucks, the number one food truck builder in the world, previously known as Project PFT, will be expanding operations in Flagler County. M & M Development will be building PFT’s new facility on Ninth Street in Bunnell. The construction will be completed by the end of summer 2020.

“We are thankful that the city of Bunnell and the Flagler County Department of Economic Opportunity took an interest in our expansion and were able to work together to provide options to make the growth process more affordable,” said PFT President Jordan Schild after the Dec. 18 vote by the Bunnell City Commission to adopt Resolution 2019-23, a performance-based business incentive program. “We feel with this move they have become a part of the Premier Food Truck family, and we are honored to bring our business to the city of Bunnell and Flagler County.”

“This is our first opportunity to implement the new incentive program that was developed by Dr. [Alvin] Jackson and passed by the Bunnell City Commission,” said Bunnell Mayor Catherine Robinson. “... We are excited that we have a new company coming in that is willing to participate in this program.”

Along with a new 15,000square-foot facility, PFT is searching for new employees to fulfill their expanding list of orders. The new jobs will pay an average of $50,000 a year.

SPARKS CONCRETE MOVING TO FLAGLER COUNTY

Sparks Concrete is the latest manufacturing company to expand operations into Bunnell, according to the Flagler County Department of Economic Opportunity and the city of Bunnell.

Located in Port Orange, Sparks Concrete has solidified the migration of their concrete batching plant by closing on land in the Steel Rail Industrial Park just prior to Christmas. Doreen Sparks, who owns the company with husband Billy Sparks, said, “We’re so happy to be expanding our company into Bunnell and being part of the growth that’s happening. It’s been a pleasure to work with both the city administration and the county economic development professionals.”

Motivated by the increased demand for their products and services in Flagler County in the last few years, the Sparks wanted to be closer to their customers.

“Flagler County is excited to see manufacturers like Sparks Concrete discovering Flagler County’s assets and choosing to expand their business here,” said Donald O’Brien, Flagler County Economic Opportunity Advisory Council chairman.

The expansion will include the construction of a 6,000-squarefoot building and 30 new jobs with an average annual salary of $31,000. The company will need to hire 10 new employees to start with the additional 20 positions created in the next three years.

City OKs initial development proposals for land near US 1, Belle Terre Parkway Also: Is Palm Coast getting too many dollar stores? City attorney to explore justification for restrictions.

Palm Coast may see new apartments on its west side, near U.S. 1: The Palm Coast City Council during its meeting Jan. 7 approved two proposals that could allow for new multifamily developments in the area of U.S. 1 and Belle Terre Parkway.

City staff had advised the approval of both proposals, which deal with overlapping parcels of land, after determining that they are in accord with the city’s comprehensive plan.

The first proposal concerned a 4,579-acre swathe of parcels which are together known as the Palm Coast Park Development of Regional Impact.

The council approved a proposal to allow for medium- and highdensity residential development on that land and to allow for residential development in areas that had previously been designated as office or commercial areas.

The land is already is zoned for multi-family and single-family residential development, but the amendment allows mediumdensity residential development on a tract identified as Tract 22; high-density residential development on Tracts 15, 17 and 20; and commercial development on Tract 17. Industrial uses would be limited to tracts along U.S. 1.

Local attorney Michael Chiumento represented developer Palm Coast Land LLC at the meeting, explaining to the council that the development of regional impact had first been approved in 2004, and development had then slowed during the recession.

Meanwhile, the developer had invested $32 million into the project and had already taken mitigation steps such as gopher tortoise relocation and completing site donations for a sports complex, school site and wastewater treatment facility.

Currently, he said, the land could be used for a shopping plaza that would be expected to generate more traffic than would be created by a residential development, he said.

City attorney Bill Reischmann said that the council had little discretion in its actions concerning the proposal: It was being asked, he said, simply to take the existing development guidelines and apply them to the Palm Coast Park Development of Regional Impact property.

“The discretion that this council has is a lot more limited than if they were trying to make the rules in the first place by amending the Land Development Code,” Reischmann said.

MATANZAS WEST PLAN GETS INITIAL GO-AHEAD

A proposal for a 285-unit apartment complex received the Palm Coast City Council’s initial approval during the Jan. 7 council meeting.

The vote in favor of the Matanzas West Multi-family Master Site Plan was 4-1, with Councilman Eddie Branquinho voting against.

He said after the meeting that he was not in favor of the high-density nature of the development.

The Matanzas West apartments would be built on a 188.5acre parcel of land within the Palm Coast Park Development of Regional Impact.

They would be constructed in two clusters along the west side of Belle Terre Parkway south of Matanzas Woods Parkway, taking up most of the 28.9 acres of land that is considered suitable for development.

The northern cluster would have six three-story buildings with 141 units and a clubhouse, and the southern one would have six three-story buildings with 144 units and a clubhouse. They would be separated by a wetland.

RESIDENTS SHOW UP TO OPPOSE GOLF COURSE PLAN

A handful of Palm Coast residents arrived at the Jan. 7 meeting to speak about plans to develop part of the Matanzas Woods Golf Course property.

But that topic was not on the evening’s agenda: City Attorney Bill Reischmann suggested that the residents had perhaps mistaken the Matanzas West proposal, which was on the agenda but unrelated to the golf property, for the golf course proposal.

He told residents who approached the podium in order to speak about the topic during the meeting’s public comment period that they were welcome to offer their thoughts, but that they may want to wait until the council schedules a hearing on the topic.

The subject will be treated as a quasi-judicial hearing with formal rules of procedure, and those rules allow for comments offered by the public during the scheduled hearing to be considered and entered into the record, while comments offered outside that setting would be considered exparte communications and not considered as part of the hearing.

The residents who’d attended the meeting to speak about the Matanzas Woods Golf Course property all decided to hold their comments until the formal hearing, which has not yet been scheduled.

Jason DeLorenzo, the city’s chief development officer, said that the developer has not yet formally discussed its plans with the city, and is still refining plans based on comments received at a neighborhood meeting. The developer will be speaking with city staff later this week.

TOO MANY DOLLAR STORES?

Does Palm Coast have too many dollar stores? And, if so, should it try to prevent more from coming into the community?

Mayor Milissa Holland asked City Attorney Bill Reischmann during the City Council’s Jan. 7 meeting if the city would be able to craft a policy to prevent dollar stores from coming to the city.

“We have a lot of Dollar Generals popping up in our city, and frankly I find it a little disconcerting,” Holland said to Reischmann during the meeting. “Is there a way for us to look at the possibility of addressing that as a community? I know other communities, like Flagler Beach, have restrictions and regulations on what can and can’t come into their community.”

“We certainly can look at it,” Reischmann said. He added that he knew of two communities that have restrictions on discount stores — one in Texas, the other in Illinois. In those cases, he said, the rationale for the restrictions was that a certain density of chain discount stores made it difficult for small, mom-and-pop supermarkets to succeed.

“We would need to make sure these restrictions were justified in the city of Palm Coast,” he said, adding that enacting them otherwise could violate constitutional protections for interstate commerce.

“If you don’t have a specific, provable type of local need, then that’s not going to overcome the negatives that you’re imposing,” he said.

Flagler prepares for annual survey of homeless Flagler’s low unemployment The county is teaming up with churches and other creates staffing shortages local groups for 24 hours of outreach, assessment.

The usual meeting of the Housing and Homeless Taskforce on the first Tuesday of every month (except July and August) was cancelled Jan. 7, because everyone normally involved was busy getting organized for Flagler County’s annual point-in-time count, the 24-hour period designated by the federal government for local agencies to count their nearby homeless populations.

Janet Nickels, program manager with the Flagler County Department of Social Services, said this is indispensable for bringing down grant money for the county and for allocating resources toward aiding the homeless population. This year, the time for the PIT count is noon Jan. 23 to noon Jan. 24.

“It’s so much more than our preparations in January,” Nickels said. “It’s building relationships 365 days out of the year.”

And the PIT count is more than a count — it’s a survey that helps the county understand what its homeless residents need financially or medically, and what resources they could be connected to that would assist them.

Having pre-existing relationships with many of Flagler’s homeless population, due to coordinating indigent health care or working with some of the local churches that provide services, makes the annual count easier and has

helped the department more accurately assess their needs since the county began doing PIT counts in the early 2000s.

As part of the outreach associated with this year’s count, the Human Services division of Social Services started a Thanksgiving tree project with several local churches, akin to an angel tree normally seen around Christmas; necessities were advertised on a tree and donated by those interested. Nickels said Human Services and the men’s club of St. Mark by the Sea Lutheran Church will join the Flagler branch of the Boys and Girls Club at Rymfire Elementary School to make “blessing bags” full of items collected from the Thanksgiving tree.

“We always invite a student group to help us,” Nickels said.

“We want to foster dialogue with them and teach about community service, foster empathy with one another. That bag is saying, ‘We care about you.’”

The bags will contain necessities and helpful items like woolen hats, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste and socks, as well as what Nickels calls a “211 card,” with list of places useful to homeless people — where you can get your laundry done or get a hot meal, for example.

on a template from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and on community-specific input. It is also providing training for PIT count volunteers Thursday and Friday, Jan. 16-17 at the Flagler County Government Services Building at 1769 E. Moody Blvd, Bunnell.

Nickels said this is the first year in which a coordinator for the SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery initiative, Deanna O’flaherty, will be working with them through Flagler Cares.

“A lot of our homeless have disabilities, mental, physical,” Nickels said.

Trying to help them apply for Social Security Disability Insurance is difficult without an address or consistent cell service, but she is optimistic that having a SOAR coordinator will help get people connected to needed assistance.

“It’s good for the health and wellbeing of the individual as well as the entire community,” she said.

With many local businesses suffering an employment gap, Flagler County’s Department of Economic Opportunity has teamed up with CareerSource Flagler Volusia to create a targeted radio and social media job-postings initiative to help fill it.

“There’s a workforce shortage nationally,” said Helga van Eckert, DEO executive director.

“Locally, it matches what’s going on nationally.”

Van Eckert cited Flagler County’s current employment rate of under 4% as a reason for these unfilled job openings, “despite a year-over-year workforce increase of more than 1,200 candidates.”

“The goal is to bring people in and up-skill them,” said van Eckert.

Marilyn Edwards, a CareerSource business service representative for Flagler, said three to five businesses reach out per week to be advertised over the radio in advertisements that run on Sundays and Mondays, each for positions paying $12 hourly or more.

“I’ve been getting between 9 and 10 job seekers a week,” Edwards said.

to advertise each week, and that around 29 job seekers have been connected to eight employers so far.

People interested in the positions often come into one of CareerSource’s career centers — the Palm Coast office is located at 20 Airport Road, Suite E — to use their computers for resumes, which are forwarded to companies seeking employees. Two companies, Edwards said, have hired more than three people already.

“They are getting interviews with these companies,” she said. All applicants have to do is remember the name of the desired position if they forgot the name of the company after hearing the commercial.

“We’re definitely having an issue with skilled and unskilled workforce,” said Chelsea Barney Herbert, president and operations manager of 4C’s Construction & Excavation. “Our industry is really starved for labor. We’ve had some recent applicants who’ve said they heard about the positions via the radio ads — about 10. We definitely appreciate it.”

Robin King, president of CareerSource, said that the awareness created by the campaign has been producing great results.

King said the program’s test period was originally slated for six months.

“But based on the response we’re getting,” she said, “I think we’ll definitely have to figure out how to continue running it.”

the property, allowing him to build a large number of homes behind properties that line the former golf course. It’s a plan that would reduce values of existing properties and reduce the quality of life of residents by over-building in an area never planned for the level of dwellings. I was also taken back by the implication by not only Mr. Ustilovsky but also his attorney, Michael Chiumento III, that the land “can and will be developed,” which is only true if the rezoning application were to be approved. Their spectacle of a performance, the plan itself, and their justifications showed little respect for our rights as property owners.

Myself and many other residents of Matanzas Woods are not in agreement with Mr. Ustilovsky’s plans for his property.

It is the city’s responsibility to uphold the promises it made to protect property owners of Matanzas Woods and reject any rezoning plan that includes building behind properties that currently line former fairways.

We are all investors too in our properties, in our neighborhood, and in Palm Coast.

We are entitled to the protections we trusted in when making our investments and we deserve to have our rights respected by the city as well as our neighbors whether they be residential or commercial owners.

We built our home in Matanzas Woods 15 years ago, and we chose to build on a property that backs up to the former Matanzas Golf Course property. We paid more for the open space behind our property that has been protected from being built on. It’s the privacy we get from that quality of our property and the unrestricted view which drove the value then and continues to today.

We have also lived through the closure of the course some 10 years ago and all of the uncertainty and angst of not only what will come of the former golf course property but the impact it will have on our investment. The one thing that has kept us somewhat at ease has been the city’s promise to protect the open space through the former golf course property’s current zoning of Multi-Planned Development and the “Greenbelt” designation on the Future Land Use Map which restricts building on the former fairways. It’s my opinion that the city foresaw times where these courses may cease to operate as golf courses and intended through the Land Development Code to protect the homeowners.

So it was confusing and appalling to me when the new owner Alexander Ustilovsky presented his plan to the neighborhood recently; he’s asking the city to rezone

City Manager Matt Morton responded this way: “Our practice is transparent and published. In the past, people preferred the deposit kept on ‘file’ because it created a credit when they moved, or covers their last bill with the city. The deposits earn interest which is always credited to the deposit holder. In essence, the utilities cannot profit and are owned by the residents of Palm Coast. If the prevailing sentiment of the public has changed, I don’t see any reason we wouldn’t change the credit refund process.”

Dear Editor: Recently I received a dozen or so phone calls and emails from voters complaining that the city of Palm Coast does not automatically refund the initial required security deposit for city provided utilities (water, sewage, garbage, recycling, etc.). Concerns were raised after a post on a local website criticized the city for keeping the security deposit until you actually contact the city directly to request your refund.

The Municipal Code presently allows the city to retain the security deposit for 23 months of good payment history, which I believe is reasonable. However, having to ask for the refund after 23 months of good payment history is not reasonable.

With today’s computer software, it should be very easy to automatically apply security deposit refunds to existing utility bills. As a candidate for Palm Coast City Council, I will work to change the obsolete policy now in place. Until then, I suggest everyone who has forgotten about their utility security deposit to contact the city of Palm Coast and request your refund. No doubt, like me, many may have long forgotten about this deposit.

Preserve Palm Harbor Golf Course Dear Editor: Number 9 of your top 10 stories from Palm Coast said “…the City Council is taking steps to preserve the Palm Harbor Golf Course longterm.” I know of no steps that the City Council has taken toward preserving Palm Harbor Golf Course. Instead, the city administration has been working with a developer to denigrate the golf course with condos, townhouses, or whatever the developer’s “flavorof-the day” proposal is.

There is no way that the city administration’s proposal to rezone the entire golf course to allow residential development can be seen as anything but negatively affecting not only the future of the golf course but also the property values of the established neighbor-

Tax dollars shouldn’t go to Medical Nexus Dear Editor: The County Commission and the City Council have expressed support for a Medical Nexus. “Support” meaning cash contribution when all is said and done, and that is your tax dollars.

For me there are only three basic questions: What is in it for the citizens of Flagler County and the city of Palm Coast? What is the cost for the citizens of Flagler County and the city of Palm Coast?

Does the benefit outweigh the cost for the citizens of Flagler County and the city of Palm Coast? These must be clearly answered.

There are several medical issues that people I talk to say exist here in Flagler/ Palm Coast. These issues are lack of “good” primary care physicians. I realize “good” is a relative term. One example to highlight the shortage: My sister-in-law called my primary physician for an initial appointment in August, and the first opening was in January, Second, try to get an appointment with just about

any specialist when you have a problem, and you will be lucky to get an appointment in two weeks but you will be put on the cancelation list.

Third, mental treatment is a hidden resource if it exists.

For years, we have been talking about the problem. Last time I looked on the Advent Physician finder, there was not a psychiatrist listed. I just checked and none within 20 miles but two listed in Orange City. Maybe it is time for AdventHealth to step up with the Flagler County Health Department and work to provide comprehensive mental health services for all members of our community without regard for the person’s insurance or lack thereof.

If Medical Nexus addresses these issues, then maybe the community would accept the cost to the taxpayers. Flagler County Commissioners and Palm Coast City Council, what’s in it for us and how much will it cost?

A painter hired to work on a rental property arrived at the vacant home at about 11 a.m. and found water gushing out of a guest bathroom toilet, flooding the house. Someone had ripped the fill valve out of the tank.

PAPER DECORATIONS 12 p.m. 6100 block of Mahogany Boulevard, Bunnell Vandalism. A deputy on patrol arrived at a park to find that someone had wrapped the stationary playground equipment in toilet paper and paper towels.

The miscreants had also tossed a traffic cone onto the roof of the bathroom.

GOLF CART JOYRIDE 2:48 p.m. 1000 block of Berrybush Street, Bunnell Grand theft. Two women saw a group of three boys, ages 8, 12 and 13, drive a golf cart off someone else’s property. The women followed the boys and confronted them, and the boys turned over the keys. The owner decided not to press charges.

BRIEFS FCSO detective returns to work after suspension Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Detective Richard Petkovsek will return to work after a sixweek suspension without pay after being arrested by the St. Augustine Police Department for disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest outside the White Lion Bar and Lounge on Nov. 23, 2019.

The State Attorney’s Office offered Detective Petkovsek a Deferred Prosecution Agreement. A DPA is often provided to qualifying individuals charged with misdemeanor offenses who have no prior arrests and upon successful completion of all requirements the charges are dismissed.

Petkovsek accepted the offer on Dec. 11.

The FCSO then conducted an internal investigation into the incident which determined he had violated agency standards and policies by his off-duty actions.

During this time, any future policy violations can result in his termination. “While the FCSO does not in any way condone Detective Petkovsek’s actions, up until this incident he has demonstrated nothing but professionalism and passion for community service including being the 2017 Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for Flagler County,� FCSO Chief of Staff Mark Strobridge said. “While he was not fired, significant discipline is being imposed. We believe that he will successfully complete his disciplinary probation agreement and live up to the standard of conduct expected of each FCSO employee.�

Fugitive arrested after taunting FCSO with Homer Simpson GIF After taunting the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, a Fugitive Friday Bingo target was arrested.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office featured Steven Victor Young on an episode of Fugitive Friday Bingo on Aug. 2, 2019. Young had active warrants from Flagler County for forgery charges, as well as for failing to appearing in court on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

On Aug. 20, Young responded online to the Fugitive Friday Bingo post by commenting with a GIF video of Homer Simpson standing in the kitchen and Waldo walking in the background. The GIF had a comment that reads “Waldo, Where are you?!� At the time of Young posting the comment, FCSO encouraged Young to turn himself in. When that did not happen, Sheriff Rick Staly and mem-

bers of the FCSO Fugitive Unit reached out to agencies in the Washington, D.C., area, as they believed that was where Young was residing. On Jan. 7, 2020, the USMS Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force and the USMS Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Young at his mother’s residence in Washington, D.C. He will be extradited back to Flagler County to face his charges.  “Taunting us on Facebook is only going to put you more in the spotlight than you already were,� Staly said. “We didn’t find Waldo, but we did find Steven Young, and soon he can be found at the Green Roof Inn where he will face the charges against him. Let this be a lesson to other fugitives that we will never give up looking for you, so turn yourself in. You are only delaying the inevitable.�  Young will be held without bond. The FCSO would like to thank the USMS Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force and the USMS Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force for their assistance in this case.

Suicide prevention plan would mandate new training The plan may undergo changes before the School Board votes on it.

A model suicide prevention policy proposed by the state would require schools to have every teacher undergo a two-hour training session on suicide prevention.

The Flagler County School Board considered the proposal in a workshop Jan. 7. The board has already made suicide prevention and mental health care a priority, adding mental health experts at every school and coordinating with Flagler Cares, an initiative that provide resources on mental health care and suicide prevention.

Board member Colleen Conklin, who’s been at the forefront of those efforts, had some concerns about the proposed policy, noting that the one-page proposal did not address, for example, how districts should handle the return of students after a Baker Act institutionalization.

“I hope we’re just not taking the language from the state and just rubber-stamping it and adopting it as a policy,” she said, “instead of looking at what a good, solid model policy on suicide prevention is.”

The policy requires “all school district staff members to be alert to a student who exhibits warning signs of self-harm or who threatens or attempts suicide,” and to report any warning signs from a student or staff member to a principal or designee, who would then immediately contact the student’s parents and inform them that the student is being referred for mental health services.

The proposed plan also tasks the district superintendent with

responding to a threat of suicide or an attempted suicide, and with creating guidelines to help school district staff members recognize warning signs of a student who may be considering suicide.

The two hours of training for teachers must be selected from a list of training materials approved by the Florida Department of Education.

The policy will be advertised for public comment for 30 days before returning to the School Board for a vote, likely in March, according to School Board Attorney Kristy Gavin.

PUBLIX, FLAGLER HEALTH+ EXPAND TELEHEALTH

Just a few months after announcing plans to open telehealth sites in St. Johns County, Publix Pharmacy and Flagler Health+ are expanding telehealth services to Flagler County. The locations

and opening dates are to be determined.

Both Publix and Flagler Health+ are working to make health care more convenient and affordable for the communities they serve. The telehealth sites leverage technology to provide on-demand care for common non-emergency medical conditions, such as fevers, flu, coughs and rashes, among others. The fee to use the telehealth site is $59 per visit, and appointments will not be needed.

The telehealth sites will have a private room with teleconferencing and medical diagnostic equipment, including stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, high-definition cameras and other tools necessary for common diagnoses. Patients speak directly with

NEW CHIEF FOR COURT, DETENTION SERVICES After an extensive nationwide search, Sheriff Rick Staly selected Daniel Engert as the new division chief of the Court and Detention Services Division.

Engert served over 29 years in multiple leadership positions with the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office’s Corrections Division.

“Daniel is a recognized expert in corrections and inmate rehabilitation at the state and national level, and I am excited to have him join our team,” Staly said. “He has the education, training, experience, and proven leadership skills to take our Court and Detention Services Division to the next level.”

“It’s an honor and privilege to join the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and to lead the dedicated men and women of the division,” Engert said. “I was impressed with the jail and court facilities and am looking forward to implementing Sheriff Staly’s vision for the Court and Detention Services Division. I’m very excited to get started serving at the FCSO.” Engert has a degree in criminal justice and holds numerous professional certifications.

He has served as a jail auditor with the New York State Sher-

iff’s Association to ensure New York jails are in compliance with accreditation standards and state laws.

He also served as a Federal PREA auditor at numerous facilities in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He was recently recognized and awarded the Gold Key Award from the Western New York Chemical Dependency Consortium for his efforts to address addiction and mental health issues in his jail and community.

The search for a new Division Chief of the Court and Detention Services Division was announced in September 2019 and was prompted by the retirement of Division Chief Steve Cole.

It commemorates the heroism of four chaplains on the SS Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943, when the ship was struck by German U-boat torpedoes in the North Atlantic and the chaplains gave their life jackets to others on the sinking ship when the supply ran out, saving shipmates but ensuring their own deaths in the process. They linked arms and prayed together as it sank.

All four were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart posthumously. They were Chaplain George L. Fox, a Methodist minister; Chaplain Alexander D. Goode, a Jewish Rabbi; Chaplain Clark V. Poling, of the Dutch Reformed Church; and Chaplain John P. Washington, a Catholic priest.

Flagler Palm Coast’s competitive cheerleading team placed first in all three of their cheer competitions so far this season, which were the Patriots Pride Championship, East Coast Championship and the Hawks Invitational Cheerleading Competition. fter 260 dual wins, eight district championships and 14 seasons, John White stepped down as the head coach of Matanzas’ boys wrestling team back on May 1, 2019.

He did it so he could focus solely on the Pirates’ girls team, which celebrated its inaugural season last year.

The Lady Pirates have seen rapid improvement since White’s decision.

“I wanted to give the girls their time,” White said. “Having to focus on both the boys and girls last year, I wasn’t able to give my full attention to the girls. I think we’ve seen a difference. They’re progressing much more rapidly this year.”

Despite having to split time between the two teams last season, the Pirates’ girls team was still extremely successful.

The Pirates placed fourth as a team at the state meet and had five state placers, three of whom are on the team this season: senior Angelina Bermudez, Morgan Morrison and Riley White.

Bermudez, a three-time state placer, took the silver medal. Now in her senior season, she’s out for gold.

“I don’t want to downgrade,” said Bermudez, who placed fifth as a freshman and fourth as a sophomore. “I want to keep improving. I want to keep this

Matanzas girls wrestling’s popularity has exploded in recent years. When Bermudez began her high school wrestling career nearly four years ago, there was just one other girl on the roster.

There’s nearly 20 now.

“It’s amazing seeing all these girls come out to try a new sport,” Bermudez said. “It’s fun. We’re a really good team with strong girls.”

However, girls wrestling is not yet a sport sanctioned by the Florida High School Athletic

Association. Another vote will go before the Athletic Directors Advisory Committee in May, and it’s expected to pass unanimously.

Then it will go before the Executive Board.

Girls wrestling will most likely be a sanctioned high school sport during the 2020-21 school year.

“There’s no reason it shouldn’t pass,” said White, who is a member of the Wrestling Coaches Advisory Board. “Girls wrestling is going to explode here.”

Q+ A WITH FPC LINEBACKER MALAKAI GRANT

M

alakai Grant is a 17-year-old junior who starred on defense at Flagler Palm Coast this past season.

The 5-foot-10, 191-pound linebacker led the Volusia/ Flagler area with 137 total tackles, 77 of which were solo stops. Due to his stellar play during the 2019 season, Grant was named the Defensive Player of the Year by the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

He recently spoke with the Palm Coast Observer about his growth as a player and what’s to come for next season. Here’s what he had to say.

A: It’s really good. Coach Roland, he knows his plays. He always gives us the right call to make or either he’ll let us call the plays and make them. But he’ll correct us whenever we’re wrong. Whenever we need him, he’s right there for us. He’s always with us.

Q: How do you think your game has evolved from last year to now?

A: Back then, I was a little hesitant. I wasn’t sure what I could do or how I could help the team at the time. I really wasn’t doing very well. But I overcame that fear. Watching film, going over the mistakes, it kind of came to me over time. I started working on my form and getting better at it so I can make plays.

Q: You’ve played on defense your entire high school career, at linebacker. What do you like about being a defender?

A: I like the hitting. I like the hitting, the talking. Defense gives me that mentality to go hard every play. I want to stop others from scoring.

Q: Is there anyone in particular on the team who you’ve looked up to over the years?

A: There’s a lot of them. From Seamus Hackett to Nelson Paul to Tyler Irigoyen to Ethan Brady.

Those guys were always helping me to be in the right place, how to line up, how to do my job right. I knew that if I did my job right, we were going to be able to get the work done together.

Q: Your head coach, Travis Roland, was previously a defensive coordinator at Mainland before coming to FPC and was a defensive back at the Division I level in college. What’s it like to be

Flagler Palm Coast’s girls basketball team kicked off the new year by taking down each of the teams it faced in the sixth-annual The Challenge tournament, hosted

by FPC. The Bulldogs defeated Colonial 46-35 on Friday, Jan. 3, and eclipsed Nease 48-45 on Saturday, Jan. 4, for their 10th and 11th wins of the season.

Despite losing a few games earlier in the season, the Bulldogs believe they’re in the right position heading into the second half of their schedule.

“We are where we want to be,” Bulldogs head coach Javier Bevacqua said. “We dropped a few games that we should have been more competitive in, but we’re happy with where we are right now moving forward.”

The Bulldogs have seen an improvement in junior guard Lily Dunaway, who is averaging about 9 points per game this season.

However, the team is unquestionably led by senior guard Brianna Ellis, the team’s leading scorer, and sophomore forward Lauren Stewart.

Stewart was zoned for FPC but played at Father Lopez her freshman year before transferring.

It’s taken some time to develop chemistry with her teammates, but there has been progression.

“I’m just getting used to my teammates,” she said. “We’re all starting to work together now.

We’re getting better every game.”

The Bulldogs have not peaked yet, but they’re building up to it.

“We can go as far as we want to go,” Ellis said. “We’re almost there. It’s all up to us.”

Flagler Beach hosts First Friday to open 2020

embers of the Flagler Beach community filled up Veterans Park on Friday, Jan. 3, in celebration of the new year for the First Friday event of 2020.

The city of Flagler Beach organizes the monthly event, which brings the community together for evenings of outdoor entertainment. Those who attended the event enjoyed an evening of music, dance moves, food and cool weather. Music was played by the band SoulFire.

Local restaurants and shops stayed busy, with half of the food vendors being sold out by 7 p.m.

‘They’re Playing Our Song’ Show at City Repertory Theatre blends tuneful music with barbed comedy

Two very different people find themselves drawn together by love and music in “They’re Playing Our Song” at Palm Coast’s City Repertory Theatre. The musical, with a book by Neil Simon, music

by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, draws from the real-life romantic histories of its creators in its depiction of a composer and lyricist who come together to write songs and end up with far more.

Angela Young plays Sonia Walsk, a lyricist based on Bayer Sager. Walsk has gone for too long without writing another hit and is struggling with an ex-boyfriend who won’t leave her apartment.

“She’s very straightforward and isn’t afraid to ask very direct questions,” Young said.

While she does not relate to Walsk’s unusual situation with her ex, Young said she does relate strongly to her character’s penchant for channeling her sadness and uncertainty into art.

“And for wearing funky secondhand clothes,” Young added.

Beau Wade plays Vernon Gersch, a composer based on Hamlisch. He is a man with multiple hits, awards and fame, but far less success when it comes to committed romance.

“He struggles with a lot of different neuroses,” Wade said.

“He’s really only comfortable when playing the piano.”

He believes most anyone, even people without runaway success in the music industry, can connect with this character, who wishes other people were as simple as notes on a page.

“A lot of people struggle with meeting new people, becoming interested and finding they have baggage,” Wade said.

These potent personalities do not find harmony on first meeting, however.

“It’s a classic battle,” said director John Sbordone, “a Neil Simon odd couple.”

Simon’s witty, barbed book puts as much power in the spoken word as in the sung, with so many jabs and jokes per minute that the songs are as much a breather in the midst of the comedy as much as they are opportunities for the songwriters to reflect on their emotional journeys.

“It’s really a play with music, rather than a traditional musical,” Sbordone said.

That music, however, does not disappoint.

“They’re earworms,” Young said of Hamlisch and Bayer Sager’s infectious pop score.

Several of the songs are sung by the characters to their own psyches, represented by another pair of actors, Alexander Loucks and Marisa Glidden.

“It’s fun to work off the rapport me and Angela already have,” Gliddens said. “Playing another side of her character as we work out, ‘What are we really trying to tell him?’”

Sbordone admits “They’re Playing Our Song” is not a show CRT would ordinarily tackle; it’s not “edgy,” with emotionally more grounded, if cleverer than average, characters and less angst than in something like “Spring Awakening” or “Next to Normal.”

“But nobody around here is doing it,” he said. “It provides a different challenge. And we’ve wound up with the best possible cast.”

Sbordone, Young and Wade all said they look forward to having the audience seated as close as possible to the action, so they can share in the music and comic asides in a more intimate setting.

“They’ll really become the fourth character,” Sbordone said.

A Palm Coast teenager recently organized a donation that delivered toys and $5,000 in gift cards to people in need before Christmas. She was inspired to do the project after watching a 2019 news broadcast about recovery efforts in Panama City. She was surprised to learn that there were people still living in tents more than a year after Hurricane Michael.

“Wanting to help people comes naturally,” said Carolyn Figueroa, who is a Flagler Palm Coast High School senior and is also enrolled at Daytona State College. “I live for the feeling of doing something bigger than me. These are the holidays. Everyone’s supposed to have a good time, and this group of people is left out.”

Feeling compelled to do something about it, she organized a toy drive, which was promoted in the Palm Coast Observer and at her church in Bunnell, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

said. Her idea led members of the congregations to collect gift cards in addition to the toys. The result was $5,000 in gift cards that were mailed to Panama City, helping about 30 families have a “modest Christmas” that they wouldn’t have had otherwise; the church leaders in Panama City were “very emotional and excited about it,” Larson said.

Joseph Parsons, a member of the church in Bunnell, volunteered to drive the 10 hours round trip to take the toys from Palm Coast to Panama City to help the people there — and to help Figueroa. “It was the last thing she needed to succeed,” he said. Parsons made the trip on Saturday, Dec. 21, in time for Christmas.

hess on the Porch is the monthly meeting for the enthusiasts and the curious. It takes place in the Humidor at European Village on the second Tuesday of every month starting at 6 p.m. The event is open for everyone.

“There is something sophisticated about chess, cigars, and craft beer,” said Phillip Gonzalez, who learned how to play chess after his mom taught him when he was 3 or 4 years old.

Darwin Barahona is visiting Palm Coast from Honduras. He found out about the event and decided to “take his chances” and order a chess game from Amazon to bring to the meeting.

He then went on to Westchester Business School & Norwalk State Community College where he received his degrees in Accounting & Computer Science. Anthony was then drafted into the Army where he served during the Vietnam Conflict. Upon receiving his honorable discharge Anthony then went to work for Electrolux Corp in Greenwich, CT & Norden Systems in Norwalk, CT. He was very active in his church community of Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church where he served as an usher, hospitality ministry, Teams of Our Lady and the coordinator of the Living Memorial Wall Collection. Anthony was also active with the Knights of Columbus where he served as a Grand Knight, Notre Dame Council 10514, 2017-2018, Faithful Navigator, Corpus Christi Assembly 2810, 2018-2019, he earned many Council & Assembly awards including an Assembly Award for the support of the Purple Heart To Be A Patriot.

He enjoyed helping the youth of Flagler County keeping the Knights of Columbus sponsored events active. His memberships also included the American Legion,
