Welcome to the 2019 Standing O edition We hope you enjoy the stories about your inspiring neighbors in this edition. You won’t find our normal coverage of news and community events this week, so allow me to explain. For the first several years of the Palm Coast Observer, we dedicated the first edition in January to recognizing the people or issues to watch in the upcoming year. Last year, we took a different approach and started the Standing O edition, and that tradition continues this year. The biggest difference is that we aren’t predicting what these people will do next year; we’re recognizing them for what they’ve already done. A second difference is how they’re selected. Rather than choosing the people ourselves as a staff, we asked community members to nominate people who had a generous spirit and/or were unsung heroes. The people we have written about in this edition were nominated by last year’s Standing O’s, and that’s my favorite part: passing the baton of generosity. Richard and Polly Conkling support students The Conklings embody the spirit of local philanthropy in their donations to students, teachers, extracurricular activities JOEY PELLEGRINO STAFF WRITER
Dr. Richard and Polly Conkling have been in Flagler County since 1977. “No grocery, no stop lights, not many roads,� Polly said. “It’s been such a big change since we first got here,� Richard said. And since they first got here, they have been involved with the community and its children. Longtime members of the Flagler/Palm Coast Kiwanis Club, the Conklings have been active members of Flagler’s school system — Polly as a teacher at Bunnell and Wadsworth elementary schools until 2003 (42 years of teaching). and Richard, known to students as “Dr. C,� as the county’s director of curriculum, then principal of Bunnell Elementary and finally assistant superintendent. “My first office was the isolation cell in the old jail,� Richard Conkling said. He resigned from that job to become the media specialist at Indian Trails Middle School at a time when the school
first got computers, retiring in 2000. “It was state-of-the-art,� he recalled. Even outside of their education jobs, the Conklings have remained involved with the Terrific Kids program, going to the assemblies every year, as well as Kiwanis community service groups for kids like the K-Club and Builders Club. “It gets them involved,� Richard Conkling said. “Gets them out of themselves and gives them responsibility for the community.� So much about school these days revolves around grades, the Conklings said, but Terrific Kids is about character and positive traits. “We’re interested in helping the young people succeed. So we involve ourselves with everything to do with schools,� Polly Conkling said. Every year until 2018, the Conklings sponsored Flagler County’s Teacher and Employee of the Year celebration, contributing several hundred dollars to the party for educational staffers. For older students in high school, they were involved in sponsoring scholarships, often via fundraisers for the Flagler County Education Foundation. Richard Conkling once secured $1.3 million for the foundation by convincing a Kiwanis member to give a sizable donation. In 2016, however, they personally gave out scholarships of a few hundred dollars funded

entirely by themselves to a pair of high schoolers, Alicia Smith and Dakota Kershaw. “The Conklings’ scholarship really helped me in my first year of college,� Smith said. “My family and I were really grateful for their kindness and generosity.� When Kaitlin McBride graduated high school and found herself in financial trouble, the Conklings purchased her a computer and had the Kiwanis Club chip in to buy her a car so she could get back and forth to college. Outside of their philanthropic efforts, Richard mentored the Observer’s own Shanna Fortier in photography through Take Stock in Children. “I think Flagler’s always been progressive, supportive of the

James Bellino gives aid to the homeless The Bunnell pastor provides free resources for those in need with the aid of the community and volunteers

James Bellino could still be making six figures. The pastor of Church on the Rock, at 2200 N. State St., Bunnell, spent 20 years in the corporate world and never thought he would have a full-time ministry. “It’s real easy to write a check,” Bellino said. “It’s different to have one-on-one interactions with people you’d never interact with in your life. I never thought I’d be a pastor.” Those people being, primarily, the homeless. Church on the Rock, with no paid staff and fewer than 100 congregants, has been offering air conditioning, cold drinks, hot showers and laundry machines to the homeless from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday and Saturday and a hot meal every Thursday evening. There are cots inside for people who have nowhere safe to go. “The purpose is to show value to a human being,” Bellino said. “Jesus always met the needs of those that were dispossessed. He touched the lepers. We have a responsibility to help them. Not just to give them things, but to help them where they are.” He found he had a heart for this kind of help when, after the housing market crash, he and his brother Tom bought and renovated around 40 housing units — 15 or so in Florida, between Palm Coast and Daytona Beach — and made them low-income rentals. “I was probably the worst landlord ever,” Bellino said. “I don’t know how many thousands of dollars I wrote off.” A CONDUIT FOR AID

with the people who show up. Unlike some churches, they do not require people to listen to preaching before they can eat. Those who want to stay for the Gospels after they have eaten can do so. “It’s not about shoving religion down people’s throats,” Bellino said. “That’s not what Jesus did.” Everyone who comes to Church on the Rock, he said, feels this spirit of giving and community solidarity. People from “six or eight” other churches — Catholics, Jehovah’s Witnesses, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — help serve at those Thursday dinners, and homeless friends of the church brought canned food and supplies of their own to the Thanksgiving dinner. “I get offerings of a crumpled dollar bill, of 27 cents,” Bellino said. “That means more than hundreds of dollars, because it’s all they have.” Bellino and his wife, Deborah, also a pastor at the church, let other groups use the church to host their own activities; most churches are vacant more often than they’re in use, Bellino said,

which is not a good investment. So Church on the Rock is also the site of the Angels for the Elderly adult daycare Monday through Friday and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings Saturday nights, among other things. “I want us to be a conduit to help people get the services they need,” Bellino said. NOT STOPPING
This is why, if Church on the Rock cannot provide someone what they need, they will funnel people to other places and organizations that can help. The Sheltering Tree, the coldweather shelter formerly based out of the First United Methodist Church in Bunnell, was one such place, before its closure. Around the same time, Church on the Rock was encountering issues of its own. When an encampment of homeless people existed behind the Flagler County Public Library’s Palm Coast branch, the Church on the Rock used a rented bus to bring some of them back and forth to the church to take advantage of the resources it offered.
While no members of the public have ever voiced complaints about what they do, Bellino said, this in particular led to some “heated debate” with city officials and county commissioners. “I told them, ‘You can threaten us; we’re not gonna stop,’” he said. His church is not a 501(c)(3) like The Sheltering Tree was, and is held to different standards. Besides aiding the homeless, Church on the Rock does outreach for those in prison as far away as Marion and Volusia counties and runs the Good News Club afterschool program for students at Bunnell Elementary School. PEOPLE PROVIDE
The Bellinos believe you have to give people a safe place before you can talk to them about their next steps. They have helped many find new jobs and places to live with recommendations and by giving them a place to sleep. While Bellino does not give out cash, he said it can be an even bigger help to give someone living out of their car a safe place to park overnight. The church is nondenominational and has no
deep pockets to reach into, but word of mouth has brought them enough food, supplies and funding to make it month by month. “People provide,” Bellino said. “God provides.” He admitted the task they have taken on can be difficult and is not for people looking simply to feel good about themselves. “Not everybody’s called to do this,” he said. “You need to do it out of the right heart.” Cleaning a bathroom or shower that has been used by a queue of people who have been living outside comes with an unforgettable smell. “If Jesus can clean the feet of all his Apostles in a row,” Bellino said, “I can clean a bathroom after it’s been fouled.” FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST
Years ago, he said, he would have walked by these people if he had seen them on the street. Bellini does not miss that time of his life, and has no need for the six figures he was making. “When my kids say, ‘Dad, we like you better now,’ then you know there’s a difference,” he said. At the core of Church on the Rock’s mission is the idea that God did not create anyone less valuable than any other, and that those who have less should be shown that they are not stuck, stupid or worthless. “We want to show them the love of Christ in a real concrete way,” Bellino said. “That’s how you start to change a community.”

It is not hard to see the volunteers — all dressed in white shirts and blue vests — in the Emergency Department, same-day surgery, at the entrances greeting and assisting in giving directions, at nurses’ stations, driving the courtesy golf cart, handling the gift shop and in the Judith C Macko Cancer Resource Center. Leading the effort is Marge Sisti, current president of the AdventHealth Palm Coast Volunteer Auxiliary. She leads a group
of about 175 dedicated community members who support the hospital’s efforts. These volunteers provide support to patients, staff and visitors each day in a multitude of areas. Marge and her husband and fellow volunteer, Thomas Sisti, have been married for 32 years and started their volunteer path in Palm Coast in 2011 when they had just moved in from New Jersey. Back then, Thomas Sisti found a doctor that helped him in a way that left them impressed and grateful, so they decided to become volunteers. At that time, they didn’t have many friends in Palm Coast; now, they have a lot. The Sistis keep busy keep, because keeping busy doesn’t give you time to worry, Marge Sisti said as the sun began to shine in
through the windows of the first floor of the hospital. The soon-to-be-past-president is a former cancer patient herself. “When I got really sick, this hospital saved me,” she said. “Everybody here saved me.” She volunteers three days a week at the hospital. “Knowing that I am helping other people has helped me too,” she said. “She works a lot because she loves to help, and that is who she is,” Thomas Sisti said. She has found purpose and joy devoting her time to help others and feel happy, he added. “You can always help,” Marge Sisti said. “People might feel sad and afraid, and it is good for your heart to help others feel better. A lot more people should volunteer. Come and join us and make everybody happy.”

mothers and kids. “One of the parts that hit me the most when I first found out about was hearing about babies that are born drug-addicted, or with mental or physical disabilities as a result of addiction and how it hinders the future of kids,” he said.

Four years ago and while on K9 duty, Cmdr. Jon Welker learned of the dozens of infants and children that are part of the daycare at WARM, which is a residential behavioral health care program in Bunnell, serving substance abuse victims who are pregnant women, postpartum or parenting young children with the assistance of Easter Seals. Welker and his wife have worked with the preschool to learn about each child and purchase gifts for the children each year. This selfless act of kindness has inspired fellow members of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and the K9 unit to volunteer and assist him in delivering gifts and treats to add to the Christmas and wellbeing of kids and staff members of the sanctuary. Twenty-four children in the daycare this year have received gifts. “There is a time in your life when you come to an opportunity when you can do something to help or give something to somebody, and I feel all of us are in this together, so I do it,” Welker said. “We are members of the community, and most of us live in the county. We

Bonnie Welter: New medical resources for the county Welter’s new programs with the Flagler Department of Health help those who once had to travel out-of-county JOEY PELLEGRINO STAFF WRITER
Bonnie Welter remembers when Flagler County’s total population was no more than 30,000 people. It was 1986, when she first became involved in the county’s public health, in the thick of America’s HIV/AIDS crisis. Things have improved much since then. Now the executive community health nursing director, Welter said the public health field overall has gotten better talking to people about sensitive subjects like sexually transmitted infections — she was behind the addition of a community STI surveillance program within the last few years — and vaccinations save more kids from chicken pox, pneumonia and influenza. “I have a big passion for children,” Welter said. “I want them to have the support they need to be productive adults.” Working with Flagler Schools to provide school-based influenza vaccines is just one of the ways in which Welter has raised the efficacy of local public health resources. In her time with the Department of Health, she has started many new programs and personally runs over a dozen of them. Most recent are 2019’s

diabetes prevention program — a year of lifestyle coaching for the one-third of people with prediabetes— and diabetes selfmanagement program. FINDING COMMUNITY NEEDS
Welter said she gets emails from clients in the prevention program, thanking her for providing the support needed to make lifestyle changes. She gets around as many emails from HIV patients thrilled with the HIV program she started at the DOH in 2015, thrilled they no longer have to drive to Volusia County for help. “The public needs to know that they’re not out there alone,” Welter said. “We’ve made amazing changes. Doctor’s offices are referring their patients to us.” This is why the triennial community assessment currently
being done for the county is so important; it will let the DOH know where their efforts need to be focused. Based on the results of the last assessment, Flagler’s most pressing public health concerns include mental health, adult and youth behavioral health and domestic violence. Welter said the opioid crisis is another threat they are trying to keep at bay and that it is adding to the frequency of hepatitis C in the community. As bad as Florida’s hepatitis A emergency has been in 2019, hepatitis C has been a recurring hazard among older citizens and is expensive to treat. “Every boomer should get screened for hep C,” Welter said. A SELF-SUFFICIENT FLAGLER
There was a time when Flagler had to go to other counties’ health
departments for resources. Welter made it her mission to see to it that Flagler County can provide for its own residents with her many programs, as with the HIV program or her bringing in an obstetrician for neonatal care so new mothers need not travel far. When starting a new one, they first perform a needs assessment to decide which area of public health is not being adequately served. Once the need is identified, the DOH looks for funding, whether in the form of small state health office grants or private funding. Then Welter looks for her staff. “I usually work the programs from the bottom up,” she said, until she can bring in a trusted employee — possibly one of the nurses she has mentored from RN up to BSN — from another part of the department to run them without her. All of her employees juggle multiple responsibilities in different areas of public health. “We do not become siloed,” Welter said. PASSION TO MAKE A CHANGE
“This place tries to find a way to either treat people or get them to the resources they need,” said Gretchen Smith, the Flagler County Health Department’s public information officer. “I don’t often hear ‘We can’t do it.’ They’re more focused on ‘Let’s make it happen.’” This quality is why Robert Snyder, the department’s chief health officer, called Welter “one of the

Everyone here wants to have a healthy community.” Her plans for 2020 include applying to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for recognition of Flagler’s new diabetes programs and establishing a colposcopy clinic in the county for those on Medicaid or without insurance. “When we’re able to get funding for our priorities and we’re able to affect them, that’s what keeps me going,” Welter said. “It’s the passion to make a change.”

Lynette Shott, the executive director of student and community engagement at Flagler Schools, has a passion for education that makes her an essential part of the progress of the county’s students. Her multifaceted job is divided into two significant parts: the students and the community. The student engagement side is about making sure students have everything they need to be successful in school. They work with homeless students and those who are experiencing physical or mental health needs — anything that might be a barrier to success. The community engagement side allows her to work with a large number of the community’s philanthropic organizations, service clubs and the business community through the classroomsto-careers program. “Being able to work with the business community and help build pathways for students that are tight connections to their future is part of my ‘why,’” Shott said. When asked why she does what she does, her answer was based on the personalities, needs, sets

Shott takes pride in the classroom-to-careers program, which aims at having students go straight from high school classrooms to job positions with no debt. For her, the challenge is helping everybody comfortably move away from what has always been done: the traditional paths and ways of educating.

For 20 years, Samantha Whitfield was a bomb builder in the United States Air Force. Now, she is bringing her knowledge of risk assessment to the Human Resources Department of Flagler County and encouraging employee fellowship with candy. “If there’s one thing that I’ve learned, it’s that you can always draw people in with candy, chocolate, food,” Whitfield said. “People just like food. So I thought the best way to get people in here was with a smile and some candy.” When Whitfield started working with the county two years ago, she set up a candy dish in the front of the human resources office — right next to a window. Each day
the number of visitors to the candy dish grew. “Now I know more faces,” Whitfield said. “Even if it’s just a 30-second conversation while they’re eating the candy, it’s my opportunity to get to know them real quick, know their name, know their role here. And let them know that I’m here for them and that HR really is an open door.” That was Whitfield’s goal: to let employees know that her department is there to help. “She genuinely cares about the employees and cares about their well being,” said Pamela Wu, the human resources director for the county. “It’s very important to her that we work collaboratively with our departments and she strives to bring employees into our office and makes sure our employees know we are there for them with something as simple as making sure the candy dish is full.” This holiday season, the candy dish was the inspiration for the department’s door decorating

county’s human services department, Whitfield manages the safety aspects for the county, including liability, workers compensation and insurance claims. She also assesses safe and unsafe practices at county facilities. “I am a big advocate for safety,” Whitfield said, noting her time in the Air Force. She joined shortly after graduating from Flagler Palm Coast High School in 1996 and retired two years ago as a master sergeant. “When you’re in the bay and they’re building bombs and missiles, you’re looking for unsafe practices,” Whitfield explained. “You’re looking for complacency.” “She’s very passionate about her career — military or civilian,” said Kris Collora, who has known Whitfield since they were 11 years old. “And she’s great at what she does. She’s enthusiastic and just empowering because it’s nice to have that kind of enthusiasm to boost morale.”

As a Florida native, Adam Mengel has deep family ties to the state. His mom’s family settled in the area in the beginning of the 1800s in an area known as Moccasin Branch — near Pellicer Creek and what is now known as Princess Place Preserve. “It’s been kind of neat to study that and see those areas of old Florida how the folks back on the family tree had seen it,” Mengel said. “A lot of those areas haven’t changed that much.” Mengel is passionate about family history and history in general. Being a student of history also helps Mengel while doing his job at the growth management director in the planning department at Flagler County. He sees how land was used in times past. “Some of it was land that was developed for indigo or cotton or salt,” he said. “And then the potatoes came later. It’s kind of neat to see how people have come and made a living and been able to work the land and make it their home.” In Mengel’s dual role as growth management and planning director for the county, many issues he deals with are contentious within the community. “I’d say more than anything right now, my job is helping the public work through our procecesses,” he said. “To some, it may not sound genuine from me. But I do enjoy the public input and the public discourse.” One thing that Mengel said makes public discourse so difficult right now is that he believes as a people, nationally “we’ve lost

Scott MacDonald is the guy behind the scenes at Palm Coast Parks and Recreation. He’s the guy who cleans park bathrooms and stocks them with toilet paper. He’s the guy who makes sure playground equipment is safe and not broken. And he’s the one who cleans up and reports vandalism. MacDonald’s long list of responsibilities also includes re-stringing basketball nets and tennis nets, picking up trash on trails, and clearing out insect nests. Anything that needs to be done to keep Palm Coast’s parks and trails safe and clean, MacDonald does it. “Scott is probably the most dedicated Palm Coast employee that we have,” said Dennis Redican, who has worked with MacDonald for 13 years. “He is so reliable. He barely takes vacation time or sick time. He does so much and doesn’t get credit for it because nobody knows exactly what he does.” MacDonald has been doing maintenance for Palm Coast Parks and Recreation for 13 years. He loves his job because every day is different. “I look forward to coming to work everyday day,” he said, adding that his love of his job stems

Since we’ve moved to Palm Coast, Scott loves Palm Coast and he wants to always make this a place that others can enjoy.” MacDonald not only frequents Palm Coast parks during his shift, but he also enjoys taking advantage of the walking trails throughout the city. The walk along the intracoastal from Waterfront Park to European Village is one of his favorites. Redican said that when MacDonald decides to retire, the city will take a big hit. “The guy does so much in eight hours a day,” Redican said. “It’s very commendable. It’s going to be very difficult to replace a guy like Scott MacDonald. His willingness to go above his job description is something we are never going to be able to replace.”

Quenteen Robinson leads by example at Matanzas SPORTS EDITOR
Wrestling has been Quenteen Robinson’s life since he was a toddler. Growing up in Johnstown, a small town in southwestern Pennysylvania’s Cambria County, Robinson was first introduced to the sport by his father when Robinson was 4 years old. He used to cry when he’d step out onto the mat for a match, Robinson recalled. But he quickly fell in love with the sport. His dad started a wrestling club. He practiced three to four times per day, went on extra runs and practiced various moves around the house. Wrestling is a one-on-one sport. So, Robinson says, what you put into it is what you get out of it. Hard work is a must. “I’m just trying to be the best that I can be,” he said. “I’m just trying to work hard and get better every day.” The Robinson family moved to Palm Coast the summer before his sophomore year. He enrolled at Matanzas High School and decided to participate in both football and wrestling. However, midway through the season, Robinson was injured during a junior varsity football game. Some of the cartilage in his knee had chipped off. His football season was done, and he missed most of the wrestling season. Still, Matanzas’ coaches saw no problem throwing him into the mix when Robinson returned to full strength. He returned late in the 2017-18 season and was a match away from qualifying for
the state tournament. “When you get in a match, you hope that it comes down to his weight,” said Matanzas head coach T.J. Gillan, who was an assistant at the time. “He’s a big part of what we’ve been doing.” Robinson decided to refocus on his goals before his junior year. He gave up football. He wanted to pursue only wrestling. “Wrestling is what I wanted to do,” he said. “It’s what I wanted to be in life.” Last year was one of Matanzas wrestling’s most successful seasons ever. The Pirates made history by becoming the first Flagler County wrestling team to qualify for the Florida High School Dual Wrestling State Championship, where they finished in a fourway tie for fifth. The Pirates beat crosstown rival Flagler Palm Coast, traditionally one of the top teams in the state, 51-24 on Jan. 23 for the Pirates’ first win over the Bulldogs in 10 years. And Robinson was one of three Pirates to qualify for the state tournament, where he finished in fifth. He learned valuable lessons from the experience. “I learned not to get too ahead of myself,” he said. “I can’t do moves that are going to put me in a position to lose a match.” Now a senior, Robinson is the No. 1-ranked grappler in the 170-pound weight class in Class 2A. He’s played an integral part in the resurgence of Matanzas wrestling, and he hopes to not stop there. “There’s a lot of work to be done,” he said.

FPC’s Preston Roberts sets the standard
For Flagler Palm Coast quarterback Preston Roberts, last season’s loss to Winter Park in the first round of the Class 8A FHSAA State Playoffs was an eye-opener. Roberts saw frequent action for the Bulldogs last season despite being a freshman. After a scoreless first half, Roberts replaced junior starter Donovan Montoyo at signal caller, and the Bulldogs managed to score their lone touchdown in the third quarter. The game was somewhat close for a few periods, but Winter Park took control, dominating in a 34-7 victory. The loss was tough on Roberts, but ultimately, it’s helped him grow as a football player. “It opened my eyes to 8A football in this state,” said Roberts, who grew up in Dalton, Georgia, and lived in Billings, Montana, before moving to Palm Coast before he started the eighth grade. “I realized what goals I had to

reach and what standard I had to play at to be successful.” Roberts expected to see significant playing time his sophomore season, but Montoyo, a team captain and a senior, was the unquestioned starter. That all changed when Montoyo went down with a knee injury in the second quarter of FPC’s game against Spruce Creek on Sept. 13. Roberts was thrusted in the limelight, helping the Bulldogs storm back to beat the Hawks 41-20. They didn’t know it at the time, but Montoyo was done for the season. Roberts, who is 16 years old, started the final eight games for the Bulldogs. Roberts has always been ready to start. He’s always prepared that way. But seeing his mentor and one of his best friends on the team get injured was tough. “To see a team leader like that go down, it opened my eyes. I had to fill his shoes,” he said. “Just to see a guy who puts all of his effort, all of his time in for the football team not be able to play is tough.” Roberts helped lead the Bulldogs to an 8-2 regular season record and FPC’s third-straight playoff berth. The Bulldogs faced Apopka in the first round and were neck-and-neck with the Blue Darters for much of the game. However, Apopka scored 21 points in the final 69 seconds of the third quarter to seize control for good, stunning FPC 42-25.

In Bunnell Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year April Adams’ 17 years as a teacher and 15 years teaching in Flagler County, she has received a “highly effective” rating on her final evaluations every year, and earned the state Department of Education’s “High Impact Teacher” designation for every year that
the DOE has released the list. Adams emphasizes writing skills in her classroom, integrating writing into other subjects. In the last year, 70% of her 47 students made gains on their English language arts FSA score. “One of my favorite songs has always been ‘Greatest Love of All,’ which opens with the lines, ‘I believe the children are our future; teach them well and let them lead the way,’” she wrote in her application statement for the Teacher of the Year award. “The students who enter my room do not do so just to receive an education in academics. One of my goals is to

Adams has also taught an Information and Communication Technologies Multimedia Essentials class to her students for the past two years, and her students passed at a rate of 81% last year and 91% the previous year.
“These 78 students will now be able to add this certification to their resume in the future when they apply for a job,” she wrote. She’s recently received two Flagler County Education Foundation grants: One, last year, helped teach students to use QuickTime, which they then used to interview community members to create a digital history of the county. This year, the grant has funded virtual field trips for students.

School could be tough for Matanzas High School 2019 Teacher of the Year Gloria Barton when she was a girl: Her family had moved to the U.S. from Russia, and she arrived knowing little English. But that experience, she wrote
in her Teacher of the Year statement, taught her about overcoming barriers — as did watching her own mother use education to transform herself from a nail technician with little schooling into a nurse practitioner. “I struggled with my own adversity as a student, but was able to overcome my challenges and obtain a rewarding position in education, although this was the same area that once held many barriers for me,” she wrote. “No matter what kind of circum-
stances a student comes from, we as educators have the opportunity to empower our students.” Barton teaches forensic science, and enjoys watching students learn about the field she’s passionate about. “Watching the engagement of these young adults as they analyze and evaluate the varying pieces of evidence of a case, and then as they put those pieces together to complete a vastly complex puzzle, is the strongest motivating factor in my career as an educator,” she wrote. She’s coordinated with the University of Central Florida to create mock crime scenes for students. Learning to carefully evaluate information also helps students in other areas of their lives.

to give supplemental lessons and bring in guest speakers. More than 50 of her students earned cybersecurity certification. This year, she is partnering with Marineland, the 4H Embryology program and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to participate in SeaPerch, an underwater robotics program, and will be adding a butterfly garden, an educational arcade and an “adopt a wetland” program.

Their creativity and innovative ideas flourished.” Her favorite accomplishment has been building a STEM program. “When I started teaching the program last year, there wasn’t any true direction,” she wrote. “There wasn’t a previous STEM program, there was a new administration and there was no budget. So, I wrote multiple grants to get funding to implement projects that encouraged students to collaborate and solve problems.” Last year, Coolican was awarded more than $10,000 in grants,

They need a trusted ally in their corner who will not let them be deterred by one lousy grade, but rather encouraged by progress. of them increased by an entire placement level,” she wrote. “Equally as important, 100% of them showed an increase in reading stamina, consistency in applying reading strategies and an increase in effort and perseverance towards the goal of achieving grade level expectations.” Frank integrates other content areas into her English language arts lessons. She mentors students and coordinates tutoring programs, helping students improve reading and math skills. For other teachers, Frank plans and leads workshops about research-based instructional practices, and presents professional development training. She has also participated in the Florida Department of Education’s Standard Setting committee.

As a special education teacher for 19 years, Indian Trails Middle School Teacher of the Year Suzanne Haibon helps prepare students academically, socially and emotionally, so that they can meet their academic potential and be better able to socialize with the broader community. Her students, she wrote in her Teacher of the Year statement, face many challenges, “but every day they arrive in class and try to excel and learn to the best of their abilities.” Haibon’s students run the ITMS Coffee Cafe, serving as baristas while raising money for instructional trips to local businesses, where they learn about cooking and planning a meal, shopping, and paying a cashier. They also run a dog biscuit and snack basket business, and this year are adding a new outreach project: the Best Buddies Greeting Card Company. In Haibon’s time leading the school’s Best Buddies Club, which helps create relationships between students with disabilities and students without disabilities, the membership has grown

Plenty of kids have trouble with math. So when a student tells Wadsworth Elementary School teacher Carrie Harris that she’s made the subject “easy,” she knows she’s doing something
right, and it inspires her to keep working hard to make a difference, she wrote in her Teacher of the Year statement. “I just want my students to learn to love math the way I have grown to love math,” she wrote. “... If you have ever seen a student’s eyes light up in understanding, then you know ... the feeling of inspiration in the teaching field.” In her science classes, she also reinforces reading.
Before the first day of school each year, Harris has already done her homework: She keeps a binder with data on her students, and puts the information into a spreadsheet. “Getting this visual picture of each student helps in my endeavor to build a relationship with each student and fulfill his or her needs outside of the content area,” she wrote. In addition to earning the highly-effective designation, Harris has been rated as a high-impact teacher for three years. She mentors students, and created a four-day-a-week tutoring program for students who are close to the “proficient” level 3

Most teachers’ students fall somewhere in the same general age group. But Flagler Technical Institute teacher Mariann Mahnke’s adult education pupils may be 16 or 60. Often, they’ve had a difficult path before they get to FTI.
“Some are here because the regular school system didn’t work for them,” she wrote in her Teacher of the Year statement. “They may have been missing too many days of school because of illness, or they moved too much. Others come because life was rough when they were younger and education wasn’t as much of a priority.” That brings special challenges, and special rewards. “I want my classroom environment to be a safe place to learn,” she wrote. “A place where they

Old Kings Elementary School English teacher Joy Sanfilippo isn’t content just staying in the classroom: Over her years with Flagler Schools — the district she graduated from herself — she’s been a reading coach to other teachers for the Josh Crews Writing Club, created quarterlies for middle school students and weeklies for students in grades 4 through 6, helped created a poetry slam event for primary and intermediate grades, worked with other teachers to create English language arts curriculum maps, and even helped add a medical lab for the school’s medical flagship program. By seventh grade, Rymfire Elementary School Teacher of the Year Michelle Seth knew what she wanted to be: a music teacher, just like the teachers who’d so inspired her. “It is my sincerest wish that my love of students and my passion for music is what inspires my students, as well,” she wrote in her Teacher of the Year statement. Seth has taught music at Rymfire Elementary School for nine years. Some teachers only have students for one year before they move on to other teachers.
